Art is alive and well in the Adirondacks

rt didn’t disappear during the coronavirus pandemic; on the contrary, there’s more art than ever. It just wasn’t on display as much as it had been before March 2020, when COVID19 shut down social gatherings such as concerts, plays and art exhibits. Throughout the past two years, painters continued to paint, photographers photographed, writers wrote, dancers danced, actors acted, movie makers made movies, sculptors sculpted, and musicians made music. Now, during the third year of the pandemic, it’s exciting to see that artists and their work are slowly coming back into the limelight. We’ll see more live music and theatrical performances. We’ll see paintings and photos on gallery walls. We’ll read new books and experience all kinds of new art. More and more, as the pandemic enters a new phase without public health guidelines such as mask mandates, we’ll be able to get together again and celebrate art in the Adirondacks. Experiencing art is obviously a social activity. This summer, you’ll get reacquainted with friends — sitting in lawn chairs watching a concert at Mid’s Park in Lake Placid, Flanders Park in Tupper Lake or Berkeley Green in Saranac Lake; sharing a glass of wine at an exhibit opening at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, Tupper Arts or Adirondack Artists Guild in Saranac Lake; and meandering around downtown Saranac Lake during the Third Thursday ArtWalks. This summer, art will be reborn in the Adirondacks, not just because of the art itself but because we’ll be able to share it again in public. There’s no doubt that art is alive and well in the Adirondack Park, and we’re looking forward to seeing you this year when our local artists show us all their new work. 14th Adirondack Plein Air festival

aranac Lake ArtWorks is hosting the 14th Adirondack Plein Air Festival Aug. 15-20 — a week of painting activities and events intended to challenge the participating artists as well as entertain the general public. Artists from all over the country apply for this event and the top 40, as scored by a selection team of three plein air painters, get invited to attend. The event will be coordinated by Jane Davis as event founder, Sandra Hildreth, retires. There is a “Meet the Artist” reception at the Hotel Saranac on Monday, Aug. 15, from 7-9 p.m. Come see if your favorite artist has returned or watch as some begin their nocturne paintings after the sun sets. Tuesday, Aug. 16, is the best day to watch the artists at work, as they will all be painting along the family friendly trails at the Paul Smiths College VIC. There are many scenic painting spots there as well as at the Black Pond trail area on Keese Mill Road. Wednesday, Aug. 17, the artists are free to paint anywhere, so they’ll be harder to find. Keep your eyes open for cars pulled off the side of the road at scenic locations. Thursday, Aug. 18, it’s all about Saranac Lake! It’s “Paint the Town” Day and the 40 participating artists will find their inspiration in the village. Some will choose the lake or river views, others may focus on historic buildings or street scenes. This is when the small paintings are done and submitted for the “Paint the Town” Silent Auction, which will be set up at the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery, 52 Main St., by 5 p.m. It’s also a 3rd Thursday ArtWalk evening, so many other area artists and crafts people will have their displays set up on the sidewalks and several venues will host live music. It’s 100% immersion in the arts! Friday, Aug. 19 is the deadline. Artists are invited to come paint at the Saranac Lake Fish & Game Club in the morning, but will need to deliver their framed paintings for the exhibit at 10 a.m. They will be free to continue paintings while their framed pieces are being judged by Carol Douglas, an artist from Maine. The “Special Preview

Party” opens in the Town Hall at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased online, through the ArtWorks website, or at the door. Ticket holders will have the first chance to see the 200-300 brand new, still wet, paintings and to find out who the prize winners are. Each year the event gives out around $5000 in prizes, many donated by long-standing supporters in our community. Saturday, Aug. 20 is a day of fun. There is a “Quick Draw” competition from 9-11 a.m. where artists will only have two hours to do a painting. Most will paint in the Village so they can bring their completed paintings to the front of the Town Hall for judging at 11:30 a.m. The Show & Sale in the Town Hall will open at noon with free admission. The Silent Auction will be moved to the Town Hall and will end at 4 p.m. The Show & Sale will end at 5 p.m. and the festival will be over. This is a great opportunity to experience the Adirondacks

and bring home a truly unique souvenir — an original work of art! More information can be found at SaranacLakeArtWorks.org. Impossible to make the Adirondack Plein Air Festival in August? Well, the Saranac Lake event has inspired two additional plein air festivals held in Franklin County. The Downtown Artist Cellar in Malone will be holding the “Outside Art Affair,” beginning July 17. Artists need to register, but can then paint whenever they want to, in northern Franklin County, delivering their framed paintings to the Gallery for an exhibit the weekend of Aug 6-7. Tupper Arts returns with 2022 Season TUPPER LAKE — Nestled in the heart of Tupper Lake is the Tupper Arts Center, found in the shopping district on Park Street. For almost five years, they have been huge providers and supporters of the arts in the small community and the surrounding areas. This summer, they are back in full swing, having arranged a multitude of diverse galleries, performances, and classes, certainly supplying something for everyone. After a winter of renovations, the Tupper Arts Center is reopening on May 1, happy to welcome everyone back to their now-permanent home, thanks to their 2021-2023 Capital Campaign. Kicking off the season is the return of the Kathleen Bigrow photograph series, Mostly Spruce & Hemlock, Tupper Lake’s Logging Heritage. In collaboration with the Tupper Lake Heritage Museum, hundreds of the former Adirondack Daily Enterprise-photographer’s pictures will be on display to celebrate the rich logging history of Tupper Lake. In June, the gallery will fill up with a range of work by Tupper Lake’s talented artisans in the 49th Annual Tupper Lake Arts Show, and Under Adirondack Skies, displaying the photography of Eric Adsit, who beautifully captures the majesty of the Adirondacks. In July, the Tupper Arts Center will be showing the Whimsical Twig & Bark Creations by Adirondack Craftsman Mike Campisi, whose life’s work it was to create exquisite Adirondack furniture. Artists Patrick McPhee and Patricia Bellerose’s paintings will further brighten up the gallery with their (Provided photo) show Home in the Adirondacks: Paddling Perspectives, highlighting their love for the beauty of the Adirondacks. Also in July will be the return of the Summer Sunset Series at the Tupper Lake Sunset Stage, now on Mondays and Wednesdays. Much-loved local bands Night School and Spring Street will be heading our July 4 celebration, followed by spectacular fireworks. On Wednesday, July 6, Tupper-Lake group On 3 will be jamming, with indie rock band Ursa and the Major Key on the next Monday, July 11. The fun in July does not end there, with The Altered Tones performing on Wednesday, July 13, and bossa-nova group Geo Beat

on Monday, July 18. Finishing the month is country-singer Larry Lee Ebere on Wednesday, July 20, and duo Claire & Mickey on Wednesday, July 27. The Summer Sunset Series is in collaboration with the Village of Tupper Lake and sponsored in part by New York State Music. All performances are free to attend, and in case of rain will take place at the Tupper Lake Middle-High School Auditorium. Looking for something for the family? The Little Loggers Kids Shows also return in July, happening every Friday at 11 a.m. at the Tupper Lake Sunset Stage, free and fun for everyone! “Kindie Rock” performer Jumpin’ Jamie returns for his third season on July 8, followed by Grotto Family, supplying side-splitting physical comedy on July 15. On July 22, Kit’s Interactive Theater returns to the bandshell, this year to tell the story of Grace, based on the historical Irish pirate Grace O’Malley. To finish out the month, comedy ventriloquist Sylvia Fletcher will be performing on July 29. The Little Loggers Kids Shows are sponsored generously in full by the Aseel Legacy Fund. All performances are free to attend, and in case of rain will take place at the Tupper Lake Middle-High School Auditorium. Moving to August, the Tupper Arts Center is opening the month with The Elusive Wild: Sculptures & Paintings by PJ LaBarge, whose love for the untamed Adirondacks comes through in her articulate bronze sculptures and painting. Simultaneously, Tyler Schrader’s Wood-En-Lightened: Sculpture, Furniture, Light, and Video will light up the arts center gallery. Tyler marks the future of woodworking with his use of sound, light, gems, and video to bring his creations to life. There will be an opening reception on Aug. 3 for Tyler Schrader’s show. The Summer Sunset Series continues in August, as we welcome Shakespeare in the Park back to the bandshell on Monday, Aug. 1 with their production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Essex County Arts Council increases support to artists of all disciplines

he arts are vital to building strong, resilient communities. They help us to relax, inspire us, give us courage, bring us joy. Essex County is rich with creative vision and the Essex County Arts Council supports a wide spectrum of activities including performing, visual, historical/heritage, music and literary arts. 2021 was a year of rebuilding and reconnecting with audiences. After 2020, a year of virtually no (or at least very few) cultural activities, the artists and arts organizations of Essex County have struggled to find their way back into our lives. Essex County Arts Council was there with them all the way, through a financial expansion of both regrant programs, and with a major increase in a social media presence. In 2021, ECAC funded 38 organizations with CAP (Cultural Assistance Program) grants. Thanks to the Essex County Board of Supervisors and loyal ECAC donors, each group received 85-90% of requested amounts. For 2022, the Essex County Board of Supervisors have expressed their support of the arts in the county with an increase in county funding for this invaluable regrant program. This year, 42 organizations have requested CAP funds for a wide variety of projects. The Google map, added to our website in 2021, shows just how many arts and cultural organizations exist in Essex County. You’ll find it at www.essexcountyarts.org/content/arts-map. This year, the Essex County Arts Council is excited to announce a newly reimagined microgrant opportunity for artists of all genres. Now called the Sunburst Award, this program supports creators of art in Essex County by providing a stipend of up to $500 toward a project, training or an activity that will further an artist’s careers. Do you have a pet project you’ve been dying to try but are a little short on materials, money for PR, or do you want to learn a new technique that could take

your art to the next level? Through this program —previously called the Artist Career Development Grant — ECAC has funded projects that included musical composition, publishing an art portfolio, the creation of musical instruments, creative fly fishing lures and taxidermy. A simple, straightforward application is available, as is assistance in preparing a request. Application deadline is Oct. 1. ECAC is a non-profit organization. Your support will help us to promote and advocate for the Arts here where you live and vacation. Please ask any grant recipient how important their grant was to them and consider making a donation to strengthen our outreach.

East Branch Friends of the Arts features a wide range of concerts

n 1996, trustees Linda Fisher, Sam Fisk, Ruth Kuhfahl, Mary Lawrence, Lelia Matthews, Peter Proud and Barbara Strowger, with Lulu Brown as Honorary Chairman, began East Branch Friends of the Arts. Peter Proud suggested the name for the organization and Linda Fisher created the logo. Based in the town of Keene, East Branch Friends of the Arts is a community-based, non-profit group dedicated to supporting and promoting the visual and performing arts; expanding opportunities of involvement in arts events for residents and visitors; developing and showcasing the community’s rich musical, artistic, literary heritage; and instilling a love of the arts and learning in children. Past and current activities include play readings, poetry readings, chamber music concerts, artists studio tours, dramatic presentations, snow sculpture contests, photography contests and jazz concerts. EBFA welcomes the support and suggestions of the year round and seasonal residents of Keene, and those of our many visitors. Cole Quest and the City Pickers Aug. 20, 8 p.m., Keene Valley Congregational Church

Cole Quest and The City Pickers are a group of New York City musicians connected by friendship and a love of bluegrass. Cole Quest, grandson of the folk icon Woody Guthrie, has brought together a collection of eclectic pickers who have gained recognition on the local scene. Performing both Quest’s original tunes as well as traditional favorites, The City Pickers bring their special brand of high-spirited talent to the stage, with up-beat, knee slapping energy and a high lonesome sound that’ll leave you wanting more. They’ve shared the stage with great musicians such as Sarah Jaroz, Blind Boy Paxton, Tony Trischka, and many others, and have been featured in leading publications like Bluegrass Today, American Songwriter, and more. On Monday, Aug. 8, popular Nashville-based duo Martin and Kelly will be returning, with Bitter-Sweet taking us through the decades of music on Wednesday, Aug. 10. New York City-based Jamaican pop group The Big Takeover will be performing on Monday, Aug. 15, followed by The Rustic Riders on Wednesday, Aug. 17 with their “bouncy and danceable” songs. Finishing the series is The Bob Stump Band on Monday, Aug. 22 with their classic Americana sound, and Adirondack acoustic-duo Blessid Dirt on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The Little Loggers Kids Shows continue Fridays in August, as the popular Dinoman returns on Aug. 5 with his fast-paced exploration of our solar system. Students receive a unique view of the heavens with Dinoman Space’s use of dinosaurs, meteors, comets, liquid air, and even a goldfish! Finishing up the month on Aug. 12, comedy magician Tim Dumas returns with another fun-filled performance. To finish out Tupper Arts’ season, the popular Plein Air Festival is returning for the fourth year in a row in October. Artists from all over journey to Tupper Lake for a week to paint the beautiful vistas of the town and the surrounding areas. The festival wraps up with a show and sale at the Tupper Arts Center. Here with Cole Quest and The City Pickers, the fun-index was in overdrive.” Berta Rojas Sept. 17, 7:30 p.m., Keene Valley Congregational Church When a 7 year old girl in Asuncion, Paraguay named Berta Rojas first picked up a guitar and began to play, nobody could have imagined she would one day become a world famous musician and one of her country’s most beloved musical artists. But that’s exactly what happened. Berta would go on to perform in many prestigious concert venues including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, record Grammy nominated CDs, be named as one of the most influential women in Hispanic culture, and be awarded the title Illustrious Ambassador of Musical Arts by her native Paraguay. Berta seamlessly blends Latin and Classical music, infusing everything she plays with her outstanding warmth, virtuosity, and a remarkable ability to connect with audiences. Latina Magazine once wrote “In the hands of Berta Rojas, the classical guitar truly becomes the world’s instrument—a means of bridging wide cultural divides via the uncommon clarity and inherent loveliness of her music.” Berta has long been considered one of the greatest interpreters of the music of Augustin Barrios Mangore, the legendary guitaristcomposer from Paraguay who thrilled audiences across the world in the early 20th century. Berta was honored to perform the soundtrack of an awardwinning feature film based on Barrios’s life and work. She is also a committed educator, a professor at the Berklee College of Music, and the founder of a Pan-American guitar competition for young people.

Listening to the progressive folk-Americana duo Honeysuckle for the first time can be something of a surprise; you might hear some throaty mandolin playing over a fingerpicked guitar, and then out of nowhere an electronic effect right out of a good film score sneaks in and changes the whole vibe. The Boston-based musicians Holly McGarry and Chris Bloniarz definitely have put their own stamp on the folk genre, blending innovation with tradition in a really effective and fun way. The two musicians met at the Berklee College of Music in 2012, and came together to form a band out of a shared love of Americana music, counting Gillian Welch and Andrew Bird among their chief influences. Holly had grown up in Idaho and studied Bluegrass guitar, while Chris, from Long Island, started studying piano at age 4 before eventually playing violin and mandolin. Now they can frequently be found performing across the country. Honeysuckle has performed at Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza, Mountain Jam, Americanafest, Otis Mountain Get Down and Audiotree. They have won an impressive array of awards, including Americana Artist of the Year (2019) and Folk Artist of the Year (2018) at the Boston Music Awards, in addition to having been nominated every year since 2016. NPR named Honeysuckle one of the “Top 10 bands of 2016 So Far.” The duo has released four full length albums: Great Divide (2021), Fire Starter (2019), Catacombs (2017), and Honeysuckle (2015). LAKE PLACID — The Songs at Mirror Lake Music Series has announced that The Pines Inn will, once again, be the Whole Note (Title) Sponsor for the 2022 season. This is the 13th year The Pines Inn has committed to supporting the music series. In addition, the Hampton Inn has been added as the Half Note (Presenting) Sponsor for a second consecutive year. Songs at Mirror Lake Music Series is held at 7 p.m. on seven Tuesdays throughout the summer at Mid’s Park on Main Street in Lake Placid. These weekly performances, running from June 28 through Aug. 9, feature local, regional and national acts in the scenic and historic setting of Mid’s Park. The series features local and regional emerging artists in a variety of musical genres and provides valuable exposure to these up and coming acts. The music series is also an opportunity to introduce residents and visitors to a diverse range of musical genres in a scenic and relaxing setting. In its sixteenth year, The Pines Inn Songs at Mirror Lake Music Series presented by Hampton Inn is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is comprised of a volunteer committee with all expenses covered by sponsorship and donations. Concerts are also made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts as well as the National Endowment for the Arts. Seagle Festival celebrates 107th year

SCHROON LAKE _ Seagle Festival will celebrate its 107th season in 2022, continuing as the premiere opera and musical theatre producing organization in the Adirondack region, as well as the oldest summer vocal training program in the U.S. After a cancelled 2020 season and a highly adjusted 2021 season due to the pandemic, Seagle Festival is thrilled to return to a more typical summer and early fall season for 2022. The four-show mainstage summer season includes the blockbuster musical Hello, Dolly!, by Jerry Herman, and a double bill of two one-act Italian operas by Giacomo Puccini - Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. The mainstage season will continue with the North Country premiere of Fellow Travelers, an American opera premiered in 2016 by Gregory Spears and Greg Pierce. This frequently performed new opera tells the tumultuous love story of two men working in the U.S. Government during the “Lavender Scare” of the 1950’s McCarthy Era. The mainstage summer season will wrap up with Once Upon A Mattress, the re-telling of the Princess and the Pea story by Mary Rodgers. Through the summer and into the school year, Seagle Festival will continue its focus on cultivating new audiences by presenting the children’s opera The Three Bears by Jonathan Stinson. Also touring the region in the early fall will be a revue of music of the esteemed late composer Stephen Sondheim. All the summer and fall productions will feature the 32 extremely talented 2022 Seagle Festival emerging artists, an elite group chosen from a field of hundreds of applicants. Alongside the performances, the emerging artists will participate in career training to help propel them into their professional careers. The Lake Placid Sinfonietta returns in 2022 to present The Sounds of Summer from July 6 through Aug. 14. The orchestra will perform in a variety of settings, and concerts will vary from traditional classical to light pops programming. “This will be an extremely varied, entertaining and inspiring program which combines standard repertoire like Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony with less familiar new masterworks by living composers,” Music Director Stuart Malina said. Six Symphony Series concerts at will be held at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts theater and will feature exciting guest artists as well as both in-person and virtual ticketing options. Six outdoor Park Series concerts are scheduled as are concerts at the Tannery Pond Center in North Creek, The Wild Center in Tupper Lake and at the Hotel Saranac in Saranac Lake. The Symphony Series at the LPCA will feature both in-person and live-streamed ticketing. Series tickets for all six concerts are available through June 30, with a guarantee of the same seating at each concert. Each concert will be approximately one hour without intermission and will be followed by a complementary meet-the-artist outdoor reception under the box-office portico. The Symphony Series starts on July 10 with the return of Dallas Symphony concertmaster Alexander Kerr performing Jonathan Leshnoff’s Chamber Concerto followed by a collaboration with Sinfonietta concertmaster Daniel Szasz for the mighty Bach Double. On July 17, pianist Sara Davis Buechner takes the stage to offer Mendelssohn’s Second Piano Concerto in a program that will include a prizewinning work by Gwyneth Walker previously commissioned by the Lake Placid Sinfonietta. The third concert in the series, Masters’ Trio Supreme on July 23 will include Beethoven’s Pastoral, Rossini’s Scala di Seta and Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll. (While this concert series has traditionally been on Sunday evenings, the July 23 concert was moved to Saturday to accommodate traffic challenges posed by the Ironman Triathlon race on July 24.) On July 31, the Sinfonietta is pleased to present a concert of all American Music sponsored by the Victor Herbert Foundation. This concert will include Sinfonietta concertmaster Daniel Szasz as soloist in O Magnum Mysterium by Morton Lauridsen, Strum by Jessie Montgomery, and a presentation of Voices from the Gallery by Stephen Paulus with Leigh Barrett narrating.

A second Guest pianist, Jeffrey Biegel, joins the orchestra on Aug. 7th for Saint Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in a concert that ends with Elgar’s Enigma Variations. For the last concert in this series, the Sinfonietta is partnering with the Adirondack Sky Center in Tupper Lake for a multi-media presentation of Holst’s The Planets paired with the world premiere of a new piece by Sinfonietta trumpeter, Steven Franklin. The six free Wednesday evening Park Series concerts will return to Mid’s Park in downtown Lake Placid on July 6 at 7 p.m. with St. Agnes Church as a rainsite. Concert dates this year are: July 6, “American Patriot,” July 13 “Dance Music,” July 20 “Travelogue,” July 27 “Music of Theater,” Aug. 3 “Folksy Music,” and Aug. 10 “Orchestra Dazzlers sponsored by NBT Bank.” Limited seating is available, so concertgoers are encouraged to bring a blanket or light lawn chair to sit on. If it rains on the night of a concert, or the temperature is likely to dip below 65 during the concert, the performance will be held in at St. Agnes Church on Saranac Ave., a short walk from the park. This rain site venue has a large parking lot, ample seating and great acoustics. If a move to the rain site occurs, the concert will begin at 7:15 p.m. rather than 7 p.m. In addition to these concerts in Lake Placid, the orchestra will perform in Tupper Lake at The Wild Center on July 14, at the Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek on July 21, and Free Community Concert sponsored by Adirondack Health at the Hotel Saranac in Saranac Lake on July 28. For those reading who are unfamiliar with this musical gem of the Adirondacks, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta is a fully professional chamber orchestra of twenty musicians who are some of the top players from larger orchestras across the country. Aside from a break in 2020 for the pandemic and in 1945 for World War II, the orchestra has performed every summer since 1917, making music a part of summer in the Adirondacks for residents and visitors alike. ‘Back in Blue, Act II: The Magic Returns!’ BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts has announced its lineup of programming for the 2022 season, “Back in Blue, Act II: The Magic Returns!” featuring a return to the “magic” of live music and theater, along with new art exhibits and the first workshops and kids’ activities there since pre-pandemic years. The Arts Center lineup will include classical, folk, rock, alternative and Broadway music through its Weekend Series, including legendary pianist Misha Dichter performing on the Arts Center Steinway on Aug. 6. The magic continues with three Adirondack Lakes Summer Theatre Festival productions, all with the theme of enchantment and love. “55 years ago, in 1967, a little group called the Beatles came out with The Magical Mystery Tour, a musical tour de force that helped define a generation,” says ALCA Artistic General Director George Cordes. “That same year, Jim and Sheila Hutt founded the arts center in Blue Mountain Lake, a magical place that has continued to help define what the arts mean to our Adirondack communities.” The arts center is open through summer and fall, and hours will be Wednesday-Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., with gallery exhibits featured all season in the Arts Center’s firstfloor spaces. The Gift Shop will also reopen to the public. All current New York State COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. The Weekend Series kicks off on Saturday, June 11, with the classic rock of Tri-Lakes band Spring Street. On Saturday, June 18, Ryan Leddick & George Kuubetesuri bring original alternative, African rhythm-influenced music. Duo Ingolfsson-Stoupel rounds out the month with a program of classical violin and piano on Saturday, June 25. All concerts of the Weekend Series begin at 7 p.m. The Adirondack Lakes Summer Theatre Festival also returns with three touring productions: the romantic comedy 2 Across by Jerry Mayer, with performances July 7-11; an abridged A Midsummer Night’s Dream, free and outdoors, July 30-Aug 4; and Beguiled Again, the Music of Rodgers & Hart, with performances August 12-15. The festival concludes with Bewitched at Sagamore: A Concert featuring Rodgers & Hart favorites at Great Camp Sagamore on Wednesday, Aug. 17. Visual-arts exhibits at the arts center will resume with its Members’ Show, along with the return of the macro photography of Cathy Marczyk and drawings on shelf mushrooms by Robert Hameline. A number of wonderful artists have applied for 2022 gallery shows, and a list of subsequent exhibits will be released in the coming weeks. In-person workshops, lectures, and Kids’ Camp activities will also be reintroduced in the 2022 season, with more information to come. To close its season, the Arts Center welcomes back the songs and skits of our Adirondack neighbors in Forever Wild, with two performances Oct.7-8 for ALCA’s season finale. Meadowmount School Artists Guild returns in-person Celebrates 25 Years SARANAC LAKE — The 14 current members of the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery are celebrating the 25th year in business on Main Street, Saranac Lake. The Gallery originally opened, in the space now occupied by Origin Coffee, in December 1997. The Gallery operates as a co-op. Each member pays a monthly fee and they all volunteer their time to help manage the various galleries tasks from maintaining the website, to keeping the books, to writing the press releases, painting the (Enterprise photo — griffin kelly) walls and more. There are new exhibits every month, featuring one of the member artists. The schedule for 2022 includes Susan Lebeda in May, Eleanor Sweeney in June, Anastasia Osolin in July, Nancy Brossard in August, Barry Lobdell in September, Jeanne Danforth in October, Jacqueline Altman in November, and the newest member of the co-op, Karen Morris in December. Eleanor Sweeney is the only original member still showing her work in the Gallery. Annual Childwold Chamber Music Series returns for third year Provides e-News for events in the Blue Line

dirondack A&E, or ADK A&E, is an online arts and entertainment information and resource guide for the Adirondacks, covering art and craft galleries, the performing arts, museums, restaurants, nightclubs and breweries. ADK A&E helps artists and venues get the word out about their events on one hand, while on the other providing a go-to guide for people on the lookout for interesting things to see and do. It includes a three-times-a-week e-News for subscribers, a website with a directory of arts and entertainment establishments and organizations, and a calendar of events inside the Blue Line. Each issue of the e-News is also archived on the website, along with a search function to locate past items of interest. “Instead of a static calendar or guide, ADK A&E is a dynamic platform that allows theaters, galleries and the like to quickly and directly communicate with a targeted audience that’s eager for entertainment news and ideas,” said Beth Rowland, co-publisher, along with husband Tim of ADK A&E. “We saw the real need for a service like JCN for the arts community, aimed at both the consumers and producers of arts and entertainment. We hope folks will turn to ADK A&E to explore all the vibrant Adirondack arts and entertainment community has to offer. POTSDAM — Exceptional live music amid the pine trees will be created this summer by four talented groups on five different dates as the North Country’s only year-round professional symphony orchestra presents small ensemble groups at the Childwold Memorial Presbyterian Church in Childwold. The Orchestra of Northern New York, based in Potsdam and celebrating its 35th anniversary year in 2022-2023, invites the public to the Third Annual Childwold Chamber Music Series. Kicking off the summer line-up will be an ice cream social with entertainment by Gretchen Koehler, member of the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame, and Barb Heller, vocals and guitar, the renowned host of North Country Public Radio’s String Fever. The social begins at 2 p.m. Adirondack Pro Musica, an outstanding quartet of flute, violin, viola and cello, presents two concerts on July 14 and Sept.1. Members hail from Potsdam, Boston and Montreal. Sebastian Buhts, from St. Louis, MO, performs incredible music on the marimba at 7 p.m. on Aug. 4. The dynamic husband and wife duo of Karl Doty (bass) and Liesl Schoenberger Doty (violin) entertain with a program of blended-genre music on Aug. 18. With the exception of the July 9 concert, all performances begin at 7 p.m. Seating is limited, so guests are accommodated on a first come, first served basis. BOLTON LANDING — The Sembrich reopened in May following an extensive historic preservation project that provided critical updates to the treasured facility. The project included a new roof, improved lighting, complete rewiring of the building, HVAC replacement, restoration of historic light fixtures, and more. The newly improved facility will host several performances in The Sembrich’s 2022 Summer Festival “Reimagining the Classics,” as well as new museum exhibits. “We are thrilled to welcome visitors back into our historic building to experience the magic of music and history in a delightful lakeside setting,” said Executive Director Suzanna M. Tahawus Cultural Center announces its 2022 Season AU SABLE FORKS — Tahawus Center is a historic building that sits on the banks of the famed fly-fishing West Branch of the Ausable River, in the hamlet of Au Sable Forks. Adirodack Center for Writing features first ever Kickass Writers Festival SARANAC LAKE — The Adirondack Center for Writing will present its first Kickass Writers Festival, featuring writers, poets, comedians, mountaineers and more on Aug. 19 and 20. The festival will take place across various locations all over Saranac Lake and will include readings, workshops, talks, publishing programs, special performances, a book fair, speed dating, and more. The Kickass Writers Festival celebrates how writing and storytelling-in all of their forms-are essential to art, entertainment and social change. The two-day event will kick-off Friday, Aug. 19 at Pendragon Theater with the 2021 New York State Author, AYAD AKHTAR, and the 2021 New York State Poet, Willie Perdomo. The pair will be introduced by former New York State Writer, Russell Banks along with the award-winning poet Chase Twitchell. On Saturday, Aug. 20, ACW will present memoirist, feminist, and humanitarian, Silvia Vasquez-Lavado, the first Peruvian woman to climb Mt. Everest and the first openly gay woman to climb The Seven Summits (the highest mountains on each of the seven continents). Her debut memoir, In the Shadow of the Mountain, tells the story of how an early life of abuse and addiction led her to discover hiking as a method of healing. These pursuits transformed her life and empowered her to not only climb the world’s most challenging

summits, but also to found the non-profit, Courageous Girls “...dedicated to healing and empowering survivors of violence and abuse through adventures in nature.” Her memoir is currently being adapted into a major motion picture starring Selena Gomez. Diane Leifheit has been painting plein air in pastels for over 20 years beginning with local events and participating in regional and international festivals, winning second place in Parrsboro Plein Air International Festival in 2020. As a pastel painter, color is what grabs Diane Leifheit. Her home base, the Adirondack Mountains of New York, contains the whole spectrum of color from the blue that is a shadow in a snowbank, to the myriad greens of summer, to the riot of autumn leaves. Leifheit’s medium of pastel allows her to construct a close interpretation of a particular landscape, but also exhibit the freedom to capture a mood in the work like misty mornings, swirling snow storms or the atmosphere of a hot, humid day. Most recently she has painted as far away as Norfolk, Virginia and Parrsboro, Nova Scotia and as close as her own backyard. A few years ago she spent a year making one-foot-square pastel portraits of people who live, work and visit in Saranac Lake. The final exhibit in the Saranac Lake Free Library had 185 portraits looking right back at the viewer in the Thomas Cantwell Community Room where all the portraits were hung. Leifheit is a passionate advocate for the medium of pastel. Diane says, “Pastel will keep its color. Unlike an oil painting, it will not suffer from atmospheric changes in the home, i.e. wood smoke, kitchen smoke. World Sk8ting & Arts makes figure-skating more accessible

uring the coronavirus pandemic, five olympians knew that they had an opportunity to make figure-skating, specifically the “Art of Skating” with fine arts and academics, more accessible to more people. World Figure Sport’s Board of Directors include those five olympians: Dorothy Hamill, Barbara Wagner, Bibi-Moritz, Patrick Kelly and Karen Courtland Kelly. “The World Sk8ting & Arts School and Academics Virtual Academy was launched virtually in 2020 to make art,” Courtland Kelly said. The various aspects include painting, drawing, knitting, calligraphy, culinary arts and figures and fancy skating. There’s even — craving alert — the “art of skating” in chocolate. But before the school was launched, the World Figure Sport Society, not-for-profit, built a new skating history since it’s striking beginnings in 2015 as an international independent sports organization that expands traditional figure-skating in modern times, which is known as Figures and Fancy Skating. 2022 is the 8th anniversary year of the World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships on black ice. Why black ice as a canvas? Courtland Kelly explained the “Black ice reveals to the world the great ‘Art of Skating’ made by the blades of the world class or developing skating artist. Plus, we have a healthy approach to education that links figures and fancy skating to all the culinary, fiber, fine arts and academics to improve not only one’s education but one’s quality of life at any age.” Kelly has researched books dating back to the 18th Century which detail how skating was considered an art form. Nancy Haley has experienced the school not as a skater, but as an adult wanting to develop her love of fine arts. “As a student, I connect to my inner peace through the creativity of drawing and painting in the art programs. Gary Casagrain, a native of the Adirondacks, has been creating art for over 40 years. Study, persistence and patience have given the artist not only the technical ability but the artistic wisdom for freedom of expression. Born in June of 1957, he soon realized his desire for the arts. WESTPORT — The Depot Theatre will ease into live theater’s “new normal” with a decidedly abnormal (and eclectic) three-show lineup for the 2022 main stage season, which features a tribute to Stephen Sondheim, a riveting drama and a spookily hilarious musical. The only professional Equity theater in the Adirondacks, the Depot will continue to adhere to government and Actors’ Equity health and safety guidelines. “Just as we creatively manage the on-stage reaction to trains that interrupt our performances, we are prepared for whatever protocols we’ll need to implement to protect our cast and patrons,” said Kim Rielly, Depot Theatre Executive Director. “As in 2021, we appreciate everyone’s support and flexibility in making it possible to experience live theater yet again.” The season opens with the humorous, poignant and sophisticated musical review Putting It Together. This show is a celebration of the stage and screen work of multiple Tony Award-winner Stephen Sondheim, the foremost theatrical composer/lyricist of our time. Sondheim passed away in 2021 at the age of 91. The show weaves a lyrical story around the emotions and relationships of five guests attending a Manhattan cocktail party, and it features material from a number of Sondheim’s works, including Anyone Can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday In The Park With George and Into The Woods. The show will run from June 30 through July 17. Next up for the season, beginning July 21 through August 7, is Red by John Logan. Raw and provocative, Red is a moving and compelling account of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, whose struggle to accept his growing riches and praise became his ultimate undoing. Based on the real-life commission Rothko received in 1958 to create a series of murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York, Red is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting. Viewed through the lens of his youthful new assistant Ken, they challenge
