Miles ROUTE: Head west on Route 86 (River St.) and go straight through the triangle until you reach Pine Street. Turn right on Pine, which becomes McKenzie Pond Road. Turn left on Route 86, after about three miles and you’re on your way to Lake Placid. Stay on this road for about 5.5 miles until you get to the intersection with Mirror Lake Drive where you want to go left. This will take you around the lake and back out on the other end of town in front of the Olympic oval. Go left and then right onto Route 73, then take another right on Averyville Road which leads you to Old Military Road and back to Route 86.

DISTANCE: 17.4 miles ROUTE: Follow Route 3 East to Bloomingdale. Go straight through the stop sign in Bloomingdale (Route 3 goes right) and bear left onto the Bloomingdale-Gabriels Road. Take that to Split Rock Road in Gabriels and go left. The Split Rock itself is on the left and soon you’re on Route 86 heading back to Saranac Lake.

DISTANCE: 20.8 miles ROUTE: Take Route 3 West, turn right on Edgewood Road (just after high school). Edgewood turns into Ampersand, then take a left on Forest Home Road. Ride up Forest Home for about 8.5 miles to Route 30 and turn right. Bear right onto Route 186 and after four miles, you’ll be on 86 heading back to Saranac Lake.

HILL FACTOR: Relatively flat until just before Gabriels. From there it’s a steady uphill until reaching the high point. That’s when it’s time to tighten your helmet for a roller coaster ride back into Saranac Lake. Lake Clear Loop

Hamner’s Big Return to Saranac Lake

At the finish line, as paddlers were exhausted but close to the end, a giant crowd gathered on the banks, shouting “Pull!” and “Finish strong!”The races were kicked off with the firing of a miniature cannon by Chris Dyer. Though it was small in size, firing 10-guage shotgun blanks, its sound was so massive it carried through the entire town and left the ears of anyone standing nearby ringing for several minutes. This historic cannon was lost for nearly as

The Willard Hanmer Guideboat and Canoe race returned on Sunday, July 3 after a decade of absence, in time for the historic race’s 60th anniversary.

Dozens of racers took to the waters and hundreds lined the shoreline to cheer them on. Kathy said so many signed up the day of the race, they ran out of numbers — the races were full.

This river race featured a 0.2-mile carry. Paddlers hefted their boats over their heads across Main Street, through a parking lot and down a hill to put back in after the dam.

In total, 92 racers competed in 56 boats. The paddlers strained hard, pulling on their oars to send their boats cutting through the water.

Tim first got into guideboats when he decided to fix up his father’s old, run-down boat in their garage.“Aguideboat saved his life,” Sue said. It kept him away from the bars, Robin said.

Robin said the Hanmer has always been a bit of a family reunion for their family, whose extended family members drive and fly in from all around to visit and cheer. long as the race had been away, but was found just weeks ago. Doyle spent over three decades racing in, and helping organize the Hanmer. He died 10 years ago, after the last Hanmer race before this one. Robin Doyle, his wife, said the race meant a lot to him. Not only was it a time for him to share in his guideboat passion with his family and community, but it was also an event that helped him beat“Headdiction.wasanalcoholic and he stopped drinking, mainly because he started building guideboats and then he started racing them,” Robin said.

She said Tim took training for the Hanmer seriously, paddling miles up and down the lakes every day in preparation for weeks beforehand. He was an eight-time winner of the one man guideboat race.

Patterson originally thought he’d have a one-year stint with the symphony, but there was another vacancy in 2018. He filled that seat, and after that, he was hired as a tenured player. He thought, “Yay! I get to come back!”

Memphis violinist keeps returning for some Sinfonietta Seasons

Patterson plays Principal Second Violin with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra full time, and during summer breaks, he’s here playing Principal Second Violin with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta. It might seem like Patterson is working on his vacation by taking on the Sinfonietta job, but he said he treats performing here like a “working vacation.”

“So after that, it’s something I’ve looked forward to every year,” he said.

“I’m not a 46er — I’m a 3er,” he said.Patterson has a soft spot for Keene and Keene Valley because it’s quiet, the properties are spread out, and he’s found the community there to be friendly and easy to connect with. He said he loves the Keene Farmers Market on Sundays.

“I’m all about the cheese,” he said. Patterson said he gets excited about local cheese, listing Dutch Knuckle, made by Sugar House Creamery in Upper Jay, as a favorite. He said he doesn’t find that kind of cheese in the rest of the country.

AMemphian and tenured vio linist with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta has found beauty, community and a feeling of home in the GaylonAdirondacks.Patterson, Principal Second Violin with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, first came to play violin with the Sinfonietta by following what he called a “tenuous thread.”

“As soon as I got here I thought, ‘Wow, this place is not like any place I’ve ever been before,’” he said. “It’s much more beautiful than I expected, and I expected a lot.”

Patterson arrived a week prior to the concert series. He wanted to chill and get in a hike or two before the season started. He isn’t a serious hiker, but he loves trails like Baxter Mountain — which backs up to the Keene Valley farmhouse he stays in while in town and Roaring Brook Falls.

Patterson said he didn’t just feel a sense of place when he first got to the Adirondacks — the area felt like home. He said his ancestors from the 17th century settled in Connecticut, northern New York and Ontario. While his family hasn’t lived around here in a couple of hundred years, he wonders if that’s part of why he felt so connected to the area.“Who knows, maybe there’s some genetic memory in there or something that made me think, ‘Oh this feels right, this place feels really good to me,’” he said.

There was a vacancy in the symphony in 2017, and the wife of a former colleague called Patterson “out of the blue” to see if he was interested in filling the position. Patterson said he didn’t know a single soul in the Adirondacks, but he was up for a new adventure. His connection to the area was instant upon arrival.
