She’s history

Lake Placid Historian Beverely Reid retires at 89

By Rose Wenzler

O

n Jan. 16, Beverley Reid, who retired from her job as historian of the village of Lake Placid and town of North Elba on Dec. 31, turned 89 years old. Reid has lived on the Wilmington Road most of her life, though in a different house today, right next to the Cobble Mountain Lodge. And she has many memories and stories of the village. “My earliest memories of the arena was probably 6 or 7 years old because I joined the Lake Placid Skating Club,” she said. “When Roy Rogers was here (Dec. 30, 1944), they dressed me up as a reindeer,” she continued. “And I pulled a sleigh. There were eight of us, and we were dressed up like reindeer, and we pulled the sleigh around the arena.” Reid was 11 years old at the time. Reid became the town and village historian in 2001, taking over from Mary MacKenzie, and she worked with the new historian, Karen Fountain, for a whole year before she retired. Reid graduated from the Lake Placid High School in 1950. Then she went to the Albany Business College and took the executive secretary course. Aside from college, working briefly at Prudential Insurance in Albany and Long Beach, California, she has spent all her life in Lake Placid. When she moved back home, she worked for attorney Harold Soden and then ran her own business.

“I did a lot of typing and bookkeeping while I was raising my seven children,” she said in 2015 before being inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame. Then Reid worked for Jim Strack at Tri Lakes Electric from the late 1970s until his death in 2005. Reid also did a lot of volunteer work in the community, with organizations such as the Lake Placid Pee Wee Association, Lake Placid Central School Alumni Association, Adirondack Community Church in Lake Placid, Lake PlacidNorth Elba Historical Society, Lake Placid Beautification and the Lake Placid Public Library. Reid has lived a full life and been a part of important times in Lake Placid’s history. She has served our village and town as historian for a long time. Recording and keeping all those history records is a big job. It keeps history alive. “It’s important to keep the history of the village or the town, whatever it is, up to date,” she said. Reid said her favorite part about being the town historian is You meet an awful lot of nice people. The very first person I met I had to be a judge at one of the conventions. ... And this lady came up to me and she was the historian for Plattsburgh. And her name was Addie Shields. And she ended up being one of my very best friends.”

LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS

Steve Short’s view from a lifetime in the sky Lake Placid’s airport manager retiring

S

By Lauren Yates

list.

teve Short has been the Lake Placid airport manager for nearly 48 years, and as he readied for retirement this year, he said he has a lot of things on his bucket

One: hang out with the kids more often. Short has a son, a daughter and two grandkids living in Bellingham, Washington, who want him to live there. Short said he’ll go visit for a few months a year, but he’s staying here for the time being. Two: Go skiing out West more often. Luckily, the kids are out there. Three: See more countries. He’s seen around 34 already, but there are more calling his name. Four: Go golfing, maybe join a golf club. Short has always liked to golf, but he never found the time. Five, and maybe the most important one: Live more life in the Adirondacks instead of flying over all the action. “I love Lake Placid, but in the summertime I’m looking down at everybody having a lot of fun,” Short said. “I want to spend more time hiking the mountains and using the water.” Short has stayed busy since 1974, when his mom called him on a June day and said his dad had suffered an aneurysm and needed help with the flying business in Lake Placid. Short was working for Kodak at the time toward an airline career, but he dropped his work and flew 13 hours in Lake Placid that first day. His dad lived three more years after that, but Short never

left Lake Placid or the Adirondack Flying Service. “I took a leave of absence from Kodak,” Short said. “I’m still on a leave of absence.” Short grew up around planes. He was raised in Marion, New York, by a father who had a bug for flying. His father bought his first plane when Short was a year old. He became wellrespected at his local airport, flying around 400 hours a year — hours airline pilots usually log — just for fun. Short’s family spent a few weeks on Lake Eaton near Long Lake every year, and on visits, Short’s dad would stop by the Long Lake seaplane base and the airport at Tupper Lake. Eventually, Short’s father met Al Furnia, a contractor who decided he wanted to run the Lake Placid airport in 1968. Furnia is responsible for the birth of the Adirondack Flying Service, and Short’s father joined Furnia in the business. Then Furnia got cancer. Short’s father took over the business, but it was just a few years later when he suffered his subarachnoid hemorrhage and Short took his place. Short said he’ll probably keep hanging around the airport after he retires, too. He’s 75 now, and he said it’s uncertain whether he’ll be able to keep flying commercial Part 135 flights or if he’ll be limited to just scenic Part 91 flights and aerial surveys. For now, he’s chartering flights when he can and preparing to get started on that bucket list.

FINANCE

Fixing Your Credit Your credit score plays a determining role in how much you’ll pay for a home over the lifetime of your mortgage.

ADOBESTOCK®

A better score means lower interest rates, and that saved income stays in your bank account. That’s why it may be smart to fix your credit before beginning your new home search. Here’s a step-by-step guide. CHECK YOUR REPORT Begin by finding out how you’re doing through the three main reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Each of them will issue one free report per year, after a written request. Some banks and credit-card companies will also offer more regular access to your scores. Pay close attention to your number, since these are the same credit bureaus that lenders will be contacting. You’ll earn more attractive loan options with better

scores, including an opportunity to make a lower down payment. You’ll potentially get a more favorable interest rate, too. RAISE YOUR SCORE If you find that you can’t secure the best loan because of a lower score, don’t worry: There are options to raise it before you purchase a property. Consider opening a low-interest credit card account, which you can use to charge select essentials. It’s important, however, that you pay off the card on time, every month, for your score will improve. If you let a balance carry forward — or worse, miss a payment — your numbers could be negatively impacted. Disciplined charging and regular payments can lead directly to better

mortgage options. Just make sure the card is reporting your activity to the three main credit agencies. PRE-QUALIFICATION If you’re worried about living within your means, avoid creating a mountain of debt — or halting the sale process entirely — by pre-qualifying for a loan. You’ll understand in advance which home fits your specific budget. This document from your loan officer actually does more than outline the limit of your loan; it also helps you buy with confidence because you have a better sense of what your payment structure and interest rate will be. A pre-qualification letter aids in negotiations with a seller too, since they know you’re in a healthy position to buy.
