Continue toward Olmsteadville and locate O’Neill Road on the right and follow this to the end and take a left at the stop sign onto CR24A. Follow

this straight to the stop sign and go straight through this stop sign to Route 28N in Minerva. Cross Route 28N onto 14th Road and follow to the end. ‘Everyone I know is helping’

North Country native makes a difference for Ukrainian refugees in Poland

hen Rebecca Pohl goes shopping, she fills her car up to the brim. When she goes to the train station, she brings burn kits and heart monitors. When she goes home, there’s a kind Ukrainian woman sleeping in her bed. Pohl, a native of Raquette Lake, is one of thousands of people living in Poland who are putting their normal lives on hold to support the millions of Ukrainian refugees entering their country, fleeing the Russian invasion. Pohl is a high school counselor with the American School of Warsaw. When Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in late February, Pohl was living only a couple hundred miles away. Then, when refugees began coming to Warsaw by train in droves, she started filling a car with food, linking up with other volunteers and going to meet them. “Everyone I know is helping in some way,” Pohl said. For the past month, she’s been turning thousands of dollars in donations — many from North Country residents — into tangible results, improving the lives of Ukrainian refugees starting a new life in a new country. She said the donations go directly to help Ukrainians — there’s no overhead or administrative costs. “The ASW Foundation has no administrative costs because it’s all volunteer, and ASW (the school) covers what costs there are,” Pohl wrote in a message. “The donations all come in to our school building and get sorted there, so the ASW Foundation doesn’t have rent or utilities to pay.” She’s working directly with some of the first people refugees meet when they arrive in Poland, so she knows what they need. And with a massive network of family and friends back here in the U.S., she has the money to buy it. The ASW has raised $100,000 as an organization since the invasion began. winery, Rasta Ranch Vineyards, involved, too. Pohl took in refugees immediately. She moved out of her bedroom — letting the refugees sleep in her bed — and onto a pull-out couch in her second room. On March 7, her first two guests arrived — a mother and an 11-year-old daughter. Then, a mother with a 25-year-old daughter stayed for a week before the daughter left for Germany, seeking a job and an apartment with a friend, another refugee from Ukraine. The two had been displaced from their home in Donetsk eight years ago during a war in which Russian-backed separatists declared that region of Ukraine to be independent. They were displaced again when the Russian military invaded their new home in Kyiv this year. The mother, Natasha, stayed with Pohl and is still living with her. Local fishing guide featured in AuSable Forks art show

mong the paints and brushes in Rachel Finn’s art studio in Wilmington are boxes of old fly fishing lines and feathers. Finn is a seasoned artist and fly fishing guide, and those two worlds visibly overlap. Finn, 60, learned how to fly fish from her late husband, Jeff Kirschman, a longtime fly fishing guide at the Hungry Trout Resort and ski patrolman at Whiteface Mountain. Kirschman fished his whole life, and he shared his love of fly fishing with Finn. “He created a monster,” she said. The couple guided together for years at the Hungry Trout, where Finn still guides, and they spent 10 summers guiding in Alaska. Finn, who grew up in Massachusetts, met Kirschman when she was in art school at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. Finn moved on to get a graduate degree in art from the Yale School of Art, and she said the natural next step for most students leaving the program was to pursue an art career in New York City. But while Finn moved to the city, Kirschman made his way to Lake Placid. “He was not a city boy,” Finn said. It turns out Finn wasn’t much for the city, either. She lived in the city off and on for 10 years while Kirschman tended bar at Jimmy’s 21. Eventually, she joined him in Lake Placid before they made their way to Wilmington and the Hungry Trout. Now, Finn is in her 30th year of being a fly

fishing guide. Finn is now part of an art show at the Tahawus Cultural Center in AuSable Forks, and most of the work she wants to show is under the theme “It’s all home water.” She’s a Patagonia affiliate, and the phrase is a slogan used by the brand to raise awareness about the importance of improving water quality around the globe. A Patagonia decal in the shape of a fish has recently become what Finn calls her “entrance way” into her art. She’s been tracing, stamping, stenciling and otherwise using the decal as the basis for many of her pieces. Finn considers herself an abstract artist, and she likes to insert abstract elements into the fish shape. Finn’s organic and physical way of making art comes through in her finished pieces, and it’s not just the fish that evokes the natural elements of her work. A close look at one of her paintings could reveal a pattern that’s like a ripple in water, or a texture like sand or stone. That’s no accident. Finn said she knows the effects certain artistic techniques will produce, and she’s often inspired by what she sees while she’s out fishing. Finn’s artwork is on display at the Tahawus Cultural Center from May 14 to June 26 as part of the “Wild at Heart” multi-media art show, along with art by Alison Haas and Susan Burdick Young. People can see Finn’s art by appointment or during the gallery’s open hours every Saturday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

From the outside looking in, a foreclosure sale might seem like the easiest route to take. After all, banks looking to get rid of a bad debt are more apt to make a deal, and the property is already empty so setting a movein date should be no problem. Here’s a look at how you can best take advantage of this tricky real-estate opportunity. START SMALLER It’s tempting, of course, to purchase more expensive foreclosures, in particular if you’re considering a remodel and quick resale. But these high-risk deals can leave buyers stranded with unwanted property if the resale

market is sluggish for larger homes. Instead, considering opting for a smaller, cheaper home — and plan to stay put for a couple of years. That gives you time to spruce up the place, then get a safer return on your investment. In time, you can work up to larger properties in more desirable neighborhoods, and there’s a lot less risk along the way. BE REALISTIC Whatever size foreclosure you make an offer on, be realistic about the process. The price is often much more affordable, but you may not find your dream home right away since the market is limited to those who have defaulted on their mortgage. At the same time, investors should know that quick-turnaround sales aren’t a sure thing, in particular when the economy is in flux. Be prepared to pay costs to renovate the home, but

also property taxes if you’re there longer than expected — and perhaps continuing real-estate service charges, as well. ASK THE EXPERTS The safest foreclosure investment is using the home as your primary residence, which allows you to more deliberately build equity through remodeling and debt servicing. The properties can then be sold when the time is right, without the pressure associated with flipping a house.
