Turning Jack-o’-laterns into compost

B

By Aaron Cerbone

ill Domenico added another pumpkin to his van of gourds on Saturday, Nov. 6. He was at St. Bernard’s School collecting the retired pumpkins for composting, to keep them out of the landfill. Over the next few weeks, these autumnal decorations will decompose in a pile at Domenico and Carter Rowley’s Blue Line Compost business. The pumpkins were in varied states of decay, but some of their carved faces still smiled out of the back of the van. Domenico stuffed them full of leaves to aid in the decomposition. He said there’s a “recipe” they use to create the best compost. They just finished their second batch in September and sold it all — some to local farms, some in single bags. They’ve collected around 2,500 pounds of food waste a week since they started the company a year-and-a-half ago, Domenico said. “Every month, our volumes are increasing,” he said. He has a degree in Agronomy from Delaware Valley University and studied at Paul Smith’s College, too. “My formal education is in soil science, so it’s good to actually be able to use my degree,” Domenico said. He said he hopes to grow the business so in a few years it can become his full-time job. In January, New York’s Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling law will take effect, requiring any entity creating more than 2 tons of waste a week to donate or recycle all the scraps. Domenico said this will include grocery stores, hospitals, prisons, colleges and state Olympic Regional Development Authority facilities. He said the law also makes food donation easier, relaxes laws on how grocery stores can donate excess, but still edible, food, to limit their liability. Domenico hopes to collaborate with Saranac Lake Interfaith Food Pantry to collect groceries for those in need.

‘I live it every day’ Local veteran recalls military bomb squad service By Aaron Cerbone

Dane DeGrace remembers his service in Afghanistan as an explosive ordnance disposal technician with the Army as he looks at a framed display in his office in Saranac Lake. The display includes the Purple Heart ribbon he earned on the day he was caught in an explosion.

LIVING IN THE ADIRONDACKS

T

here’s a framed collection of photos, medals and ribbons Dane DeGrace hangs on the wall of his office at North Country Home Services — memories of his time in Afghanistan with the Army’s bomb squad, reminders of the “brothers for life” who died over there, and a Purple Heart ribbon. For those lucky enough to return from military service, many carry the scars, mental and physical, of war. “I live it every day ... every day,” DeGrace said. DeGrace grew up in Saranac Lake. A few years after graduating, he was looking for direction in life and saw a cousin from Tupper Lake enlisted in the Army. “I wanted to find something meaningful,” he said. He enlisted in 2010 and chose to become an explosive ordnance disposal technician. EOD’s, as they’re called, are the Army’s bomb squad. Their job is to disarm or safely detonate improvised explosive devices. “I knew when I joined the Army that I wanted to do something positive,” DeGrace said. “I wanted to do something helpful.” He said when he joined, the battle was less about firefights and more about protecting soldiers and Afghan civilians from the Taliban’s IEDs. DeGrace was seven months into a nine-month deployment when he was caught in an IED explosion. It was May 14, 2013. DeGrace’s squad got a call that soldiers on patrol had been injured by an IED explosion. This was the first time he had encountered an IED that injured a fellow soldier, he said. “It was time to go to work,” he said.

When they arrived, three soldiers were dead and several were injured. There were explosives buried all over. Using a metal detector to find safe passage, DeGrace walked into the unknown. A medic behind him, Sgt. Adam Hartswick, unknowingly stepped outside of the two-foot path DeGrace was paving, triggering an explosion. Hartswick, now a double-amputee, gave others instructions on how to tie off tourniquets on his legs. “He saved his own life,” DeGrace said. Moments later, a Black Hawk helicopter landed, and 8 minutes after that, they were back in safety at a base. Four soldiers were dead, 16 suffered long-term physical injuries and many more had lasting traumatic brain injuries or hearing loss. DeGrace was wounded badly. His left side was hit by the explosion and shrapnel. In his office, he rolled up his sleeve to show the scars up and down his arm. He’s lucky to have his arm, he said. Beneath his physical scars, DeGrace still carries shrapnel from that day. There’s a rock lodged in a finger on his left hand that he said needs to be removed. “Eight years later, I still have rocks falling out of me,” he said. DeGrace medically retired from the Army in July 2015. He and his wife Brittany moved back to Saranac Lake to be close to family and he attended North Country Community College and Paul Smith’s College. DeGrace is now a fiscal and business assistant for North Country Home Services. He said he wanted to do something “meaningful” in his civilian life, too.

There are many circumstances that can complicate the process, including opening and closing of utility accounts, coordination of moving trucks and making sure insurance is active when you move in. To complicate things, you will likely be forced to get all of these logistics ironed out on an accelerated timeframe, as most home closes are done within 30 to 45 days. PROPER PREPARATION The first step to making sure you’ll be ready come moving day is to simply take stock of your belongings. Grab a notebook or a laptop and build your own personal inventory of furniture, appliances, pictures, toys and other belongings.

If you plan to contract with a moving company, they will likely need to know how many rooms you plan to move and an estimated number of pieces of furniture and appliances. Use your inventory to help answer any questions related to the logistics of your move. PLAN YOUR MOVE Will you use a moving company to get your belongings to your new home? Or will friends and family help you? A moving company is likely busy with other clients, so be sure to get on their list for your target moving date as soon as possible. Your friends and family may be the less expensive option, but it may take more coordination on your part to

make sure they know where and when to show up and what to do. Take these factors into consideration when building your plan for your big move. PACKING AND DONATING Whether you plan to move into your home yourself or hire a moving company to help, it’s important that you start collecting boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape to be as ready as possible for the move. You can also schedule a donation pickup or list belongings for sale online or in the newspaper if you’re looking to lighten your move. The more non-essential items you can eliminate from your move, the easier it will be on you in the end.
