Saranac Lake couple’s ever-moving metal pets grabbing public’s attention

Standing in their yard on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, June 20, Keith and Marge Murphy couldn’t believe how much attention their lawn was getting.

No, it isn’t the grass or the flowers catching the attention of residents. It’s a set of metal lawn ornaments -- three goats and one chicken -- that the Lake Flower Avenue couple have made popular by moving around and dressing up in the front yard of their home.

The original goat, Greta, who’s the larger white-painted mother of the lawn decor family, came to the Murphys well before they moved from North Carolina to Saranac Lake several years ago.

Greta found her way to the couple via a Florida yard sale six years ago. After spending a few days finishing off the camping trip with them, Greta went to live at their North Carolina home. They moved from Charles Street in Saranac Lake to Lake Flower Avenue in December.

Marge describes the attraction to Greta as almost immediate.

Gus was the second goat to join the herd and came around just a year ago. He was also picked up at a lawn sale -- this time in Lake Clear. Gus stands out for his rusty color and the chain necklace he often sports.

This is also when the Murphys began to

move their two wards around.

“It started with Gus on top of the tree stump, partially to keep him away from the snowplows,” Keith quipped.

The third and final goat is baby Gilbert.

“I saw him on eBay, he’s sort of an anniversary present,” Marge said. She and Keith celebrated 38 years together this spring. They got married in 1985.

It was when they had Gilbert in tow that the Murphys became aware of their new fame. Marge remembers seeing a Facebook post about her goats.

“It said something like ‘Oh my God, the goats have a baby’... and everyone seemed to know what she was talking about!” she said.

After that, the Murphys started to arrange more complex scenes on their lawn. The goats climbing a telephone pole; Gilbert riding Greta; all three goats in a kayak; all three sheltering on a now-overturned kayak.

They also added a chicken to the mix, as

well. The chicken arrived on the Murphys’ porch, seemingly dropped off by a passerby. Marge took to Facebook to try to discover who exactly left the decoration and return the chicken to its home, “but no one would admit they dropped it off,” Marge said. She added that other people have offered her more animals, but she keeps declining them.

A few days later, after polling other residents on Facebook, the chicken was named “Henrietta” and added to the pack.

The Murphys say that they have plenty of ideas for new setups at the moment.

“I wake up a 4 a.m. thinking about goats now!” Keith said.

Currently, each scene lasts about three days; however, going forward, the Murphys plan to shy away from elaborate plays and toward a more “Where’s Waldo” experience. They say that they want to avoid becoming “tacky.”

Keith and Marge Murphy’s Lake Flower Goat House can be found on Lake Flower Avenue, near Fogarty’s Marina in Saranac Lake.

Keith and Marge Murphy’s lawn ornaments — three goats and a chicken — are seen on the front lawn of their Lake Flower Avenue home in Saranac Lake on June 21.

ADIRONDACK LIVING REAL ESTATE GUIDE • AUGUST 2023 - 23
Brian and Karen Delaney pose outside their business, High Peaks Cyclery, on Main Street, Lake Placid, on June 9. (Staff photo — Andy Flynn)

Delaneys celebrate 40 years at High Peaks Cyclery

Forty-three years ago, High Peaks Cyclery co-owner Brian Delaney was riding up a ski lift at Whiteface when he suddenly spotted Karen Heinlen.

“Who is she?” he asked his friends. “She is pretty.”

They soon met and fell in love, and last year, they celebrated 40 years of marriage.

Since 1982, Brian and Karen have had many adventures in Lake Placid, not just running a business. They also became Adirondack 46ers together.

“It took us about 30 years to finish those mountains, between having four kids and starting the business,” Karen told the Lake Placid News in 2015.

This year, the Delaneys are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their family business, High Peaks Cyclery, located at 2733 Main St., Lake Placid.

Brian grew up in rural New Jersey, and Karen grew up in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. Both were living in Lake Placid in the early 1980s when they met.

After their marriage in 1982, Brian and Karen moved to a small ski area outside of Syracuse, called the Toggenburg Mountain Ski Center. There, Brian became a manager and Karen worked in a ski shop. In 1983, the couple opened High Peaks Cyclery, an outdoor shop, in the round building on Saranac Avenue.

“We wanted to meet needs within the community and knowing that we wanted to help people with products and services that were needed at that time,” Brian said, adding that there weren’t many outdoor stores in Lake

Placid at the time.

“Originally, we opened as a bicycle touring business,” Brian said. “In the 1980s, business was brisk because it was the end of the recession and people wanted to buy bikes, so we started selling more bikes and booking less tours.”

Later on in the winter, the store opened as a cross-country ski shop.

“Then we did bikes and cross-country skis and outdoor gear,” Brian said.

High Peaks Cyclery moved to its current location in 1992.

Brian and Karen -- both 67 years old -- won’t be running the store forever. Instead, one of their sons, Matt Delaney, will be taking over. Brian has already been training and teaching Matt how to run the store.

Yet, it’s clear that Brian will not being retiring for a long time.

“All my friends that have retired are all working somewhere because they’re bored or they’re in rehab ... or they’re injured because they’re overdoing it,” Brian said. “I like working here and helping. It’s fun. ... We’ll slow down. Karen and I will do more adventuring and more traveling, and we love guiding.”

The Delaneys are very involved in the community and are always organizing and volunteering for many things -- including the summertime mini-triathlon series at Mirror Lake, which begins on Monday, June 26 and runs until Aug. 14. This past winter, they set up the Scotts Cobble Nordic Ski Center at the Craig Wood Golf Course.

Buying a Foreclosure

Strictly from a cost standpoint, foreclosures make all the sense in the world. These properties have been repossessed after nonpayment, just as a vehicle would be. The loan holder takes back the property when an owner fails to pay their note on time. The asset is then put back on the market, typically at a much lower price.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Laws governing foreclosures vary widely depending on which state you live in, so do your research beforehand. In some cases, the process of buying a foreclosure can take months, or even years. There may also be additional hoops to jump through when it comes to financing, depending on your bank or lender. Once you’ve settled all of these issues, then it’s time to begin digging more deeply into available foreclosures.

TYPES OF FORECLOSURES

There are two kinds of foreclosed homes, bankowned and real-estate owned. Understanding the differences can improve your position at the negotiating table. Banks usually put a home up for auction after finalizing a foreclosure in an attempt to recover financial losses. Potential buyers make bids, and the home is only listed traditionally if the home fails to sell during the auction. That’s when the property becomes a real-estate-owned foreclosure. A special agent will show the property, with the potential for an even better deal since the sale is taking so long.

UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS

The price might be right, but there are still unique risks associated with foreclosed properties. They’ve typically been vacant for a lengthy period of time as the auction

process unfolded. Vacant homes are subject to the development of mold, mildew or other issues relating to the lack of maintenance. They may also attract vandals, the unhoused or thieves, any one of whom can leave behind a damaged property.

Always hire an inspector to check out a foreclosure before agreeing to buy, then bid out any repair work to local contractors to see if it’s worth the hassle. If nothing else, this information can become part of your negotiating argument to get the lowest possible price. In some cases, property owners may have the right to buy back their foreclosed home within a certain time frame. Make sure that period has passed before signing on the dotted line.
