inter in the Adirondack Park is about celebrating our communities and enjoying the natural beauty while embracing what Mother Nature gives us. Go out and explore all the wonders of New York’s 6-million-acre park — nature-made or man-made — and enjoy yourselves in this magical place.

Since the early 1900s, our communities have hosted international sporting events — from speedskating on frozen lakes to two Olympic Winter Games, Winter World University Games in 1972 and 2023, the only Winter Goodwill Games in 2000 and countless World Cup events.

Yet, for the average person, this winter playground offers a lot more.

Visitors have a variety of activities to fill their weekend or weeklong trip: downhill or cross-country skiing, snowboarding, skating, ice climbing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, tobogganing, ice fishing, sleigh riding, dog sledding, etc.

Residents make outdoor fun part of their everyday lives. They take advantage of fresh snow and take a day off from work to ski or snowboard. They spend weekends ice fishing in their shacks, or they visit a cross-country ski trail as part of their morning ritual.

Playing in the High Peaks Winter tourists started visiting Lake Placid more than a century ago, beginning with the Lake Placid Club in 1904. Since then, this resort has grown into an international mecca for sporting enthusiasts and world-class competitors.

Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games, and the state Olympic Regional Development Authority (https:// lakeplacidolympicsites.com) operates those venues, including the

Olympic Sports Complex, Olympic Jumping Complex, Olympic Speedskating Oval, Olympic Center rinks and Whiteface Mountain Ski Center.

The 400-meter oval is where Eric Heiden won five gold medals in 1980 and local legend Jack Shea won two gold medals in 1932.

At the Lake Placid Olympic Museum (www.lpom.org), visitors can learn about the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics on the first floor of the Miracle Plaza building, which connects the 1932 and 1980 arenas.

The Olympic Sports Complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg is home of the biathlon stadium, cross-country skiing trails and combined sliding track for bobsled, luge and skeleton. There is also a start training facility for bobsled and skeleton at the Mountain Pass Lodge.

Lake Placid also keeps its Olympic heritage alive with offices for two national governing bodies — USA Luge and USA Bobsled and Skeleton — and as a training ground for U.S. Biathlon, Nordic

Loon rescued in snowy Lake Placid

SARANAC LAKE — A juvenile loon named “Spunky SnowWing” hooted from the back of a van parked in a Main Street lot in downtown Saranac Lake on Jan. 10, 2025, as a quartet of Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation staff held, measured and banded the bird.

The young loon was rescued from neck-deep snow on the ground in Lake Placid and released onto the open waters of Lake Champlain in Westport.

The loon was discovered the morning of Jan. 10 on the road to the Peninsula Trails in Lake Placid by snowplow drivers.

ACLC Conservation and Science Director Nina Schoch was doing chores and getting ready to go into the office when plowman Fred Ryman called her. He had been plowing snow on the road along with Matt Colby when they found the loon wailing in the road.

By the time Schoch arrived, the loon had wing-rowed down the road, trying to walk in the deep snow by pushing off its wings, leaving unique prints in the powder.

Loons cannot take off on land. They can only get airborne from the water. Loons’ legs are further back on their bodies than other waterfowl, making them great swimmers, but requiring a long, watery runway to take off. While they are grounded, they are easy prey for aerial and ground predators.

The loon made its way into a yard and was neck-deep in snow powder.

Schoch hatched a plan. She gave Ryman a net and had him go around the bird to block it from going further towards the woods.

She hoped Ryman would distract the loon so she could sneak up behind it and toss a towel over it from the back to catch it. The loon was not injured, but it didn’t get put in custody without a fight.

“The bird had other plans though,” Schoch wrote in an email. “It figured out very quickly that there was a second person behind it, and it whipped around and came wing-rowing right at me, ready to attack!”

She was able to toss the towel over its head and secure it. The loon was placed in a special net-bottom bin designed to protect loons from injuring their keels during transport.

ACLC volunteer field staff Ellie George named the juvenile “Spunky Snow-Wing” for its wing-rowing trek and its feisty behavior.

It also bit ACLC Biologist Griffin Archambault on the forearm as he released it into the water.

“That bird had a lot of spunk!” Schoch said.

Archambault said they are not sure where the loon came from.

There’s not much open water left at this point in the winter. He guessed it either was living on a river with flowing water or came

Avalanche danger in the High Peaks Every winter, the state Department of Environmental Conservation advises backcountry downhill skiers, snowboarders and others who may traverse slides or steep, open terrain in the High Peaks that they should be prepared for avalanche conditions.

Avalanche danger increases during and immediately after major snowfalls and during thaws. Due to high winds, snow depths are deeper on leeward slopes or areas of snow deposits, such as gullies.

As snow accumulates, over time it develops distinct layers formed by rain and melt-freeze cycles. When new snow falls onto previous snowpack, it adds weight and downward pressure. Lower snow layers may be reactive to the added stresses of recent snows, creating conditions conducive to avalanches.

Avalanches can occur in any situation where snow, slope and weather conditions combine to create the proper conditions. While the majority of steep, open terrain is found in the High Peaks, avalanche-prone terrain is found on mountains throughout the Adirondacks, including Snowy Mountain in Hamilton County.

DEC offers these tips to stay safe: ¯ Cross-country skiers and snowshoers should stay on trails and away from steep slopes on summits. ¯ Know the terrain, weather and snow conditions. ¯ Dig multiple snow pits to conduct stability tests. Do not rely on other people’s data. ¯ Practice safe route finding and safe travel techniques. ¯ Never ski, board or climb with someone above or below you — only one person on the slope at a time. ¯ Ski and ride near trees, not in the center of slides or other open areas. ¯ Carry a shovel, probes, and transceiver with fresh batteries. ¯ Ensure group members know avalanche rescue techniques. ¯ Never travel alone. ¯ Always inform someone about where you are going.

Try some hiking challenges The Adirondack Park is full of challenges for hiking and paddling. If hiking all the 46 High Peaks (adk46er.org) to become a 46er is too ambitious, try the hiking challenges that feature some of the lower peaks in Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.

Tupper Lake Hiking Triad There are two patches for the Tupper Lake Triad hiking challenge: Summer (between March 21 and Dec. 19) and Winter (between Dec. 20 and March 20).

For more information, including registration for the challenge, visit www.tupperlaketriad.com. ¯ Mount Arab: 2 miles round-trip, 2,545 feet elevation. Trailhead: From the intersection of state routes 3 and 30 in the village of Tupper Lake, follow Route 3 toward Piercefield. In about 7.25 miles, turn left on Conifer Road and follow it for almost 2 miles to Mount Arab Road, on the left. Drive about 1 mile. The trailhead is on the left; parking is on the right. There is a fire tower on the peak of Mount Arab. ¯ Coney Mountain: 2.2 miles round-trip, 2,280 feet elevation.

Trailhead: From the intersection of state routes 3 and 30 in the village of Tupper Lake, follow Route 30 toward Long Lake. Drive just under 12 miles to trailhead on the left. A state DEC sign marks the location. ¯ Goodman Mountain: 3.4 miles round-trip, 2,178 feet elevation. Trailhead: From the intersection of state routes 3 and 30 in the village of Tupper Lake, follow Route 30 toward Long Lake. Drive just under 10 miles to Lumberjack Spring on the left. Lumberjack Spring is not marked, but a trailhead post is located there.

Saranac Lake 6er hiking challenge There are four patches for the Saranac Lake 6er hiking challenge: Summer, Winter, Ultra Summer and Ultra Winter.

Ultra hikers leave from Berkeley Green — corner of Main

Street and Broadway — in downtown Saranac Lake, complete all six mountains in 24 hours and finish at Berkeley Green, where they can ring the bell in the pavilion. Winter hikes are completed between Dec. 21 and March 21. All hikes must have been completed after May 25, 2013.

Hikers who finish the six peaks have the privilege of ringing the bell at Berkeley Green.

For more information, including registration for the challenge, visit www.saranaclake.com/saranac-lake-6er. ¯ Baker Mountain: 1.8 miles round-trip (from the trailhead), 2,457 feet elevation. Beginning in 2022, no longer will starting at the Baker Mountain trailhead count for the 6er program. Now, to earn a 6er patch, one must start and end their Baker Mountain summit (on foot) from the 6er bell at Berkeley Green. Trailhead: From Berkeley Green, head east on Main Street. Take a right on Pine Street and a left on Forest Hill Avenue. Follow it clockwise, as it wraps around Moody Pond. The trailhead is on the left about half a mile. ¯ St. Regis Mountain: 6.6 miles round-trip, 2,874 feet elevation. Trailhead: From downtown Saranac Lake head west on state Route 86, toward Paul Smiths. At Paul Smith’s College, turn right on state Route 30, take the first left on Keese Mills Road. Follow the road for almost 3 miles to the trailhead parking on the left. ¯ Haystack Mountain: 6.6 miles round-trip, 2,874 feet elevation. Trailhead: From downtown Saranac Lake, take state Route 86 east toward Lake Placid. Continue for about 5 miles and look for the large parking area on the left. This is also the parking area for McKenzie Mountain. ¯ Scarface Mountain: 7.6 miles round-trip, 3,058 feet elevation. In September 2025, the state Department of Environmental Conservatoin reported that the Scarface Mountain Trail had reopened, as the bridge over Ray Brook had been replaced.

The parking area is on the right after about 8 miles. The trailhead is across the road on the left. ¯ McKenzie Mountain: 10.6 miles round-trip, 3,861 feet elevation. Trailhead: From downtown Saranac Lake, take state Route 86 east toward Lake Placid. Continue for about 5 miles and look for the large parking area on the left. This is also the parking area for Haystack Mountain.

The trailhead is on Mirror Lake Drive next to the entrance of Northwood School. There is no parking lot there, so hikers must park in the village and walk to the trailhead. ¯ Mount Jo, Lake Placid: 2.6 miles round-trip, 2,876 feet elevation. Trailhead: From Lake Placid, go east on state Route 73 to Adirondack Loj Road. Parking lot is at High Peaks Information Center. There is a parking fee. ¯ Baxter Mountain, Keene: 2.4 miles round-trip, 2,440 feet elevation. Trailhead: From Lake Placid, take state Route 73 west past Keene. Take left on Route 9N toward Elizabethtown. Continue about 2 miles to the top of hill. Trailhead is on the right. ¯ Mount Van Hoevenberg, Lake Placid: 4.4 miles roundtrip, 2,940 feet elevation. Trailhead: From Lake Placid, take state Route 73 east to Adirondack Loj Road. After 4 miles, take left on Meadow Lane. Trailhead is 0.25 miles on left. The Mount Van Hoevenberg “East Trail” begins at the Olympic Sports Complex off state Route 73. ¯ Big Crow Mountain, Keene: 1.4 miles round-trip, 2,815 feet elevation. Trailhead: From Lake Placid, take state Route 73 east.

At 200 yards past the intersection with Route 9N in Keene, turn left on Hurricane Road at Keene Town Hall. At just over 2 miles, bear left on O’Toole Lane for 1.2 miles to end at Crow Clearing.

Trail is on left. ¯ Bear Den Mountain, Wilmington: 4.5 miles round-trip, 2,650 feet elevation. Trailhead: From Lake Placid, follow state Route 86 to Whiteface Mountain Ski Center. Turn left into center.

Follow road around to the right and the Bear Den Lot. ¯ Pitchoff Mountain, Lake Placid: 5.2 miles round-trip, 3,500 feet elevation. Trailhead: From Lake Placid, take state Route 73 to the Pitchoff West Trail, 7.5 miles. Pitchoff East Trail is 2.7 miles farther on Route 73. Trailhead is on left, parking on right. ¯ Catamount Mountain, Wilmington: 3.6 miles round-trip, 3,169 feet elevation. Trailhead: From Wilmington, take Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway. Just before the toll house, bear right toward Franklin Falls. Continue 3.3 miles to Roseman Road. Take a right. Follow Roseman Road for 0.8 mile. Turn right on Plank Road. Follow 2.2 miles to parking area on left. ¯ Hurricane Mountain, Keene: 6.8 miles round-trip, 3,678 feet elevation. Trailhead: From Lake Placid, take state Route 73 past Keene. Turn left on Route 9N after 15.5 miles. Parking area is 3.5 miles on right. Trailhead is on left.

ADK Fire Tower Challenge Here’s a hiking challenge that combines history with outdoor recreation: the Adirondack Mountain Club’s Fire Tower Challenge, a program of ADK’s Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter.

There’s also a Winter Fire Tower Challenge (between Dec. 21 and March 21).

People completing the challenge do not have to be ADK members.

To complete the challenge and receive the official full-color patch, hikers must climb and document, by date, ascents of at least 23 fire tower summits: 18 of the Adirondack Park summits and all five Catskill Park summits. Climbing each tower itself is not required, and it is not recommended for those towers that have not been restored for safe public use.

Playing in the Champlain Valley Lake Champlain — briefly declared the sixth Great Lake in 1998 — offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the North Country. It’s called the Adirondack Coast.

Bordering New York on the west coast, Vermont on the east coast, and the Canadian province of Quebec on the north, the lake takes up a lot of geography on the map. Lake Champlain ferries (ferries.com) are used to cross at places such as Essex, Plattsburgh and Port Kent (summer only). Motorists can also use two bridges

The history of the Champlain Valley dates back to the Native American tribes, Iroquois to the west and Abenaki to the east.

When Europeans arrived, they fought over the land, and armies traveled the length of the lake to fight each other during the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Forts in Crown Point and Ticonderoga help tell that history.

The lake played a large role during the Industrial Revolution, especially with the iron mines around Port Henry. Villages up and down the lake became ports to transport goods and raw materials.

Some of this history can be found at the Iron Center Museum in Port Henry.

There’s a sign in Port Henry that documents some of the many sightings of the Lake Champlain monster called Champ.

Food and drink are celebrated up and down the lake at farmers markets, farm stands, orchards, wineries, craft breweries, cheese makers and unique farm-to-table experiences.

Outdoor recreation is abundant.

In the winter, there’s ice fishing, cross-country skiing, hiking, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. World-class downhill skiing can be found at the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center in Wilmington (whiteface.com).

Plus, there are year-round adventures at Ausable Chasm in Keeseville (www.ausablechasm.com) and High Falls Gorge in Wilmington (highfallsgorge.com).

Safety and preparedness are extremely important no matter your physical ability or destination. Properly preparing for winter conditions is essential for a more enjoyable and safer experience.

Plan ahead ¯ Learn about the area you’ll be visiting ahead of time; know the opportunities and the regulations. Check maps, guidebooks and websites. ¯ Arrange to go with a group or at least one other person. ¯ Know your skill level and physical capabilities-choose trails within your or your group’s ability. Remember it takes more effort and energy to move through snow. ¯ Days are short — know what time the sun sets and plan your hike so you can return before dark. ¯ Inform someone of your travel plans-let them know where you are going, your planned route, when you plan to return, and emergency numbers to call if you do not return at the scheduled time. ¯ Program cellphones with the DEC Dispatch phone numbers, but do not rely on cell service in all areas. Adirondacks: 833-6977264. ¯ Check the weather forecast, but keep in mind that temperatures will be lower, winds stronger, and snow deeper on mountain summits. Playing on the Adirondack Rail Trail

This 34-mile multi-use trail is now complete The 34-mile Adirondack Rail Trail stretches from Lake Placid to Tupper Lake. Parking lot amenities in Lake Placid on Station Street will eventually be built, and the train stations in Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake have seen upgrades.

The first phase of the Adirondack Rail Trail — 10 miles from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake — opened on Dec. 1, 2023; the second phase — 15 miles from Saranac Lake to Floodwood Road — opened on Aug. 26, 2024; and the third phase — 9 miles from Floodwood Road to Tupper Lake — opened on Oct. 4, 2025. They are now available for outdoor recreationists.

Warm-weather activities on the rail trail include bicycling and walking, and winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Motorized vehicles are not allowed, except for snowmobiles and class one E-bikes.

Tupper Lake is the western terminus of the Adirondack Rail Trail and the northern terminus of the Adirondack Railroad, which operates tourist trains from Utica to Thendara to Tupper Lake.

Railroad history The New York Central ended its regular passenger train service from Utica to Lake Placid in 1965, and freight service ended in 1972. Passenger trains were temporarily operated during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games and were abandoned in 1981.

The train station in Tupper Lake is located in a section of town called the Junction because it was the junction of the New York Central’s Adirondack Division from Remsen to Malone (continuing to Montreal) and the New York Central’s New York and Ottawa Railway from Tupper Lake to Ottawa.

Continued from Page 24 The Adirondack Division was originally built as the Mohawk and Malone Railway and opened in 1892, and the New York Central soon acquired the line. The tracks from Lake Clear to Malone were abandoned in 1961. The section from Lake Clear Junction to Lake Placid was a spur of the New York Central in 1965, although the section from Saranac Lake to Lake Placid had been part of the Delaware and Hudson Railway, which opened the line from Plattsburgh to Saranac Lake in 1887. The Saranac and Lake Placid Railroad Company opened its passenger service between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid in 1893. In 1903, the rail line from Plattsburgh to Lake Placid was first placed under the operation of the Chateaugay and Lake Placid Railroad Company and later that year transferred

to the Delaware & Hudson. In 1946, the New York Central took over the line.

The New York and Ottawa service from Tupper Lake began in 1890, and the line was abandoned to Helena in 1937.

The Adirondack Scenic Railroad, operated by the Adirondack Railway Preservation Society, offered scenic tourist train rides from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake in the spring, summer and fall months from 2000 to 2016.

Do not use your cell phone as a light source, which will drain the batteries. Use the flashlight you packed instead. ¯ Stay on trails to avoid unseen obstacles covered by snow. ¯ Use snowshoes or skis in deep snow to reduce injuries and ease travel. Their use also prevents “post-holing”-leaving deep footprints in the snow — which makes trails more difficult and

hazardous for others to use.

The use of snowshoes or skis is required in the High Peaks Wilderness when snow depths exceed 8 inches. ¯ When hiking with dogs, keep them to the side of trails to avoid “paw post-holing” as well. ¯ Skiers and snowshoers using designated snowmobile trails should keep to the side and move off the trail to allow safe passage of snowmobiles. Snowmobilers should slow down when passing skiers and snowshoers. ¯ Use caution when on ice over water bodies. Ice that holds snow may not hold the weight of a person. ¯ Check ice thickness before traveling across it. ¯ Avoid ice over running water, and near inlets, outlets, boathouses, and docks (especially those with “bubblers” or other ice prevention devices).

If you get lost ¯ Stop where you are. Keep calm and assess your situation. ¯ Try to determine your location-look for recognizable landmarks and listen for vehicles on nearby roads. ¯ If you are sure you can get yourself out of the woods using a map and compass, do so-otherwise stay put. ¯ If you have cell service, call the DEC Dispatch (833-6977264). The dispatcher will ask questions to collect information needed to help searchers locate you quickly. ¯ If you don’t have cell service, move to a location close by where you are visible to searchers on the ground or in the air. If you have something brightly colored, wear it or place it in a conspicuous location. ¯ If it appears that you will need to spend the night: ¯ Clear an area of snow to build a campfire for heat, light and comfort. A fire will help searchers locate you. ¯ Using snow or items from your pack, build a shelter that will serve as a “cocoon” to keep you warm and sheltered from the weather. You can also use dead branches, conifer boughs and leaf litter to insulate the shelter.

If someone is injured or stricken ... ¯ If there is no cell service, at least one person should remain with the injured person while the others note their location and leave to contact DEC Dispatch. ¯ If there isn’t anyone to stay behind, make sure the injured person has shelter and supplies before leaving to seek help.

The 2026 Tupper Lake BrewSki will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at the James C. Frenette Sr. Recreational Trails. Finding itself at the mercy of Mother Nature, and reliant upon a narrow sliver of sufficient weather conditions that manifest themselves for a fleeting few weeks between winter and spring, maple syrup season offers rich, or perhaps more accurately, sweet rewards for those able to partake in the season.

Fortunately, maple syrup production can be found all around the Adirondack North Country, with the area offering ample opportunities every March to see the annual production process up close.

New York state’s Maple Weekends — promoted by the New York State Maple Producers’ Association — will be held on March 21-22 and March 28-29 in 2026. During those four days, participating maple syrup producers will showcase their processes and offer tours to the public.

In Lake Placid, there are two venues that traditionally take part in Maple Weekends — and they just so happen to be on the same road — the Cornell University Uihlein Maple Research Forest, at 157 Bear Cub Lane, and the Uihlein Foundation’s Heaven Hill Farm, at 302 Bear Cub Lane. Both offer free admission.

On Feb. 18, 2025, I visited Heaven Hill Farm for a sneak peek at maple production for the season. Conditions that day perfectly encapsulated the season. Bright sunshine beamed down on the farm as temperatures lifted into the 40s, following a weekend that had been even warmer. Indeed, much of the snow had melted in the fields around the farmer.

Looking around, however, I was quickly reminded that winter may not yet have played its last card. Towering High Peaks — from Whiteface to Marcy to the MacIntyre Range — were still cased in a shiny crest of snow extending well down from their summits. On a clear day, which I was fortunate to have during my visit, the farm’s scenery is nothing short of stunning, a reason to visit in its own right.

After gazing at the surrounding landscape, I made my way to the farm’s sugarhouse, located on a hill behind the meticulously-maintained farmhouse. There, I met Sarah Manitta, who was in the midst of preparing wood — used to provide heat for boiling sap — and getting the Heaven Hill Farm’s sugarhouse ready for production.

She provided an overview of the various equipment used to turn sap into syrup in the sugarhouse. Intensive is an understatement.

Typically, it requires 40 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup, although the figure can vary based on the sap’s composition.

lessons on how to tap a tree and a screening of video footage from the Paul Smith’s College archives that shows recordings of oldtime maple syrup production in the region.

“That, I think, will be really fun for people to see,” she said.

Manitta also discussed how the 2025 season had played out by that time. Manitta said it has been a slower start to the season than many recently because of the hearty winter locally. In 2024, for example, she said the farm fired up at the end of February.

Manitta said a later start wasn’t necessarily going to lead to a slower season overall. She said what’s more important for the year’s overall production is when it ends, which is generally marked by when nighttime temperatures cease to dip below freezing.

“In the event that things do slowly thaw like they should, we could go for a couple more weeks,” Manitta said.

She added that it’s always tough for producers to know how long their seasons will last. For instance, she said even though maple syrup production started earlier than normal last year — at the end of February — it did not also end earlier than normal. Rather, below-freezing low temperatures persisted, leading to an extended season.

“Very, very yearly dependent,” she said.

In an ideal weather setup, Manitta said consistency is key.

“You really need a slow progression thaw,” she said. “So freezing temperatures at night and then thawing during the day. The sun really helps a lot.”

Other maple producers in the Adirondack Tri-Lakes Region that typically take part in Maple Weekends are The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, Mark Twain Mapleworks in Saranac Lake and the Paul Smith’s College VIC in Paul Smiths.

Anglers in New York state can stay busy all winter by targeting some of their favorite fish species through the ice.

If you’ve never been ice fishing before and would like to test the waters — learn how to ice fish. It’s a safe and fun activity.

Popular species While most freshwater fish can be caught through the ice, only certain species are in season through the winter. Some popular species to target through the ice in New York are yellow perch, northern pike, walleye, lake trout, brown trout, Atlantic landlocked salmon and black crappie.

Ice fishing regulations Ice fishing is permitted on many waters in New York, but not all. View the state’s fishing regulations online at www.dec.ny.gov/ outdoor/31416.html.

Ice shanties Ice shanties must be marked on the outside with the owner’s name and address in letters at least 3 inches high. Shanties must be removed from all waters by March 15 to prevent them from falling through the ice and becoming hazards to navigation.

Baitfish Baitfish are commonly used when ice fishing. Make sure your baitfish are certified disease free when you purchase them. Never dump unused baitfish or water from your bait bucket into a lake or pond. Undesirable aquatic invasive species might be mixed in with your bait or bait water. Ice safety Safe ice should be your number one consideration when ice fishing. A minimum of three to four inches of solid ice is the general rule for safety. Ice thickness, however, is not uniform on any body of water. The guidelines presented here are based on new, clear

ice on non-running waters. Since ice thickness can vary on a lake, check the ice periodically to stay safe.

Ice thickness/permissable load ¯ 2 inches or less — stay off ¯ 4 inches — ice fishing or other activities on foot ¯ 5 inches — snowmobile or ATV ¯ 8-12 inches — car or small pickup ¯ 12-15 inches — medium truck

Note: This guide is based on new, clear ice on non-running waters. Slush ice is about 50% weaker. Clear ice over running water is about 20% weaker. Double the recommendations for white ice.

Many ice anglers do not like to fish on less than 5 inches of ice, and do not like to drive a pick-up truck on less than 15 inches of ice. Use common sense.

Be cautious in areas where “bubblers” are used to protect docks.

They can produce thin, unsafe ice some distance away. Be especially alert in areas near shore, over moving bodies of water, and where streams enter and exit lakes and ponds.

Remember, use the buddy system while ice fishing — it saves lives.

XC skiing in the Adirondacks Whether it’s a Nordic ski center, the Northville-Placid Trail, the Jackrabbit Trail or a backcountry path headed to a frozen pond in the wilderness, there are hundreds of miles of cross-country ski trails in the Adirondack Park. Some are groomed, and some are not.

Continued from Page 8 from far away. He said Spunky is an adolescent, based on the gray edges to its feathers and the youthful sound of its vocalizations.

Schoch brought Spunky back to the ACLC headquarters in Saranac Lake to measure and put identifying bands on its legs.

Banding rescued loons provides them with information about the birds’ migratory patterns, lifespan and survival.

“Many of the loons we band have been re-sighted in their wintering areas along the East Coast (some birds multiple times over multiple years), as well as in their breeding territories in subsequent summers,” Schoch wrote in an email. “It’s so exciting to know that a bird we rescued from such problems as being iced-in, grounded or from fishing line entanglement, has since survived for years and successfully raised chicks.”

ACLC staff did the work in the low temperatures next to Schoch’s van in a municipal parking lot — the old Sears lot in Saranac Lake.

This was the organization’s new executive director, Dorothy Waldt’s, first time holding a loon. She asked questions on how to do it right and whispered “you’re OK” to the squirming adolescent loon while holding it gingerly but firmly. The bird was flopping its legs and wings, trying to free them from Waldt’s grasp and vocalizing softly as Archambault took measurements, blood and feather samples and banded the bird.

Schoch was having a bit of fun. After they placed the loon in Waldt’s hands she said “OK, bye, we’ll see you later” and feigned walking away. At one point, when the loon stopped wiggling, Schoch mentioned that it was behaving and added, “Either that, or you killed it, Dorothy,” Schoch said.

“It’s breathing, Nina,” Waldt responded dryly.

The two already had a rapport as Schoch handed the executive director position off to Waldt.

Waldt said the loon was warm as she held it.

“It’s nice to feel it breathing,” she said.

After she handed the bird back to Archambault she said she was thrilled to have handled a wild loon.

“That was very cool. Wow,” she said.

It was a day of firsts. After Archambault held the loon for a bit, intern Marissa McLean from SUNY Cortland got to hold the bird on her first rescue with the ACLC. The organization had rescued four other iced-in juveniles in the previous few weeks.

“Sometimes, juvenile loons haven’t figured out they need to migrate, and end up staying too long in the Adirondacks,” Schoch said in an email. “Then the winter weather sets in, and they get iced-in or blown down in a storm before they can fly to the coast.”

This puts them in danger of attacks from eagles.

In the third week of December 2024, ACLC staff and rescue volunteers responded to help two juvenile loons iced in on Fourth Lake. They captured one and the other was able to fly out on its own after the temperature warmed. To read more about this rescue go to tinyurl.com/34pmexc5.

Playing in St. Lawrence County With a mix of farmland, rivers, lakes and mountainous terrain, a large chunk of St. Lawrence County is located inside the Adirondack Park, giving this part of northern New York a unique location for outdoor recreationists to play in all seasons.

One can find the typical indoor and outdoor activities in St. Lawrence County — from the Seaway to the River Valley and the Adirondack Foothills — such as waterfall hikes, ice fishing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, mountain biking and birding.

Bordering the St. Lawrence River and Canada to the north, there is a direct connection to even more adventures.

St. Lawrence County currently has more than 700 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, with main corridors connecting the north and southeast corners of the county. Much of the county’s trail system is located between South Colton and Cranberry Lake inside the Adirondack Park, and outside the park, the Massena area is connected to trails in the Brasher State Forest.

Popular species found in St. Lawrence County waters for ice fishing include northern pike, walleye, winter panfish and trout (brown trout, rainbow trout and splake).

The county has a number of indoor and outdoor facilities for ice skating and hockey, many of which offer lessons and rentals. Some of the popular venues are Potsdam’s Pine Street Arena, the Canton Pavilion, Ogdensburg’s Lockwood Arena, the Massena Arena and Outdoor Annex Rink, the Morristown Ice Rink, the Clifton Fine Arena, the Madrid Ice Rink, the Colton Pavilion/Ice Rink at Swift Field and the Parishville Park Rink.

The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce promotes three Great 8 Challenges for outdoor enthusiasts: Riverside Run, Nature Nuts and Waterfall Crawl. In the winter, snowshoeing the eight Waterfall Crawl destinations is a popular activity: Basford Falls, Greenwood Creek State Forest, Harper’s Falls Trail, Hart’s Falls Preserve, Heritage Park Trail/Cascade Falls, Lampson Falls Trail, Rainbow Falls and Sinclair Falls.

The villages of Potsdam and Canton offer cultural resources and shopping as they are home to four colleges: SUNY Potsdam, Clarkson University, SUNY Canton and St. Lawrence University.

Playing in Plattsburgh Up north, the city of Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain is a center for shopping, health care and education, yet it retains its historical and outdoor recreation roots while growing as a cultural center in northern New York.

One can find the typical outdoor activities, such as boating, paddling, sailing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, cycling, camping, fishing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
