With the blessings of our parents and Lord Ganesha, I’m proud to say we’ve managed to grow bigger and better with every issue of Adesiflava over the past two years. It has helped us branch out to new business endeavours: our first restaurant in HK and conducting several public events. In this issue, you’ll find a special article about Ganeshotsav, a popular festival celebrated in India in recognition of Lord Ganesha. It contains a quick look at some of the most popular Ganeshotsav attractions in and around the city of Aamchi Mumbai – check it out in our Festive Mood section.

You’ll also find an article comparing the cost of living in Hong Kong with other major cities across the globe. Since it came about due to a friend’s enquiry on Hong Kong’s cost of living, I’m going to gift this article to her. I used to think that Hong Kong is the most expensive place to live in, but some of the stats we unravelled completely changed my perspective. Don’t miss reading this article at any cost.

In our new section ‘ANALYSIS’ we follow our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and see how he’s diligently shaping a new image of India for foreign eyes. We’re excited about the change he’s working towards and the promise of new India under his unique leadership.

In ‘GIVING TO OTHERS’ section, we tell you about the fascinating story of Poonam Mehta who is shaping the lives of 35 kids from different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. Aunty Poonam is helping the kids to shape-up and grow like superstars and learn some basic and most important things of life. Read all about how Aunty Poonam’s 70th birthday was celebrated by these kids that she’s helping. We salute her efforts!

I wanted to share an incident that recently happened with me and Gaurav. After we finished our meal at the Pizza Hut in Tsim Sha Tsui, we moved out of the outlet and took the elevator going down. To our horror, we found ourselves stuck in the elevator, and no amount of frantic button pressing or shouting would help. After about five minutes, we could hear the security guard saying something that we couldn’t understand (because it was in Chinese). I was losing my breath; Gaurav was also getting very nervous, as we had spent over 10 min. inside the stuck elevator by now. We were completely helpless as phone networks were also weak inside. With considerable effort, we finally managed to call 999 and inform them about our condition. Immediately, the fire department and an ambulance were at the scene under five minutes. In no time we both got pulled out by fire-fighters, and were treated by the standby medicare personnel with some first-aid.

Needless to say I was super impressed with the first responders. With the help of Suraj Samtani we managed to interview HK Fire Services Dept to try and understand how their team maintains their performance and efficiency of over 90% every time.

Did you know that the largest ever festival of Indian culture and heritage was inaugurated and held in Shanghai & Beijing recently? Wow! Great news indeed. Anything that helps our two great nations come closer to understanding each other is welcome, and read all about it our BUZZ section.

Ganpati Bappa Morya!

Ganeshotsav 2014 is probably the largest festival celebrated in the country after Diwali. Here’s how the 11 day long festival is witnessed through the streets of Mumbai, with a look at also some of the most popular Ganeshotsav attractions in maximum city

E

very year, since Lokmanya Tilak gave his clarion call to people to observe and celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi as a festival in 1893, the tradition of Ganeshotsav (Ganesha festival) has been observed in full swing for over 120 years. And it continues to go strong. The Indian state of Maharashtra, home to eight special pilgrimage spots dedicated to the Elephant-headed God Ganesha, is pretty much the epicentre of the 11 day festival that resonates to all parts of India – from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Gandhinagar to Itanagar.

The festival takes place between either August or September every year.

Why? Because according to Hindu mythology, Ganesha is bestowed the honour of being first

among all other gods. First to be worshipped, whenever there’s a special offering for gods, according to customs and traditions. Ganesha is also heralded as the remover of obstacles, and the supreme god of wisdom, among all things, and receiving his blessings before starting any new enterprise or act is considered sacrosanct among practicing Hindus all over the world, not just in India. That’s why the celebration and festival of Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav assumes so much importance into the Hindu psyche.

During the festival days, sculpted images of Ganesh are put up in colorfully decorated mandals (pavilions) which depict religious themes, current events, or other themes relating to social awareness. There are large public displays of

images of Ganesh with aarti (light rituals), loud religious music, and dancing by devotees.

Mumbai’s biggest Ganeshotsav attractions The people of Mumbai have always celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi with all enthusiasm and joy for more than hundred years now and this festival is nothing less than Diwali especially for Mumbaikars that celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in grand style.

Although the kind of competition and business concept that have been merged with the festival because of the commercialization of Ganesh Chaturthi is a sad trend,, but that does not stop devotees to visit some of the must visit Ganesh mandals in Mumbai that draw large number

The myth and legend of Ganesha • The biggest Ganesha idol is located in Vishakhapatnam and measures more than 70 feet tall.

• Modak is believed to be a favourite of Lord Ganesha and is especially prepared during the festival. Literally, it refers to something that brings joy.

• Lord Ganesha is also refered as “Vigana Harta” (the remover of obstacles) and “Buddhi Pradaayaka” (the giver of wisdom and intellect). In fact, there are around 108 names of Lord Ganesha, but Ganesha and Ganpati are more common.

• Ganesha Chaturthi is also the day when Lord Shiva declared Ganesha to be above all Hindu Gods, excluding Vishnu Lakshmi, Shiva and Parvati.

• Lord Ganesha is sometimes represented with only one tusk. This form of Lord Ganesha is known as Ek Dant. There are many myths about the missing tooth of Ganesha. The most common is the story about the tooth being lost as it was hurled at the moon who had offended Ganesha by mocking him.

• It is considered unlucky to look at the Moon during Ganesha Chaturthi.

According to Hindu mythology, once while returning from a feast,

The Lalbaugcha Raja Do I even have to introduce you to the most famous Ganesh idol in the city? Well, Mumbaikars already love their Lalbaugcha Raja (King of Lalbaug), so probably they know better than me, but for some of my readers let me share a few things.

Established in 1934 this mandal (Ganesh group) managed to gain more popularity in 1990s and have managed to attract more number of people and devotees than any other mandal in the city.

You won’t believe that almost every day a million people come to visit this mandal (idol) believing that Ganpati Bappa will fulfill their wishes.

The mandal is located at G.D. Ambedkar Road in

Ganesha riding atop his mouse, was accosted by a snake. On seeing the snake, the petrified mouse dropped Lord Ganesha on the ground.

Because of the impact of the fall, the belly of Lord Ganesha burst open and the food he had at the feast spilled out. Ganesha gathered all the fallen ladoos and modaks and stuffed them back in his belly, using the snake to hold his belly together. Chandra (Moon) who was watching everything burst out laughing. This enraged Ganesha and he broke his tooth and hurled it at the Moon, cursing him to never be able to shine again. Later, the Moon sought forgiveness and the curse was undone.

But the myth about looking at the moon as a bad luck omen still prevails.

• Though many believe Ganesha to be a bachelor, there are numerous instances where Ganesha is represented with two wives-Ridhi and Sidhi. Both of them were created by Brahma to placate Ganesha who was distraught at not having any wife when several Gods and deities had more than one. While Ridhi stands for wealth and prosperity, Sidhi symbolises intellect and wisdom. It is believed that anyone who worships Lord Ganesha also invokes the blessings of his wives.

Lalbaug and you can get down at Lower Parel, Curry Road or Chinchpokli stations to get here.

The visiting hours are open around the clock, but your waiting time can be anything from five hours to twenty hours depends on your luck factor and the amount devotees in the line at that time.

Ganesh Galli Mumbaicha Raja Well, the competition is always tough and just couples of lanes away you can find Ganesh Galli Mumbaicha Raja (King of Mumbai) which still many believe is the most popular Ganesh mandal in Mumbai throughout the history of Ganesh mandals. Why? Well, it started way before The Lalbaugcha Raja (King of Lalbaug) was established and it managed to attract devotees and people for more than six decades until The Lalbaugcha Raja manage to garner better response.

Established in 1928 this is also the oldest

Ganesh mandal (group) in the locality which was originally formed for the benefit of mill workers.

The Ganesh mandal is located in Ganesh Galli in Lalbaug and you can get down at either Lower Parel, Curry Road or Chinchpokli stations to get here. While the pandal (visiting area) is always busy and crowded it will take you an hour or so to take the darshan (glimpse) of Lord Ganesha’s idol inside.

12th Lane Khetwadi Ganesh Idol Spectacular is the right word to describe Khetwadicha Ganraj that leaves you spellbound when you enter the pandal (set-up area).

Established in 1959 Khetwadicha Ganraj never achieved the popularity that they have managed to get recently in the last few decades. It was only during early 2000s that the mandal (group) dared to come up with the tallest Ganesh idol

Since then Khetwadicha Ganraj has managed to attract large number of people annually getting the kind of popularity it deserved. The mandal is open to people till late night so you can visit it any time you want. You can get down at Grant Road or Sandhurst Road which are the nearest stations and the pandal is located in the 12th Lane of Khetwadi. Oh, when you are here, do visit other Khetwadi lanes as well that also bring up smaller Ganesh idols. Khetwadi has in all 14 lanes, so you get to see lot of idols here, both

I believe respecting the nature is as good as respecting your God and that is why GSB Seva Ganesh mandal is the most popular mandal (group) for those who think differently. Established in 1952 and started by Gowd Saraswat Brahmin community of Karnataka this Ganesh idol is something that you should not miss out especially when you are on the tour of top Ganesh mandals in Mumbai. So, what makes this Ganesh idol stand apart? Well, its eco-friendly and made out of clay plus it is adorned with real gold. It is believed that this idol is adorned with 60 kilograms of gold. I am not trying to put someone down here, but GSB Seva Ganesh mandal do not play any recorded songs in regional languages that we usually here playing out loud on the streets.

Instead, the mandal (group) plays traditional Indian music instruments which are usually played in South Indian temples. Finally, a group that still sticks to the basics and does not give in to the concept of money.

Andhericha Raja In the last few years, a major part of the city’s population has moved to suburbs and therefore the Andhericha Raja (King of Andheri) has managed to gain more popularity especially for

the people living close to Andheri. The mandal was established in 1966 by mill and factory workers who moved to suburbs from Lalbaug. In simple words, Andhericha Raja is the sort of Lalbaugcha Raja for people that live in this part of Mumbai.

However, don’t expect glitz and glamour here and you will also miss out the tall statues here because Andhericha Raja is not about competition, but about respect and devotion and people come here because they believe that Lord Ganesha will fulfill their wishes and get rid of their problems.

The mandal is located at Veera Desai Road, Azad Nagar in Andheri West. To reach the mandal get down at Andheri station and take a bus or rickshaw to Veera Desai Road, Azad Nagar.

By and large travel in Hong Kong tends to be cheap and affordable.

Taxi fares are particularly affordable, compared to places like London or New York. A local bus in Hong Kong would typically cost $2.82 as would MTR for 2 persons. A peak tram in Hong Kong would cost $7.69.

Fairly expensive. Intercity transportation would cost $30+ while a taxi from the airport to the main city would cost $25+.

It is not for nothing that London is considered one of the most expensive cities in the world! A taxi from Heathrow to city centre can set you back by anywhere from $75 to $100.

The tube is a much more viable option where the same ride would cost anywhere between $5 to $8+. The refundable Oyster card for $8.33 is a great alternative too.

Travel in Mumbai is cheap, on a regular black and yellow taxi, $15 - $18 would be sufficient to take you from one end of the city to another. Private taxis are more expensive. Auto-rickshaws (or tuktuks) start at 25 cents minimum fare and only run in the suburbs. Train travel on the suburban railway network (commonly called local) is most common and advisable; a first class tourist ticket usable on all lines all day would cost $2.6.

Affordable for local Cantonese language schools; prohibitively expensive for English language education at private schools. Indicative costs as high as $1100 a month.

Foreigners pay more for education as is the norm in places round the world. For instance, medicine studies at NUS (National University of Singapore) would cost $37,000+.

Tuition fees in international schools in London can go up to $16,500+ per term. Yet, London also offers students ample opportunities to “earn while they learn”.

Private schools (as opposed to government schools which could even be free but very poor quality) are getting increasingly expensive in Mumbai; even at the pre-school level, you might have to spend upwards of $11,000 on fees, which only get higher as your child progresses through school.

Food in Hong Kong remains fairly affordable. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant would cost you less than $6 while a Combo Meal at McDonald’s would cost less than $4. Beer, both local and imported, would also cost you less than $4.

Plenty of hawkers across Singapore make street food extremely inexpensive yet tasty! Beer starts from $4. A Big Mac costs about $3.5.

A reasonable meal in the business district would cost $23 while a combo meal in a fast food joint would cost just $9. Basic dinner for two at a neighborhood pub would be costlier at $51 though.

Food in Mumbai can be unbelievably cheap, depending on where you eat (high end restaurants can be quite expensive though, even by western standards!). A budget meal at most places would cost less than $5. A big Maharaja Mac chicken burger (equivalent of the Big Mac) at McDonald’s costs just about $1.5, one of the cheapest in the world!

A basic one bedroom apartment in the city centre would cost you $2,500 to rent. Buying one in the same area would cost you nearly $15,000 per square meter.

ong Kong has always been well known (infamous perhaps?!) for its high cost of living, to the extent that for many expats (in particular), it consistently ranks as one of the most expensive places to relocate, according to numerous studies.

At A-Desi Flava we wanted to put this commonly held notion to test.

Accordingly, we went ahead and compared cost of living in Hong Kong to various other places round the world which are also well known for their high cost of living – along various parameters. Our findings are summarized

Buses and subways cost the same - $2.25. Driving in the city is not advisable, especially for newcomers, with traffic, congestion, parking fees being some reasons.

Traveling across Thailand is a convenient and cheap proposition with ample choices for doing so, including by air - competition has meant that airfares tend to be low as well. Once inside Thailand, you will find taxis relatively commonly, especially in Bangkok and other tourist hubs.

They start at a little over a dollar as the minimum fare. Trains and buses are cheap as well.

International schools in Thailand are rather expensive where fees can range anywhere between $10,000 to $20,000 per annum and sometimes even more!

Education in Beijing is becoming an increasingly expensive proposition, especially in international schools which can cost anywhere between $20,000 to $35,000 for senior year of high school.

When it comes to education in New York City, a lot depends on the institution. For instance, the annual tuition and fees at New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts is $31,250 at the time of writing this piece. That said, taking a child right through all the various stages of education in New York City can end up costing $1 million eventually!

While the general reputation of New York is that of an expensive city, food can be cheap depending on where you eat. Generally, there are a number of budget options across the city where you can easily have all 3 meals of the day for less than $10 each.

Median home values in New York are about $525,000 currently. Rent for a one bedroom apartment in the city centre would be $2,800+.

On an average a new car costs about $30,000 in New York City. Remember there are many add-ons which bump up costs, especially parking costs which are very high in the city. There are also many tolls you need to keep in mind. If you are new, use public transport as much as you can.

Clothing can be affordable, depending on where you buy. Forever 21 and Uniqlo among others can be good bargains.

Australia

Vary considerably, depending on the institution as well as the course. As a pointer, school can cost from $7,200 to $28,000 while an undergrad course would cost $14,000 to $30,000.

By and large, food in Thailand is cheap, especially street food (which is also mostly very good quality!) that can be as less as $2. However, hotels and restaurants serving nonThai food do tend to be expensive, maybe ten times as much as street food. A Combo Meal at McDonalds would cost $5.

fter May 2014, and Modi’s swearing in as India’s latest Prime Minister, a lot has changed in the country. Apart from a renewed sense of optimism and enthusiasm for the masses, there seems to be a drastic shift in India’s foreign policy. Not restricted to paltry tokenism and symbolism, the new government at the centre is trying to repair relations with its neighbours, uphold the country’s dignity and respect, uphold age-old tenets of India’s “guest

is god” philosophy, and fighting hard for Indian’s at the global stage – which is nice to see for a change.

Here’s some of the highlights of what we feel is India’s new foreign policy:

Behaving like good neighbours In one bold stroke of statesmanship, Prime Minister designate Mr. Narendra Damodar Modi had raised India’s stature not only in South Asia, but all over the world by doing a very simple – and a first of its kind – thing. He invited the heads of state of all India’s neighbourly nations, particularly pertaining to the South Asian region. India invited Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and leaders from six other neighbouring nations to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi in an unparalleled and symbolically loaded step dictated by the Prime Ministerdesignate.

By extending this invitation, Mr. Modi has shown not only that he has his clear

priorities, often out of the bureaucratic box, but also that in foreign policy he is more likely to follow Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee’s style of making the policy announcement first and leaving it to the bureaucracy to implement it.

Even the American were impressed by Modi’s political acumen. US Secretary of State John Kerry has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inviting his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif for his swearing-in ceremony which he described as the first step towards improving relations between the two neighbours.

“Prime Minister Modi took the important first step of inviting Nawaz Sharif to his inauguration.

Both men are business-minded leaders who want to create opportunity for their people,” Kerry told a Washington-audience at an event organised by the Centre for American Progress (CAP), a US think-tank. “I talked to Nawaz Sharif after his visit there. He was very encouraged, thought it was positive, possibilities he understood. So improved trade is a win-win for both countries and both peoples,” he said.

The bank will be started with an initial size of 100 billion dollars for which the initial subscribed capital will be equally shared by the founding members. The bank will have an initial authorised capital of USD 100 billion. The initial subscribed capital shall be of USD 50 billion to be equally shared by the founding-members. Also, India is going to enjoy a leadership role for the newly formed bank which will be headquartered in Shanghai.

While some see the formation of the NDB as a victory for India, especially after it managed

to ensure that all the countries share the equity equally, fears remain that China, given its immense financial clout and the skewed trade balance ratio, especially with the US, may try to use the bank as a potent arm in the high-stake, high-risk game it is playing to beat the US at its own game.

For India, the challenge to ensure that the new bank`s resources are used for its intended purpose would be daunting given the obvious keenness in New Delhi to not upset the good relationship India has forged with the West in the recent past. How Narendra Modi and his cabinet utilizes the funds loaned by the BRICS bank to deliver on his promise of ‘ache din’ (good days) to the electorate that voted him into power remains to be seen.

World Trade Organization Stand The agricultural sector is India’s most vulnerable sector. With the livelihood of around 650 million

people in the country being dependent on agriculture, India’s interests in the negotiations on agriculture are mainly defensive. India’s offensive interests lie in reducing the heavy subsidisation in developed countries. Keeping its agrarian crisis in view, India had made a strong pitch for according adequate tariff protection to certain products by designating them special products. The products within agriculture regarding which India is extra sensitive with respect to trade liberalisation -- due to their potential for huge employment-generation and livelihood concerns -- include cereals, edible oils and oilseeds and dairy products.

As part of G33, India has strongly supported the need for developing countries to have a Special Safeguard Mechanism (SSM) which would allow them to impose additional tariffs when faced with cheap imports or when there is a surge in imports. However, developed countries and some developing countries have sought to impose

extremely restrictive requirements for invoking SSM, which would render this instrument ineffective.

As far as agriculture is concerned, overall there does not appear to have been any major shift in India’s negotiating stand. It has firmly resisted making deep tariff cuts on agricultural products. At the same time, it is aggressively pushing developed countries to reduce their farm support. While India’s negotiating strategy has been defensive, in general, there are several products in which it may have an export interest.

From India’s perspective it would be most crucial during the Doha negotiations to protect the interests of its farmers, even at the cost of foregoing benefits that might have otherwise been made in services and NAMA negotiations.

As far as agriculture negotiations are concerned, the playing field may be tilted further against India if it is required to undertake deep tariff cuts without any concurrent elimination of farm subsidies by developed countries. As far as NAMA is concerned, without a steep reduction in tariffs in the textiles and clothing sector in developed countries, India may not stand to gain significantly.

Mrs Mehta is currently the President of Hong Kong’s NGO called Be The Change that caters to over 35 children of various ethnic minorities to better their lives with educational opportunities and financial assistance.

A wife, a mother, a grandmother and a mentor, Mrs Mehta is held on a pedestal by all those around her. Many appreciate her wisdom and passion with which she counsels, and attempts to aid children and adults alike towards a better life.

Adesiflava was fortunate to spend some quality time with Mrs Mehta to discuss her 70th birthday, Be The Change and her life in general. This is what she had to say!

Fueling the Fire of Light; Honoring the Men who Fight.

owards the latter end of October 2014, Indians all over the world would be sparked with a new fuel to celebrate their New Year, Diwali, with friends and family, as well as elements of nature. Among the five elements, the presence of fire is particularly pivotal; not only is it used in almost all rituals of prayer, it is also alight in decorative candles - diyas - to amplify the color and grandeur of the celebrations. With Hong Kong’s growing Indian population set to use their lighters and matchsticks this Diwali, we speak with our local Fire Services Department, and find out how the practices in place keeps Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s Fire Services Department (FSD) is often earmarked for its high standards that have consistently kept its performance efficiency over 90%. While trying to be both economical and resourceful, the department has kept abreast with the latest advancements of the industry. They are equipped with state of the art engines and machinery, and many of the staff are sent overseas, to places like USA and Australia, for specialized training programs. The firemen are also often seen volunteering and teaching the public on safety practices. Clearly, their dedication to save

human and animal life stretches beyond just their assigned duties.

The firemen remind us, however, that their success is largely dependent on the victims’ cooperation. Despite the stresses of the situation, “it is very important for the callers to express themselves clearly,” they reiterate.

The victims must convey complete details of the accident, the exact location, and return telephone number. Based on the description, a team of qualified firemen would promptly summon their engines from the nearest station, and strive to arrive at the scene within six minutes.

In the meanwhile, the victims are urged to stay calm and alert, and adhere to all the safety precautions. In instances of fire, people who cannot access the stairs are urged to stay in a room furthest away from the smoke, seal the door with duct tape, and flag their whereabouts to the firemen through the window. Although some rooms may be small and uncomfortable to wait in, especially as Hong Kong properties get smaller and more expensive, the one thing that they would not be lacking in is the safety regulations and facilities.

with the Fire Safety Installation requirements, which mean that they are equipped with accessible fire bells and sprinkler systems.

Before making a building, the plan must be approved by the Buildings Department, and in cases where the building is a school or hospital, the FSD may enforce more stringent requirements. Smoking indoors is now a criminal offence, and the burning of firecrackers by the public is banned in Hong Kong. Although this may quieten our Diwali celebrations when compared to India, the value of one’s life is surely more important

than a few hours of dangerous play.

Besides these, the FSD hasn’t mandated a particular way or instance in which a fire must not be alighted. Flames are ignited on a regular basis, especially while cooking,

using candles, or illuminating a dark place.

Also, religious people, including the local Chinese and Indians, alight fires as part of their rituals. Although fire is often associated with destruction, some religions see it as having a light and sacred energy that can be used to ward off the evil forces. While respecting others’ beliefs and practices, the firemen emphasis that “it is important to strike a balance between traditions and fire safety.”

They urge us to keep all corridors, staircases

and passageways free from obstruction at all times, which means that people must be cautious of where and how they keep their diyas during Diwali, especially if the diyas are left unattended all night. Neighboring onlookers scared or suspicious of anything dangerous would have every right to complain and call the FSD. Besides instances of fire, the FSD are called for their rescue services of several other situations. In 2013, there were more

than 31,000 special service calls, which documented cases of victims being stuck in a lift or locked premises, gas leakage, landslide, flooding, and attempted suicide. Following each incident, the firemen formally review their performances, and assess how they could improve.

With such a systematic practice in place, it is no surprise then that Hong Kong has remains one of the safest places around. Even when dealing with one of the most dangerous elements of nature, one can be rest assured that any accidents would be handled with utmost professionalism and personal care. It is only then that we can enjoy our festivals and celebrations so peacefully, and ignite the fire that would illuminate and enlighten us.

Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) Master Plan for Retirement or Meat-Preying for Finanical Institutions?

nce we trigger the talk on Hong Kong’s chronic problems, readers’ feedback are unstoppable. To echo with the tide of feedback, we focus the action you regularly do every month but might lack a second-thought to apprehend its purpose. rubbish to other’s garden. If our MPF system continues to use a financial product-based approach, it fosters a silly system to encourage a detrimental outcome.

Blind reliance on fund managers’ abilities As mentioned in the preceding paragraph, MPF selections fluctuate with macroeconomic environment. On the other hand, you could have a simple approach to combat inflation and to devise retirement arrangements. At present, you

Overall, our money is trapped in a tight box to yield uncertain returns. Nonetheless, we are living in a globalized world which differs from the one the scheme proposed thirty years ago. Large companies have already adopted approach in the global resource allocation and human deployment.

In a globalized view, sales locations, production location and saving location could come from various areas of the map. Retirement location could be irrelevant to them too. For instant, we embark on a Hong Kong career but we can also deposit funds in other corners of the world. Many readers, Indians or other expatriates, could be a good example that their circumstances have already hinted to retire in elsewhere. Definitely, the subject employee should know more than others do to plan for overseas retirement matters. Nevertheless, this category of staff cannot exempt from MPF enrollment. Largest showcase of Indian culture, heritage in China as part of year long festival

India and China usher in greater military understanding along its border The Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army met in a ceremonial border personnel meeting on August 15, India’s Independence Day. The two sides met on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the boundary demarcating Chineseadministered land from Indian-administered land in the disputed regions of northeastern Kashmir.

Specifically, the troops met in eastern Ladakh, near where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi traveled last week and delivered a speech condemning Pakistan. According to The Hindu, a similar ceremony was held on the Chinese side of the border on August 1.

According to a public relations officer on the Indian side, Col. S.D. Goswami, “Both sides reiterated their commitment in upholding the protocols and agreements signed between the two countries and acknowledged that the peace

and tranquility which prevails along the Line of Actual Control should be further strengthened and stabilized.” India and China signed a Border Defense Cooperation Agreement (BDCA) last October following a stand-off in April 2013 where a small contingent of Chinese PLA troops entered the Indian side of the LAC and set up camp for about three weeks. The BDCA was intended to swiftly resolve these sorts of incursions in the future.

According to the Wall Street Journal‘s Live Mint, the meeting was less administrative and more focused on fostering good military-tomilitary ties between the two sides. Both sides enjoyed “cultural and entertainment shows and sports events.” Col. Goswami noted that the “participation of Chinese delegation in India’s Independence Day celebrations is a gesture which will further foster friendly relations between India and China and build up mutual trust and confidence.”

Aptly called “Glimpses of India”, the largest ever festival of Indian culture and heritage in China was inaugurated in Shanghai and Beijing with a classical dance programme performed by the Chennai-based Kalakshetra earlier this May. The year-long festival will have a sprinkling of the usual ingredients often served as an intrinsic part of Indian culture – movies, Yoga, an exhibition of IT and cuisine from different parts of the country. A break from the tradition will be the focus on Buddhism including an exhibition of Buddhism-related artefacts exhibited in the 200- year-old Indian Museum in Kolkata.

“It will be a very large exhibition,” Ravindra Singh, secretary of culture, told Indian journalists in Beijin.

Singh said this was the first time that Indian culture was being showcased in China in such a large-scale.“The focus is on people who do not know India...to reach out to the Chinese youth,” Singh said.A film festival with around a dozen Hindi and regional language movies is expected to be held later this year. A bunch of movies has been submitted to the Chinese government for their censor board to see and certify.

China's Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jianchao, while inaugurating the festival, said: “Even today, the Chinese people are mesmerised by the mysterious culture of India and also eager to learn more about the oriental wisdom, spirit and charm embodied in the Indian civilisation.”

“I believe that the activities during the Glimpses also offer an opportunity and window to Chinese people to learn about India, get close to India and embrace India,” Liu added.

Chinese students rush to Gujarat to learn Hindi amidst growing trade between India and China With trade relations between India and China thriving, several Chinese nationals are now flocking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat to learn Hindi.

at China's Yunnan Minzu University is in India to learn Hindi. Growing business relations between India and China have triggered a trend where Chinese students want to learn Hindi. Li Chaoling aims to be a Hindi teacher in China and she already speaks the language to some extent.

"Mujhe aasha hain ki Hindi ki adhyapika banu (I want to be a Hindi teacher and teach more people to learn Hindi)", says Chaoling.

Chaoling is one of the 11 Chinese students who have enrolled for the nine-month Business Hindi Certification Course at Ahmedabad's Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India.

The students want to work as translators with companies that do business with India and want

to teach Hindi in Chinese schools and colleges.

Others want to be entrepreneurs and do business with Indian companies.

"What we are teaching is business Hindi... They have to communicate with Indians in business situations... demand, supply, quality, taxation etc," says Dr Dinesh Awasthi, Director, EDI. Dear Aunty MVP, I’m Mike , please advice the best thing I can do in this situation. The mother of one of my best friends was diagnosed with liver cancer a few months ago. She is quite ill and in a lot of pain. She's been in and out of the hospital lately and things don't look so good. My own father was diagnosed with prostate cancer a year and a half ago, but he is really doing quite well (with medication, treatment, etc.).

My friend's mother will probably be dead within six months to a year, so I'm not going through an immediate crisis. My question is: What things should (and shouldn't) I be saying to, and doing for, my friend? I try so hard to be there for her but I really don't know what she's going through. She is very matter-of-fact about the fact that her mom is going to die. But I'm sure there's something I could be doing, isn't there? I hate feeling like I'm actually making her feel worse! Could you give me some idea of what she might be going through right now and how I could help? Ranbir Kapoor to meet Katrina Kaif's mother Suzanne?

hey haven't even made their relationship official yet but buzz has it that Ranbir Kapoor is wasting no time in meeting rumored girlfriend Katrina's Kaif mother Suzanne Turquotte in London.

Whether they admit it or not there sure seems to be some huge development taking place. First there were the reports claiming they were buying a flat together and moving; then came the romantic getaways and now finally this.

Reportedly Katrina Kaif has already met Ranbir's family including matriarch Krishna Raj.

And his latest trip to London will have Ranbir meeting her mom but it won't be the first time.

Ranbir and Katrina, along with their mothers Neetu Singh and Suzanne, have reportedly already met before.

But the sudden shift in gears has us wondering that there could be more.

Govinda says no to film with Alia Bhatt !!

utting an end to all speculations of a film starring actor Govinda and Alia Bhatt as father and daughter respectively, it has now been reported that Govinda has apparently turned down the film.

Director Vikas Bahl of Queen fame was planning on bringing to the screen yesteryear superstar Govinda playing father to a cool and vibrant Alia.

The film has been tentatively titled 'Shaandar'.

While reasons for Govinda backing out of the project range from apparent financial disagreements to prior commitments, neither the actor nor director have given out a formal announcement.

The film starring Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor is Vikas Bahl's second film after Queen and will be shot extensively in Europe.

Juhi Chawla Faces Disappointment in Hollywood

uhi Chawla is going to be starring in a Steven Spielberg production The Hundred Foot Journey, directed by Lasse Hallstrom.

The current buzz in Bollywood is that Juhi Chawla is extremely disappointed in what was meant to be her Hollywood debut.

Even as The Hundred-Foot Journey is being talked about, it’s not what Juhi signed up for.

According to sources, she was given a different impression altogether and was told she would have a pivotal role as Om Puri’s wife in the film.

But rumour has it that all the scenes Juhi shot for were snipped at the editing table and she only appears in the beginning of the film. She’s said to be quite mad at this and has refused to promote the film.

On the other hand, you have Govinda who supposedly turned down James Cameron who approached him with a script. Govinda has said that he told James the film was a potential blockbuster but thank you, he didn’t want to sign up for it. Even as you ask why anyone would turn down James Cameron, Govinda’s reasons are unique as he says he didn’t want to be painted blue in the film! Also, Juhi is going to be ageing 15 years for the film -- at least digitally with advanced post-production techniques.

We can't wait to see Juhi's new avatar and are proud of her for bagging this amazing role!

Aamir Khan defends nudity on PK poster

S

uperstar Aamir Khan, who has left many intrigued and many ridiculing him over his nude look in the poster of his upcoming film "PK", says it's not for publicity. Calling it "key art", he says it depicts the story of the film.

The poster of Rajkumar Hirani's "PK" features Aamir posing nude with a strategically placed boombox hiding his modesty. While some appreciated the dare bare act, some even criticised it and even called it a "publicity stunt".

Talking about it, Aamir said: "When you (audience) will watch the film then only you will be able to understand the idea behind (the poster). But I would just like to say that the kind of filmmaker, the kind of writer Rajkumar is, he always tries to present the things, his thinking, in a unique way and that's why I am his huge fan."

Aamir spoke on the sidelines of a screening of Marathi film "Saturday Sunday" here Wednesday.

Citing the example of the poster of one of his past production and directorial debut, "Taare Zameen Par", he said: "In the poster of 'Taare Zameen Par', the child (actor Darsheel Safary) is sitting in the front on the school bench and I am sitting behind him. So it is a kind of key art...the image that tells you much about the story and so is the poster of 'PK'."

"This is not for publicity, not for us atleast. Infact, this poster embibes all the elements of the film."

Meanwhile, a case was also filed in a court in Kanpur recently against Aamir, director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. They were accused of promoting nudity and vulgarity through "PK" poster.

However, the actor is hopeful that everything will get clear once people watch the film when it releases in December.

"We are getting a mixed response from the people. But I feel that when they will watch the film, their doubts will get cleared," the 49-year-old said.

"PK" also features actor Sanjay Dutt, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput.
