Hello Readers, I am excited to be publishing this brand new issue of A-Desiflava Magazine. As 2021 reaches its mid-way, the whole world seems to be getting used to wearing face masks, using hand sanitizer, and having a little fear from the deadly Coronavirus. I feel this coronavirus has caused great havoc all over the world, but if you look at it in a good way, it has also made us human beings more civilized, cleaner, and healthier. Daily Yoga, & body stretching exercises, eating healthy food, drinking less alcohol, and reduced smoking are certainly on top of everyone’s head. In every heart there lies at least one tragic story of death caused due to our almost-two-year-old friend named covid-19, and the daily covid-19 news is sufficient to keep us on our healthy toes at all times. Blessing in disguise isn’t it? as long as your healthy, energetic and active, it is surely a blessing for all. I was thinking about what would be a perfect cover story for this issue when someone called me and asked me if A-Desiflava Magazine is a magazine for south Asians? I asked him why does he ask this question. His reply was “Your magazine is mostly about Indians, then why call it a south Asians magazine?”. This question struck my head hard, and I started researching topics and stories related to South Asians living in Hong Kong. Suddenly, my 6-year-old Son asked me “Papa, how come we Indians live in Hong Kong, and why do we look and speak different compared to the Chinese?”, I told him “Cause we are a different breed altogether”, then his next question was “Papa, who was the first Indian person who entered Hong Kong?”, I starting googling, but couldn’t find an exact answer for my

son. This is when I came across a book published by the Hong Kong University Press called “Understanding South Asian Minorities in Hong Kong”. I read the entire lengthy article which was like a synopsis of the entire book. After reading the article, I understood that the history of us, Indians, Nepalese & Pakistani’s goes way back to the mid-1850s. It was amazing to learn how our south Asian descendants worked with the Britishers in Hong Kong and how they evolved as a such massive community that stands so strong in Hong Kong today. You all must read the cover story ‘Understanding South Asian Minorities in Hong Kong’, and once you have finished reading the entire article, you will surely get your children also to read it and understand where our roots lie in Hong Kong. Did you know which Hong Kong-based businessman and cricketer married a leading Pakistani actress?. In my new section called Chit-Chat, I’ve had the opportunity to do a Zoom call interview with Hong Kong’s known and famous cricket enthusiast and businessman Mr.Imran Idrees and Pakistan’s leading actress and model Jia Ali. Both got married recently in Pakistan, and what a deserving couple they are, Wow! Our Chit-Chat went from personal to professional and ended up with a lovely tale of how they both fell in love and got married. Local School Vs International School? This question has always been very debatable and thought-provoking. Whenever you see a couple of Indians, whether it be Males or Females, it does not matter, but this one question will surely be that one hot topic of discussion. There’s always been a mixed reaction and feedback from our local community people. Some of the rich ones want their kids to study in local schools and some of the middle-class ones want their children to study in International schools. So where does the difference lie?. Let’s understand a bit of the pros and cons, very well explained by our regular writer Manju Mishra. I came to Hong Kong in 2010, started A-Desiflava magazine with my wife in 2011 and we’ve organized many musical and cultural events in Hong Kong right from the time we checked in HK. One person I would like to talk about is Mr.Suresh Purswaney, whom I met at our first musical event Bhoole Bisre Geet, and this way a long time ago, must be 2013/2014. He was

so passionate about his singing during the Karaoke night, that I had no other option but to award him as the best male singer. Starting from that day onwards, he went ahead and formed his musical group in Hong Kong by the name of Sur Sadhana. He’s taken music & singing to another level with Sur Sadhana. With over 20 extremely talented singers, musicians, composers this musical group, I am sure is the most talented hardcore music lovers group, and I want every Indian living in Hong Kong to attend one of the events of Sur Sadhana, and I can challenge you, that you will feel that your at a live concert where some top professional musicians and singers are wi. My wife and I happened to attend the valentines day special event of Sur Sadhana this year, and trust me, it was a complete musical bliss. Read about Sur Sadhana in our PROFILES section. Beauty & Health and Astrology section have great reads about healthy food recipes and the importance of Tarot Cards written by our talented writers Kiran Sukhani and Apeksha Mehta. This issue has turned out quite well, and all thanks to our regular readers who still call me every month asking me when is the next issue coming out? I feel so proud and blessed, and I always say to myself ‘why can’t an engineer like me become a notso-famous but yet a decent publisher and editor? It’s never the profession, expertise, or skills, but sometimes it’s the passion and something which comes from within you. This is exactly what A-Desiflava Magazine is really for me.

UNDERSTANDING

SOUTH ASIAN MINORITIES

IN HONGKONG.

A History of Indian, Pakistani and Nepalese in Hong Kong INDIAN PAKISTANI

A

ccording to John Nguyet Erni and Lisa Yuk-ming Leung, it is a must to establish the diverse histories of South Asian settlement in the region before exploring the situation of South Asia in Hong Kong. The literature about their settlement does not measure the number of years they have been in the territory, nor does it consider the contributions. This is one of the similar problems faced when studying the histories of EMs. This mainly refers to the case with South Asians in Hong Kong whose ancestors landed in Hong Kong for various reasons. This chapter aims to defy an essential belief of the “History” by asserting that the term “History” of the ethnic groups we focus on is diverse and that myriad Historical sources exist beyond official historical records. It also concentrates on institutional and personal

HONG KONG

histories to fill up the gaps of official history and enrich our understanding of how South Asian settlers negotiated life and their contributors to a place their successors now call “home.” It argues for a cultural history approach of Indians, Nepalese, and Pakistanis in Hong Kong to retell the histories. The author has given a brief about these ethnicities in the upcoming section as told in the official literature. The South Asians earlier in Hong Kong had essentially to do with the expansion of the British Empire. Military

services, labor, trade, and the need for the government were the four massive reasons for the South Asia settlement of Hong Kong in earlier history. Barbara Sue White is an author from Hong Kong. She implies that trade being a prime factor connected British and Indian interest in Hong Kong. Also, the war between Britain and China occurred due to trade. The first Indians and Gurkhas (Nepalese soldiers) that stood foot on the land of Hong Kong were recruits of the British army who settled there. The Gurkhas had a

reputation for bravery, loyalty, and fierceness. They also fought for the British under the East Company Army and then as a part of the British army during the Rebellion of 1857. The Nepalese resided in barracks in Jordan Shek Kong Yuen Long. In contrast, some lived in Wanchai and remained in Hong Kong as residents, and many were stationed elsewhere. The UK government in the 1990s extended a nationality package to the Nepalese Gurkhas and their descendants as recognition of their outstanding source.

The government had arranged for Muslim Indians to settle there, aiming to make ethnic zones for them. Th eir main duties were patrolling the areas bordering Shenzhen to prevent illegal entry.)

INDIAN AND PAKISTANI TRADERS: ECONOMIC SETTLEMENT: The authors state that apart from having an employeremployee relationship, the British and South Asians were trading partners during the early colonial era. The

South Asian traders took advantage of the political stability in Hong Kong under British colonial rule. They took over the British trading activities in South China. As the East India Company’s trade with China reached its tenure, South Asian seamen were recruited to work on the ships that sailed them to the shores of Hong Kong. The Parsee and Bohra Muslims migrated to Hong Kong

from India by the British to look out for economic opportunities. Though the population of Indians was only 1,348 in 1898, their population increased from 7,000 to 20,000 in the span of 1900-1960. The Indians from the provinces of Sindhi and Gujarat opened offices in the Hong Kong territory. The Indian Chamber of Commerce was established

in 1952 to represent the interests of all Indian traders in the territory. In the 1970s, Hong Kong’s economy was flourishing. This resulted in a higher economic and political status for the Hindu and Muslim traders in Hong Kong. The influx of Pakistanis from the 1990s onwards, in addition, seems to have driven home the view that the majority of this ethnic group in Hong Kong falls

into a lower socio-economic class. The Indian community in Hong Kong engaged in different industries, such as accountancy, insurance, education, medicine, banking, and finance. The contribution of Indian businessmen in Hong Kong’s economy in the fields of Import and Export in Hong Kong is notable and outstanding. They also contributed to the transformation of Tsim Sha Tsui from an army base into a burgeoning shopping area, supporting Hong Kong’s leading tourist economy.

RELIGION: MUSLIM IDENTITY AND COMMUNITY: The authors state that Muslims of Sunni origins among the South Asian traders and businessmen were well known in Hong Kong for their religious attributes. Muslims around that time worked as soldiers and policemen. The Muslims from the Punjab Regiment in Hong Kong had petitioned for land in 1884 and received it, which is now close to where the Kowloon Mosque stands. The authors also state that the earliest Muslim Indians were traders, seamen, and various security staff who lived in the central part of Hong Kong Island. Due to the Kowloon Mosque being ceded by the British, the Muslim seamen, including the Pakistanis, Indians, and Malays, formed themselves in well-knitted dormitory areas. The area where the Muslims practiced their faith soon came to be known as a Muslim enclave as they would

w w w . a d e s i f l a v a . c o m

gather for their daily salat and Jamat. Even though the Muslims barely had any literature in their socio-cultural lives in Hong Kong, maintaining the Muslim faith had been emerging in the lives of many South Asians living there. The author mentioned that Islam provided a stronghold for mostly Indians and Pakistanis in the early period of their settlement. Around that time, mosques function as a place to worship and a place for handling dead bodies, and as a center for social and cultural life. The prayers said in the Mosques united Muslims from different parts of the country. Activities were organized around the Shelly Street Mosque, such as wells were built for water supply and shops opened up that sold Halal meat. Muslims would gather at the Kowloon Mosque for their Juma prayers. The Indian , Chinese and Pakistani Muslims chose to say prayers in Arabic as their unifying language. Various Mosques were built in years 1845, 1885, 1890, and 1895 to serve hundreds of Muslims residing in Hong Kong. The ‘local boys’ was a term used for the generation of Muslims in Hong Kong born out of inter-racial marriages between South Asian Muslim men and Chinese women. They were carving out an identity distinct from that of their forefathers. The establishment of Mosques around that time encouraged the Muslims to form associations and community groups. The “Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund in Hong Kong,” also referred to as

“Board of Trustees,” was formed to manage Mosques and Muslim cemeteries. Apart from religious functions carried out by the organizations such as “Islamic Union, Hong Kong was set up in the early 1900s to promote trade with China. Organizations such as the Board of Trustees, including the Pakistan Association of Hong Kong, the Indian Muslim Association, and the Hong Kong Dawoodi Bohra Association, played a significant role in framing a sense of belonging in the host society of Hong Kong for the Muslim communities.

INTERACTION WITH LOCAL CHINESE : Here the author states the differences between the early South Asian settlers and the Chinese due to language barriers and cultural differences. The interactions between the two groups varied depending on their socio-economic roles. This created difficulties for those working in law and order. Even though maintaining law and order created a unique existence for Indians in Hong Kong, it created tension between them and the local Chinese. The authors, however, explain how in reality, there was a bit of socio-cultural interaction between the two groups.

This was a situation that could be attributed to the British colonial policy of racial and cultural segregation. The author says that there is very little interaction between the South Asian

settlers and the local Chinese. Language, racial and religious differences made it uncomfortable for the Chinese and Muslim Indians to interact with each other. Even if both the groups worked alongside, they were allocated separately and did not socialize with one another. Due to the heat between the Chinese and the British, the Sikhs from India and Pakistan descent were not shown enthusiasm by the Chinese population because the Sikhs were considered as auxiliaries of the British. Being conservative about their cultures, the Sikhs and Chinese preferred not to interact outside of business. Only Hindus and Parsees that were economically significant were accepted socially by the local community, unlike the tight-knit Parsee community that received very little social acceptance from the British and the Chinese residents. All this being a reason because of the segregation policy by the British colonial rule.

Intermarriage between South Asians and local Chinese varied with different ethnicities and religions. The Sindhi Indians, Parsees, Muslims, and other Indians were not interested in marrying the local Chinese and remained distant. Unlike the Sunni Muslims, who were less restricted by their religion to marry an outcast. This resulted in intermarriages with the Chinese becoming common. The British colonial government brought the Indians, Pakistanis, and Nepalese to Hong Kong for recruitment into the army, police, and security sector.

Yet, they share differences based on their religion and culture.

ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: THE CASE OF ISLAMIC KASIM TUE MEMORIAL COLLEGE: Here the author talks about how the government set up several designated schools in Hong Kong to cater to south Asian minorities. The authors then shine a light on how the Muslim organization has established two of those schools. Mr. Yusuf Yu is the principal of Islamic Kasim Tue Memorial College (IKTMC) and sets to be a living example to the lineage of the Chinese Muslims. The IKTMC was set up in 1970 by The Chinese Muslim Cultural and Fraternal Association. This association set up in 1920 favors the Muslim community in Hong Kong by organizing classes in Islam and religious activities and setting up schools for the incumbent. IKTMC’S partial goal was to serve the second generation of Muslims who were born in Hong Kong. The IKTMC, which is currently known as the Islamic English School, started with the mission to “demonstrate how Islam is a complete way of life” and “to provide and maintain a harmonious environment in which students from multicultural backgrounds can learn and work together in an enjoyable and successful way.” In the 1970s, the Muslims had a small minority in Hong Kong. Due to low student enrolment, the College

was forced to change from English Medium of instruction to Chinese Medium of instruction to attract more local Chinese students. In the 1990s, there was an increase in South Asian Pakistani’s which resulted in an increase in Pakistani students. There was an ethnic mix as more and more Mainlanders acquired the right of abode in Hong Kong, including those of Muslim descendants. In an interview, Mr. Yusuf Yu stated to the authors that the College has 60% of Chinese students, and the rest include Pakistani, Filipino, Indonesian, Nepalese, Indian, Australian, and Bruneian students. The religious background of the school doesn’t only make it only a provider of secondary education to the Hong Kong public but also as an institution that fosters the Islamic faith among believers. Mr. Yu also mentions that the school organizes Arabic as well as Urdu classes. They also hold different levels of Quran classes for believers after school in which Mr. Yu himself teaches. He also says that the school does not force non-believers into converting to Islam. He goes on to add that students are welcome to join their Jamats and worship, but they do not force them to attend any religious classes or activities. Even though Mr. Yu enjoys teaching about Islamic faith to the students, he notices uncomfortable coordination between religion and education and finds himself caught at crossroads. Mr. Yu then explains how impactful education is for students for them to pursue their own life goals. He says that due to time management, Muslim students are often caught up

in balancing their religious education (that teaches them the way of life) and formal education (that teaches them how to be successful humans). Due to which it becomes difficult for Muslim students to complete their homework as they are often attending prayer sessions at the mosques every day or due to festivals. Even their parents can’t do anything about the time management between religion and studies in these instances. Hence, Mr. Yu says that this topic is directly spoken to their Imams, who is the head authority of their religion and can explain to the students the importance of education in their lives and pursuing their dreams. Mr. Yu also talks about how the Muslim faith constrains women from actualizing their own aspirations and subordinates their social roles to those of men. Mr. Yu has noticed many of his female students who excelled in academics leave education due to family traditions of early marriage. Hence, the principal stands to fight against the society that

S T O R Y

9

neglects women to achieve their goals as he mentions that the Quran states no such thing that women cannot pursue their own purposes or be economically independent. Mr. Yu then concludes by explaining that the prime motive of IKTMC is to make Muslim students proud of their religion and culture and not be ashamed. The school also ensures that the South Asian students turn out to be productive in the Hong Kong community.

ETHNICAND AND ETHNIC RELIGIOUS RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS: ORGANIZATIONS: THE CASE CASEOF OF THE THE KOWLOON KOWLOON THE MOSQUEAND AND MOSQUE ISLAMICUNION UNION ISLAMIC OF HONG HONGKONG KONG OF Here the authors shine a light on the Kowloon Mosque and the history of its existence. significant role for the Islamic community in Hong Kong. However, the first Mosque was built in 1896 and later faced structural damage that was caused by the MTR (Mass Transit Railway). The MTR corporation then compensated by rebuilding the Mosque on its original site in 1984. The Chief Imam of the Kowloon Mosque states that the first Indian Muslims in Hong Kong who were in the British army had requested their commander to make land available to build a mosque as the Muslim soldiers used to pray 5 times a day. The Mosque then became a center of attraction of religious and cultural lives of Muslims in Hong Kong. The Imam then mentioned to the authors, “For us Muslims, it is a life process to learn something more about religion, life, and spirituality.” The Islamic Union’s roots can be traced back to 1905. The Islamic Union of Hong Kong is housed in the Islamic Centre on Oi Kwan Road in Wan Chai. The Islamic Union was set up to respond to the daily and specific needs of the Muslims in the territory. The building, only having 6 floors, has a majestic and stunning look to it. The Islamic Union’s building offers facilities to its members. They includea Masjid, a Mosque, a classroom for believers and non-believers to learn about Islam, a kindergarten, and a restaurant that provides Halal Chinese cuisine. The heart of the Islamic Union lies on the 6th floor of the building that includes 2 council members’ offices, a general office, and a clinic. The Union has been keen on promoting the teachings of the Quran to children from a very young age and has been tasked

w w w . a d e s i f l a v a . c o m

(The Kowloon Mosque) to teach cultural traditions and values to Muslims and perpetuate traditional gender values through the Quran.

THE INDIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: The Indian Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of small enterprises such as tailor shops and restaurants that had started to spread in the early 90 into the Hong Kong economy and also handles external trade. Acquiring and investing in properties became the most important factor for Indians to be recognized in Hong Kong. The Chamber of Commerce is in contact with many Indian organizations that oversee the sociocultural life of the Indian

community. The Indian and Hindu Associations look after the Hindu and Sikh temples to provide Indians a place to pray and worship and for communal gatherings. Other associations in Hong Kong are tasked to organize social and cultural events to enhance the cultural and ethnic bonding among the Indian communities. The Council of Hong Kong Indian Association was formed in 1973 to promote better understanding among members of the Indian community, to maintain the Indian Identity, and to strengthen the community’s relationship with the Hong Kong government and society. Representatives from the Hong Kong Indian Association and other Indian Organizations would schedule a meeting once

every six weeks to discuss the problems faced by the members of the Indian community. Enhancing the economic opportunities of Indians in Hong Kong has also been one of the missions of the Chamber of Commerce, as it set up education trust funds for local Indian students to continue their studies overseas or for students in India to study in Hong Kong.

A NEPALESE LIFE: THE “TRANSLOCAL” GURKHA Mr. Durga Gurung was recruited in Pokhra in 1981 and immediately assigned to the Second Rifl es; he was

stationed in Shek Kong aft er internment. Aft er a brief training he was deployed to Brunei for two years. “When the company moved, everyone moved,” Gurung remembered. But he returned to Hong Kong aft er two years to patrol the borders when the British colonial government was dealing with an infl ux of Mainland Chinese immigrants. “We covered the whole border of Hong Kong. We were a team of four; one could take a full day off , while another had to take twenty-four-hour guard. Th e other two would patrol the area for twelve hours a day.” Th ey were stationed in Sai Kung, Fanling, Tuen Mun, and other border areas. Th e regiments would rotate duties, e.g. border control and manning the camp. At the camp, Gurung received training in shooting and acting as a bodyguard.

were still stationed on the islands, but Gurung returned to Hong Kong in 1987 and then moved to the UK, where he served his “public duty” at the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. He returned to Hong Kong in 1988 again, and in 1991, he went back to Brunei after a brief break in Nepal, bringing his wife and children with him. But the uncertain prospects of the Gurkhas still haunted Mr. Gurung. “As early as 1986, A Cultural History of South Asians in Hong Kong. the British already knew that Hong Kong had to be returned to China, so they had decided how to deal with the 12,000 strong Gurkhas aft er 1997.” Not encour aged by the prospects of returning to Nepal, Mr. Gurung took the opportunity

to apply for redundancy in 1995, and for residency in Hong Kong. His wife had a Hong Kong ID card because she was born in Hong Kong. Mr. Gurung’s father in-law had also been stationed in Hong Kong as a Gurkha. But like the younger Gurung, neither was eligible for Hong Kong residency. “Even though we had lived in Hong Kong for more than seven years [altogether], we could not apply for the HKID card, because by law, we had to have lived in Hong Kong continuously for seven years, but we kept being posted elsewhere.” To support the family, Mr. Gurung found a job as bouncer for a club in Tsim Sha Tsui. “If there are fi ghts in the club, the security guards would be the polite ones; we were supposed to take them out

and deal with them.” Aft er a month, however, he decided to quit the job, because having been a soldier for many years, he could not cope with the “unhealthy” lifestyle of smoke and alcohol. He then worked for Motorola and various other technology companies where heavier security was required, until he was persuaded by his friends to work in a security company. Th e job change also advanced his salary to $23,000 a month. By then he and his wife had saved enough money so that his wife could open a hairdressing salon in Jordan. He himself, however, never desired to own a company. “I do not have a business mind. I am never comfortable with having to trick and deceive people in business.” With the $25,000 a month pension from the

At that time, the British already realized that Hong Kong had to be handed over in 1997. Suddenly they were concerned about “IS” (internal security): how to control crowds, handle terrorists, even bombers who could attack from a passing car. We were wondering why they got us to be trained in all this, when Hong Kong seemed so safe then . . . When the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group reached agreement about the future of Hong Kong in 1986, they realized the need to decide on what to do with the Gurkhas. Luckily, there was the Falklands War. Mr. Gurung was dispatched for six months to support the British in the Falklands. Aft er the war, the Gurkhas

unintentional, disinterested or even involuntary way by sources and monuments; they betray their secrets unconsciously. The authors further include the idea that history as “cultural” comes from a critical approach that acknowledges the growing importance of “culture” in the rethinking of ways to record human activities. They finally conclude by mentioning, “By relating these life histories, this chapter hopes to reveal their diversity, not just across ethnicities, but also across generations. As they are told by the younger generations, these histories are narrativized as “histories in the making” as they merge with the present.”

Mr. Gurung is reluctant to be resettled in the UK because he considers Hong Kong his second home. To his fi rst home, Nepal, he contributed by rendering service to the Non-Resident Nepalese Federation. “Th e Association” collects donations from diasporic Nepalese all over the world to support development projects in Nepal.

In cooperation with the local Nepalese community, the Federation holds seminars for local Nepalese residents to raise their civic and public awareness in the host society. Gurung also believes that the civic mindedness of the Nepalese originates from their Gurkha history of having protected the borders of this adopted home.

CONCLUSION: The authors then conclude the literature by explaining the definition of ‘Cultural History’ that was researched by them and adds to the meaning behind it. To make sure that we are choosing the best available educational Institution for our kid’s wisdom enlightenment. We have to go through a proper channel session to wisely understand educational patterns and schools systematic review for our younger generation, to take a sure-shot progressive step to get admitted to a school, where they not only get reformed and raised with individual excellence in all fields. International school or A Localized school education is better for our kids, that’s a vital question arises in every family.

Image credit: pixabay Let’s briefly review the pros and cons of International and Local schools to get a clear picture.

International schools tend to put more emphasis on inquiry-based learning. It means that your child will be learning through questioning and doing rather than being ‘taught.’ Although this type of learning is being practiced in some mainstream schools, the majority relies heavily on textbooks for all subjects. There is a clear advantage of the discursive learning approach over old customized lesson taking and examination techniques followed by government schools. Still, It is wisely said that it is entirely up to students’ techniques followed by government schools. Still, It is wisely said that it is entirely up to students’ individuality to go along with their preferred embodiment of customized or inquirylearning procedure.

Visible pros and cons can be enlisted further for your consideration as follows.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS (PRIVATE AND ESFSUBSIDISED SCHOOLS) Pros: As soon the word “international” comes to our mind, a sense of Globalization empowers our senses. Talking of a Global Mindset: At “international” schools, students will often have ties to other countries outside of Hong Kong. Interacting with these classmates helps children develop cultural sensitivity. Also, learning to be both from Hong Kong and another country makes your child a Third Culture Kid – an internationally-conscious and global citizen. Another critical perspective is English Proficiency ,No doubt, international schools provide students with a high level of English fluency. Taught by teachers from around the globe and immersed in an English-speaking environment among peers, students often graduate with native-like English.: usually equates to a collective amalgamation of Australian, British, and North American Englishness. Students in international schools are often wellversed in popular culture, which makes for easier enterance in university. In addition, of sense of socialism is the built-in quality of International entourage among schools. The students have an enrichment program for them to get well engaged among countable cultural and social backgrounds. Their sociability is nourished, and we’ll be directed towards excellent rewards. Students from international schools are generally more sociable as compared to local school students. Schools value well-rounded students who engage in academics, sports, and the community. This provides children with rich experiences and allows them to cultivate a healthy school-life balance extending well beyond their school years.

w w w . a d e s i f l a v a . c o m

By comparison, in international schools, children progress with reading at their own pace and are not tested on vocabulary. Instead, they are encouraged to write book reviews that engage thinking. Books are also used as a springboard for other activities such as writing.

Cons: If you plan to get admission to renowned and reputable International Schools for your kid, the first thing you have to bear is an Expensive Education. No doubt, quality education comes with heavy pockets. These private or ESF subsidiary schools are exponentially more costly than local schools. Although several scholarships are available to students, these private schools rely on debentures and tuition dollars to please check on all related expenses and services instead of that because paying more doesn’t necessarily mean getting a good education. Acknowledging that all students will be exposed to arrogance and deviations in behaviour at some point in their school careers (e.g., smoking, drinking, promiscuity). It is noted that students in international schools are exposed to these issues much earlier than their local school counterparts, who maintain a childlike innocence (for better or for worse) in their secondary school years. The western approach and openness of thoughts would make kids quite bold, and arrogance comes naturally. Competitiveness is fed in with studies to accelerate their academic performance and provide an excellent name to the school. Studies Curriculum and academic portfolios serve as a pro or a con, depending on the education system you would like your child to follow. While local schools are relatively standardized in their curricula, international schools often adopt country-

specific curricula and examinations (e.g., French International School offers the French Baccalaureate). Picking the most suitable curriculum for your situation will allow for a seamless transition into society.

LOCAL SCHOOLS (PUBLIC GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS) Pros: Proficiency in local linguistic skills are more likely to gain fluency in the Chinese languages (Portungua, Cantonese and Mandarin) in a local school. Immersed in an environment where Chinese is spoken among peers, your child will likely talk, read and write with a high level of proficiency. You should strongly consider the EMI (English Medium of Instruction) schools and will need to hire a tutor if Chinese is not used at home. When English is used as Medium of Instruction it kind of balance the linguistic skills among young minds. As Local schools emphasize on heritability cultural basics, The children will gain an in-depth understanding

and sincere appreciation for Hong Kong culture in the local school system. Beyond surface-level aspects of culture (e.g., food, clothing, traditions), I identified more deeply with Hong Kong people as a teacher than I ever did as a student in an international school. Even traditional festivals are well taught and celebrated in localized schools, which in turn create awareness among expat kids and help them mingle among Chinese society later. Although this trait is cultivated by a need to perform well on tests and exams, selfdiscipline is an admirable quality that translates well to the workforce. With my quint essential experience as primary teacher training kids with Cambridge English courses, I have come across a lot of good habitual pattern and well maintained discipline in local schools. It keeps students always boosted and enthusiastic. Which are absolutely positively good attributes for successful career ahead.

Cons: Students are assigned copious amounts of homework every day. Although some local schools are beginning to question the use and effectiveness of homework, children can easily spend 3 hours per day completing it, meaning less time for non-academic activities equally crucial to building a child’s character. Examinations in Midterm and end-ofyear summative assessments count for a large portion of a child’s grade, resulting in lessons devoted to testing preparation. Although formative assessments (e.g., portfolios) are slowly being introduced, children are ranked and streamed into secondary schools according to these high-stakes test results, which may not be the best indicator of future success. The way a child perceives the world is influenced by both the home and school environments. Because schools are dominated by tests and exams with right and wrong answers, children often think that life consists of only right or wrong

answers. As a parent, take the initiative to engage your child in more ‘grey area’ conversations. Local schools are often known for having a rigorous and structured learning approach. There are numerous tests and a great deal of homework, which requires parental input. On the other hand, international schools may appear to take a more ‘relaxed approach,’ but they strive for a more self-motivated learning style with breadth and depth. There will be homework; of course, the work set may well be more research, projects, and evaluation. An international school will usually put more emphasis on inquirybased learning. With aims at fostering independence and independent thought, students are encouraged to question, challenge and research. As a result, students acquire skills with which to face the future. After a detailed analysis of the pros and cons, I would not rule out that Parents try their very best to provide the best education to their kids. Still, the kids themselves decide their future. In India, despite fewer facilities and not so good education system, many kids soar the highest skies of a successful career, and kids with ample wealth and prosperous schools can’t make their lives worthy. In Hong Kong, you have quite a knowledge sea to explore, and helping hands are available in the form of private education learning centers, web portals, child education consultants, and of course, the very family friends for additional information. So, think well and decide your child’s future accordingly, as per the child’s capabilities and interests. Don’t force them just for the sake of family reputation or prestigious issues. Healthy comparison is good, but it becomes a burden for innocent kids if it takes a negative role. PAKISTAN’S LEADING ACTRESS

HK’S BUSINESSMAN & CRICKET FANATIC.

Exclusive Interview with Pakistan’s leading Actress & Model Jia Ali and Cricket fanatic and successful Hong Kong businessman Imran Idrees. The couple married recently in Pakistan.

ia Ali is a Pakistani actress and model. She is known for her roles in dramas Band Khirkyon Kay Peechay, Hum Teray Gunahgaar, Pukaar, and Meer Abru. She has played many Drama and Movie roles and was nominated in 2017 for the 3rd Galaxy Lollywood Awards for the Best Performance in a Negative Role in Saya e Khuda e Zuljalal. The Marriage Ceremony of the Pakistani couple took place recently at Badshahi Mosque in Lahore. The couple shares a fantastic aura that will make anyone optimistic about their love life.

We recently had an interview with the amazing couple on a zoom call. The interview went as follows: 1

Mr. Imran Idrees, please tell us more about your love-to-marriage story with Jia?

Imran started first, “Our love story was all planned by Allah, and Allah himself did everything in his destiny. You won’t believe it but huge credit for our love story’s beginning goes to social media. I knew about the famous, beautiful, and talented Jia Ali but never had expected we would someday get married. I had invited many known celebrities from Pakistan to come to Hong Kong to attend sports and performing arts events, and Jia Ali was one of them. Jia then replies, saying that the offer was with absolute perfect words and respect which she got attracted to hence exchanged numbers with Imran since she wanted to check out Hong Kong too. When Imran came back to Pakistan and got back in touch with Jia, that’s where the romantic relationship kicked off. We chatted just like good friends for a while and after some time our conversation and relationship grew further, and we both started talking to each other regularly. I had to move back to Pakistan due to my mother’s illness, and after moving back to Pakistan, we spoke and planned to meet. So, I met Jia personally and headed straight to her and made my marriage proposal. I was introduced to immediate family members

and close friends that day; my heart was pounding left, right and center. But sure, I think she could read and see my heart, and there came an immediate, YES I WILL from Jia.”

2

Ms. Jia Ali, will you consider working in Hong Kong or China movie industry if you get any offers?

Jia, looking super excited, said, “I would love to work for Chinese films, and my dream is to do one of those actionpacked, intense fighting Chinese movies. I’m glad Imran would support me to achieve all my dreams even after marriage. I’m also a teacher at the Art of Living Institute. Gulzar Ji invited me in the early ’20s to be a part of an event in India, but somehow the event did not materialize. But, the feeling of going close enough to Bollywood was exhilarating and precious for me. Similar

is the feeling for China and Hong Kong, and I’m sure real talents will automatically make their spaces in these developed nations. Hong Kong, here I come...Imran added, don’t worry, I will teach you a bit of Cantonese also, be ready to eat Noodles all the time during your movie shoots in Hong Kong.”

3

Mr. Imran Idrees, as we know that you will be permanently settled in Pakistan with Jia, so what are your future plans related to Hong Kong?

Imran said, “As of now, I have wrapped up my business and moved permanently to Pakistan owing to the illness of my mother but, I will be back in business in Hong Kong in a couple of months, and now my army is stronger with my better-half Jia by my side. He smiles, looking at Jia, and says, now I have my Jia with me to

support me with all my social work and sports-related business activities. I will put in more effort to make it better in the field of trading and sports in Hong Kong.” Jia added here, “I am also working to develop my brand of herbal products (Jia Cares). Imran and I will also be working together to build this brand in Pakistan, Hong Kong, and other parts of the world. I am very optimistic that with a lovely, caring, supporting, and visionary partner by my side, very soon, you will see both of us doing a lot of new things pertaining to social work alongside our business ventures in Hong Kong tied up with its backend support in Pakistan. Inshallah, you will see both the stars shining again very soon in Hong Kong and all over the world.”

4

Jia & Imran, the age gap between you two is around 5 years. Mr. Idrees, you are 43 years and Ms. Ali is 48 years, how will you overcome this sort of taboo in your religion while living in Pakistan? Jia started first and said, “Imran, let me handle this question. Now in this century,

even in Pakistan, there are no age differences in marriage. I feel that age is merely a number, and love is eternal and goes on to infinity. When two souls get attracted towards each other, it sees no age, caste, religion, and barriers. We both have been accepted, wholehearted by our friends, relatives, community leaders, media, and fans. Initially, I did have mixed feelings about our age difference, but then every time I had a doubt, my heart said, Go on Jia! He’s the man your soul has been waiting to connect with for your entire life. I did have my ups and downs in my relationships in the past, but this time the feeling was something else, which I cannot even describe. I was getting pulled towards Imran like a magnet, and I just went with the flow. I want to thank Imran for always supporting and motivating me to stay positive on this age thing, and it helped me overcome even the slightest worry I had in my heart about the age. I want to teach the younger generations about real issues and not petty ones and how to face them by setting an example.

5 Ms. Jia Ali, what are your

upcoming projects this year? Would you like to

C H I T - C H A T

share some information on this, please? Jia, with excitement, started, “I have recently signed quite a few projects for pakistani channels and also some new episodes with Meer Abru. Frankly speaking, 2022 is looking very promising on the acting front. My fans and audience will see me very soon, not just acting but also as an enterprising lady doing my brand of Herbal products alongside my respectable husband, Imran. Also, don’t you want to see me in Hong Kong movies in 2022? Jia laughed and said, “Gary, get set and be ready. Now Jia and Imran are going to be on a rollercoaster ride holding hands and taking up things joyfully in many ways.”

6 Imran & Jia tell us

five strengths and weaknesses of each other? I am sure many of Jia’s fans in Pakistan would like to know the real Jia.

Jia said, “Wow, this is an interesting question, I am ready with my ears wide open, and I would personally like to record this. Jia giggled and said, go on, Imran.” Imran started immediately, “Jia’s strengths are, she never gives up, she always prefers to be happy and optimistic, she believes in Humanity.” Imran added further to the list, “Jia has a fantastic charisma, and she creates positive vibes that helps her remain calm that even motivates others and she always supports me with all my thoughts, ideas, plans and guides me with her great advice. On asking about Ms. Jia’s weakness, Mr. Imran says, “She doesn’t really possess a lot of weaknesses but only strengths. However, she does have one weakness, that she trusts people very fast.” After taking a gentle pause, Imran added, “Gary, I forgot one most important weakness of hers, she is very talkative and won’t let anyone else speak” Imran

laughed all out after saying this and looking at Jia said, “Please, Jia, I love this weakness of yours the most, so keep talking with me for my entire life, your voice is magic.” Now, Jia, it’s your turn to take the harness in your hands. To this, Jia said, “Imran, has so many strengths, but the ones I admire the most are, he is Faithful & very Honest, Respectful nature, Health-conscious, Nature-loving, Animal Loving and his biggest strength for him is that always his family comes first, ahead of everything else. Just imagine Imran deciding to move back to Pakistan for his mother, forgetting about all his work, business, cricket, literally leaving everything behind in Hong Kong just for his family. When it comes to his weaknesses, I really can say this with hand to my heart; there is nothing so I can think of. He is just a perfect man, a good human being and a god-gifted child.”

7 Ms. Jia Ali, any plans of

joining politics in the near future with husband Mr. Imran Idrees?

Jia said, “Actually, Imran has never really been into professional politics, rather has been more of a social / Humanitarian work person.” Imran added here, “I work for Humanity, and getting a high post or reputation means nothing to me. I want to serve the people of my country and their betterment. I have one life to live, and it’s my moral duty to do something for my community and people. My involvement with Tahreeke-Insaf is also from the social work and community perspective and nothing to do with Politics. However, Jia and I are solid supporters of Imran Khan, and we both strongly believe in his national fundamentals and beliefs to bring our nation to another level on a global platform.”

8 Mr. Imran Idrees, can you

tell me more about how you feel, with the fact of

living with and married to a celebrity star? Imran said, “Stars don’t always end up with other stars. Famous people always want to get away from the limelight and media focus to live a normal and peaceful life. Just imagine both of us are from the fields of media and public dealing, and we would be out and under pressure most of the time, with our work and career. With both of us from another field, we would have a very balanced and peaceful living for each other. I feel blessed all the time. I have already attended many interviews, tv shows with Jia after our marriage news broke out in the news. So, I am also kind of getting used to the Media things again, Imran Praised Jia for all the hard work she has done to be called a celebrity actor in Pakistan” Imran smiles with pride.

9 Ms. Jia Ali, Hong Kong-

based Pakistanis would love to see you in Hong Kong soon. When do you plan to visit HK?

Jia said, “Inshallah very soon, as this pandemic comes to an end, I am eagerly waiting and would love to visit Hong

Kong along with my beloved Husband Mr. Imran Idrees.”

10 Jia & Imran, this question

is for both. Was marriage planned for this year or it happened all of a sudden? describe to us the series of events taking you both towards the big day of marriage.

Jia replied, “Imran and I began to get very close after we got in touch through social media. We used to chat a lot during the night-time, often as other couples do. During the initial days after we started knowing each other, I was going through a bad phase in my life, and Imran was always there for me, all the time, literally 24x7, I would say. One fine day, after Imran had moved back to Pakistan, he surprised me by coming to my home and asked for my hand from my family. I was so damn shocked and

w w w . a d e s i f l a v a . c o m

surprised by this gesture and guts of Imran that I was clean bowled right over there. Imran proposed to me again in front of my family and asked me to be his wife. Our families met each other and accepted us as a couple, and then we moved towards the big day of my life.” Imran added, “due to the ongoing pandemic situation in Pakistan and as a socially responsible citizen of our country, we kept a low-key marriage event with just our close family and relatives. It was not planned for this year or even next year, but sometimes, things happen independently. Allah decides it, and you get carried away. That’s exactly what we both did. We listened to our hearts and moved ahead with the marriage.”

11 Jia & Imran,

will you both be working towards some charity, social benefits, and

community work towards the Pakistani’s living in Hong Kong? Both answered at the same time, “Yes.” Imran said, “We both give immense importance to social work and charity. Imran then said, “Charity is never to be shown in public. My main goal is to teach a person to catch a fish than to give the person a fish.” He then explains how much he is ready to help the people and to see them succeed in their lives. With the above last question, our Interview came to an end, and Gary wished Imran and Jia on behalf of the entire team of A-Desiflava Magazine. Gary said, “Imran and Jia, my entire team and I would like to firstly congratulate you both for a new life looking ahead together with lots of luck, good hopes, togetherness, good memories, a great life, and a successful career ahead. I thank you for taking out your precious time for this Zoom call Interview. I hope to see you both soon in Hong Kong. Maybe, we will soon plan some south Asian events in Hong Kong, where I would like to invite you both, like a couple of guest speakers at this event. May Allah, God, Bhagwaan bless you both with 100 years of togetherness, and then we will do another interview for A-Desiflava magazine when you hit the century of your togetherness.” Imran and Jia both thanked Gary for giving them this opportunity, and the Interview call ended.

We ended our Zoom call with the famous and renowned actress Jia Ali and Hong Kong’s known cricketer and businessman Imran Idrees with our last question. The Interview call was attended, recorded, and drafted by A-Desiflava Magazine intern Alston Vaz. The Interview was organized and conducted by Gary Pardeshi, Chief Editor of A-Desiflava Magazine.

THE MUSIC OF THE SOULS IN HONG KONG In conversation with the founder Mr.Suresh Purswaney. “Founded by Mr Suresh Pursawney over a decade ago , Sur Sadhna is not just a place for music jamming in leisure time. But is a place where the soulful music lovers of Hong Kong follow the principle of devotion and dedication for the saat swar of Indian music, and hence the group befits the name “Sur Sadhna.” It requires the keen interest and punctuality of musically inclined people who sing and inspire the whole group to get versatility in every aspect of music. Suresh Purswaney mentioned to Gary from A-Desiflava Magazine “Before each session, we seek the blessings of Maa Saraswati (known as the goddess of Sangeet) by chanting mantras. After that, we begin with a bhajan to offer our gratitude to God. Only after this do we begin our session.” “All the members are committed to singing in Sur and Taal and take exquisite care to learn the lyrics and conduct themselves with utmost seriousness towards the art of singing. The emphasis

is on learning and improvement. The general environment is for everyone to encourage participation, and it has been seen that the standard of rendition has improved over the years. There is always a very senior musician on the keyboard for accompaniment, a tablanawaz, and some of the members themselves play the harmonium and rhythmic instruments. Sur Sadhna uses excellent audio equipment like multiple microphones, mixers, amplifiers, and speakers.” “In addition to members singing songs of their choice, each session usually has a theme round and healthy competition and prizes. The venue is decorated according to the occasion, whether it be Diwali, New Year, Independence Day, Valentine’s day, or any other event. Almost every month there is a birthday cake to celebrate the birthday of a member. Overall the atmosphere is not only one of serious singing but also of fun and festive.” “Sur Sadhna also actively participates in social events. The team has been invited to perform on Independence day and has sung patriotic songs at

the Consulate General of India in Hong Kong. Our team has also delivered stage performances at the Indian Arts Circle, where the participants were honored with certificates and prizes.” Dr Sutinder Bindra one of the key member’s of the group added “Our group also organizes outdoor activities and get-togethers. These have included a boat trip, an overnight stay at a picnic resort, and a hike and day picnic. This is all thanks to the Purswaney household, where Mr. Suresh leads, improvising & innovating continually and relentlessly. At the same time, his wife Karen and lovely daughters Menka and Karishma support him in organizing games on special occasions and outdoor parties. It is admirable & baffling that every member of this family is well-aligned to serve. The group owes gratitude to Mr. Suresh Purswaney for coordinating all sessions and activities and providing a comfortable venue, infrastructure, and hospitality.” Suresh Purswaney, said “let me introduce our key and most active members of Sur Sadhana. Firstly, introducing myself as the founder and president of our musical group”.

I like signing all types of songs, from my father’s generation to my son’s favorite numbers. In my free time, I love listening to my songs recorded on Smule. My other passion is to play Badminton. These two passion keeps me busy every day.

NIRAL RANPURA SONI

Hi! My name is Niral Ranpura Soni. It was the February of 2020 when I was first introduced to the Sur Sadhna family by a fellow member Mr. Gaurang Soni. I was a bit nervous about singing with the Master Musicians playing the music in the background and all the proficient members of the Sur Sadhna family witnessing your song. But once I started to sing, I was surprised that my song

went so smooth due to the musical vibes present in the atmosphere and the enthusiastic, supportive, and motivating members. We here get together to enjoy and celebrate the aura of the music. At the same time, despite no one judging you, you get to learn so many things from the versatility of each member, including the musicians. We have all become a family now. Along with enjoying music, we also celebrate our musical sessions with the themes of the Indian festivals. We also plan family picnics, hikes, junk boat parties, etc., with the families of the members, and also make sure that music is a part of such gatherings. I am incredibly thankful to Mr. Suresh Purswaney and Mrs. Karen Purswaney for always warmly welcoming us and allowing us to learn, enjoy and cherish every musical evening spent together. Thank you!

VINITH RAO

DR. SUTINDER BINDRA I play the harmonium and I’m an avid singer of ghazals and melodies of fifties and sixties. I have special passion and repertoire for Rafi Sahab songs. I’m one of the most regular attendee and also the amateur sound technician for my team.

I’m a banking professional, and very passionate about old Hindi film songs. Rarely, I would ever sing any songs from after the mid-1980s. I developed this interest in music while listening to songs on Vividh Bharati during my formative years in Kanpur, India. Relatively new to Hong Kong (a little over 5 years), I was introduced to Sur Sadhana by a friend who heard me sing in informal gatherings. Although I’m an untrained singer, I’ve learnt to play the Tabla for many years during my schooling.
