Introduction
shallot plastic bottle plenty of water thats changed every 2-3 days
As part of my biology project, I used vegetative propagation to sprout a shallot bulb. Vegetative propagation is a form of asexual plant reproduction where growth originates from a piece of the parent plant rather than a seed. While soil is an option, placing the bulb in a clear plastic bottle filled with water allowed me to easily monitor root and shoot development as it grew.
Steps of Plantation 1. Prepare the Container Cut a clear plastic bottle to create a small vase or water container that holds the shallot near the top while allowing room for roots below. 2. Position the Shallot Place the shallot bulb in the opening of the container so that its root base (bottom tip) touches the surface of the water without submerging the entire bulb. 3. Provide Proper Sunlight Set the container in a well-lit area with indirect or direct sunlight to encourage healthy sprouting and root growth.
4. Change the water regularly Replace the water every 2-3 days to prevent mold or rot 5. Observe growth Watch the transparent container as white roots extend downward into the water and green shoots begin to sprout upward from the top.
Documentation
Day 9
Day 1
Has started to grow more roots and abit of green sprout
Day 3
still hasn't grown
Day 5
Has started to grow roots
Day 12
The green sprout has grown much more and the roots grew more
Day 14
The green sprout & the roots grew longer
Growth Factors
1. Water Quality & Maintenance: Changing the water every 2 to 3 days keeps it fresh, supplies essential oxygen to the developing roots, and prevents bacterial growth or bulb rot.
2. Water Level: Only the bottom root base of the shallot should touch the water; submerging the entire bulb will cause it to decay.
3. Sunlight Exposure: Adequate sunlight provides the energy needed for photosynthesis, promoting steady green shoot growth.
Tips and Tricks 1. Trim the Top: Gently trim the dry tip off the top of the shallot bulb before placing it in water to help speed up shoot growth.
2.Keep the Base Dry: Make sure only the very bottom root plate touches the water level; if the whole bulb sits in water, it will quickly turn soft and rot. 3.Use Toothpicks for Balance: If the bottle opening is too wide, insert 3–4 toothpicks horizontally around the middle of the shallot to suspend it neatly over the top of the container.
