Eight South Australian artists living with disability or mental health barriers

In the creative world, how does colour inspire you through everyday life?

This year’s Bearded Dragon Gallery

SALA exhibition, titled Colour, incorporates works from eight South Australian artists living with disability or mental health barriers. Each artist uses art as an emotional release and form of self-expression to overcome lived experiences and personal barriers. These artists share a passion for sharing feelings and making connections with others through a visual language.

This exhibition explores how colour is an important part of artistic expression, as it can be used to convey emotions and capture the real or surreal.

In artist Dan Withey’s words, “When I think of colours, it usually takes the shape of its brightest and most pure form. Colour has always been something I have been fascinated with throughout my life and career as an artist. I find it hard to limit my pallet when painting. But I find it fun to challenge myself by working with the limitations of a singular colour and lino prints as a medium lends itself well to conveying a powerful image with a single colour.”

These artists come from different backgrounds and artistic inspiration but have one thing in common – they have a love for art. While some are more established in their careers, we also wanted to give emerging artists an opportunity to showcase their skills and build their confidence. We hope you will embrace them all, in Colour.

Lauren Kathleen (she/her) is an emerging artist from Adelaide, South Australia whose inspiration for her work centres around nature and connection. ‘Small Vessels’ features a body of work exploring relief printing that places elements of nature and the human body together, finding shapes, lines and forms that mimic each other, serving as a reminder of the life that flows within our human vessel.

These pieces are hand printed and presented both as wall hangings on calico, and on thrifted denim jackets, exploring a way to make art wearable, creating a walking exhibition that doesn’t end when the art is taken off the walls.

This work represents a return to nature and a return to self, and encourages us to find pieces of our human forms in even the smallest vessels for life. In a flower, in the ocean, in a tree. In the eye, the hand, the bones. There is a oneness to the world if you choose to look.

Zu design’s SALA exhibition will showcase work responding to the title ‘Considered’. Contemporary jewellers/ makers, highlighting significant skills and the individuality of each piece.

Makers/jewellers are propelled by a curiosity of technique, problem-solving, and making to challenge and extend their skill level. Each piece created informs another, and with each idea, more desire to stretch abilities and build skills. Considered is an exhibition highlighting the diversity of our makers and the unique techniques they have perfected over years of making.

Meandering plants, deep greens and bursts of colour; ‘Foliage’ is an exhibition of landscapes on canvas, boldly painted pots and decorative boxes.

Inspired by the love of gardens and the fascination of the endless variety of foliage, Debby draws from different landscapes and plant types around Australia. With the use of acrylics, stencils and a sense of whimsy, Debby layers shapes and patterns to create a lush and imaginary world.

Mostly known for her colourful and imaginative style, Debby likes to portray fun and happiness through various printmaking techniques and paintings. Primarily a figurative and more illustrative artist, Debby’s work is constantly evolving. Since moving to the Adelaide Hills, South Australia in 2007, an interest in exploring landscapes, abstraction and mixed media has developed. Debby’s appreciation of Australia’s unique countryside and wildlife are a great source of inspiration and is expressed with a sense of imagination and bold design.

After a career as a scientist and geologist, Dave Nettle found himself in an unexpected place in life in 2020battling a brain injury after surgery to remove a tumour. This surreal experience caused him to reflect on his mental health and that of those around him, themes that are reflected in his “Not Alone” photographic exhibition as part of the SALA Festival.

“It was shocking to realise that my mental health post-recovery was better than before my diagnosis.” David said.

“I felt more connected to myself and those around me than I did before, and it made think a lot about mental health and how we need to talk about it more.”

Dave’s street photography depicts human life in an urban landscape and explores the isolation we can feel, even while sharing city spaces.

“Through the camera lens I really see people and I want to express ideas about the city spaces we share and how we connect with each other”.

Dave now spends his time volunteering with homeless organisations, in addition to capturing images of people on the streets of Adelaide.

From delicate earrings to bold statement necklaces, each piece has been meticulously crafted by Julie Frahm.

As an artist who specialises in glass bead jewellery, Julie finds endless inspiration in the intricate patterns and vibrant colours that can be achieved with this medium. Each bead is a tiny canvas, waiting to be transformed into a unique piece of wearable art.

In this exhibition, “Reflections in Glass,” Julie invites you to explore the many facets of her work. From delicate earrings to bold statement necklaces, each piece has been meticulously crafted using a variety of techniques and materials. Some feature intricate patterns, while others showcase the natural beauty of the glass itself. But all of them share a common thread: a deep love for the art of glass beadmaking.

As you peruse this collection, Julie hopes you will find something that speaks to you. Whether it’s a piece that catches your eye or a pattern that resonates with your soul, her hope is that these works will inspire you to see the world in a new way. Because just like the glass beads that adorn these pieces, life is full of light, colour, and endless possibility.

Ross Morgan is an award winning fine artist and illustrator from Adelaide, South Australia. From an early age growing up in the mid–north of South Australia, Ross enjoyed exploring the rural environment filled with creatures, abandoned structures, and objects of yesteryear. He also practiced drawing, painting, and arts and crafts projects encouraged by his mother at the kitchen table. These early experiences have been key in establishing his life-long interest in drawing and painting.

The love of the visual narrative led Ross on the path of wanting to create illustrated books. In 2019 he won the ‘Raising Literacy Australia’s Emerging Author and Illustrator Mentoring Project’. Through this initiative he completed his first illustrated book ‘Molly Moores has a House Like Yours’ written by Kaliah Tsakalidis in 2020. In 2021 he was shortlisted for the SCBWI Australian Picture Book Illustrator Award as Emerging Illustrator and has since been contracted to illustrate a number of books for some of Australia’s leading picture book publishers.

This SALA Exhibition will be a showcase of personal artworks and picture book illustrations. It includes a series of original paintings, drawings and preliminary sketches from recently published picture books, as well as a selection of his books.

Brydie is an emerging artist who takes her inspiration from her great love of animals and nature around her. Photography has been her role for some years and she has also worked with animals in her career. She has based this exhibition on birds of Australia and was driven to start painting birds when she rescued her Galah “ Cosmo”. He’s quite a character around her home that she shares with her partner Mitchell adding cheerfulness and colour.

This exhibition will be her first in the unusual space of a Tailors studio. Mixed amongst the old artifacts and making implements, cloth and cottons, shears and tape measures, it gives light and colour to an otherwise very conservative space.
