Winter in Victor isn’t about retreating; it’s about heading straight for the wild.
From May to October, humpbacks and southern right whales migrate along the Fleurieu coastline, offering some of the best land-based whale spotting in SA. Wander the clifftops, stroll across to Granite Island or head out with Big Duck Boat Tours to whale-spot from a different view.
June brings the Winter Whale Fest — a month-long celebration of marine life, conservation, art and community. There’s nothing quite like drifting off to sleep in your own floating house, then waking to sunshine shimmering on the river and the gentle soundtrack of nature all around you. Our parents are back for another overseas escapade!
After conquering Europe’s cobblestones, schnitzels and those wild Danube sunsets, we traded castles for temples and headed to Southeast Asia for #AdeladyDoesMekong with our friends at Travelmarvel and Phil Hoffmann Travel.
And this time, we took our mums and dads to Vietnam and Cambodia, baby!
From the Danube to the Mekong
If you’ve followed our past Travelmarvel adventures, you’ll know our parents are the real stars. They’ve been mistaken for local celebrities, outdanced us on the deck and both our dads have a knack for befriending anyone within a 10-metre radius.
So after cruising with our parents last year, we thought, why not take them somewhere totally different?
We feasted on flavourful local dishes, sipped Vietnamese iced coffees and basked in the warmth (and occasional humidity-induced frizz) of the mighty Mekong River.
The adventure begins…
Our Travelmarvel Essential Vietnam and Cambodia journey started in Ho Chi Minh City, a place that hits every sense at once. You can explore the famous Cu Chi Tunnels, a network of underground passages used during the Vietnam War which were both powerful and fascinating. Maybe you’d prefer to explore Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon on your own, relaxing, shopping, wandering the streets and jumping on a hop-on hopoff tour to soak it all in. With over 10 million people, this city is buzzing with hidden coffee shops, vibrant markets, modern malls and some seriously delicious restaurants around every corner.
Then it’s all aboard the RV Lotus, which was our floating home for the next seven nights, gliding along one of the most breathtaking waterways on Earth: the Mekong River.

Days are spent waving to fishermen and stopping to explore local markets. Evenings are filled with great company and that beautiful moment when the sun dips low and the whole river turns mango orange!
Nights are spent on Deck Two with quiz nights, talent shows, karaoke and so much fun! The ship “rocks” until
you’re ready to go to sleep. Mama Jules was our biggest party animal and owner of the stage two nights in a row, banging out Shania Twain hits!
ONE OF THOSE SPINE-TINGLING, GOOSEBUMP MOMENTS THAT STAYS WITH YOU FOREVER.
Off the ship, we visited traditional silk weavers, local temples and tiny riverside schools. One of our fave days was visiting one of the biggest Buddhist temples in Cambodia and being blessed by monks. It’s humbling, heart-warming, and one of those rare experiences that makes you stop scrolling, breathe and actually feel.

If you’ve ever dreamt of watching the sunrise over those ancient temple spires — this is it! It’s one of those spine-tingling, goosebump moments that stay with you forever.
One of our highlights and the best way to see both countries was doing the rickshaw, cyclo and tuk-tuk tours — you sit back like royalty while life buzzes around you in a glorious symphony of scooters and street stalls. And it’s perfect for all ages. Our dads loved it!

We can’t talk about this trip without a massive shout-out to Phil Hoffmann Travel. They’ve been our travel partners for years now and they know we love adventure. But we also love a comfy bed, a good cocktail and not having to think about any of the logistics. Like, zero paperwork, please!

Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary
There’s nothing else quite like it… Located in the northern Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola feels almost like someone dropped a piece of Mars into South Australia and sprinkled it with emus, deep valleys, bright orange cliffs and untouched wilderness as far as the eye can see.
And what really puts Arkaroola on the global stage is that it’s one of the best places on Earth for stargazing. It’s considered a Dark-Sky Sanctuary, which means you can see more stars here than almost anywhere on the planet!
But the real-bucket list experience would have to be the Ridgetop Tour. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’ve left Earth and you’re on another planet, this is it! Your guide will drive you up the impossible mountain tracks to the most spectacular campsite, where you’ll dine overlooking the most speccy views and sleep inside a fancy swag on a cloud-like mattress, under a sky full of stars. Not going to lie, this was a bit of a thrill (in a good way)!
But the fun continues the next morning, as you rise early so your guide can take you to another viewing platform to watch the sun pop up over the ranges. This is a real pinch yourself moment!

Coober Pedy
A quirky, underground world… Coober Pedy is an outback treasure and there’s a reason it won hello SA’s Top Tourism Town in 2024. This little desert town, perched along the Stuart Highway, is a bucket-list spot where the landscape looks straight out of a movie (and actually, it is, but more on that in a sec).
Here, homes, shops and even churches are dug deep underground to escape the heat, creating an entire world of little cave-like spaces. Staying in an underground hotel is an experience in itself; it’s cool, quiet and trust me, the kids will think it’s WILD!
Of course, Coober Pedy is known for its opal mining and yep, you can tour the mines and try your hand at finding some yourself. But the town’s magic doesn’t stop there… Once you’ve explored underground, pop above the surface to check out the Moon Plain, which was used as the backdrop for films like Mad Max! And if you want a real taste of the Outback, head out to the Dingo Fence — the world’s longest fence.
There’s so much history in Coober Pedy, which you can of course take in as much or as little as you want. But this town is more than opals and underground hotels; it’s quirky, raw and absolutely unforgettable!

And after a day out exploring, nothing beats pulling up at the North Star Hotel or the Mount Remarkable Hotel, grabbing a drink and a hearty pub meal before having a little look at the small businesses that give this town its character.
For your morning pick-me-up, pop into Over the Edge for great coffee, a bite of homemade cake and maybe a chat with a local or two.
Melrose is also a hiker’s paradise. You can pop on your sneakers and head through Mount Remarkable National Park to explore trails, rugged gorges, native forest and stunning lookout points that showcase the beauty of the Southern Flinders Ranges.
For families, the Melrose Caravan and Tourist Park is a fantastic base with shaded sites and the Flinders Ranges practically at your doorstep! You can also stay in one of the town’s gorgeous stone cottages or boutique accommodations.

Out where the bitumen road ends and the red dirt really starts to show off, you’ll find one of South Australia’s most iconic outback pit stops, the Innamincka Hotel.

The Pink Roadhouse is a vibrant stop that’s become part of many travellers’ journeys.
Well worth the stop
This is a must-visit for travellers heading to Uluru or the Simpson Desert.
More than just a place to refuel, it’s a general store, post office, mechanic, cafe, accommodation and information hub.
Visitors can stay at the caravan park or in one of 11 cabins, stock up at the store, send a postcard stamped from Oodnadatta or get help if their car is playing up. It’s a lifeline for travellers on remote roads.
“We want people to start or end their journeys along the Oodnadatta Track in Oodnadatta. It doesn’t count if you never make it here!” Joe laughs.
The people behind the pink
For Joe and Jess Calvert, it all started in March 2024 while living in Port Augusta.
The previous owner mentioned they were selling and asked if Joe knew anyone interested. “And I said ‘Well yeah… us!’” says Joe.
Six months later, they’d packed up their kids, Lily and Toby, and moved to Oodnadatta. Since then, baby Florence has joined the adventure.
“We love the sense of community out here and the freedom it gives our kids,” Jess says. Joe continues, “In the city, you can be surrounded by millions of people and still feel really alone. But in the bush, you’re never alone”.
Today, Joe and Jess are focused on making The Pink Roadhouse the perfect pitstop. “Being a young family ourselves, we want to make it a really family-friendly place and experience,” Joe says.
What’s on the menu?
Anyone passing through knows The Pink Roadhouse’s famous Oodnaburger is a must! “You can be in the middle of nowhere and suddenly see a sign saying the Oodnaburger is only a few kilometres away,” Joe says. “It’s part of what put Oodnadatta on the map.”
Weary travellers will be pleased to know that they take their coffee seriously, too, with a professional barista on deck during peak season.

Coffee in hand, sea breeze in your hair, dolphins in the river and a sunset drink waiting by the water… sounds pretty good, right?
Just 20 minutes from the CBD, Port Adelaide is packed with heritage streets, fascinating museums, giant murals and incredible eats.
We gave ourselves 48 hours to explore this vibrant waterfront playground and discovered there’s a whole lot to love!
Day One Morning:
Wander along the historic Port Adelaide Wharf, before popping into the Visitor Information Centre. Set inside a stunning 1860’s heritage-listed building that once housed customs offices, courts, a police station and even jail cells, it’s
the perfect place to grab local insights before heading out to explore.
Ease into the morning at The Banksia Tree Cafe — a cosy local favourite loved for its welcoming atmosphere and generous brunch plates. Or duck into Mayfair Bakery and Patisserie, where the scent of freshly baked pastries drifting onto the street makes stopping almost impossible to resist.

Once you’re fuelled up, it’s time to dive into the Port’s fascinating history. Join a guided walking tour or grab the Walk the Port brochure and explore at your own pace. Keep your eyes peeled for the famous Wonderwalls murals, where enormous artworks transform historic buildings into a colourful open-air gallery.
Afternoon:
Head back to the Visitor Information Centre and borrow a free bike. It’s an easy ride to the South Australian Aviation Museum and the beautifully restored City of Adelaide Clipper Ship — the world’s oldest surviving timber and iron clipper ship. By lunchtime, you’ll be ready to refuel. Pull up a chair at the Port Admiral Hotel
— a heritage pub known for its impressive gluten-free menu, or head to the newly-renovated Lighthouse Wharf Hotel for a relaxed meal overlooking the Port River.
Spend the afternoon exploring more of the Port’s maritime and transport history at the South Australian Maritime Museum and the National Railway Museum, where fascinating exhibits reveal how shipping and rail helped connect South Australia to the world.
Evening:
As the day winds down, it’s time for sunset drinks. Grab a craft beer at Pirate Life Brewery — famous for its bold brews and buzzing atmosphere.
If gin’s your thing, McGregor & Young specialises in small-batch spirits crafted right here in the Port — so you can try out their award-winning range. Wine lovers can settle in at The Dock Wine Bar, a charming, nautical-themed neighbourhood bar known for its live music and great vibes.
For dinner, take your pick from two flavour-packed options: La Popular Taqueria dishes up authentic Mexican street food bursting with colour and flavour, while Low & Slow American BBQ serves the kind of smoky, slow-cooked meats that dreams are made of.
Before calling it a night, take a stroll past the Port Adelaide Lighthouse. Lit up after dark, it’s an iconic photo spot!

Morning:

Next, take some time to connect with the culture at Yitpi Yartapuultiku, which translates to The Soul of Port Adelaide — a space that celebrates First Nations stories, heritage and connection to Country.
Afternoon:
Continue your adventure in nearby Semaphore, where wide sandy beaches and historic streets create the perfect coastal day out. Browse the boutiques along Semaphore Road or simply wander the foreshore and soak up the sea breeze.
Semaphore’s vintage horse carousel and charming foreshore train are a hit with families, while movie buffs can catch a film at the historic Odeon Star Cinema, which has been screening movies since 1920.
By now, you’ll definitely be ready for lunch! Take your pick from local favourites Barry’s Burgers, Indian Tadka or Skara Greek Street Food, each serving up dishes you’ll want to come back for.
Feeling drawn to the ocean? Book a sailing experience with the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia, charter a yacht with Viking Yacht Charters, or turn up the adrenaline with Wild Water Jet Skis.
Evening:
For dinner, head to the iconic Palais Hotel. An Adelaide institution since 1922, it delivers classic pub hospitality with a relaxed beachside atmosphere.
For one final golden-hour moment, wander along Semaphore Beach as the sun sets over the ocean — the perfect ending to a weekend well spent!

Before you try on that dream dress you’ve had saved to your Pinterest board for years, lock in one crucial detail first to ensure your gown looks and feels exactly as it should: the lingerie underneath it! Alexandra, Director of Alexandra Lingerie, says, “It’s a step most brides overlook”. We sat down and asked her all about finding the perfect lingerie for your perfect bridal body...
Why should lingerie come before the gown?
“A bride usually picks her dress without thinking about the foundation needed underneath to feel lifted and supported. A dress can’t lift and support itself on its own, unless you ask a dressmaker
to include a corset system, which is expensive and not everybody has this skill. Ideally, a bride should come to see us instore with her dress idea and then we can work together to find something that will suit. Once you have that, you can take your bra dress shopping with you!”
What goes wrong when brides leave lingerie until the last minute?
“I see brides who come in two weeks before the wedding and say, I need a bra under my wedding dress. The problem is, I may not have the exact size or shape to suit the dress. If I have your size but not the right colour, I have to order it from overseas, which won’t come in time. Unfortunately, I can’t make miracles happen! Planning a wedding is stressful, so many things can happen that you don’t anticipate. Bras are one of the things you can definitely plan ahead.”
What’s the biggest mistake brides make when it comes to lingerie?
“Idolising a dress without realising it’s not something that will suit their body shape. This doesn’t mean you’re the problem — the dress is. Most dresses, unfortunately, are designed on plastic mannequins that replicate one body type, usually petite and small-breasted. You’re a real person with real flesh and you need to be supported. Lingerie will help reshape
everything to achieve a certain silhouette. You can look fabulous while still being realistic to your body.”
Does a bra change the way a wedding dress looks?
“Different bra designs create different shapes. If you wear the wrong shape — not even the wrong size, just the wrong shape — it won’t suit the dress. You can spend a million dollars on a gown, but the bra underneath changes the look completely.”
When should brides start thinking about their lingerie?
“At least three months before the wedding. That’s the absolute minimum. Dressmakers often send clients to us first, so we can see what’s achievable in their size, then they construct the dress around that. It’s like building a house — you start with the foundation and the walls, and only once the structure is solid do you choose and apply the paint.”

From being invited to the White House to leading a global movement, Taryn knows what's possible when you embrace your purpose — because she's done it.

Where it all began…
In 2013, Taryn shared her take on a before-and-after photo on Facebook. The first showed her at her bodybuilding competition; the second was a more relaxed version of herself a few months later, sitting on a chair in the nude, with a big smile. No filters. No flexing. Just real life.
The post went viral, flipping the traditional transformation narrative
and challenging beauty norms — and that moment became the catalyst for everything that followed.
It led to her first book and the groundbreaking 2016 documentary Embrace, which became one of Australia’s most successful documentaries, earning more than $6 million globally and sparking conversations around the world.

Today, Taryn is a global impact entrepreneur, sought-after keynote speaker, award-winning filmmaker, and bestselling author and founder of the Body Image Movement. Her message has now reached more than 200 million people across 190 countries. She is also the Co-Executive Director of The Embrace Collective which she founded with Dr Zali Yager — a charity dedicated to supporting parents, carers, teachers, coaches and leaders in helping young people build a healthy body image.
In 2022, she released the Embrace Kids film, helping children aged 9 to 14 build healthier body relationships.

Brenton Ragless has one of those personalities you instantly trust. You know the type — calm, friendly, reassuring and never forgets your name. But the best part is, off camera, he’s just as down-to-earth!
A proud Hills local, family man, early-morning swimmer and steam train enthusiast (yes, really), Brenton’s story is deeply South Australian, with a few little detours along the way. We sat down with him to chat about his first TV gigs, favourite family escapes and the allimportant bakery pie debate...
How did your TV career begin?
“Like many good stories, it started with a chance encounter. While working as a media officer with the South Australian
Country Fire Service (CFS), I built strong relationships with the Nine Newsroom. Then came a surprise run-in at Westfield Marion with a senior staffer from the network. A conversation… an application… and I landed the weather presenting role in 2008, before moving to the newsdesk in 2014.”
Favourite holiday destination with the family?
“No passport required. We love our local regions: the Riverland, Flinders Ranges and the South East.”
What do you love doing when you’re not at the news desk?
“You’ll find me either swimming laps with my training mates, followed by a compulsory coffee, or in greasy overalls working on steam trains.”
Team North, Team South, Team East, Team West… or Team Hills?
“Team Hills! It’s a destination in itself — with easy runs to the beach, or a pleasant drive or bike ride deeper into the Hills.”
If you could teleport anywhere in SA, where are you going and what’s for lunch?
“Quorn, without hesitation. First stop: a ride on the Pichi Richi Railway. Second stop: a pub steak.”
And finally… which suburb has the best bakery pie?
“Bake Bakery in Coromandel Valley takes the crown. Especially after a family walk along the Sturt River Linear Park. A pie earned is always a better pie!”

Ten years, ten parties… thousands of lives impacted.
In 2016, we pulled a few tables together, invited our mates, shared a meal and asked a simple question: What if doing something lovely could also do something lifesaving? That was Adelady’s first Longest Table dinner. Fast-forward to 2026 and we’re marking a decade of hosting the annual Adelady and G-Fresh Longest Table in support of The Hospital Research Foundation Group — a milestone shared
by everyone who’s ever attended, donated or spread the word.
That’s the best thing about The Longest Table fundraiser… literally anyone can host their own soiree and make an impact! Across its 13-year history, South Australians (and Australians nationally) have raised $3,975,800 for cancer research through The Longest Table.
Hosting our annual Longest Table has been one of the most gratifying things we’ve done, because the impact is immediate. As The Hospital Research Foundation Group’s dedicated cancer fundraiser, the funds raised make a real difference for South Australians fighting cancer.

A real impact
Over the past nine years, the Adelady community has raised an incredible $644,272 through our Longest Table dinners — with funds transformed into world-class cancer research, cuttingedge equipment and hope through The Hospital Research Foundation Group.
One of the most powerful pieces of equipment we’ve helped purchase sits inside the Basil Hetzel Institute
on Woodville Road: a ZEISS LSM 900 confocal microscope, which allows researchers to optically “slice” through 3D tissue samples, analysing breast cancer cells in their natural environment and seeing cancer in unprecedented detail. This work is led by Professor Michael Samuel, who explains, “The microscope will allow us to picture the cancer cells more accurately within their usual environment and to analyse their behaviour. It gives us accurate information about how the cancer cells behave and how they respond to treatment, to help us improve existing treatments and develop new treatments for breast cancer”.
In simple terms, it means smarter treatments, sooner and better outcomes for women facing breast cancer. Our 2024 Longest Table event contributed $126,000 toward this microscope, with The Group pitching in to fund the rest of its $300,000 cost.

THROW YOUR NEXT DINNER PARTY WITH A SIDE OF WARM AND FUZZIES.
Z Platform at the Centre for Cancer Biology on North Terrace. What’s that you ask? This impressive technology is accelerating CAR T-cell research, where a patient’s own immune cells are engineered to hunt down and destroy cancer cells.
Adelady and G-Fresh contributed $55,000 toward this equipment, helping researchers push the new frontier of breast cancer treatments and other solid tumours. It’s cutting-edge science — made possible by everyday people coming together around a table.
Over the years, The Group has also used our Longest Table fundraising to help drive vital research into breast
density — work that directly contributed to a policy change at BreastScreen SA, ensuring women are now informed of their breast density. Funds have also supported research into chemotherapy-resistant breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer and tumour microenvironments.
Each of these achievements is a powerful reminder of why fundraising like this matters.
What’s next for cancer research?
One of the most exciting areas The Hospital Research Foundation Group is now focusing on is cancer survivorship, by helping people not just survive cancer, but live well after treatment.
ACROSS ITS 13-YEAR HISTORY, SOUTH AUSTRALIANS (AND AUSTRALIANS NATIONALLY) HAVE RAISED $3,975,800 FOR CANCER RESEARCH THROUGH THE LONGEST TABLE.
One powerful example is a new trial tackling a painful nerve condition seen by bowel cancer patients, called chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). It affects more than 80 percent of bowel cancer survivors and until now, has no effective treatment.
Researchers at Adelaide University are trialling an innovative technique that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain. Early evidence suggests it could be life-changing!
Another major focus is precision medicine, where scientists use genetic profiling of tumours to tailor treatments to individual patients. This approach helps doctors predict which therapies are most likely to work, detect recurrence earlier and stay ahead of treatment resistance. Twenty years ago, this technology barely existed. Today, it’s transforming cancer care in real time.

For the caponata:

We’re so incredibly lucky to have access to some of the best fish, crabs, oysters, squid and more — and that’s all thanks to the incredible fishers and distributors who work to safely bring fresh seafood from the ocean to your bellies.
All commercially available seafood from SA waters is safe to eat and unmatched in quality.
To whet your appetite for SA seafood, here are three vibrant recipes using some of the best seafood in the biz…
Blue swimmer crab chilli scramble
Time: 10 minutes Serves: 4
8 free-range eggs
100g cream
40g butter (plus extra for the bread)
400g cooked blue swimmer crab meat
4 thick slices of sourdough
20g chilli oil
Chives, finely chopped to garnish
• Whisk eggs and cream together well.
• In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter with a dash of olive oil. Add in the egg mixture, then stir constantly with a heat-safe rubber spatula.
• After 2 minutes, put the sourdough in the toaster.
• Once the eggs are cooked to your
liking, remove the pan from the heat and add in the chilli oil and crab meat. Fold it through gently (trying not to break up the large chunks of crab).
• Pile the scramble on top of buttered toast, garnish with chives and enjoy!
Eddie’s hot tip: We got our delicious blue swimmer crab from Grandax, a South Australian family-run business that produces and picks ready-to-eat crab meat. The quality is incredible!
SA vongole spaghetti with chilli, garlic, baby capers and lemon
Time: 15 minutes Serves: 4
500g SA vongole
1 red chilli, finely sliced
4 garlic cloves, finely sliced
100g baby capers, drained
2 lemons, zest and juice
100g butter, cubed
200ml white wine
500g spaghetti
1/2 a bunch of chopped parsley
Crusty bread, to serve
• Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Meanwhile, preheat a large fry pan over medium-high heat.
• Add a good glug of olive oil to the pan, followed by the vongole and white wine. Cover with the lid for 1 minute while gently tossing the pan to keep the vongole moving.
• Add pasta to the boiling water and cook as per the instructions on the packet.
• The vongole should be starting to open by now. Add the garlic, chilli and white wine. Toss gently and then allow to simmer gently until the white wine has reduced by half.
• Drain the pasta once cooked, then add to the fry pan with the capers and toss well. Remove from heat and add in the cubed butter. Toss off-heat continuously, allowing the butter to gently melt through the pasta.
• Finish the dish with parsley, lemon zest and lemon juice, then toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper as needed, then serve immediately with crusty bread (to mop up the amazing sauce). Enjoy!
Eddie’s hot tip: Be sure to wash the vongole thoroughly in cold salted water — give them a good rub between your hands to remove any sand.
King George whiting en papillote
Time: 35 minutes Serves: 4
4 King George whiting fillets, deboned
4 medium, par-boiled and cooled potatoes and sliced 1cm thick
3 large heirloom tomatoes
1 head fennel, thinly sliced
1/2 bunch of dill, chopped
1/2 bunch of parsley, chopped
2 lemons, thinly sliced
80g butter
2 large sheets of foil
2 large sheets of baking paper
• Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan-forced. Lay out the foil with the baking paper sitting on top.
• On each piece of baking paper, neatly lay down the sliced potato, followed by fennel, tomato, lemon and then herbs, creating a bed for the fish to sit on.
• Lay two fillets of whiting on top of each vegetable bed with the skin facing
down. Season the fish well with salt and pepper. Lastly, break the butter up over the fish, so that as it melts, it dresses the fish and creates a sauce.
• Fold up the edges of the foil and baking paper, and crimp it closed at the top so it’s well sealed — kind of like you’re making a pasty.
• Place parcels on a baking tray and put into the oven for 20 minutes.
• After 20 minutes, remove from the oven and allow to rest for 5 minutes, keeping the parcels closed.
• To serve, place parcels on a large platter and then open at the table. Finish with a little fresh lemon juice and enjoy!
Eddie’s hot tip: You can adjust this recipe to suit any white fish, just adjust the cooking time.

After 10 minutes, add a packet of Olga’s Fine Foods Chicken Yiros, orecchiette pasta and chicken stock. Stir well, cover tightly with alfoil, then bake until the chicken is cooked through and the pasta has absorbed all the stock. Sprinkle over some grated parmesan and chopped red chilli, and enjoy!

Jonathan Leaney and Anthony Cirocco from AC Designs, alongside Lorenzo Gentilcore of Jaycore Constructions and local trades to transform an empty corner space on Magill Road in a matter of months — and the result is seriously easy on the eyes.
Rich burgundy tones are a romantic nod to Italy, while polished concrete floors, light timber and playful touches of pink keep it modern. But the striking bar is where the real magic happens, and if you can snag the high table beside it, just know you’ve got one of the best seats in the house!
LOUD CONVERSATIONS OVER GENEROUS PLATES AND THE TYPE OF WARMTH THAT MAKES EVERYONE FEEL LIKE FAMILY.
When the restaurant hums with chatter, SA’s favourite wines are poured and classic cocktails are shaken, it’s not hard to see why one “quick drink” may turn into something far more fabulous here.

The Loxton Hotel has officially been named the best regional hotel in SA! This community-owned pub is the definition of heart, proudly supporting local sporting clubs, schools, social groups and not-for-profits.

Celebrating 50 years of Rundle Mall!
Some places feel like they belong to everyone — a welcoming melting pot of people from all walks of life. For South Australians, that place is Rundle Mall.
For generations, it’s been our retail therapy, our meeting point and our favourite place to sit and people-watch. It’s where we lined up for Christmas magic, spent our first pay cheque, or wandered aimlessly on a weekend with nowhere else to be.
This year, Rundle Mall turns 50. And if the last five decades are anything to go by, the next five are going to be just as iconic!
Where it all began
Rundle Mall was once a traffic-filled extension of Rundle Street. But in 1972, then-Premier Don Dunstan made a decision that reshaped Adelaide forever — he closed the street to cars and created Australia’s first outdoor pedestrian mall.
Inspired by European piazzas and designed as a people-first space, the vision was simple: to create somewhere to stroll, gather and connect. For its time, it was revolutionary!
On 1 September 1976, Dunstan arrived by horse and cart to officially open Rundle Mall. Champagne flowed (literally) from the fountain and 10,000 people gathered to celebrate the beginning of a new era in city life.
As current Premier, Peter Malinauskas recently said, “Rundle Mall is the heart of Adelaide. For five decades it has shaped how South Australians shop, gather, celebrate and connect”.
Nostalgic memories
From the elegance of both Adelaide and Regent Arcades to the treasured memories of John Martin’s, Rundle Mall has long been woven into our lives.
There was the Magic Cave in John Martin’s, filled with wide-eyed Christmas wonder; The Myer Centre’s Dazzeland rollercoaster zooming above shoppers; buskers drawing crowds three rows deep; royal visits, political rallies, first jobs and plenty of first dates!
And of course, the Mall’s Balls (officially known as The Spheres... but that’s nowhere near as fun!) Before we all had mobile phones, the Mall’s Balls was the place you arranged to meet your friends.
These aren’t just stores and sculptures, they’re nostalgic milestones we can all relate to.

Mitcham’s 40 year legacy

Four decades, four generations and one very special corner of Mitcham.
This year, Mitcham Square Newsagency celebrates a milestone that’s increasingly rare in retail: 40 years in the same location, owned by the same family, serving the same community.
In an era where small retailers are constantly changing, that kind of longevity says a lot. And when you walk through the doors, it’s easy to see why they’ve stood the test of time.
A family legacy
Many locals know Ben Poland behind the counter at Mitcham Square Newsagency today, but before him the store was run by his parents, Rory and Liz Poland, who purchased the business in 1986.
Back in those early days, the lease with Mitcham Square developer Noel Taplin was famously sealed with little more than a handshake — a reflection of the trust and relationships that helped shape the business.
Now, the next generation is part of the story too, with Ben’s son, Charlie, working in the business and proving to be a chip off the old block!

In February this year, the family said goodbye to Rory, who passed away peacefully at the age of 83. His legacy lives on through the business he helped build and the relationships formed over decades of service.
Four generations of the same family, tied to the same corner of Mitcham. That’s something pretty special!
Evolving with the times
Forty years ago, the scene looked very different: No internet. No news alerts. The newsagency was the place to be!
Retail has changed dramatically since then and Mitcham Square Newsagency has evolved right alongside it.
Today, it’s so much more than papers and magazines. The store has grown into a vibrant retail space filled with
gifts, home fragrances, stationery and everyday essentials. It’s the kind of place where you pop in for a card and leave with the perfect present as well!
And when it comes to cards, this is the place to go. Mitcham Square Newsagency has one of the best greeting card ranges in the area, with thoughtful, funny and beautifully designed options for every occasion.
You’ll also find much-loved brands like Ecoya, Urban Rituelle, IsAlbi and Legami stationery, alongside one of the largest independent ranges of calendars and diaries in South Australia. Supporting South Australian makers and suppliers remains a priority — because being part of the community means backing it.
The heart of Mitcham
What truly sets Mitcham Square Newsagency apart is its connection to the people around it.
They’ve given countless local teenagers their first jobs, watched staff grow up and start families and welcomed back customers who once came in for Pokémon cards and now shop for their own kids. How cool is that?!
Just as important as the products is the service. The team is known for being warm, friendly and genuinely helpful, whether you need the perfect card or a last-minute gift. It’s the kind of place where you come in for one thing… and stay for a chat.
Forty years on, this Mitcham mainstay is proud of its past, proud to still be here and genuinely excited about what’s next.
This is a family business that’s grown alongside the community it serves. And honestly, Mitcham wouldn’t be the same without it.
