hat was the response when we told our parents they were coming to Europe with us. This has been a wild dream of ours for years and we still pinch ourselves that it actually happened!

famous St Stephen’s Basilica Cathedral, the three bridges, the fashion district and the heart of this historic town. Waking up in Vienna was incredible. And because the ship stays there overnight, guests are welcomed off to a terrific Mozart–Strauss concert in a hundred year old palace, taking you back in time. Vienna was everything we’d imagined it to be — grand buildings with gold trimmings, cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and the faint sound of classical music floating in the air. The cruise then glides into Austria’s Melk and Dürnstein, where the hills meet those abbeys you’ve only ever seen on TV, and of course, medieval castles! It’s safe to say that our jaws were on the cobblestone floor for most of the day. Photographer Wayneo could walk to find those outstanding views; or do what Lauren’s mum, Julie, did and taste Rabbit Shit: a local apricot brandy wrapped in chocolate. You do you!

In Salzburg, the highlight had to be visiting the iconic Sound of Music church in Mondsee. As we stepped inside the very chapel where Maria and Captain von Trapp were married, we were absolutely jumping out of our skin with excitement and singing The Hills Are Alive the whole way home. We then joined a guided walking tour through old town Salzburg, past those insanely-cute pastel‑coloured baroque buildings, popping in and out of cafes and shops by the riverbank. On board From the get‑go, life on ship was seamless. We enjoyed eight breakfasts, plus the seven lunches and seven dinners which had soft drinks, beer and local wine included. The Travelmarvel ship was flawless. Every time you’d return to your room, it was perfectly cleaned with fresh sheets and towels, and even your PJs were folded. The service was exceptional the entire time! The sun deck became a favourite spot for a hot choccy in the afternoon autumn sun, planning the following day’s adventures. When night hits, they bring out entertainment with local performers.

One story that has stayed with her is caring for Demi and Adrian through both the heartbreaking stillbirth of their daughter, Charlotte, and later, the joyful birth of their rainbow baby, Archie. “Their highs are our highs and their lows are our lows too,” Amy reflects.

hat’s right, from TV screens to the big stage and now into the hearts of little readers, Channel 9’s Jessica Braithwaite is embracing a new creative adventure by co-authoring a children’s book! Written alongside her beautiful friend Rebecca Ralfe, Whatever the Weather We’re in This Together is the cutest, most joy-filled story of nature, love and life written for children aged 1 to 6. Using rhyme, warm-hearted storytelling and absolutely gorgeous illustrations by Laura Bee, the book is as comforting as a warm hug on a stormy day. Under an umbrella, I got the low-down on Jess’ new baby…

What’s the message behind the story? “I hope to spark wonder and joy through every season — rain, hail or shine! On a deeper level, the book teaches kids that

they are loved unconditionally, no matter what life throws at them. Even the rainiest days can bring joy… who doesn’t love jumping in muddy puddles!”

What did you love most about writing this book? “The best part was writing with my dear friend Rebecca Ralfe. We’ve been friends for nearly two decades — and even though we live on opposite sides of the country, we’d send ideas back and forth over email, really deliberating over every word. This book is her baby too.”

Finding the perfect illustrator took nearly six months — but it was worth the wait. Tell us about Laura… “Laura captures the beauty of nature and the love of families so empathetically. When the first illustrations came in, I was blown away — she brought our words to life in a way I never imagined.”

Were your own children the first test audience? “They love making the whoosh sounds of the wind and the rumbles of the thunder. My daughter is obsessed with the illustrations and asks to look at them over and over again.”

For anyone dreaming of writing a children’s book, what advice do you give them? “It’s a tough industry to crack. My advice is to build personal connections — with writers, illustrators, even local book lovers. It’s through these connections that the path starts to take shape.” This book is a gentle reminder that just like the weather, life may be unpredictable, but with the right people by your side, you’re never facing it alone. Their stories are inspiring, heartbreaking and unforgettable — often all at once. But behind every life changed is something powerful: research, care and funding made possible by The Group. To celebrate 60 years of care, we want you to meet a couple of the people whose lives have been transformed by The Hospital Research Foundation Group, and one of the researchers who continue to inspire us every single day.

Trish Fuss Only 46 when first diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, Trish’s was stage four and had spread to her lymph nodes — a scary prognosis. Her treatment included a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation, as well as a targeted therapy drug that was only possible thanks to research. And now, Trish calls herself a cancer thriver and oozes positivity, even though she still lives with side effects from her treatment. “Having cancer and the treatment that goes with it, there are always side effects. Because I had lymph node

removal, I have lymphedema in my left arm, which means my body can't release fluid like it should,” says Trish. “I also have neuropathy from the chemo, so that means I have nerve issues all down my left leg. Some days I can't feel my foot, some days I'm in so much pain, but that's the price we pay to survive.” But that doesn’t stop Trish from throwing herself into her fundraising and advocacy work, and around the dance floor at our annual Longest Table event! In addition to working full-time, she hosts her own Longest Table dinner every year for The Hospital Research Foundation Group’s cancer research; and she’s also a consumer advocate for the Centre for Cancer Biology to help guide researchers. “I say to my researchers, ‘Don’t think cure, think survival’. Cancer is never going to stop, but if we can make everyone a survivor or a thriver like me, that's all we wish for.” ADELADY 61

Adela Tolic Becoming a mum was always the dream for Adela, but one that seemed heartbreakingly out of reach after being diagnosed with chronic kidney disease as a teenager. She lives with just one kidney that functions at only 30 percent, so pregnancy carries serious risks. But under the incredible care of esteemed nephrologist Professor Shilpa Jesudason, whose work in women’s kidney health is supported by The Hospital Research Foundation Group, Adela became a mum not once, but twice! “When I first saw Dr Shilpa, she talked me through all the risks, including complete kidney failure and even the need for a transplant,” she says. “It was very high risk. After a lot of discussion, my husband and I decided to take a leap of faith. Not having kids was not an option.” In her third trimester she developed hydronephrosis — a condition where her kidney swelled to double its normal size. But with her expert care team, Adela gave

birth to a healthy baby boy, Amir. And a few years later, defying the odds again, she welcomed her second child, Nadia. “I don’t think I would have been able to become a mum without Dr Shilpa and her research, because there were no cases like mine. I had to take that leap and hope for the best.”

Dr Brenton Hordacre He’s a physiotherapist with a PhD in neurorehabilitation — yes, super smart! But he’s mostly passionate about helping people recover from stroke, brain injury and other neurological conditions. In 2023, Brenton was awarded a grant from The Hospital Research Foundation Group to run a unique boot campstyle rehabilitation program for people recovering from stroke, to help improve movement in their arms and hands. It was so successful, that people were travelling hours from the country just to attend! And the results were beyond great — improving people’s upper limb movement nearly three times greater than typical rehab programs. Plus it was free to attend, because it doubled as a training

ground for University of South Australia physiotherapy students. Now, The Group has provided Brenton with a new grant to run the program in regional areas. “It’s super exciting for us to be funded by The Hospital Research Foundation Group to be able to upscale what we do here and take it out into the country for people in need,” he said. “We know from the data that the prevalence of stroke is greater in rural Australia. Perhaps of greater concern, South Australia has two major hotspots, being the Barker and Gray Federal electorates, that rank second and ninth nationally for stroke prevalence.” It’s these stories of survival, and those searching for better care and treatment options, that inspire us to support an organisation that we are so in awe of. Spanning generations At Calvary North Adelaide, many know “Gran”, aka Liz Mazzei, as the longestserving staff member in SA. At 17, Liz trained at Calvary North Adelaide for nursing and midwifery, and on graduation, Liz moved interstate, returning to Calvary in 1969. Liz still works part-time mentoring graduate nurses. That’s more than 56 years of dedication! For parents, updating guardianship preferences is vital to avoid unintended consequences. A few important things to keep in mind are: keep a detailed record of finances as this will often assist; don’t transfer or hide any assets, as these actions can be reversed; and consider interim agreements which will be in place while you negotiate the final outcome. “Mediation is often quicker and less costly than litigation (and it also doesn’t require face-to-face contact with your ex-partner). As the proud host of the inaugural GAIL conference in 2013, Scotch has again rolled out the welcome mat for international students in 2025.

Committed alliance Formed in 2013, GAIL is a close-knit alliance of eight independent, progressive schools that are geographically and culturally diverse, but united by a shared educational philosophy. These schools aren’t just preparing students for the future, they’re empowering them to shape it. Member schools include Scotch College Adelaide, Woodstock School (India), Prestige College (South Africa), Robert Gordon’s College (Scotland), Kimball Union Academy (USA), Kristin School

Amazon classroom One of the highlights of GAIL 2024 was the student conference in Peru, where 12 students and three staff members from Scotch College Adelaide travelled to Puerto Maldonado in the Amazon Basin for a week-long conservation program. Immersed in the biodiversity of the rainforest, they encountered extraordinary wildlife and learned about powerful sustainability initiatives. The group continued on to Cusco, where they explored the majestic Incan ruins, including the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu.

Sport and culture Closer to home, a delegation of 32 Year 6 Scotch students and five teachers visited Kristin School in New Zealand for a cultural and sporting exchange. Over six fun-filled days, students enthusiastically competed in soccer, basketball, hockey and netball. Beyond the sporting fields, they embraced hands-on activities such as rock climbing and enjoyed cultural immersion at a local Maori community centre. These exchanges brought classroom learning to life for students and teachers alike.

Barnda, Beerenberg and Barossa kilpatrick oysters 1 dozen Barnda by the Bay Oysters, from Smoky Bay 100ml Beerenberg Australian Tomato Sauce 300ml Beerenberg Worcestershire Sauce 200g Barossa Fine Foods Bacon, finely sliced • Pre-heat your oven to 200°C (fan-forced). • Combine the bacon, tomato and Worcestershire sauces in a mixing bowl, along with a good amount of cracked black pepper and mix well. • Add roughly 1 tbsp of the bacon mixture to each oyster. • Place in the oven for 9–11 minutes (allow the bacon to caramelise slightly). • Serve on a bed of rock salt with lemon slices and enjoy them warm. Eddie’s hot tip: On your oven tray, crumple a large sheet of foil that you can press your oysters onto to stop them tipping over and all the deliciousness falling out!

Venus Bay prawns with salsa rosso, and a fennel and citrus salad 1 dozen large Venus Bay prawns For the salsa rosso: ½ cup semi sundried tomatoes, finely chopped ½ cup roasted red capsicum, finely chopped ½ tin whole San Marzano tomato, finely chopped 1 tsp Bippi Italian Style Chilli, optional ½ cup high quality olive oil Zest and juice of 1 lemon For the salad: ½ head of fennel, finely sliced 1 orange, segmented ¼ cup dill, picked ¼ cup parsley, finely chopped

¼ cup mint, finely chopped Olive oil White balsamic vinegar, to taste • Preheat your oven to 200°C. • Combine all the ingredients for the salsa rosso in a mixing bowl, give it a good mix and adjust the seasoning with salt and lemon juice if needed. • Combine all the ingredients for the salad in a mixing bowl. Dress with olive oil and white balsamic, toss to combine. • Butterfly the prawns by cutting them from the leg side all the way through to the back shell, without cutting all the way through. Remove the vein and lay out flat on an oven tray, then dress with olive oil and salt. Bake for 4–6 minutes. • Once just cooked through, lay the prawns out on a platter, then scatter with little dollops of the salsa rosso, followed by the salad. • Serve with a wedge of lemon and enjoy!

Coorong Mulloway with romesco sauce and asparagus 2 fillets of Coorong Mulloway, about 240g–250g each 1 jar romesco sauce 2 bunches of asparagus, bottom stem removed, chopped into 4 pieces 2 lemons ¼ cup cubed butter Olive oil

to turn brown, then squeeze in the juice of 1 lemon and take the pan off the heat. Allow to sit for another minute or so — the lemon juice and butter will create a sauce, and the lemon juice will stop the butter from browning further. • Remove the fish from the pan and allow it to rest for 2–3 minutes. Leave the pan off the heat, allowing the asparagus to continue cooking with the residual heat. • On a platter, smear out the romesco sauce and place the fish on top. Then scatter with the asparagus and spoon over the butter and lemon sauce. • Garnish with some fresh dill and a wedge of lemon. Eddie’s hot tip: Have your fishmonger portion and prepare the fish for you. If you can't get Coorong Mulloway, you can substitute this recipe with any SA fish — there is so much out there and it’s all delicious! • Preheat a stainless steel pan over high heat. • Add a touch of olive oil to the skin of the fish, along with a good pinch of salt. Once your pan is very hot, add a touch of oil to the pan also. • Place the fish skin side down (careful, she's hot!), and turn the heat down to medium. Cook the fish for 4–5 minutes on the skin side, before gently turning over to cook on the flesh side. • After 1 minute, add the chopped asparagus and butter. • Allow the butter to foam up and begin

Step 1: picked with love Once a year, all the fruit is hand-picked from their very own orchards.

But there was always something missing. “I have begged the brands I sell at Alexandra Lingerie for years to make more of what my customers need: the size range, the materials, the support level. I got sick of waiting and I realised I would have to do it myself and create the perfect bra through my own brand, Alexandra V Paris! I knew what I needed and have spent three years finessing the details to create exactly what no one else would even try,” says Alexandra. Like any good bra, it all starts with support — something she was lucky enough to find plenty of in France.

“I’ve been thinking about creating my own brand for five years, but got serious three years ago. I sourced an amazing manufacturing liaison and stylist in France, and she held my hand through it all, making sure this bra had all the right people involved. I also did an intensive bra construction tutorial in France with the woman who is now our patternmaker, and I’ve been doing all my own fabric sourcing by going to fairs and collecting samples, to find the perfect materials and components for the bra.” It took four rounds of Alexandra sampling the bra, and then another round in other sizes that they tried on their customers — the benefit of having a network of models at their fingertips! Now, Alexandra’s first design through Alexandra V Paris is finally here in sizes 8GG-8JJ, 10G-10J, 12FF-12HH and 14FF14H. Named Raillure (a happy accidental Australian take on the French word rayure, meaning stripes), this range is only the beginning.
