Bigger and better

WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Wayne Pearson

The queen of big boobs has moved into her new digs, and it’s twice as nice!

Our go-to expert in all things boobs, Alexandra Vaissière of Alexandra Lingerie, has been very busy over the last year. You’ll still find her in the Adelaide Arcade, but now, she’s in a space that’s twice as big. You know what that means — a bigger range of beautifully supportive bras in sizes D all the way through to K!

For our curvier Pineapples, this store is an absolute godsend with their huge selection of lacy and racy bras and bodysuits (wink wink), sports bras, everyday t-shirt bras and bathers. And, if you’re glancing down at your chest thinking, “My boobs aren’t big enough,” you might be surprised!

“A lot of women who think they're smaller than a D haven’t actually been properly measured and are wearing the wrong size — that’s why we invite everyone into our store, so we can make sure you’re in the most supportive bra,” smiles Alexandra.

And it’s not just the store that continues to expand — Alexandra is sharing her expertise with newly welcomed team members. There are now multiple fitters available at any time (each with the knack of putting you at ease while they fit you up), and much larger fitting rooms to make it a comfy experience all round. For mamas juggling a pram and a new cup size, there’s also a double fitting room so you can spread out.

Alexandra carries a huge range of styles and brands because she knows that just as every pair of boobs is different, so is everyone's personal style. “I haven’t met a pair of boobs I couldn’t fit, and if I don’t have your size, I can order it in from the best luxury European brands — simple! I love helping women to feel glamorous, beautiful and strong. This work truly lights me up,” Alexandra says, shining.

We’re always so focused on showing ourselves some self-love with a massage or a mani-pedi. Why not do your boobs a favour and pay Alexandra Lingerie a visit to get yourself a new silky support system, too?

We’ve all fallen for the fastfashion thing, but with more mature eyes on quality over quantity, we’re turning to beauties like Amber Jasmine.

This SA business offers casualwear, activewear and dresses with a difference. Designer and owner Ali Akbar is focused on ethical labour and sustainability, which also means incredible quality for us! From sketching to design, patterns, fitting, sampling and overseeing production, Ali is as hands-on as it gets with each creation. The father of five picked his two oldest daughters’ middle names for the brand — putting the fam in family-owned.

Here are five things you should know about one of Adelaide’s loveliest new brands…

1. SUSTAINABLE IS FASHIONABLE The beauty of Amber Jasmine is that Ali only uses high-quality fabric in every pair of seamless leggings, sports bras, raglan jumpers, fitted or relaxed joggers. “Our Selene range of ribbed casualwear is incredibly comfortable and breathable, making it good for hot or cold weather,” Ali says.

And they’re comparatively less expensive than some of the big names in activewear. “A lot of work goes into each piece. We keep production quantities low, so you won’t see everyone else wearing it and we’re not mass-producing or ending up with wasted stock,” Ali says.

2. PEOPLE ARE KING It’s important to know how things are made and Ali’s all about the people behind his clothes. “We’re in control of everything, and while some of the production happens overseas, I only use close contacts, so I know exactly where the fabric is from, what’s happening with the production and that it’s all being done ethically.”

3. PICK YOUR VIBE Hot pink, sunset peach, burnt orange, raspberry, bubble gum, lavender, merlot… that’s just a taste of some of the deliciousness on offer. “We’ve got plenty of vibrant and more muted colours, so it appeals to both young and old,” Ali says.

4. NO OSFA We proudly celebrate all body shapes and sizes, and we love brands that do the same! Amber Jasmine’s outfits range from size XS to XXL and a perk of being hands-on with production means they can even make garments to order. 5. BIGGER PICTURE When Ali came as a refugee from Afghanistan at just 14, he knew he wanted to embrace a creative career. “I got into fashion at a young age, listening to my mum and sisters talk about styles, fabrics, trends. Mum was a good tailor and I learnt from friends about the technical side.”

He also wanted to ensure his business would give back. “Buying from us, you’re contributing to a small, local business, but our profits also help people in need in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” Ali says.

You can check out the Amber Jasmine range online, and keep your eyes peeled for a bricks and mortar store soon. A purchase from here will leave you feeling great, well after the shopping buzz has worn off.
