TRAVEL: SEQUOIA LODGE

WORDS AND PHOTOS Mish & Kirk The brand new Sequoia Lodge will whisk you away to a place where luxury meets secluded nature.

T

here aren’t many places where you fall asleep to panoramic views of millions of stars in the sky and wake to a fiery sunrise over the Adelaide Hills, perched up above the clouds... bliss! With each suite offering incredible views of the Mount Lofty Ranges, a cosy fireplace and relaxing bathtub, there are few reasons why you’d want to leave your room — until you hear about all of the experiences included in your stay, that is! If you choose, you can spend a whole afternoon sipping the complimentary sparkling wine, enjoying a cheese platter with produce sourced from the surrounding local regions and catching glimpses of our Australian wildlife from the comfort of your private balcony.

THERE ARE FEW REASONS WHY YOU’D WANT TO LEAVE YOUR ROOM.

There’s also an extensive range of onsite experiences that are included as part of your stay, and your personal host will help you plan your full Sequoia journey however you please. If you want to take it slow, begin your day with a sunrise yoga session or relax with a yummy, freshly-squeezed juice or coffee in the private on-site hot pools overlooking the Piccadilly Valley. The artesian hot pools are fed by the mountain’s natural springs, which run beneath the grounds of

Sequoia and are heated up to 40 degrees. Your host will help you book in a private time slot for this unforgettable experience — we loved it so much that we had a second booking arranged for the following morning, too! If you feel like stretching your legs, you can join the morning guided nature walk along the Heysen Trail or go for a wander along the many trails that you can access directly from the lodge. We highly recommend following it up with a dip in the heated infinity pool afterwards! When it comes to food and wine, you’re truly spoilt for choice. There are fine dining options on your doorstep at Hardy's Verandah — we indulged in the sevencourse degustation dinner and wine pairing menu and almost had to be rolled back to our room. Alternatively, you can venture out to one of the many nearby wineries or restaurants in the Adelaide Hills. Treat yourself or a loved one — Sequoia is all kinds of special! @sequoiaaustralia sequoialodge.com.au 3 -

TRAVEL: CLARE VALLEY

NOT ONLY IS IT A TREAT FOR YOUR BELLY, YOUR HEART AND MIND CAN ALSO JOIN THE FUN.

Photos: SATC.

Pop the bubbles! WORDS Em Worthington The winner is… Clare!

W

hile not surprised, we’re jumping for joy that Clare was recently crowned in the 2021 South Australian Top Tourism Town Awards. This gorgeous gal and true all-rounder sits in the glorious Clare Valley and took out the voters’ choice, notching up over 10,000 nods from across the globe. Less than a two-hour drive from Adelaide, the region stretches from Tarlee up to Burra and is home to a few of SA’s most iconic names in food and wine — some that are celebrated worldwide. Whether it’s a day trip, a weekend to recharge or a long, leisurely getaway, the Clare Valley will always delight with over forty cellar doors and boutique wineries, award-winning restaurants, artisan cafés and some of the most gifted producers going. Not only is it a treat for your belly, your heart and mind can also join the fun as

you soak up charming villages, remarkable vistas, history, art, walking and biking adventures, all while meeting salt of the earth people who offer up genuine country hospitality. There’s so much to explore, let’s start with a few pared-back highlights — nature, history and jaw-dropping scenery... Walk this way – Strap on your boots to get down and dirty with the Clare Valley Short Walks. There are options for all kinds of trekkers — from one hour family-friendly strolls right through to serious slogs of four hours. And to sprinkle in a little indulgence, some have stops for a bite and a drop — it’s all about balance! Lay your eyes on spectacular sights, including Neagles Rock, the seasonal waterfall at the Spring Gully Conservation Park and plenty of rolling vineyards. Check the online maps to get going. I want to ride my bicycle – The famous Riesling Trail is 35km of the best riding (or walking) you can imagine. It’s ripe for recreational walkers, mountain and touring

bikes, as well as wheelchairs and pushers; and there’s just the right amount of distraction along the way, including cellar doors and more. Hire bikes from Clare, Auburn or chat to your accommodation provider to get rolling. Step back in time – For lovers of ye olden days, there’s history and architectural delights in heritage listed towns, like Mintaro and Burra. Head to Mintaro to take in the magnificence of Martindale Hall — a sandstone mansion, which was completed in 1880 and has 32 rooms AND our dream... a seven-room cellar. Chin-chin! Still a working farm today, Bungaree Station was established in 1841 and became its own little village — it even has the old District Council Chambers and a church. Nice and natural – The Gleeson Wetlands and Melrose Park are the perfect stop-off for fam-friendly fun, including a lakeside model railway track, a cracking BMX bike park, plus picnic spots, bird watching and public art on offer.

TRAVEL: CLARE VALLEY When you want to dive into Clare’s specialties, head to these beauties for an unforgettable experience…

Sevenhill Cellars

Lovers of fine wine, tourists and history buffs can’t go past the original — Sevenhill Cellars. One of the oldest wineries in Australia, and counted as a national treasure, this 170-year-old heritage site is storybook pretty, has a tree-lined village green and the landmark St Aloysius Church. There’s nothing like a premium wine tasting in their historic cellar door or kicking back with a vino and local produce while the kids play on the lush lawns. Their estate grown, premium parcels of fruit are selected and bottled early to produce fresh and vibrant, great tasting, food-friendly wines — and we’re yet to meet someone who doesn’t love a drop of Sevenhill goodness. sevenhill.com.au | @sevenhillwines

For Clare Valley on a plate, head to this exceptional restaurant nestled in Auburn. Drawing on the incredible produce in the area, owner and Chef Dan Moss showcases the freshest seasonal produce, using harvests from his on-site garden and local growers who are just as passionate as he is about sustainable methods. “Every Tuesday, I gather up produce, throw everything on the bench and write the menu, so there’s always something different to try,” Dan says. His Modern Australian cuisine is perfectly paired with any of the local vinos on a regularly rolling list and best of all, they now offer accommodation. terroirauburn.com.au @terroirauburn

Jack’s House B&B

For a home away from home and a perfectly central base, look no further than Jack’s House B&B. Lovely local, Sue Power has taken care of everything to ensure this country abode is just as welcoming for a family with kids as it is for couples. There are three king-sized beds, plenty of space, personal touches and you’re just a 10-minute walk to supermarkets, restaurants, cafés, shops, playgrounds, the Riesling Trail and weekend markets, so there’s no need for taxis. Specialising in Central Australian Aboriginal Art and fun gifts for the wine lover, this gallery is owned by locals Colin Stevens and Christine Clissold. “We were drawn in by the colour, vibrancy and talent of the female artists in Utopia when we lived in Alice Springs. Now, we personally bring these authentic pieces to the Clare region and we work with the ladies in this community to help get their incredible work recognised across the globe,” says Colin. clarevalleyartgallery.com.au @clarevalleyartgallery

The Little Red Grape

Eldredge Wines

Off the beaten-track, Eldredge Wines is a hidden gem that many find on the way out to the region’s conservation parks. The cottage from 1910 perches on a stunning property, with vineyards and a dam on one side and towering gums on the other. It’s ideal for casual catch-ups over gorgeous wines, plus their events are always a blast. We can’t go past their Blue Chip Shiraz or the Farm Road Pinot Gris; and their Sangiovese vines are the oldest in the region, so you know you’re in for something super spesh. eldredge.com.au | @eldredgevineyards

A country trip is never complete without a bakery stop and this award-winner will blow your socks off! Their must-trys include an eggs benny pie, a lamb shank pie, and a tasty spinach and fetta pie — but there are options for gluten-free, vegos and those who want non-baked goods, too. Everything’s made fresh on-site each day, so you can’t go wrong. And when you want to go slow, head to their licensed café and restaurant in Leasingham for a tonguetickling meal or takeaway — it’s kid-friendly, quality food that’s value for money. @thelittleredgrape

The Olive Bus

On the edge of an olive grove surrounded by vineyards, this 1969 British Leyland bus has been transformed into a licensed café and cellar door for their award-winning Stone Ridge Olive Oil. It’s spot on for a tasty gin, a coffee, wine or a leisurely lunch when you want to slow the pace down. Their fresh and seasonal menu is packed with bruschetta, toasties, soup, muesli and yoghurt, cakes, plus baked potatoes on Saturdays and pizzas on Sundays. Supervised kids and doggos on a lead are welcome, too. They’re closed February and August, and bookings are recommended for this quirky little pit stop. @olivebusclare

MILK & HONEY COTERIE

WORDS Millie Looker PHOTOS Jonathan van der Knapp We recognise their colourful labels, we love a glass of their wine — now Hither & Yon have accommodation and we adore that, too!

H

ither & Yon is a sustainable wine brand with vineyards across McLaren Vale and a cosy cellar door in Willunga that simply makes us happy. With a deep care for both the people who drink their wines and the soil it comes from, the Leask family are consistent trailblazers in the industry. In February 2021, they became the first and only carbon neutral certified winery in SA making better wines with a lighter footprint, not to mention their range of lush drops are always a delight to drink!

COUNTRY COTTAGE ALERT

Looking beyond the vino, brothers Mal and Richard Leask have also recently jumped into a new world with the

introduction of The Coach House nestled on the property “Hillenvale” in Kangarilla. “The Coach House is a boutique and exclusive couples retreat housing a fullyequipped country kitchen, cosy lounge, luxurious bedroom and bathroom, and outdoor drinks deck with beautiful views across the property,” says Mal. This luxury retreat offers accommodation to lucky visitors. After extensive renovations, the exterior has nineteenthcentury sandstone charm, while the interior is set to delight with its soft blue and deep green tones, combined with elegant furniture. This dreamy getaway is perfectly positioned between McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills, which means there are plenty of galleries, walking trails, restaurants and cellar doors right on its doorstep — plus, Kuitpo Forest and Fleurieu Coast are just a hop, skip and a jump away.

A curated Hither & Yon wine delivery every two months? It doesn’t get sweeter than that! The Milk & Honey Coterie is all about sharing beautiful wines straight from the farm, freshly delivered to your door. You’ll feel spoiled silly after joining this coterie for only $110 every delivery, with four bottles of specially selected wine (or three bottles and a local gift) arriving every couple of months. The packaging is beautiful and reusable, and you can even expect some extra goodies like recipe cards and personalised tasting notes. And the treats continue! Subscribe to Milk & Honey between 1 November 2021 and 1 January 2022 and use the code ADELADY to go into the draw to win a two-night stay at the Coach House, valued at $1,000.

YOU’LL FEEL RELAXED FROM THE MOMENT YOU SEE THE 450-MILLION-YEAR-OLD MOUNTAIN RANGE. WORDS James Worthington When it comes to a family road trip, getting there is definitely half the fun!

Y

ou’ll feel relaxed from the moment you see the 450-million-year-old mountain range, the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park. Maybe even as soon as you find those long, open country roads, with a good coffee in hand!

We planned a three-night road trip to Halls Gap to see everything we could around the Grampians in Victoria. If you’re thinking that’s just three relaxing nights of drinking local wines and toasting smores by the fire, you’d be wrong. Sure, we did all of that… and heaps more!

THE DRIVE

digital display inspired by the greatest trilogy of all time. Back to the Future, Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings tragics can send my hate mail to Adelady, PO Box 1717, Burnside SA 5066. The kids loved the art nearly as much as they loved hitting Adventure Island and Apex Pump Track in Horsham — the first of many local skate parks and pump tracks on our trip. We found more right near the old Ararat Gaol and another in Hamilton on the way home.

The Grampians might sound a world away, but an amazing coffee from Henry & Rose in Keith, a few rounds of ‘Eye Spy’ and a solid Spotify playlist made the five-hour trip fly by! There are also loads of places to pull over and have a stretch and a sandwich.

THE SIGHTS

There’s a lot to see on the way to, or from, Halls Gap. The Horsham Regional Art Gallery was showing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander exhibition called ‘Body Language’. For three Star Wars nerds, the highlight was a three-piece indigenous - 16

THE ATTRACTIONS

THE FOOD

When you’re on holiday, cooking should be optional. We opted not to cook because there are so many family-friendly places to eat around Halls Gap. We could think of nothing better than brekky at Salingers Café, then a parmy with chips at Barney’s Bar & Bistro for dinner — or ‘parma’ to the locals. If you’re not into schnitzels, Barney’s has a raft of other options, including some of the finest steaks in the state! One good steak deserves another. Dinner at the Halls Gap Hotel is a no-brainer and if you’re in town for more than a couple of days, you’ll be sure to eat there again.

You can’t drive into Victoria without passing the iconic Giant Koala, which looms 14 metres over the Western Highway in Dadswells Bridge. And the only thing better than GIANT artificial animals is GIANT living, breathing animals! In Pomonal, just outside Halls Gap, Five Ducks Farm has huge geese roaming around outside their recently renovated factory outlet. Beyond these ‘golden geese’ is a shop filled with homemade jams, custard ice cream, honey and savoury pastes made from local produce. A few doors down, Halls Gap Zoo has cheetahs, giraffes, alligators, Texas longhorns, two enormous bison and my absolute favourite, a two-and-a-half tonne Southern White Rhino named Pumbi. We booked an intimate encounter, where we could feed this ‘little’ fellow and hear about a day in the life of one of the most majestic animals on the planet! And if you have any energy left, there’s always Grampians Adventure Golf about five minutes in the other direction. Fore!

THINGS TO DO

If you’re into celebrity spotting, there’s no bigger star around the Grampians than ‘The Rock’. You’ll need a professional guide because these are some seriously steep faces and none come more professional than Adrian from Absolute Outdoors. Even if you can barely retrieve a Frisbee from the roof without getting wobbly, don’t rule out this bucket-list activity. Absolute Outdoors caters for all ages and abilities, so you can climb, paddle, ride or even abseil to a level that you’re completely comfortable with. For your next family holiday, take the wheel and head over the border for a road trip like no other, to the Grampians. You can plan it online, so you have enough time to do it all! @thegrampians visitgrampians.com.au/roadtrip 17 -

orget the Maldives, Seychelles, Bahamas and Mauritius, I’m going somewhere far more superior — Copperstone KI. With magnificent views of Emu Bay from every room, this immaculately designed luxury holiday home is located on fiveand-a-half acres of private land, only a two-minute walk to one of Kangaroo Island’s most popular stretches of coastline, Emu Bay Beach.

Summer doesn’t get any better than this 11/10 beach house, but it’s not just about bikinis and Aperols. With indoor and outdoor wood fireplaces and underfloor heating in the main living and dining area, you’ll be as snug as a bug in a rug during autumn and winter, too. Ideal for couples and friends wanting a kid-free weekend, Copperstone KI is the picture perfect setting to laze and graze — and then laze and graze all over again.

Imagine kicking back with a glass of KI Spirits in hand, nibbling on a platter full of local produce without a worry in the world. On the flip side, you can, of course, bring the munchkins like I will. I couldn't possibly have a birthday without my babies... and my parents... and my husband! And why not, there’s plenty of room. With four bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms and a fancy bathtub overlooking incredible views of KI, it would be unkind if I didn’t invite everyone. I can just see my kids now, living their best lives and transforming into wildlings as they explore the gorgeous property and rub their toes in the sand. Free up some cash For many people, mortgage repayments can be a set and forget kind of deal — you lock into an amount and that’s what you pay each week, fortnight or month. But regularly reviewing your home loan could free up extra cash. Bernie Lewis Home Loans are experts at making sure you get a low interest rate and a loan that best works for you. As Director Mark Lewis explains, every dollar you save is your money and can really add up. “We look at our clients’ home loans roughly every two years to make sure they’re not paying too high an interest rate,” Mark says. “It could be as simple as asking your current lender for a discount — if you don’t ask, you don’t get! Other times, refinancing gets you a better deal elsewhere. The secret is getting the lowest interest rate, which equals a lower monthly repayment. “That’s extra money in your pocket that you can spend on clothes, eating out, indulging in hobbies, even putting more into your home repayments so you pay it off sooner. Whatever you choose to do, it’s your money and your choice.” Don’t sit there mindlessly paying the bank and accepting what that’s giving you. Take an active interest in your loan and make sure you’re getting a low rate and the loan that best suits your lifestyle. Free up some cash today with Bernie Lewis Home Loans.

It doesn't take much to fall head over heels in love with Brockenchack Wines.

B

rockenchack is a boutique family winery named after owners Trevor and Marilyn Harch’s four grandchildren — BROnte, MaCKENzie, CHArli and JaCK. And that says it all! Trev is an honest family man first and a wine enthusiast second. After many years of ‘research’, Trev came to the conclusion that there really is no other wine that tastes as good as a Barossa Shiraz! So, he decided to make some himself. His first vintage in 2008 was a small 37-dozen Jack Harrison Shiraz — just to see what it tasted like. Much to Trev’s excitement, the exceptional quality of the wine spoke for itself and from there, he hasn’t looked back.

“WE BELIEVE IN CREATING WINES THAT ARE HONEST, INVITING AND HIGHLIGHT THE BEST OF THIS UNIQUE REGION WE CALL HOME.”

Today, they own 302 acres of land in the magnificent Eden Valley, with 41 acres covered in vines. Depending on the time of year, you may catch the vineyard dressed in burnt orange and flame red leaves, joyful yellow tones, or lush and green in spring. It really doesn’t matter when you visit, the Brockenchack landscape looks like an oil painting. And their wines are just as exquisite. “We believe in creating wines that are honest, inviting and highlight the best of this unique region we call home. Eden Valley wines are distinctive in their character, displaying wonderful aromatics, elegance, complexity and finesse. Our wines are crafted to share with family and friends throughout life's many circumstances,” says Trev. With the grandkids now adults, they’re all involved in the business in some way and I have a sneaking suspicion that Trev will never retire. Why would you when you’re living the dream?

The greatest gift WORDS Hayley Pearson Strap yourself in for one hell of an experience!

A

delaide Oval RoofClimb is one of those bucket list items that all South Australians should tick off at least once in their lifetime. Offering unparalleled 360-degree views of our dashing city, the foothills and coastline, you won’t find a better view of the most liveable city in Australia — Adelaide! Built in 1871, Adelaide Oval is considered to be one of the most picturesque sporting grounds in Australia — so why wouldn’t you want to see it from above? If you’re a little afraid of heights, fear not, you’re in the safest hands. “Our specially trained RoofClimb leaders deck you out in

all the gear, give you a full safety briefing and then, lock you onto the structure and guide you across the rooftop of the iconic oval’s Western Stand before navigating to the Riverbank platform, perched 50 metres over the hallowed turf. It’s incredible! The Adeladies cannot get enough of it — they’ve done the walk three times now,” smiles RoofClimb legend and Operations Manager Scott Bray. The adrenalin really kicks in when you get the chance to lean out 50 metres above the oval’s cricket field and snap a photo! But the experience is not just about out of this world views — you’ll also learn

something along the way. “You get to sit in the world’s first rooftop stadium seats and learn the secrets and stories that shaped Adelaide’s rich history. Our climbers walk away absolutely buzzing!” Whether you’re buying a pressie for a loved-up couple, interstate visitor, special birthday, team bonding or just because, Adelaide Oval RoofClimb is the gift that keeps on giving. “If your special person thrives on adventure or loves to explore, we have a range of gift ideas to suit the most discerning tastes!” @roofclimb_adelaideoval roofclimb.com.au Photo: Nick Bellotti.

Go next level and take on the iconic RoofClimb at sunset! There’s something extra special about being in silhouette as the sky turns all shades of pink and orange, the oval lights up and the city is twinkling.

ith so much needing to be ‘fixed’ in the world, it can be hard to know where to start. Forage Supply Co. jumped in five years ago to start restoring balance to Mother Nature and their community. Headed up by local lads Scott Rogasch and Justin Westhoff, Forage Supply Co. gives you everyday ways to be more sustainable, and they walk the walk themselves. Their Forage Food Van serves up natural, unprocessed wholefoods; they have a wine brand; a small clothing range; and the boys establish community gardens

with local schools and buy the produce from the students to use for catering. But the good vibes don’t stop there! Scott and Justin have changed the lives of many South Australians facing homelessness through food deliveries, donations and a sustainable housing project under their sister company, Forage Built. “Housing won’t solve homelessness — community will,” Scott explains. “Forage Built brings together a network — builders, support programs and services, meaningful employment opportunities, volunteers and more — to help break the devastating cycle of homelessness. “We’ve partnered with Studio Nine Architects and Frame Creative to build a small community of pods where people doing it tough can store their belongings and sleep safely while we get them the support they need. It’s a stepping stone to gain employment, get into the rental market and regain a sense of dignity and self-worth.” The transportable pods will be housed on unutilised land and can be easily moved to another vacant block as needed. Scott and Justin are working with not-for-profits, such as Hutt St Centre, to ensure that each person inhabiting a pod has the support and resources they need, including an on-site support person. Through Hutt St Centre, Forage Supply Co. has donated over 3,500 meals and

new clothing, employed those in need to label their wines and connected others with opportunities in hospitality, retail and agriculture. “Wherever someone is in their healing process, it’s about helping them find things they’re passionate about, connecting them with those industries and ensuring they have ongoing support to continue building on those foundations,” Scott says. Having launched a prototype pod, the Forage Built team is continuing to fund the program through partnered activities. “Most of our work with Forage Supply Co. gets reinvested into this program, but we’ve also been generously supported through our networks. The Yalumba team is donating proceeds of a specially-created Grenache, called Homefullness; we have a two-year partnership with Tasting Australia and Hutt St Centre; and Merrick Watts recently held an online Grapes of Mirth event, which included a tasting of our wines.” The next step is getting the first community of pods up and running, and you can jump onto their website to show your support. There’s no doubt that this crew of good eggs is having a huge impact on our community and planet. And we love that kind of cool! @foragesupplyco foragesupply.co 25 -

FEEL GOOD: CENTURY 21

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF LIGHTING.

WORDS Millie Looker They say to strike while the iron’s hot — well, the SA property market is on fire!

R

ight now, eager buyers are looking to secure themselves a home in Australia’s most liveable city — Adelaide! If you’ve been umming and ahhing over selling your home or investment property, it may be time to take the leap. Our friends at Century 21 know how to snag the best possible price for your humble abode. Here are their top tips…

WHAT TO DO ✓ First impressions count, so add a pot plant or a new welcome mat and make sure the garden is spick-and-span — it’s often the first thing a potential buyer sees. A property stylist can add to the sale price of a home, too.

✓ Look at your home through the buyer's eyes and make sure personal possessions don’t distract from the features of the property. ✓ Listen to the experts! Your best interests will be their top priority — not only in dollars but also the terms and conditions of the sale. ✓ Create a virtual tour with 360-degree views so potential buyers can get a real feel for your home and you know that the people at open inspections are really interested. ✓ Choose an agent who tells you what you need to hear, not just what you want. Meet with a few agents, get a feel

11/10/21 2:20 pm

FEEL GOOD: CENTURY 21 for their proposed marketing strategies and ensure they understand who is likely to be interested in your property — families are not one size fits all! Also check that they have the necessary local and state government searches before marketing the property, as most buyers will request it when enquiring. ✓ Be different! If most homes in your suburb are sold via Private Treaty, perhaps consider a Best Offers Campaign to make your property stand out. Choose the best method, whether that’s auction, expressions of interest or a price range. ✓ Pick your timing! Some properties are best introduced in a rising market or during strong market conditions, like it is now.

WHERE ARE THE EXPERTS? Right across the state! Find your nearest Century 21 and get in touch for more hot tips. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

WHAT NOT TO DO

x Don’t fall for an agent who offers a discounted commission or promises the highest price or lowest fees. If they can't negotiate the best outcome for themselves, what hope will they have negotiating for you? Agents also have different strengths, so do your research and review their results in the current market — the numbers don't lie! x Don’t skimp on marketing — it could cost you tens of thousands on your final sale price. If you’re unfamiliar with new marketing techniques, don’t reject them right away. Instead, ask a few questions. x Don’t restrict a buyer’s ability to inspect your property. Most buyers have busy schedules and may need to visit outside of scheduled open inspections.

x Don’t leave any stone unturned! Ask yourself, “Could I make any improvements to my home?” — and then do it! x Don’t accept a contract on price only. Ensure the terms and conditions of the sale suit, and you understand what you’re agreeing to. x Don’t be overzealous with pricing. Most buyers are up with current values and will determine for themselves what a property’s value is. Overpriced property can discourage buyers from inspecting. x Don’t underestimate the power of lighting. Open up the blinds, clean the windows and check that all light globes work. x Don’t look to sell straight after signing a new lease, as it excludes a large chunk of potential buyers who might be looking to live in the property immediately. century21.com.au/request-an-appraisal

FEEL GOOD: SPIRITUAL HEALER

WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Any time may be a good time to visit an energy healer.

Y

vette Doudle beams with love, warmth and a strong sense of calm. Just as you don't need to fully understand the law of gravity to stand up and fall over, you don't need to completely grasp the concept of energy healing before you meet this wonderful lady. For 25 years, Energy Healer Yvette has used her natural healing techniques, spiritual practices and teachings to help thousands of people around the globe. “Even if you’re feeling great, you can always feel better, right?” she says. “Think of all the gunk you gather from work, shopping centres, relationships,

family stresses and grief. If you’re feeling like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, you’re anxious, flat or physically drained, I can give you an energy cleanse or chakra balance to sweep all the bad energy out and help you to relax and feel more balanced. “It's like getting a massage without the physical touch. By breaking through your energy blocks, my aim is to stimulate the body's ability to heal itself so you can feel more free,” smiles Yvette. It’s not a one size fits all approach though. In her beautiful room at Jab Acupuncture in Clarence Park, Yvette caters each session to your individual needs because everyone is unique. “Sometimes one session is all you need, but it all depends on how many layers you are carrying and how many I need to clear.” And her practice extends beyond energy clearing, as Yvette explains to us. “As a child growing up in Port Lincoln, I was seeing things that most people didn't and I'd try to block them out because I didn't want to get teased. Then, at nineteen I realised I was psychically gifted and I had an active third eye — and thought maybe

I should explore this more and use what I’ve been born with to help others. “Through a combination of energy healing techniques, I want to help clear away the past and bring a deeper self awareness and harmonious flow into your life.” If you don't fully understand energy healing or past life clearings, that’s okay. Every person will have a different experience, but if you’re open to the idea, you may like to speak to Yvette and see whether she can help you. “Many of my clients say that they have profound experiences and have had huge shifts in the way they feel and the vibes they exude, and that makes me happy.” *As with all services, every person’s experience and results may vary. You should make your own assessment as to whether this is right for you. @yvettedoudle yvettedoudle.com.au

E

rika Owens, the brains and talent behind Adelaide pet photography business Bobo & Jess, is living her dream — turning her passion for pets into a full-time gig. After years of working in the ‘normal’ photography industry, taking beautiful family portraits and snapping memories at weddings across the state, Erika made the move from her home in Port Augusta to Adelaide. She settled into the big city, decided to hone in on her love for animals and Bobo & Jess came to life. Named after her two dogs, Bo and Jessi, Erika’s pure love for animals seeps through into everything she does. “I am an absolute dog lover, so it comes naturally for me to spoil the pets I photograph. I love taking the time to bond

with each animal that comes through my doors and making sure they feel totally comfortable in the studio before we start the shoot,” says Erika. Her portfolio is filled with colourful and cute pictures of both dogs and cats, and you can choose the style of photo that best suits you and your pooch. “I know that every animal has a unique personality and we want the final images to reflect that. That’s why we have a range of packages — from in-studio shoots with bright backdrops through to on-location packages where the whole family can join in. It’s always a little chaotic, but I love it!” Erika laughs. Before the mighty C hit the world, Erika regularly travelled over to Thailand

to volunteer helping stray dogs. Her selflessness has spilled over into Bobo & Jess, and she now donates a portion of each gig to the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand as well as South Australian animal charity, Paws For Change. If your walls are looking a little bare, Erika from Bobo & Jess will capture some memories of your furry best friend to really brighten them up. @bobo.and.jess boboandjess.com.au

Dance FX services absolutely any dancer from 18-months-old right through to 90-year-olds, with sizes ranging from petite to curvaceous. “We’re like a dance uniform shop for dance groups, schools and even people who just like to dress up and dance in their kitchens,” says dance extraordinaire and co-owner Judy. Dancing since their womb eviction day, co-owners Judy and Caitlin have a bond like no other. “I was Caitlin’s dance teacher, so I had the pleasure of watching her blossom into an incredibly talented performer and now we get to work side by side, helping the next generation get excited about dance,” says Judy. Their wealth of knowledge and warm and fuzzy service put Dance FX in a league of their own. I was lucky enough to witness this when 11-year-old Lucy walked into the Unley store with her mum looking for new ballet shorts. It’s not just a grab-and-go experience at Dance FX — Lucy was properly fitted in all the right places and made to feel super special and comfortable. The excitement was real and Lucy and her mum pirouetted out of the store with exactly what they needed. @dancefxsa dancefx.com.au

DID SOMEBODY SAY DANCE UNIFORMS?

Yes, Dance FX can also design and print team uniforms and merchandise so you can be matchymatchy with your dance crew.

PROFESSIONAL POINTE SHOE FITTERS

I had no idea that fitting pointe shoes is such a technical experience — I just assumed anyone and everyone could swan their way around on tippy toes. How wrong I was! “It should take about an hour to fit a good pair of pointes. We work very closely with a physio for your pre-pointe assessment to make sure you are ready. If you’re unsure whether your shoes have been fitted properly, please come and see us — we’ll help you free of charge.”

very parent makes a wish when they hold their baby for the first time — for that precious little person to be happy. Regardless of their path in life, we want our kids to be well balanced and to believe in themselves — get that foundation right and the world is theirs for the taking. This is the backbone of Star Academy, a Grote Street institution providing top-quality education in all facets of performing arts from the age of three. With a huge range of classes from beginner to advanced, Star Academy is an inspiring and fun way for your little ones to build lifelong friendships and get in touch with their own potential, regardless of whether their eyes are set on a career in the entertainment industry or it’s for fun and fitness.

The line-up

Classical, contemporary, jazz, tap, hip hop, singing, drama, musical theatre, acrobatics — there’s a class for every little star and one on one or group options, too. There’s a recreational stream as well as an elite program for students wanting to participate in competitions and exams, and all facilities are top of the pops. And the biggest thing on the calendar is the end of year production. “It’s always something big, dramatic, with a strong storyline and great music. Even the dads won’t nod off,” laughs Founder and Creative Director Jenna Maiolo. A quick chat with Jenna raises the curtain on why this studio is so popular with families all over Adelaide. Her combination of experience and passion for

lifelong learning has me wanting to shrink myself back to being a small fry so I can go to a Star class. “I want the kids who walk through our door to grow up to be passionate about whatever they do in life. We’re teaching life skills — discipline, time management, teamwork and working your butt off. I want to instil in them that if they love what they do, work hard and take pride in it, success will follow,” Jenna says.

The mentors

The difference between a good and an incredible place for any kind of education is the people, and every one of Jenna’s teachers knocks it out of the park. “It’s super important that our students are getting the right education and the

Bigger roles

Their unique position to be steady role models for their students in an everchanging world hit home for Jenna and her team recently. “We’ve really noticed the way that things like social media have added to pressures on kids today. When one of our students was battling anxiety, it sparked the idea to raise money for Kids Helpline — they’re an incredible service for children needing to talk to someone. That idea of being able to open up the conversation about mental health and supporting those in need has led to an exciting partnership between our two organisations, so stay tuned for more details soon.”

s someone with three incredibly independent grandparents at the head of our family, I know how lucky I am to be able to pop around to their home for a cuppa and a chinwag. Like it is for so many, their home is their happy place! South Australian mother and daughter Lee and Gabby McBriarty saw how important it was for ageing generations to be able to stay in their own homes while still feeling supported and safe — and so, My Care Solution was born. This awardwinning company provides a model of care that is unique to its industry. “My mum has experience as a palliative care nurse, but our approach actually stems from my dad’s 15 years with Hilton

Hotels. We provide in-home hospitality to our clients, with a dedicated client care coordinator and twenty-four seven access to a range of services and concierge-like support,” says Chief Operating Officer Gabby. If your loved one needs it, My Care Solution can do it! They boast a huge range of services from basic support, such as personal care, housekeeping, transport and meal preparation, all the way through to more complex support, such as allied health, nursing, twentyfour-hour and overnight care, dementia care and palliative care. Is your loved one worried about greeting a new face at the door every day? Wash that worry away, because My Care Solution

works with a small nurse-led care team, handpicked and matched to each person’s needs and personality so the client can get to know and trust the people visiting their home. And if you’re just dipping a toe into the world of support and in-home care for yourself or a loved one, your client care coordinator will be your new bestie, designing and managing an in-care home experience that suits. “We also provide free in-home consultations with families who don’t know where to start or might need help registering for government assistance,” smiles Gabby. Since its creation in 2018, My Care Solution has been recognised for its model by the Australian Financial Review in 2020 and shortlisted for the Most Innovative Companies Award, Australia wide! globally minded, critical thinkers who are well prepared if they want, or need, to complete further study abroad. The International Baccalaureate programme gets them ready for life in an increasingly intercultural world, through independent thinking and by taking an active role in the community. This holistic approach to education encourages students to find a balance of academic success, community service, and all important personal health and wellbeing. Mercedes first became an IB World School in 1989 and by 1997, was formally recognised as the first Asia-Pacific region school to offer the IB programme from Reception to Year 12. The college has been applauded for its educational excellence and leadership while helping students develop these important life skills across three stages — the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for Reception to Year 5;

MERCEDES COLLEGE’S IB PROGRAMME FAST TRACKS EACH STUDENT’S ABILITY TO LEARN AND THINK INDEPENDENTLY. the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Years 6 to 10; and the Diploma Programme (DP) for Years 11 to 12. Adrian Chiarolli, Assistant Principal Teaching and Learning says, “The continuum of learning across the different stages of development provides diverse opportunities for students to shape who they are as learners. Their experiences and interactions prepare them to be open minded and critical thinkers in a world that is continually evolving”. Mercedes College’s IB programme fast tracks each student’s ability to learn and think independently; skills that would normally be acquired during tertiary learning. Adrian says, “The IB promotes an authentic inquiry approach with a focus on context and concepts rather than solely on content. In this way, knowledge is built in partnership with the student and is transferable across different and unique situations”. @mercedescollegeadelaide mercedes.catholic.edu.au 35 -

FAMILY: ADELAIDE BMW

Cool mum vibes WORDS Lauren De Cesare This year, I said goodbye to carefree Lauren and hello to being a bit more sensible.

A

s soon as I found out I was pregnant, I knew my life was about to change forever. I was so excited about becoming a new mum but also scared of losing my identity and becoming a bit boring. At 37 weeks pregnant, I made the decision to swap my beloved bright blue BMW X2 two-door sporty coupe for my new, grown-up family car — the X4. Look, I’m no car enthusiast, but I am a woman who knows what she wants. So, here are the five reasons I love Adelaide BMW’s X4...

You can still be cool

I can’t actually tell a huge difference between the X2 and X4. From the outside, it may look less racey than the X2, but inside, it’s decked out with all the latest technology.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE CAR — IT’S ABOUT THE ADELAIDE BMW TEAM, TOO. THEY ALWAYS GO ABOVE AND BEYOND. I’m obsessed with its in-built personal assistant, which I can literally ask anything — “Hey BMW, what’s the weather today?” or “Hey BMW, play ABC Kids”. Not to mention the parking assistant, which means I can confidently park my beemer on King William Road without embarrassing myself.

Oh, the space

The boot is huge — like it was made to fit the largest pram on the market, an entire wardrobe, a bunch of baby belongings and my six foot four partner. Getting a car seat in and out is a breeze and there’s the perfect gap between where I sit and the back seat, so I can fit in my gigantic handbag, shopping and Sofia’s nappy bag.

Warm toosh

Two words — heated seats! Sometimes when my partner gets home I tell him I’m popping out to the shops, but in reality, I’m sitting in my car around the corner, cranking the seat warmer with a coffee in hand.

Smarter than me

After three months of very little sleep, the mum brain is real — but my new bestie has my back. For example, without thinking, I loaded up the boot while the car was locked and then realised I’d chucked my

keys in the boot and shut it. Luckily, the X4 knew the car was locked and automatically opened up the boot again to alert me that the keys were in it!

The babysitter

It’s not just about the car — it’s about the Adelaide BMW team, too. They always go above and beyond — even carrying Sofia and her pram up two flights of stairs so we could have a coffee together. How’s that for service? They answer all your silly questions without making you feel foolish, and when you buy a car from Adelaide BMW, they offer a one on one lesson to learn about all its secret features. Thank you, Adelaide BMW, for making me feel like I’m still cool. I’ll always remember the car that safely brought my first child home from the hospital. @adelaidebmwofficial adelaidebmw.com.au

e spend so much time thinking about what we put into our bodies, it makes sense to really consider what we’re feeding our furry friends — and Urban Pet Food is all-over-red-rover it! There’s no need to gamble with the health of your bestie. For the past 30 years, these local legends have been making premium quality pet food using local ingredients at their Edwardstown warehouse. To pack in as much nutrition as possible, the food is cooked slowly, air dried at a low temperature, contains no preservatives and is so good that (even

though you prolly wouldn’t) humans could safely eat it. Tanya Maher has worked here for over 10 years and loves giving people a topshelf choice for their loved ones. “I’ve had two dogs and have only fed them this food because I know what goes into it. I’m confident my fur baby is getting the best nutrition possible and it all gets gobbled up in no time,” she laughs.

THERE’S NO NEED TO GAMBLE WITH THE HEALTH OF YOUR BESTIE.

Formulated by nutritionists, the biologically appropriate raw food contains added protein, seasonal fruit and veggies, and things like yoghurt to make up a balanced diet for your four-legged friends. “We offer different ranges for each breed and have products that are suitable for most dogs and some cats. One of our most popular is our signature product, the Ancestral Recipe, which is basically a muesli for dogs. We always recommend chatting to your vet about your pet’s diet first, but then we can run through great options to suit.” There are nom-noms for every budget, including treats for training adorable pups to spoiling sleepy old bears. And even better, Urban Pet Food offers free delivery* right to your doorstep Australia wide. And they’re right behind some incredible charities that provide a chance at life and a forever home for thousands of abandoned dogs and cats every year. Ohh, our hearts! Sure, it can be convenient to grab a bag of whatever from the supermarket, but it makes so much sense to us to support local and most importantly, invest in the health and wellbeing of our most faithful companions. There really isn’t another soul who will love you so wholly and unconditionally — and to us, that love is worth its weight in gold. *Delivery conditions apply. @urbanpetfood5039 urbanpetfood.com.au 37 -

WHY DID IT TAKE A LOCKDOWN TO REALISE THAT HE WASN’T WHERE HE SHOULD BE?

WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Home schooling during lockdown uncovered some dirty laundry for many SA families.

L

ast year I realised what a terrible ‘teacher’ I was and that I had absolutely zero patience. I also found out that my then eight-year-old, who I’d thought was loving maths at school, was actually really struggling. Simple things that most Year 3s understood, he just couldn’t grasp. This then developed into me having severe mum-guilt and thinking, how did we not

know this? Why did it take a lockdown to realise that he wasn’t where he should be? In a panic, I Googled ‘Adelaide tutors’ and NumberWorks’nWords popped up — English and maths tutoring for every ability. And weirdly enough, it was love at first sight for Austin. Fast forward twelve months and my now nine-year-old is a different kid. I’m not saying he’s suddenly Einstein, but he actually now enjoys maths and he’s gone from getting scores like 3/30 to 25/30 in school tests. With locations in Unley and Norwood, NumberWorks’nWords is not just for children who are struggling to keep up in Maths and English — it’s also for kids bursting at the seams to get ahead. Aimed at children between five and 16, their programs are tailored to meet your child’s specific needs and most importantly, give them confidence and make life easier at school.

“We welcome you to come into our centre and see our students happily engaged in their learning programs. If you’re not sure, try a free assessment in English and/or maths for your child — there’s absolutely no obligation to sign up. It’s simply a great opportunity for you to discover how your child is progressing,” says owner Stella. And apparently it’s FUN! Just ask my son Austin. “They teach me to learn and get better at maths, and it’s actually fun. We do maths games on the computer and they test us and I normally get 100 percent now, which is so cool. Sometimes we have quizzes at the end of the lesson and I get to choose a prize.” All tutors are fully trained, are experts in their field and regularly give you updates on where your child is at — and Austin’s update is that he’s right where he’s meant to be. @numberworksadelaide numberworksnwords.com/au

All’s hair in love and war

FAMILY: UGLY SWAN

WORDS Em Worthington Once upon a time, mornings for mamas were balls — and then, an Ugly Swan came to save the day!

F

or less stress, no tears and tidy tots in the mornings, the superior brushes from Ugly Swan are a game changer. With families in mind, three local ladies, Marissa, Annette and Marisa, created a brush to rival all others — one that glides effortlessly through the knottiest of knots without evoking so much as a whimper. “Our own experiences getting kids ready sparked it all — we didn’t want our families to start the day with yelling and screaming anymore, and we knew it didn’t have to be like that,” says Marissa.

Detangle this mangle

So, what separates an Ugly Swan brush from the rest of the bevy? They’re particularly great for people with sensory issues and they’re even recognised by the NDIS. “Synthetic bristles in the average brush rip the hair. Our exclusive design has dual bristles made from natural fibres, so there’s no pulling or tugging. It’s gentle, even on the most sensitive of scalps — it’s truly scream-free and even dubious dads will be confident using one!”

Scream-Free™ Maxi Brush – For everyday brushing of long, curly, fine or thick hair, the Maxi is the bee’s knees. And if you want one of each or multiple brushes for the fam, they come in handy packs, too.

Not just for kids

There’s no excluding the big kids! While originally designed with smaller folks in mind, they can be used for all ages. “Our brushes are popular with girls, boys, men and women. Many women find their hair is affected by hormonal changes as they age, and our brushes can prevent split ends and breakage as well as stimulating your scalp to naturally produce oils that condition the hair. It can also mean less washing, as these oils naturally clean and prevent dandruff,” Marissa explains.

When it comes to cost, an Ugly Swan purchase is worth every cent. “You can spend money on expensive shampoos, conditioners and serums, but if you’re using a synthetic brush, you could be undoing any good you’ve done and end up damaging your hair every day,” says Marissa. “We’ve had parents in tears telling us what a huge difference one little thing has made to their daily routine,” says Marissa. Jump online to also check out Ugly Swan’s Unicorn Hair Towel Wraps, which give you a fast, gentle way to dry hair without friction. Even better, get 10% off all online purchases when you use the code ADELADY before 30 May 2022. Hair, hair! @ugly_swan_ uglyswan.com.au

FAMILY: SCOTCH COLLEGE

High school musical WORDS Em Worthington

Imogeone Mons.

The lights go down, the curtain rolls up and a world of opportunity is born.

W

elcome to the wonderful world of performing arts — rich in history, emotion and entertainment, it’s something that Scotch College does incredibly well! The opportunities for students at Scotch College to immerse themselves in the performing arts are next level. Cue the lights…

The foundation

Head of Drama Nicola Triglau says the sky's the limit. “Scotch offers a breadth and depth of performing arts opportunities like no other. Students can focus on one or many areas and engage in what they love. Every year, we’ve had students going on

to study at some of the most renowned performing arts schools, including NIDA, WAAPA, the VCA and Flinders Drama Centre. The line-up of successful old scholars speaks volumes,” Nicola says. “Highly-acclaimed Australian actress Sarah Snook focused her path on the curriculum drama program and straight acting. We’ve had others, like Benn Welford, engage in both the musical and drama curriculum and go on to travel internationally with The Lion King; and another student who has gone straight to the Sydney Conservatorium to study contemporary music practice. “Even for those who don’t pursue a

career in the performing arts sector, the confidence and skills they learn are so transferrable. We’ve had drama students go on to become lawyers, politicians, anaesthetists, you name it, and many of them acknowledge that learning how to communicate through their body and voice has helped them to become successful in their chosen careers.”

The musical

Scotch College has a history of putting on great musicals each year — this year is no different with Beauty and The Beast. As an extracurricular activity that’s independent to the drama program (although a lot of students naturally get involved in both), it involves around 80 students from Years 7 to 12 who perform, are in the crew or musical ensemble, so it’s an allhands-on-deck kind of thing. With seven performances that sold out in record time, the anticipation for this year’s production was electric. Scotch College brought in awardwinning performer, teacher, director and owner of Davine Productions, David Gauci, - 40

“THE CONFIDENCE AND SKILLS THEY LEARN ARE SO TRANSFERRABLE.” to head up the musical. “I’ve been involved in community and professional theatre my whole life but this is my first year working with Scotch, and it’s been incredible. It’s quite a team here — a very slick running unit, with everyone working hard to give the students an experience as close as possible to a professional musical. I’m so fortunate to work with them, I really am,” David says.

The cast

Year 12 student, Imogeone Mons is taking Stage Two Drama and Music and is playing the lead role of Belle in the musical. “It’s been great to be part of it, and the costumes have been spectacular,” she says. “It’s been such an experience and we’ve become like a family. The younger kids start

out shy and then you see the confidence they gain when they put themselves on stage — it’s really exciting to see their progression. And the ensemble is just as big a part; we can’t do it without them.” Imogeone has her heart firmly set on a career in the performing arts and Scotch is right behind her. “Hopefully drama will be my top option, but I’m also thinking about studying classical music so I’m trying to keep my options open.” Whatever her path, we’re sure that like any of the students who have been under Scotch College’s watch, it will undoubtedly be bright. @scotchcollege scotch.sa.edu.au

Note: the sauce will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm or chilled. • To make the custard, combine milk and cream in a medium saucepan over a low-medium heat, stirring constantly. • After a couple of minutes, add vanilla bean paste and continue to cook for approximately 5 minutes or until hot — do not boil. Steadily increase the speed and keep mixing until combined and smooth. • Return the mixture to a saucepan over a low heat. Cook, stirring constantly until the custard thickens to your liking. White chocolate and raspberry tart The real burst of flavour in this tart comes from the pops of FruChocs. Time 1 hour + 3 hours to set Serves 8 Recipe Laura Bakhtiarian Photos Naomi Giatas 1 pack shortcrust pastry, thawed 250g white cooking chocolate, melted 135g White Choc Raspberry FruChocs, blitzed into crumbs 150ml full cream milk 155ml thickened cream 4 gelatine leaves 30g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste Fresh berries for garnish (optional) Gold leaf, for garnish (optional) Extra White Choc Raspberry FruChocs, halved for garnish (optional)

• Preheat oven to 160°C fan-forced. • Line a 20cm fluted tart tin with shortcrust pastry, gently pressing it into the base and sides of the tin. You may need to join a couple of pieces together at the seam to make it fit. Trim overhanging pastry until level with the top of the tin. • Prick the base of the tart tin with a fork, then place into the fridge for 20 minutes. • Remove tart base from the fridge, then line the pastry with baking paper and weights and bake for 12–14 minutes. • Remove tart from the oven, then remove paper and weights, and bake in the oven for an additional 12 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool completely. • In a small mixing bowl, combine melted white chocolate and crumbed FruChocs. • Pour the white chocolate mixture into the cooled tart shell and place in the fridge until completely cooled.

We used: White Choc Raspberry FruChocs Picture this — tangy, real apricots mixed with a sweet, natural raspberry flavour, smothered in rich, luscious white chocolate. That’s the goodness you can expect from the brand new White Choc Raspberry FruChocs from Menz. They’re berry delicious and almost impossible to share! Visit fruchocs.com.au for more recipe ideas.

• To make the filling, heat milk, cream, sugar and vanilla bean paste in a saucepan over a low-medium heat, until almost boiling. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool down. • Meanwhile, add gelatine leaves to a bowl of cold water and set aside to soften for 5–10 minutes. • Drain gelatine leaves and squeeze out any excess water, then whisk into the warm milk mixture. Pour the milk filling slowly into the tart tin, on top of the set white chocolate filling. Return to the fridge for at least 3 hours to set. • Decorate using fresh berries, FruChocs and gold leaf.

B

ut, once you meet the co-creator of this Australian food phenomenon, DoughBalls Pizza, you’d argue it probably should! Cat’s a go-getter. When we took our boys into DoughBalls for lunch during the school holidays, she greeted us warmly, while running an already busy Glenelg restaurant full of parents and their very, VERY happy kids. Most people struggle to remember somebody’s name while shaking their hand, yet Cat easily held a conversation with the four of us, while she kept an eye on her teams in the kitchen and out on the floor. And not just the kitchen and floor of the Glenelg restaurant… DoughBalls recently opened in Mawson Lakes and Cat somehow has the energy to watch that one, too. Did I mention she’s Mum to toddler, Maddison, and new bub, Ronan? Yep, to say that Cat loves a challenge is a massive understatement! DoughBalls is going gangbusters and has been ever since Cat and her husband, Lincoln, an Adelaide-born musician, launched in Glenelg in February 2020. In a year when the world virtually stopped, they continued to build on their dream, which began all the way back in the UK. They met while working on a cruise ship, where their different backgrounds in hospitality and customer service helped to shape a seed of an idea. For most, maternity leave is reserved for navigating the turbulent waters of becoming new parents. But when 53 -

FOOD: DOUGHBALLS

ONE DOUGHBALLS JUST WASN’T ENOUGH FOR THE CITY OF CHURCHES!

Maddison was born, they put an incredible business plan into action! They had their idea. They just needed the perfect place to roll it out: Adelaide. Their licensed restaurant in Glenelg was the ideal place to launch, as it captured hungry families out for a day at the beach. The very popular DoughBalls rolled on outside of summer and so did their menu, which expanded to include brunch and after-school treats. Demand during the cooler months and, of course, COVID-19, led to a natural progression to home delivery of their dinners and desserts. Then came their Mawson Lakes restaurant, as one DoughBalls just wasn’t enough for the city of churches! Cat and Lincoln’s dream has always revolved around feeding families. And not just to open any old restaurant; but one that offers value for money and exceptional table service for busy parents who can’t

spend all night waiting with restless kids. Their solution: feed kids quickly and let them make a mess! DoughBalls Glenelg is a vibrant place that welcomes families into colourful booths resembling little beach huts. Whereas Mawson Lakes features a spectacular mural by local artist, Nicky Create. The menu is stacked, colourful, delicious and designed to cater to even the fussiest of eaters. Both of our kids fall into that category, as they have their preferences and won’t back down an inch. We didn’t need to worry, because Cat’s team had it covered. Adult-sized margherita pizza for one and a kids’ Napolitana pasta for the other. The only fight that broke out was over Austin not giving Alfie a slice of his pizza — the food is just. Too. Good! Luckily for Alfie, DoughBalls specialises in brunch, lunch, dinner AND his favourite… desserts. Let me reel off a few of their DoughBalls Desserts to get your tastebuds firing: Jam Doughnut, Strawberries and Cream, Tiramisu, French Toast, Lamington, Gaytime, Snowballs and Snowballs GRANDE. They also do more traditional desserts like Chocolate Brownie, Sorbet, New York Cheesecake and every coffee lover’s favourite, Affogato. Or, for those

who love an Italian calzone and would eat them every meal of every day, DoughBalls has got you covered for dessert — Nutella and Strawberry Calzone or their brand-new Rocky Road Calzone! If you’ve been to DoughBalls and thought the winter menu was good, just have a look at their new menu for the warmer months — it’s next-level! Try Tropical Pina Colada DoughBalls with fresh mango, coconut, pineapple salsa, coconut sorbet and passionfruit coulis. Or the savoury Fiery Chicken Pizza, BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza and Sloppy Joe DoughBalls. This is just the tip of the DoughBall, as they run other seasonal specials, including a Christmas Dinner Pizza and their Snag Pizza, which is Aussie A.F! But Cat and Lincoln aren’t stopping there — they have more BIG plans in the works, so stay tuned. For now, you can dine in or take away from DoughBalls in Glenelg and their brand-new restaurant at Mawson Lakes. Or enjoy DoughBalls pizza and desserts delivered to your door via Uber Eats and Menulog. @doughballsau doughballspizza.com.au

Combined with Laura Edmunds’ creative cocktails, Animesh Mallick’s expertise in customer experience and Annie Jiang’s background running a successful business, they make a dream team! So, what sets them apart?

Hello Neighbour

Serving brunch from 7am to 3pm, it’s the great coffee and varied menu that keeps neighbours and visitors coming back. On most tables, you’ll spot a serving of their most popular dishes, including the crab and prawn omelette in a soy broth; and the tempura calamari with fried eggs and green pancakes. If you’re more of a traditionalist, get stuck into the spiced halloumi with smashed avo and a poached egg. Did somebody say mimosa? Add some edge to your order with a breakfast cocktail or two.

Artusi by Night

If you’re going to do something, you may as well do it well — and Artusi has nailed their gnocchi. The star of the show, their handmade gnocchi recipe has been perfectly refined by Italian Head Chef Francesco Nardinocchi, and the quality never wavers. It’s a struggle to pick just one dish to feast on, so we highly recommend sharing with your hot date. A couple of our top picks include the slow cooked beef cheek ragu; and the pumpkin gnocchi with a macadamia crumb and whipped ricotta; ordered with a side of octopus carpaccio; and a fresh radicchio, fennel and orange salad. For something to sip on, choose from the SA wine list or pick an Italian or local beer. And, of course, the cocktail menu is ready to impress! @helloartusi_gnoccheria helloartusi.com.au

ocated in Erindale is an eatery pumping out some of the most delectable Lebanese food that we’ve had the privilege of eating. No matter what time you visit, customers can expect a warm welcome, steaming cup of quality coffee and a feast fit for a queen.

On the menu is an array of traditional goodies just waiting to be experienced, and sharing is definitely encouraged — you don’t want any food envy here! Some must-haves are the homemade falafels, which are fluffy yet crispy and made fresh to order; the fragrant traditional dips, like hummus and baba ghanouj, ready to be scooped up by a piece of Lebanese bread; and the chicken tawook dish, which boasts vibrant flavours and sells out daily. Like any good food destination, the passion for delicious eats comes from the people behind The Rustic Fig Café.

Having met many moons ago, husband and wife Naji and Erica built their life together in Naji’s homeland of Lebanon and had two beautiful kids before relocating to Adelaide in 2015. “My husband’s passions are cooking food, eating food, and sharing food!” says Erica, which is why you’ll find Naji busy in the kitchen, perfecting the recipes that he grew up with and creating new ones. If Naji is the heart of the business with his recipes then Erica is the soul, with her affable nature making her the perfect person to run front-of-house. “Being in the suburbs makes it feel like a real community. People can come in and have a coffee and chat — I’m always up for a chat!” laughs Erica as she hops from table to table, greeting regulars by name. Open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 2.30pm, it’s the perfect place to drop by for brunch or lunch. Recently, they’ve also started opening their doors for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday with a different menu featuring dishes like the T.L.C (chargrilled lamb sitting on a tart and tangy black cherry sauce). The Rustic Fig Café is also licensed, offering Lebanese and South Australian wine and beers, or you can BYO. If you’ve got a special shindig on the horizon, you can also take up their catering options with tasting plates available in large quantities — the perfect nibbles to enjoy with a glass of wine! WORDS Tory Camilleri PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Having a great local chicken shop is the cornerstone of any neighbourhood, and Chicken Central exceeds all expectations.

E

veryone knows that part of the deal when you make a big move interstate is re-establishing those relationships you’ve created over a lifetime — the ones that you assume will always be a part of your life. Your neighbour who always has the ingredient you forgot to buy at the store, your favourite shopping haunts where you know the floorplan so well you can get in and out in record time and possibly most importantly, your locals — those takeaway places that become a staple part of your weekly routine. When we lived in Melbourne, we were lucky enough to have found not just a chicken shop — we found THE chicken shop, Chicken Central. The one so good,

that even when we moved house, we drove that extra distance to keep it as our chicken shop… until we moved states. Launched headfirst into the abyss of trying to replace undeniably the best tasting chicken takeaway ever, we set out on an unwinnable journey. But like the universe was rewarding us for moving to the best state in Australia, our quest ended in the greatest possible way — Chicken Central launched in Malvern! With over 15 years in hospitality, owner Jason ensures no quality has been lost in crossing the border from Melbourne, bringing with him the charm and friendly service we’ve noticed seems to be commonplace from South Aussies.

WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE FOUND NOT JUST A CHICKEN SHOP — WE FOUND THE CHICKEN SHOP, CHICKEN CENTRAL.

Chicken Central meets all our musthaves — the service is fast with healthy yet delicious options on the menu; the food is amazing; the menu pleases the whole family (which means no arguments from the kids!); the chicken is free-range and gluten-free; the salads are made fresh daily; and they also support local businesses. Tick, tick, tick! Chicken Central is our go-to, saving us on many nights when we’ve run out of time to get dinner sorted and thankfully it is also super easy to order online through their website, Uber, Deliveroo and Menulog. I’ll admit, over time I’m pretty sure we’ve tried it all and whilst it’s hard to commit to one favourite, if I had to call it, I’d say it’s the Featherweight Wrap; my husband votes for the CC Deluxe with Presidential Chips; and the kids can’t go past the roast chicken with salad and chips. After our move from Melbourne, I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you I was keen to get back just so I could have Chicken Central again. Thankfully, now it’s here, there’s no reason to go back. @chicken.central chickencentral.com.au 57 -

Two Greek Boys is built on family values and authentic Greek experiences. “We love our small family business! My husband cooks on the grill, my sister works front and back of house, my mum does our homemade desserts — family is everything to us,” says Effie.

So, what’s on this delicious menu? “We do yiros, grills, the classic AB, dips, pizzas, desserts — the lot. Our yiros is different from normal chicken shop yiros — we make thicker pita bread and put chips inside, just like they do in Greece, and our yiros with Greek sausage infused with orange and halloumi isn’t like anything you’ve eaten before.” It’s true, if you close your eyes while taking your first mouthful of their yiros, you could be chillaxing on a balcony in Mykonos, overlooking crystal blue waters and islands for days. Right up there with those incredible views is something that fits in the palm of your hand — the desserts. In all their sweet goodness, their chocolate baklava, revani, cream kataifi and galaktoboureko are, without a doubt, worth sinning for.

BURGER INCREDIBLE 111 UNLEY ROAD, UNLEY

Serving mouth-wateringly Instagrammable burgers since 2020, Burger Incredible is in a league of its own! “We’re a licensed burger venue bringing you the best smashed patties and fried chicken burgers, loaded fries, schnitzels and shakes in town,” says owner Johnny.

ARE YOU A VERY IMPORTANT PERSON?

Johnny reckons that loyal customers deserve something special! “By ordering on our website, you’ll accumulate loyalty credits that get automatically redeemed.”

His burgers have quickly become a hit on social media, with thousands of South Australians sharing Burger Incredible on their feeds, and Johnny has nailed the chilled vibe inside this Unley hotspot. What’s their secret? “There are two, and we're happy to share them: we bring simplicity and dedication to everything we do.” And they do it all with a smile! Let’s go steady with their burger menu. Consistently popular is the Fried Chook burger, which is marinated in buttermilk, coated in their unique herb and spice mix, then fried and topped with homemade ingredients; or the Signature Double, with its soft potato bun, creamy American cheese slices melted over two smashed patties, streaky bacon, onion, pickles, butter lettuce and fresh tomato, finished with housemade Burger Incredible sauce. And if you’re vego but get FOMO, The Veg Out burger is worth every mouthful. But you can’t have a burger without fries right? I was happy with just a dash of chicken salt, but these guys go next

level with their Loaded Fries, adding cheese, bacon, jalapeños, gravy — whatever floats your boat! Families are welcome and their Lil Homies menu has everything ‘Lil’, plus they do a burger of the month so you can try something new. And it doesn’t stop at burgers — they also offer schnitties, hotdogs, plenty of sides and desserts! I wouldn't say no to a slice of homemade Oreo Cheesecake or a Mars Bar Spring Roll, would you? @burgerincredible burgerincredible.com.au 61 -

A’s Banana Boogie Bakery is award winning for a reason — their products are ace! Now they’ve taken it to the next level with their party range and we can’t imagine another birthday without them. So let’s deep dive... what’s on offer? We have to start with the loaded vanilla slice slabs. I mean, come on — they’re a complete show stopper.

“We created this range because our loaded vanilla slice was so popular and we already make the traditional vanilla slice as a slab cake — so we thought, why not combine the two together?” said owner and head baker Jason. ur friends at Delicia have launched their Inner Glow Collagen + Prebiotic drink and it’s here to make dreams come true. We’re super proud of this local biz — they’ve got stores popping up interstate and their own exclusive line of take-home goodies to boot. With so many benefits to your bod, collagen products are popping up left, right and centre, and we wanted to know what all the fuss is about. We caught up with the creator of Delicia, Scott Dempster, for the low-down…

DELICIA’S INNER GLOW COLLAGEN + PREBIOTIC DRINK PLUMPS UP THE JAM!

COLLA-WHAT?

There’s a lot to love about getting older and we want to age gracefully, but there are a few things we want to put the brakes on. Collagen is the body’s main player when it comes to healthy skin, hair and nails and as we age, our body’s collagen decreases naturally. That’s where Delicia’s Inner Glow Collagen + Prebiotic drink plumps up the jam! “This pretty pink drink works by topping up and stimulating the production of more collagen, leaving you with healthier hair, skin and nails,” Scott explains. “There’s a whole range of benefits — it can also decrease fine lines and wrinkles, boost new collagen production, improve skin elasticity and integrity, increase skin hydration. And if that’s not enough, it also promotes good gut health and a balanced digestive system, which impacts your entire body.”

HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE

This isn’t just some fad. The team behind Delicia’s hot new product have done the yards to ensure you get a top-quality product at an affordable price. “Our Inner Glow Collagen + Prebiotic drink is packed with high-grade wild marine collagen that’s been sustainably sourced from Norwegian wild-caught fish in Atlantic waters. It’s the most similar collagen to what’s in your skin, hair and nails and is superior in how it’s absorbed into your body. And to maximise this, we’ve also included Vitamin C and a blend of

H

ere at Adelady, we love to celebrate not just the glorious, big moments like when baby Sofia was born but the small wins too, like a great day together in our favourite city. Rohan Family Wines gets the brief every time. This small family-run business makes boutique wines from the heart, carefully crafting them with special moments in mind — even labelling the wines so you can easily decide which one fits the occasion. Whether you want to dance the night away as a group with their Always Sparkling Brut in hand or have a small, intimate catch up with close friends over a glass of their After Dark Grenache, Rohan Family Wines will enhance every experience. The fruit and

oak flavours of their Table Top Shiraz is an Adelady HQ favourite! Capitalising on the countryside charm of McLaren Vale just 40 minutes from the city, you can create your own special memories at Rohan Family Wines new cellar door, Heidrun Estate, which is now open. The venue has a genuine and casual atmosphere and welcomes everyone like family. You can’t help but decompress when you’re immersed in the scenery that surrounds the winery. We suggest grabbing one of their picnic boards and setting up in your own little corner of the grounds. You can expect your experience to be chilled and primed for laughter with friends or family, sharing a plate from their diverse and locally sourced menu and pairing it with one of their contemporary

wine options. There’s even the chance to book into one of their monthly wine events, which includes six courses of the best seasonal Fleurieu Peninsula produce. Heidrun Estate has captured the essence of those memories that last a lifetime. It celebrates the delights of good food and great wine in an environment where you can relax... and enjoy it with those who matter most.

DRINK: HEY LOW SPIRITS

I’ll drink to that! WORDS Millie Looker A delicious low-alcohol gin? Say Hey Low to your new favourite drink.

W

e love an icy cocktail — but what we don’t love is the headache and foggy feeling that follows. Turns out SA locals Felishia and Len weren’t big fans of the after-booze blues either, which led them to create Hey Low Spirits. “Len and I met at a distilling workshop in 2019 and were talking about how great it would be to make gin for a living. But we needed a point of difference, and we wanted our brand to really stand for something,” says Felishia.

HEY LOW OFFERS GIN LOVERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO MODERATE THEIR ALCOHOL INTAKE WITHOUT ANY OF THE FOMO. With less than a handful of low-alcohol spirits available — and none distilled in Australia at that stage — Felishia and Len found their niche: an all natural, low-alcohol botanical spirit. Hey Low Spirits are gluten-free, sugarfree, vegan-friendly, contain no nasty ingredients and they’re just a teeny-tiny 18 calories per serve — so it’s a drink that will have your body thanking you, not cursing you the next day. Packing a punch with passionfruit and plenty of citrus, each sip carries a light and bright taste and won’t drag you down with a hangover. Quickly gaining an adoring fan base with conscious consumers, Hey Low Spirits can already be found behind the bar in some of our fave establishments like Good Gilbert, BRKLYN and Hains & Co. If you don’t feel like putting on your party pants just to grab a drink, you can also buy a bottle of Hey Low online or in selected bottle shops around SA and enjoy a cocktail at home, just the way you like it. With an aim to also support a happy planet, all packaging is recyclable and sent out in biodegradable satchels. They really do it all!

Photo: Wayne Pearson.

How is it possible?

Distilled right here in Adelaide and boasting 75 percent less alcohol than your average gin, Hey Low offers gin lovers an opportunity to moderate their alcohol intake, without any of the FOMO. “The process behind distilling a low-alcohol product is quite different to a normal gin, as you need to compensate for the lack of alcohol in the product. We use triple the amount of botanicals that you’d find in a normal gin so that the full flavour really shines through. We still predominantly use juniper as that’s the base of our spirit, but we also use lemon myrtle and mandarin peel to give it that citrusy zing,” explains Felishia.

DRINK: KERSBROOK HILL WINES

WORDS Em Worthington Are you a glass swirler and tannin expert? Or more of a ‘detecting hints of a tasty tipple’ kinda gal? Kersbrook Hill welcomes you all.

N

estled snugly in the Adelaide Hills township of Kersbrook, this family owned and operated vineyard, winery and cellar door is the bomb. Paul Clark and his family proudly specialise in premium cool climate wines and cider, and whether you know the wine-speak or just enjoy a delicious drop, they’ll host you for a delightfully laid-back visit.

LET’S TALK VINO

The beauty of being a small, independently-run winery means Paul can play! “We love experimenting with new and different styles to create small batch wines that delight the senses — most are only available from our cellar door or through our wine club membership.”

Photo: Wayne Pearson.

And the fruits of their experimentation have really paid off with some exciting new releases just in time for warmer weather. “Our newest white is low in alcohol, so it’s perfect to drink at a company lunch or get-together when you want to still be able to drive. We’ve named it Fika — a Swedish saying which means to take a moment to slow down and enjoy the good things in life,” Paul says. “Another fun addition to our line-up is the Pet Nat, which is a low-intervention pink wine. It has a natural carbonation; is a very organic conscientious wine and tastes like Fruit Tingles.” Now, that tickles our fancy!

LET’S TALK VIBES

Between the setting, the wines, tasty pizzas and down-to-earth hospitality, Kersbrook Hill is a winner any time of the year. A cellar door tasting with Paul and the team is all about genuine hospitality — at no cost he’ll chat in layman’s terms or mix it up if you’re into wine lingo. Or you can delve deeper with a Family Series tasting, which includes a behindthe-scenes tour of the winery — they even

have a new series rosé named after granddaughter Ellie Mae… cuuute! “You can try barrel tastings — which are very different, really raw and fresh as opposed to settled once they’re sealed in the bottles,” Paul says. Warm, inviting and authentic, this sustainable material can be shaped into unique pieces that add a chic natural vibe to your casa. SA based sister-bosses Kylie and Alicia have dived headfirst into the rattan world to create their booming brand, Koko Collective — a predominantly online business that sells beautifully handcrafted pieces of furniture and homewares. “While on a family holiday, we met a local lady who crafted beautiful rattan pieces. It was a small family business, which we love to support, and we could tell

that a rattan range would be popular in Australia,” says Kylie. The two sisters design rattan pieces with the Australian lifestyle in mind. Their popular Winnie Buffet is a beautiful example of this; originally large with ample storage, there were requests for a shorter design and also a narrower design to fit Australian homes — so the girls made this happen and now they’re a popular staple! Their success has seen Koko Collective recently move into a showroom in Edwardstown, making it even easier for eager clients to pick out their dream pieces. Pop into one of their monthly open days where you can select one of the many pieces they have in stock — check their social media for details. Koko Collective is also open on Thursdays and Fridays for customer collections and browsing.

ashion is such a fun and easy way to express yourself and with Serafina Boutique, you can make sure you’re damn comfy while you do it. Their own brand of women’s clothing is designed right here in Adelaide and exclusively stocked online and in their stores around SA, including Unley, Norwood, Rundle Place, Castle Plaza, Westfield Marion, Westfield West Lakes, Golden Grove and their newest store in Elizabeth. “Our clothing is for the everyday woman who loves bold, bright prints and classic staples that wash and wear well and feel great on. We’re big on layering and free flowing clothing, so you can walk out of the

house each day feeling great, without having to put in too much effort,” owner Emily says. And all of their designs are created with body shapes and sizes of all kinds in mind. “There are real women behind our design choices — it’s everything we look for ourselves and what our staff and customers tell us they’re after. So many of us have had kids and change shape and size as we get older, but that doesn’t mean squeezing into things we once wore or pieces that don’t work with our lifestyles. It’s about on-trend fabrics and cuts that give shape without clinging to your tummy or coming up short — and it’s different to what you’ll see elsewhere.” One of the best parts? Grabbing your seasonal staples and some statement pieces for fun doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. “Because we do it all ourselves, we can keep our prices really reasonable,” Emily says.

SERVICE WITH A GENUINE SMILE Photo: Supplied.

With so much fast fashion and online shopping around, genuine service can be

hard to come by. This is one of the things that sets Serafina apart, big time! “We’re not going to tell you what you want to hear to make a sale. We’ll always be respectfully honest and if something’s not working, we’ll work with you to find something that’s just right. So much thought goes into our creations and it’s everything to us that you love putting it on long after the shopping trip has ended.” And there’s lots to get excited about with new-season stock dropping regularly. “Follow us on Instagram to get sneak peeks at our new arrivals and see real women from our team giving you styling tips.” But Emily’s biggest advice when it comes to shopping with Serafina? “Have fun! Don’t be afraid to try something on, even if you wouldn’t normally pick it. Sometimes you’ll surprise yourself and as long as you walk out feeling fantastic, our job is done.” @serafina_boutique serafinaboutique.com.au 71 -

HOMESTYLE CO. IS BACK WITH A BEAUTIFUL NEW LOOK.

“At the start of 2021, we received our 40-foot container filled with brand new furniture. This time around, we’ve gone for a very different look to any of our previous work or any other styling company in Adelaide. It’s incredibly upmarket and of excellent quality,” says Jo. As a property nerd, I’ve scrolled through my fair share of beautiful houses — and eventually, it gets to a point where everything starts to look the same. Except when Jo and her team of expert stylists are on the job! “We’ve gravitated towards furniture that will make your home stand out from the crowd. Each property is treated individually; the target market is taken into consideration and we analyse each space and each home, customising the style each time.” And while Jo and her daughter Amy Watters are certainly trailblazers of this new look, they’re backed by over 15 years of experience in the industry. With a brilliant

team, a list of contacts to help refresh your home and an eye for seamless styling, Homestyle Co. is who you want on your side! “The stylists we have at the moment, Kelsey and Olivia, have an infectious energy and are constantly taking their projects to the next level,” says Jo. place and it was good to go, which is perfect if you have a genuine phobia of flat packs. It’s the ideal replacement for that big, bulky clothesline hanging off the side of your house or that pesky rotary hoist that needs to be mowed around and avoided by the kids as they play. I wish we knew about Mrs Peggs Handy Line years ago. We’re limited on space and as we all know, not everything can go into or survive the clothes dryer. Our now-redundant and back-breakingly low clothes horse had to be moved upstairs because our darling dachshund thought the dangling clothes were a toy designed for her amusement, so often our dining chairs and bar stools were decorated with clothes and undies, providing a stunning aesthetic for our poor visitors. Mrs Peggs has solved that problem, too!

Mrs Peggs range of five Handy Lines is designed for all living situations. The height options of the Handy Line make it a total breeze for tall people like myself to hang out the laundry, rather than bending over to put tiny little baby socks on the bottom row of a clothes horse. All designs can hold large towels and even queen-sized bed sheets — just fold them in half length-ways and peg to the line! If you’re not super tall, have limited mobility or are a wheelchair user, the Easy 8 is a lower line — it weighs only two-anda-half kilograms and has the ability to hold

a good two loads of washing. It’s also low enough to comply with balcony drying restrictions, meaning apartment dwellers can get in on the action, too! Larger family and more washing? No worries. Mrs Peggs Handy Line Deluxe 10 is still ultra lightweight and can impressively hold more than two loads, including your king-sized sheets over the 16 metres of drying space. There’s a Handy Line to suit your lifestyle and living conditions and investing in one will pay off for years to come — especially considering the electricity savings now your dryer is virtually redundant. Being so lightweight and portable, Mrs Peggs Handy Line can go wherever you want — even with your washing still pegged on. With many customers still in possession of their original line more than 20 years later, these durable godsends can be moved between rooms, outside in the sun, left in the garage and even taken on camping trips. When you’re finished, just fold it up and stack it anywhere you like or hang it on the Handy Hooks on the back of your laundry door. See, convenience! Browse the entire range of Mrs Peggs Handy Lines from the comfort of your current Netflix binge and don’t forget to check out their Handy Pegs, which have an easy opening action for arthritic finger joints. They even have Afterpay, ZipPay and PayPal available, so you can pay your preferred way. Whether it’s for yourself or someone else, there’s a Mrs Peggs Handy Line solution for everyone — dry it now! Mrs Peggs Handy Lines are NDIS, DVA and My Aged Care registered.

HOW DO I GET RID OF THE DARK PATCHES UNDER MY EYES? WORDS Em Worthington PHOTOS Wayne Pearson It’s not a sin to want nice skin, and our guru is here to answer your questions.

R

ose from Elixir Skin Fitness is a kick-ass dermal therapist with the know-how and drive to give you a holistic approach to skin and gut health, and her results are undeniable. “I want you to embrace yourself by learning about the connection between skin, gut health and healthy ageing,” she says. In one consultation, Rose will get you on the road to mind-blowing results. “It’s about

understanding your body, how choices and outside factors affect us differently, then tailoring your skincare, treatment and lifestyle so you age well and feel pretty damn good!” Nothing beats a visit with Rose! Her approach is tailored to your needs and treatment is layered, but to get you motivated, here are the questions you asked…

This can be caused by too much coffee, not enough water, lack of sleep or dehydration. It’s also connected to genetics and liver function, and as we get older, the skin around our eyes thins and can show pigmentation and vascularity. Start by reducing your coffee, sugar and alcohol intake; drink two to three litres of water a day; and aim for seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Treatments that can also help include skin needling to stimulate collagen production; and using quality eye products to keep that delicate skin supple and hydrated.

DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE

Rose recently welcomed Dr John Holbrook to the Elixir team. “Having a doctor on board enables us to bring a new range of skincare that is completely tailored to your skin. After a consultation, we mix up the ingredients and give you a clean and healthy product that contains nothing nasty — only what’s needed. It’s nextlevel skincare, especially for inflammation or ageing.”

I’M 40-YEARS-OLD AND HAVE ACNE. DOCTORS PRESCRIBED ANTIBIOTICS THAT DRY MY SKIN OUT TERRIBLY AND I BURN WITHIN 10 MINS IN THE SUN. HOW CAN I RESTORE BALANCE TO MY FACE? Antibiotics will make your skin sensitive so it’s important to stay out of the sun while you’re being treated and always wear sunscreen. They work like a suppressant, so for long-term results you need to look more holistically — including the right skincare, looking at your diet, gut health and introducing probiotic supplements to restore gut and skin health. Come in and we’ll create a plan to get you on the right track.

HOW DO I REDUCE, GET RID OF OR PREVENT DARK SPOTS ON MY FACE AND BODY?

This may be hormonally driven or from excessive sun exposure (which is cumulative over the years). Treatment varies depending on the cause (which we can figure out in a consultation) and may involve targeted products or medicalgrade treatment, but in general, avoid the sun as much as possible and always wear sunscreen.

I’M AN EX-SMOKER. HOW DO I SLOW DOWN AGEING AROUND THE MOUTH?

Congratulations on giving up! Smoking builds up toxicity in the body and skin. The lack of oxygen to cells and the repetitive movement creates very deep lines and wrinkles. We can look at treatments that will detoxify the skin and rebuild collagen to help reduce them.

DIG DEEPER

Now you’ve got the bug, Elixir Education events will leave you wanting more! “Building on what we teach you in your consultation, you’ll hear from experts in the field — including naturopaths, exercise physiologists, personal trainers and more. It’s a great atmosphere with nibbles, drinks and you leave with goodies to try at home,” Rose says. For more info on these empowering events and taking hold of your own health and wellbeing, get in touch with the Elixir team.

STYLE: ECOLATERAL STORES

WORDS Millie Looker PHOTO Wayne Pearson Saving the planet just got easier with the eco experts at Ecolateral.

W

e all know that we have some serious making up to do when it comes to our beautiful planet. We’ve let Mother Nature down — but that’s where the Ecolateral Stores come in. Ecolateral is Australia’s longest running retailer specifically devoted to supplying customers with high quality, eco-friendly and sustainable products. If there’s a single-use product on the market,

FIVE STEPS TO START BECOMING AN ECO-WARRIOR

Assuming you’re already using keep-cups, refillable water bottles and reusable shopping bags (all no-brainers!) here are Jamie’s next recommended steps: 1. Use reusable produce bags. 2. Refill household cleaning product containers instead of buying new ones each time. 3. Swap toxic, chemical-filled beauty products for natural, plastic-free options. 4. Use reusable period undies, cups or pads. 5. Invest in reusable stainless steel laundry pegs.

Ecolateral works tirelessly to source a sustainable solution to fill the gap. CEO Jamie Stott and her team have recognised that with no quick fix waiting around the corner, we all need to make choices that will benefit our planet. “We want to help educate and inspire people about the importance of living more sustainable lives and then equip them with the tools and resources to do so. And we’ve been doing it for a long time.” Starting the enviro-fight 27 years ago, Ecolateral has now grown to four stores in Blackwood, Magill, Brighton and their new city store on Charles Street. Each store stocks alternative solutions to items that we use every day — and the range is enormous! Covering everything from cleaning products to party supplies, slow fashion, personal care products and so much more, you’ll quickly realise there’s no reason for us to use disposable products.

WE HAVE SOME SERIOUS MAKING UP TO DO WHEN IT COMES TO OUR BEAUTIFUL PLANET.

DOES IT TICK THE BOXES? If you’re just jumping on the ecofriendly bandwagon, it can be overwhelming to work out which products to trust. Ecolateral does the hard work for you by putting every item through their criteria… Is it sustainably sourced? Is it ethically made? Does it have zero-waste packaging? Can it be easily recycled? The list goes on, and ensures that anything you buy comes with eco-approval. As Jamie explains, “We match products to the criteria wherever possible. For instance, Onya produce bags are made from plastic, but that plastic is from recycled drink bottles. They are reusable, recyclable, replace single-use plastic produce bags and are packaged in recycled cardboard packaging. So they fit the bill!”

omad Candle Co. puts a daily indulgence right at your fingertips. Your sense of smell connects to the same part of your brain that processes emotion and memory — it makes sense that treating your nose does wonders for your whole body. Local lass Mel Barnes created her sweet-smelling business based on treasured memories. “I grew up spending a lot of time with my late grandma. We were always doing something creative in the garden, sewing, cooking or making candles,” Mel fondly recalls.

Mel started making candles in her mum’s kitchen for herself, friends and family and loved sending them off into the world to do their thing, like happy little nomads. Now, she’s fully embracing her craft in a studio in the outskirts of the Barossa and she’s ready to take you on a journey every time you light one of her masterpieces. Made from pure soy wax, Nomad candles are veganfriendly and completely biodegradable, which is perfect for Mama Nature. “My range is always evolving and has plenty of zesty fragrances for a warm, sunshiney-feel; and lots of comforting woody, earthy tones. Whatever your mood, you’ll find something to lift your spirits and take you on a little wellbeing journey.” Mel’s extending her artistry by collaborating with other local creators who inspire her. “I’ve recently released The Artist Collection, which features the incredible artwork of Natalie Broham. I’m also working with an amazing ceramicist, Guy Ringwood of Ringwood Arts Co., on unique porcelain vessels for The Artisan Collection. It’s a real treat for the senses and supports small businesses in the process.” Making these mood-boosters affordable for everyone, Nomad also offers melts, reed diffusers and refills, so setting the scene doesn’t need to break the bank.

TREATING YOUR NOSE DOES WONDERS FOR YOUR WHOLE BODY. Where can you find these bundles of joy? Order them online with a click of your fingers, keep your eyes peeled in plenty of good stores across SA, or look out for Mel at any of SA’s best markets — she’s a delight and meeting her just adds to the feel-good experience. “I love a good market — it’s a great opportunity to chat with people, get feedback on what they love and it can inspire new ideas.” With so many challenges in this hectic world, putting a match to a Nomad candle is a simple way to add a little self-care and joy into your day. STYLE: ALEXANDRA LINGERIE WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Elliott Thompson Big-breasted women should have the confidence to wear bathers without popping out all over the place.

O

ur French big boob expert, Alexandra Lingerie, specialises in personalised bra fittings for women with big boobs. And exciting news — this gorgeous lingerie shop now extends to swimwear! “Bathers have always fitted my body but not my boobs. If I bought bathers according to my dress size, my breasts would be popping out everywhere. But if I went up a size to fit my 8Js, then my bathers would fall off me — I couldn’t win,” says owner Alexandra. So, in her Adelaide Arcade store, she decided to stock a swimwear range that fits just like a bra, keeping everything in. Her bathers are beautiful and give women the confidence to flock to the beach — and there’s a style for every Adelady. “We offer one-piece bathers, tankinis and bikinis ranging from an 8 to 20, and D to J-cups — whatever you feel most amazing in.” Whether you’re an apple, a pear, an hourglass or a string bean, you’ll find bathers to suit your body type. And we all know you can’t buy bathers like you can a t-shirt — you need to be fitted properly. “As a curvy chick, I know exactly how it feels to be weighed down by an ill-fitting bra. Back pain, shoulder pain and headaches — no, thank you! It still blows my mind that some women haven’t had a proper bra fitting since they were sixteen.”

Bounce less

Your large breasts shouldn’t stop you from exercising. But at the same time, you don’t want to get knocked out by your bazookas hitting you in the face when you run. Alexandra stocks Panache Sport, a sportswear brand that reduces 80 percent of the bounce. “These sports bras are designed to help beat the bounce so your boobs don’t get damaged, and to flatter, keeping them in and up. It’s life changing for bigger-boobed women.”

Alexandra prides herself on her personalised fitting service where you’ll walk away wearing the correct fitting bra for your body type 100 percent of the time. It also helps that she’s super warm, honest and supportive, just like the bras she sells!

Going up a size

Exciting news for Alexandra. “We’re expanding by moving to a double store with more space, more stock and bigger fitting rooms!” But they’re still located in Adelaide Arcade, because Alexandra wouldn’t have it any other way. “Adelaide Arcade is gorgeous with all its history and ambience, and my neighbours are so lovely. We all look after each other and promote each other's businesses — I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

WHETHER YOU’RE AN APPLE, A PEAR, AN HOURGLASS OR A STRING BEAN, YOU’LL FIND BATHERS TO SUIT YOUR BODY TYPE. She gets it

“As a woman with an 8J bra size, I had so much trouble finding bras that fit well and made me feel great. I completed my professional fitting training in one of France’s top lingerie boutiques and still struggled to find options for my size. What young woman would be happy facing a lifetime of wearing granny bras every day? Not me! So, at just 23, I set out to change the industry and the lives of thousands of women with it.” @alexandralingerie alexandra-lingerie.com.au

Who dis?

Fleurieu's first choice painters, Ready Set Paint brings homes to life from Victor Harbor to the Adelaide CBD. With owner Ben Greenwood leading a team of brush bosses, you’re in trustworthy hands for quality advice and a jaw-dropping result. “I get excited by the before and after — being able to completely transform a space and adding value to a home. People put off painting thinking it will turn their lives upside down, but it doesn’t have to! We know it’s a big deal letting us into your space, so we keep things neat and respect your homes, like they’re our own. Give us a call and we’ll put together something that wows with minimal interruption to your life,” Ben says. Saddle up, here’s what these lovely legends did for us… Our little cottage on Mary Street in Unley is the ultimate base when we’re not zipping around SA. But, she’s WELL over 100-years-old and needed a little love injection to bring the Adelady vibe to life. Ben and his team rolled in, masked up and totally transformed our digs, making it a joy to turn the key in the door every day.

From consult to result

With an unlimited budget, it’s likely we would’ve gone too far with quirky wallpaper! Luckily, Ben’s head is screwed on and in one visit he gave us a solid plan to give us the best bang for our buck. On the cards were two big ticket items — wallpaper and paint — and in just five days, our little office came to life. “There are endless options when it comes to wallpaper — it’s a great way of giving a space character. You can find what you want or we can track it down, - 90

even if it comes from the other side of the globe,” Ben says. “For the Adelady office, Kristy found a vibrant tropical print from Crowie’s and I popped into their Malvern store to organise quantities — all she had to do was pay over the phone. I knew that making the front door a feature would tie in with the wallpaper and make it stand out from the road. Then, we framed the front of the office by painting the dull cream picket fence and woodwork with a crisp, bright white, topped off by painting the concrete verandah charcoal grey to complement the stonework and make it pop.” So, for a team of fully qualified, licenced and insured painting pros, follow the easy peasy steps on their website for a free quote and let your walls come to life! @readysetpaintadl

When it comes to painting your home, basic is best! It’s amazing what a professional paint job using quality products can do. “Everyone’s gone back to a minimalistic feel,” says Ben. “We’re inundated with requests for crisp white walls, which leaves a home feeling clean, calm and allows you to use features to personalise your sanctuary.” Ben and his team are ready and set to do anything that involves paint, including cladding, render, textured walls, clear finish timber and painted features. Depending on your needs and budget, they’ll match the products perfectly — including everything from a standard line to washable paint — super handy when little monsters go to town with grubby fingerprints or Sharpies on your walls.

STYLE: GATHERED DESIGN MARKET

WORDS Hayley Pearson There’s nothing as delightful as a day spent shopping at Gathered Design Market.

P

roudly South Australian, Gathered showcases unique, locally-made products under one roof. You’ll be stretched to find anything that you’d see in a chain shop — it’s the perfect opportunity to find one-off pieces of art, jewellery, fashion and homewares to add extra pizzazz to your home or office. And with every purchase, you’re supporting local independent designers. Now, that’s satisfying! For six years, Gathered Design Market has built up a strong tribe of loyal fans, both on social media and in person — and it’s now SA’s most anticipated design market, holding fabulous events four times a year.

MY VENDORS ARE THE STARS — THEY MAKE GATHERED WHAT IT IS.

ADELADY + GATHERED FASHION WEEKEND Superstar creator and events extraordinaire Jenna is extremely modest, so you’ll never hear her tooting her own horn. “My vendors are the stars — they make Gathered what it is, and I love giving them a platform to sell their work and shine in front of a new audience.” Gathered is the perfect stage for small business owners to grow. “Over the last six years, I’ve seen vendors expand from teeny tiny one-person stalls to having a permanent shop or stocking their products in boutiques all over SA — it makes me so proud,” Jenna says. Gathered also gives you the opportunity to meet and be the maker with their creative workshops. Whether you’re dyeing your own silk scarf with local botanicals, painting ceramics or designing your own jewellery, you’ll have a ball and come home with your very own piece of art! With great designers, comes great food and drink vendors — there are plenty to choose from and, of course, they’re all South Australian. Nothing beats homemade gozleme, packed full of flavour and oozing cheese, spinach or Turkish sausage.

We love Gathered so much that we’ve teamed up with Jenna to combine our two loves — fashion and markets! The Adelady + Gathered Fashion Weekend happens twice a year and puts 100 local fashion brands and boutiques on display under one roof. The little piggy that went to market had the right idea because Gathered is licensed — kick back, enjoy live music, eat local produce and sip on a Chesterfield Whisky cocktail or a vino from XO Wine Co. Whether you're a market lover or a local creative, keep your eyes peeled for the next Gathered Design Market. “People who come to Gathered, come to shop — they always leave with their hands full of bags,” smiles Jenna. @gatheredsa gatheredsa.com.au

Colour me happy

STYLE: TANIA ALIIS LAPIDGE

WORDS Em Worthington A painting by Tania Aliis Lapidge is like a confetti gun of happiness for your walls and a burst of sunshine for your soul.

T

here’s no way you can miss the good vibes that radiate out of a piece by local artist Tania. Her big, bold, neon abstracts are all different, but Tania’s positive outlook shines through in each one. “I don’t have a set style, but I’m clearly colour obsessed,” Tania laughs. “I want people to feel the happiness I have when creating them — it comes through in all the colours and movement. And you’ll always see something different; a new little area that you love, every time you look at them.”

“I WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL THE HAPPINESS I HAVE WHEN CREATING THEM.” Growing up in the vibrant Unley area, Tania got the artistic-bug when she was just a whipper-snapper. “My parents had an art and framing business, so I was around it from an early age. Then, my Year 5 teacher was heavily into Van Gough and I caught her enthusiasm, but it was an Art Camp in Uluru that really sealed the deal when I was in Year 11. It was an amazing opportunity to mix with the indigenous students and see what they were doing,” she says. Tania went on to study Visual Communications (Graphic Design) at UniSA, followed by Visual Arts at the South Australian School of Art, but she names nature as one of her biggest inspirations. “My husband and I have done a lot of travel around Australia. We did a fantastic trip through the Nullarbor — the colour combinations in nature and the scenery is something I still draw on when painting today.”

Her family is right behind her — her dad frames the masterpieces and while becoming a mum to sons Ollie and Ari has made things more hectic, it hasn’t slowed Tania down one bit. Open for commissions and custom work, she’s always experimenting with different techniques and materials. “For my latest series, ‘In Full Bloom’, I used alcohol inks which work very differently. Then I hand-applied the gold foil, which is a signature of my pieces and a nice added bit of glitz.” Jump onto Tania’s website or social to get a glimpse of her incredible pieces — we guarantee you’ll get that feel-good buzz that she so expertly conveys with her colourful creations. @taniaaliisart taniaaliisart.com

STYLE: VOTRE LUXE

Labels and love WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Wayne Pearson What happens when you fall out of love with the luxury items in your wardrobe? You set them free.

How does it work?

If you have a high-end item at home that you think deserves a new home, either make an appointment with Maggie and her fabulous team go to the Votre Luxe website and fill in the selling form. For anything that sells for under $3,000, Votre Luxe takes a very reasonable 20 percent commission on the sale; and if an item sells between $3,000 and $5,000, they only take 15 percent. “I much prefer our products to keep moving to make it exciting for our customers, so we always have new products online and in-store.”

K

ing William Road’s Votre Luxe gives your designer handbags and accessories a new forever home. Owner Maggie Qu realised her obsession with labels had reached a point where she could start her own online shop selling her pre-loved bags and watches to her besties. “I hated seeing upset bags in my home just sitting there, not getting any love. My personal collection had over twenty items that were all in immaculate condition, so I started selling them to my friends... and then used that money to buy more.” In a light bulb moment, Maggie realised that her little hobby could actually be a brilliant business idea for like-minded women. “People in Asia and Europe have been selling high quality pre-loved

“I HATED SEEING UPSET BAGS IN MY HOME JUST SITTING THERE, NOT GETTING ANY LOVE.” brands for years, but there was nothing in Adelaide quite like it.” Maggie decided to set up shop and now, label-loving women can buy and sell high-end, pre-loved bags. And so, this environmentally conscious way of rehoming luxury items took off, and Maggie learned how to authenticate items. “Being able to authenticate brands is paramount in this industry, so I was expertly trained by the best of the best, a well-known authenticator in China.” Now a gorgeous bricks-and-mortar store on King William Road in Hyde Park, Votre Luxe is a place where you can buy and sell designer handbags and accessories. Maggie offers a selection of rare vintage labels as well as the latest trends from Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Fendi, Gucci — the list goes on.

STYLE: VOTRE LUXE

More than handbags

“Our initial offering of designer bags has now expanded to include jewellery, accessories, shoes and watches. Each piece goes through a meticulous selection process, so our clients can expect the best labels in the best condition.”

“We are also lucky enough to uncover some unique products like vintage, discontinued and limited edition pieces.” They even have Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags coming through, which apparently is a big deal for those in the know. “Hermès boutiques really only give their VIPs access to these exclusive brands so you may never get the chance to see or feel one in real life.” In French, ‘votre luxe’ translates to ‘your luxury’, and that’s what the brand is all about. As you step inside the store, you’ll most likely slip into a dreamlike state, surrounded by every label of bag you’ve ever dreamed about.

And you wouldn’t even know they’d been loved before. “I’m quite picky about the product — we only accept items in great condition and our clients are the same. Anything under nine-out-of-ten is not acceptable.” As we all know, a great bag is a big investment — it’s something you think long and hard about before purchasing. “What I love most is giving women who love labels the peace of mind that if they buy an original and fall out of love with it, they can always sell it and not lose. It’s actually become a fun game — my regulars buy an original, wear it a few times, then sell and buy another piece.” @votreluxeau votreluxe.com.au

STYLE: WOHLERS

WORDS Hayley Pearson PHOTOS Wayne Pearson Sometimes you need a good room refresh, and the best way to do that is with a big splash of colour!

F

or 33 years, Adelaide favourite Wohlers Furniture & Homewares has consistently served up great quality furniture and homewares at their three stores — Mount Barker, Richmond and Tanunda.

PRETTY IN PINK

YOU ARE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE

This bright yellow buffet has moved around my house more times than a couch surfer in London. It started off in the living room, then had a few days in our hallway before my kids decided they’d grow (again) and needed extra storage space for their clothes. So, this yellow buffet is now the hero of their bedroom and the perfect home for their socks, undies and secret toy stash.

Whether it’s with Nordic recliners, LaZboy Lounges, theatre suites, dining, bedroom, office or outdoor furniture, this family-owned business is forever growing their range and listening to what their loyal customers want. Cue the Made By Wohlers, Boho Buffet collection. Now, this is exactly what Adeladies want! Beautifully handcrafted, these babies come in a massive range of colours, like fire engine red, sunshine yellow, aqua and hot pink. The Boho Buffets are a true statement piece that light up any room and you don’t have to worry about your bestie or mum having the same buffet in their living room (insert rolling-eye emoji) because you can work with James Wohlers to custom design and make your own unique piece… just like we did!

Lauren welcomed her beautiful baby, Sofia Dalla Fay Burgess, in June 2021. At the 20-week scan, Lauren and her partner Ryan found out the gender and within a few days, this hot pink buffet was being designed — of course, the colour was kept hush-hush around town. Now sitting perfectly in Sofia’s nursery covered in teddies and photographs, it’s become a family keepsake. So, why not release your inner Boho goddess? Pop into your closest Wohlers store and start designing!
