about this

Issue

Community is at the core of what makes Vermont such an extraordinary place to live. Knowing your neighbor, shopkeeper, hairdresser, banker, or car mechanic by name is what helps us stick together. Volunteering and engaging in public conversations, knowing that your voice can actually make a difference, is what keeps us engaged. That is what this special section, Profiles in Community, is all about. Each individual and each business, institution or organization has a role to play that’s unique. And through each of our efforts, we create a vibrant community. We encourage you to spend some time with this thick special supplement and take time out of your busy day to reflect on the importance of working together to make our towns and state a great place to live and work, while also recognizing that one of the joys of living in small towns is getting to know one another and the sense that we are all part of a greater whole. In our daily interactions we greet each other in many different settings: as customer and retailer, client and professional, neighbor and friend. Sometimes it’s an impromptu chat on Main Street or at a school function; sometimes it’s a lively exchange at town meeting; sometimes it’s just a friendly wave or a nod at the post office or in a store. It’s a common interaction, often overlooked, but it makes living here more personal, more intimate, more rewarding. That’s the root of this special section. For the past 30 years, we have published it to help our readers know a little bit more about the people who play such a vital role in our communities. In this year’s section, we visited more than 150 area businesses to snap their photos, introduce their teams and tell their unique stories. While the stories vary widely, the focus within each story serves as a tribute to the hard-working employees and employers who make each business the success that it is. We hope you enjoy these pages and that you take the time to reacquaint yourself with these businesses — and the names of their employees. Our close-knit communities have much to offer, not only in products and services, but also in the smiles of those who greet us each day and the thanks we offer in return. The Editors

JOHN BAKER CREATED THIS set of iron railings at the Orvis outlet store in Manchester; they are among his proudest achievements.

John Baker makes ‘stuff people can use’

By EMMA COTTON ADDISON — At the base of Snake Mountain, edged against a wild, expansive field, sits John Baker’s workshop. Inside the rustic structure, half-finished railings lean against wooden paneled walls, dark from a fire that burned the shop 15 years ago. Long blocks of steel lay across on tabletops and stools, soon to be molded in the forge that looms in the back. On one recent morning, Baker, the owner, founder and only fulltime employee of Wildflower Ironworks in Addison, bent over a large square of steel pipe — the beginnings of

a dresser. He methodically sprayed black paint up and down its metal edges while his dog, Bo, sprawled at the end of the workbench. Baker has several projects in the works, but in recent years has focused mainly on railings that have become iconic around Addison County. Those at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater and the Middlebury Bike Shop are two of his more recognizable pieces, but many of the iron railings around the county — and even the state — have come from Baker’s workshop. He is perhaps proudest of an extensive project at the Orvis outlet store in Manchester. A set of iron railings on the store’s second floor mirrors the pond scene it overlooks — thin blades of metal grass, a bird in flight, and two swimming ducks are integrated into the décor. “I don’t remember the process, I just know I did it all,” he said. “It was a huge project, over the course of a year.” Now, Baker is working on railings for a porch in a private home. While the bottom halves of the railings are simple and functional, the top, just below the handrail bar, feature lavish iron curls. He said he can IN RECENT YEARS Baker has focused mainly on rail- make about five curls, which are somewhere around six ings that have become iconic around Addison County.

inches in length, every hour, and the finished project will need 70. Baker founded Wildflower Ironworks in the 1970s, after he graduated from Middlebury College. He took a forging class in Frog Hollow and found he had a knack for working with metal. “I had never done anything like this before, but I just stuck with it,” he said. Baker puzzled over what to name his business — his mentor had named his “New Day Ironworks.” “I didn’t want it to just be ‘John Baker’s Iron Shop,’” he said. His explanation for using “Wildflowers”: Those were the days of the hippies. “It became memorable in a sense, though,” he said. The native of New Jersey left after graduation to weld around the country, and then came back to Vermont, where his business began to grow. He started doing craft shows and repairing machinery for farmers, and he found that he liked creating things that were functional. “I don’t do a lot of really ornate stuff,” he said. “That’s just my character. I like making stuff that people can use.” Still, he dabbles in creative projects. For a woman who has a view of Camel’s Hump from her backyard, Baker made an interior railing illustrating the mountain. Since then, Baker has had no shortage of projects. His website receives enough hits that it now appears near the top of the list on

Google. And because he’s been in the business for so long, word of mouth has benefitted him greatly. “I’ve got all I need between now and winter,” he said, adding that he stays in the shop until nearly 9 p.m. to finish some projects. Though business is booming, Baker — a father of three with one grandson and another on the way — is looking to take more time for himself, and he enjoys canoeing or relaxing

on his property. “I’m trying to take better care of me,” he said. But he enjoys having left his mark around the county and state, and he appreciates the diversity that comes with his career, working on one project for a few weeks, and then switching to something new. “The variety has been good for me,” he said. “I wouldn’t just want to be a production welder, and I wouldn’t just want to do pipe railings.”

WELCOME TO A DINNER DESTINATION FOR EVERYONE. 51 MAIN AT THE BRIDGE WAS BORN OUT OF A VISION THAT A group of Middlebury College students had for improving social life at the College, back in 2007. They envisioned a sophisticated, international social space where people of all ages and all walks of life could come together for conversation, good music and art, and a place for the college community to mingle with the greater area population. The name was created to not only speak to the restaurant’s geographic location — on the south side of the bridge — but also in reference to the place as a bridge between town and college, a bridge for artists to present their talents to the public, and a bridge for personal growth through shared experiences. 51 Main is open to all who want to experience the beautiful setting, great food with an international flair and music and art that changes in style and presentation regularly. Our mission is to attract many different musical genres, never falling into a niche by type of music. Art exhibits include young artists as well as professional artists with exhibits changing regularly. 51 Main at the Bridge is informal yet sophisticated. It is open to all ages and families are encouraged to come and share the fun together. No reservations are required and there is never a cover charge. Karen LaFlamme is the Manager of 51 Main at the Bridge; Starr Ricupero is the chef. Both invite you to say hello on your next visit to 51 Main!

Having such a fabulous shop in my community is priceless. The folks who run the shop always ask what I’m working on and help me design projects. I’m often tempted to bring in my finished projects to show them what I’ve done with their yarn. I’ve never had that impulse before. - Ellen Repstad Gadue

I love Yarn & Yoga! I am newly retired and have always wanted to learn how to knit and crochet, and have also been interested in learning yoga. Yarn & Yoga has fulfilled both of those wishes. I took four knitting classes and am now addicted! The shop is beautiful, as are the women that own it! - Linda Paskiewicz

By going to the Wed morning yoga class at Yarn and Yoga, not only has my body become stronger and more limber, but my heart & mind have stretched to consider new ways of being. - Skilty Johnson I feel welcomed, supported and challenged in mind, body and soul. The back of the yarn shop is soft and colorful – a perfect place to breathe and be! - Patti Padua

I started yoga to cure a severe hip thing. It’s working and I continue to get me more flexible while strengthening my back and hips. You “guys” don’t know what you’re missing! - Ed McGuire L-R: Skilty Johnson, Patti Padua, Ed McGuire, Kimball Butler, Barbara Conner

Starting my day with a yoga class is perfect! The stretching, strengthening, centering, laughing and community sets me up for the rest of the day. - Barbara Conner

I am not a morning person, but my morning Yarn and Yoga class is so exceptionally wonderful on so many levels that I am actually happy to get up! - Kimball Butler

Some locals might remember back to 1983 when Bill Shafer started a small music shop on Main Street called Otter Music. About a year later with his feet squarely under him, Shafer moved the business to Burlington under the name Advance Music. Advance Music Center quickly became the largest music store in the state. Shafer drifted from the music industry in the late 90’s to pursue farming while he was raising his children and then to purchase and operate the Marquis Theater in Middlebury from 2008 to 2016, but now finds himself back in the industry. The Online Guitar Store opened in July, 2016 and responds to a dramatic shift in the market toward digital sales and trading, Shafer said. The collection ranges from factory refurbished electric and acoustic guitars to quality preowned instruments, accessories and parts, which are sold at an excellent price and with the security of knowing that a self-proclaimed “guitar junkie” has given it his blessing.

By SAM HARTLEY Walk into the Middlebury town office and you’re liable to see Ann Webster, the long-time town clerk. Addison Independent reporter Sam Hartley talked to Webster about her job and about her life. Q: How did you become town clerk of Middlebury and when? A: I’ve lived in town all my life. My aunt worked for the town of Middlebury for many, many years, so I was very familiar with the municipal offices. Dick Goodro was the town clerk and treasurer and was stepping down so they were going to be appointing someone until the next election date. I applied at that time and I was actually not appointed. They appointed someone named Jon Pominville. He served most of his term, but then he stepped down also. I had been actually been working at Vermont Bicycle Touring in Bristol, in their finance department. That was right before 9/11 hit. Vermont Bicycle Touring at that time had tours and trips all over the world. Most of their trips at the time they were doing overseas. Very soon after that I was laid-off. So this position came open again and I applied. I started here Veteran’s Day, actually, in 2001. I like working in the town that I live in. I like working in a small town. This is where I was born, this is where I grew up. I’ve traveled some, but most of my life I’ve been right here. Q: What aspect of your job do you most look forward to? A: What I most look forward to is the fact that there is so much variety. What we’re busy doing depends on the time of year and which year it is. We’re responsible for all the land recording that comes in. Any transfers of property or anything that affects land ownership in Middlebury comes through our office. That’s kind of all year long. We have years where that’s constant and non-stop. Then you might have an economic downturn where that slows down a bit. We’re also responsible for recording the documents for vital records

for the town. Any birth, death or marriage that’s happening here or to the residents, we file that here. We oversee elections. This is a pretty big year for us in terms of elections.

I’ve gone to Hawaii and just really loved being near the ocean there. I’ve been to the ocean in several places. I’ve had a fantastic trip to Malta. That was really fun. I went to Gambia. That’s a very interesting place. I would love to go back there.

Q: Which living person do you most admire and why? A: If I wasn’t looking on a real Q: What aspect of your job do local level and it was someone more you least look forward to? worldly or famous then I would say A: It really the Dalai depends on Lama would the day. JUDI AND FRED Danforth founded their namesake pewter company in 1975. Although they are stepping back from many responsibilities at the Middlebury business, they are still directly involved in the local workshop.

“My pride is in how our products are made,” he explained, “such as coming up with tricks to do things that haven’t been done before in pewter and ensuring that ours is the finest quality pewter in the world. I think we are doing a good job at that.” Innovation at Danforth Pewter extends beyond the techniques of crafting with pewter. The company is constantly coming up with new designs, from the annual Christmas ornaments to lines of products that are altogether new. The search for new product ideas continues even when the Danforths are on vacation.

Fred and Judi return from each trip with lists of new ideas and rough sketches gathered from the different things they encountered on their trips. “The business is thriving because we’re introducing new things all the time,” Fred explained. It is challenging, but customers have responded well to these changes. Fred and Judi are very receptive to the suggestions and feedback of their staff and customers for new product ideas. Because a large portion of their clientele is long-time, regular customers, the Danforths want them to be satisfied with their products.

“It’s fun for customers to see new products,” Fred said. Although design innovation is crucial for the company, Fred continues to see utility as the fundamental purpose of Danforth Pewter. Danforth Pewter is part of a long tradition of creating pristine, well-finished products to the community so that each individual customer may come to cherish it as their own unique piece. “First (the pewterware) is just pretty to look at, but when you use it, it’s great to use and you never use anything else,” Taddeo laughed.

Their son, Marc, joined the business 20 years ago, and today they have expanded to selling and installing boat lifts and docks, as well as servicing motor boats and snowmobiles. Service, however, has always been the heart of their business. With more than 45 years of experience working on boats (Gill started in 1970 at Vergennes Marine and since 1983 out of their home in Salisbury), Gill has seen it all and knows boats and engines inside and out. Marc has also been working on engines — boats, go-carts and snowmobiles — for more than 20 years and says of working with his Dad that he has “learned from the best.” Granddaughter Morgan, a recent graduate at Green Mountain College and neice of Marc’s, has been part of the family business for the past four years in the front office and in the boat yard in the summers.

Along with their service and sales business, they also offer boat storage, featuring 78 covered spaces for winter storage, plus outside storage for boats not requiring shelter. Boat owners who have their boats stored at Gill’s Place also get their boats tuned up, washed and delivered in time for summer simply by calling at least a week ahead of expected delivery.

Insurance Approved Discounts

Jeanne, not pictured, has served as bookkeeper, and errand-runner, of the business for the past 33 years. Of their marriage of 50-plus years, and their teamwork in business, she says simply: “we work good together; always have.”

BETSY SPANNBAUER Healing Touch Therapy Practioner Healing Touch is a therapy that helps restore and balance energy that has been depleted due to stress, illness, injury, grief, medical conditions, surgery or medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. When an individual has pain, the practioner focuses on removing the energy congestion so that the pain level is reduced. Think of times when you have been stressed and how it affected your body. You may have experienced muscle tightness in your neck and shoulders, developed a headache or had discomfort in other parts of your body. Stress causes congestion in our energy system. Healing Touch techniques help to relieve that congestion.

Sunrise Orchards is a 200 acre, family owned and operated, wholesale apple farm located in Cornwall, VT. We are devoted to growing excellent apples for our local community as well as the entire Northeast region. We average about 130,000 bushels of apples each year, although it varies widely depending on weather. We grow many varieties such as McIntosh, Empire, Cortland, Honeycrisp, Macoun, Red Delicious, Jonagold, Granny Smith, Gala and Paula Red, as well as many cider specific varieties. In mid-August, harvest begins at Sunrise Orchards and we also start to pack and distribute our apples through our local delivery route all over Vermont and outside the state to markets in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. We store about half of our crop in refrigerated and controlled atmosphere storage (at Vermont Refrigerated Storage in Shoreham, VT) and pack it throughout the winter and spring, continuing to distribute to all of our customers. In mid-May, just about when we finish selling all the apples, we start a new season all over again with a beautiful bloom.
