Almost  every  time  I  checked  the  game  camera  last  summer  —  whether  it  was  stationed  near  the  FRPSRVW SRLQWHG LQWR WKH ÂżHOG RU hidden  at  the  edge  of  the  woods  —  I  found  photos  of  one  of  our  region’s  most  outwardly  endear- ing  creatures:  the  rac- coon.  With  their  black  masks  under  perfect  white  eyebrows,  their  petite  black  noses,  fuzzy  ears,  and  fetch- ingly  striped  bushy  tails,  raccoons  are  certainly  charming  to  look  at.  But  that  soft  and  cuddly  exterior  belies  D ÂżHUFH DQG KLJKO\ LQWHOOLJHQW GLV- position.  If  curiosity  killed  the  cat,  it’s  put Â

more  than  one  raccoon  into  a  bind,  too.  When  I  was  a  little  girl,  a  rac- coon  at  a  wildlife  sanctuary  reached  ORQJ ÂżQJHUV IURP LWV HQFORVXUH DQG snagged  the  beaded  hair  tie  right  off  the  end  of  my  braid.  Among  the  things  raccoons  are  curious  about,  apparently,  is  items  that  sparkle  in  the  sun.  Clever  trappers  have  been  known  to  catch  a  raccoon  with  a  scrap  of  shiny  aluminum  foil  as  bait. That  inherent  —  and  sometimes  dangerous  —  curiosity  is  a  sign  of  intelligence,  said  Dave  Er- ler,  senior  naturalist  at  Squam  Lakes  Natural  Science  Center  in  Holder- ness,  N.H.  This  intelligence  makes  raccoons  adept  problem-Âsolvers,  and  enables  them  to  adapt  to  differ- ent  habitats  and  f o o d Â

sources.  They  live  just  about  any- ZKHUH WKH\ FDQ ÂżQG ZDWHU IURP forested  areas  and  wetlands  to  agri- cultural  landscapes  and  urban  neigh- borhoods,  where  these  nocturnal  animals  often  get  into  trouble  for  raiding  the  chicken  coop  —  or  the  trash  cans  left  at  the  curb. They  will  eat  just  about  anything.  Birds,  eggs,  small  mammals,  cray- ¿VK IUXLW FDUULRQ DQG ² \HV ² KX- man  garbage,  gardens  and  poultry  are  all  on  the  menu.  Although  raccoons  are  known  for  “washingâ€?  their  food,  they’re  really  using  their  front  paws  to  search  for,  examine  and  dissect  food  before  eating.  They  have  highly  developed  nerves  in  their  front  paws,  which  become  more  sensitive  when  immersed  in  water. The  perceived  washing  habit  plays  LQWR ERWK WKH UDFFRRQÂśV VFLHQWLÂżF DQG common  names.  “Raccoonâ€?  is  from  an  Algonquin  word  “aroughcoune,â€?  meaning  “one  who  scratches  with  KLV KDQGV ´ 7KH UDFFRRQÂśV VFLHQWLÂżF name,  Procyon  lotor,  breaks  down  to  “dog-Âlikeâ€?  (although  raccoons  are  VFLHQWLÂżFDOO\ PRUH FORVHO\ UHODWHG WR bears)  and  “washer.â€? Beyond  helping  raccoons  exam- ine  food  and  unlatch  chicken  coops  and  trashcans,  their  sensitive  feet,  ZLWK ÂżYH ORQJ GLJLWV DQG VKDUS FODZV also  come  in  handy  for  climbing  WUHHV 7KHLU PRGLÂżHG DQNOH MRLQWV can  turn  out  180  degrees,  allowing  the  animals  to  scamper  down  trees  frontwards  or  backwards.  Raccoons  will  climb  and  swim  in  streams  while  searching  for  food,  but  these  skills  also  come  in  handy  when  they’re  try- ing  to  evade  danger.  “They  are  only  average  in  their  [swimming]  ability,â€?  said  Erler.  “But  they  will  take  readily  to  water  if  pur- sued  and  are  very  capable  of  drown- ing  pursuers  like  dogs‌by  grabbing  and  holding  the  pursuer’s  head  under  water.â€? Now,  as  the  days  grow  colder  and  darker,  raccoons  —  like  many  wild  a n i - mals  —  are  busy  eating  as  PXFK DV WKH\ FDQ ÂżQG a n d  building  up  an  extra  layer  of  fat.  Although Â
they  don’t  hibernate,  raccoons  do  hole  up  in  dens  during  the  bitter- est  days  of  winter  and  are  able  to  sleep  for  long  stretches  of  time  —  up  to  a  month  —  without  heading  out  into  the  elements.  The  extra  layer  of  fat  they  add  during  the  fall  —  about  one-Âthird  of  their  total  weight  —  helps  provide  in- sulation,  along  with  a  heavy  coat  of  coarse  fur.  Raccoons,  though  typically  solitary  creatures,  will  sometimes  den  in  groups  during  very  cold  weather. Dens  range  from  tree  cavi- ties  and  underground  burrows  to  abandoned  buildings  and,  sometimes,  unused  chimneys.  And  raccoons  are  not  above  kick- ing  some  other  animal  out  of  its  warm  den  to  take  over. “Raccoons  are  extremely  pow- erful  animals  for  their  size  (15- 35  pounds),  but  are  still  able  to  squeeze  into  and  through  small  openings.  They  are  capable  of  displacing  skunks  and  foxes  from  their  dens  if  the  situation  warrants,â€?  Erler  said.  “They’re  smart  enough  to  stay  clear  of  larger  predators  as  much  as  pos- sible  and  avoid  denning  where  they  would  be  exposed  to  larger  predators  like  coyotes.â€? Cute  and  clever?  Troublesome  bandit?  Whatever  your  percep- tion  of  these  curious  critters,  rac- coons  are  so  common  through- out  the  region  that  chances  are,  they’re  among  your  wild  neigh- bors.  I’ll  be  looking  for  their  tracks  through  the  snow  around  WKH IRUHVWV DQG ÂżHOGV GXULQJ warmer  days  this  winter  –  and  checking  the  game  camera  for  glimpses  of  masked  faces  and  ringed  tails. ADDISON  COUNTY  —  On  this  past  Sunday,  Oct.  23,  Vermont  State  Police  responded  at  a  little  past  5  p.m.  to  a  report  of  a  single-Âvehicle  rollover  crash  on  Monkton  Road  in  Monkton. While  en  route  to  the  crash,  a  by- stander  reported  the  driver  had  taken  off  into  the  woods.  Vergennes  police  responded  to  as- sist  and  provide  a  K-Â9  to  track  the  driver. Police  found  the  driver,  36-Âyear- old  Ian  Nye  of  Ferrisburgh,  walking  on  Hollow  Road  in  Monkton  approx- imately  two  hours  later. The  vehicle,  a  2009  GMC  Sierra,  appeared  to  be  a  total  loss.  Nye  was  transported  to  Porter  Medical  Center  for  evaluation  of  cuts  and  processed  for  driving  under  WKH LQĂ€XHQFH $ SUHOLPLQDU\ EUHDWK test  at  Porter  showed  that  his  blood  alcohol  content  was  0.125  percent;Íž  the  legal  limit  for  driving  is  0.08. Police  cited  Nye  for  driving  under  WKH LQĂ€XHQFH VHFRQG RIIHQVH In  other  recent  activity,  troopers: •  Investigated  a  one-Âvehicle  crash  that  occurred  in  Shoreham  at  a  little  after  2  p.m.  on  Oct.  20.  State  police  report  that  Amanda  Lawlor,  27,  of  Burlington  was  driving  a  2011  GMC  truck  on  Palmer  Road  near  Bates  Road  on  an  overcast  and  rainy  day  when  she  moved  over  to  the  right  shoulder  to  avoid  a  collision  with  another  vehicle.  Her  truck  drove  into  the  ditch  and  collided  with  a  tree  FDXVLQJ WKH DLUEDJ WR LQĂ€DWH /DZORU was  taken  to  the  Shorewell  Clinic  for  medical  evaluation  of  a  thumb  inju- ry. •  On  Oct.  20  at  4  p.m.  responded  to  a  minor  three-Âcar  crash  involving  a  Brandon  woman  at  the  intersec- tion  of  Routes  7  and  3  in  Pittsford.  According  to  police,  23-Âyear-Âold Â
Ashleigh  A.  Capek-ÂDisorda  of  Bran- don  was  second  in  a  line  of  cars  stopped  for  a  vehicle  making  a  turn,  when  a  car  behind  her  failed  to  stop  and  rear-Âended  Capek-ÂDisorda’s  2011  Chevrolet  Cruze,  driving  it  into  the  car  stopped  in  front  of  her.  No  one  was  injured  and  three  vehicles  sustained  minor  damage. •  On  Saturday,  Oct.  22,  at  quarter  past  midnight  saw  a  vehicle  operat- ing  erratically  while  traveling  south- bound  on  Route  7  in  Middlebury.  Troopers  stopped  the  car,  saw  signs  of  impairment  in  the  driver,  and  screened  her  for  driving  under  the  LQĂ€XHQFH 3ROLFH DUUHVWHG &U\VWLQD B.  Hulst,  39,  of  Salisbury  and  cited  KHU IRU GULYLQJ XQGHU WKH LQĂ€XHQFH of  drugs  and  for  resisting  arrest  be- cause  she  actively  resisted  troopers’  efforts  to  place  her  in  handcuffs.  •  On  Oct.  22  at  approximately  11:09  a.m.  received  a  report  that  a  car  had  crashed  on  Route  7  in  Pitts- IRUG DQG WKH PDOH GULYHU KDG Ă€HG the  scene  on  foot.  Police  said  they  IRXQG WKH GULYHU LGHQWLÂżHG DV 5LFKLH J.  Montani,  51,  of  Bristol.  Montani’s  1998  Subaru  Legacy  had  been  trav- eling  northbound  and  left  the  east  side  of  the  roadway,  entered  a  ditch  and  went  airborne,  landing  a  short  distance  away.  Police  said  Montani  exhibited  signs  of  drug  impairment,  so  police  had  him  screened  by  a  Drug  Recognition  Expert;Íž  Montani  refused  to  provide  a  blood  sample.  Police  cited  Montani  for  driving  un- GHU WKH LQĂ€XHQFH DQG QHJOLJHQW GULY- ing.

Club plans outings for youngsters ADDISON  COUNTY  —  The  Bread  Loaf  Section  of  the  Green  Mountain  Club  (GMC)  has  started  up  of  its  Young  Adventurers  Club  hiking  group  for  the  2016-Â2017  season  with  leader  Lauren  Bierman  of  Bridport. The  Young  Adventurers  Club,  or  YAC,  encourages  and  promotes  children’s  enthusiasm  for  playing  in  Vermont’s  outdoor  spaces.  While  the  pace  is  geared  toward  younger  adventurers  (ages  4-Â8),  everyone  is  welcome.  These  outings  focus  on  families  getting  out  and  having  fun,  rath- er  than  going  fast  or  far.  Basic,  progressive  infor- mation  about  outdoor  safety  and  stewardship  will  be  provided  with  each  trip,  and  all  trips  have  a  theme  or  activity. hooked  ever  since.  She  was  trained  as  a  Wilderness  First  Responder,  a  Maine  State  Trip  Leader,  and  has  spent  6  and  a  half  weeks  on  the  Ap- palachian  Trail  with  nine  13-Âyear-Âold  girls.  Earlier  this  year,  Bierman  started  the  Little  Hikers  Hiking  Group  to  help  encourage  kids  to  get  outside  and  ex- plore  the  forests,  and  to  help  parents  reconnect  with  their  love  of  hiking.  She  has  lived  in  Bridport  for  12  years  with  her  husband  and  their  two  boys,  ages  4  and  6.  Membership  in  the  Green  Mountain  Club  is  not  required  for  participation.  All  fami- lies  are  welcome.
