Panthers,  locals  excel  at  exciting  sport  with  sticks ,WÂśV IXQQ\ ÂżHOG KRFNH\ KDV D UHSX- tation  as  a  sport  that  is  constantly  be- ing  interrupted  by  whistles.  I  thought  of  that  on  Sunday  after- noon  while  I  sat  in  front  of  my  com- puter  and  watched  the  Middlebury  College  team  battle  Bowdoin  for  the  NCAA  Division  III  title  and  win,  1-Â0.   Many  more  were  probably  glued  to  televisions  watching  a  sport  in  which  every  play  begins  and  ends  with  a  whistle,  and  the  athletes  have  to  gather  for  a  committee  meeting  EHIRUH WKH\ GHFLGH ZKDW WR GR QH[W Yes,  that  would  be  football.  3OHDVH GRQÂśW JHW PH ZURQJ , OLNH football,  too,  but  I  do  have  to  laugh  about  the  bad  rap  WKDW ÂżHOG KRFNH\ gets  in  compari- son,  often  from  IRONV ZKR HQMR\ football.  Too  many  whistles?  Really?  7KH NQRFN about  too  many  stoppages  and  slow  SOD\ LQ ÂżHOG KRFNH\ HVSHFLDOO\ ULQJV false  now  that  college  and  some  high  VFKRRO ÂżHOG KRFNH\ WHDPV SOD\ RQ turf,  a  surface  that  has  speeded  up  the  JDPH DQG UHZDUGHG VNLOO E\ UHPRY- ing  bad  bounces,  and  that  some  rules  have  been  changed  to  create  better  ÀRZ VXFK DV DOORZLQJ SOD\HUV WR carry  the  ball  on  restarts  after  fouls.  Referees  have  also  been  encour- aged  to  delay  whistles  if  the  offense  has  an  advantage,  the  “play-Âonâ€?  rule  that  is  familiar  to  soccer  fans.  7KH UHVXOW LV D IDVW H[FLWLQJ SURG- uct  that  showcases  the  players’  speed,  athleticism,  stamina  and  abil- LW\ WR PDNH GHFLVLRQV RQ WKH Ă€\ )RU H[DPSOH WKH RQO\ JRDO LQ WKH Panther-ÂPolar  Bear  game  on  Sunday  came  on  an  end-Âto-Âend  Middlebury  FRXQWHUDWWDFN LQ ZKLFK WKH 3DQWKHUV FRYHUHG WKH OHQJWK RI WKH ÂżHOG DQG VFRUHG LQ WR VHFRQGV D GHIHQG- HUÂśV SDVV IURP WKH EDFN WR D SOD\HU who  carried  the  ball  under  pressure  down  the  right  side  and  then  crossed  to  the  middle,  and  then  a  defender  who  couldn’t  quite  control  the  ball,  DQG DQ DWWDFNHU ZKR SRXQFHG DQG VFRUHG MXVW OLNH WKDW And  then  later  there  was  a  little  bit  RI OXFN VRPHWKLQJ &RDFK .DWKDULQH 'H/RUHQ]RÂśV SURJUDP KDV ODFNHG over  the  years  in  the  NCAA  tour- nament.  This  was  her  Middlebury  WHDPVÂś ÂżIWK DSSHDUDQFH LQ D WLWOH game,  and  the  bounces  never  seemed  to  go  their  way.  And  what  was  prob- (See  Kirkaldy,  Page  3B)

OV’s  Lowell  leads  Independent  team By  ANDY  KIRKALDY ADDISON  COUNTY  —  This  fall  an  undermanned  Otter  Valley  8QLRQ +LJK 6FKRRO ÂżHOG KRFNH\ team  scrapped  all  the  way  to  a  Di- vision  II  title.  All  the  Otters  deserve  tremendous  credit,  especially  con- sidering  how  few  subs  Coach  Stacey  (GPXQGV %ULFNHOO KDG WR GHSOR\ But  it’s  hard  to  imagine  the  12-Â2- 3  Otters  claiming  that  crown  without  the  player  who  scored  roughly  two- thirds  of  the  team’s  goals,  the  Addi- son  Independent  Player  of  the  Year,  junior  Allison  Lowell. Lowell  headlines  the  2015  Addi- son  Independent )LHOG +RFNH\ $OO Star  Team,  on  which  she  is  joined  by  OV’s  only  senior,  a  talented  mid- ¿HOGHU SOXV D NH\ PHPEHU RI 29ÂśV stingy  defense. Coach  Mary  Stetson’s  Mount  Abraham  squad  came  oh-Âso-Âclose  to  lifting  that  D-ÂII  trophy:  The  deeper  Eagles  (6-Â7-Â4  against  a  tougher  schedule  than  OV’s)  controlled  PXFK RI WKH ÂżQDO YV WKH 2WWHUV EXW FRXOGQÂśW ÂżQG WKH FDJH 7KHLU GHSWK LV UHĂ€HFWHG KHUH )LYH (DJOHV PDGH WKH Independent  all-Âstar  squad. Coach  Megan  Sears’  Middlebury  group  had  good  moments  in  its  5-Â10- 1  campaign  against  its  challenging  Metro  schedule,  including  a  win  at  ' , VHPLÂżQDOLVW 0RXQW 0DQVÂżHOG D WLH DW 0RXQW $EH DQG D ÂżUVW URXQG playoff  victory.  Four  Tigers  are  hon- ored  on  the  Independent  team.
