The antidote to November’s gloom November, ugh: so soon we go from warm to cold; the trees’ colorful leaves now carpeting the ground demanding to be raked; darkness coming right after lunch it seems; geese clattering overhead, black against a gray sky honking a valediction — and it will only get darker and gloomier .... I’m not a winter person, runs in the family. You will not find Lindholms on the slopes or trails. It’s cold out. We come inside when it’s cold. My folks lived to be 99 and 98 and spent most of that time in Maine. My dad retired at 65 and he and my mom spent a month in Florida one winter. It almost killed them. They couldn’t come back to Lewiston fast enough. That reminds me of a bit from Down East Maine storyteller Tim Sample: “Go south. Go south. Go south. Me and Ma are always bein’ told to go south,” he intones in a wicked EAGLE ANDREW RAYWOND (#661) and Tigers Cade Christner (#573) and Tobias Broucke (#568) compete at the Vermont Cross Country ChamMaine accent. “Last year, we went pionships Saturday. Men’s soccer falls in semifinal By ANDY KIRKALDY AMHERST, Mass. — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team, seeded No. 6 in the NESCAC soccer tournament, on Saturday lost to No. 4 seed Hamilton, 2-1, in a semifinal played at Amherst College. The Panthers concluded their season at 10-4-3, 6-4-3 vs. NESCAC foes, and as was the case in 2015 was snubbed by the NCAA Division III tournament committee in favor of Tufts. NESCAC tournament winner and defending NCAA champion Amherst was an automatic selection, but Tufts (9-5-2, 6-2-2 NESCAC) became the only other league team chosen. Tufts was upset in a NESCAC quarterfinal, but finishing second in the regular season. The Jumbos lost two non-league games, while the Panthers were 5-0 in non-league games. None of the non-league foes either team played earned NCAA berths. Middlebury probably could have taken care of business itself by defeating Hamilton, which finished 107-1 after losing to No. 1 Amherst on Sunday. The decisive play in Middlebury’s game with Hamilton came in overtime, starting with a corner kick from Hamilton’s Alex Cadet from the right side. An unmarked Eli Morris not far from the penalty stripe one-touched the ball back into the right corner for the game-winner. The Panthers opened the scoring in 19:34 into the match on a play that started in the team’s defensive third. Drew Goulart carried the ball over midfield and centered a pass to Daniel O’Grady, who shot on goal from outside of the Hamilton pen(See Soccer, Page 3B)

Middlebury assistant earns honor MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College women’s lacrosse assistant coach Alice Lee has been named the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year. Lee helped steer the Panthers this past spring to a 22-1 record en route to capturing the Division III National Championship. One of Lee’s many duties for the Panthers includes serving as the program’s goalkeeper coach. This past season, she tutored recent graduate Katie Mandigo, a Cornwall resident, who was named the NCAA Division III tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Middlebury Head Coach Kate Livesay praised Lee’s work. “Alice has an enthusiasm for la(See Coach Lee, Page 3B)

MEDFORD, Mass. — The second-seeded Middlebury College volleyball team on Sunday upset No. 1 Tufts (24-3) in five sets (1425, 25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 15-11) to win its fifth NESCAC title and earn the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament. The Panthers also won the league’s title in 1997, 1998, 2010 and 2012. CLINTON, N.Y. — The Middlebury College football team thumped host Hamilton on Saturday, 45-10, keeping its hopes alive for a share of the NESCAC title. The 6-1 Panthers are hosting Tufts, also 6-1, this coming Saturday, while first-place Trinity (7-0) must travel to meet Wesleyan (61). A Panther win and a Trinity loss would create a three-way tie for the championship. Middlebury will probably have its hands full on Saturday: Tufts has lost only at Trinity, 36-28, while Wesleyan has won six straight by wide margins since falling at Tufts in its opener, 17-14. The Panthers’ only setback came at Trinity, 49-13. Hamilton (25) did not pose a challenge, however: Middlebury outgained Hamilton, 468-199 yards. Middlebury scored on its opening drive when quarterback Jared Lebowitz found James Burke for a 13-yard scoring strike. The Panthers settled for a 20-yard field goal from Carter Massengill on their next drive, taking a 10-0 lead at 4:46 of the first quarter. The Continentals got on the board with 7:19 remaining in the half, when Robert Morris booted a 40yard field goal. Middlebury scored after a Bobby Ritter interception late in the half. The Panthers moved 74 yards in 1:20, capped by a two-yard keeper from Lebowitz for a 17-3 lead heading into the halftime break. Lebowitz connected with Jimmy Martinez (17 and 11 yards), Burke (18 yards) and Conrado Banky (24 yards) on

the drive. Middlebury took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 75 yards on eight plays to make it 24-3. A 32-yard connection with Martinez helped set up an 11-yard touchdown pass from Lebowitz to Banky. The teams exchanged four punts before Wesley Becton picked off a pass to Middlebury on the Hamilton 48. Three plays later, Lebowitz connected with Banky from 10 yards out to make it 31-3 at 4:31 of the third quarter. The duo connected again on Middlebury’s next drive, this time from 30 yards out as the Panthers took a 38-3 lead. Middlebury scored its final touchdown of the game with 6:39 left, when Matt Cardew scored on a two-yard rush. The short drive was set up when Ritter recovered a fumbled punt at the Hamilton six. The Continentals closed the scoring on a five-yard touchdown pass from Cole Freeman to Joe Schmidt. Lebowitz finished 34 for 51 for 412 yards with one interception. Burke caught a career- and gamehigh 10 passes for 96 yards, while Banky finished with nine catches for 154 yards. Martinez hauled in six passes for a career-high 88 yards. The Middlebury defense saw 23 players record tackles and forced six turnovers on the afternoon. Robert Wood led the effort with six tackles and two sacks to go along with a forced fumble and a pass break-up. Kevin Hopsicker, Kevin Maxwell and Martin Williams each added four stops.

The Panthers will take on NEWMAC champion MIT (17-5-1) in one regional semifinal on Saturday, while Stevens (18-1) will meet ColbySawyer (10-8) in the other matchup. The winners will meet in the regional finals on Sunday. On this past Saturday, Amherst (15-2-1 after defeating Trinity for the league title on Sunday), scored twice in the second half to defeat Middlebury. Scoring chances were hard to come by in the opening half. Middlebury’s best opportunity came in the 37th minute, when Sabrina Glaser worked her way inside the penalty area on the left side and crossed toward the far post. An open Rebecca Palacios met the cross, but her header went just over the crossbar. In the second half, Middlebury’s Adrianna Gildner ripped a leftfooted shot from just inside the penalty area that sailed wide left. Just seconds later, Panther keeper Kate Reinmuth came out to challenge a charging Hannah Guzzi, forcing the Amherst player to put her shot wide of the goal. The Purple & White got onto the scoreboard at 51:47. Rubii Tamen dribbled down the right and sent in a cross that Reinmuth came off her line to corral. But the ball squirted away from Reinmuth and a defender to Guzzi for the tap-in. Amherst made it 2-0 at 61:44, when Tamen outmaneuvered the last Middlebury defender and slotted the ball past a charging Reinmuth from eight yards out at 61:44. Seconds apart in the 71st minute, Panthers Emma Shumway and Katherine Hobbs each found space in the middle of the Amherst box and shot from 15 yards away, but Amherst goalkeeper Chelsea Cutler made the saves. Middlebury outshot Amherst, 17-12. Reinmuth finished with three saves, while Cutler made 10.

(Continued from Page 1B) I stopped when it took six months for a pulled muscle or turned ankle to heal. Then I reffed for a while in the town league. It was harder than I had imagined. By the second game I thought I had changed my name to “Jesus Christ, Karl!” Now I’m an unabashed fan, and my most ardent commitment is to the local college team, an earlier version of which I actually played on, a very long time ago. I’m thrilled by the team’s success in the last 10 years. Middlebury’s men’s basketball team has won nearly 80 percent of its games in that time, averaging 22 wins a season, and has earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament seven times. And so many games have been intense, thrilling affairs, nail biters. In 2012, my friend Gary and I drove to Salem, Va., and watched the Middlebury team in the Final Four of the Division III championship, losing to eventual winner St. Thomas by a single point. I have a sign I purloined from Middlebury’s gym after an NCAA game that reads in bold letters “SOLD OUT.” In all those years when basketball fans were but a dedicated few, who imagined actually turning people away. (Continued from Page 1B) On this past Sunday, Tufts defeated the Panthers for the second time this fall. Tufts capitalized on a penalty corner to taking the lead 1:28 into the game. Nicole Arata fed Annie Artz out front, and Artz lifted a high shot over Middlebury goalie Emily Miller. The hosts took advantage of another corner nine minutes later. Arata shot from just inside the arc and Mary Travers deflected the ball home. The Panthers had a chance at 13:31, when Lauren Schweppe shot from the right side with Kelly Coyle providing a screen, but Jumbo keeper Emily Polinski made the save. Middlebury scored on its fist shot of the second half. Grace Jennings found the far corner after taking a pass from Molly Freeman at 23:41.

Hamilton got the equalizer 2:38 later, when Jefri Schmidt headed in a long entry pass by Mike Lubelczyk. Middlebury had two quality scoring chances in the final 20 minutes of the half. Cadwell punched a shot by Ben Potter wide of the right post on the first bid and made a diving stop on a Goulart shot by Goulart from the left side. This past weekend, the Panthers also gave Coach Sarah Raunecker her 400th career win, reaching that milestone in Middlebury’s three-set NESCAC semifinal win over Amherst on Saturday. Raunecker, who is in her 22nd season, saw her career mark improve to 401-217 with Sunday’s victory. In Sunday’s decisive final set, Tufts led, 10-6, but Middlebury racked up seven-straight points for a 13-10 lead. Two kills from Isabel Sessions, one from Eliana Schaefer and four Tufts errors comprised the spurt. After a Middlebury error cut the Panther lead to two, a Jumbo attack error and a block by Schaefer and Melanie English secured the championship point. After Tufts rolled in the opening set, 25-14, Middlebury broke away from an 8-8 tie to lead, 18-13, on a block by Alice Roberts and Sarah Staver. Tufts sliced the lead to 20-19,

In overtime, Hamilton came within inches of winning the match in the 92nd minute, but Aidan Ward touched a bouncing ball just wide of the right post. but Middlebury scored the final five points on Jumbo hitting errors to tie the match at a set apiece. In the third set, the Jumbos took a 7-3 lead, but the Panthers fought back. With the scored tied at 14-14, Middlebury rattled off a 7-2 spurt sparked by two kills from Becca Raffel for a 21-16 lead. Tufts cut the deficit to three (22-19), but the Panthers closed out the set with one kill from Chellsa Ferdinand and two by English.
