Middlebury Safe Routes: Middlebury has achieved the highest level in Safe Routes to School VT, which encourages walking and biking to school regularly and safely. Students who walk and bike to school tend to arrive ready to learn and be healthier overall. Fewer children being driven to school reduces car congestion and improves air quality. We monitor traffic patterns and student travel behavior, plan activities to teach bike skills and rules of the road, and recommend improvements to roads, parking lots, drop offs, sidewalks, crosswalks, traffic lights, signage, bus routes, bike routes, bike racks, and more as defined in the Middlebury School Transportation Plan at http:// www.maryhoganschool.org/. For more information or to help, contact Middlebury Safe Routes Coordinator Laura Asermily at lasermily@yahoo.com. Addison County Walk/ Bike Council: In response to citizen interest and recent cyclist fatalities, a regional walk/bike council is being formed to expand regional opportunities and capacity for safe walking and biking in Addison County. The walk/bike council will create a formal platform for connection between Addison County citizens, experts, towns, and local and state decision makers regarding walk/bike safety, infrastructure, education and advocacy.
