College sends off 552 grads

Bernie’s agenda is to rebuild nation for all

Last instruction: Go find your passion By PHOEBE LEWIS MIDDLEBURY — As Washington, D.C., native Kate McCreary walked to receive her college diploma on Sunday, she breathed a sigh. “I was kind of relieved, both to have a college diploma and also to have the graduation over so I can sleep a little bit,” the freshly minted Middlebury College alum said. “I feel celebratory and excited! It didn’t really make me sad.” This past Sunday 552 Middlebury College seniors donned mortarboards and bade farewell to their alma mater in a ceremony on the central lawn of the campus. Proud parents, family and friends cheered as the class of 2015 found their seats under a cloudy but warm sky. Sunday marked Middlebury College President Ron Liebowitz’s final commencement at Middlebury, a role he has filled since 2004. Duke University Dean Laurie Patton will assume the presidency of Middlebury College on July 1. Student Commencement Speaker Adam Milano opened the ceremony on a lighthearted note. A theater major and education minor from New Jersey, Milano observed to a chuckling crowd that “it is with the class of 2015 that (President) ‘Leave-o(See Graduation, Page 18A)

SEN. BERNIE SANDERS, I-Vt., fires up his supporters late Tuesday afternoon at Burlington’s Waterfront Park during his campaign kick-off for his run for president. At far left, Ripton’s Bill McKibben and Jerry Greenfield (of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream), both of whom spoke before Sanders took the stage, cheer one of Sanders’ proposals outlined in his Agenda for America — the senator’s platform on which he’ll be running for the Democratic Party’s nomination.

By ANGELO LYNN BURLINGTON — “BERRRNIE, BERRR-NIE, BERRRNIE,” roared the enthusiastic, hometown crowd of 5,000 supporters as Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., took the stage late Tuesday afternoon at Burlington’s Waterfront Park to kick off his presidential campaign. In his trademark style gesturing with his thumb and forefinger pinched together and dramatically jabbing the air while making each point, Sanders lashed out in his thick Brooklyn accent against the inequities of America’s income and wealth gap; against corporate greed; against a corrupt political system in which money buys elections; against trade agreements that have cost this country millions of “decent-paying jobs”; against the stranglehold of big energy companies that are destroying the planet through global warming; against banks and financial institutions that are too big to fail; against “the insanity” of an educational system that’s too (See Bernie, Page 7A)

VUHS board makes cuts to budget, tax rates for revote By ANDY KIRKALDY VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board has made final its third budget proposal for the 2015-2016 school year — a $10,258,933 spending plan — to place before Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on June 9. The board at a meeting Saturday morning agreed with ANwSU and VUHS administrators to cut $55,000 from the plan defeated by 722-676, or 46 votes, on May 5.

That cut will lower the tax impact of the budget by about 1 cent, officials said. ANwSU tax estimates have also been lowered by another cent since early May because those estimates assumed a $1.00 statewide homestead tax rate. Instead, the Legislature settled on a 99-cent rate. VUHS board members and ANwSU administrators also believe the budget lost on May 5 at least in part because of the addition of a second article asking for an additional

$156,000 of support, and this time no such baggage is attached. Despite the $55,000 cut approved this past Saturday, the latest VUHS budget is still seeking an increase of $845,000 from the current VUHS budget. That huge overall spending increase, which comes despite the cut of three teaching positions a year ago and four more in this plan, is driven by two major factors: (See VUHS, Page 19A)

Mt. Abe budget trimmed by $75K for third try BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School directors are hoping the third try will be the charm for a newly revised 2015-2016 spending plan that Addison Northeast Supervisory Union voters will field on Tuesday, June 9. The proposed budget of

$13,947,738 is $75,000 less than the $14,022,738 spending plan district voters most recently defeated by a 755 to 485 tally on April 14. Mount Abraham serves students in the ANeSU towns of Bristol, New Haven, Monkton, Starksboro and Lincoln.
