Leonard  (Continued  from  Page  1B) 2012.  He  said  he  was  happy  to  follow  in  Smith’s  footsteps. “I  am  honored  to  be  able  to  work  at  Middlebury  College  and  coach  the  baseball  program  that  has  been  long  guided  by  Bob  Smith,  one  of  the  most  respected  coaches  in  the  country,â€?  said  Leonard.  A  former  Red  Sox  minor  leaguer  and  All-ÂBig  East  catcher  at  the  Uni- versity  of  Connecticut,  Leonard  led  the  Bobcats  to  the  NESCAC  tourna- ment  in  2014  and  2015.  In  the  spring  of  2016,  Leonard’s  team  concluded  with  a  14-Â21  mark  and  4-Â8  in  the  conference.  Under  Leonard,  Bates  SODFHG ÂżYH SOD\HUV RQ WKH 1(6&$& All-ÂConference  First  Team,  and  two  players  on  the  league’s  second  team.  A  four-Âyear  starting  catcher  for  NCAA  Division  I  Connecticut,  Leon- ard  was  an  All-ÂBig  East  selection  in  2002  and  2003,  and  he  remains  on  the  Huskies’  top-Â15  career  lists  in  hits  (205),  runs  batted  in  (118),  at  bats  (648)  and  games  played  (177).  He  was  a  team  captain,  a  Dee  Rowe  Athletic  Scholarship  winner  and  a  Big  East  Academic  All-ÂConference  honoree.  During  his  college  years,  Leonard  also  played  with  the  Harwich  Mariners  in  the  Cape  Cod  Baseball  League.  Leonard  starred  at  Rockville  (Conn.)  High  School,  and  was  named  both  the  Connecticut  Gatorade  Play- er  of  the  Year  and  Hartford  Courant  Player  of  the  Year.  In  2014,  Leonard  was  inducted  into  the  Rockville  High  School  Athletic  Hall  of  Fame. Leonard  signed  as  a  free  agent  with  the  Red  Sox  after  his  playing  days  at  UConn,  where  he  earned  his  bach- elor’s  degree  in  political  science  in  2004.  He  spent  four  years  as  a  catcher  in  Boston’s  minor-Âleague  system,  reaching  the  AA  level  with  the  Port-Â

Leonard  began  his  collegiate  coaching  career  as  an  assistant  coach  at  St.  Lawrence  University  in  2008  and  2009,  with  primary  responsi- bilities  for  pitchers,  catchers,  hitters  and  strength  and  conditioning.  At  St.  Lawrence,  he  obtained  a  master  of  education  degree.  In  2010,  Leonard  became  the  head  coach  at  Elms  Col- lege  in  Massachusetts.  At  Elms,  he  instituted  the  “Blazer  Buddiesâ€?  after- school  mentor  program  that  served  15  area  elementary  school  children. doors  in  general.  The  balm  for  their  souls,  I  thought,  would  be  a  couple  GD\V ÂżVKLQJ IRU ZLOG EURRN WURXW LQ the  Maine  wilderness.  About  a  dozen  years  ago,  the  Ap- palachian  Mountain  Club  began  acquiring  a  large  parcel  of  land  in  Maine’s  100-ÂMile  Wilderness  just  south  of  Baxter  State  Park  and  the  northern  terminus  of  the  Appala- chian  Trail.  Three  purchases  and  a  decade  later,  the  AMC  had  70,000  acres  including  all  the  headwaters  of  the  West  Branch  of  the  Pleasant  River  and  dozens  of  remote  ponds  holding  either  native  brook  trout  (populations  known  never  to  have  been  impacted  by  stocking)  or  at  least  wild  brook  trout  (populations  that  hadn’t  been  stocked  in  at  least  a  quarter  century),  both  of  which  are  D VWHS DERYH KDWFKHU\ ÂżVK 2Q WKH property  is  the  rustic  but  beautiful  Little  Lyford  Lodge  run  by  the  AMC. Which  is  where  we  took  my  broth- er  and  sister-Âin-Âlaw  for  two  nights  and  three  days.  We  spent  mornings  DQG ODWH HYHQLQJV ÂżVKLQJ WKH :HVW Branch  or  some  amazing  beaver Â
ponds  on  small  tributaries.  The  sec- ond  of  the  beaver  ponds  was  far  and  DZD\ WKH EHVW ,œYH HYHU ¿VKHG $EVR- lutely  loaded  with  plump,  wild  brook  trout.  During  the  two  full  days,  the  four  of  us  hiked  into  three  remote  ponds.  The  ponds  were  loaded  with  native  brookies  and  we  had  nonstop  action  catching  (and  releasing)  them  RQ ERWK GU\ ÀLHV DQG VWUHDPHUV ¿VK- ing  from  canoes  the  AMC  keeps  on  the  ponds  for  their  guests.  And  there  was  not  a  single  other  angler  to  be  seen,  except  at  night  back  in  the  lodge.  There  we  feasted  on  steak  and  potatoes,  pasta  with  fresh  local  sausage,  and  amazing  deserts  for  dinner,  and  pancakes  with  bacon  and  maple  syrup  and  fruit  for  breakfast.  The  cabins  had  no  electric- ity  or  plumbing,  but  they  were  clean  and  comfortable  with  gas  lights,  a  small  sink  with  running  cold  water,  and  wood  stoves.  Showers  (with  hot  water)  a  short  walk  away  proved  a  enjoyable  luxury  the  second  night. But  mostly  we  were  there  for  the  wilderness.  And  the  balm  of  Maine  brook  trout.

United  Way  honors  volunteers  and  donors  at  annual  celebration NEW  HAVEN  —  Tourterelle  Dining  &  Inn  graciously  hosted  the  United  Way  of  Addison  County’s  Community  Celebration  on  May  26.  Over  90  community  members  attended  the  event,  enjoying  the  beautiful  setting  and  food  provided  by  Christine  Snell  of  Tourterelle  in  New  Haven. The  event  celebrated  the  busi- nesses,  donors  and  volunteers  who  make  a  difference  in  Addison  County  through  their  participation  in  the  UWAC  campaign.  Among  the  busi- nesses  recognized  were  Hannaford  Food  &  Pharmacy  for  their  support  as  a  Triple  Hitter;Íž  including  a  corpo- rate  gift,  offering  employees  a  payroll  giving  option,  and  allowing  staff  time  off  to  volunteer.  Our  Partners  Awards  (businesses  that  teamed  up  with  UWAC  in  multiple  ways  to  ensure  the  success  of  events)  went  to  Middlebury  Fitness,  Eagle  Country  97.5  and  Farm  Fresh  102.9.  This  year’s  Dine  United  Way  Partners  included  Green  Peppers  Restaurant,  Fire  &  Ice,  Mary’s  at  Baldwin  Creek  and  Storm  CafĂŠ. /R\DO GRQRUV JLYLQJ ÂżYH RU PRUH years  were  highlighted  along  with  new  donors,  small  business  donors  and  event  sponsors.
