MUHS Boys’ Soccer By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — In 2015 the Middlebury boys’ soccer program took a step forward under first-year coach Reeves Livesay, improving from two wins to six and improving its quality of play as the season progressed. “Last year we did do a good job progressing, and I think we did play our best at the end of the season,” Livesay said. “We hope to pick up there.” There will be some challenges after graduation and other reasons led to a half-dozen starters not returning. But Livesay said the Tigers are embracing the challenge. “I think the players are very excited because there are a lot of opportunities for players to take on new roles, and we’re sorting that out right now and getting people in spots on the field where they can succeed,” he said. One change comes in goal, where junior Santiago Fernandez moves from backup to starter. Seniors Harlow Punderson and Eli Miller return in the middle of the defense and on one flank, respectively. Senior Lucas Pyle will probably line up centrally in the back, with sophomore Tucker Moulton making a case on the other flank and seniors Brett Viens and Jakub Kraus also in the mix. Junior Jake Ingenthron can also play either defense or midfield.
Livesay was still sorting things out in the midfield in the preseason. Senior Owen Hammel and sophomore Henry Hodde had earned central midfield spots, with Hammel in a more defensive posture. Senior Sully Swearingen, junior J.D. Goettelmann, sophomore Jed

goal of improving in the course of the fall could determine their success this season. “Our goal is always to be playing our best at the end of the season and give someone a very competitive match when we’re in the playoffs,” Livesay said.
Girls’ Soccer
By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury girls’ soccer program has been on the upswing, posting two of its best seasons ever in 2014 and 2015, when the Tigers won nine games and nabbed a share of the Lake Division title. Coach Wendy Leeds said the Tigers once again have plenty of talent, but after seven seniors graduated and a couple other players did not return her team will have a new look this fall. “It feels a bit like a rebuilding year even though we have a strong junior class coming back offering some good consistency to what we’ve been building,” Leeds said. “But we graduated a pretty stellar senior class, and a lot of them were on the back line, and there is some rebuilding there.” The Tigers do have some experience in the back. Senior goalie Riley Fenster has seen plenty of time over the past two years, and senior Darcy Staats took over as sweeper in 2015. Senior Kess Moulton played regularly at midfield and defense last year and will take over at stopper, and senior Lauren Turner saw action both at midfield and defense in 2015 and will play on one side of the defense. Junior Satchel McClaughlin re-
turns to the sport after a year off and should start on the other side, but Leeds said juniors Ashlyn Foster and versatile Alexa Lapiner (the latter when healthy) will push for time in the back. Leeds does expect that group to learn to communicate and retain its shape as the season progresses. “The dynamic of what we’re building out of the back is looking, sounding, feeling a little different. We just have to figure that out,” she said. Junior Helen Anderson will start in the central midfield, probably on the offensive side, and in the preseason Leeds was leaning toward senior Monroe Cromis as the defensive central midfielder, with sophomore Ailey Bosworth also available in the middle. Senior Amelia Ingersoll and junior Isabel Rosenberg project to start on the flanks, with senior Claire Wulfman, juniors Sierra Barnicle and Christina Wiles, and sophomore Emily Laframboise also all in the midfield mix. Junior Andi Boe and sophomore Ada Anderson are the strikers, with junior Abby Gleason and Barnicle also running up front. At times the Tigers struggled to find the net last fall, and Leeds believes that could change this sea-

By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — The past three seasons have been exceptional for the Middlebury football program, back-to-back undefeated seasons and Division I titles in 2013 and 2014 and an undefeated regular season and a trip to the D-I final in 2015. Coach Dennis Smith said the Tigers simply don’t talk about more of the same, however. “I don’t start the season worrying about undefeated,” Smith said. “The only thing I worry about is getting into the playoffs. And once we get there it’s a three-game schedule, and hopefully you get to play all three.” The focus instead, for coaches, players and senior captains Andrew Gleason and Trey Kaufmann, has been just getting better and letting the chips fall where they may. “The captains, Andrew and Trey, have done a good job leading the group,” Smith said.
Overall, Smith describes the Tigers as a lunch-pail crew. “There’s no standout kids this year. There’s just a bunch of hard-working kids who have come in ready to play,” he said. Gleason, pressed into action for the semifinal and final last year due to an injury to the starting quarterback, takes over from the start of the season as the team’s signal-caller. “At quarterback, we’ve got a kid who played two big games last year,” Smith said. “Andrew’s just a calm kid that takes things in stride and does a great job at what he does.” Kaufmann is one starting tailback, with senior Pierson Beatty the other and juniors Lane Sheldrick and Paul Deering in the mix. Senior Spencer Carpenter is the fullback. When Gleason throws, senior split ends Karl Kaufmann and Doug Delorenzo and tight ends Marty Niemo, a senior, and Skyeler Devlin,
a junior, could be targets. Delorenzo could also line up at tight end, Smith said. Making the offense run will be a line that Smith said should get the job done even with graduation losses. “We’ve got seven, eight kids that are very strong up there,” Smith said. “It’s been tough for us to figure out, A, what five are going to start, and, B, where they’re going to be at.” Heading into the season, Smith planned to put senior Patrick Messenger at center, senior Maverick Payne at right guard, senior Nate Warren at right tackle, junior Jaro Perera at left guard and senior Joe Langevin at left tackle. Senior Nick Beattie and junior Brian Foote will also see time up front. On the other side of the ball, junior Tyler Hotte is the nose guard, with Messenger, Perera and Payne rotating at tackle, and Delorenzo, Devlin and Niemo taking turns at end.
Kaufmann and Carpenter are the linebackers in the 5-2-4 defense, and five defensive backs will rotate into four spots: Gleason, Pierson Beatty, Sheldrick, junior Cody Pomainville and sophomore Simon Fischer. Only Gleason saw time back there a year ago, but Smith said the group had begun communicating better during the preseason. One question for the team is depth. “Our numbers are down, where I’m only carrying 29 kids on the varsity this year. So that’s the issue right now, 1, no injuries, and 2, these first couple weeks getting into game shape,” Smith said. But he believes things will work out if the Tigers keep their focus on improving. “I don’t talk to my guys about we’ve got to win, we’ve got to win,” he said. “It’s just week-in and weekout, getting better and playing the game.”

MUHS Cross Country By ANDY KIRKALDY MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury cross-country program gets a new head coach this season, but he will be a familiar face. Chris Anderson, a 1972 MUHS graduate and runner at the school, has assisted former coaches Chaz Lyons and Aaron de Toledo the past three falls, coached for the school’s indoor track club each of the past two winters, and worked with the distance runners on the Tiger spring track teams during the past two seasons. Anderson said he is happy to take over the program. “The last three years have been a lot of learning as far as working with the kids and incorporating a lot of my experience running,” he said. “I felt I was ready to step up and enjoyed working with the kids.” Certainly, Anderson, 61, has plenty of running experience. He never stopped after high school, and has competed in distance running around the state, from modest road races up to ultra-marathons. He hopes to share his love of running as a life sport with the Tiger crosscountry team. “It’s a big part of my life. One of the things I look forward to in coaching is to impart that, see it being part of people’s lives,” he said. The sport has run in his family: His daughter, Emily Anderson, who is assisting the program this fall, is a former Division II Vermont crosscountry and track champion. As for the Tigers, both the boys’ and girls’ teams took fifth in D-II a year ago. Most of the girls who ran varsity at the 2015 state meet in Thetford return: seniors Caroline Kimble, Indigo Woods and Kate Os-
ter; junior Katherine Koehler, and sophomore Kate Wallace. Anderson expects others to challenge for the five scoring spots, however. “On the girls’ side we have five runners returning that ran the varsity race at states, and some other upperclassmen that are stepping up now,” he said. “But we also have at last count 10 freshmen girls ... and I’m looking for a number of them to step up and push the upperclassmen.” Seniors Henry Ganey and Tobias Broucke are the only two returning on the boys’ side who ran varsity at the state meet, but Anderson notes that senior newcomer Ross Crowne is coming off a good spring track season and that junior Cade Christner was coming on strong in the preseason. As is the case on the girls’ side, others could make an impact, including freshmen coming up from the successful Middlebury Union Middle School program. “I’m really encouraged by the kind of replacements coming in, and that has a lot to do with the program at MUMS,” Anderson said. With 50 runners signing up, Anderson is also encouraged overall. “The program just keeps getting stronger with a wide variety of kids coming out,” he said. “It’s good to see them have fun and get together and become friends.” In all, Anderson expects another competitive season. “We’ve traditionally been in the top four or five,” he said, “and certainly I would expect them to be in that range, and to work throughout the season to improve on last year’s performances and get closer to the top.”

Senior Calista Carl and junior Ciara Eagan will also see time on the front line, and Sears said Smith and Bartlett could also slide back and spell the midfielders. The team’s schedule is back-loaded, with more games in October than September, something that Sears said will give the Tigers more time to gel and improve and play their best down the stretch. “We’ll have definitely some room to grow, but with our light September schedule I think working hard together often will be really helpful,” she said. “If we just stay healthy and strong we will be able to compete.”

Abe Field Hockey By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — A handful of key players graduated who helped lead the Mount Abraham field hockey team to the 2015 Division II final, including its starting goalie, central midfielder and two defenders. But longtime Coach Mary Stetson said plenty of experience returns, and plenty of determination. “They came back fit, excited and ready to play field hockey. The Eagles at times last year had difficulty finding the back of the cage, and Stetson said she wants the Eagles to flow to opportunities rather than worry too much about positional responsibilities, with other players ready to respond to support them. “The flow of the midfield and the forward line will be critical to our success, how well they change and interchange spaces,” Stetson said. “We’ve struggled to score, so it’s how well we can cover the territory once we put pressure on the net and stay committed to that as a group and not just say that’s someone’s position.” In the preseason, she projected

Mt. Abe Boys’ Soccer By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — With graduation and other reasons, such as a semester abroad, factored in, Coach Mike Corey’s Mount Abraham boys’ soccer team lost more than a half-dozen starters from 2015’s 10-win outfit. But in the preseason Corey generally was pleased with what he saw, although he would not make any prediction about wins and losses. “We’re definitely a work in progress,” he said. “I’m much more optimistic now that we’ve gotten through a couple of matches in the preseason.” Even though Green Mountain Valley put a few goals up on the board vs. the Eagles in their season opener, Corey calls his defense “without a doubt” a team strength. Ideally, Corey would like to play three in the back, with senior Owein LaBarr in the middle and juniors Jackson Counter and Eli Rickner on the flanks in front of starting junior goalie Toby Bunch. “Eli, Owein and Jackson are sort of the guts of the team. They will allow for us to be offensively minded and put numbers forward,” Corey said. “I’m confident against most everybody we can play three in the back.” Junior Sam Paradee is penciled in to start as an outfield midfield, but could slide back to start as an outside back in a four-back alignment, with Counter moving into the middle. Se-
nior Sam Kuhns, juniors Leo Farrell and Foster Collette, and sophomore William Wright — if he recovers from an early injury — could also start in the back. Corey projected junior William Schoenhuber and sophomore Owen Maille to start at central midfield, with Paradee and sophomore Weston Allred on the flanks. Wright; juniors T.J. Clark, Eli Jensen, Chris Boyer and Ryan Bonar; and sophomores Angus Schwaneflugel and Kai Dobek are all also in the midfield mix. “I feel really good about the midfield. It’s a technical, smart group. They play quickly,” Corey said. “They’re very solid.”
Seniors Jack Willis and Keion Correll and freshman Silas Burgess will start up front, and both Willis and Burgess scored in the Eagles’ first two games. Dobek and Schwaneflugel, among others, could fill in on an attack that Corey expects to be productive. “I am actually more optimistic this year about our goal-scoring than I was last year,” he said. Corey said because many players do not have varsity experience that he expects some growing pains. “I’m confident we’re going to be competitive,” he said. “I just think we’re going to be more competitive later than we will be early.”

Mt. Abe Girls’ Soccer By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham girls’ soccer team is coming off two successful seasons, its first championship in 2014 and a trip to the Division II semifinal round in 2015. Many of the players who contributed to those campaigns have graduated, but Coach Dustin Corrigan said the cupboard isn’t bare. The Eagles do have some veterans, and fared well in preseason scrimmages. “I’m cautiously optimistic,” Corrigan said just before the season started. “I think we’ll be competitive.” Many of those veterans return either on the front line or have shown they can step into the attack from the midfield. “We have some girls coming back that are proven goal scorers,” Corrigan said. “On the offensive side of the ball we have some very strong players returning.” Junior wing Lydia Pitts tied for the team lead in goals a year ago, and classmate Abby Mansfield found the net a number of times and will also start up front. Joining them starting on the other wing will be junior Emma Carter, and seniors Lauren Gibson, Addy Croswaith and Keeley Kane and junior Grace Norman can also run up front.
Senior center midfielder Ernesta McIntosh joined Pitts as the Eagles leading scorer, and junior Casey Ober will join her in the middle of the field. Corrigan in the preseason was leaning toward starting junior Mariah Malloy and freshman Mae Peterson on the flanks, while Croswaith and Kane are also in the midfield mix. The defense will be brand new. Corrigan plans to use three in the back most of the time, but will switch to four defenders against some teams and in some situations. In the threeback alignment, junior Molly Funk will start in the middle with Jenna McArdle and either Vanessa Dykstra or Emma LaRose outside, and McArdle will shift into the middle in a four-back alignment, with Peterson possibly sliding back to play one of the outside back positions. Regardless, senior Genysis Berube will take over in goal, with LaRose in reserve. Corrigan said with no starters returning the group might take time to learn to communicate and play with one another, but he is confident that will occur. “I think it will come together in the backfield. It will just take some time,” he said. “We’re getting a little better every day.” The Eagles opened on the road
with possibly their two toughest games. Corrigan expects their Lake Division schedule to be challenging as well, but said he prefers it that way. “We play a very competitive schedule,” Corrigan said. “I think our athletes are up the challenge. My philosophy is if you want to be the best you have to play the best and learn something from every match.”

Mt. Abe By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham/Vergennes cooperative football team faces another challenging season, its second during its first two-year promotion to Division II. Coming off a 2-7 campaign in 2015, Coach Lee Hodsden said the Eagles have to be mindful they do not have room for error in a division that a year ago some observers thought might have been as tough top-to-bottom as D-I. “(The key is) no mental mistakes, no fumbles, no turnovers,” Hodsden said. “That’s what really hurt us last year, pre-snap penalties, just mental mistakes. We can’t have them. They’re just drive-killers.” The team has positives.
Football “We have good athletes, and we have a pretty big offensive line, so we plan on running the ball a lot,” he said. There is experience in the backfield. Senior quarterback Coleman Russell started a year ago, and senior backs Wyatt Gracie, Peyton Keith and Devon Kimball and junior Casey Kimball all logged carries. The offensive line sees some turnover, but senior Josh Roscoe returns to help anchor a unit in which senior Kyle Pearsall is also expected to be a major contributor. Seniors Trevon Smith and Dylan Bradford give the Eagles veteran split ends when the team throws. Those same players will be mainstays on defense, Roscoe,
Pearsall and Casey Kimball on the line, Gracie and Devon Kimball at linebacker, and Russell, Smith, Bradford and Keith in the secondary. Hodsden said defending the pass will be critical during most games. “In Division II there are a lot of teams that run that spread passing attack. And we need to do a better job pressuring the quarterback, and we need to do a better job in pass coverage,” he said. Other news includes the hiring of Mount Abe graduate and former college football player Cody Alexander and Middlebury Union alum and former Winooski assistant Jim Bougor to assist the program, plus new game jerseys and helmets that feature a Mount
Abe Eagle on one side and a Vergennes Commodore ship on the other. Hodsden said the team is a “true cooperative program,” with 15 Vergennes athletes on this year’s squad. “What is unique here is that these schools are archrivals in every other sport, but every fall since 2010 these student-athletes put these feelings aside and come together to form a football team,” he said. As for the season, Hodsden acknowledged the games will be difficult, as they were a year ago. “We’re in Division II now,” he said. “They’re all going to be tough. We just hope to be competitive and have fun.”

Abe Cross Country By ANDY KIRKALDY BRISTOL — A puzzling drop in the numbers for the Mount Abraham cross-country program this fall left Coaches Vicki Wright and Brent Crum scratching their heads and scrambling. For years the program has been healthy enough to field full boys’ and girls’ teams. The 2015 roster was 27 strong, for example. But on the opening day of school this year, only 13 runners were certain to lace up running shoes for the Eagles. We’ve got some good returners, it would just be nice to add a couple rookies to fill out the team,” Wright said. “You can still do well as an individual, but it is really nice to have a team to work for. It feels like it gives you a larger purpose.” Those returners to whom she refers are junior Ally Hoff and senior Delaynah Leavitt, who were the Eagles’ top two finishers, respectively, at the 2015 girls’ Division II championship race. Two other varsity runners from that event graduated, and three underclassmen, for one reason or another, are not with the team this fall. “Kids are so busy these days,” Wright said. “It seems crazy to me they wouldn’t do a fall sport, but we do have the musical, and sometimes kids decide they want to do one or the other.” While Wright and Crum are trying to boost the girls’ numbers, they do feel better about a boys’ team
where four of the seven runners who ran varsity at the 2015 state meet return: junior Aidan May and seniors Jude Bunch, Andrew Raymond and Will Aldrich. With a couple of other younger runners showing promise, including sophomores Ryan Adams and Ross Carr, Wright is optimistic about that side of the ledger. “I think our boys team will be fine. We have enough returners,” Wright said. “And I fully expect them to step up to the plate.” And she fully hopes that more students can be persuaded to run,

KAHRS BRANDON — The good news is that the defending Division II State Champion Otter Valley Field Hockey Team has eight returning seniors on the squad this season and is the team to beat. The bad news for next season is they are all starters and they will all graduate in June. Head Coach Stacey Edmunds said that although graduation will be a blow come next season, she is happy with what she sees across the board on her team this year. “I am really pleased with the younger players, and it does make me feel better about next year,” she said. “It’s nice to have girls on the bench we can use.” The bench is deep and has already seen plenty of playing time, particularly during the Otters’ blowout 11-1 victory over Fair Haven at home last Thursday. OV’s captains this season are standouts Courtney Bushey and Allison Lowell. And it is all about building up the underclassman, Edmunds said. With only two juniors, OV has four sophomores and five freshman on the squad. There have not been enough players to field a junior varsity team since 2014. “Here again, another year to build the program,” the coach said. “Right now it’s a matter of getting the numbers to keep the program going.” And Edmunds is also realistic about the Otters’ chances of repeating their success last season in a very strong Division II. “I expect we’re going to have some stiff competition,” she said, naming Woodstock, Bellows Falls and the merging of Windsor’s with Springfield’s programs as strong opponents this season. “It’s not
going to be a cakewalk for us by any means. What we earn, we’ll get.” That said, OV is undefeated at 2-0 so far this season. “Of course a repeat championship is our goal,” Edmunds said, “but we have to take it week by week because the composition on the teams changes. Players get hurt, there are new coaches.” Keeping her own players healthy is a priority, the said. So is conditioning. Starting senior Sophie
Bloomer is out for four weeks with an injury, junior Katie Coolidge is out with a back injury, and Edmunds’ daughter, freshman Alia Edmunds, is out returning from ACL surgery. “The biggest thing is keeping them all healthy,” the coach said. “And staying in shape. Endurance is a big part of this game.” Edmunds said she is also focusing on improving her team’s passing game and relying less on the big play.
“We still do the big hit,” she said, “but with controlled shots and flicks of the ball. The girls are working hard on that.” Overall, the third-year head coach just wants her players’ best game, week in and week out. “I think with the team we have, we can get through the season with just a couple of losses,” she said. “I’d like to be close to last year’s record (12-2-3 ) and go back to the playoffs.”

OVUHS By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — Nothing like a state championship to attract more players. The defending Vermont Division III State Champion Otters are up 10 players this fall, one year after beating U-32 in the final and capping an undefeated season. It’s the post-Carson Leary era for Otter Valley, as the Gatorade Player of the Year and all-time leading OV rusher and starting quarterback has graduated and is playing for the University of New Hampshire this fall. OV also graduated the heart of the best offensive line it ever had in MJ Denis, Trevor Peduto and Tyler Allen. But a guy named Colby McKay has been playing back-up QB on the Otters’ football team for three years, first behind Mike Winslow and then Leary, and now it’s his turn. A senior, McKay notched two wins in OV’s first two games of the season, and Head Coach Jim Hill is happy with his quarterback’s progress. “He’s doing nicely,� Hill said.
Football “We’re really pleased with where he is this year.� McKay is a team captain, along with seniors Brent Nickerson, Connor Mackie and Collin Parker. And it’s good the team’s numbers are up, because the Otters have a lot of offensive depth this year, and they are using it. In a devastating blow, standout back and senior Rexall Bautista suffered a torn ACL in his knee during a scrimmage and is out for the season. “My heart was broken for him this morning,� Hill said on the day Bautista got the news from his doctor. “Rex is arguably our best defensive player. He’s one of those guys who’s very versatile.� With that news, Hill is starting senior Collin Parker at fullback, and senior Tyson Cram will be the Otters’ go-to running back. “He’s an excellent running back,� Hill said of Cram. “Offense is not a concern. Luckily, we have a ton of depth this year.� On defense, senior Will Ross has

been moved from safety to defensive end, and at 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, Ross will be hard to stop, Hill said. “He’s going to be a nightmare for the opposition,� Hill said. The Otters also have four seniors starting at defensive tackle: Alex Flanders, Greg Whitney, Ricky Waite and Jeremy Frasier. Flanders and Whitney are also offensive line guards, along with Rutland High School transfer student Noah Smith, also a senior. Hill said the offensive line is still coming together in play mode, but he is confident they will gel. “As long as the line develops as I expect, we should do well,� the coach said. “By mid-season, that line will really be clicking.� As for receivers, Hill has tapped senior Conor Mackie and junior Payson Williams. Hill had high praise for Williams, who plays multiple roles on the offense including kicker and punter. “He might arguably be our best all-around player,� Hill said of Wil-
liams. “He could pick up a ping pong paddle and beat your butt in a game.� But the Otters have a target on their backs as defending division champions, and Hill said a repeat will not be easy, citing formidable teams at Woodstock, Mill River and Oxbow this season. “This year is certainly going to be a lot harder,� Hill said. “I still think we have the best team out there, but they’re not going to hand it to us. There really isn’t a weak game on the schedule.� But the excitement is building, and Hill said he just loves how the surrounding community embraced and celebrated the team’s success last year. “It’s a community thing, it’s exciting,� the coach said. “You go to a lot of these schools and you don’t see the fans in the stands like we do. There’s a buzz in the air. It’s an event, and that’s what I’ve always wanted for our program.�

OVUHS Boys’ Soccer By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — The Otter Valley boys’ soccer team is looking to improve on last year’s 3-3-8 record, but will have to do it with a smaller squad. Conditioning will be key for the Otters, who only count 15 players this season. It is also a different group of players, with some leaving to play football, but second-year Head Coach Dick Williams said he is implementing the same system of play. “We aren’t a kick and run team, we’re a possession team,” he said. “We’re looking to pass and penetrate and score. It’s a different group but the nice part is a lot of them have the foundation and we’re using the same system and they are familiar with it.” This year’s captains are seniors Nate Audette and Tom Kingsley, the only two seniors on the team. Williams has four juniors and six sophomores, including returners Clay Hayes at starting goalie, backed up by Nate Claessens. Williams said the up and coming underclassmen look good and he is optimistic his numbers will rise in the next few years. As for what the team is focusing on, the coach said he is stressing creating more options at midfield and up front, a departure from last season when his emphasis was on defense and the backfield.

It’s a different group but the nice part is a lot of them have the foundation and we’re using the same system and they are familiar with it.” — Coach Dick Williams But Williams was mum on specifics, preferring to keep those to himself. “We know the places where we’re getting hurt and we’re making corrections,” he said. “We need to stop conceding goals and score more goals.” Williams said he would like to see his team end the season with more wins than losses. “Then we’d have a home field playoff game,” he said. But that might be tough in Division III, where Williams said all of OV’s opponents are as good if not better than they were last year. Either way, Williams said his Otters are working hard and ready to win as many games as they can.

OVUHS By JOHN S. McCRIGHT BRANDON — The roster for this season’s Otter Valley cross country teams is full of familiar names as five of the six members return from last year’s squad. The new face in the crowd belongs to coach Brooke Kimball. But, while she is new to the team, she is hardly new to Otter Valley or to the running scene. Kimball, who resides in Proctor with her husband, Adam, and three children (Treyton, Brookelyn and Camdon), is a full-time special education teacher at OV and has worked in the district for eight year. A runner since junior high, the Rutland native completed a halfmarathon in Florida this past January. She has coached youngsters in the Girls on the Run program for two years. Kimball believes cross country is a team sport while recognizing that it a sport where individual results are often most notices. “I strive to build a strong commu-

Cross Country nity within our team and encourage the members to support one another on and off the course,” she said. “My goals are to have each runner focus and dedicate themselves so that they are able to continue shaving their times down … I want the runners to be able to push themselves to reach their goals.” Kimball said the five experienced runners on the team (plus newcomer Zachary Scarborough, a sophomore) will help push one another. “The three returning boys (Wesley Smith, Hayden Gallo and Anthony Rovi) are very competitive with one another and that goes a long way in pushing them,” she said. Kimball expects junior Kyla Dodge-Goshea will see her times drop significantly with each race. “She is trying hard to keep up with the boys in practice and it is really helping her.” Junior Brittney Danforth is a steady runner who can be competitive, as was evidenced in the open-
ing meet in Rutland on Sept. 6. “Approaching the finish line she realized she had someone closing in on her and really pushed it and was able to cross the line maintaining her lead on the other runner,” Kimball said. Overall, Kimball was impressed with the Otter results at that meet, and has hopes for improved competitiveness in coming meets. But she also wants her runners to enjoy themselves and their teammates and other high school harriers. Harking back to her own days at Rutland High School, she said, “I have friendships to this day with runners that I competed against. I hope to be able to help build those same feelings and relationships within my team. I am very excited about the opportunity to coach a sport that played such a big role in my life “I am excited to be a part of this team and see what these kids can do,” Kimball said. “It is a great group!”

VUHS Cross Country By ANDY KIRKALDY VERGENNES — The Vergennes cross-country team returns only two runners who started the 2015 season with the team and then ran at the state championship meet, sophomore Spencer Hurlburt, second among four Commodore boys’ runners, one short of the number needed to score as a team, and senior Sophia Parker, also second among the three VUHS girls who ran. Three more boys joined, senior Camden Bushey, junior Ben Praamsma and freshman Erich Reitz, bringing the total to seven. Castillo noted the running experience of many of the boys on the team. “On the guys’ side we’ve kind of lucked out,” he said. On the girls side, there are
six newcomers to the team to join Parker, but some with track experience: Senior Sadie Kass qualified for the state meet in the spring, and sophomores Ashley Cray and Olivia Hutchins also both ran for the squad. Junior Anna Huppuch and freshmen Emma Beauchemin and Grace LeBeau rounded out the squad as school opened. Castillo believes the track seasoning will translate. “Not a lot of them have crosscountry experience, but they’ve run for me before,” he said.
The chance to compete as a team should help motivate the Commodores, Castillo said. “We’re not going to knock anybody’s doors down, but we’ll have a chance to score some points, at least, make a name somewhere,” he said. Certainly, Castillo expects an enjoyable fall for the Commodores. “We’ve got a great group of young kids that accept everybody,” he said. “They’re a rare group that likes everyone that walks in front of them.”

By ANDY KIRKALDY VERGENNES — Coming off an injury-plagued and ultimately disappointing four-win 2015 season, the coaches and players of the Vergennes girls’ soccer team were feeling more positive coming into 2016. “There’s a mix of new kids and vets who are a little more comfortable playing, know what to do,” said Co-Coach Dwight Irish. “That lends itself to more possession and passing. They have an understanding of the game.” Many of the teams’ eight seniors are back at midfield, where in the middle senior veteran Caroline Johnston will team up with freshman Emily Rooney, who got her toes wet at the varsity level as an 8th-grader last year. In the Commodores’ successful opener, seniors Olivia Fournier and Annika Vorsteveld started on the midfield flanks, with seniors Shelby Gage, Aliya Hugo and Shay Pouliot all providing experience and fresh legs off the bench. Pouliot also spelled the central middies. Sophomores Morgan Lynk and Megan Vorsteveld give the Commodores plenty of depth at midfield, allowing them to play at a fast pace. Junior Kaitlyn Brace and sophomore Ciara McClay start up front, with the middies, notably Rooney, spelling them. Irish is confident the
Commodores can find the net, although he would have liked to see better finishing than they showed in a 1-0 opening win. “It starts with creating good chances,” he said. “But I think the next step for us putting them away … We definitely have three or four forwards who are capable.” Senior Megan Rooney has played both sweeper and midfield in her career, and this year the coaches returned her to sweeper to use her speed and experience to anchor the back line. Junior Emma Husk gets the nod at stopper, while senior Lexi Brace and sophomores Hannah Paquette and Rayven Perkins rotate through the outside defensive slots. Junior Anya Sonwaldt returns as the keeper, offering a veteran presence, size and strong punting. Irish said the Commodores have a balanced lineup, with good players on the attack and at midfield and defense. “We’re a little excited, but we don’t want to get too excited,” Irish said. “We have a nice blend up and down the field.” He expects improvement. “That was certainly the goal from last year to this year, absolutely,” Irish said. “And not just a step forward, obviously, in trying to win more games, but a step forward in our play.”

Butler said. “We have a strong forward mix, some speed and quickness.” Senior defender Klass Vorsteveld was also nursing an injury as the season opened, but Butler said he will start in the middle when healthy. In the meantime, sophomore Jack Halpin will sweep, freshman Jeffrey Stearns will serve as the stopper, and juniors Ethan Sausville and Nathan Wojciehowski are the likely outside starters, with Stearns moving out-
side when Vorsteveld returns. Junior Cameron Mclaughlin takes over in goal, with Sausville in reserve. Butler said the group is short on starting experience, but should gel as the season progresses. “The backline is solid, but young with the exception of Klass when he comes in there. They’re still learning the positions and formations,” he said. “It’s kind of a work in progress, but they did well in our two scrimmages.”

The team is not strong in numbers, Butler said, which offers both good news and bad news. “The plus to a small squad is everybody plays. You get in really good shape,” he said, while the flip side is, “Injuries can take effect, and we’ve had a few already.” Still, all things considered, Butler is optimistic. “I would anticipate an improvement from last year, for sure,” he said.

By ANDY KIRKALDY VERGENNES — In 2015, a year after major graduation losses, the Vergennes boys’ soccer team played a number of close matches, but won just twice. According to longtime assistant Ward Butler — who was filling in during preseason for Coach Kevin Hayes, off to attend to family business in his native Ireland — things are looking up this fall. Asked about the team’s positives, Butler was quick to cite the team’s midfield. “I think we’re pretty quick through the middle. We’ve got pretty good combination play,” he said. Senior Max Ratti-Bicknell and junior Ben Kayhart project to start at central midfield, with junior Agon Hasini likely to see plenty of time there or outside as well when he recovers fully from a preseason injury and works into shape. On the flanks at midfield, Butler said the probable starters are junior Lance Bergmans and senior Kyle Kingsley, with seniors Schuyler Coyle and Tinder Kiely and junior Samir Kadric in the mix. Butler is confident sophomore Zeke Palmer and freshman Josias Salomao can find the net from the striker position. “We’ve got some scorers. I think Zeke, Josias, Max can all score. Pretty much anybody can score,”
