Nostalgia  (and wild  animal  photos) )RU WKH SDVW VHYHUDO ZHHNV ,ÂśYH been  getting  a  large  number  of  texts  and  social  media  messages  from  my  JRRG IULHQG 'DYLG 2Âś+DUD 'DYH LV a  former  Vermont  resident  now  liv- LQJ LQ WKH Ă€DWODQGV RI VRXWKHDVWHUQ 6RXWK 'DNRWD DQG IHHOLQJ QRVWDOJLF for  the  cold  trout  streams  and  not- VR Ă€DW ODQGV RI 9HUPRQW ,W LV DOZD\V JRRG WR KHDU IURP 'DYH +H LV RQH RI my  closest  friends,  and  the  co-Âauthor  ZLWK PH RI WKUHH ERRNV PRVW UHFHQWO\ “Downstream,â€?  a  collection  of  essays  RQ Ă€\ ÂżVKLQJ HFRORJ\ SKLORVRSK\ and  Appalachia. Lately  Dave  has  had  extra  time  both  to  feel  nostalgic  and  to  send  me  PHVVDJHV 6HYHUDO ZHHNV DJR DV P\ regular  readers  may  remember)  he  ZDV KLW LQ WKH KHDG E\ D Ă€\LQJ ERDW :KLOH VORZO\ ÂżVK- ing  his  way  across  D 6RXWK 'DNRWD ODNH DQRWKHU ERDW traveling  at  a  high  speed  ran  into  his  boat,  and  then  up  and  into  him.  The  accident  resulted  in  traumatic  brain  injury,  several  PLVVLQJ SLHFHV RI KLV VNXOO D IUDFWXUHG YHUWHEUD DQG EURNHQ ULEV DQG FROODU- bone.  The  good  news  is  that  Dave  is  VORZO\ KHDOLQJ WKDQNV WR PRGHUQ technologies  such  as  the  ability  to  air- lift  a  patient  to  a  distant  hospital  and  WR FRYHU KROHV LQ WKH VNXOO ZLWK WLWD- nium  patches.  And  during  the  healing  process  he  has  time  on  his  hands  to  stay  in  touch  with  friends  via  social  media.  Lately  he  has  been  posting  photos  and  videos  of  jaguars  and  other  large  cats  in  a  subtropical  for- HVW LQ QRUWKHUQ *XDWHPDOD ² WKDQNV to  another  relatively  modern  technol- ogy:  a  motion  or  infrared-Âactivated  digital  game  camera.  Dave  has  been  WDNLQJ FROOHJH VWXGHQWV WR *XDWHPDOD every  January  for  several  years,  and  he  always  brings  a  game  cam  down  ZLWK KLP ZKHQ KH FRPHV EDFN KRPH he  leaves  it  as  a  gift  with  local  conser- vationists.  They  send  him  the  photos. I  was  also  hoping  to  have  some  photos  of  wild  animals  this  year.  Wild  Vermont  animals.  In  particular,  deer.  The  two  ways  I  hoped  to  get  those  SKRWRV ZHUH ÂżUVW IURP P\ RZQ JDPH cam  mounted  out  near  my  hunting  stand,  and  second  by  harvesting  one  of  (See  Dickerson,  Page  3B)

'HHU ULĂ€H VHDVRQ EHVW VLQFH Both  weights  and   numbers  are  up By  ANDY  KIRKALDY ADDISON  COUNTY  —  Ad- dison  County  hunters  enjoyed  the  PRVW SURGXFWLYH ULĂ€H GHHU VHDVRQ since  2002,  according  to  informa- tion  collected  from  the  county’s  nine  weigh  stations. The  total  of  444  deer  weighed  lo- cally  is  the  highest  in  13  years  and  the  most  in  the  county  since  Ver- mont  Department  of  Fish  and  Wild- life  regulations  changed  in  2005,  when  a  ban  on  shooting  younger  VSLNHKRUQ EXFNV GXULQJ ULĂ€H VHDVRQ went  into  effect. The  best  season  since  then  had  FRPH LQ ZKHQ EXFNV were  weighed  locally.  The  best  ri- ÀH VHDVRQ LQ UHFHQW PHPRU\ FDPH EDFN LQ ZKHQ GHHU ZHUH shot  in  the  16-Âday  November  sea- son.  ,Q EHIRUH WKH VSLNHKRUQ ban  became  law,  local  weigh  sta- WLRQV KDQGOHG EXFNV PDNLQJ 2015  the  third  most  successful  Ad- GLVRQ &RXQW\ ULĂ€H VHDVRQ LQ WKH past  two  decades.  7KH FRXQW\ÂśV VL[ \HDU ULĂ€H VHD- VRQ DYHUDJH NLOO EHIRUH WKLV VHDVRQ stood  at  375,  while  2014’s  total  FDPH LQ DW D GLVDSSRLQWLQJ 7KH ULĂ€H WRWDOV LQ WKH WZR \HDUV before  that  were  421  in  2013  and  405  in  2012.  Vermont  Field  Sports  manager  Greg  Boglioli  theorized  that  this  \HDUÂśV XSWLFN FDPH EHFDXVH PRUH deer  were  surviving  tough  winters  because  of  “three  good  years  of  food,â€?  including  “bumper  cropsâ€?  of  acorns  and  apples.
