It’s easy to admit: weddings can be dramatized and over-sold, calling into question the authenticity of their expression. But at the very core, weddings invite people to come together and share in a deep and intimate expression of love and commitment between two people.

In a day (or two or three), a couple can curate a snapshot of their lives to share with their closest family and friends; the passions they share, the choices they make and the important tokens and rituals in their lives are witnessed by the people they hold dear.

For many years, I myself resisted the dogma of marriage; perhaps it rooted within me as a feminist and sociology major who spent college reeling about the unfairness of laws that restricted some people from being able to marry the person they loved, while pressuring others unfit for marriage through the system in the name of religion. Why feed a corrupt system and legitimize a system so broken that nearly half of all marriages today end in divorce, I thought.

But over the years I slowly softened as I witnessed the internalization and personalization that different couples I knew gave to their own marriages.

I realized that while there is a common and shared set of social and legal expectations around marriage, each couple can also define what the bond means for them.

This Labor Day weekend, my partner of 13 years and I finally celebrated our own wedding. We chose the site where we first met back in 1997 — a summer camp on Lake Champlain. For us, the celebration served primarily as an opportunity to bring together the network of family and friends that we have built together and separately throughout the years.

Sharing our promises, our commitments, our style and our space with the group of people whom we love, respect and turn to for guidance and support in times of need was more moving than I had ever imagined.

In one of the readings during the ceremony, a close friend spoke about the importance of ritual and recognition of meaning in actions or promises that are made. Regardless of who or what defines the ritual, the significance is in the acceptance of its terms by those who participate.

Looking through a most generous lens, the excitement and social glamour around weddings can be explained by an eagerness to engage in intimate rituals and share in meaningful public exchanges. When seen at this level — shedding the superficial glitter to reveal the beauty in the act itself — it becomes easier to tolerate and even appreciate the surface level charms a couple adds to bring their occasion to life.

In this section we feature six couples with Addison County roots who were willing to share their wedding stories from 2016. Each describe their unique experiences and the touches that made their celebration so special the memories will last a lifetime.

Laura English and David Hanson (better known as Boots) are both Addison County natives, both having attended Middlebury Union High School. Boots was well-known in high school as a star on the football team, graduating in 2003. Laura followed a few years later, graduating high school in 2008.

The couple connected through mutual friends and started dating in the fall of 2009.

Laura knew David had the engagement ring, but didn’t know when to expect the actual proposal. On Christmas morning, 2012, David handed her a large box. She unwrapped it to find a smaller box, which she opened to find a smaller one and a smaller one and then one more, this one the ring box she was anticipating. Each box had a note on top of it, leading to the big question.

When choosing the perfect date for their wedding, the couple decided they wanted to be married around their anniversary. They waited three years so that they could be married on a Saturday that was exactly one week before their seventh anniversary. That date was Saturday, September 24, 2016.

They were married at the Robert Frost Mountain Cabins, a woodland paradise in Ripton owned and operated by Marty and Carol Kulczyk. The venue offers guest cabins, an open field surrounded by the beautiful green mountains and other event gathering spaces and services. Having grown up in Ripton it immediately felt right.

“We wanted a place that wasn’t commonly heard of, a place with an amazing view and a place that was meaningful,” Laura said. “We found Robert Frost Mountain Cabins in Ripton and fell in love.”

Not surprisingly, Laura and David’s guests also loved the location and continuously complimented the facilities and the views.

Laura says the one memory that she knows will stick from their wedding day is of all the wide smiles and laughter that carried them throughout the day. Kids were a central part of the ceremony and celebration, as the couple themselves have three children and many nieces and nephews with whom they wanted to share the day.

“Knowing that everyone had a great time and having the two families come together as one is what truly made the day special for us.”

As a piece of advice, Laura says, “Don’t be scared to stand up and speak your mind. Don’t stress about the outcome because everything will flow together.

You don’t have to worry about making everyone else happy, you come first.”

Jessica said she was “very surprised, shocked and didn’t know what to say. So of course, I said YES!” The planning process was relatively straightforward, Jessica recalls. They both wanted a fall wedding, so choosing a theme based on pumpkins, mums and lots of corn stalks was pretty simple.

They set a date for October 1, 2016 and got to work on the details.

Willa and Eric planned their wedding in just six months, so being able to lean on the support of the wedding planners at Basin Harbor was a huge part of their success. The couple’s guests could all stay on site at Basin Harbor, enabling a camp-like feel for all of their friends and family members in attendance.

They grew up a mere 20 miles apart, Willa Lee in Middlebury and Eric Lampman in Charlotte.

But that 20 miles was enough to mean that they went to different schools, had different childhood friends and their lives didn’t overlap.

So their paths didn’t actually cross in Vermont.

Instead, they met while both completing a postgraduate year (between high school and college) at Lawrenceville School in Princeton, New Jersey.

They remained friends after meeting at Lawrenceville, but went separate ways, both criscrossing the country on their own journeys for several years.

“There were definitely some missed connections along the way that are funny to look back on now,” Willa says. But finally in the fall of 2013 the stars aligned and the couple reconnected while Willa was home for a visit. The rest was history and Willa moved back to Vermont to be with Eric the following June.

On one of the many unseasonably warm and sunny December days last year, Eric suggested that they take a walk on Thompson’s Point in Charlotte. As one of the couple’s favorite places to go it wasn’t out of the ordinary at all, until Eric pulled out a ring and proposed!

The couple decided to get right to work, as they wanted to be married the following summer.

They chose a Friday in June at Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes, as they wanted a venue that could easily accommodate all of their guests with lodging and all of the amenities.

“We encouraged all of our guests to stay on site so that no one had to drive anywhere and it really felt like we were all at summer camp for a weekend. The day after our wedding people hung out on the beach, went out on boats and enjoyed the sunshine. To us, watching our friends and family enjoy Vermont for that small amount of time was really special.”

Two details stuck out in Willa’s memory as uniquely special to their wedding. First, at one point in the wedding ceremony they asked their officiate (a close cousin of Willa’s) to have everyone turn and say hello to another person around them. This allowed the attention to be taken off Willa and Eric for a moment, so the two of them could savor the moment.

Second, Willa asked two of her younger cousins who are exceptionally talented singers to sing while she danced with her father at the reception.

“They learned the song together and it was such a touching moment to have them be a part of the wedding in a different way. They were rockstars!” she said.

Alexa and Mitch had been friends since high school at MUHS. They reconnected after college and realized how much they had in common still. First on that list may be their mutual love for the outdoors. The couple married on the top of Jay Peak this fall.

Mitch Gingras and Alexa Foster met during gym glass at Middlebury Union High School when she was a senior and he was a freshman.

“He always had a way of making me laugh, but at the time I never thought of him as anything more than a friend,” Alexa said.

The two parted ways and Alexa went to college in Rhode Island for four years before returning home to Middlebury. She and Mitch reconnected through a friend in the fall of 2012 and decided to go on the first of what would become many many hikes. The rest is history.

The engagement came on a snowy day in February of 2015 on the top of Rattlesnake Cliffs. It was a sunny and clear day and as they were nearing the cliffs Mitch ran ahead of Alexa to test out his new binoculars that she had given him for Christmas. When she approached the cliff he gave her the binoculars and said he thought he saw something written in orange lettering in the snow on Lake Dunmore below. He asked Alexa to see if she could make it out.

“My vision has never been the greatest, but I began to make out letters in the fluorescent color atop the snow over 1,000 feet below us.

‘Will…you…marry me?’” Alexa gasped, dropped the binoculars and found Mitch kneeling behind her with a sparkly ring outstretched.

The wedding date was set for September 3, 2016 and Jay Peak was the chosen location. Alexa said for her whole life she had envisioned getting married on top of a mountain, so selecting a venue became focused around that vision. Furthermore, ever since their first date (a hike) the couple spends a lot of time exploring trails together on foot, so it felt all the more fitting. Jay Peak’s exceptional event planners and resources, in addition to its magnificent mountaintop ceremony site sealed the deal.

“The bold significance of mountains became intertwined with the wedding and really added a sort of splendor to the day,” she said.

On the wedding day itself, Alexa was most surprised by a heartfelt hand-written letter delivered to her in the morning by a member of the wedding party, along with a diamond bracelet.

“It was emotional in the best way possible and made me even more excited for the day ahead,” she recalled.

Following the ceremony, Alexa and Mitch “pranced back down the aisle” to Natalie Cole’s “This will be (an Everlasting Love)” as their guests blew bubbles and cheered. Along with the views at 4,000 feet of elevation, that will be a memory Alexa says they will never forget.

The former Kay Keren grew up in Middlebury to parents Pam Taylor and Robert Keren. Following high school Kay moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design and is now a fashion stylist who goes by Kay Olivia (or simply, Olivia).

Ryan Jackson grew up in Ft. Myers, Florida and after having attended The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, also found himself in New York City. He is now a partner at a real estate development company based in the city.

The two met through friends back in the spring of 2012.

“We had an instant connection,” Olivia recalled.

“We are both creative people working in different occupations but with a lot of similarities.”

The couple began traveling together around Europe, South America and all across the United States. Among other active pursuits, they both enjoy horseback riding and have sought out faraway places to ride like Morocco and Greece.

The wedding proposal came soon after Olivia stopped thinking it might.

When asked about what experience Olivia was trying to achieve on her wedding day, she replied that she wanted it to feel like a classic fairytale.
