State parks and other summer opportunities We arose early to beat the oppressive August heat and humidity, strapped on our bike helmets, and headed out for a quick loop before breakfast. As it turned out, the early morning departure wasn’t necessary to beat the heat. Though only an hour and a half away from our house in Middlebury, the temperature on Grand Isle was 7 or 8 degrees cooler and the breeze coming off the lake wonderfully pleasant. It was one of the few times my wife has ever commented that she was enjoying biking into a headwind. (Only later did we hear from friends back home that the day had been oppressive down in Addison County. They were jealous of us when we told them the temperature in Grand Isle had been in the 70s.) We did, however, need that early departure to beat the morning showers. In fact, we needed to have left five minutes earlier. About 45 minutes into our 50-minute ride the skies opened up. After several days of sweltering heat, however, the cool rain — like the headwind — felt good on our skin. And a large hot breakfast and coffee awaited us back at our bed and breakfast. Though on this trip we stayed at an inn, and enjoyed hot showers and the chance to be under a solid roof when the rain fell, my wife and I have also stayed at Grand Isle State Park in the past, and enjoyed a similar overnight trip to explore the islands. We have a long-term goal to visit every state park in Vermont, and to stay overnight at all those with camping or cabins. Bikes on the back of the car, or a canoe strapped to the roof, or in some cases both, is part of the adventure. So is a fly rod packed in the back of the car, since every state park I have visited so far is close to good fishing. For those who don’t have their own fishing equipment, Vermont Fish and Wildlife is now teaming up with state parks to provide instruction and loaner equipment in a program called ReelFunVT. More information can be found at http://www.vtfishandwildlife. com/cms/. We are making progress on our goal. Two It was one summers ago of the few our new park times my was Little River wife has ever Reservoir. It may commented be my favorite so that she was far. (One obstacle enjoying to reaching our biking into a goal is that we headwind. enjoy the parks we visit so much we end up returning to them before moving on to new ones.) This year we will visit Brighton State Park for the first time. We’ve stayed in tents and lean-tos, though I admit I’m increasing drawn to the luxury of a cabin in those parks that offer them. We bike and canoe and fish and hike and swim. And sometimes just sit and read. We go alone. We go with family. We bring friends. We do camp cooking sometimes. Other times we explore the local dining season. In addition to the fishing clinics and equipment loans, the state park system also offers a series of free events throughout the summer months, including concerts, talks, nature hikes and educational events for adults and children. (More information is available at http://www.vtstateparks. com/htm/events.htm) While on Grand Isle, we also spent an hour visiting the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station, the flagship hatchery of Vermont ‘s Fish and Wildlife Department. It’s always worth a stop if you are driving by — as is the Salisbury Fish Culture Station, the only one of Vermont’s five in Addison County, which I had visited just a few weeks earlier. (Confession: although I am ambivalent toward the stocking of non-native fish such as rainbow and brown trout, and toward put-andtaking hatchery-supported fishing, I never get tired of throwing fish food to trout in a raceway.) Speaking of opportunities in Vermont, this fall’s bow hunt will be expanded. Vermont’s archery season will now be nearly a week longer, running a full four weeks in 2016 from (See State Parks, Page 2B)

Many do battle in Field Days armwrestling Annual event draws big crowd, many competitors to fair’s main show tent By ANDY KIRKALDY NEW HAVEN — The largest number of adult competitors in at least seven years signed on for the annual Addison Count Fair and Field Days armwrestling competition, held on Friday night in the fair’s show tent. In all, 166 adults locked hands in battle, more than the 152 who showed up in 2015, and that number was easily the highest total since 2010, when 126 adults competed. The numbers of younger armwrestling competitors remained down from the peak of 158 youths sign-

ing up in 2011, with 83 vying on this past Friday. That number was typical for the past few years, however: 73 in 2015, 99 in 2014 and 85 in 2013. Friday’s only multiple-event winner was Jeremy Messervy, who prevailed in the two lightest righthanded men’s weight classes and the lightest left-handed weight class. The top three finishers in each youth age group or adult weight class were: YOUTH RESULTS • Boys & Girls 5-and-under: 1. Alex Sinks; 2. Tucker Sheldrick; 3. Griffin Sheldrick.

Orwell drivers make strong finishes at the Bowl WEST HAVEN — Orwell drivers Tim LaDuc and Lacey Hanson produced the best results among Addison County competitors at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in action on Wednesday, Aug. 10, and this past Sunday. LaDuc finished third behind winner Kenny Tremont Jr. in the Aug. 10 main event, a 35-lap Central Vermont Motorcycles Sportsman Modified race. On Sunday, Hanson led most of the way in one race on the dirt track, a 30-lap event, before settling for second place behind Bobby Hackel, a double winner that evening. AUGUST 10 ASPHALT In Wednesday action, Tremont narrowly escaped from a big pileup to win the special “Whelen Wednesday” double-points Mid-Season Championship feature. In spite of major damage to his car, the seven-time Devil’s Bowl champion ran to his second win of the season. Bill Duprey and Chris Conroy also scored victories on Aug. 10.

Three caution flags slowed the feature race. Tremont, of West Sand Lake, N.Y., was involved in the most serious incident, which stacked his car up with those of top championship point drivers Justin Comes, Derrick McGrew and Justin Severance. All but Comes were able to continue, though the body on Tremont’s car was severely damaged. Tremont was aided in part by more caution flags and a high-attrition rate. Race leader Brian Whittemore crashed on lap 18, setting up a secondhalf duel between Tremont and point leader Hackel of Rensselaer, N.Y. The pair squared off in the final 17 circuits with Hackel challenging Tremont nearly every corner, and Tremont scored his second Devil’s Bowl win of the season and the 72nd of his career with a sprint to the finish to edge Hackel, with LaDuc in third. Severance recovered for a career-best fourth-place finish, and Brandon’s Vince Quenneville Jr. took fifth. Whittemore, Chad Miller, and McGrew were the only other drivers running at the finish.

Unofficially, Hackel retained his championship lead by just five points over Tremont, 400-395. LaDuc rides in third 33 points back, followed by Quenneville and Severance. Duprey of Hydeville, Vt., extended his win streak to five in the 15-lap Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegade division, edging second-place Curtis Condon by inches after they traded paint out of the final corner. Through six Renegade features in 2016, Duprey has won all five races that he started and holds a 33-point lead for the championship over Condon, 357-324. In the Portland Glass Mini Stock division, Conroy, of Newport, N.H., earned his second win of the season and holds a nine-point series lead over Wayland Childs, who was fourth last week SUNDAY DIRT TRACK On Sunday, Hackel became just the second stock car driver in the track’s 50-season history to win in (See Devil’s Bowl, Page 2B)

MIDDLEBURY — Ralph Myhre Golf Course has a full slate of events scheduled in the next couple weeks. This weekend brings the annual home-and-home Ralph Myhre vs. Neshobe Club Challenge. Players from both clubs will compete at Ralph Myhre on Saturday and at the Brandon course on Sunday to determine the yearly victory. Next weekend brings the similar Ralph Myhre vs. Basin Harbor Club Challenge. On Saturday, Aug. 27, players from both courses will tee off in Middlebury, and the next day the competition will conclude on the lakeside course in Ferrisburgh. While that event is concluding on Sunday the 28th, Ralph Myhre will host its own nine-hole Parent Child Golf Tournament. Families that are interested in learning details or in signing up may stop by the course golf shop or call (802) 443-5125. In regular action, on Aug. 12 the threesome of Doug Biklen, Pete Hubbard and Pete Damone prevailed in Thursday Afternoon Bill Davidson Men’s Golf. The trios of Deem Schoenfeld, Marsdin Van Order and Joe Thilbourg, and Bob Kirkpatrick, Jim Twitchell and John Davis finished second and third, respectively. Kirkpatrick shot the best low gross score on the say. On Aug. 13, the foursome of Georgia Best, Gail Smith, Jay Best and Bill Laberge won the weekly Friday Night Golf Mixer. Taking second was the trio of Nicole Laberge, Wes Smith and Jim Reynolds, and the threesome of Jim Hadeka, Deb Hadeka and Jim Craig took third.

Antlerless deadline looming MONTPELIER — The deadline to apply for a Vermont muzzleloader antlerless deer hunting permit is fast approaching: Aug. 26. Hunters can apply on the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department’s website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com). A quick link to the information and application is provided on the home page. Or, you can apply with a paper application available from license agents. Applying online automatically enters you to win one of ten $50 Cabelas gift cards. As in the past, a person may apply in the lottery category, or as a landowner. However, it is a violation for a landowner to apply for a landowner antlerless permit if they are posting their land against hunting. Fish and Wildlife says it will be closely monitoring landowner applications and listing permit winners in both categories on its website. Hunting for antlerless deer will be statewide for the Oct. 1-28 and Dec. 3-11 archery season. Last year, hunters

took 2,618 antlerless deer during the archery season. One deer of either sex is allowed for youths during the Nov. 5-6 youth weekend hunt. Youths took 761 antlerless deer during the 2015 youth weekend hunt. The Dec. 3-11 muzzleloader season will have 18,950 antlerless permits distributed in 16 of Vermont’s 21 WMUs, which is estimated to result in 2,700 antlerless deer being taken. “The number of muzzleloader season antlerless deer permits was increased to account for the expected increase in the deer population following the exceptionally mild winter of 2016,” said Nick Fortin, deer project leader for the Fish and Wildlife Department. “The permit allocation is intended to allow moderate population growth in most of the state while stabilizing or reducing deer densities in a few areas.” “We expect the statewide deer population to be about 145,000 prior to the start of the 2016 deer seasons,” said Fortin.

Youth tennis jamboree set for Saturday MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Community Athletics Foundation (ACAF) will hold its first Youth Tennis Jamboree this Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until noon at Middlebury Indoor Tennis on Boardman Street in Middlebury. According to organizers, the event, open to ages 5 to 15, will provide youth the opportunity to play tennis through engaging games and activities. Players will also be able to rally against others from our area. During the last hour, the jamboree will wrap up with family time on the court and lunch. Raffle prizes and giveaways will be available and will include memberships to MIT, passes for free lessons and clinics, and

equipment and gift certificates from local businesses. The cost to participate will be $15 and is due at the event. Organizers are requiring pre-registration at www.vermontcf.org.acaf, and more information is available from Erin Morrison at emorrison@acafvt.org. According to a press release, over the past year ACAF has worked with more than 350 county kids and families and eight schools and organizations, several of which have received equipment grants through the U.S. Tennis Association. During the next month, ACAF plans to introduce new programs and events for youth and families with the goal of seeing tennis continue to grow in the community.

fifth place into the lead at lap six. Hanson held a big lead for most of the caution-free race, but was held up by several lapped cars late in the going, and Hackel passed her on lap 27 and held on for the victory. Hanson tied her Sprint Cars career-best finish as the runner-up. Hackel became just the second driver in Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s documented history to win in two divisions at the same event, and is the first to do so on a dirt surface. He joins current track promoter Mike Bruno as the only double winners; Bruno won Modified and Late Model races on asphalt on July 31, 2011. The 20-lap feature race for the Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegade division saw only three of the 11 starters running at the finish. Josh Coonradt of Ballston Lake, N.Y., was both fast and lucky, winning the race in his first Devil’s Bowl start of the season. Chelsea, Vt., drivers Mike Ryan and Wayland Childs finished 1-2 in the 15lap race for Portland Glass Mini Stock division after a race-long battle for the lead. Derrick Counter of Leicester finished was a career-best third. Devil’s Bowl Speedway returns to

action on its half-mile asphalt track on Saturday and on its 3/10-mile dirt track on Sunday. WEDNESDAY RESULTS Aug. 10’s winners and local drivers’ results were: • Central Vermont Motorcycles Sportsman Modified Feature (35 laps): 1. Tremont; 3. LaDuc; 5. Quenneville; 17. State Parks (Continued from Page 1B) Oct. 1-28. State biologists expect the impact on the deer population to be minimal. For those seeking the opportunity to harvest a doe during the December muzzleloader season, the deadline to apply — by entering the antlerless tag lottery — is fast approaching. Aug. 26 is the final date to apply online. Statewide, more than 18,000 tags will be issued this year. One opportunity Vermonters won’t

have in 2016 is the choice of using natural deer urine as an attractant. Because of the risk of disease — particularly Chronic Wasting Disease, or CWD — spreading to the wild deer herd through deer urine harvested elsewhere and imported into the state, the use of natural urine lures is now banned in Vermont. The Fish and Wildlife board voted in this ban last year, it was approved by the Legislature, and it takes effect this year.

Woman cited for theft of cancer donations ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police cited Sherry Vukoder, 59, of Addison for petit larceny alleging that on Aug. 8 she stole some cash from a cancer survivor donation jar that had been set up at the Jolley gas station on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh. Police said their investigation revealed “clear and convincing evidenceâ€? that led them to Vukoder, whom they cited on Aug. 12. Vukoder is scheduled to answer to the charge on Sept. 19 in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, according to police. In other recent activity, troopers: • On Aug. 8 at approximately 12:50 p.m. assisted Bristol police with a motor vehicle stop near the intersection of Ferson Road and Route 7 in Leicester. After a short investigation police determined that the driver, identified as 40-yearold Jeremy Craig of Hudson Falls, N.Y., had been operating the vehicle while under the influence and with a criminally suspended license. A preliminary breath sample showed that Craig’s blood alcohol content

was 0.137 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08. Police cited Craig for DUI, fourth offense, and driving with a criminally suspended license. • On Aug. 14 at approximately 9:14 a.m. state police received a report of a collision between a cyclist and a vehicle on Lake Dunmore Road in Salisbury. The trooper reported that preliminary investigation showed that the cyclist, identified as 53-year-old John Maunders of Quebec, failed to stop or yield at an intersection and subsequently collided with a vehicle driven by Margaret Spink, 72, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who was driving a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country van westbound on Lake Dunmore Road at approximately 20 mph. Maunders was subsequently transported to UVM Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. Spink was uninjured by the collision and her vehicle sustained moderate contact damage as a result of the collision. No court action was anticipated. • On Aug. 14 at about 2:55 p.m. troopers from the New Haven barracks were called to a one-car crash

on Delorm Road in Leicester. The officers determined that Dustin Hutchinson, 27, of Leicester was driving a Toyota pickup truck northbound on Delorm Road when he lost control of the truck and traveled off the east side of the roadway into a ditch. Hutchinson’s truck sustained damage to its rear passenger side and was towed from the scene. Troopers also determined that Hutchinson had been drinking and he was subsequently arrested and transported to the New Haven barracks, where he was processed for DUI. A preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol content of 0.19 percent. Hutchinson is scheduled to answer the charge in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, on Aug. 29. • Vermont State Police announced that there will be a sobriety checkpoint(s) conducted in Addison County by area law enforcement within the next three weeks. This will be done in an effort to monitor the flow of traffic along Vermont’s highways in the interest of detecting and arresting persons under the influence of alcohol or any drug that has impaired their ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Police investigating incident at Middlebury to n o ce MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to an alleged physical altercation on Aug. 9 between a town employee and a local resident. Police later confirmed the two individuals involved in the incident were a man named Rocket and Jamie Gaucher, director of Middlebury’s Office of Business Development & Innovation. Police have been reviewing building security video and interviewing witnesses to determine if anyone will be cited in connection with the alleged fight. Chief Tom Hanley confirmed on Thursday that Rocket has been granted a temporary stalking order against Gaucher, who in turn was granted a temporary stalking order against Rocket. Both have been served and will have to appear at related court hearings, according to Hanley. The town has issued an order to Rocket that he cannot come to the town offices without first making an appointment with Town Manager Kathleen Ramsay, according to Hanley. By LEE J. KAHRS BRANDON — A young man from Brandon was killed in a single-car crash on Newton Road Friday night, and two passengers in the car were injured. Police said no one in the 2000 red Honda Civic was wearing a seatbelt as the driver, 22-yearold Thomas Trudeau Savage, was traveling west on Newton Road just before midnight on Aug. 12. Police said Savage was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The two juvenile passengers, both still inside the car, were taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. At the scene Saturday evening, police tape and orange traffic cones could be seen around the crumpled fence. Unusually deadly heroin in Vermont BURLINGTON — Vermont health officials are warning street drug users about an especially deadly strain of heroin that is circulating in several parts of the state, including central Vermont and the Northeast Kingdom. According to reports from emergency responders over the weekend, at least 10 people have overdosed, taking more than one dose of naloxone (Narcan) to be revived. While naloxone can reverse an overdose, it must be given quickly and followed up with a 911 call for an ambulance. The drug can last longer than naloxone or take more than one dose to help. Bags of heroin, possibly laced with fentanyl, and stamped “Game of Thrones” appear to be connected with some of the overdoses. Fentanyl is up to 50 times stronger than heroin, and that much deadlier. “If you continue to use street drugs, or know someone who does, we urge you to be aware of the current danger out there,” said Health Commissioner Harry Chen, MD. “We want to prevent deaths from overdose, and have alerted naloxone distribution sites and given some precautionary advice for those people who continue to use.” If you are a street drug user, the Health Department advises: • Do not use alone — have someone with you who can give naloxone and call 911 to save your life. • Use only one drug at a time. • Don’t mix heroin with alcohol or benzos (benzodiazepines). • Test the strength of the drug before using the whole amount. • Cut the amount that you use at one time. • Inject less if it feels too strong. The Health Department continues its work to equip citizens and emergency responders with emergency overdose rescue kits containing naloxone as part of its opioid overdose prevention program.
