Posts  from  Alaska,  Part  2:  Bears  and  Brenden  on  Bird  Creek A  long  day  of  class  in  Alaska  had  ended.  I’d  spent  at  least  10  hours  hiking,  observing  stream  ecosys- tems,  working  on  writing,  and  eating  breakfast,  lunch  and  supper  with  my  Middlebury  College  students.  About  three  evening  hours  remained  for  my  own  recreation.  At  7:15  p.m.  I  ar- rived  at  Bird  Creek  after  a  30-Âminute  drive  southeast  from  Anchorage  along  the  beauti- ful  Seward  High- way  tucked  along  the  Turnagain  Arm  of  the  Cook  Inlet  beneath  the  south  ridge  of  the  Chugach  Mountains.  By  7:45  p.m.,  I  have  my  À\ URG ULJJHG DQG DP VWDQGLQJ LQ the  river  closer  to  the  eastern  bank  in  the  midst  of  a  crowd  of  anglers,  hoping  to  catch  a  salmon.  With  me  is  my  fellow  teacher  David  O’Hara  and  two  of  my  students,  Brenden  and  Michael.  And  around  8  p.m.  I  am  nervously  moving  back  over  to  the  west  bank  of  the  creek  because  a  brown  bear  —  the  kind  commonly  known  as  a  grizzly  —  has  lumbered  down  out  of  the  woods  and  is  standing  about  15  yards  away  from  the  river  in  the  tall  grass  on  the  eastern  bank.  For  the  next  30  minutes  the  bear  stays  there,  alternately  lying  down  invisible  in  the  tall  grass,  and  standing  up  on  its  haunches  to  survey  the  scene.  I  am  more  nervous  when  I  can’t  see  the  bear.  But  I  am  surrounded  by  other  DQJOHUV VR , FRQWLQXH WR ÂżVK Just  as  my  brother  Ted  and  my  son  Peter  arrive  in  a  separate  car  and  start  down  the  trail  to  join  us,  the  bear  am- bles  off  and  disappears.  They  don’t  get  to  see  the  bear.  Ted  catches  a  few  pink  salmon.  The  rest  of  us  come  up  empty.  I  return  a  few  days  later.  The  stu- dents  are  not  with  me  this  time.  It  is  just  Peter,  Ted  and  my  sister-Âin-Âlaw  6XVLH , KDYH D EHWWHU VHOHFWLRQ RI Ă€LHV and  I  am  willing  to  work  my  way  up  to  a  more  ideal  spot  at  the  very  top  RI OHJDO ÂżVKLQJ DUHD 7KLV WLPH ZH DOO land  several  pink  salmon,  including  some  fresh,  fat  females.  Peter  lands  KLV ÂżUVW HYHU VDOPRQ RQ D Ă€\ :H KDYH ÂżYH RQ D VWULQJHU LQ WKH ZDWHU when  a  black  bear  arrives.  He  begins  VQXIĂ€LQJ DURXQG WKH VKRUH DSSDUHQW- ly  hoping  for  some  free  salmon  that  GRHVQÂśW UHTXLUH KLP WR JR ÂżVKLQJ , am  thinking  about  the  smoked  salm- on  I  want  to  bring  home,  and  so  I  run  over  and  pick  up  my  stringer  and  be- gin  wading  to  the  far  shore  hauling  (See  Dickerson,  Page  3B)

Ralph  Myhre  to  be  busy  for  a  while MIDDLEBURY  —  The  Ralph  Myhre  Golf  Course  will  host  three  events  in  the  next  two  weeks.  On  Fri- day,  Aug.  7,  the  Middlebury  course  will  host  the  Vermont  PGA  Junior  Tour  Championship,  with  a  shotgun  start  at  9  a.m.  Saturday,  Aug.  15,  brings  the   Club  Challenge  vs.  Ne- shobe  with  an  8:30  a.m.  back-Ânine  shotgun  start. On  Saturday,  Aug.  22,  Ralph  Myhre  will  host  the  34th  annual  Middlebury  Women’s  Invitational,  with  an  8:30  a.m.  shotgun  start.  Sign-Âups  for  that  event  are  going  on  now  through  Aug  14. In  this  past  week’s  Friday  Evening  Mixed  Scramble,  the  threesome  of  Bill  Laberge,  Diane  Neuse  and  Dave  :HPHWWH FDPH LQ ÂżUVW IROORZHG E\ the  quartet  of  Father  Skip  Baltz,  Maryann  Broughton,  Liz  Andrews  and  Gail  Smith.  The  trio  of  Bernie  Andrews,  Joan  *XHUWLQ DQG &LOOD /HQJ ÂżQLVKHG third,  while  Wes  Smith  and  Nicole  Laberge  were  the  Closest  to  The  Pin  winners.  In  last  week’s  Bill  Davidson  Thursday  Afternoon  Golf,  the  three- some  of  Jim  Dayton,  Ed  Sommers  and  Bernie  Andrews  prevailed.  Tak- ing  second  in  the  best-Âball  competi- tion  was  the  trio  of  Joe  Bartlett,  Joe  Thilbourg  and  Jim  Hedeka.  Sommers  earned  low-Ânet  honors,  and  the  Closest  To  The  Pin  winners  were  Neil  Mackey  and  Bartlett.
OTTER  VALLEY  NOSE  tackle  Adam  Sherwin  was  a  key  defensive  lineman  for  the  Vermont  team  in  the  Shrine  Maple  Sugar  Bowl  in  Castleton  on  Saturday.  Sherwin  recovered  a  fumble  that  set  up  Vermont’s  second  touchdown.
Shrine  experience  positive  despite  loss N.H.  rallies  late  in  competitive  game By  ANDY  KIRKALDY CASTLETON  —  The  Vermont  Shrine  Maple  Sugar  Bowl  team  had  a  lot  going  for  it  this  past  Saturday  at  Castleton  State  College.  Vermont  took  a  12-Â7  lead  after  three  quarters,  faced  a  New  Hamp- shire  opponent  missing  some  top  players  due  to  an  in-Âstate  East-ÂWest  all-Âstar  game,  deployed  a  defense  that  held  its  foe  to  negative  rushing  yardage,  and  enjoyed  the  services  of  six  members  of  the  two-Âtime  Divi- sion  I  champion  Middlebury  Union  High  School  squad. %XW 9HUPRQWÂśV ÂżUVW ZLQ VLQFH was  not  meant  to  be:  New  Hamp- shire  took  the  lead  with  a  long  trick- SOD\ WRXFKGRZQ DV WKH ÂżQDO TXDUWHU opened,  and  then  tacked  on  two  scores  on  long  passes  to  pull  away  for  a  27-Â12  victory  and  extend  its  lead  in  the  series  to  47-Â13-Â2. MUHS  Head  Coach  Dennis  Smith  oversaw  the  Vermont  team  that  on  Saturday  played  one  of  the  few  close  games  vs.  New  Hampshire  in  recent Â
memory.  Smith  said  he  was  disap- pointed,  but  glad  the  Green  Moun- tain  State  gave  its  neighbor  a  run  for  its  money. “We  had  chances  to  win  the  game,  and  they  made  plays,  too.  So,  you  know,  it  was  a  great  game.  And  what  it  comes  down  to  is  being  a  good  game  so  it  grows  interest  again,â€?  Smith  said.  “It’s  not  a  matter  of  whether  Vermont  is  going  to  lose, Â
it’s  whether  they  are  going  to  be  competitive  enough  to  keep  the  fans  coming.  That’s  what  has  to  happen.  People  don’t  want  to  go  if  they  know  it’s  going  to  be  42-Â0.â€? Shaftsbury  resident  is  top  pitcher BRISTOL  —  Gale  Greene  of  Shaftsbury  won  the  Class  A  division  in  the  Vermont  PreState  horseshoe- pitching  tournament  hosted  by  the  Sodbusters  Horseshoe  Club  at  its  Bristol  courts  this  past  Sunday. MISSY Â Â FOOTE
Foote  nabs  one  more  accolade MIDDLEBURY  —  Recently  retired  Middlebury  College  women’s  lacrosse  coach  Missy  Foote  added  another  accolade  to  her  storied  career  by  being  named  a  Northeast  Regional  Coach  of  the  Year  by  the  Inter- collegiate  Women’s  Lacrosse  Coaches  Association.  During  her  35  years  on  the  Panther  bench,  Foote  earned  the  regional  coaching  honor  eight  times. During  her  career,  Foote  was  named  the  1994,  1997,  2000,  2001  and  2002  Division  III  New  England  and  National  Women’s  Lacrosse  Coach  of  the  Year.  She  earned  NESCAC  Coach  of  the  Year  honors  every  year  from  2001  to  2005,  as  well  as  being  chosen  the  Regional  Coach  of  the  Year  in  2012,  2013  and  2015. ,Q KHU ÂżQDO VHDVRQ WKLV SDVW spring,  Foote  led  Middlebury  WR WKH 1&$$ VHPLÂżQDOV IRU WKH WK WLPH 7KH 3DQWKHUV ÂżQLVKHG with  a  16-Â4  record,  giving  the  2012  National  Lacrosse  Hall  of  Fame  inductee  a  422-Â114-Â1  re- cord  in  537  games  coached  with  ¿YH 1&$$ WLWOHV +HU FDUHHU wins  place  her  second  all-Âtime  among  Division  III  coaches,  while  she  ranks  third  among  coaches  throughout  all  divi- sions. Dickerson  (Continued  from  Page  1B) VRPH WR SRXQGV RI ÂżVK The  black  bear  runs  off.  I  think  my  sudden  movement  must  have  scared  him.  Then  I  see  a  more  likely  rea- son  for  his  departure:  A  somewhat  larger  brown  bear  has  just  wandered  down  out  of  the  woods  to  the  river.  He  shows  no  sign  of  nervousness  and  begins  to  move  steadily  down- stream  along  the  eastern  riverbank.  We  all  quickly  get  out  of  the  river  on  the  western  side.  The  anglers  on  the  eastern  shore  all  retreat  as  far  as  they  can  until  they  are  backed  up  to  a  boulder.  One  of  the  anglers  pulls  a  .44  out  of  his  holster,  but  the  bear  at  that  point  decides  to  turn.  This  is  bad  news  for  us  as  he  (or  she)  is  now  crossing  the  river  below  us  over  to  our  side.  He  sniffs  the  air  and  seems  to  catch  a  whiff  of  the  salmon  I  am  holding.  At  30  yards  away,  he  takes  a  couple  steps  in  our  GLUHFWLRQ )RU WKH ÂżUVW WLPH LQ P\ OLIH I  have  my  can  of  bear  spray  out,  with  the  safety  off.  But  then  the  bear  turns  and  heads  toward  the  woods  and  the  trail  down  which  we  had  come.  Though  the  bear  has  disappeared,  we  hop  back  into  the  river  and  return  to  the  eastern  bank  where  we  work  our  way  down  the  trail-Âless  shoreline  in  WKH PXG RI WLGDO Ă€DWV , DP VWLOO KROG- ing  the  salmon.  Over  the  weekend  my  family  takes  a  bike  trip  to  a  ski  area  where  we  ride  a  tram  to  a  restaurant  at  the  top  for  lunch.  Since  the  trail  starts  and  ends  at  a  campground  by  Bird  Creek,  I  get  yet  another  opportunity  to  cast  for  some  salmon.  I  land  about  10  pinks.  I  also  foul  hook  several  others  and  ORVH VRPH Ă€LHV LQ ÂżVK %XW , DP QRZ hoping  for  silvers,  which  are  larger,  PRUH DFUREDWLF ÂżJKWHUV DQG EHWWHU tasting  than  pinks.  I  don’t  catch  any  silvers  and  I  don’t  keep  any  pinks  as  we  already  have  enough  to  smoke.  We  see  one  more  bear  from  a  dis- tance. MIDDLEBURY  —  A  Middlebury  man  pleaded  innocent  on  July  28  in  Addison  Superior  Court,  criminal  division,  to  a  misdemeanor  charge  of  first-Âdegree  aggravated  domestic  as- sault  stemming  from  a  July  27  incident  during  which  he  allegedly  grabbed  a  woman  around  the  neck  during  a  dispute  at  an  Ossie  Road  home. Middlebury  police  allege  that  Rob- bie  W.  Devoid,  32,  committed  the  of- fense  during  a  dispute  with  a  woman  that  was  allegedly  witnessed  by  a  two-Âyear-Âold  child. It  was  at  around  8  p.m.  on  July  27  that  Middlebury  Police  Officers  Kevin  Emilio  and  William  Austin  responded  to  the  Ossie  Road  home  on  a  report  of  a  disturbance. Devoid,  who  denied  having  touched  the  victim,  was  arrested  and  charged  with  domestic  assault  and  lodged  at  the  Marble  Valley  Correctional  Center  for  lack  of  $2,500  bail  prior  to  his  arraignment,  according  to  Emilio’s  court  affidavit. Police  warn  of  phone  scam  in  area VERGENNES  —  Vergennes  a  telephone  scam  after  two  Police  Chief  George  Merkel  is  complaints  last  week  of  callers  warning  area  residents  about  posing  as  law  enforcement  offi- cials  and  warning  residents  they  faced  arrest  if  they  did  not  send  payments.  In  at  least  one  case,  Merkel  said  a  caller  posed  as  a  U.S.  Treasury  agent. On  July  28  a  woman  in  Addison  called  to  say  a  man  with  a  foreign  accent  said  her  husband  would  be  arrested  if  she  did  not  send  money.  Merkel  said  he  called  the  number  that  was  provided  and  reached  voice  mail.  On  July  31  a  Vergennes  resident  reported  money  was  sent;Íž  Merkel  said  police  were  able  to  recall  a  portion,  but  not  all,  of  the  payment.  The  chief  said  anyone  receiv- ing  such  calls  should  report  them  to  police  immediately  and  not  send  any  money. ADDISON COUNTY — In recent activity in Addison Superior Court, Criminal Division, the following took place: Scott Boyle, 25, of Middlebury pleaded guilty by waiver to a May 26 charge of care- less or negligent driving, and was ordered to complete the Reparative Board and was fined $147. Donald Leon Brown, 48, of Bristol plead- ed guilty to April 29 charges of driving under the influence, second offense, and careless or negligent driving, and was sentenced to 36 months, all but seven days suspended, and a 180-Âday license suspension, and was fined $1,044. Samuel T. Cote, 30, of Brandon pleaded guilty to an April 1 charge of driving with a suspended license, and was ordered to com- plete the Reparative Board, and was fined $147. Mark A. Currier, 27, of Salisbury pleaded guilty to a charge of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult, and was sentenced to 8 years, all but 60 days suspended with credit for time served; was ordered to complete 250 hours of community service, including at least 10 hours serving children and adults with learning disabilities; was ordered to make restitution of $562.49 to the victim; and was fined $147. Pauline Dunham, 56, of Vergennes pleaded innocent to a June 16 charge of driv- ing under the influence, and was released with conditions. Michael Grace, 59, of Groveport, Ohio, was found guilty by a jury of a Nov. 19, 2013, charge of driving under the influence, third offense, and was sentenced to three years, all but 10 days suspended; had his license revoked; and was fined $207. The sentence was stayed pending appeal. Kyle Hamblin, 23, of Middlebury pleaded innocent to July 6 charges of driving under the influence, second offense, and driving with a suspended license, and was released with conditions. Quamir Harmon, 18, of Newark, N.J., pleaded guilty to June 15 charges of simple assault and aggravated assault, and was sentenced to 36 days and was fined $294. Jerry L.
