5HÀHFWLRQV RQ FDWFKLQJ QDWLYH DQG LQYDVLYH WURXW There  I  was  again,  having  spent  three  days  traveling  along  beauti-­ ful  Wyoming  trout  water  without  a  chance  to  actually  wet  my  line,  just  as  I  had  the  previous  week  (and  in  my  previous  column).  Only  this  time  it  was  in  the  Shoshone  National  Forest  and  Yellowstone  National  Park,  rather  than  the  Bridger-­Teton  Na-­ tional  Forest.  We’d  visited  one  river  where  introduced  trout  had  devastated  the  population  of  na-­ tive  cutthroat  trout.  And  we’d  spent  a  day  with  a  U.S.  Forest  Service  bi-­ ologist  visiting  a  river  that  had  been  chemically  treated  to  kill  invasive  ¿VK DQG WKHQ UHSODQWHG ZLWK D VWUDLQ of  cutthroat  native  to  Wyoming  â€”  a  project  similar  to  one  I  wrote  about  in  my  previous  column  from  a  couple  hundred  miles  further  south.  Another  day  was  given  mostly  to  travel  across  WKH KRW ÀDW H[SDQVHV RI :\RPLQJ DQG to  the  necessity  of  doing  laundry  after  a  week  in  the  wilderness.  We  had  lots  RI ¿OP IRRWDJH DQG LQIRUPDWLRQ IURP our  interviews.  But  I  had  no  photos  RI PH FDWFKLQJ WURXW EHFDXVH P\ ÀLHV had  not  even  been  in  the  water. Finally  we  were  settled  in  to  a  Na-­ tional  Forest  Service  campground  on  the  North  Fork  of  the  Shoshone  River.  It  was  evening.  We  had  an  early  morn-­ ing  schedule  to  pack  up  our  tents  and  take  a  drive  to  visit  more  trout  water  ZKHUH , FRXOGQ¶W ¿VK %XW IRU QRZ I  had  a  couple  hours  until  sunset  to  head  out  into  river,  just  a  short  stone’s  throw  from  my  tent.  I  put  my  rod  together,  pulled  on  my  waders,  and  headed  out.  Julia  and  Yuki,  my  research  as-­ sistants  came  with  me,  Julia  with  KHU RZQ À\ URG DQG <XNL ZLWK KHU video  camera.  We  crossed  the  river  on  a  primitive  bridge  and  walked  50  yards  upstream  to  a  bottom  of  a  nice  ORRNLQJ ULIÀH ZKHUH D VPDOO VWUHDP ÀRZHG LQ IURP WKH QRUWK ² D VWUHDP the  biologist  told  us  still  had  wild  cut-­ throat  trout,  even  though  the  main  stem  of  the  river  was  dominated  by  LQWURGXFHG UDLQERZV , OHW -XOLD ¿VK WKH VHDP MXVW EHORZ WKH FRQÀXHQFH , ZDGHG WKH WULEXWDU\ DQG ¿VKHG RQ WKH upriver  side. Five  minutes  later  I  was  releasing  a  fat  North  Fork  rainbow  trout,  about  18  inches  long,  and  Yuki  had  several  minutes  of  footage  of  why  many  lo-­ cal  anglers  were  happy  to  have  these  (See  Dickerson,  Page  2B)

6ZLPPHUV PDNH D VSODVK DW ¿QDO OHDJXH PHHW Champs  swam  to  7  victories,  Midd  gets  1 By  ELLIE  REINHARDT VERGENNES  â€”  The  Sam  Fish-­ man  Pool  in  Vergennes  was  bursting  with  more  than  540  swimmers  this  past  weekend  as  it  hosted  the  Champlain  Valley  Swim  League  Championship  Meet  on  Friday  and  Saturday. The  Vergennes  Champs  and  the  Mid-­ dlebury  Swim  Team  both  saw  a  number  RI VWURQJ ¿QLVKHV DQG EHVW WLPHV OHDG-­ LQJ WKH WHDPV WR ¿QLVKHV RI IRXUWK DQG seventh  place,  respectively. Eight  teams  competed  in  the  meet,  culminating  in  1,609  individual  entries  and  186  relays.  Defending  champs  the  Edge  Swim  Club  of  Williston  won  the  title  with  a  combined  girls’  and  boys’  score  of  2,960.
