Armwrestlers  aim  for  glory  at  the  fair Hundreds  grapple  for  Field  Days  titles NEW  HAVEN  â€”  The  annual  Ad-­ dison  County  Fair  and  Field  Days  armwrestling  event  this  past  Friday  evening  drew  even  more  competitors  than  last  year  â€”  231  this  year  com-­ pared  with  223  in  2014.  In  all,  152  adults  and  79  kids,  from  all  across  northern  New  England,  New  York,  Canada  and  Florida,  crowded  into  the  main  show  tent  to  prove  who  was  strongest  in  a  series  of  mano  a  mano  face-­offs. Last  year’s  big  winner,  who  swept  four  events,  came  back  to  earth  this  year  â€”  somewhat.  Vermonter  Adam  Barup  won  both  the  Men’s  Right  and  Men’s  Left  in  the  199-­220-­pound  class,  and  he  claimed  second  in  the  Men’s  Left  heavyweight  class  and  third  in  the  Men’s  Right  heavy-­ weight.  Not  a  bad  night. New  Yorker  Jessalynn  Carosella  swept  the  women’s  143-­pounds-­ and-­under  left  and  right  events,  plus  second  in  the  Women’s  Right  at  144-­pounds  and  over,  and  third  in  Women’s  Left  at  144-­plus.  New Â

Hampshire  resident  Cathy  Merrill  claimed  the  144-­plus  titles  with  both  arms.  Local  George  Sheldrick  was  the  only  other  double  winner. The  girls  and  boys  combined  ages  2-­5  class  drew  16  entries. Vergennes  man  wins  triathlon  at  Branbury SALISBURY  â€”  Racing  in  the  Vermont  Sun  Sprint  Triathlon  for  WKH WK WLPH LQ QLQH \HDUV &RU\ &RIIH\ RI 9HUJHQQHV ZRQ KLV ÂżUVW RYHUDOO WLWOH LQ &RU\ Robinson  of  Brandon  was  the  run-­ ner  up  in  1:05:22.  The  triathlon  â€”  which  consisted  of  a  600-­yard  swim,  14-­mile  bike  and  3.1-­mile  run  â€”  was  held  Sun-­ day,  Aug.  9,  at  Branbury  State  Park  LQ 6DOLVEXU\ IRU WKH WKLUG DQG ÂżQDO time  in  the  2015  season.  &RIIH\ ÂżQLVKHG IRXUWK LQ WKH -XQH race  and  second  in  July. Bristol  woman  claims state  horseshoe  title BENNINGTON  â€”  Bristol’s  Debra  Brown  continued  her  win-­ ning  ways  on  the  horseshoe  courts  when  she  won  the  Women’s  title  in  the  Vermont  State  Championships  at  the  Bennington  Horseshoe  Club  this  past  Sunday. Brown  tossed  a  perfect  4-­0  record  in  the  competition,  hitting  ringers  on  more  than  three  out  of  every  four  throws.  Brown  won  the  Women’s  World  Title  at  the  World  Horseshoe  Pitching  Championship  in  Kansas  last  month. It  was  old  â€”  and  then  it  was  new I  had  forgotten  just  how  much  fun  it  is  to  go  to  a  professional  baseball  game  in  Burlington.  I  used  to  go  all  the  time,  but  age,  obligation,  and  habit  combined  to  change  my  sum-­ mer  routines.  I  became  less  keen  to  drive  up  Route  7  to  Centennial  Field  (and  back!)  night  after  night. 7KH ÂżUVW IHZ \HDUV WKH ([SRV ZHUH here  (they  arrived  in  1994),  we  had  season  tickets  and  came  to  as  many  games  as  we  could,  giving  away  our  tickets  to  Middle-­ bury  friends  when  we  were  other-­ wise  obliged.  Our  seats  were  right  behind  home  plate  just  under  the  press  box.  We  had  a  motley  crew  up  surrounding  us  â€”  Dominic,  John,  and  Joe.  Old  Middlebury  friend  Russ  Reilly  had  the  two  seats  next  to  us.  We  cheered  for  our  favorite  play-­ ers  from  our  aerie  behind  home.  For  two  years  the  Expos  had  a  scintillat-­ LQJ RXWÂżHOGHU QDPHG (G %DG\ steals  in  1996).  Whenever  he  came  XS RU ZDV RQ ÂżUVW ZH URFNHG WKH chant  â€œEddie,  Eddie!â€?  The  whole  crowd  joined  us. We  maintained  a  running  dialogue  with  Rich  Haskell,  the  PA  announcer  (still  doing  it!),  only  about  10  feet  away  in  the  press  box,  and  abused  WKH RIÂżFLDO VFRUHU IRU LJQRULQJ RXU recommendations  on  hits  and  errors.  Every  game,  we  held  a  Celebrity  (See  Lindholm,  Page  3B)
