‘A-ÂHa!  moments’  and the  Cuban  Giants Some  time  ago,  spring  2003,  I  was  doing  research  in  the  Sheldon  Mu- seum  in  town,  looking  at  newspapers,  the  Middlebury  Register,  from  the  1880s  and  ’90s.  I  had  been  asked  by  Andy  Wentink,  the  archivist  at  the  Sheldon  at  the  time,  to  prepare  something  on  base- ball  as  part  of  a  series  on  Recreation  and  Leisure  in  Addison  County  in  the  19th  century.  It  was  interesting  work,  but  some- thing  of  needle-Âin-Âthe-Âhaystack  re- search.  I  was  looking  for  the  earliest  references  to  base- ball  in  the  Register.  7KH ÂżUVW PHQWLRQ I  found  was  in  Au- gust  1862,  a  brief  account  of  a  “trial  gameâ€?  played  by  the  Green  Moun- tain  Base  Ball  Club:  “It  was  highly  exciting  and  afforded  excellent  entertainment.â€? In  1866,  another  “game  of  ballâ€?  on  the  Fairgrounds  was  played  on  Aug.  6  by  the  “Midd.  College  Base  Ball  Club.â€?  The  following  year  the  “Col- lege  Clubâ€?  played  against  a  combined  team  of  local  clubs,  the  Fearnaughts  and  Wide  Awakes,  and  won  47-Â38.  (See  Lindholm,  Page  2B)

Entrepreneur launches online guitar store in Middlebury By  EMMA  COTTON MIDDLEBURY  —  One  day  last  month,  in  his  storefront  on  Sey- mour  Street,  musician  Bill  Scha- fer,  the  man  who  once  founded  Otter  Music  and  then  Burlington’s  Advanced  Music,  pulled  a  shiny  acoustic  guitar  —  a  2014  Guild  —  from  the  spot  where  it  hung  on  the  wall.  “It’s  a  beautiful  guitar,â€?  Schafer  said,  plucking  a  few  strings  that  reverberated  a  clear,  rich  sound.  “Guild  is  an  American  icon.  They’ve  been  around  for  a  long  time.â€? Shafer  bought  the  guitar  —  nor- mally  listed  at  $2,800  —  from  MIRC,  a  company  that  receives  rejected  guitars  from  brands  like  Guild,  Fender,  Epiphone  and  Taylor.  MIRC’s  authorized  repair  team  refurbishes  the  instruments,  ensuring  that  the  guitars  are  not  compromised  structurally  and  that  their  sound  is  as  full-Âbodied  as  new.  By  working  with  MIRC,  and  through  his  own  independent  shopping,  Schafer  has  expanded  his  collection  to  more  than  50  gui- tars. He  plans  to  sell  the  Guild  guitar  for  $1,132  —  less  than  half  price.  The  guitar,  along  with  all  of  his  others,  will  be  available  on  a  site  called  The  Guitar  Store  (thegui- ENTREPRENEUR  BILL  SCHAFER  holds  one  of  the  many  guitars  he  is  selling  at  The  Guitar  Shop,  his  new  retail  outlet  on  Seymour  Street  in  tarstore.com),  which  Schafer  will  Middlebury.  While  there  is  a  physical  storefront,  Schafer  plans  to  operate  primarily  online  and  mainly  sell  guitars  he  has  refurbished  himself. launch  in  the  coming  weeks.  Independent  photo/Trent  Campbell  The  Guild  acoustic  has  a  tiny  gap  in  the  binding  split  at  the  base  month,  enabling  visitors  to  browse  IHUÂśV FRQÂżGHQW KH KDV ZKDW LW WDNHV owned  a  greenhouse  with  a  farm  full  circle  that  started  48  years  ago  RI WKH JXLWDU EXW LW ZDV ÂżOOHG LQ E\ the  growing  collection  of  acoustic  to  build  an  online  presence.  and  creemee  stand,  then  bought  the  ZKHQ KH ÂżUVW EHJDQ WR SOD\ JXLWDU MIRC’s  repair  team.  and  electric  guitars.  He’ll  also  use  “I  probably  have  at  least  above  Marquis  Theater  in  Middlebury  10  At  11,  he  taught  himself  to  play  by   “It’s  imperceptible,â€?  Schafer  the  physical  space  for  the  repair  side  average  knowledge,  because  I  years  ago,  which  he  upgraded  and  sitting  on  the  edge  of  his  bed  with  said.  “There  are  no  structural  is- of  his  business,  and  to  sell  strings  owned  a  store  that’s  been  on  the  sold  in  February.  Having  grown  up  KLV ÂżUVW JXLWDU D +DJVWURP OLVWHQ- sues  —  it  doesn’t  affect  the  quality  and  smaller  items,  but  the  store  is  other  side  of  this  equation.  I  know  in  a  family  that  owned  many  dif- ing  to  the  Allman  Brothers.  of  the  guitar.â€?   mostly  a  home-Âbase  for  the  busi- how  the  companies  work  and  how  ferent  small  businesses,  Schafer  Now,  Schafer  can  be  found  play- Schafer  doesn’t  think  guitarists  nessman  to  tend  to  his  website.    the  dealers  work  and  the  pricing,  said  he  easily  becomes  restless  ing  at  51  Main’s  Blues  Night  in  will  be  discouraged  by  Schafer  says  he’s  so  that  gives  me  pretty  good  in- staying  in  one  place  for  too  long.  Middlebury  on  the  third  Wednes- the  small  cosmetic  de- planning  to  keep  the  sight.â€? “There  were  a  lot  of  other  things  day  of  each  month.  Restless  as  he  ADDISON COUNTY tails  that  separate  the  operation  fairly  low- The  new  platform  is  not  Scha- that  interested  me,â€?  he  said.  “I  may  be,  music  seems  to  have  root- guitars  from  their  new,  key,  but  in  a  world  IHUÂśV ÂżUVW URXQG ZLWK WKH PXVLF couldn’t  see  myself  doing  one  ed  Schafer  to  the  community,  and  market-Âprice  cousins.  with  eBay,  Amazon  and  EXVLQHVV +H RSHQHG KLV ÂżUVW PX- thing  my  whole  life.â€? to  his  new  online  platform,  which  “Guitar  players  are  many  other  independent  sic  shop,  called  Otter  Music,  in  In  February,  after  selling  the  he  predicts  will  last.  VR Ă€XLG LQ WKHLU DFTXLVLWLRQV 7KH\ online  music  shops,  he’s  entering  a  1983.  After  a  year,  he  picked  up  Marquis,  Schafer  took  a  vacation.  “I  guess  by  default,  I’m  doing  have  something  that’s  a  better  competitive  market.  and  moved  to  Burlington,  where  With  his  dog  and  a  friend,  he  trav- this,â€?  he  said. deal  —  it’s  not  like  a  car,  where  He’s  not  totally  on  his  own,  he  renamed  the  store  Advance  eled  around  the  country.  During  The  Guitar  Store  will  be  open  it’s  been  driven  and  worn  out,â€?  he  though.  After  placing  an  ad,  he  hired  Music.  The  store  is  still  the  largest  that  time,  he  visited  a  few  friends  from  noon  to  5  p.m.  Tuesdays  said.  Fabien  Rainville,  a  27-Âyear-Âold  who  in  the  state.  who  owned  music  shops,  which  through  Thursdays,  on  Fridays  Schafer  plans  to  operate  primar- lives  north  of  Middlebury  and  has  Schafer  left  Advance  Music  in  led  him  back  to  his  passion  for  from  noon  to  6  p.m.,  and  Satur- ily  online,  where  he  will  mainly  agreed  to  design  the  website.  the  late  ’90s  and  subsequently  music.  days  from  noon  until  4  p.m.  His  sell  guitars  he  has  refurbished  him- “He’s  really  computer  savvy,â€?  became  involved  in  a  variety  of  By  opening  this  new  music  website,  the  guitarstore.com,  will  self.  His  storefront  opened  just  last  Schafer  said.  With  the  help,  Scha- entrepreneurial  adventures.  He  store,  Schafer,  59,  is  completing  a  be  live  in  the  coming  weeks.
