Janis Sanders
Usually Sanders, a native of upstate New York, likes to spend his afternoons painting outside, WSQIXMQIW LMKL SR E FPYÇş SZIVPSSOMRK XLI ocean on the coast of Maine or Massachusetts. His work is iconic, in part for the two colors that dominate his seaside vistas: a glowing series of yellows, on a spectrum between polished gold and neon, and his hypnotic French ultramarine. With these two colors Sanders represents the power and intensity of the forces that shape the sea, sun and sky.
"THERE ARE SOME INSTANCES THAT ARE TAKE-YOUR-BREATH-AWAY MOMENTS. THOSE MOMENTS ARE THE THINGS I TRY TO CAPTURE IN MY PAINTINGS.�
His sparse set up — a cardboard box of paints, plein air easel and all-terrain leather boots — is poignantly geared to get him to the point of creation as quickly as possible. This urgency is especially apparent in how he applies his colors: tube to knife, knife to panel. Scrape, blend. Repeat. His expediency is not utilitarian; it’s “all about keeping the freshness,â€? Sanders says his art is all about process. What happens on the canvas is what excites him: blending colors on the surface itself, building textures, and what he calls “tricking the brain.â€? To demonstrate, he spread a blue rectangle to represent the glass of the window across Main Street, because “that’s what you expect glass to be, blue.â€? If you’ve been in Edgewater Gallery on the Green recently, you may have seen a tall man with a ponytail holding a tube of crimson paint in one hand as he scraped with a palette knife in the other creating on the panel before him his view of Middlebury’s Main Street. Meet Janis Sanders.

opened for me was the awareness of temporary nature of things,� he said, “the spontaneity of a moment. There are periods where there is a particular illumination on a drop of rain or blade of grass... There are some instances that are take-your-breath-away moments. Those moments are the things I try to capture in my paintings.� Sanders began painting in his late 30s, that was 5 to 6 years before he decided he wanted to attend art school. “Going to art school was really a function of being frustrated with not having the tools to express what I wanted to convey,� said the 66-year-old Massachusetts College of Art alum. “A three to four hour walk in the early morning with the birds — a magical, glistening awakening time — encapsulates my love of nature,� Sanders said.

Back Roads and Country Places took Sanders and his easel outside and all over Vermont to paint 16 new paintings for his solo exhibit at Edgewater on the Green. It took Sanders just two months to paint 16 of the 24 pieces, not counting the research time in locating the scenes by driving around Vermont scouting. “I grew up in Syracuse,� he said, “and there are many parallels between the Vermont landscape and the upstate New York landscape — parallels in the barns, farms and the big sky. So this was personal for me.� The structure of his chosen tool — the palette
knife — lends itself to the sharp lines of Vermont’s old buildings, the fraying texture of old boards and the slope of a barn wall. In terms of color, Sanders’ new pieces predominantly feature the deep emerald of the mountains. But his favorite colors are not far behind. Meet the chef Douglas Mack from Mary’s Restaurant in Bristol

appy Father’s Day, Doug! If anyone deserves a quick pat on the back, it’s probably Douglas Mack — chef and co-owner of Mary’s Restaurant and Inn at Baldwin Creek with his wife Linda Harmon. Not only is Doug the father of two daughters; (ahem, I mean coworkers) — Laura (who helps in the kitchen and with the ice cream) and Martha (who mixes drinks) — but he was also one of the founders of the Vermont Fresh Network and is a driving force behind the slow-food and sustainable foods movement. It all started when Mack, a New Jersey native, decided to get a Fine Arts degree in photography and painting from Ohio University. “I used plastic toy cameras,â€? When he moved back to his hometown of Chester, New Jersey, he was cooking for a local restaurant and met Linda (who happened to be the general manager). In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s Mack worked for Tony Perry’s restaurants before buying Mary’s Restaurant in 1983 at its original location on Main Street in Bristol. The couple moved the restaurant to the Inn at Baldwin Creek nine years later in 1994. Technically, Mack is not a trained chef. “There really weren’t culinary schools back then,� Mack explained. “I give talks at NECI, read and travel so I don’t get tired. I try to keep an open mind.� Fourteen years ago, Mack and Harmon established annual culinary tours to Italy to promote a sustainable food model. The goal is to connect chefs with fresh, local and sustainable food. They also added culinary classes at Mary’s that teach farm-to-table cooking.

Lady’s Slippers extravaganza. Showy Lady’s Slippers (Cypripedium reginae) are sturdy plants with multiple stems that grow about 30 inches high and readily visible amongst the ferns and other bog plants.
LADY’S SLIPPERS FOR YOUR GARDEN A while back, a visitor to our garden, seeing my three clumps of Showy Lady’s Slippers, blurted out in a LSVVMǻIH ZSMGI Ƹ)MH ]SY take those plants from the wild?” Nothing could be further from the truth! It goes without saying that taking rare plants like Lady’s Slippers from the wild is strictly forbidden. But, some ten years ago, I bought a single plant of the Showy Lady’s Slipper from )SR &ZIV] SJ (EH]ƶW +EPPW Nursery in Morrisville who has perfected the technique SJ TVSTEKEXMRK XLIWI HMǽGYPX plants from seed in a nursery setting. In the wild the seeds of Lady’s Slippers will only germinate in the presence of a particular fungus, a condition that is next to impossible to duplicate in the nursery. But about twenty years ago it was discovered that, if the dustlike seeds are infused with a special mix of hormones and sugars, they can also be persuaded to germinate. The resulting seedlings are very slow growing — it takes EFSYX ǻZI ]IEVW FIJSVI ]SY have a salable plant.
