Since 1938, the Association has been blessed with volunteers who were devoted to the enjoyment and preservation of the lakes and its surrounding environment. From trash collection in the 1940s, through decades of development, beyond the mosquito issues of the 1970s to our current challenge of aquatic invasive species, LDFLA has been at the forefront of addressing problems and finding solutions. The Association is committed to keeping members informed on issues and events via newsletters, website postings, emails and social gatherings. We sponsor educational forums, support mosquito control efforts, inform members about impactful legislation, test water quality, promote water safety practices and are instrumental in fostering the camaraderie of our lake community neighborhoods. By far, however, our single most concentrated commitment has been in the operation of the Milfoil Control Program. We are funded through the local townships of Leicester and Salisbury, State Grants and our loyal membership. We have now added funding support from the Lakes Alive Capital Campaign Endowment.
Lake Dunmore Fern Lake Association Celebrating over 75 Years of Service The most current and challenging problem in recent years is the proliferation of the aquatic invasive species, known as Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM). Discovered in 1989, the Association has devoted the vast majority of its budget and resources to the control of this species. The rapid growing characteristics of Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) threaten native vegetation, healthy fish habitat, overall lake ecology and recreational activities. Prior to 2016 we had evolved from hand-pulling to using four suction harvesters to combat the spread of EWM. However, we were still losing ground. In 2016 we applied state approved herbicides to heavily infested areas in both lakes. This resulted in a weakened growth last summer. But, we will continue to closely monitor both lakes and utilize hand and suction harvesting in both non-treated and treated areas until further use of herbicide, or other technology, may be warranted. The literature indicates that regrowth is eventually inevitable. Most lakes in North America face similar problems, with no complete remedy yet available. Additionally, other invasive species are now in nearby lakes, so we need to maintain our current vigilant commitment to protect Lake Dunmore and Fern Lake. Photo by Ashley Wolff

Do not feed the wildlife. However tempting, feeding ducks is bad for their health and pollutes the lakes. Feeding bears is a death sentence for them. It changes their behavior and evolves into the destruction of property and threats to people. In the end, the bear will be destroyed. Clean boat bottoms, trailers and props before launching, if you use your boat in any other body of water. This practice will decrease the chance of introducing new invasives into our lakes. Do not transport firewood. Buy or use local wood only. The emerald ash borer and the Asian long horned beetle both are looking to hitch a ride to wreak havoc in our neck of the woods. Check the performance of your septic system. There is a simple test you can perform using a dye tablet that will confirm your system is working properly. Ask the Town Health Officers for tablets.
Be a Good Citizen of the Lakes Some suggestions we can all adopt to make a real difference on the lakes Bring the party indoors after 9 pm. Noise travels on the lakes. Keep the volume at a minimum in the late evening hours so as not to disturb your neighbors across the lake. Adopt environmentally friendly fishing practices. Lead sinkers can cause lead poisoning in fish and waterfowl. Switch to steel sinkers. Dump your bait bucket on land. Dim or turn off outside flood lights after 10 pm. Join other lake lovers in star gazing instead. Reduce the amount of trash going to our landfills. Start composting. Recycle whenever possible. All hazardous material should be disposed of properly at the landfills on designated days. Never throw foreign objects or litter or hit golf balls into the lakes. Common sense should prevail. Do not use the lakes as a toilet or a bath. Soap degrades the water quality. Read the instruction and warnings on fertilizers, cleaners, paints, or any products that may come in contact with our lakes. pick up after your dog in public areas. If you rent your home, we suggest giving your tenants a copy of these guidelines. Teach your children to respect the environment and adopt good citizen practices to ensure the next generation will have a healthy environment to enjoy and remember.

The dangers of invasive species affecting the waters of our lakes are greater now than ever, even with the extraordinary efforts of our milfoil crews. Lake Dunmore and Fern Lake residents are well aware of the infestation of Eurasian Water Milfoil. We've been fighting it for decades. The LDFLA milfoil crews are a common sight on the water. Over the years, they've labored to remove the weed, and have achieved some balance in the fight. Last year was a particularly successful one, since we were able to use herbicide for the first time. This year and in the future, the herbicide permits are given sparingly, as over-use can reduce its effectiveness, much like antibiotics. Our milfoil fight is familiar. As tough as it is, we seem to be able to handle it. The probable loss of Federal funding will be challenging.
Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) Great Progress and a Look Ahead Another looming issue is other invasives. Lake Champlain is suffering from over 40 invasive species, and many have shown up in other Vermont lakes. We can consider ourselves fortunate to have only one. They travel from lake to lake by hitching on to boats and trailers. We assume that distribution also occurs through natural means, such as bird droppings, but mostly it's caused by humans. Starry Stonewart, Variable Leaf Milfoil, Hydrilla, Water Chestnut (just to name a few plants); Zebra Mussels, Asian Clams, and Spiny Waterflea are a few of the threatening animal species. Any one of these could overwhelm us. One positive note is that our individual lakes' makeup may or may not encourage any of these organisms. We just don't know. We don't want to find out. Prevention is our best defense! With a grant from Lake Champlain Basin Program, we guard the boat launch with professional greeters who are trained to recognize invasives and who can educate the public. We also have to be diligent by cleaning anything that moves from lake to lake. This includes boats, trailers, kayaks, boards, and especially fishing tackle. The Spiny Waterflea loves to attach to fishing line. In the proper conditions, it can collapse a fishery. A great resource for water and environment education is <www.lcbp.org>.

Eliminate Mosquito Breeding Places • Replace water in pet dishes or birdbaths at least twice a week. • Drain or fill in areas where water stands for more than four days. • Keep gutters free of debris to prevent water build-up. • Discard old tires, tin cans, bottles or other water holding containers. • Keep drainage ditches free of weeds and debris. • Cover trash cans and dumpsters. • Empty wading pools, unused swimming pools, wheelbarrows. • Store small boats covered or upside down. • Remove or thin dense shrubbery next to the deck or home. • If you see any mosquito breeding areas, call 802-247-6779.
Mosquitoes Elimination and Protection Optimize Protection Against Mosquitoes • Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and socks. • Treat clothing with permethrin or purchase pretreated clothing. Permethrin-treated clothing will retain repellent activity through multiple washes. • Apply lotion, liquid, or spray repellent to exposed skin. Reapply repellents as protection wanes. • Ensure adequate protection during times of day when mosquitoes are most active. Bothered by mosquitos? Call 802-247-6779 and request spraying. VERMONT WATER SAFETY RULES In the Boat • All vessels must have a personal flotation device (PFD) for EACH person on board. • All children under the age of 12 must wear their PFD at all times while on the water. • If you were born after January 1, 1974, you must take a water safety course to operate a motorized vessel. Visit www.boatsafe.com/vt.htm to take the course online. • Do NOT operate a boat if your blood alcohol level is .08 or above. Two beers can cause impairment. Better yet - be safe- don’t drink and drive a boat. Water Skiing, Tubing and Towing Every vessel towing a person on skis or tubes must have another person at least 12 years old beside the operator to observe the person in tow. A skier must not come closer than 100 feet to a swimmer or small vessel.

The summer of 2016 was one of mixed blessings for the loon lovers in the area. Our pair on Lake Dunmore laid two eggs in the same spot as last year only to have the eggs disappear for unknown reasons during the second week. We were disappointed when the pair did not re-nest as usually happens with an early failure of a nest. We had mature loons here all summer but sadly no chicks. Silver Lake provided its share of drama also. That nest was found empty at about the same time as the one here on Lake Dunmore. The pair there recovered however, and two chicks were hatched in mid-July and as far as we know, flew off in the fall.
Common Loons Aquatic Birds of the Lakes Goshen Dam loons added to our emotional roller coaster when observed loon behavior indicated yet another possible shoreline nest failure there. That one was likely due to fluctuating water levels. There was a happy ending when that pair re-nested on a raft we placed there two summers ago for just that reason. The first two chicks ever were hatched at Goshen Dam and one chick survived to leave there at the end of the season. Back in 2010, trouble was brewing. The aquatic invasive species known as Eurasian Milfoil was spreading beyond our control. State grant monies were declining as a percent of our needs. Additional funds had to be found. In 2013 we launched the Lakes Alive Now and Forever Capital Campaign with the dual goals of meeting our current needs and funding an EndowMEnT to generate a steady income stream for the future. we are now entering the final years of the campaign. Success by nearly every measure imaginable has been achieved. our original goal of $1,725,000 has been met thanks to the 581 donors. Today, optimism, congratulations, hope and reality abound.
Lakes Alive Now and Forever A Capital Campaign Optimism stems from the facts! we are well on the way to exceeding financial goals designed to help meet current needs and provide income for the future. Pledges have reached $2,289,885. Receipts are at the $2 million mark. Congratulations are certainly in order. As a community, we have done what some deemed “impossible�. we began with the dual goals of meeting current needs, which we could see with some, but not absolute, clarity and building an EndowMEnT intended to live in perpetuity. Revenues enabled us to fund the recent herbicide costs and the EndowMEnT has now reached $1.3 million, exceeding our initial minimum goal. Hope also abounds! Hope that our community of donors will continue to grow. no gift is too small (nor too large might we add). we ask only that you give as you are able. The Campaign will run through the end of 2018, so gifts can be spread over two years. we invite you to join our family of donors and show the world (and especially the state) the strongest community ever. Reality also exists! The threat of other aquatic invasive species continues to grow. when Lakes Alive began the concept of a new income stream of $50,000 (the annual projected EndowMEnT income) seemed very substantial. Today, with state budgets under ever increasing pressure, we may need all the income the EndowMEnT can produce and more. Fund raising will continue to be a topic in the future. It is simply our current reality. Together we can and will meet the Eurasian Milfoil challenge and future threats to our lakes! Contributions may be in the form of single donations, multi-year pledges in cash or stocks, or planned giving gifts. Help preserve our lakes for future generations!
