Bristol is one of those historic 18th-century Vermont towns that is somehow also on the cutting edge of today. Vermont's "Little City" is the center for commerce, culture, education, and services to a wide area of Addison County. Vergennes was founded as Vermont’s first city in 1788 and is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Its commercial and residential core has remained largely intact throughout the years. Within its two square miles are many architectural gems. Some, including the restored Bixby Library and Vergennes Opera House and the verdant City Park with its charming bandstand offer music, education, and entertainment throughout the year. This intimate community has attracted many families and young professionals with vibrant restaurants and clothing shops, a chocolatier, a wine store, a florist, a barber and beauty salons, a seasonal farmers market, excellent schools, and more.

Located upon the magnificent Vergennes Falls, Vergennes is just ten minutes from Lake Champlain with its excellent swimming, fishing, boating and sailing opportunities; numerous Vermont State Parks and wildlife management preserves; the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum; Basin Harbor; and is central to outstanding Champlain Valley bicycle routes. For history buffs, Vergennes has a rich maritime, industrial, and agricultural heritage as well. Vergennes played a key maritime role in the War of 1812. The shipyard at the base of the Falls provided enough lumber, power, and skilled artisans to build five major warships during the winter of 1813. The ships ultimately traveled down the Otter Creek basin to Lake Champlain where American forces met and defeated the British Navy at the 1814 Battle of Plattsburgh.

A busy steamship business along the Otter Creek was the focus of Vergennes through the late 1840s. Access to trade routes by lake, rail, and canal allowed Vergennes to boom in the decades between 1840 and 1890, when many of the buildings we admire today were built. By the 1890s, the opening of the Western states made manufacturing less important—yet by 1893, the Falls were in use as a hydroelectric station, lighting the streets as Vergennes became, and continues to be, the vital commercial center for the surrounding community. MIDDLEBURY Middlebury occupies a sweet spot in rural Addison County: it has the attributes of a small, tightly-knit farm community and the sophistication of an internationally prestigious college all within one town line. Ideally located midway between Burlington and Rutland, Middlebury makes a great four-season destination for a day trip or for a longer stay.

Every street has dozens of well-kept buildings, and there are multiple micro-commercial centers mostly within walking distance of one another: along Main Street and below the falls; in the revitalized Marble Works, along the length of Exchange Street, and south of town along Route 7.

The interesting and very walkable town center has charming pocket parks and historical sites interspersed with storefronts, cafés, and restaurants. A recent major infrastructure overhaul accommodates the Amtrak express train that passes through town on its way from Burlington to New York City, creating a fresh new look and new opportunities for public outdoor music and food gatherings, as well as a convenient transportation option for travel.

Many of today's businesses manufacture their own products and invite you to watch their process. Artisanal bakeries, two breweries, a distillery, two cideries, and a vineyard add to the distinctive Vermont flavor of the town. Historic inns, a movie theater, the Town Hall Theater (featuring year-round music, dance, opera and plays), the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, and the Vermont Folklife Center are all an easy stroll from the Town Green and offer insights into Vermont culture from past to present.

Addison County has a rich history, found in centuries-old towns and industrial centers and in many high quality museums, art galleries, and performance venues. Of particular interest are the vibrant exploits and battles of early settlers and native peoples, who struggled for control of the area and its rich resources in the 18th century. Modern day reenactments of these battles are held during the summer months on both sides of Lake Champlain. This region was first mapped by the French. In 1609, Samuel de Champlain traveled at least as far south as the narrow straights at Chimney Point on Lake Champlain, now part of the State of Vermont's Historic Sites program. The English, French, and native peoples all traveled regularly on the lake and its tributaries. In a bold move, the French built a wooden fort at Chimney Point in 1731 to control the lake, and by the 1740s there was significant French settlement on both shores. In 1759, the English wrested control opening the door for more settlers.

In 1776 and 1777, the Addison County region was a hotbed of Revolutionary War activity, playing a key role in America’s road to freedom. American and British vessels, from canoes and bateaux to large warships, were common sights on Lake Champlain, and spies and scouts scoured the countryside. American colonial forces built one of the war’s largest fortifications, Mount Independence in Orwell, also a state Historic Site, as a defense against the British enemy to the north. Addison County has a number of superb historical museums that preserve the past and educate the public about the area's unique culture. Many are open seasonally, check websites for details. Fort Ticonderoga, on the shore of Lake Champlain in New York, was built by the French in the mid-1700s. Today, the Fort features as a living history museum, occupying almost 2,000 pristine acres with historic battlegrounds, the star-shaped fort, formal gardens, and hiking trails.

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum explores the history and culture of the "6th Great Lake". It's a waterfront museum with classes, camps, boat building, rowing, underwater research, and more located on one of Lake Champlain's most beautiful harbors. Free admission in 2022! The Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History has a permanent collection of 19th and 20th century Vermont furniture, paintings, and household objects, exhibited in an elegant Federal house ca.1829, with temporary special exhibits and special events. Rokeby Museum is a nationally significant farm museum with an Underground Railroad story tucked inside a quintessential Vermont experience. Described as "unrivaled" by the National Parks Service, Rokeby is the repository of a rich collection of artifacts and rotating exhibits. You can learn about the history of the "horse that helped shape our nation" at the University of Vermont's Morgan Horse Farm. Dedicated to the preservation of the Morgan horse, a unique American breed

and Vermont's state animal, this working farm hosts 40 horses and is open to the public for tours. The region's rich farmland, navigable waterways, and many powerful waterfalls provided opportunity for commerce and created prosperity as the nation grew. Many homes and industrial buildings of the period are well-preserved, and every town has buildings listed as designated historic places. Covered bridges are still in daily use (see page 62). Currently, there is an enormous investment in the area's arts, cultural, and performance organizations. The Town Hall Theater in Middlebury and the Vergennes Opera House in Vergennes are resuscitated 19thcentury landmarks which host a variety of events throughout the year. Mahaney Arts Center is a world-class arts & performing arts center at Middlebury College. Community arts organizations or historical societies thrive in every town; and a simple drive through the byways or sidewalk stroll in any area brings the past and the present to life in a captivating and delightful manner.

Middlebury Abby Pond Cascades, Abbey Pond Road. A series of cascades that drop almost 100 feet and are tucked under a thick canopy, this gem of a waterfall is just a short hike in. The best view is from the bottom of the cascades looking up. Middlebury Falls, Main Street. Otter Creek winds through the center of town and these spectacular falls are the piece de resistance of one of the most attractive college towns in the US. The 20-foot drop thunders all year long underneath Main Street while visitors peer over the sandstone bridge from sidewalks on either side, marvelling as thousands of gallons of water, and the occasional daring kayaker, plunge into the basin below. Pleasant, open parks line both sides of the falls with a pedestrian bridge that makes it easy to get from one historic shopping area to another. Middlebury Gorge, Route 125, East Middlebury. About 1.1 miles east of the junction with Route 116, there's an informal pull out. Below, there is a gorge, falls, and swimming area. The gorge is really popular with kayakers when the water is high; the falls are not huge, but it's a pretty spot to enjoy, especially on a hot day. Green Mountain National Forest Falls of Lana, Salisbury Across from Lake Dunmore, these falls live up to their lovely name. The trail to the falls is part of the network of trails in the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area.

There are many gorgeous cascades in Addison County. Most early settlements used hydropower to run lumber & grain mills. Middlebury and Vergennes have major waterfalls that are easily seen from the road, and are gorgeous focal points of these historic towns. Listed opposite are the most beautiful waterfalls in the area, some still harnessed for their power, some wilderness bound. Pictured here is Moss Glen Falls, an easily accessible cascade right along Route 100 in Granville.

Moss Glen Falls, Granville. Directly on Route 100 in the middle of gorgeous, windy Granville Gulf these spectacular 50' falls are one of Vermont's most photographed attractions. Just to the north, there is another cascade, Little Moss Glen Falls, which is arguably as beautiful and much less crowded.

Texas Falls, Hancock. One of the most spectacular and easiest-to-reach cascades in the Breadloaf Wilderness. Clearly marked signs on Route 125 leading to the trail. Vergennes Vergennes Falls, Main Street, Canal Street or MacDounough Street. Breathtaking cascades year round, about 37 feet high and five hundred feet across. Broken into three parts by rock formations on which mills were built in the late 1700s. The basin was, at one time, the site of a shipyard which helped defeat the British during the War of 1812. In 1893, the mills were converted to hydroelectric power. Gorgeous public parks flank the basin below the falls. Bristol Bartlett Falls, River Road. One of the most beautiful swimming holes in Vermont, with something for everyone. The New Haven River falls over multiple ledges, forming pools of varying depths. Access along River Road towards Lincoln provides multiple entry points. Burnham Falls, Bristol Memorial Park. Route 17. This condensed gorge is 47' from top to bottom and totally hidden from the road. A little scramble over rocks to view. Weybridge Bittersweet Falls, Bittersweet Falls Road. Best viewed during the spring, when increased flow creates a tumbling, two-sided, 20 foot plunge. Belden Falls, Belden Falls Road. A dam and hydroelectric station utilizes the river here, and the the gorge, about 100 feet long and about 15-25 feet high, is carved from two rocky islands below it. This site can also be reached via the Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) through Wright's Park and the Otter Creek Nature Preserve. Interesting pedestrian suspension bridge over the river!

HIKING Favorite day trips are Snake Mountain in Addison, Rattlesnake Cliffs overlooking Lake Dunmore, and the trails of Mount Independence State Historic Site. The Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) is an 18-mile footpath, open year round, encircling Middlebury. See pages 26-27 for more details on some the very popular TAM trail.

Green Mountain National Forest Visit the Rochester Ranger Station for maps, trail conditions, and forestry history. Breadloaf Wilderness

Buck Mountain 2.4 miles, 1.5 hours round trip. Good, moderate trail leading to lovely lookout over Lake Champlain. Owned privately, please respect restrictions and closures. Off Route 66 in Waltham.

Lincoln Peak or Mt. Abraham via Battell Trail. 6 miles. 4 hours round trip. Hike to the top of 4006' Mt. Abe for spectacular views in all directions. Elder Road, Lincoln.

This 21,480 acre parcel is protected from development to provide opportunities for primitive recreation and to allow natural forces to dominate the character of the land. It straddles the main ridgeline of the Green Mountain Range between the Lincoln and the Middlebury Gap. There are many day hikes here, especially hiking sections of the Long Trail (year-round) or the Catamount Trail (winter only). The hikes lead to the Long Trail between Route 125 in Middlebury to US Forest Service roads in Lincoln. Here's one option of many to explore: Breadloaf Mountain A 7 mile round trip for great views of Lake Champlain. Off of 125 in Ripton, take USFS 59 3.5 miles to parking area. Hike the Skylight Trail to the Long Trail, then head north 1.1 miles to the 3835' summit and a short spur to the west for the lookout. www.fs.usda.gov

Snake Mountain Mountain Road. 4+ miles, 2.5 hours round trip. This is a moderately difficult loop that pays off big with spectacular views. There was a hotel on the mountain that burnt down a century ago, so you travel up the old carriage road. Great place for a picnic! Mountain Road, Weybridge.

Moosalamoo Recreation Area

Sunset Ledge, 1.6 miles, 1 hour round trip. A short, sweet, steep scramble to a lookout ledge over all of Champlain Valley. Bring a headlamp for the hike down. Lincoln Gap Road, Lincoln. Abbey Pond 2.1 miles, 3 hours round trip. Follow old woods roads to a lovely wilderness pond and waterfall. Abbey Pond Road off US 116, Ripton.

Between Brandon and Ripton, this 36,000 acre wilderness region is protected for the use of camping, hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, and hunting. 70 miles of trails provide a variety of challenges for every ability. There are several access points to trail from clearly marked forest roads off of Route 125, Route 73, and Route 53. Easiest access is from a major trailhead opposite Branbury State Park in Leiscester. Day hikes range from 1.5 to 7.5 miles long. Some of the most popular are The Falls of Lana 0.7 miles/1 hour; Silver Lake 5.5 miles/3 hours; Rattlesnake Cliff 4.0 miles/3 hours; Mount Moosalamoo 7.6 miles/4.5 hours;. www.moosalamoo.org

The Breadloaf Wilderness, Moosalamoo National Recreation Area, and the Green Mountain National Forest form Addison County's eastern border— plenty of hiking adventures to last a lifetime. These well-maintained trails are just as much fun in winter (with proper preparation and equipment) as in summer. Whenever you hike, bring more water than you think you'll need, an extra layer just in case, and some calorie-rich snacks. These mountains may provide more of a challenge than you might expect!

WA L K I N G Middlebury/Weybridge Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) An 18mile path encircling the town of Middlebury links several hundred acres of town and conserved land. Some sections: Otter Creek Gorge 3+ mile loop starting from Morgan Horse Farm Road or Belden Falls Road. Wright Park A 3.8 mile network starting at the end of Seymour Street. Jackson & Johnson Trails. 1.9 & 0.8 miles. Sunny meadows and tranquil wetlands. An important stop on the Underground Railroad, this 90 acre site has a 1.5 mile interpretive

trail with of cultural markers. The museum offers a fascinating understanding into the role of stationmasters and refugees in the flight to freedom. www.rokeby.org Kingsland Bay State Park and Button Bay State Park. Both of these gorgeous waterfront public access parks and campgrounds are former farms and settlements. Now they provide sweeping views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack range. www.vtstateparks.com Vergennes Falls Park Trail A 3/4 mile nature walk along the banks of the Otter Creek Basin with easy views of the 37-foot waterfall as it plunges towards Lake Champlain, 7 miles to the west. Watershed Center A lovely 1.3 mile stroll through a variety of protected lands: wetland marsh, hardwood forest, and meadow. Limited parking. 4783 Plank Road, Bristol.

Mt. Independence Six miles of walking and hiking trails guide you past the archaeological remains of the general hospital, batteries, blockhouses, barracks, and soldiers’ huts, and offer scenic views of Lake Champlain. Robert Frost Interpretive Trail A 1.3 mile accessible loop that has some of the poet's work posted along the way. Just across Route 125, you'll find the cabin where Frost lived and wrote during the summers from 1939 to 1963. Nearby are the goldenrodcolored campus buildings of Middlebury College's historic Breadloaf Summer Writers' Conference.Route 125 in Ripton.

Lying at the base of central Vermont's Mt. Moosalamoo, Lake Dunmore is the gateway to Green Mountain National Forest. This sparkling lake is proof that you can have your vacation at the mountain and on the water at the same time. The lake functions as water storage for a hydropower dam several miles downstream. Vermont Fish and Wildlife keeps it well-stocked, to the delight of visitors and residents alike. Green Mountain National Forest borders the lake—more than 400,000 acres of wilderness to explore. Branbury State Park offers public access with a boat launch, a beach and recreation area, and some campsites on the east side of the lake. Waterhouses is a full-service marina and campground on the southwest side of the lake, with lodging, restaurant, beach, marine store, and rentals for every kind of vessel. There are many vacation homes available to rent for a week or for the entire season.

Popular activities include every kind of watersport, hiking, mountain biking, road biking, and bird-watching. Some of the most popular hikes in Addison County are adjacent to the lake; find them in this guide on page 24-25. Triathletes practice for a yearly competition held in the fall at Branbury State Park. In winter, fishermen can walk to their favorite hotspot rather than boat: ice fishing is a great way to defy a cold Vermont winter. Of course, winter also means crosscountry and downhill skiing, snowmobiling and hunting -- there is something for everyone in every season. The lake is located 8.5 miles from Middlebury and 7.5 miles from Brandon. Both towns have thriving arts organizations. Middlebury's Town Hall Theater and Middlebury College's Mahaney Center for the Arts, along with the many galleries and volunteer-led arts organizations in both towns have a full schedule in the coming year. Covered Bridges Covered bridges are among Vermont’s most treasured landmarks. Most have been recognized for their historical significance by being listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Many of Vermont's covered bridges have been in continuous use for more than 100 years, with periodic restorations that improve their utility while retaining their charm.

The Shoreham Covered Railroad Bridge

The Shoreham Covered Bridge Depot Road, Shoreham, is one of only two covered railroad bridges still standing in Vermont. It has Howe Trusses, which combine metal rods with wood, and reflects the type of construction used for most railroad bridges. Directions: 11 miles south Route 30 to Whiting 4 Corners, 2.8 miles toward Shoreham, then .7 mile on East Shoreham Road.

The Halpin Covered Bridge Halpin Road, Middlebury, is located over a natural waterfall and is the highest bridge above a streambed in Vermont. Directions: 1.3 miles Washington Street Ext., 1.6 miles north on Halpin Road, then .3 miles east on the dirt Halpin Covered Bridge Road. The Halpin Bridge The Pulp Mill Covered Bridge Seymour Street, Middlebury spans the town lines of Middlebury and Weybridge. It is a two-lane bridge of three spans and one of only six remaining in the United States. Built in the 1850s, it was fully restored in 2012. Directions: .7 miles north on Route 23, then .4 miles on Pulp Mill Bridge Road. The Pulp Mill Bridge The Spade Farm Covered Bridge is located on private property on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh. It was most likely built in the 1850s and moved approximately three miles from its original site in 1959.
