The Idea Greenhouse: A Space Where Ideas Grow The Idea Greenhouse© is more than a physical installation—it is a collaborative environment designed to help ideas take root, evolve, and flourish. Participants are invited to capture their thoughts on idea flyers, describing a challenge, opportunity, or potential solution. These flyers are then displayed on the walls of the Greenhouse, where they become visible to everyone taking part. Unlike traditional brainstorming sessions, the process doesn’t stop with the first idea. Other participants can read the flyers, contribute additional insights, ask questions, suggest improvements, or build upon existing concepts. In this way, every idea becomes a living conversation, enriched by diverse perspectives and collective creativity. Once the Greenhouse has been filled with ideas, Addictlab begins the “harvest.” The team collects every contribution, analyses recurring themes, identifies connections between ideas, and clusters similar concepts together. Rather than letting valuable insights disappear after an event, they are carefully organised and stored in Addictlab’s self-designed Idea Database. This growing knowledge base allows ideas to be revisited, combined, and transformed into new projects, research, workshops, hackathons, or real-world innovations. It ensures that conversations continue long after the event has ended. Just as plants need the right environment to grow, ideas need space, collaboration, and nurturing. The Greenhouse provides that environment—turning individual thoughts into shared knowledge and, ultimately, into meaningful impact. This magazine contains new ideas and the raw idea database. Challenge Young people and older adults often live, learn, and socialize separately, even though they have so much to learn from one another. Many teenagers are looking for mentors and meaningful connections, while many older people experience loneliness and social isolation.
Challenge Young people today spend most of their time at home, at school, or online. Many lack safe, welcoming places where they can meet friends, explore new interests, learn new skills, or simply belong. These community spaces—known as “tiers-lieux” (third places)—can help young people build confidence, creativity, and stronger connections with others.
Challenge Many young people experience stress, anxiety, loneliness, and pressure from school, social media, and everyday life. While more people are talking about mental health, many teenagers still don’t know where to find support or how to help a friend who may be struggling.
How can we create opportunities for different generations to connect, learn from each other, and strengthen their communities?
How can we design youth spaces that inspire young people to connect, learn, create, and take action in their communities?
Your Task Design a program, service, app, community initiative, or shared space that brings together young people and older adults through meaningful activities and lasting relationships. Your solution should: Encourage regular interaction between generations. Reduce loneliness and social isolation. Create opportunities to share knowledge, skills, and experiences. Be inclusive, accessible, and engaging for both age groups. Strengthen the local community. Possible Areas to Explore Shared community hubs or youth–senior centres Mentoring and buddy programmes Digital skills workshops led by young people Storytelling and oral history projects Community gardens or environmental projects Arts, music, cooking, or sports activities Intergenerational volunteering Technology that helps connect generations F ocus Areas Social inclusion and belonging Mental health and well-being Lifelong learning Community engagement Mutual respect and understanding Innovation for social impact
Group 2
Your Task Research what makes a great youth space and design your vision for a youth-centered “tiers-lieu” for 13–18 year olds. Possible Areas to Explore Mental health and well-being Creative arts and maker spaces Sports and recreation Music, gaming, and digital media Entrepreneurship and innovation Climate and sustainability projects Community volunteering Intergenerational activities Safe online and offline communities Focus Areas Youth participation and co-design Inclusion and belonging Creativity and innovation Lifelong learning Community engagement Accessible and sustainable design
How can we create solutions that help young people build resilience, support one another, and promote positive mental well-being? Your Task Design a project, app, campaign, product, service, or community initiative that helps improve the mental health and well-being of young people aged 13–18. Your solution should: Encourage healthy habits and emotional well-being. Help reduce stress, anxiety, or loneliness. Make it easier for young people to seek help or support others. Create safe, inclusive, and stigma-free environments. Empower young people to take care of their own well-being and that of their peers. Possible Areas to Explore Peer-support programmes Mental well-being apps or digital tools Mindfulness, relaxation, or stress-management activities School initiatives promoting mental health Safe spaces for connection and belonging Campaigns to reduce stigma around mental health Creative arts, sports, or nature-based activities that improve well-being Focus Areas Mental health awareness Emotional resilience Social connection and belonging Prevention and early support Inclusion and accessibility Healthy lifestyles

About the project. Over five days in the Greenhouse, created by jan van mol, Youth Delegates from different countries came together to discuss a topic many of us can relate to social connection. Through the Greenhouse and the WHO Youth Council, they exchanged ideas, shared perspectives from their own countries, and highlighted why Youth Delegate Programmes are so important in giving young people a voice in global health governance. The conversations didn’t stop there. Addictlab took many of those ideas and transformed them into hackathon challenges for a group of Imperial College London students, keeping the focus on SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being, with social connection at its heart. It was rewarding to see the students build on the Youth Delegates’ ideas and turn them into practical concepts within just a few hours. Congratulations to Kaya Tosun’s team for winning the hackathon with Give & Gain. Their app, which encourages people to connect through giving, sharing skills, and supporting one another, won the hearts of the jury.
A big thank you to World Health Organization and Imperial College London , WHO Collaborating Centre for Public Health Education and Training, Imperial College London for taking this project forward. It was a wonderful example of what can happen when different organisations work together and continue a conversation instead of letting it end with an event. Too often, good ideas are shared during conferences and workshops, only to stay in our notebooks. This time, the ideas continued their journey. I hope we see more collaborations like this, where conversations become challenges, challenges become prototypes, and young people’s ideas are given the opportunity to grow into something real. Common Ground Connecting Young People with Their Local Communities
Problem Statement Many teenagers are experiencing loneliness, social isolation, and reduced face-to-face interaction due to increased online engagement. Young people often struggle to find meaningful opportunities to connect with others, discover hobbies, and participate in activities within their local communities.
Solution
1 Rebuilding Social Connection
Common Ground is a digital platform that connects secondary school students (ages 11–16) with local community organisations, clubs, and activity providers. The platform acts as a central hub where young people can discover activities that match their interests while building friendships and improving their wellbeing.
Key Features Community activity directory Sports clubs and tournaments Art and creative workshops Nature walks and outdoor exploration Book clubs and reading challenges Mindfulness, meditation and wellbeing sessions AI-powered recommendations based on interests
Target Audience Young people aged 11–16 years.
The platform aims to: Strengthen community engagement Reduce loneliness Improve mental wellbeing Increase participation in local activities Help young people build confidence and friendships
Impact By encouraging young people to spend more time engaging in real-world community activities, Common Ground promotes healthier lifestyles, stronger social connections, and a greater sense of belonging.

The concept:
Give & Gain
Connecting Generations Through Shared Learning
Problem Statement Both young adults and older adults experience loneliness and social isolation. At the same time, different generations possess valuable skills and experiences that are rarely shared due to limited opportunities for interaction.
Solution Give & Gain is a skill-sharing platform that connects younger adults (18–24) with older adults through mutual learning experiences. Rather than focusing on one group teaching another, both participants act as learners and mentors by exchanging knowledge, hobbies, and life experiences.
How It Works
2 Integration of social programs for youth and elderly
Users create a personal profile. AI matches people based on interests and skills. Participants arrange meetings at approved community locations. They exchange knowledge through practical sessions and conversations. Example Matches
An older adult may teach: Architecture Gardening Bird watching Mathematics
A younger participant may teach: Painting Music Digital technology Crafts Both participants benefit from learning something new while building meaningful relationships.
Engagement Strategy The platform will be promoted through: Universities Social media campaigns Community centres Local organisations Success Measures
Impact will be measured using: In-app feedback Post-session questionnaires User engagement statistics Repeat participation rates
Impact Give & Gain reduces loneliness while preserving valuable knowledge across generations. It encourages lifelong learning, mutual respect, and stronger community relationships.
The concept:
Grow Together
Creating Safe Community Spaces for Young People
Problem Statement Many young people lack welcoming environments where they feel safe, valued, and supported. Opportunities to develop friendships, learn new skills, and participate in community life are often limited or inaccessible.
Solution Grow Together is a community-led initiative that creates safe physical spaces where young people can connect, learn, and grow. Rather than focusing solely on technology, the project emphasises inclusive community environments supported by partnerships with local organisations.
Core Pillars
3 More Youth Spaces
1. Safe & Belonging The initiative promotes: Physical and psychological safety Accessibility Diversity and inclusion Anti-bullying policies Social support A welcoming atmosphere A “second home” for young people 2. Connect & Collaborate Young people are encouraged to: Build friendships Work in teams Support peers Participate in youth co-design Develop leadership skills Co-create community activities
3. Learn & Grow Participants can explore interests through activities such as: Arts and creativity Music Sports Digital skills Career exploration Hobbies Yoga and wellbeing 4. Sustainable Impact The model is designed to: Use existing community buildings Partner with NGOs and local businesses Keep costs low Be easily replicated in different communities
Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals The project supports: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being SDG 4 – Quality Education SDG 5 – Gender Equality SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities SDG 13 – Climate Action
Impact Grow Together creates long-term community resilience by providing safe spaces where young people can build confidence, develop practical skills, and establish supportive social networks.
The concept:
Circle Up
Gamifying Mental Wellbeing for Young People
Problem Statement Young people aged 13–18 often experience mental health challenges but may be reluctant to seek support through traditional services. There is a need for an engaging, accessible solution that combines wellbeing support with social interaction.
Solution Circle Up is a mobile application that encourages positive mental wellbeing through AI support, social activities, games, and community engagement.
4 Mental Health
How It Works Daily Check-In Users answer simple wellbeing questions such as: How are you feeling today? Would you like to play a game? Upload an activity to earn rewards. AI Wellbeing Assistant An AI chatbot (“Zee AI”) provides: Emotional check-ins Friendly conversations Wellbeing guidance Signposting to appropriate support services Social Connection Users can: Join friends Participate in games Complete challenges Earn prizes and rewards Stay connected through positive activities Stakeholders
The project involves collaboration with: Community mental health counsellors Mobile app developers AI specialists Network providers Parents Local councils Young people themselves
Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being SDG 4 – Quality Education SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
Impact Circle Up makes mental wellbeing support more engaging by combining AI guidance, gamification, and peer interaction. It encourages young people to check in regularly, stay socially connected, and access support before problems become more severe.

The Team : Ania, Avleen, Madison, Luke, Mark
The Idea Despite being more connected online than ever before, many teenagers experience loneliness, anxiety, exclusion, and reduced face-to-face interaction. Social isolation can negatively affect both mental and physical health. Social media is designed to keep us hooked. Every swipe, notification, and like gives our brain a small dopamine hit, the same chemical linked to pleasure and reward. Over time, our minds become so used to this constant stream of stimulation that the simple moments in life begin to feel less exciting. A sunset, a meaningful conversation, or even sitting in silence can seem almost boring in comparison. As teenagers, we've grown up in a world where entertainment is always just a tap away, making it easy to overlook the joy hidden in life's quieter moments. We want to focus on highlighting the importance of the simple things. Through which we want to introduce an app called Spot. An app built on the belief that the best way to fight social media is through social media itself, designed to help teenagers build genuine, face-to-face friendships. Rather than encouraging endless scrolling, Spot uses technology to inspire real-life interactions by matching students who live in the same area and share similar interests. It’s created to build strong friendships, reduce loneliness, encourage sympathy, strengthen school-community connection and safe age-appropriate engagement. How it works: When creating an account, after identifying and locating themselves users select their interests, hobbies, and passions. Spot then matches two students from the same area who have similar interests, giving them the opportunity to meet someone they might never have crossed paths with otherwise. To encourage real-life interaction, certain features of their friendship cannot be unlocked digitally. Instead, the pair must meet in person and take a photo together through the app to verify their meetup. As they spend more time together, new features, achievements, and shared experiences become available, rewarding genuine friendships rather than screen time. Designing the app like a game will encourage them to get out more.
The app is designed in different pages but the most special one is the scrapbook. All your memories are put in one place for you to design and express yourself through stickers, colors and designs. As the community grows, Spot will expand beyond individual friendships. Instead of connecting only two students, we aim to organize monthly community events where dozens of students can meet in a safe and welcoming environment through an event organised by us or our sponsors. Business Model: To ensure Spot remains sustainable, we plan to collaborate with local businesses and sponsors. Cafés, restaurants, bookstores, and other youth-friendly venues would sponsor meetups by providing safe locations where users can connect. When participants meet at a sponsored location, they can take their verification photo featuring the venue or one of the sponsor's products. This creates authentic marketing for local businesses while giving teenagers enjoyable places to meet. Creating a feed in the app in which students would connect through. The promotion of the app would be through social media campaigns, influencer partnerships, and presentations delivered to students in schools. Branded badges, keychains and other merchandise emphasizing the app’s logo and main partner WHO would be worn by teachers, ambassadors, and other individuals involved in the project. Our long-term ambition is to partner with schools across different cities and countries, allowing students from larger communities to build friendships beyond their existing social circles. Through school partnerships, organized events, and collaborations with youth organizations, Spot has the potential to become a movement that helps teenagers reconnect with the real world and it is only the beginning to fix a world where people have forgotten how to live.

The Netherlands is being very creative with social connection: libraries have spaces where people can book time to connect with someone to talk, rather than just taking a book. Super markets have created special lines for elderly people so they have more time to interact and talk as they are more isolated. There are special IT projects for older people to help them with computers and provide face to face support and provide training in to connecting online with families etc

One of the major reasons people struggle with mental health is withholding emotions. In other words, having no one to discuss the every day issues. Having workshops where people can be open and have safe space with no judgment may ameliorate mental health and remove social barriers to share the emotions with one another
