The Subtlety of Suggestion
A telling statement is recorded twice in the book of Judges: “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 17:8 and 21:25) The question is how did Israel get here and what followed? The story starts with God’s desire to have companionship with whoever would fellowship with Him. He created mankind. He gave them limits. They crossed the line. Fellowship was broken. Discipline was quick. Man had failed to follow. God came to Adam and Eve in the cool of the evening to find them afraid because of their disobedience. When asked about their failure Adam blamed God, “The woman you gave unto me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.” When God asked Eve she said, “The serpent beguiled me and I did eat.” In hindsight, both were poor answers, but how many times have we been disobedient because we felt it right in our own sight? Somehow between the garden and the flood man continued to disregard God. Their evil became unbearable. God gave time to repent and then started over with Noah and his family. It might be wise for us to understand that God has always looked for the righteous, as he did Noah and other biblical characters. Some just choose to do what is right in God’s eyes. As time progressed and God sought ways to make man see a need to have fellowship with Him, Judges came on the scene and the people responded with more disobedience. They wanted a tangible God: one they could physically see and touch. They didn’t care whom, just that he not be invisible to the eye and untouchable with their hands. This is evident in Judges 17:8 and 21:25. By the way Judges 21:25 is the closing verse of the book of Judges. “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did what was right in his own eyes.” This statement was made long before Samuel anointed Saul king over Israel. It was subtle – just a suggestion. But it later became a fact, Samuel 8: 6. Was God happy to oblige the people? Here is what he said, “And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.” No fellowship. No regard for proper authority. No worship of a loving God. This was the early equivalent of “I want what’s mine and I want it now.” I wish I could tell you things got better. They got worse. One king after another came on the scene to rule. Some were good and some were bad, but all were a poor substitute for God’s leadership and fellowship. Where does all this leave us? In my lifetime, we have gone from prayer and Bible reading in public schools to seeing our classrooms resembling a reform school. We have watched our Supreme Court deny God’s part in human birth and allow full‐ term abortion. We have seen the same court affirm same‐sex marriage. We have watched, and still do watch, our televisions spew out blasphemy against the same God who created us for love and fellowship. We have watched our churches become fortresses to keep people out rather than lighthouses and sanctuaries to protect people from sin. We have become so fixated on numbers and buildings and popularity that we have quit preaching about the sins of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. Many churches, calling themselves Pentecostal, have begun to deny God access to His own house, and disallow‐ ing the expression of spiritual gifts on the assumption it might offend or confuse someone. Salvation has become learned rather than a deep spiritual experience. Let’s not even talk about the Holy Spirit baptism and divine healing. And while I’m on my soapbox, let me say, the false religions that are getting a foothold on our nation and world would not be successful if we who call ourselves Christian would speak in one voice, rather than doing what is right in our own eyes. Please let me remind you, God isn’t coming back after lukewarm, worldly people, but a church without spot or wrinkle or any such thing. He is looking for a remnant who will declare him God and seek to please him and no other. Could it be we have done what is right in our own eyes for so long that we have forgotten who should be in control? Remember, the suggestion of a king was made before one actually came. Subtle, huh? “GOD IS GREAT AND GREATLY TO BE PRAISED!”

Every minister in the Alabama AG Family is under constant satanic pressure and attack. We must bear one another's burdens as we see these pressures escalating. The spirit of antichrist is present and the devil wants to destroy our brothers, sisters and churches. We can and must cry out in regular and specific prayer. We can't just pray: "Lord, bless my ... amen." We are admonished in Galatians 6:2 to bear one another's burdens. Some burdens are too heavy to be borne alone because of the sudden flood of problems and intense demonic assault. We need one another and we need to pray for one another. I am hearing form many of our ministers, missionaries, and evangelists that need intercession. Please take your ADC yearbook and call out names of your brothers, sisters and churches and fight the good fight of faith for one another. Pray for a wall of protection from the world, flesh and the devil. Pray that our peers will recognize the wiles of Satan and that every thought be taken captive to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:3-5; Ephesians 6:10-13). Call out for a renewed anointing that "breaks the yoke." Allow the Holy Spirit to use you to "step into the gap" and "make up the hedge." If led of the Spirit call a peer and pray for them. If you need added intercession, the Assemblies of God has a 24/7/365 Prayer line: 1-800-4-PRAYER. In this new year, let's add special prayer for one another. It is a privilege to serve with you in this great endeavor for God. Cyndi and I are praying for you and ask you pray for us as well.

BGMC SURVIVE 5 – DUAL SURVIVAL Looking for a fun and challenging BGMC fundraiser? Join us for a wilderness survival experience designed to bring out the survivor man or woman in you. Yes, this year we are inviting male singles and married couples to be a part. We bring a minimum of equipment and one day’s food supply to the Sweetwater Lake area near Pinhoti Trail in Northeast Alabama. This year you are allowed to bring a gun in the event we spot a turkey. We will also be fishing. If we don’t get fish or fame, we don’t ear. Appropriate licenses are required. How does BGMC benefit? You will solicit sponsors who will help you raise a minimum of $750. Profits will be used to benefit a missionary with a BGMC approved project. The week will end with communion in a log church near our sight. We will also have daily

Merits of Biblical Counseling I have heard over the years well‐meaning ministers say something to this effect; “If you just get in the altar you won’t need counseling”. I believe what they are trying to say is that if you get your life right with God your problems will go away. This isn’t always the case. You can get things right with God, but if you continue the same behaviors that got you into the problem you will shortly find yourself there again. Some confuse secular counseling or therapy with Biblical Counseling. The goal of any true Biblical counseling is to help people change their beliefs and behaviors to be consistent with God’s Word. That indeed will bring change to people’s lives. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge believer in the ministry around the altar, but God’s Word also strongly emphasizes teaching, which in essence is what Biblical Counseling does. Consider these merits of Biblical Counseling. 1. Biblical Counseling reinforces what the Pastor preaches. The pastor and Biblical counselor work as a team to teach his people the Word of God. Their teaching is not in conflict. 2. Biblical Counseling deals with specific problems and timing. Preaching reaches the congregation as a whole or in general terms. Biblical Counseling can take the time to zero in on the person’s individual issues and needs. 3. Biblical Counseling is not an alternative to the altar or prayer. It certainly isn’t either/or. I agree a lot of secular counseling would be counter to Christian beliefs and conduct and I would not recommend most of it; however, Biblical Counseling coupled with prayer is a Biblical principle. Not only must we pray for people, but teach them how to live their lives Biblically. In a sense Biblical Counseling is Sunday School and preaching presented in a confidential, personal, one on one environment. 4. Biblical Counseling protects the pastor. Some counseling the pastor should not do himself. He should not counsel complex situations unless trained, he should avoid dealing with sexual problems or misconduct, especially with women in the congregation, and should avoid any counseling situation that would hinder the pastor’s ability to serve them as their pastor. Passing off to a qualified counselor in those situations allows the pastor to focus on being their pastor. 5. Biblical Counseling combines God’s Word with counseling techniques that are designed to help each individual understand and incorporate God’s Word. Everyone is different. People learn differently, people’s backgrounds and history is different, and people process differently. The Biblical counselor can take the time to navigate these differences to best serve the client. There are other good reasons to incorporate Biblical Counseling into your ministry repertoire, but one thing is for sure: Once you see the benefits, you will be glad you use this wonderful, Biblical resource.

In Loving Memory…. Rev. Bobby L. Clark of Castleberry, Alabama entered into his heavenly home October 8, 2016, at the age of 78. Funeral services were held at Monroe Chapel October 10, 2016, with Rev. Bar‐ bara Green officiating. Brother Clark came into the Assemblies of God from the Emmanuel Holiness denomination in 1975 as a licensed minister. He received ordination in 1984. His pastoral ministry within the Assemblies of God consisted of: Prattville First; Oak Grove, Frisco City; Oak Dale, Repton; Cal‐ vary, Leeds; Liberty Hill, Florala; Opp First; and Range, Repton. He also served in the Mississippi district and as an Evangelist. Brother Clark leaves behind his wife, Mary Frances, one son, one daughter, six grandchildren, nine great‐grandchildren, and three great‐great grandchildren. Rev. Chalen J. Campbell of Dothan, Alabama graduated to Heaven October 23, 2016, at the age of 79. Funeral Services were held at Blackwood Church, Headland, October 27, 2106, with Rev. Eddie Littlefield and Rev. Alice Burdeshaw officiating. Brother Campbell transferred into the Alabama district from the Southern Missouri district in 2001. His pastoral ministry carried him into the following cities: Pochontas, Illinois; Elmhurst, Illinois; Merriville, Indiana; Springfield, Missouri; Cape Girdeau, Missouri; and Headland, Ala‐ bama, where he served as pastor of Blackwood Church. Alabama District Council Scholarship Program
Church Ministry Scholarship: $3,000.00 For students pursuing ministries such as youth, C.E., leadership, music, church administration, etc.
Distance Education Scholarship: $1,000.00 For students pursuing online/correspondence ministry degrees at the institute, college, or graduate level
