Dear Members, As I write this report, we are on day one of another lockdown, after the COVID-19 Delta variant was confirmed in our community.

I have no doubt that if we had not been on the phone to the WA Department of Health until the early hours, that dental practice would be operating at Level 5 restrictions, as has occurred in the Northern Territory.

Advocacy is incredibly important within our association, and I hope all our members know we will always tirelessly work for you.

We lobbied for dentists to be considered for the WA lockdown grant assistance following the ANZAC-week lockdown, despite dental practices not being named in the eligibility list. We are glad that many dental practices have since been recipients of grant monies and I'm sure it goes without saying that ADAWA will again lobby on behalf of our members for any Government grant assistance that may be made available following this current lockdown.

We also encourage everyone in your practice to book in for their COVID-19 vaccination; it's not unrealistic to foresee a time when being vaccinated affects our ability to work and move around the community.

The latest lockdown is a reminder that, unfortunately, COVID isn’t going anywhere, so I please urge you to ensure you are subscribed to the ADAWA emails and that you join the ADAWA members' Facebook group and encourage your staff to join the ADAWA Partners in Practice Facebook group for updates.

The lockdown of 2020 — and the most recent stints in April and June — have been difficult on everyone in the dental industry, but especially for those who ended up separated from their families as a result.

For Ruohan Zhang, the story of being away from his family started well before COVID hit our shores.

When he made the decision to study dentistry at UWA, he had to leave behind his wife Olivia and family in New Zealand.

“My wife had received an offer to complete a second degree in law just after I had accepted my DMD offer, so we made a difficult decision for me to come first to Australia and for them to follow once we had both finished our studies,” Ruohan recalls.

“For the first three years, I flew back four times a year during our week-long semester breaks and Christmas holidays. Whenever we had a long weekend before a break or a lecture-free Friday, I would make use of the preceding weekend to stretch the visit out to 10 days, although each trip felt like the blink of an eye. It was fantastic when my wife and (son) Albert came over in 2018 just before having Walter, as we were able to spend time together as a family for a few months before they went back to New Zealand.”

Trying to find some balance between family and study across different continents, then five-year-old Albert ended up coming to Western Australia and joining Ruohan.

“I really missed the chance to have some real fatherson bonding experiences with Albert during my first two years in DMD,” Ruohan says. “While my wife focused on raising Walter (now two-years-old), working

and concurrently studying in NZ, Albert returned with me to Perth and we embarked on a year of adventure and unknowns in DMD3. Along the way, Albert tagged along to most UDSS, ADAWA and other dental events, and really enjoyed being part of the dental community, where everyone was so accommodating and friendly.”

COVID strikes Unfortunately, COVID threw another spanner into the works for the family when Olivia, Albert and Walter got stuck in China whilst visiting family in January 2020.

They remain in China for now.

“Not only have travel restrictions between China, New Zealand and Australia fluctuated throughout 2020, air travel prices have also skyrocketed and the risk of contracting COVID during travel remains undesirable,” Ruohan explains. “Hopefully, things will settle down a bit toward the middle of 2021 and they will be able to make it safely to Perth.”

Ruohan says initially when he first moved to Perth, being away from his family took a lot of getting used to.

“It was a major change from seeing and hugging your wife and children every night to being alone in a hot and humid student accommodation, not knowing how they were going or how my wife was coping,” he says. “The first few months were pre-occupied by quite a bit of initial concern and anxiety.

“As time passed, however, I realised that life is what it is, especially when it is a choice you made, and the important thing is not to focus on what you cannot control, but rather to direct your energy and attention into completing what you set out to do to make all the sacrifices worthwhile. Instead of simply being concerned for the family, I found emotional value in making sure I completed my DMD to the highest level; putting my concern into action, for example by sending the kids toys, flowers during special dates, or organising meal packs to make their life easier; and learning to let go of worrying about the family every moment and trusting that my wife had things handled.

Support from the dental community Ruohan says the dental community has been a great support. “Having never been previously involved in the clinical healthcare sector, I was really surprised by how close-knit and supportive the ental community is, particularly in WA, as well as the Dental School and my cohort,” he says.

“During something like COVID, which involuntarily takes away your freedoms to connect and creates so much risk in all facets of everyday life, I have found being in the right mental state and learning to direct my concern into positive actions particularly helpful in coping with what is otherwise objectively very dire and unfortunate circumstances,” he says, adding that another positive that has come out of the experience is that Albert is now fluent in Mandarin.

With China luckily in the same time zone, the family has been able to make the most of video calls, although with Olivia completing her final law papers remotely, of late the opportunities to sit down and have a good conversation have been scarce.

“Not only did I receive a lot of support from academic staff to reflect my family responsibilities, when we were told children couldn’t be in the hospital for the birth of our second boy, my classmate Nathan and his wife Mandy didn’t hesitate at all in offering to look after Albert for the day so we could focus on Walter. I was lucky in having a very cohesive cohort throughout the four years, and even from day one, everyone would frequently check up on how the family were doing. As a result of the shift to a postgrad degree, there were also quite a few parents in my year, between whom we could often have a chat about raising kids, school and family.

“I have to say that even though both my wife and I like to plan everything out in advance, the sheer amount of ‘life’ that concurrently undertaking the various aspects of Dental School and raising a family whilst in two separate countries throws at you was only survivable with the immense empathy and support around me across these four years.”

Advice to others in the same boat To other families finding themselves in separate places, either because of COVID restrictions or circumstance, Ruohan says it is never easy, but often the periods of separation are in the course of pursuing something bigger and brighter in the future, and it is important not to lose sight of this.

“Practically, I would advise everyone to make the most of today’s technologies – not just Zoom and FaceTime, but things like online shopping and meal/flower deliveries, where our ability to surprise the kids/spouse is no longer limited by time and space, and one little gesture can mean so much from across the Pacific,” he says. “Be creative, be inventive, and don’t be afraid to push your imagination.

“Emotionally, there will always be times when it feels overwhelming and maybe even at breaking point, but I have personally gotten through it by drawing upon the experience of so many rounds of exams and hardships – which is by viewing any current predicament from the perspective of tomorrow or the final finish line, and realising that no matter how hard things feel now, we will always be there on the other side one day looking back, having surmounted the hurdle. So if we will be there one day – why not be there now.”

In closing, Ruohan expressed sincere gratitude toward his wife and children for supporting him through these years of dental school.

“Currently working six days a week while the family are still abroad, I am loving every minute of this profession and would not have it any other way. I cannot thank my wife enough for nudging me on to this career path and shouldering so many of the family responsibilities for me to walk it, as well as the kids for being my everlasting source of motivation and determination.”

Having spoken to many of his colleagues, Ruohan said that most students have received support from family, partners and friends throughout their time at Dental School, which was instrumental in their successes.

In his capacity as a Past President of the University Dental Students' Society, he would like to acknowledge and extend thanks to all the unsung supporters who have made this career a reality for so many students.

Michael Khoury Endodontist Michael Khoury and his family have been living in Perth since 2007. However, when Michael’s wife, endodontist Rada Haddadin, was offered a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Jordan, and as a consultant endodontist at the university hospital in 2016, Rada and the couple’s two daughters, Laila and Tiana, travelled to the Middle East, while Michael remained in Perth to complete his Doctor of Clinical Dentistry at UWA. The family made the distance between them work as best they could – seeing each other every few months for a couple of weeks and longer during holiday periods. They were able to celebrate every Christmas, Easter and most birthdays and anniversaries together.

COVID strikes Soon after Michael left Jordan at the end of January 2020, Rada discovered she was pregnant, so Michael arranged to go back to Jordan in April to see his family.

However, his flight was cancelled due to the COVID restrictions, which came into place in March. After that, the family was thrown more obstacles preventing them from being reunited.

From my part, travel was not an option due to airport closures and quarantine conditions, plus it was not guaranteed that I would get an approval to return to Perth.

It was very hard on us to accept, especially Rada, that we would not be reunited before giving birth.

“The plan was for Rada and the girls to come back for good to Australia, especially after Rada got a new job at UWA Dental School,” Michael adds. “However, Rada had a complicated pregnancy and therefore she was prohibited from travel upon medical advice. Here, things started to get more complicated, because she contacted the consular of the Australian Embassy in Amman, who was very keen to get her on the first available plane to Perth, but her medical status was not cleared for travel.

“From my part, travel was not an option due to airport closures and quarantine conditions, plus it was not guaranteed that I would get an approval to return to Perth. It was very hard on us to accept, especially Rada, that we would not be reunited before giving birth. She was in tears most of the time and I was here trying to calm her down and reassuring her that everything happens for a reason and that her parents are there for her. The COVID situation there in Jordan was getting worse with time, while here in Perth we were doing well and living a normal life.

“I am a family guy who enjoys and cherishes family time,” he adds. “I was worried about them all the time, being worried about their health was and how they can stay safe there! At the same time, I had to continue what I am doing and focus on finishing my studies. It was very hard to work while being stressed and concerned about the whole situation.”

The family connected via daily video calls (which was challenging with being in different time zones) but the obstacles meant that Michael missed most of Rada’s pregnancy, including the birth of their son, Mark, who arrived in September 2020.

“I was able to be with Rada on FaceTime while she was giving birth in the theatre as it was a caesarean delivery,” Michael recalls. “Her friend was with her and she held the phone during the delivery and took many photos. I was able to see Mark first and watch every single detail of this precious moment. It was very late at night in Perth time, but I was there till I was sure they were OK. I was also talking to my daughters Laila and Tiana, who were at home waiting to hear the news anxiously. They were not allowed to go to the hospital due to COVID restrictions in Jordan. It was a night that I will never forget! I actually submitted my dissertation on that same day while Rada was on her way to the hospital!

“It was harder and harder every day when we had video calls,” he adds. “I wished I could be physically there to help with the baby and have sleepless nights. Having said that, Rada’s parents got COVID a few weeks after she gave birth. This made things quite hard on Rada and I felt even worse for not being there because she was dealing with the baby and everything around alone.”

Immediately after Mark’s birth, the family started the paperwork for Australian citizenship and an Australian passport for

“I was so worried about them travelling under these circumstances, but they had to take the risk and they were very precautious during travel,” Michael says. “I went to the airport hoping to see them from a distance, but the WA Police let them out from a back door, which I couldn’t access.”

“Travelling with three children including a baby is normally challenging so you can imagine how more challenging and stressful it can be during this pandemic,” Rada recalls. “We were happy to arrive, but we did not expect what

Mark, so that Rada and the kids could finally come back to Australia. The process took around seven weeks, and after being apart from Michael for nearly a year, Rada and their children arrived in Perth on December 15, before going straight to hotel quarantine.

was waiting for us. We had to go through lots of check points and very strict procedures at the airport and then we were taken to the hotel by a bus. We had to take all our luggage and belongings with us, and no one was allowed to help us with lifting the bags and so on. This was hard having a baby and a relatively recent

surgery. My younger daughter Tiana held Mark as Laila and I lifted the luggage into the hotel trolley. Finally, we went into the rooms at 11:30pm after a long flight and long wait.”

Rada says quarantine was a unique experience.

Michael cooked healthy dinners for the family every day and dropped meals and supplies from the shops to the hotel. Online school kept Laila and Tiana busy, and Rada says taking care of little Mark made the time pass quicker, but there were times they felt bored and overwhelmed.

We cherish moments we spend together as a family. We make the most of our time and enjoy simple little things.

“I tried to put a smile on my face every day, although I felt deeply sad,” she says, adding that baby Mark’s first Christmas was in quarantine, which was also the family’s first Christmas away from Michael.

“COVID prevented me to be with my wife during the whole period of her pregnancy and the birth of our son, Mark,” Michael says. “I couldn’t feel the first kick and watch my baby growing inside my wife’s tummy. I couldn’t hold Rada’s hand when our son arrived safely into this world. I wasn’t able to hold my son when he was a newborn. It was the most difficult time that we have ever experienced in our life! I missed out on many tiny and big moments that no husband and father would choose to miss. I couldn’t physically support my wife during her pregnancy, but we managed to stay connected emotionally.”

Support from the dental community “The WA dental community was very supportive, especially within the Dental School,” Michael says.

“The school provided us with a support letter to help Rada get her G2Gpass. My friends from the dental community were very helpful and supportive too.”

Advice to others in the same boat “It is very hard to be apart, but you can do this,” Michael says. “Stay connected as much as you can despite the distance... remember it’s only temporary! There is always light at the end of the tunnel.”

“We made a Christmas tree out of paper and decorated the rooms to have some Christmas spirit,” Rada says. “I was holding my tears in front of the kids on Christmas Eve. Michael came to wave for us that evening. We were dressed up for dinner and had a video call with him.

Christmas 2020 was different – never to be forgotten!

“I am really glad that time is part of the past now,” she adds. “However, when I reflect on that time, I can see some positive things out of it. We spent more quality time together as I had no other distractions.

We were creative with the things we did, and we connected with lots of family and friends. We became more appreciative of the things we have. We cherish moments we spend together as a family. We make the most of our time and enjoy simple little things. It is a blessing to be together after everything we went through last year.”

Queen’s Birthday

Honours We were thrilled that three members of the WA dental community were recognised for their hard work, being named on the Queen’s Birthday 2021 Honours List.

Ramesh Balasubramaniam Associate Professor Ramesh Balasubramaniam was honoured with a Medal (OAM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for service to dentistry.

“I was quite surprised and very humbled,” Ramesh says of receiving the award. “It was not expected, and I am very grateful.”

When asked about contributions to the profession that he is most proud, the Principal of Perth Oral Medicine and Dental Sleep Centre and Associate Professor at the UWA Dental School says a standout for him was in 2009 when he, along with Dr David Booth and

Ramesh feels the other big contribution to the field he has made has been his involvement in teaching and training. “I think the face of oral medicine has changed,” he explains. “I believe that our dental and medical colleagues understand the field of oral medicine and know what we do and that has been a good achievement globally for all of us as oral medicine specialists”.

Through this meeting we were able to speak to Ms Roxon on the need for oral medicine to be recognised as a speciality in Western Australia.

Associate Professor Agnieszka Frydrych, met with then Federal Health Minister, Nicola Roxon. “Through this meeting we were able to speak to Ms Roxon on the need for oral medicine to be recognised as a speciality in Western Australia,” he recalls.

“Thankfully, at the time, Dr John Owen AM was the President of the Dental Board of Western Australia.

When it came to his table, he was supportive as well.

That is how oral medicine became recognised as a speciality in Western Australia. That was one of the most exciting moments.”

“I am also proud of co-authoring and co-editing Contemporary Oral Medicine, which is the number-oneselling textbook in oral medicine in the world now.”

Ramesh adds he is grateful for the support he has received. “I don’t think these sorts of things could be achieved without the support of my colleagues,” he says. “I have been well supported by ADAWA, I have been well supported by past and present Heads of School at UWA Dental School, and of course, my family, who are very proud but have sacrificed much of our time for my work.”

Albert Tan Adjunct Professor Albert Tan was awarded a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to tertiary dental education, and to periodontics.

“It was totally unexpected when I received an email from the ‘Official Secretary to the Governor-General’ a couple of months ago to say that I had been nominated for an Order of Australia,” Albert says. “It was surreal, but at the same time a great honour to be even nominated and considered. To me, this is an award that ‘other people get’, and it took a while to sink in.”

His service to tertiary education is well-known to his many students, with Albert’s long involvement with the UWA Dental School giving him the opportunity to learn and contribute as a clinician, teacher, researcher, supervisor, examiner, collaborator and mentor.

“Having been the beneficiary of many wonderful teachers and mentors, I was proud to be in a position to be able to give back,” he says, “As much as I have always maintained a keen interest in academia and hospital affiliation (Perth Children’s Hospital), my main livelihood has been derived as a specialist private practitioner. Hence, I hope that my experience in all sectors over a long period has also served to give students some guidance and encouragement in the knowledge that their careers can be varied, interesting and rewarding. For the many generations of dentists

I have taught, I would be proud to think that my influence may have been an impetus for their learning and aspirations.”

Albert has also been an advocate of Continuing Professional Education, and for 16 years was part of the University Continuing Dental Education Committee (UCDEC), which he also chaired for six years.

“Needless to say, my other proud associations are with my specialty (Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists, ANZAP) and my hospital affiliation with Perth Children’s Hospital,” he adds. “I am a Foundation Member of ANZAP and have served in almost every capacity with the honour of Life Membership in 2017 – again so proud of the great camaraderie with periodontists from every state and NZ. Last but not least, working with children with dento-facial anomalies at PCH is such a privilege, especially with a multi-disciplinary team of dedicated dental and medical specialists. And after more than 40 years, I still love going there.”

Jan Owen Jan was awarded a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the Indigenous community through dental health initiatives.

“I am very proud and humbled that our work and that of all our KDT volunteers with and for our Kimberley indigenous peoples has been recognised in this way,” Jan says.

Jan, who co-founded the Kimberley Dental Team in 2009 alongside husband Dr John Owen, says it is very rewarding that they are able to take a dental service to people who would otherwise not have easy access to dental care and education.

“I am very proud of all aspects of our program and would struggle to pinpoint any one part,” she adds.

“Three standouts are: 1. That aboriginal people feel safe and respected by our teams and look forward to our visits 2. That families and children now have access to toothbrushing supplies and regular school brushing which is making a huge difference to their dental and general health.

3. That dental and auxiliary volunteers including students enjoy being involved in KDT.”

Dental Health Week 2021

Keep your smile for life

The biggest week on the dental calendar is back from August 2-8. For 2021, Dental Health Week’s campaign is "Keep your smile for life" “This campaign is aiming to highlight that it should not be an expectation that teeth need to be removed because of tooth decay or gum disease,” says Dr Fleur Creeper, committee member of the ADA Oral Health Committee and the ADAWA Oral Health Committee. “Dental disease is almost entirely preventable, and Australians should expect and aim to keep their teeth for life. Simple, relatively inexpensive daily home care can help people to reach this goal. People do not expect to lose their arm, so why should we expect to lose teeth?”

As tempting as it is to assume that everyone is practising good oral health, the reality is somewhat different: • 75% adults rarely or never floss or clean between their teeth.

• 1 in 5 adults brush only once per day.

• 39% of parents report their children drink 2 - 5 soft drinks per week.

• 2 in 3 adults usually visit the dentist for a problem rather than a regular check-up.

• 47% of adults (18+ years) are consuming too much sugar.

Vale John Mathieson When Dr John Mathieson passed away in April, the WA dental community lost a well-loved and respected member.

A good friend, respected practitioner and talented man – Dr John Mathieson was a loved member of the WA dental community. John’s sister, Carol Bailey, gave the following insight into his childhood and teenage years:

“Named after his father (who finished his career as Commonwealth Director of Health for WA), John was born on February 17, 1940, in Perth to his mother Madeline Mary Mathieson (née Clark). His only sibling, Carol, was born two and a half years later. Childhood years were spent in Watson’s Bay and later Canberra.

With a population at that stage of just 28,000, Canberra was fairly undeveloped, lots of empty paddocks, open drains/sewers visible; a good place for a young lad who relished the outdoors and could roam on his bike with his mates. And there were plenty of attractions to entice his friends – bow and arrows, spears, 22-rifle, even a 9-foot spear his father had brought back from New Guinea.

It was during John’s university years that he met his wife Lyn on a blind date, and their subsequent engagement was noted in the Matrix of John’s graduating year:

“Teenage years saw John in London, where his father had been transferred as Chief Medical Office of Australia House. Exciting times, travelling to England by ship in 1954 and seeing the wider world, the excitement of London so soon after the Coronation, and then school trips to Belgium and Rome.

He worked in conjunction with nuns in the south-west, who would run into a family down on their luck.

“Freud would love him for the one loves guns and the other knows why. He claims it’s a Robin Hood complex, and a bent for pest control. This quick on-the-draw gent should have no trouble in exodontia. He has a slim, svelte female friend, with a diamond bedecked left hand. On important occasions, he takes his spurs off, but leaves his boots on.”

After finishing at Aquinas, John chose to study dentistry and formed solid friendships that lasted a lifetime.

John was also involved in setting up the South West Dental Convocation, an education and social group for dentists in the south-west, in 1972. “Bunbury is a

long way from Perth, so a group of local dentists got together, and we would get lecturers down here to give us a talk and that sort of thing,” Cliff recalls.

As well as being a respected practitioner, outside of dentistry, John was an accomplished shooter. A longtime member of the Bunbury Pistol Club, John was the first WA team member to win gold at an Australian Nationals when he won the Rapid Fire event in 1969.

He held the Western Australian State Record for Pistol Shooting in the Rapid Fire event for some years with a score of 586 (out of a possible 600 points).Some of his shooting exploits also included: • An Australian Team Member 1970 Shotgun Shooting Team in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. • An Australian Team Member 1974 Pistol Shooting Team in Bern-Thun, Switzerland.

• Team Member in various Western Australian State Shotgun shooting teams.

• Team Member in various Western Australian State Pistol shooting teams.

• Western Australian Pistol Shooting State Coach in various years.

He was involved over a number of years in Safe Gun Handling courses at a local high school in Bunbury during the 1980s, facilitating the students to experience shooting a variety of rifles and shotguns in a controlled and fun environment.

He was a recipient of Western Australian, Southwest Sports Star of the Year Award. He was recipient of a national award for his contribution to the sport of shooting in Australia. “He was always interested in guns and liked making things go bang,” Cliff laughs.

He went on many memorable fishing trips with his dental colleagues and friends. “One time we were camping north of Carnarvon, and it was my job to look after the little generator and it wasn’t behaving,” Cliff says. “I was getting very cross and in his quiet, docile tones, John said: ‘Did you turn the petrol on?’ Of course, that was very cheeky, and I gave him a mouthful of abuse, but he was right,” Cliff laughs.

John’s tendency to remain cool, calm and collected was apparent during various other fishing trips.

“Like others on a fishing trip to Peron Station, Matho failed to heed King Canute’s warning and arrived back after fishing on the first day to find the camp afloat,” recalls Rob Bower. “Unlike the rest, John’s solution was to sit in a deck chair with water up to his ankles and have a civilised scotch before heading to higher ground. We immediately saw the wisdom in his example and joined him.”

It is clear John will be missed by many. John passed away in April, aged 81 years. Sympathies to his wife Lyn, children Scott, Craig and Stacey and families.

Fishing was also a passion for John. “Once he threw a line in the water, he just took it on hand over first,” Cliff recalls. “He tried every sort of fishing you could think of – from black bream fishing to catching marlin. He knew rods and reels and intricate details about fishing lines – he was a real details man.”

Dr Keith Doonan In the lead-up to his CPD course in September, we caught up with the entertaining Dr Keith Doonan.

As a graduate of the Australian Performing Arts Conservatory, it’s little wonder Dr Keith Doonan is as entertaining as he is skilled at presenting.

“I just look attendees in the eyes, so they feel too intimated to fall asleep,” he jokes, when asked how he keeps attendees engaged. “Doing a simple thing like greeting people individually at the start of the lecture can change the whole dynamic of the day. It surprises me how many people come up at the end of the lecture and say, ‘That’s the first lecture I have not fallen asleep in’."

Keith may be a talented actor, performer and amateur magician, but he is a skilled implant dentist, first and foremost. He was encouraged to pursue a dental career by his mother, who steered him towards the profession at just five years’ old.

“Attendees can expect to see real-life problems and practical solutions to common problems,” Keith says.

“They will get an understanding of where things can go wrong, and we look at the psychology of decision making and unconscious incompetence.”

Keith says understanding authority gradient is also an important aspect to avoid problems.

In dentistry, to avoid problems, you need to include your team and give them a little bit of responsibility. “(For example) in a team, you have a surgeon in charge, then you might have two or three people around him who aren’t as qualified, but they still know what’s going on,” he explains. “The surgeon is really clever, and he knows how to cut a leg off. Everyone around him doesn’t know how to do that, but they know he’s cutting the wrong leg off … yet they don’t say anything.

“In dentistry, to avoid problems, you need to include your team and give them a little bit of responsibility.

Encourage them to speak up whenever they think something is not quite right.”

According to Keith, one of the most common challenges dentists face in implant dentistry is finding suitable patients.

“The biggest challenge is saying no to people when they’re not suitable,” he explains. “Often people aren’t suitable for an implant, but we still go ahead, and that’s where we get the most problems. The simplest way of improving your implant success rate is to start saying no to people.”

As a general practitioner, Keith’s CPD courses are practical and relatable. “I’m not a specialist – I’m a general practitioner with a Masters in Prosthodontics and I work in a very busy dental practice,” he explains.

“If you’re a specialist, there’s a filter,” he adds.

“Specialists do not see everyone – they see speciallyselected patients who are usually wealthier and automatically more likely to be suitable for implants.

For a general dentist, they must filter out all those people who are not suitable.”

What’s coming up next for Keith? He says he would like to run more hand-on courses, and away from work, spend more time making short comedy films.

I enjoy sports, such as paragliding.

I play soccer in a league, so that involves a lot of training.

Is there anything people might be surprised to learn about you?

I trained as an actor and went through years of acting school. I was an extra in a film years and years ago but generally I have done amateur theatre productions around the place.

Dental implants are prevalent in modern dental practice. A high proportion of dental implants are successful, however reported numbers of implant failures are rising. There are many reasons why implant complications or failures do occur. This can be frustrating for the clinician and involve further cost and additional procedures for the patient.

Dr Keith Doonan qualified in 1993 from the Royal London Hospital Dental School.

He received his Masters in Prosthodontics in 2006 from King’s College London. He is a Fellow of the RACDS and a member of Dental Protection’s education faculty.

He is a graduate from the Australian Performing Arts Conservatory in Brisbane and uses these skills to create a unique, interactive and engaging presentation style. He is also a terrible amateur magician and stand-up comic. He has lectured widely since 2006 on implants, prosthodontics and communication skills.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

This hands-on course will focus on the full coverage tooth restoration. It will focus on the premise that attendees should know how to prepare these preparations but may enjoy some guidance from experienced prosthodontists who can look over shoulders and offer some guidance. A variety of full coverage crowns will be covered with feedback using digital tools. Along with taking a traditional impression, attendees will scan a preparation, which will be 3D printed and a milled crown fabricated; this will be forwarded to the attendee.

Dr Loh is a senior lecturer in restorative dentistry at the UWA Dental School where he is responsible for teaching prosthodontics and restorative dentistry to dental students and specialists in training. Dr Loh has been involved in continuing education and postgraduate teaching and assessments nationally and internationally. He is a prosthodontist at OHCWA and in a specialist private practice in West Perth.

Employee Leave Entitlements A guide to what you must know Employee leave entitlements can often be tricky for practices to navigate. It is critical that employers understand employee leave entitlements, as disputes about leave can damage employment relationships and reduce productivity. A well-drafted leave policy is an effective way for a practice to communicate its expectations to employees and is undoubtedly helpful to resolve any disputes that may arise over leave entitlements.

This guide will cover the different types of leave accessible to National System employees, and what should be included in a leave policy and how it can be used to manage employee leave entitlements.

The Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) (the Act) and the National Employment Standards (NES).

The Act is the foundation of Australian workplace relations and includes the NES. The NES represent the minimum entitlements that must be provided to all employees. Among others, these include several leave entitlements: • Parental leave and related entitlements • Annual leave • Personal/carer’s leave, compassionate leave and unpaid family and domestic violence leave

• Community-service leave • Long service leave • Public holidays

This guide will focus on annual leave and personal/carer’s leave as these are the most accessed leave entitlements.

Annual leave

These include:

For each year of service, employees, other than casuals, are entitled to accrue four weeks of paid annual leave. Shift workers are entitled to five weeks of paid annual leave per year. The entitlement to paid annual leave accrues progressively according to the employee’s ordinary hours of work, and accumulates from year to year.

ANNUAL LEAVE LOADING

Importantly, part-time employees accrue annual leave on a pro-rata basis. An example of this is an employee who works 20 hours per week for a year. In one year, the employee will accumulate 80 hours of annual leave (the equivalent of four weeks work for her).

Paid annual leave may be taken at a time agreed between an employee and their employer. This means that employees cannot simply take leave at any time they choose, however, practices should note that an employer must not unreasonably refuse to agree to a request by the employee to take paid annual leave.

When an employee takes a period of paid annual leave, the employer must pay the employee at the employee’s base rate of pay for the employee’s ordinary hours of work in the period.

Annual leave entitlements are also payable upon termination, meaning that if, when employment ends, the employee has annual leave accrued but not taken, the practice is required to pay it out.

Annual leave under the Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 (HPSS) Many employees within dental practices are covered by the HPSS. Additional provisions relating to annual leave apply to employees that are covered by the HPSS.

In addition to their ordinary pay, an employee who is not a shift worker will be paid an annual leave loading of 17.5% of their minimum rate of pay. For employees receiving above-award payments, the employee is entitled to receive the higher rate while on a period of paid annual leave.

ANNUAL LEAVE IN ADVANCE An employer and employee may agree in writing to the employee taking a period of paid annual leave before the employee has accrued an entitlement to the leave.

An agreement must be signed and state the amount of leave to be taken in advance and the date on which leave is to commence.

If the employment relationship ends and the employee has not accrued back the leave taken in advance – their leave balance is still “negative” – the employer may deduct from any money due to the employee on termination an amount equivalent to the value of leave paid in advance minus leave they have accrued since the leave in advance was taken.

CLOSE DOWN PERIODS When an employer temporarily closes a dental practice, an employee may be directed to take paid annual leave during part or all of this period provided such direction is reasonable.

CASHING OUT ANNUAL LEAVE By agreement in writing, employers and employee covered by the HPSS can cash out annual leave provided that; • The payment is not less than what the employee would have received if they had taken the leave at the time the payment is made; • The agreement does not result in the employee’s remaining accrued entitlement to paid annual leave being less than four weeks; and • The maximum amount of paid annual leave that be cashed out in any period of 12 months is two weeks. adawa.com.au

EXCESSIVE LEAVE ACCRUALS If an employee has accrued more than eight weeks paid annual leave it is considered an excessive leave accrual. The HPSS provides that an employer may direct the employee in writing to take a period of paid annual leave provided that; • the employee’s remaining accrued entitlement to paid annual leave cannot be less than six weeks; • the employee cannot be required to take a period of paid annual leave of less than one week; and • the period of paid annual leave cannot begin less than eight weeks, or more than 12 months, after the direction to take leave is given.

Before a direction is made, however, practices must attempt to reach genuine agreement as to when the leave will be taken.

PERSONAL/CARER’S LEAVE Casual employees are not entitled to paid personal/ carers’ leave. Full-time employees accrue 10 days of paid personal leave for each year of service and part-time employees receive a prorata entitlement depending on their ordinary hours of work. Personal/carer's leave can be taken at any time and in any amount.

Personal/carer’s leave can be taken by an employee: • because they are not fit for work because of a personal illness or injury affecting the employee: or • to provide care or support to an immediate family member or member of their household, who requires care or support because of a personal illness, injury or an unexpected emergency.

The Act requires that an employee must notify their employer if they taking personal/carer’s leave or compassionate leave as soon as practicable (which may be after the leave has started) and they must advise their employer of the period, or expected period, of the leave.

Practices can require employees provide evidence to satisfy a reasonable person that the leave is being taken for a valid reason.

Taking personal/carer’s leave is a workplace right, which means a practice cannot take adverse action, such as terminating the employee or giving them a warning for taking the leave.

COMPASSIONATE LEAVE All employees (except casuals) are entitled to take two days’ of paid compassionate leave for each occasion when a member of the employee’s immediate family or a member of the employee’s household: • contracts or develops a personal illness that poses a serious threat to his or her life; or • sustains a personal injury that poses a serious threat to his or her life; or • dies.

Compassionate leave can be taken either as a single continuous two-day period, two separate periods of one day each or any separate periods by agreement.

Leave Policies – What to include?

A leave policy is a useful tool to manage leave in your practice as it clearly communicates to employees what their leave entitlements are, and what processes employees need to follow when accessing leave.

This can include outlining that an employee is required to provide a certain amount of notice of their intention to take a period of annual leave, and the way in which they need to request it. For example, the practice may utilise a leave request form, or require the employee to email the practice owner and manager.

In addition, the policy can specify certain periods in which employees cannot apply for leave, such as busy periods around Christmas and school holidays.

The policy should also prescribe how the practice expects employees to call in sick for work. The practice may require employees to call, rather than text, or send an email instead. Having a policy on this ensures that everyone is on the same page.

It is also recommended to specify what happens if the employee breaches the requirements, which may include disciplinary action. For example, if an employee does not apply for leave in accordance with the Policy, or takes leave without approval, they may be subject to a disciplinary process.

Volunteering heroes Oceanic Dental Laboratories The volunteers of Healing Smiles work tirelessly to help women who are survivors of domestic abuse access pro-bono dental treatment in order to improve their oral health, and rehabilitate their smiles. But it would not be possible without generous sponsors, such as Oceanic Dental Laboratories.

As proud sponsors of the Australian Dental Health Foundation, Oceanic Dental Laboratories are well known within WA dental circles for their generosity. The Healing Smiles team was thrilled when Oceanic also decided to sponsor their cases late last year.

The Oceanic Dental team committed to donating $7,000 worth of dental laboratory support for Healing Smiles’ patients.

Clinical coordinator of Healing Smiles, Dr Jacinta Vu, says the $7,000 worth of dental laboratory support will be able to help between 25 to 40 patients, depending on the treatment they require.

“Without the generosity of Oceanic Dental, we would have to approach sponsors for money or approach other laboratories,” she says. “We and the patients of Healing Smiles are incredibly grateful for Oceanic Dental’s support. They are very accommodating to our requests and very easy to get in touch with.”

“At times, it’s easy to get caught up in what we’re doing day-to-day,” says Oceanic Dental Laboratories’ Michael Moran. “As a dental laboratory, we rarely are

involved in the patient experience outside of looking at dental impressions.

“The team at Healing Smiles do work that helps remind us of what it means to smile, and to be grateful to have one.

Smiling connects people and helps people in more ways than most people realise; for example, finding work is easier with a smile.

Scam Alert:

False bills & dodgy business listings In 2019 alone, Australia lost around $643 million dollars to scammers. False billing was the third most common type of scam, costing individuals and businesses $10.1 million dollars.

False billing scams insist that invoices must be paid for services or supplies that were never ordered or provided. Dental practices should be on alert for these types of scams, especially those that concern purported business listings. Legitimate sounding companies have been cold calling small businesses and through misleading conduct require them to pay for worthless listings at a steep price. Here is what you need to know to protect your dental practice.

Misleading and deceptive conduct Under section 18 of the Australian Consumer Law, an individual in trade or commerce cannot engage in conduct that is misleading or deceptive or likely to mislead and deceive. Conduct will be misleading or deceptive if it is capable of inducing error.

Business listing scammers make statements that imply your business has previously had a listing or has a current listing that needs to be renewed with the company. In implying that your dental practice has previously had dealings with the company, they imply that there is an existing legal relationship.

This has been found in Federal Court proceedings commenced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to be misleading and deceptive conduct.

Engagement Cold calls from a business listing company you have never heard of “checking” your current advertisement or renewing a previously held advertisement.

Companies that require your dental practice to sign an agreement or pay an invoice as soon as possible otherwise your listing will be cancelled.

Business listing The business listing looks like it has been copied and pasted from another listing or your own website.

The business listing has a blurry logo and looks unprofessional.

Contractual terms The description of the services provided by the business listing company is vague or uncertain.

The terms and conditions provide for automatic renewals if no contact is made with the business listing company prior to expiry of the advertisement.

What can I do to protect myself from false billing and business listing scams?

Get proof of the directory listing before any invoice is paid and never pay for a listing that was not authorised.

Keep written records of any authorisations for business listings.

Check the ACCC website to see if the business listing company has had any action taken against it.

If you have been the victim of a false billing scam report it to the ACCC and contact the Australian Dental Association who can help you seek legal advice if required. It can be difficult to retrieve payment for false billing especially as scammers become more sophisticated in their schemes, however it may be possible to stop harassment for the payment of invoices.

Dentistry has often enjoyed the benefits of being a tight-knit community. Many of us know each other, or know of each other, whether it be through dental school, through CPD, dental functions, or through associations such as ADAWA. This especially holds true when it comes to patient care and the relationships formed between dentists, other oral health care professionals and specialists.

Dentists choosing to refer a patient to another colleague should always be afforded respect. After all, the referring dentist and patient always have a choice, and will ultimately choose, in their mind, “the best” specialist in Western Australia for this patient, to refer to. This characterisation of “the best” is rightfully based on mutual respect, trust, accessibility and ultimately, likability.

We have all been there. That is, when a case did not go to plan; whether it be a suboptimal result or a “stuff up” that requires specialist assessment and “fixing”.

Regardless, when the patient is referred, the referrer deserves the benefit of the doubt and respect. With a

There have unfortunately been a few instances of dental colleagues complaining that their specialist colleague has “dissed” their treatment plan to their patient. It should be noted though, that the Dental Board of Australia states that dentists (general and specialist) are entitled to carry out all aspects of dental care, even if it falls within the scope of dental specialist practice, as long as the dentist believes they have had adequate training and/or experience to carry out the procedure. Of course, dentists (general and specialist) have a duty of care to do the best for their patients. That means, in some circumstances, we will be faced with the decision to acknowledge our limitation (that we don’t know everything, and that we can’t know everything) and hence have to refer our patients to another dentist (general or specialist) to fulfill the patient’s dental needs.

As anticipated, the person to whom the patient has been referred will assess the patient, establish the diagnosis, and formulate the treatment plan. This treatment plan must then be discussed with the patient. In most instances, the patient is grateful for being taken care of by a trusted and recommended professional. Unfortunately, on occasion, the patient is left with the impression that the referring dentist has “stuffed-up”. This may arise from the patient simply misinterpreting the specialist. Having an open conversation with the person to whom you have referred to can often clarify any confusion and resolve any ill-feeling. Unfortunately, there may be some

good degree of certainty, the vast majority of dentists do not go to work with a plan to choose the wrong shade, place the implant into the inferior alveolar nerve canal, miss the oral cancer or lock the TMJ. So, what is the best course of action in these circumstances? It is prudent that the specialist obtains all the necessary information about the case, including a conversation with the referring dentist if required. Of course, with the patient’s best interest front and centre, a speedy resolution is ideal. This is where ADAWA and your indemnity is especially invaluable. What is not ideal is the specialist “dogging” the treatment plan and further infuriating the patient. From a patient point of view, being angry hampers healing.

So, what does a referrer do if they hear that their specialist who they considered “the best” for this patient is apparently “dissing” them to the patient?

Give the specialist a call and seek clarification on what truly occurred. Most cases, it is the result of miscommunication and misunderstanding that has spiraled out of control. A subsequent discussion between the specialist and/or dentist with the patient, almost always results in a speedy resolution. In rare cases, one might face a specialist who admits that they have criticised the dentist’s treatment plan. In these instances, the referring dentist still deserves open communication, respect, and may likely be best served using a different specialist in the future; ideally one who is more respectful.

Timor-Leste Dental Program VOLUNTEERING SPOTLIGHT

Dr Blanche Tsetong is the program coordinator for the Timor-Leste Dental Program, the biggest dental program in Timor-Leste.

“It has a great mixture of prevention and treatment,” she says. “We are a welfare program, in that we provide free dental treatment, but we are equally a development program; we mentor and support Timorese dental clinicians and we are sponsoring a Timorese dental student in Fiji Uni. So, we are future-focused without losing sight of the present reality.”

The Timor-Leste Dental Program maintains a base in Maubara (a rural centre 60km from Dili), which runs a general fixed clinic, as well as a school dental program, taken care of by permanent Timorese staff members.

It has enriched my life and the lives of the many people who have volunteered with us.

“Our volunteers work in our outreach clinics – we cover the greatest area of TL – and live in the villages that they work in, eat local food and work with local people,” she says. “They get to see great swathes of the countryside and experience real local culture. It’s a rewarding, if not entirely

comfortable, experience. It has enriched my life and the lives of the many people who have volunteered with us.”

In non-COVID years, five dental teams are sent to Timor-Leste annually. Although trips are paused at the moment, dentists can register their interest for when trips resume, and can volunteer in other ways in the meantime.

“It is very difficult to plan at the moment,” Blanche explains. “The TLDP is looking for clinical volunteers that are keen – not just for now when they will almost certainly not be called to help – but for the next year or two.

“There is also a need for volunteers who have skills in other areas,” Blanche adds. “Clinical volunteers are important, but since our inception, it’s been the same dentists who volunteer as clinicians who have also been running the backend of this program. We are simply not that great at doing those other jobs. We need help with fundraising, with social media, with IT. Even if these are only hobbies, if they have some real skill, we would love help with all of that.”

Thinking about volunteering? WA dentist and Timor-Leste Dental Program volunteer Dr John Moran says if you are interested in volunteer dentistry, then East Timor is a wonderful place to visit. “Not only is the geography of the area stunning, the locals are so friendly and appreciative of the services we provide,” he says.

“I have been volunteering with the TLDP as dentist, then a team-leader, since 2006,” Blanche adds. “I also took on the program coordinator role in 2012. Last year was the first year I have missed going to TL and that was all due to Covid. Ninety-five per cent of our volunteers return for multiple trips, which I think says a lot about how much they enjoy volunteering with us.”

Cowden’s disease is a rare, autosomal dominant hereditary, multi-system disease involving hamartomatous overgrowth of tissues of all three embryonic origins. It is thought to be due to mutations of the tumour suppressor gene PTEN located at chromosome 10q22-23 leading to inhibition of the p13k/ Akt signalling pathway and mTOR activation. It is characterized by the presence of mucocutaneous lesions, characteristically and diagnostically hamartomatous.

Patients have increased risks of malignant neoplasias such as thyroid and breast cancer, and require close monitoring by their medical specialists.

The differential diagnosis includes tuberous sclerosis, some types of multiple endocrine neoplasia, ByarsJurkiewicz syndrome, Gardner’s syndrome, lipoid proteinosis, multifocal epithelial hyperplasia and orofacial granulomatosis.

As the patient has been diagnosed with Cowden’s disease by her endocrinologist, no further oral treatment is required.

Making a di≠erence T HE D E N T ISTS H E L PIN G TO RE B U IL D SMI LE S The Rebuilding Smiles program supports those who have experienced domestic and family violence, referred by domestic violence support agencies. The Australian Dental Health Foundation coordinates volunteer dentists to provide pro bono dental treatment for these patients – and they’re always looking for more dentists to make a difference.

Dr Aron Lazaridis is only two years out of Dental School, but already determined to make a difference by giving back through the Australian Dental Health Foundation’s Rebuilding Smiles Program.

It was looking into how to help a pro bono case that Aron and the team at Coolamon Dental in Ellenbrook came across the Rebuilding Smiles program. “We made dentures for the patient but due to her jaw not really lending itself to dentures, the only real option we had was implants,” Aron says. “I spoke to the principal dentist here and Serena, our practice manager, about what we could do for this patient, and Serena found the Rebuilding Smiles program and informed me about it. We got the approval and through the program we managed to help the patient.”

The practice has now taken on a second Rebuilding Smiles patient. “We have done a treatment plan and I have done all her extractions,” Aron says. “My colleague Gen (Dr Genevieve Day) is going to be doing all of the restorative dentistry and then the patient will come back to me for implants.”

Aron says so far, he has found taking part in the Rebuilding Smiles program very rewarding. “It is giving these patients exactly what they need and what they can’t afford,” he says. “The look on their faces when you are guaranteeing them the best treatment and the best outcomes for things that they have been self-conscious about, such as trying to get a job, and eating and speaking, is really satisfying.”

And although the two patients are still undergoing treatment, Aron says he is already seeing the

difference the treatment is making for the patients involved.

“One of the patients is getting more employment,” he says. “It is not the best thing to think about people not being able to get employment because of their teeth, but the fact it has allowed her to be more confident and get a full-time job is really powerful. She always shakes my hand when she comes to the practice and says thank you for making a difference.

“The other patient has only been to the practice twice so far. When we did the consult, the patient’s carer came in as well and we all discussed it together. Having her carer there as well made it easier to explain things and for the patient to reciprocate. It felt like a really warm space for them to be in.”

Aron says the communication has sometimes been challenging to ensure everyone is on the same wavelength, which is why having a carer attend has been so helpful. For one of the patients, due to juggling work, kids and not having a stable living situation, it has sometimes been difficult to arrange for her to routinely come in for appointments. However, he says their practice has been accommodating and both patients have been very obliging.

Aron says volunteering in the program has been a satisfying experience. “I go home, and I tell my family about what I am doing and who we are doing it for, and they are really proud. To see their reaction is lifting.

To be able to use your skills to benefit others who really need it is refreshing.

“It is also rewarding that you can do everything that is required for the patient without worrying about the financial aspect,” he adds. “We also know as practitioners that things can change, and we can have a tooth that changes three or four times, treatmentplan wise – but we have the flexibility that can accommodate for those changes as well.

“To be able to use your skills to benefit others who really need it is refreshing – it is a different type of reward system that you get. I think that if you are privileged enough to be in this position and this profession, then you have to give back and help when you can.”

As well as being personally satisfying, Aron says the experience has helped make him a better practitioner.

“Clinically, it has been a great learning experience, but also personally and ethically. I also feel like my communication has improved. Volunteering definitely has its benefits as a well-rounded practitioner.”

Principal dentist and practice owner Dr Kent Tan encourages other practices to sign up to the Rebuilding Smiles program.

Funding is available to reimburse approved expenses incurred by the practice, such as dentures, crown and bridge or the placement of implants, at the completion of the case.

Generosity at St Pat's

The team at 123 Dental recently hosted their first Australian Dental Health Foundation Dental Rescue Day.

St Pat’s recently enjoyed a visit from Nichola Meehan, Regional Operations Manager at Henry Schein. The dental clinic at St Pat’s, which provides pro bono treatment to homeless people, is run by volunteer dentists from the Australian Dental Health Foundation.

Kimberley Dental Team trip The May Kimberley Dental Team trip was a great success. Over three weeks, 18 volunteers (plus John and Jan Owen) visited Halls Creek, Riger Soak, Yiyili, Warmun, Frog Hollow, Red Hill, Billiluna, Balgo and Mulan – providing 488 people with dental care and education over 498 appointments. “Not only were the people delighted to see us after missing the service in 2020 due to Covid, but the staff at all clinics and schools were exceptionally welcoming and helpful,” says Jan Owen.

Another strong field of 28 keen golfers hit the fairways of the beautiful Hartfield Golf Club. A stunning autumn day provided ideal conditions for golf. The manicured, fast greens and tight fairways proved a challenge for most. Not so Jane McCarthy, who continued her stellar early season form to street the field with 38 stableford points, winning the day from Dean Martin in second place on 34 points and Kris Thyer third on a countback.

We enjoyed the company of several players who rejoined the group after an extended absence, notably Ben Campbell and Phil Robson. It was pleasing to see our long-term sponsors Brad Potter from The Health Linc and David Owen from Swan Valley Dental Laboratory return to the course.

Our major sponsor for the day was Health Practice Brokers. HPB principal Garry Bishop took the opportunity to address the group, providing an overview of HPB’s business facilitating the sale of dental practices. Garry was joined at the post game presentation by his colleague Andrew Maurice.
