DR AMIT GURBUXANI ADAWA PRESIDENT

As WA borders have opened and COVID-19 community transmission has risen from high to very high, our members have been talking of very little else.

Understandably, you’ve had many questions, which we’ve tried hard to answer at ADAWA. Our aim has been to collate, summarise and distribute information as quickly as possible to help members and their staff keep practising with minimal disruption.

Rest assured, we at ADAWA have been proactive during this turbulent time, as we endeavour to keep you updated in a timely manner.

Having dentists on the list of critical healthcare workers from the start has been very positive for our members – unlike some of our eastern-states counterparts last year, where dentists were not on the list during the peak. ADAWA will continue to advocate for our community and members.

Working on behalf of our members and in collaboration with the AMA and AMARE, we have sourced a significant stock of N95 masks from HELP-it and 3M and provided the list of resources for fit testing on our website, which should help members and their dental team avoid being classified as a close contact under the existing Government rules.

COUNCIL AND EXECUTIVE UPDATE In other news, we welcome Dr Jenny Ball and Dr Gwen Chin to our executive team.

Council has since upskilled with the AICD (Australian Institute for Company Directors) for boardroom responsibilities. This has allowed us to critique our responsibility and future direction as a board. The ADAWA council also had a strategy day, which was followed by a teambuilding event. This was a very productive day and was beneficial and enjoyed by all involved.

We’ll continue to work as a team for the betterment of ADAWA, to ensure we navigate Western Australia’s COVID-19 outbreak and any future obstacles together.

HEALTHY EATING AT WORK

ANIKA’S TOP TIPS FOR BUSY PROFESSIONALS:

Dr Anika Rouf, an Accredited Practising Dietitian and spokesperson for Dietitians Australia, says eating healthy at work can be tricky and takes some effort.

Put some time into preparing meals and snacks on a Sunday or on the night before work, this means you will have food on hand that’s ready to eat during the week.

“But,” she adds, “it can put us in a better state mentally – boosting memory, concentration, and dodging that midafternoon dip in energy. So, make eating well a priority, and your mind and body will thank you for it.

For those who are time poor and don’t have a lot of time to go shopping, frozen fruits and vegetables can be a great way to always have some produce on hand.

Dr Anika Rouf says it’s important for healthcare workers to look after their health so they feel their best and continue to provide support to others. “Healthy eating should be seen as a form self-care – we should be looking to put our own oxygen mask on first before we help others,” she says. “Healthcare workers have faced and continue to face high levels of stress and workload during COVID-19 and studies suggest significant levels of self-reported anxiety, depression and even symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.”

“My top tips would be to get your colleagues involved to make it fun (just as you’d want to involve your family members at home),” she says. “Encourage your workplace to get on board with healthy snacks. Rather than having biscuits provided in the tearoom or during meetings, try having a fresh fruit and veggie platter, which is a more nutritious choice and likely to leave you feeling healthier and with better concentration levels.

“You can keep sliced veggies (carrot, capsicum, cucumber, and celery) in the fridge and use dips like tzatziki or hummus. This way you can keep yourself fuelled throughout your busy workday and limit the trips you take to the local café or food court.

“Another way to eat healthy would be to bring your own lunch as this puts you in control of the ingredients and portion size,” she adds. “Store-bought sandwiches, salads and pastas are often made with kilojoule-laden sauces, dressings and spreads, which can be higher in salt and fat than we realise. Cooking at home also helps you reduce salt, saturated fat and sugar. We are also able to control how much we serve on our plate.”

Frozen fruit and veg are snap frozen, and their vitamins and minerals are preserved, so the quality is the same as when they were harvested.

Leftovers are your best friend – prepare a little extra of your evening meal, and portion out into takeaway containers for lunch the following day.

Cook bulk servings of staples like rice, wholegrain pasta, and roast vegies like sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, eggplant and zucchini. These can be thrown together with a few other ingredients (salad leaves, nuts, feta cheese, olive oil) and make an easy lunch.

Keep ingredients in the fridge at work for easy sandwiches – e.g. wholegrain bread or wraps, salad ingredients, reduced fat cheese or lean meats. If you don’t have much fridge space, thing about nonperishable foods you can keep on hand such as tinned fish (e.g. salmon/tuna), tinned legumes/four-bean mix, nuts, microwavable rice, etc).

If you have to travel for your work and find yourself on the go, you could make a simple sandwich using wholegrain bread or wraps, salad ingredients, canned fish, reduced fat cheese or lean meats. You can take fresh fruit or nuts as snacks. Finally, make sure to keep yourself hydrated between seeing patients as this will help keep your body functioning at its best and boost your concentration.

FOAM ROLLING Foam rolling can help alleviate the aches and pains that come from sitting and engaging in repetitive movements.

Ann Nielsen, personal trainer and accredited functional foam rolling instructor, has held foam rolling workshops specifically for dental practices.

In terms of occupational hazards for dentists, she often sees postural issues and overuse injury.

“Overuse, postural issues and stress are the main things that will create pain, discomfort, tension and muscle tightness – and this is where foam rolling comes in,” she says. “You can liken foam rolling to a self-managed massage. Overall, it releases trigger points, tension and glued-up spots in the fascia. It also improves circulation. Personally, I used to see a massage therapist sometimes two or three times a week before I found foam rolling.

“A good saying I have is: free your body with foam rolling.

It’s about freeing up tensions and all the postural misalignments and stress, overuse and repetitive movements. The great thing for dentists is that you can use a foam roller any time and any place. The feedback I have had from dentists is they just love it. The biggest thing they say is, ‘I didn’t know I was so sore.’ It helps with sleep too.”

How our members keep healthy

DR NICOLE HOCEK With a career in dentistry and five-year-old twins at home, Nicole is no stranger to stress. Hence, she prioritises exercise before work.

“It’s a calm before the storm kind of thing, particularly prior to big work days,” she says.

Nicole is a runner and triathlete who spent several years in Kalgoorlie immersed in a running and triathlon club. When she moved back to Perth three years ago, she was a bit lost, finding solo runs difficult to stay motivated. Via a group called ‘Running Mums Australia’, Nicole was able to connect online to others close to where she lives, and who she’ll run with in rain, hail or shine at 5am (or earlier if someone needs to because of work, kids or life). “We have a run and sort out our lives before the rest of the world gets up,” she says. “It’s the best way to start the day,” In 2021, Nicole returned to Kalgoorlie and was the female winner of the Pipeline marathon. “It was a complete surprise when I crossed the finish line, as we go to visit friends for the weekend and just enjoy the race,” she says. “We often joke the best part of racing is the pasta night prior and the celebratory feast after!

“I’m very lucky my husband is my biggest supporter; he brings our girls to my races and is quite used to the early morning alarms. We try to teach them that being active is just part of our everyday lives rather than something that’s a chore.”

When it comes to other ways to take care of herself, Nicole says she thinks healthier eating goes along with training, as food becomes more about energy requirements and what makes you feel good to keep moving. “It comes as a lifestyle change as part of what you do. My running friends and I are always swapping new recipes to keep things interesting, but cake and biscuits are my weakness!”

DR PARUL BHATIA Dr Parul Bhatia says dentistry is a stressful profession – being both physically and mentally demanding. “I’m a business owner and I believe that if I take care of myself then I can give my patients and my team the best possible care and support,” she says. “It becomes a vicious cycle of burn-out and stress if we don’t have these care regimes in place.”

Parul goes to the gym to keep physically strong and to avoid aches and pains. “I couple that with remedial massages to help me recover from work and training,” she says.

She loves reading self-care and books about growth and leadership skills. “Meditation is so good as well,” she adds. “This helps me deal with the mental stresses of our profession and the demands of being a business owner.”

Parul also tries to take a holiday every four to six months (she says this does not have to be a big break – mini breaks are perfect) and tries to get a good night’s sleep. She also prioritises meal planning every Friday.

“This means we eat healthy, and everyone is fed well in the family,” she says. “Sleep and healthy eating are great foundations for long-term health and wellbeing.”

DR ARMANDO MENEZES Dr Armando Menezes focuses on eating well and exercising regularly. “We get Hello Fresh delivered weekly so that Monday to Friday there is no need to think what I am going to cook for my wife, two adult children and one teenager at home every weeknight,” he says.

He also preps lunch, morning and afternoon tea and leftover dinner for lunch, so there is no need to buy takeaway. “It’s important to exercise regularly,” he adds.

“Find something you enjoy. I go to the gym Monday to Thursday every week and go for one to two walks on the weekends. Even if tired, you always feel better after whatever exercise you like doing.” adawa.com.au

The rewards and challenges of

Special Needs Dentistry

With only one Special Needs Dentistry Specialist in the entire State, Dr Jee-Yun Leung has her work cut out for her in her chosen profession. Fortunately, she’s up to the challenge of looking after the medically complex, people with disability, those with psychiatric conditions, as well as geriatric and other vulnerable populations.

Like many dentists, Jee-Yun was drawn to the profession because of the unique combination of art, science and interaction with people. As a child, Jee-Yun loved sewing, musical instruments, but wanted a career that would be “intellectually challenging and rewarding in that I would be directly helping and building up relationships with patients”.

I was confronted by the challenges faced by those living with special needs and their carers, and found great reward in turning compassion into action. I actually didn’t find out Special Needs Dentistry was a specialty until my fourth year of dental school, whilst at a Dental Public Health conference.

Jee-Yun says her interest in special needs originated from volunteering on a camp for children with special needs in high school and working part-time at an Australian Red Cross respite centre during university.

“I was confronted by the challenges faced by those living with special needs and their carers, and found great reward in turning compassion into action,” she recalls. “I actually didn’t find out Special Needs Dentistry was a specialty until my fourth year of dental school, whilst at a Dental Public Health conference.

“This led to me undertaking my fifth-year elective placements at the Special Needs Dentistry Departments in Sydney and Melbourne and coming to the realisation that I could combine my profession with my passion for helping those living with special needs.”

Jee-Yun says her career choices have been driven by a strong belief in social responsibility and desire to tackle the oral health inequalities faced by those living with special needs.

Dr Jee-Yun Leung Which three words best describe you?

Bubbly, motivated and caring. Though the nickname “Energizer Bunny” was coined by one of my patients and adopted by my Adelaide colleagues!

What do you do in your spare time?

Swimming, exploring the picturesque wine and produce regions of SA, volunteering on the music team at my local church, and Zooming interstate/ international family… but hopefully I’ll now have more time to reignite my love of dressmaking and learning French (and see family in-person).

If you weren’t a dentist, what would you be doing for a living?

I initially studied commerce and mathematics at university with the hope of becoming an actuary.

So glad I did not end up pursuing that.

What is your favourite part of the world?

Living in London, I loved the global and diverse nature of the city and proximity to travel all over Europe. However, being away from Perth for a number of years makes one realise that home is where the heart is.

Is there anything that people might be surprised to learn about you?

I have managed to survive all the above without coffee addiction. In fact, I have only ever drunk one full mug of coffee in my life (due to a café mucking up my takeaway order)!

Graduating from UWA in 2012, she sought to attain a good sense of the various dental needs of the community by working in regional and metropolitan, and government and private practice contexts. She worked with Dental Health Services WA in the North Perth Special Needs Clinic (seeing patients with intellectual disability) and the Domiciliary Unit (doing aged care facility visits). A position at the then newly opened Fiona Stanley Hospital came up, where Jee-Yun saw medically complex patients. Throughout these years, she also maintained private practice work to finesse her general dental skills.

It was fascinating working in a country where SND is so established at all levels of the healthcare system by a well-supported workforce of more than 300 specialists and learning UK evidence-based guidelines and public health policy.

“During this period, I received an ADRF grant to research oral health delivery systems that integrate dentistry with the array of health and social services available for people with special needs, and performed voluntary dental work in various SND contexts,” she says.

“To gain an international perspective on what can be achieved (and also to get to know my British husband’s family better), I moved to London in 2017 to study the Masters in Special Care Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London,” she adds.

“The UK is a global leader in SND clinical care and public health research. It was fascinating

working in a country where SND is so established at all levels of the healthcare system by a well-supported workforce of more than 300 specialists and learning UK evidence-based guidelines and public health policy.

“By that stage, SND well and truly felt like my calling, and so I moved from London to Adelaide to commence the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry. Needless to say, after almost five years away from home, I’m very excited to be returning to Perth.”

During her time in Adelaide, Jee-Yun says she was very blessed to be mentored by Associate Professor Sharon Liberali and work within a highly supportive team at the Adelaide Dental Hospital’s Special Needs Unit.

“South Australia has a robust, specialist-led SND service, a network of general dentists whom we support to provide shared care, and strong relationships with both public and private medical specialists,” she says. “I had the opportunity to work at the Adelaide Dental Hospital (medically complex and disability), Royal Adelaide Hospital (head and neck cancer multidisciplinary team and GA theatre sessions), Women and Children’s Hospital (transition clinic), Queen Elizabeth Hospital (in-patient, psychiatric and orthogeriatric care), community dental clinics, rural clinics, and domiciliary aged care. I also supervised final year dental students on their SND placements at the Adelaide Dental Hospital and Housing Choices Common Ground dental clinic (a free, volunteer-run service for refugees, victims of domestic violence and homeless people), and produced a research thesis on early detection of

When asked what she is hoping to achieve for Special Needs Dentistry on her arrival back in WA, she says she hopes to raise awareness of the scope of SND amongst the profession; support general dentists to feel confident and see the reward in treating people living with special needs; be involved in improving access to SND services; and expose current students to SND to encourage others to specialise (and return back to WA!).

“There are only 26 AHPRA registered specialists in SND Australiawide,” she says. “However, with an ageing population, increasing number of co-morbidities associated with increased life expectancy, improved survival rates of those born with disability, increasing number of people surviving acute and chronic medical diagnoses, and increased complexity of medical treatment, the population requiring SND care is rapidly ballooning beyond the capacity of the current specialist workforce and requires a wholeof-dental-team approach.”

Jee-Yun would like dental colleagues and peers to know that Special Needs Dentistry is an incredibly rewarding and intellectually challenging field for the clinician, which also meets a significantly underserved need in our population.

“When we grow to know our patients as people, it can be a very positive, fun, joyous and a humbling experience,” she says. “I have probably gained more from my patients than they have from me, and learnt so much from their resilience and tenacity.”

She adds the treatment planning and dentistry involved in SND is complex. “It requires extensive knowledge of evidence-based medical and dental guidelines; an appreciation of multiple overlying medical/social factors in a compromised oral environment; a good understanding of material science and strong clinical expertise (i.e. the ability to think outside the box – you need to know the rules to bend them!); and involves a more holistic and rational philosophy of care,” she says.

“People living with special needs have greater unmet dental needs compared to the general population due to various patient, carer, dentist and health system factors. I would love to support other dentists to treat this pretty amazing population, whilst also being available to manage the more complex cases requiring specialist input.”

A new era for prosthodontics at UWA Discipline Lead in Prosthodontics and Graduate Program Convenor at UWA Dental School, Dr Adam Hamilton, has returned to WA with a determination to make a difference.

Dr Adam Hamilton returned to Western Australia last year after spending several years in the US. He brings a wealth of international experience and enthusiasm to the Prosthodontics program.

Adam’s interest in dentistry was sparked at an early age.

“When my sister was eight years old, she was playing on a playground at primary school, and she fell off the top of a fort,” Adam recalls. “She landed on her feet, but somehow her front teeth ended up embedded in her knee cap.

“I was nine at the time and seeing the dentist put them back into place was my first exposure to dental trauma.

Obviously, her teeth did not go back all the way and going through orthodontic treatment to try to correct that was a big part of her life. She has a beautiful smile now, but it also exposed me to the impact that something like that can have on the personality of someone – their wellbeing having aesthetic consequences, and the joy of having that addressed.”

Adam was also influenced to join the profession when his brother (orthodontist Dr Robert Hamilton) enrolled into Dental School. “You always look up to your older brother,” Adam says.

A VARIED CAREER Adam says the decision to specialise was a natural progression. “I was excited to work with my hands,” he says. “From a young age, I was carrying a hammer and I always enjoyed building things with my father. I enjoyed the physical creation that prosthodontics allows us to do – the diagnosis, mental stimulation, working with other people and being a leader all appealed.”

Adam did prosthodontics courses as a general dentist, but it was when he took a patient record to Dr Glen Liddelow and shadowed him, that Glen suggested applying for prosthodontics.

“When I got home, I realised the deadline for the prosthodontics program in Sydney had passed. The deadline for The University of Melbourne had also passed, but I thought I would email them anyway and they got back to me and said they were still looking for another applicant and to come to an interview – and the rest is history.”

After travelling to Boston and giving a lecture (which ended up being extended from one hour to four hours on the request of attendees), Adam was asked to work at the university. “It was an offer too good to refuse,” he says. “How do you turn down an offer from Harvard in one of the best implant programs in the world?

Following completion of his prosthodontics specialisation, Adam was encouraged by the International Team for Implantology to apply for a scholarship. He was accepted to go to the University of Florida to their Centre for Implant Dentistry, under the mentorship of Dr William Martin.

Adam only ever intended on being in the US for year, and with his bags packed to come back to Australia, he attended an ITI congress in California.

“As part of that congress, they had a segment called ITI Live,” Adam recalls. “This segment is a unique thing at a congress, where anyone attending can submit a lecture title, and as part of that submission you have to prepare a seven-minute presentation.

It’s interesting that seven minutes on stage completely changed the course of my life.

“All the lecture titles are put up on a screen and the audience votes for the title that catches their interest.

Out of the 30 titles, I think there were only five people chosen to present and I was very fortunate that mine was one of the few selected.”

After he gave his presentation, Adam was approached

by Dr German Gallucci from The Harvard Dental School of Medicine, who asked if Adam would be interested in going to Boston to lecture to their students.

“At that time my fiancee' was still in Australia and was expecting me to come home. I called her and I said I have this offer to go to Boston and work at Harvard University and she hung up the phone and didn’t call me back for two days. Then she called and said: ‘Ok we’re moving to Boston.’ It’s interesting that seven minutes on stage completely changed the course of my life.”

Adam’s experience at Boston was invaluable. On first day in the job, Professor of Implant Dentistry, Daniel Buser, from The University of Bern in Switzerland, began a sabbatical and moved into the office directly opposite Adam. Adam saw Professor Buser every day and was able to pick his brain, all while admiring his willingness to share his knowledge and experience in implant dentistry.

Adam travelled often, lecturing in Brazil, Chili, Europe and China. “Over time I developed a passion for educating and sharing the knowledge I had, although I had to try to tone my Australian accent down enough so people could understand me,” he laughs. “I was promoted to assistant professor, which was a big honour.

“During that time, I also witnessed the biggest joy of my life, which was the birth of my two sons, with one unexpectedly being delivered by my own hands, but that is a story for another time.”

Around that time, COVID hit, which made Adam and his family consider returning to Australia. “Fortunately, the position at UWA became available and these positions don’t come up very often. It seemed like a great opportunity to balance my aspirations of a career as a prosthodontist together with family life and to be back in a country that I love”, Adam says.

A NEW START AT UWA After six-and-a-half years in Boston, Adam returned to WA in mid-2021 to take up the position at UWA. “It’s exciting to see the progress of the university,” he says. “It’s also exciting to see a lot of opportunity for improvement and development of the prosthodontic program here at The University of Western Australia and what impact I can make.

I want to show people that you can be a high-level clinician and an academic at the same time – they are not mutually exclusive.

“I am hoping to change the perception of academics in Australia, inspiring more younger dentists to take a role in academics as a career, which can be fulfilling and exciting and rewarding. I want to show people that you can be a high-level clinician and an academic at the same time – they are not mutually exclusive.”

Adam says his focus is on the specialty program of prosthodontics at the university. “UWA doesn’t have

a long history of having a specialty prosthodontic program, but developing an internationally high-level calibre of prosthodontists from UWA would be a huge asset to the university,” he says. “I think we have the technology and facilities and infrastructure to be able to do that, provided we can get the right students and encourage more students to consider specialisation in prosthodontics as a rewarding career pathway.”

As well as his role at the university, Adam also works for the Centre of Prosthodontics – in keeping with his role as a clinician.

“The most rewarding and enjoyable part of my work is my patients,” Adam says. “Seeing the result of the fruits of the labour for some patients can be after many years of treatment. Witnessing them move from being very embarrassed with their smiles to being confident people, and seeing the transformation, not only with their dentition but their personality and their overall health, is so rewarding.

“Second to that is the same feeling you get when you impart that knowledge on a student,” he adds. “When I see them really grasping a concept and developing their skills, I feel accomplishment – even more so than what I do personally.”

Oral Medicine via Telehealth

Telehealth in dentistry is now acceptable clinical practice. Due to service restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, dentists have been obliged and continue to triage and manage patients over the phone or video call (virtually)1.

The rationale for the push towards teledentistry and virtual consultations is to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, and this has been adopted with success in many countries.

Although oral medicine practice is not typically aerosol generating, the patient population cared for by oral medicine specialists are often medically complex and/or elderly. Virtual consultations can facilitate triage of urgent new cases and continuity of care of existing patients that do not require face to face consultations1. Clinical scenarios that warrant telehealth consultation in oral medicine during mandated service restrictions include: • Orofacial pain including TMJ closed lock, TMJ open lock, and psychosocial distress • Acute neurological changes such as sensory deficit and facial palsy • Trigeminal neuralgia • Orofacial swelling • Oral lumps, blisters and ulceration • Oral mucosal diseases including white and red patches There are now a number of publications that support the provision of telehealth in oral medicine as standard of care based on data acquired during the pandemic. Although there were initial reservations among clinicians on the use of telehealth in oral medicine, 84% of patients in one study were satisfied with a virtual consultation. Similarly, oral medicine specialist

providers reported telehealth as adequate care for 49% of patients (i.e. they did not require subsequent face-to-face consultation). Of interest, a third of patients required a biopsy after the virtual consultation, which would necessitate a face-to-face appointment1.

A major concern is the risk of misdiagnosis given the limitations of not carrying out a physical examination of the patient. On this issue, one study investigated the utilisation of a mobile-phone application to review images and identify oral cancers and oral potentially malignant disorders. The researchers found this tool to be reliable for early detection of high-risk lesions2. Another study reported that patients had a 3-point median reduction in pain from their initial virtual consultation to the first review appointment. These patients reported 65% improvement in oral symptoms3.

While these early studies have found telehealth in oral medicine to be useful and reliable, there is a need to educate and train dentists and staff on how to optimally utilise telehealth to maximise its efficiency4. Also there appears to be a shift in mindset among patients, with 74% of patients reporting interest in using telehealth and 49% preferring telehealth over conventional appointments. As anticipated, there was correlation between the patient’s interest in virtual consultations and computer skills5, highlighting the need to also train patients so they become accustomed to using telehealth.

With nearly 30% of Australians living in rural areas and a significant shortage of oral medicine specialists in Australia, telehealth presents an opportunity to address the issues related to access to care. Virtual consultations can also be extended to Australian defence force personnel and offshore workers. Telehealth in oral medicine will prove to be a cost-effective tool; whereby patients will be able to access oral medicine services from anywhere without the financial burden associated with travel, accommodation and loss of income. The goals of telehealth in oral medicine are congruent with early diagnosis, prompt management, and prevention of morbidity and mortality.

Vale Dr Arasa Kumar Savundra 12 SEPTEMBER 1928 – 22 DECEMBER 2021

Dr Andrew Savundra pays tribute to his much-loved father, orthodontist Dr Arasa Kumar Savundra.

Dr Arasa Kumar Savundra was born in Colombo Ceylon (Sri Lanka) on September 12, 1928, to Albert Williams Savundranayagam and Eunice Parimalan. He was the youngest in a family of three children with his older brother Rasa and older sister Ranee. He was educated at Royal College Colombo and entered university to study dentistry at the University of Peradeniya.

Kumar then retuned as the Lecturer in Orthodontics at the University of Peradeniya and was one of the first specialist orthodontists to be trained overseas in Sri Lanka. It was in Kandy that their second child James was born. The young couple had two children and a house in Kandy, but Kumar felt that the future in Sri Lanka was uncertain.

It was in the dental clinic as a student that a young Burgher girl turned up for a dental appointment, and Kumar thought she was very nice. This was Carmen, and their long relationship started, although it was kept quiet for many years. The couple met up in England when Kumar was studying for his dental fellowship and then returned to Sri Lanka to work.

They were married in Kandy on December 27, 1961.

Kumar was accepted into the Orthodontic program at Eastman Dental Hospital, and the couple went back to England for his post graduate studies. He qualified as an orthodontist and their eldest son Andrew was born in London during their second stint in the UK.

Kumar made the brave decision to leave his position in Sri Lanka and applied for permanent residency in Australia, emigrating in December 1970. He was 42 and in the prime of his career. He was unable to obtain registration in Victoria, where Carmen’s family were all based, but was able to register as an orthodontist in New South Wales only.

Jobs were difficult to find, and Kumar was offered a position in Darwin at the dental hospital, which he took as there were limited opportunities as a new arrival to Australia. Carmen, James and Andrew stayed in Melbourne with Carmen’s family, as she was expecting their youngest brother Chris, who was born in April

1971. After Chris was born the family moved to Darwin for two years, which was considered the end of the earth from Melbourne! And still is!

It was during this time that the Begg Light Wire appliance was popular in Australia and around the world. Kumar was told by the orthodontists visiting the NT from Adelaide that he must learn the “Australian method” and come to Adelaide to do the Begg course.

He attended Dr Begg’s course in 1971 in Adelaide and became a Begg practitioner.

Kumar was then offered a position as an orthodontist at the Perth Dental Hospital, which he accepted, and the family moved to Perth in 1973, about a year before Cyclone Tracy devastated the Northern Territory capital. He established a country clinic in Kalgoorlie and entered private practice relatively late in life with a practice in West Perth and Willetton. The Kalgoorlie Clinic started as a service from Perth Dental Hospital, and he was one of the first country orthodontists in WA. He also worked at Fremantle Dental Clinic for many years after he left Perth Dental Hospital.

Kumar was a keen photographer of people and places, especially wildlife, and enjoyed trips back to Sri Lanka’s national parks to get that perfect shot.

Prior to his retirement Kumar took up art classes and was also a member of a singing group, which he enjoyed immensely. He completed a Diploma of Art, which he was very proud of. He was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration about 20 years ago, which presented many challenges for him. He wasn’t able to continue much of the art and singing because of his deteriorating eyesight.

He attended the Blind Association (currently known as VisAbility) and attended two to three times per week. He learnt computing, art, pottery, and went to the gym. He also learnt Braille, Japanese and did cooking classes. VisAbility was a great support to him. He was regularly attended the Swanbourne Uniting Church and in later years the Floreat Uniting Church. It was his belief in the Lord that helped him in his journey and become accepting of his visual disability.

Tribute from Australian Society of Orthodontists (WA) It is with great sadness that the ASO learned of the passing of Dr Kumar Savundra. Kumar was one of Perth’s most senior and wellrespected orthodontists.

Kumar obtained his specialist training at the Eastman in London. He arrived in Perth at a time when there were only 12 specialist orthodontists. Kumar treated thousands of patients throughout his career both in private and public practice. His Kalgoorlie practice was one of West Australia’s first country specialist practices and is carried on by his son Andrew to this day. Kumar practiced at a time when orthodontics relied on tremendous wire bending skills and without the benefit of many of the modern technologies that we benefit from today.

On a personal note, Uncle Kumar was my orthodontist as well as being a very close family friend since I was four. I spent many happy afternoons playing in the “plaster room” next to his surgery after my appointments.

Undoubtedly this put me on a path to orthodontics. He was one of the kindest people I have ever met. A true gentleman orthodontist with amazing clinical skills. He will be sadly missed.

Tribute from Dr Mithran Goonewardene Kumar was a gentleman; a real gentleman who had an incredible influence on so many.

Kumar the educator started his career as a faculty member in prosthodontics in Sri Lanka before embarking on training in the UK. He returned to Ceylon to take up the role as the first faculty member in orthodontics. Over the years, it’s incredible how so many of Kumar’s ex-students in Sri Lanka, Australia and the UK commented directly to me of his influence on their development, again stressing his kind and gentle demeanour.

Kumar was a devoted family man, husband, father and grandfather. His generosity and wise counsel were seen through the many acts of kindness beyond his immediate family, always prepared to support those in need. His calm, considered demeanour was appreciated by all who knew him. When interacting with Kumar, these qualities were evident even after brief interactions as he never focused on his personal circumstances but genuinely enquired about your wellbeing and others around you – a truly caring soul whose approach continued right through to his last days in hospital.

As a young dentist, I worked in the Perth Dental Hospital and directly worked with Kumar prior to training in orthodontics. Again, his gentle demeanour was recognised and appreciated by all his colleagues and the numerous patients who were given the gift of his care. Kumar was a great friend of my family, having shared a high school classroom with my father and following relatively similar paths from Ceylon to the UK and ultimately, Australia, where our families frequently interacted in the relatively small Sri Lankan community at the time.

Orthodontics is a wonderful discipline, as the impact of your treatment on so many often lasts a lifetime. Dental education also is so rewarding and is also a discipline in which you develop long-term relationships with patients/parents and young dentists and often play a major role in the development of young personalities into wonderful adults. Kumar had such an impact from his initial role delivering orthodontic care in the public environment through to engaging the private environment both in the city and a rural setting.

As an educator, clinician, family member, gentleman and friend, we celebrate the life of someone so generous with his spirit that will remain part of all who were fortunate to know Kumar.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

This course comprises lectures, demonstrations and hands-on components. The outcome of endodontic treatment is generally quite predictable if recommended and biologically based treatment procedures and protocols are followed. However, clinical endodontic procedures can be technically difficult at times.

Winthrop Professor Paul Abbott is the Winthrop Professor of Clinical Dentistry at The University of Western Australia. Prior to taking a full-time university position in 2002, he spent 17 years in private specialist practice in Perth and Melbourne.

He was Dean and Head of the School of Dentistry at The University of Western Australia and Director of the Oral Health Centre of WA from 2003-2009.

Typical complications (especially in posterior teeth with extensive restorations) are often related to pulp canal calcification, access, visibility and canal anatomy, rather than to any other factors. However, many of these problems can be overcome by having a thorough understanding of the disease processes that are being managed and the causes of these diseases.

This course will provide an update on the various diseases and their courses. Then, some “trade secrets” of an experienced endodontist will be discussed and demonstrated to help you simplify the treatment process. Participants will then be able to practise these techniques by doing the hands-on practical exercises on extracted teeth.

The main objective of this course is to prepare general practitioners for an immediate improvement in their ability to perform predictable endodontic treatment.

He has presented over 800 lectures and courses in 44 countries. He has published 196 articles in refereed journals and 23 textbook chapters. In 2015, he was appointed as Editor-in-chief of the international journal Dental Traumatology. He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and for service to the dental profession, particularly in education and research. In 2015, he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia.

Meet Dr Gaurav Vasudeva Prior to his upcoming WA Dental CPD course, we caught up with the owner of The Endodontic Practice Perth.

Gaurav was born in India and raised in multiple cities, as both his parents served in the defence forces.

“My primary dental degree was also from India, where I worked for a few years and further qualified and completed my initial endodontic postgraduate degree,” Gaurav recalls. “The Indian medical/health education system is exceptionally competitive, and one had to sit one of the toughest exams to be selected in a dental school.

“The majority of my late teens and my 20s was spent studying and expanding my skills as a professional. I had a keen interest in teaching, hence was associated with a few different universities in North India.”

Gaurav says the experience of living and working in different countries and cities has been invaluable, with his extensive CV including heading an endodontic program in Muscat, Oman, and being awarded a diplomate in specialist field of endodontics with the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.

He moved to Sydney in 2012 to be closer to his dentist sibling, and then after some years working in Tasmania, he moved to Perth.

Gaurav says he found endodontics to be the most challenging in dental school, which is why he chose to specialise in the subject. “I always considered myself someone with good hand skills and found endodontics fascinating,” he says. “It isn’t routine, predictable work due to complexity of the treatment. Every tooth has its own unique anatomy from inside. Besides the technical aspect, it’s very rewarding getting your patients out of pain and seeing the progress of healing of infections whilst patients retain their own teeth.”

Gaurav always wanted his own endodontic practice. “I had a clear vision of what I wanted and the way I wanted to practice,” he recalls. “I established my practice, The Endodontic Practice Perth, in early 2021. I continue to teach remotely and present both internationally and locally as teaching is my passion. I love to be able to contribute and share the knowledge for the betterment of the profession and community.”

For Gaurav, referral endodontic practice is challenging, which is what drives him to push himself. “I love interacting with my patients and how I feel when I can enhance their quality of life a tiny bit by retaining their natural teeth, free of infection and pain,” he says. “It’s greatly rewarding.”

Gaurav will be presenting ‘Practising Safe and Efficient Endodontics’ in April, a CPD course that is suitable for dentists with all levels of experience. “Although endodontics is theoretically practised the same way as 20 or even 40 years ago, just like any other branch of dentistry, keeping up is important,” he says.

“The idea is not to change the concepts and baseline treatment protocols that work and have always worked, but to add new layers and see what is available, including new techniques and materials/instruments that will help us do our job more efficiently.

“We will have microscopes for attendees, which enable them to visualise the internal anatomy better. We’ll introduce them to newer materials and instruments for root canal preparation, including lots of tips and tricks along the way. The idea is to practise endodontics more confidently, predictably and with minimal iatrogenic mishaps.”

When asked why it’s important for dentists to have a good understanding of safe endodontics, Gaurav explains endodontics has one of the highest rates of iatrogenic errors. “They can be from small procedural errors to more serious, life-threating mishaps,” he says. “As we are trying to save a tooth and our treatment is expected to work for the long-term, it’s important the procedural errors are minimised. Even a small error such as ledge or over enlargement of access preps to find canals can reduce the long-term prognosis for the tooth.

“We may not see our own endodontic failures, but they occur. Most endodontists see retreatment cases routinely, which can be almost 25 to even 30% of their referrals.

“In my opinion, the success rates are far higher when root canals are planned and performed start-tofinish by a single clinician as primary treatment,” he adds. “Correcting iatrogenic errors helps increase the lifespan of the tooth but not sufficiently as compared to a good solid primary endodontic treatment with no errors and a good timely post-op restoration as indicated.”

Now set up in his own endodontic practice, Gaurav feels he is at the beginning of a productive and rewarding career.

“I’m glad I’m on that path now, but this is just the start for me,” he reveals. “I have a keen interest and passion in teaching, and I want to be able to continue to do that in one way or another, whenever I get an opportunity to do so. This course is a product of the same and I have a few more topics on my mind that I would love to teach in time.”

I would be serving in one of the defence forces/ military or be a teacher of some kind, following my parents’ professions.

What is your favourite book or band/ musician?

I consider myself an encyclopedia of rock bands from mid-70s to early 90s. My favourite bands are too many, but to name one, it would be Def Leppard.

I like to mostly read self-improvement books and one book comes to mind that had an impact on me is The Saint, Surfer and the CEO

by Robin Sharma.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Music drives me and has the power to not only uplift my spirits but has influenced my focus at different stages of life. I spend most of my free time with my almost six-year-old son. I like to re-live my childhood with him. We do some playbased activities together, which is a lot of fun and a great stress buster for me. Besides that, I love nature and often try and explore tracks and trails for short hikes or even a drive when I can. I hope to learn the art of camping soon.

Is there anything people might be surprised to learn about you?

At one point I was a registered dentist in four countries with specialist registration in three of them. I have recently started to retire my dentist license from some non-Australian countries.

I have recently picked up my guitar after 20 years of not playing. Languages fascinate me and this year I am learning French. I hope to be fluent in it someday.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

The use of photography in dentistry has revolutionised the way clinicians diagnose and treat their patients. This course will teach the fundamentals of digital SLR photography and the principles of flash systems and lighting techniques.

Szabolcs Hant began his studies in Hungary in 1993 and completed a technician’s Masters’ Degree in 2004. In Europe, he had the opportunity to learn from masters such as Klaus Mutherties, Oliver Brix, Aki Yoshida, Robert Zubak and others who continue to inspire.

The opportunity for hands-on learning using your own camera and equipment will be provided, as well as other camera systems. All delegates will receive a set of intra-oral mirrors and retractors as part of the course fee.

He has had a passionate interest in aesthetic restorations and photography since first using a compact camera and in the following years with a DSLR. His excellence in photography has been recognised with winning photography competitions.

Dr Graham Carmichael is a Board-certified prosthodontist and faculty member of the Brånemark Center in West Perth. He graduated from The University of Western Australia School of Dentistry with Honours, has a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics from the University of Sydney and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

Dr Carmichael has lectured nationally and internationally, and is actively involved in the teaching and education of prosthodontics, and surgical and prosthetic implant therapy.

Leveraging the temporary full expensing measure How to make the most of EOFY by timing your business purchases

Practices are set to go through the third year of ups and downs brought on by the pandemic. But the pursuit of business continuity and growth means that owners still need to make important calls for their practices. The good news is that there are some certainties that you can take advantage of – one of which is an important opportunity to consider and action well ahead of tax time.

As a result of the pandemic’s impact on the economy, the government announced support and financial assistance in recovery planning. The instant asset write-off for businesses was initially increased fivefold – from $30,000 to $150,000. But as part of the government’s 2021/22 budget, it moved to a temporary full expensing rule where there is now no value threshold. This means any business earning up to $5 billion can write-off the full cost of any depreciable asset purchased from 6 October 2020 and first used or installed by 30 June 2022.

So it’s a timely reminder for business owners to look to take advantage of the settings before the end of this financial year. After all, making a significant business purchase – like a new dental chair – can provide benefits beyond its primary purpose such as cash flow, savings for other expenses or upgrades, and increased patient satisfaction.

Another major consideration for tax time is the supply of stock. Ongoing delays from overseas manufacturers, plus a spike in sales and stock shortages, could mean that leaving purchases to the last minute could see deliveries and installation fall outside of the current financial year, so avoid cutting it too close and missing out.

When it comes to financing the goods, it’s been widely assumed that you must pay cash in order to get the write-off. However, you can actually borrow funds to

acquire the eligible assets. Facilities such as a chattel mortgage, or equipment loan, may meet the criteria.

You can also buy from multiple sources or buy multiple eligible items under one invoice.

Here are a few general rules for the measure to confirm with your accountant: • For assets you start to hold, and first use (or have installed ready for use) for a taxable purpose from 6 October 2020 to 30 June 2022, the instant asset write-off threshold does not apply. You can immediately deduct the business portion of the asset under temporary full expensing • Goods can be new or second-hand • Goods are first held from 6 October 2020, and first used or installed by 30 June 2022 • You can make numerous claims across many tax invoices or with multiple items on the one invoice • It’s not a one-time-only offer, just so long as each purchase meets the criteria • If financed, the goods must be under a specific loan type, as not all facilities are appropriate • Assets that fall into this scheme include medical equipment and devices, dental chairs, IT equipment including servers, computer and phone hardware, along with scanners, copiers etc. Plus practice furniture, cabinetry, white goods and so on • All work vehicles to the extent that they are used for business purposes Remember, the full expensing scheme is a temporary measure. You should always speak with your financial adviser or accountant for specific advice about how it applies to your personal circumstances and needs.

Overview of the ADA HR Advisory Service

The world of human resources and employment relations can be difficult to navigate given Australia’s complex industrial relations framework, which is constantly changing. In addition, many practices may not have the scope for dedicated HR staff or consultants. The ADA HR Advisory Service is a service available to all member dentists (practising or retired) and dentistry students, and their authorised representatives. The HR Advisory Service gives you access to immediate employment and industrial relations advice, provided through the telephone advisory service.

The ADA HR Advisory Service is not able to assist with patient issues or advise on industry practice or regulations.

Taxation, detailed superannuation and financial advice are also out of scope for the HR Advisory Service.

The HR Advisory Service is able to support members in understanding specific terms and provisions of contracts. It is recommended that members email a copy of the contract with any specific questions about clauses or terms within a contract to the HR Advisor Service, and a consultant can then call them back to discuss their queries.

The HR Advisory Service cannot, however, advise members as to whether an offer within a contract (such as remuneration) is reasonable and if you should accept it. A full contract review is also not available through the HR Advisory Service but can be performed on a fee for service basis.
