ADAMS STATE COLLEGE MISSION STATEMENT Adams State College dedicates its resources to provide opportunity and access for all students. college opportunity: let’s pay it forward Seventy-eight million baby boomers are set to retire in the near future. As part of this group, I am in company with the most highly educated generation in American history. My generation took advantage of relatively inexpensive post-secondary education subsidized by direct state support of public colleges and universities, as well as by federally subsidized student loans and benefits from the original GI Bill.

For many years the United States could claim the highest average of college educated citizens in the world. But as us old David Svaldi geezers have started to retire, the U.S. may be losing its lead to India, China, and others.

There is a new “bubble” of college-age students that could replace us retiring boomers. Their circumstances are similar to mine in the 1960s: most are not affluent, and they may be the first individuals in their family to attend college. However, these students do not look like me – lucky for them. The largest percentage of these potential students is Hispanic and lives in the West and the Southwest U.S. Opportunities for today’s students are more limited. Relative to the 1960s, public higher education is very expensive. With increasing demands on state budgets, the proportion devoted to subsidizing public colleges and universities has fallen, causing tuition to increase even more. Complex requirements can make the Free Federal Application for Financial Aid Form (FASAFA) daunting to first generation families.

Loan industry abuses, as well as the recent recession’s bank meltdown make applying for and receiving a subsidized college loan a complex process. And while the “New” GI Bill benefits are excellent, actually receiving those benefits is another question.

Contrary to common belief, income level is the single most powerful predictor of who will graduate from college. A recent study referenced in The Chronicle of Higher Education indicated that only 10 percent of U.S. college students in the lowest income quartiles will complete a 4-year college degree in 4-6 years. In contrast, the completion rate for students in the highest income quartile is 76 percent.

Income disparities and class stratification in the U.S have grown since the 1960s.

In fact, one research summary indicates the gap between rich and poor will widen further, if the current trend continues. Some citizens will have access to all our society can offer, while others will be frozen into poverty and low-paying jobs. (Think of this as Aspen vs. the temporary housing communities near Eagle and Rifle).

Most students of history have a general understanding of the French Revolution and the violence that arose from poverty and class stratification. The greatest threat to our affluence and security as a nation is not from without our borders; it will be from within. No great civilization has ever survived such social stratification. We need to find ways, despite economic challenges, to support access to and success in higher education. The future of our young people and our country depends on meeting this challenge.

I am confident the coming generation can succeed (and will hopefully do a better job than us boomers), but we need to ensure they have a fair chance at the same opportunities we had.

update fourth semester of growth

ASC enrollment continues to rise

the transformation of asc’s north campus is well into Phase I. The new Residences at Rex (above) will house 65 students in a four-story apartment complex. Most of those apartments will overlook Rex Stadium. The new building includes community stadium facilities, which will feature a restaurant/community room, President’s and Alumni boxes, and new home stands (right). The Alamosa City Council recently approved ASC’s request to vacate portions of Stadium Dr. and Richardson Ave. for the North Campus Green and more campus parking.

Students recently moved into fully remodeled rooms in Coronado A wing (below left); improvements include carpeting throughout. Work immediately began on Coronado D wing, to be followed this summer by remodeling of Girault South. The new apartments and remodeled halls will welcome students to campus next fall.

Design work is beginning on Phase II projects, which include remodeling the ES and Music buildings, as well as the Leon Memorial Concert Hall. A new soccer/lacrosse field (below right) for both men’s and women’s teams will be ready for competition this fall. A graduate student increase of more than 50 percent is fueling Adams State College’s overall enrollment increase of 21 percent for the spring 2010 semester, compared to spring 2009, according to Adams State Provost Michael Mumper ‘76. Undergraduate enrollment this semester is up almost 15 percent, at 2,299. That combines with 669 graduate students for total enrollment of 2,968.

“This is our fourth consecutive semester of strong enrollment growth. We are not only enrolling more students, but those who enroll are better prepared to do college level work. I am pleased that more students from around the state and region are recognizing the high quality and great value of an Adams State education,” Mumper said.

Mumper said enrollment in Adams State’s online master’s program in counselor education is up substantially from last spring; three new cohorts were initiated this semester. The new Master’s in Business Administration, begun last summer, is also attracting more students. The college’s four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program began this semester, and is already at full capacity, with 27 students.

The online Counselor Education program’s recent accreditation by CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) has contributed to demand, according to Dr. Susan Varhely, program chair.

“There is a national movement to online education. Ours is the only CACREP accredited counseling program offered online by a public college or university,” she added. “Counseling is a growing field, and ASC has a long history and good reputation for providing good counseling training. Our counseling faculty are recognized leaders in this field.”

upward trend The college started an upward enrollment trend in fall of 2008, with new undergraduates up by 4 percent. Last spring showed a 2 percent overall enrollment increase over spring 2008. The 2009 summer session enrollment was 19 percent higher than the previous year. Then Adams State achieved its highest enrollment ever in fall 2009, with 3,369 total students – an 18 percent increase from fall 2008.

Students of Hispanic descent account for nearly 29 percent of undergraduates at Adams State. Non-white students comprise more than 37 percent of the undergraduate student body as a whole. Females make up 57 percent of undergraduates.

“We are very proud of the diversity of our student body and the success rates of our minority and women students,” Mumper said.

New program helps former students “Finish” Forty people completed bachelor’s degrees last semester through Adams State’s new Finish program and Office of Degree Completion. Initiated last fall through a $25,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Higher Education, in conjunction with the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education and the Lumina Foundation, the program enrolled 132 adult students, most of whom had not previously attended ASC, according to Provost Michael Mumper ’76.

Working from a state database, Adams State Extended Studies staff contacted more than 1,600 people to offer a transcript assessment and advising. Most were able to apply previous college work to ASC’s Interdisciplinary Studies program and to take remaining requirements through online courses. Extended Studies offers more than 250 under-

graduate courses online or via correspondence.

“We found a lot of people were extremely close to finishing, and some had actually fulfilled degree requirements,” Mumper said.

The grant also supported a study to explore why students do not complete college, entitled “FINISH: Nontraditional No More.” Under the direction of Dr. Melissa Freeman, assistant professor of business, ASC’s Survey Research Center conducted a telephone survey.

“Our findings confirmed that family obligations and/or financial issues most often accounted for the respondents’ stepping out of a degree program,” Freeman said. “Higher education policy needs to take into consideration that adult students often take longer to complete a degree, due to competing demands on their time.”

Governor Bill Ritter recently appointed Alamosa resident Arnold Salazar ‘75 to a three-year term on the Board of Trustees for Adams State College. He replaces Alamosa CPA Tim Bachicha ‘92, whose term expired. The Governor reappointed trustees Charles Scoggin and Steve Valdez ‘87 to another term on the board.

“Higher education in this state is at a real crossroads,” Salazar said. “We need to figure out how we’re going to make higher education a state priority and budget for it. While this is a challenge, it is exciting. The state needs to figure out how to sustain higher education funding, so that it’s not subject to the peaks and valleys of economic fluctuations. It’s important that we create opportunities for people to earn a college education.”

Salazar is Executive Director of Colorado Health Partnerships, an organization covering 43 counties, mostly in

Salazar explained he brings a unique perspective to the ASC board. “I’m a local person who has an extensive network of statewide contacts; I’m connected to three-quarters of the state with my job. I’m from the San Luis Valley and have lived here all my life, but though my work I’ve spent a significant amount of time working in Denver with various state agencies.”

From 1995 to 2004, Salazar served as Executive Director of SyCare, L.L.C., managing a budget of $18 million and providing services in 19 counties in Southeastern Colorado. He also formerly served as Executive Director of the San Luis Valley Mental Health Center and as a para-legal investigator for the Public Defender, working in the Colorado State Penitentiary.

He is a past president of the Colorado Mental Health Centers and Clinics Association and has served with the Caring for Colorado Foundation, Colorado Health Institute, the Governor’s Advisory Council on Mental Health, the Colorado Rural Health Center, and the Governor’s Commission on health care reform (Colorado Care).

He also worked with the Colorado Children’s Campaign and the Colorado Commission for High School Improvement.

Salazar has served as chairman of the Colorado Conservation Voters Action Fund and of the Colorado Wildlife Commission, as well as on the board of Great Outdoors Colorado.

His local service involvements include participation with the San Luis Valley Hispanic League, San Luis Valley Area Health Education Center, the Alamosa County Democratic Central Committee, and Alamosa’s community radio station, KRZA, at one point serving as board president. He was also active with the Alamosa Community Economic Development Corporation and was the San Luis Valley representative for the Colorado Hispanic Agenda Project.

He uses a lance to draw another blood sample from Mitchell's finger as she adjusts her pace to keep up with the machine, located in the new Adams State Human Performance Lab. The lab is managed by Robinson, associate professor of human performance and physical education (HPPE).

A device was placed over Mitchell's head at the beginning of the VO2max test to monitor her oxygen intake, CO2 output, and heart rate as she runs. Every three minutes, Gersick takes a blood sample to track Mitchell's lactate levels. The exercise is a hands-on opportunity for students in Robinson's exercise physiology class.

Mitchell, a junior HPPE major who runs cross-country and track, received extra credit for volunteering for the test.

"The new facility is one of the nicest I've ever been to," she said. The students have completed other tests such as body composition and a Wingate bicycle test of anaerobic power.

“THE LAB IS A HAPPENING PLACE.” When Robinson adds an incline program to the treadmill, Mitchell uses a towel to wipe her forehead as she maxes out.

With encouragement from her testers and fellow students, she makes it for three additional minutes before they start to slow the machine and decrease the incline. One student stands behind the treadmill, his hand outstretched, providing support if needed. Mitchell ran for approximately 20 minutes.

The lab was upgraded with the remodeling of Plachy Hall last year, creating enough space for 20 students, computers, stationary bikes, treadmills, and spacious countertops and cupboards. The treadmill faces a bank of windows looking out onto campus. Robinson said it is a big improvement over the old lab. "We used to cram the students into a hot, windowless room upstairs."

This spring, Robinson is conducting an anaerobic power test on soccer and football players. “The lab is a happening place.” In the Wingate test, athletes go all out for 30 seconds on a special stationary bike that measures power output.

said he is pleased to add the anaerobic testing to his experience with aerobic testing. “I am learning a new skill I can apply either to a future career or to graduate school.”

The hands-on in actual testing bridges a “huge gap” between textbook reading and listening to lectures, said Robinson. “I had very positive responses from the students in the class. Actual testing makes the subject come to life.”

Students planning careers in fitness and physical therapy will benefit from the hands-on training.

Undergraduates have the lab built into their course, whereas graduate students test and practice on each other. “It

is a belief of mine to have all the graduate students experience the testing,” Robinson said. She wants them to know how it feels to go through the procedure. “The students need to understand what their subjects are going through.”

She said she also expects her students to be able to take appropriate action if an issue arises, retrieve the results, and interpret the results for their subjects.

In the future, Robinson hopes to offer VO2max testing, fitness age testing, body composition testing and other athletic testing to Adams State and the greater community.

She talked about the benefits of listening to one’s “personal global positional system––the one that’s hooked up to your heart and mind to let you know when you should change course … when you need to take a side trip … or how to deal with an unexpected detour.”

Drake’s travels off road began just after high school graduation – at age 16 from Sargent High School. By no means did she have a map for her future.

“Surprise trips have changed my life dramatically many times, but never more than the evening my mother posed a simple question, as we stood side-by-side at the kitchen sink.

A few weeks earlier, I had graduated from Sargent High School as valedictorian, with a four-year scholarship to any school in the state––but I wasn’t going to go to college, at all.

I had received an engagement ring for graduation, and I was

going to get married. That’s when my mother asked me, ‘Lynn, are you really ready to start doing dishes?’

“Whoa! No way! I have no idea why it took that particular question to wake up my GPS, but that was not the road I wanted to take. So I enrolled at Adams State – it was close to home.” She said she majored in mathematics because, “I honestly believed if I was going to have to go to college I should pick something I didn’t know much about. … I must have been crazy.”

Subsequent side trips took Drake to medical school as the only woman in a class of 106. She related how she faced the challenges of gender discrimination and, in addition to practicing dermatology, developed a passion for emergency room work. Another opportunity, and Drake’s persistence, led her to Emory University Clinic and her first management position, as chief of dermatology at the Veterans Hospital.

“This was a time of intense political controversy about Agent Orange, a chemical defoliant that some vets had been exposed to. My role taught me how to deal with the press, politicians, and constituent groups – as well as patients who were very angry and upset.”

This post ultimately led to “one of the most important side trips” of her life: a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship. The medical school dean who nominated her told her: “If we don’t participate, we can’t change the system.”

“Talk about going off-road! The first eight weeks in DC to study health policy, I was inundated, meeting with members of Congress, think tank people, lobbyists, journalists, the surgeon general––all the players. . . . One evening I called my mom and told her about a research bill on AIDS that I had been working on that afternoon with two senators. She started laughing and said, ‘Do you realize that you just spent the afternoon helping to negotiate a bill between Senator Dole and Senator Ted Kennedy in the U.S. Capitol? Pretty high cotton for a girl from rural Colorado.’ You know what? It was – that’s the window and glass story.

“Because I had steered off the main road, I benefited from a total immersion in government, policy and politics. And when Senator Dole decided to run for president, my fellowship was extended, and I had the amazing privilege of being involved in a presidential campaign. If you ever have a chance, do it. It will be the most fun thing you ever do. I suppose I could have fretted about how off-course I was getting in developing my dermatology career, but my personal GPS told me I was getting an once-in-a-lifetime chance.”

Concluding the ceremony, Svaldi told the new Adams State alumni: “Your degree can open up doors you never dreamed of.

Dr. Drake told me she never dreamed she’d end up where she is. You can do it. You can do anything you set your mind to.”

some of adams state’s most accomplished alumni admit they were “late bloomers” academically. It’s thrilling, then, to imagine what might be achieved by students who are already highly focused on their career goals . . . students like the Porter Scholars.

Now offering full-tuition scholarships, the Porter Scholars Program allows ASC to target and recruit exceptional students. Dr. Matt Nehring, professor of physics and Chair of Chemistry, Computer Science and Mathematics, said the goal is to expand the program by recruiting 20-25 freshmen into the program each year.

“What I would like most is to see our programs’ growth with an influx of really good students. That’s why we’re excited about the Porter Scholars’ recruitment incentive,” Nehring said. “This would not only be good for our programs, but for their fellow students and the college as a whole.”

Now entering its third year, the Porter Scholars program was created in 2007 by the largest gift in the college’s history: 250,000 shares in E*TRADE Financial Corporation worth

$5.8 million. William ’51 and Joan Porter made the donation specifically to help mathematics and science majors “on the basis of their need and their ongoing academic achievement.”

With a degree in mathematics from Adams State, William Porter is chairman emeritus and founder of E*TRADE and founder of the International Securities Exchange.

The scholarships are renewable based on academic achievement and financial need. Porter Scholars can also qualify for financial assistance with focused academic programs and independent study. For example, last summer Jenny Ives ’09 attended Fort Lewis College's summer geology field camp, while senior Jessica Adams (see sidebar page 14) participated in a two-week program at the Karolinska Institute and Novum Research Center in Sweden.

The program’s initial First-year Experience Trip, last May, offered biology or geology credit for “Natural History of the National Parks.” A group of ten Porter Scholars explored Mesa Verde National Park, Canyon de Chelly National Monument, and Chaco Culture National Historical Park. This year’s First-year Experience Trip is “Science and Math of Roller Coasters in the Real World.” In lab work on campus, students will investigate the physics and mathematics involved by building model roller coasters. Then they will travel to an amusement park for hands-on data collection to compare lab results with "real-world" results. They will also visit government research laboratories to see cutting-edge research in Colorado.

Nehring said these experiences help the students bond with and mentor each other.

Twelve exceptional science and mathematics students were named Adams State College’s Porter Scholars for 2009; five of whom were among the 11 selected in the program’s inaugural year. Most Porter Scholars have their sights set on an advanced degree. Some have double or triple majors, and they are involved in a variety of college clubs, tutoring, volunteering, athletics, music, dance, and outdoor pursuits.

“These students are simply outstanding people,” said President David Svaldi. “Bill and Joan Porter's generous donation makes this all possible."

Harlan excited about potential of medicine The science faculty were a little skeptical when, as a prospective freshman, Amber Harlan told them she planned to become a surgeon. But they didn’t know Amber.

This was a girl who had undergone a series of operations to save and repair her feet, injured in a farm accident when she was five. No one at that time ever expected she’d become her high school’s Outstanding Female Athlete.

Now in her second year at Adams State and the Porter Scholars Program, Amber is not only proving herself, but holding herself to the highest standards. A cellular and molecular biology major contemplating a double major in biochemistry, she’s never gotten a “B” grade in her life.

Having spent so much of her childhood in hospitals “brought to my perspective how much medicine can help people – it’s revolutionary,” she said.

In addition to surgery, Amber is focusing on genomics and looking forward to a conference in St. Louis she hopes to attend this spring with Dr. James Bedard, assistant professor of biology. There she will learn DNA sequencing, allowing her to be a teaching assistant for a new course at ASC. This is an example of the special academic opportunities the Porter Scholars’ program supports.

“Genetics and medicine are one and the same. Bioinformatics and computer sequencing are the future of genetics. Everything will be based on genetic information,” Amber said. “The more you delve into it, the more interesting it becomes.” She plans to conduct her own genomic research for her senior thesis and present at the Tri-Beta competition next year. This year she does microbiology and molecular biology lab prep as a workstudy.

“There are so many opportunities here. I’m getting a lot of extra experience. It’s perfect preparation for medical school. That’s why I’m such an advocate for ASC, especially for valley students,” said Amber, who graduated at the top

of her Monte Vista High School class and is now an ASC Student Ambassador. She has also volunteered at the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center and shadowed physicians.

“Dr. Benita Brink is crafting me into the medical school candidate I need to be. My professors really care about me. You do better when you have a relationship.

They are always ready to help. It’s a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun.”

cover Adams ready to run with medical career Jessica Adams is certain the two weeks she spent last summer at the Karolinska Institute, one of Europe’s largest medical universities, cinched her admission to the University of Colorado-Denver’s physician’s assistant program.

Her experience in Sweden was supported by the Porter Scholars’ program and arranged by biology professor Dr. Margery Herrington, who participates in pancreatic cancer research at Karolinska each summer.

With a double major in cellular and molecular biology, Jessica observed ERCP procedures (endoscopic retrograde colangio pancreatography), and scrubbed in for a pancreatic whipple surgery and liver resection. She also gained lab experience extracting cells and preparing slides.

“I never expected to be able to do things like that, or to get aid like the Porter Scholars program offers. This was the first year I didn’t have to take loans,” she said. Another

important aspect of her experience was exposure to doctors and medical students from around the world. “One major difference I saw was that Swedish doctors are more focused on the patients. They don’t introduce themselves as ‘Dr.,’ they use their first names.”

She did always expect a career in medicine, however. “I always assumed I’d go to medical school, but when a physician’s assistant spoke at ASC about that field, I knew it was way more my style.” Her father is an internist, and her mother, a medical transcriptionist, so she has spent a lot of time in hospitals. She has a brother in medical school, as well.

Jessica appreciates the accessibility and helpfulness of all her ASC science professors. “Marty Jones is probably one of the most amazing teachers I’ve ever had. He made organic chemistry fun – OK, organic is not always fun – but it’s the way he teaches, his personality.”

Future physician’s assistant Jessica Adams transferred to Adam State to join the track team, having won three state titles and broken records in javelin during high school in Cimarron, New Mex., in addition to running on state championship mile relay teams and distance medley relay team. She placed third at the RMAC Championships in the 800m last year and was named to the Division II AllAcademic Team. As a senior this year, she ran cross country for the first time, and is proud of achieving a new personal record in every practice.

Sheader explores diverse academic interests Adams State’s Edward M. Ryan Geologic Museum was a strong draw for Kerry Sheader, who’s in his second year as a geology and art major. “This is a great collection, and Adams State has a superior geology program,” he said. “The Porter Scholars program really allowed me to afford coming here.”

The quality of ASC’s art department was also a factor in his decision. “I really like painting. Last semester I didn’t take any art classes, and that lack of a creative outlet really affected my brain. I started feeling more productive right away this semester, taking art again.” Another strong influence was his parents, Joe ’85 and Linda ’86 Sheader, both alumni.

“I’ve always liked Adams State. I can focus well in Alamosa,” said the Grand Junction native.

Established at ASC in 2004, the Ryan Museum includes 3000 fossils and 2000 mineral specimens from all over the world. As Working in the Edward M. Alumni can be part of an exciting future at ASC by supporting the North Campus Transformation project. “We have already raised more than a third of our target $3.3 million that would cover the entire project,” said Bill Mansheim, ASC vice president for finance and administration.

The first phase of the North Campus Transformation project is well underway (see story page 4.) Virtually every component of the Residences at Rex, Rex Stadium community facility, and the new North Campus Green may be underwritten. While the project is financed by a student-approved capital construction fee, gifts to the project will offset costs and allow more capital funds to support other aspects of the campus improvement plan, Mansheim said.

Giving opportunities range from sponsoring stadium seating for “Ole Mose’s Clan,” to endowing the entire stadium complex, complete with naming rights. This is a great vehicle for remembering a loved one or an influential Adams State professor.

New tradition honors John Spencer ‘62 ASC’s first Great Story on Walls in Halls was dedicated Dec. 3 in memory of John Spencer ’62. Spencer was honored posthumously at a reception in the Luther Bean Museum by a crowd of retired faculty, staff, and friends for his enthusiastic support and dedication to the college and community.

Adams State President David Svaldi said John is a great role model for students. "He was an ASC grad who had great personal and professional success. I am proud to dedicate our first Great Story on Halls in Walls in memory and praise for John Charles Spencer."

John’s wife, Connie ‘63, ‘66, emeritus professor of psychology, surveyed the room with a warm smile and recalled happy memories the two shared with so many in attendance.

Lori Laske, director of Alumni Relations, said it was fitting that John Spencer's story be the first of the Great Stories on Walls in Halls, which will hang in the Student Union Building. "His story will inspire current and future students." She said John, owner of a successful car dealership, was respected by many, including emeritus president John Marvel, for his compassion and leadership skills.

The new tradition is the brainchild of Dr. Robert Pollard ’61, who suggested the project as a way to honor alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the college. The Adams State Foundation will accept a minimum donation of $5,000 to dedicate a Great Story.

Book proceeds benefit Antonito scholarship “Food is important to share. I know I was successful in life – I gave and I shared,” said Janice DeHerrera, one of the 19 women interviewed in Carole Counihan’s latest book, A Tortilla Is Like Life: Food and Culture in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. Royalties from the book sales fund the Antonito Scholarship at Adams State.

Between 1996 and 2006, anthropologist Carole Counihan collected food-centered life histories from Hispanic-American women with long-standing roots in the Upper Rio Grande region. “Women are left out of so much official history. We need to recover women’s experience. How women produce, distribute, prepare, and consume food is a good way to understand the ‘women’s experiences,’” Counihan said.

Teddy Madrid ‘60, ‘69 and former ASC Foundation board member, said she is proud to have belonged to people who settled in Antonito. “The book gives women a voice and may bring interest to this area of Colorado.

We are not that different from others. We have the same American dreams and hopes for our children, and we love our food.”

Counihan is professor of anthropology at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. Music alumnus contributes building sign Walking around campus 40 years after receiving his degree, Peter Ciraolo '66 noticed the Music Building did not have a sign and decided to remedy that absence.

“The college gave me a career, and I wanted to give something to the college.”

A former music education major, he donated the money to have a granite sign made by the Adams State Art Department. “I am donating a part of me. I felt Adams State gave me a chance to be successful. I, in return, wanted to give something back.”

Dr. Tracy Doyle, associate chair of the Music Department, said the department is grateful for Ciraolo’s generous gift. “Peter has been a continual supporter of Friends of Music as well, providing varied musical opportunities for our talented students." He has donated to Adams State throughout the years, including gifts to the Alumni Association.

In his teaching career, Ciraolo said he modeled what he learned from his music professors. Four who particularly influenced and inspired him were Emeritus Music Professors Gladys Rugg, Glen Yarberry, Gordan Childs, and Maurice Skones.

A jazz trumpet player, conductor of the PC All Star Big Band (PCBigBand.com), and leader of a jazz quintet with vocalist, Ciraolo also taught high school for 33 years. He was music department chair and conductor and director of the Jazz Ensemble at Canisius College.

Ciraolo has played trumpet with the Lou Barone/ Gus Broncato Orchestra, Niagara Falls Symphony Orchestra, Orchard Park Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Joe Baudo Big Band, the Pyramid Swing Band, and the Bill Bailey Marching Band. He studied with Salvatore Panessa, Niagara Falls, NY, and Herbie Harp, professor of trumpet, Fredonia State University.

His groups have placed first in such competitions as the Villanova Jazz Festival for Non-Music Majors, the Kenny Award for best high school student orchestra, and the Niagara Falls Jazz Ensemble Competition.

He and his wife of 37 years, Gayle, live in the Buffalo suburb Hamburg, NY, and have one son, Eric.

1950s Larry Menke `52 and his wife, Georgina, live in Billings, MT. After having worked for Shell Oil Co. for 35 years, he retired in 1986. He was recently reelected to the Board of Directors for the West Daffodil Homeowner’s Association.

They travel a lot and enjoy the company of their family. He says, “Having 22 great-grandchildren consumes a lot of time!”

Richard Turney `54 (Colorado Springs, CO) was an aerospace engineer for 20 years, finishing with Martin-Marietta. He taught parttime in ASC’s School of Business for 14 years and retired in 2001. His wife, Thelma, passed away in 2006.

Bill `56, `62 and Joyce `56 Matthews (Litchfield Park, AZ) are “older, fatter, and deeper in debt, but still married!”

Joseph Albert `57 (Chino Hills, CA) taught 2 years in San Luis, CO, after graduation. After that, he signed up to teach 2 years in Anaheim, CA. He then went to Pico Rivera, from which he retired.

John McBride `59 (Benson, AZ) is well on the road to recovery following 2 heart attacks and quadruple bypass surgery last July. He and his wife, Marilyn, have lived in Benson for 20 years and enjoy the sunshine.

Robert Whiting `59, `63 (Honolulu, HI), after 39 years as a teacher and administrator at the Kamehameha Schools, retired to take on a second career as head of Holy Nativity School, an Episcopal elementary day school, where he’s served for nearly a decade. His wife, Marilyn, is a busy interior decorator. They enjoy living in Hawaii, especially in the winter!

1960s Virginia Spencer Clark `60 (Yuba City, CA) is still volunteering her spare time at the Christian Assistance Network/Interfaith Service Center in Yuba City. She is also on the board.

She enjoys being with friends and keeps active at church.

Frank VanBockern `61 (Lakewood, CO) is still working in financial planning, alternative investments, and commercial loans.

His wife, Edie, is still an office administrator. They hope to fully retire and travel more soon.

Lloyd Dunn `62, `67 taught school in Manassa and La Jara, CO, for 4 years after graduating from ASC. He then went to Little Rock, CA, for 21 years. He retired from teaching in 1985

and still lives in Lancaster, CA. He is close to 89 years old and is still enjoying life with his wife, 8 children, 42 grandchildren, 82 greatgrandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Ed `64, `84 and Georgie `62, `88 Norris (Florence, AZ) retired in 2000 from teaching in California, Minnesota, and finally Colorado. They live full time in Arizona and enjoy golfing year-round.

Horace Gene Hall `63 (Mesa, AZ) was a psychiatric social worker for 10 years. He went to Arkansas and became self-employed in earth moving working with heavy industrial equipment. At age 40, he retired and returned to Arizona. He’s been retired for the past 35 years. He and his wife, Sally, have 4 children and 3 grandchildren.

Eldon Leff `63 and wife, Elaine, live in Cañon City, CO. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1993 after 27+ years as a dentist and from private practice in 1997.

Frank Nance `63 (Chandler, AZ) worked for Black & Decker for 20 years.

He was the regional manager in Dallas for 7 years and has been the western sales manager for the last 8 years. He has 3 children: 2 boys in Arizona and a girl in San Diego. He still works full time running a manufacturing sales agency representing manufacturers that make products for the industrial, construction and welding trades.

Roger Trotter `63 (Casa Grande, AZ) writes, “Just getting younger and fatter. Love life and think of great times at ASC. Remembering the boys from Iowa and the trip from Iowa to Alamosa in Spring of 1961. Without Adams State, life would be much different— thanks!”

Ronald Crawford `64, `70 (Pueblo, CO) has been living in Pueblo West since retiring from teaching.

He bought a 5th wheel and has been seeing the eastern and southern U.S. He is having fun as an active Shriner, participating in many local parades and events as a clown.

Deanna (Shriver) Morris `64, `65 (Fairbanks, AK) still tutors, primarily math grades 2 – college. One of her greatest blessings was being able to help a young man earn his high school diploma at age 28,after he had been told in high school that he could not graduate because he was not smart enough! She says, “Seeing young people, as well as some adults, achieve success, especially with mathematics, is truly priceless.” Deanna’s youngest daughter, Holly `00, received her MA from ASC. Yvonne Moulton `65 (Goodyear, AZ) and husband, Dan, recently celebrated their 45th anniversary with a cruise to the Mexican Riviera.

Yvonne has retired from teaching but seems to be as busy as ever. She and Dan have both survived cancer and feel very fortunate.

Jon Trotter `65 (Globe, AZ) was in education for 40 years—32 years as a high school principal. He also coached a state champion wrestling team in Iowa and was the head wrestling coach at the University of South Dakota. He retired in 2005. He enjoys his back yard pool and his real grass putting green.

Bernice Martinez `66 (Oakland, CA) continues to work for the U.S. Department of Commerce, MBDA, in San Francisco. She travels extensively to Washington, D.C., working on a national basis on assisting minority-owned firms to obtain capital.

An avid lensman from the age of 11, he has close to seven decades of experience in photography. He is currently the owner and operator of his own studio. Prior to devoting all his time to taking pictures, he worked in the airline industry - 18 years with Frontier Airlines and 12 with Braniff International. In the course of his career, he published photographs, sold prints, and saw his work on the covers of two magazines, Exxon Air World and NE Magazine. He also contributed articles to The Pepper Tree and worked as a controller at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, TX, for a brief period following his retirement from aviation. He is happy to finally be pursuing his lifelong hobby on a full-time basis. He recently celebrated his 81st birthday and looks forward to continuing to write and take photographs.

Ron Duncan `67, `72 (Mesa, AZ) spent a year in Sargent school district teaching English after graduating from ASC. There he met his wife, Paula `73. He

has worked in education all his career. Paula received her M.Ed. in counseling/psychology from Boston University and worked as a counselor for the Army in Europe and at Ft. Knox, KY. They just celebrated their 41st anniversary.

They enjoy traveling, spending summers in Colorado, and snowbirding during the winter in Arizona.

Dennis Zaiger `68 (Colorado Springs, CO) is nearing retirement. He writes, “The Alaska cruise was a blast, except for the sea sickness!”

Mickey Kincheloe `67 (Myrtle Point, OR) played football at Adams State College for four years, and was team captain his senior year.

That year, he also won the Mountain Interscholastic Association’s heavyweight wrestling title. He was drafted by the New York Jets, and sent to the club’s farm team in Toronto, but was cut because of an injury.

After teaching and coaching for three years, he returned to Myrtle Point and joined the family business.

Beverly Barton `69 (Colorado Springs, CO) retired from teaching in 1996 and from real estate in 2007. She writes, “Retirement has given my husband and me time to travel. This past summer we were able to go on the Adams State College Alumni Alaskan Cruise.”

Charles Hammill `68, `69 (Medford Lakes, NJ) retired last year after 42 years teaching at Burlington College.

Mike Vecchio `68, `74 (Trinidad, CO) has been a fixture in Trinidad for more than 4 decades as an administrator, teacher, and coach in the school system. Now, after 42 years, Vecchio is retiring. Vecchio actually has already retired, although you wouldn't know it. He's currently on a 110-day contract as the athletic director at Trinidad High. When that's over, he's still going to coach golf at Trinidad High - both the boys and girls programs. And he'll still be hanging around football and baseball fields and gymnasiums. Most of all, Vecchio is going to be missed by the many co-workers and students that he touched over the years. Vecchio, who graduated from Trinidad High in 1964, went on to play basketball at Adams State College, then became a teacher and coach and eventually an administrator.

Gene Repola `68, `74 (Tucson, AZ) retired after 40 years in education as an assistant superintendent. He loves to golf, fish, hike, and spend time in Tucson and traveling. He still loves football and remembers good friends. He’d love to get in touch with the old gang.

Toni Griego Jones `70 (Tucson, AZ) was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to conduct a study on classroom practice in Mexico.

Bill McMosley `69, `72 (Salida, KS) is the director of bands and associate professor of music at Kansas Wesleyan University. He has just begun a youth police band in Salina, similar to the one he was in as a youth in Denver.

His Denver Junior Police Band participated in the Kennedy presidential inauguration ceremonies, and he remembers peeking over as he paraded by to see John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy. He reminisces, “We got in trouble because we were supposed to be looking straight ahead, but we got to see him and Jackie. I’ll never forget that.” The Kennedy presidential inauguration ceremonies were the highlight of a life-changing experience.

McMosley has spent the last 40 years conducting bands. He came to Kansas Wesleyan 10 years ago from a public school in Las Vegas, Nev.

1970s Arnold Gallegos `72, `74 (Highlands Ranch, CO) retired 2 years ago from the Englewood School District. He lives with his wife, Sue, and their two dogs, Oscar and Tyson. He has had some health issues, but things are looking better now.

He hopes to do volunteer work in the community, preferably with adolescents.

Dennis Karalfa `72 (Elizabethtown, PA) has been retired since 2003 from 35 years in public school music in Pennsylvania. He’s currently in his 6th decade of church music, having served as organist and/or choir director in 8 churches since 1956.

Rodger `73 and Cathy `74 Bell (Colorado Springs, CO) enjoy the alumni gatherings. Their lives are the same as usual.

They say retirement is getting closer.

They have a trip to Italy scheduled for next July, and they may just stay there.

Chuck Eaton `73 (Wichita, KS) was a senior buyer for Boeing Airplane Co. for 21 years and is now retired. His wife, Margie `73, has been a high school librarian at Maize High School for 32 years.

Mary Campe `76 (Lakewood, CO) went on a cruise down the Rhine River to see the Christmas markets in Germany in December. She is still active at Atonement Lutheran Church and looking for a job in the Lakewood area in customer service in the healthcare field.

Jan Spinuzzi `76, `07 (Pueblo, CO) has an exciting new job this year as a reading facilitator/coach at Franklin Elementary. She loves working with the teachers, as well as getting to know the students. She taught 5th grade last year, after teaching reading at the secondary level for 6 years.

Linda Armstead `77 (Colorado Springs, CO) retired last May and is enjoying every second of retirement.

She is also looking forward to the birth of her 7th grandchild in April.

Judith Kunugi `74 (Albuquerque, NM) is a physical therapist doing home healthcare.

She went to physical therapy school at Ohio State. She has been working 30 years in New Mexico. She loves to travel, scuba dive, and enjoy life.

Ernest Romero `74, `85 (Colorado Springs, CO) retired in 2005. He was ordained a deacon in the Catholic Church in 2000 and is assigned to St. Joseph’s Parish. He just finished a 7-month stint as parish administrator for Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. His wife, Pat Romero `71, `76, writes, “I participated in Teacher Corps at ASC. The two year internship was the best preparation for being a teacher. I had the privilege of working with excellent teachers in Antonito/ South Conejos. My 36 years of teaching were awesome!”

Daniel Lawrence `75 (Denver, CO) is a 2-time Peace Corps Volunteer,, having served in Ghana from 1975-77 and in Kenya from 199901.

Linda Vezzani Britton `76 (Colorado Springs, CO) says that she and her husband, John Britton `76, who passed away in 2007, had always considered their years at ASC as some of the most fun. They have 2 children, Jamie, who is the mother of their 3 grandchildren, Max, Jack and Ivy. Their son, Josh, is in San Francisco attending San Jose State for graduate work.

Tim Holt `77 (Colorado Springs, CO) retired from education and is now doing educational consulting in the areas of class management and instruction for credit through Adams State.

Bonnie Raylene Kahler `77 (Aurora, CO) works from home as a national account service manager for Avaya. She is from a long line of alums, and her daughter, Leslie, is now an ASC student.

Carla Mulkey `77 (Durango, CO) has been honored by the Colorado School Counselors Association as the best in the state at what she does. The award for best elementary school counselor in Colorado was presented at the Sheraton Denver Southeast in front of 450 colleagues. Mulkey graduated from Fort Lewis College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and earned a master's in

counseling from Adams State College. She started her career in education in the Pueblo system and later worked at Farmington Mental Health, before coming to Needham in 1984.

Mulkey and her husband, Jim, a retired oral surgeon, have two daughters, Amanda, 24, and Tonya, 17.

Albert Scarffe `77 (Lakewood, CO) is semi-retired and preaches one Sunday each month.

John Hantla `78 (Sioux City, IA) is the CEO of Wall Street Mission Goodwill Industries.

Carla McWilliams `78 was designated the Colorado Middle Level Theatre Educator of the Year by the Alliance for Colorado Theatre for her work at Euclid Middle School in Littleton.

1980s Jon Rowley `80, `86 (Colorado Springs, CO) left public education in 2008 after 28 years as a teacher and administrator.

He now works with high school students as an admissions representative for Johnson and Wales University. He visits Alamosa frequently and is pleasantly surprised at all the improvements to the campus!

Peggy Marolt `82 (Mancos, CO) worked for 15 years at Montezuma-Cortez High School as a high school counselor. She retired in May 2005 and now works at the Central Consolidated School District in Kirtland, NM. She is a K-5 elementary counselor and mostly works with Navajo children. She says working with a school population that is mostly at the poverty level is challenging, but also rewarding.

Ron Wilson `82 (Fountain, CO) is in his 25th year of teaching vocal music at Fountain-Fort Carson High School. He is also the “Voice of the Trojans,” announcing for the football and track teams and most special events.

Joe DiPaola `84 was named World Financial Group's President. Before taking on his new role, he served as Chief Agency Officer for Transamerica Insurance & Investment Group (TIIG), a marketing unit of Transamerica Life.

DiPaola brings a wide range of field and executive experience to World Financial Group -- as an agent and as a builder of an entrepreneurial sales organization. He started his insur-

Michael Jolly `84, `85 (Moscow, ID) and his wife, Jeanette, have two kids: Janay, 8, and Jackie, 6. Mike is executive director of Human Resources at the University of Idaho. Jeanette is an RN at a private practice in Pullman, WA.

Andy Fisher `96 and his wife, Tonya `98 have put down roots in Cañon City and recently welcomed a second daughter. He is the new drama teacher at Cañon City High School.

Andy began teaching about eight years ago at Calhan High School in east Colorado Springs after completing his bachelor’s degree in speech communications/technical theatre with a minor in marketing at Adams State College, where he met Tonya. He had no intention of ever going into teaching until Tonya, who is a Title I teacher at Skyline Elementary, encouraged him toward the field of education. Andy worked at Colorado College as an audio visual tech while completing his teaching certificate.

Shortly after moving to Cañon City, he went back to work on his master’s degree in theater production at Central Washington University.

Daughters Atalia, 5, and six-month-old Taiya make drama a family affair, often joining mom and dad backstage while they’re working on productions.

Doris Watson `88, `90 (Las Vegas, NV) just finished her 5th year as associate professor and graduate coordinator in the department of Sports Education Leadership at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She just finished guest lecturing at the University of the West Indies-St. Augustine in December. Doris works with Dr. Jerry Hughes `70 and Dr. Nancy Lough `86 at the university. 1990s Thomas Gonzales `91 (Commerce City, CO) was in a car accident last August that left him paralyzed from the waist down. After being released from the hospital, he completed graduate credits and received a Master’s in Administration. He continues his teaching career at Thornton High School and also his coaching career at Northglenn High School.

Dan Maas `92 (Littleton, CO) is CIO of Littleton Public Schools, supervising information technology for the district. He is working toward his doctorate degree. His wife, Loan `93, is an assistant principal at Cherry Creek High School. They have a 15-year-old son, Calvin, of whom they are quite proud. He is a sophomore varsity cross country runner at Littleton High School.

2000s Gabe Brubacher `00, `02 (Rifle, CO) brings three years' experience teaching ceramics and sculpture at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., to his new position at Colorado Mountain College's West Garfield Campus in Rifle. An adjunct professor of ceramics for much of the past year, Brubacher taught three courses this fall. A Colorado native, after completing two degrees at ASC, he moved to Irving, Texas, to get his master's in fine arts at the University of Dallas.

Travis Koppenhafer `03 (Mesa, AZ) begins his second year as wrestling head coach at Payson High School. Although Koppenhafer did not have previous head coaching experience when principal Roy Sandoval hired him in the fall of 2008, he was versed in the sport, having been an assistant for two years at Arizona State University. In 2007, he qualified for the Olympic Trials, but came up just short of making the team. “It was an awesome experience, I only wish it would have turned out a little bit differently,” he said. Koppenhafer says he gave up the collegiate scene in favor of prep wrestling because, “coaches are more instrumental in who wrestlers are and who they become.

Kindra Rounds ‘03, ‘05 (Center, CO) was named Teacher of the Year by the SLV Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Alamosa (BOCES). She teaches language arts/drama at Center High School, as well as ESL. Kindra is involved in the Building Leadership Teams program and as a guide for her Professional Learning Community at the school. She also co-sponsors KEY Club and Student Council.

She substituted 2 years for District #60 in Pueblo and then worked for them for 3 years at Corwin Middle School and Park View Elementary. She is subbing again and looking for prospects with PCC. Laura Cawley `07 (Fort Mill, SC) received her Master’s in Education-Instructional Technology from Wilkes University in January. She is a freelance photographer and head of the graphics department for a consulting firm.

David Mejia `07 (Alamosa, CO) is the Valley Courier’s new sports editor, replacing Lloyd Engen `87. After moving to the San Luis Valley in 1988, Mejia wrote for the Valley Courier during two intervals, from 1988-89 and again from 1991-94. Spending 11 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Alamosa, Mejia returned to

college to earn his degree in human performance and physical education with minors in English and history from Adams State College.

He has been working for sports information at ASC for five or six years and is currently an assistant ASC men’s basketball coach. In addition, he has coached Alamosa High School basketball for 11 years and junior high football many years off and on. He was the head coach for the AHS girls’ basketball program from 1998-2004. He also coached Centauri for three years for Larry Joe Hunt `83.

JoAnne Nashawaty `07 (Englewood, CO) will be getting her teacher’s license in May through Regis University. If all goes well, she will finish her thesis and receive her master’s the following May, 2011, also from Regis. She says, “Then…maybe I’ll retire when I am 102!”

Hughes played football from 1967-70 on a team that was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champ for three years. Lough competed four years on the cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track teams. Watson competed with Lough as a freshman, then quit.

in memory in memory Sarah Beatrice Merritt `36 passed away Oct. 26. She taught in Del Norte, CO, Boise, ID, and in Riverside, CA. She married Albert R. Merritt in 1944; they moved to Colorado Springs in 1946 and became business partners in Albert's office equipment business. During the ‘50s and ‘60s, Betty was active in service club work. Believing in the dignity and necessity of women's education, Betty has provided for an on-going scholarship, named The Merritt Scholarship, at Adams State for a worthy young woman entering the field of teaching.

Victoria C. Yribia `39 passed away Oct. 9. She and her husband, Bill, had been married 67 years when he died in 2007. While raising her family, Victoria taught in various schools in the Walsenburg/Huerfano area and in Denver.

She was also a social worker for the Department of Social Services in Walsenburg and Denver, and retired from the Colorado Department of Employment in 1981. Victoria was a talented musician who played a number of instruments, including violin and guitar.

Betty Bohman `50 passed away July 30 at the age of 90. Betty taught in Monte Vista until 1944, then became director of women's physical education at ASC. In 1950 she married Marvin W. Bohman, ASC’s assistant comptroller. She retired in 1978. She loved doing crafts, especially wheat weaving and crocheting blankets. She collected and made porcelain dolls, and even enjoyed a stint in clowning. She was a Camp Fire Girls and Cub Scouts leader who loved her mountain cabin.

David Wiley Hersch `50 of Port Orchard, WA, passed away Jan. 10. He began working for the Hersch family business and eventually moved into his field of choice in the U.S. Industrial Relations Dept. In 1962 he transferred to Seattle as a classification specialist. When the Seattle office closed in 1967, he became director of the classification program in the regional Office of Civilian Manpower Management at San Francisco. In 1971 he transferred to Washington D.C. as a personnel management specialist. In 1979 he returned to Bangor, WA, as the Northwest personnel representative. David loved his work and retired after 31 years, having received many awards, rewards, and honors for his work.

John Aretz `52 died Nov. 5. He taught 31 years in Colorado and California. He suffered from Alzheimer’s during the last part of his life. He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Olive Lingle Aretz `53.

David Robertson `52, age 79, died at his home Oct. 5 from acute leukemia. Dave was a basketball coach and math teacher at Sanford and La Jara, CO; Alamogordo, NM; Shadle Park H.S. (1962-82) and Gonzaga Prep (1988-92).

Dave retired from his education career in 1992. He was honored in 1979 and 1982 as the WIAA Basketball Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Inland Northwest Hall of 42 | A-Stater | Spring 2010

dr. john peter turano ‘47, age 87, of Loveland, Colo. passed away Dec. 18. He served Adams State in many capacities between 1962 and 1976, then was Interim President from 1977-78. Previous posts included Head of the Education Division, Dean of the College, and Vice President of Academic Affairs. He later served as Vice President of Academic Administrative Affairs for the Consortium of State Colleges of Colorado, and was an Accreditation Evaluator with North Central Association.

Turano was highly respected by his colleagues, including former President Dr. John Marvel, who said: “John Turano always placed the welfare of the student and the institution foremost in his professional performance. Anyone who is personally acquainted with Dr. Turano comes to appreciate his unquestionable ethics and professionalism.”

He was a member of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Denver, a board member of San Luis Valley Savings and Loan, and one of the developers of Rio Grande Hacienda in South Fork.

Fame in 1997 and the WIAA Hall of Fame in 1999. Dave was a broker with Interpacific Securities from 1982- 99. Very much a family man, he also loved to visit all of his former basketball players. He loved to fish (especially in Alaska), hunt, golf, and travel.

Jack Van Bibber `55, `59, age 77, passed away at his home Dec. 29. A former minor league baseball player, he and his wife, Margaret Ann Kidd `55, were married 56 ½ years. He was a teacher, coach, administrator, and mentor to so many people. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and bowling. He was a comedian, an arrowhead hunter, a member of the Monte Vista Elks Lodge and the Monte Vista Golf Club. He loved spending time with and pestering his wife, kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Lucille M. Gallegos `56, age 87, passed away Jan. 15. A longtime educator, Lucille taught in Weston, CO, and Compton, CA, until her retirement, when she moved back to Trinidad, CO. She enjoyed painting and sewing.

Anna Marie White `56, age 89, died at home in Del Norte, CO, on Dec. 23. She taught school at Bowen, Hooper, and the Center Elementary School, where she worked for 24 years. She belonged to the United Methodist Church of Center and the United Methodist Women and served on the board for the TriCounty Senior Citizens. An excellent cook, she loved to garden, spend time in the mountains, and spend time with her family and friends.

Thomas Yourick `57, `60 passed away Oct. 10 in Pueblo, Colorado.

Juanita Schmitt Taylor '58 passed away Sept.

4 after a 23-year battle with cancer. She taught briefly in Los Alamos, NM, and was married to John Taylor. She juggled being a wife and mother with her work as the County Clerk of Los Alamos for many years. She spread warmth and caring wherever she went.

Francine M. Lindsay `60 passed away Feb. 10 after a lengthy illness. Francine enjoyed her

time as a wife, a mother of two children, and homemaker. She retired in 1993 from her job as an accounts payable clerk for the Union Carbide Corporation.

Madonna MacGowan ’65, emeritus professor of business, passed away Oct. 2.

Joseph Bernard Murphy `60, `70, age 73, Glendale, Ariz., passed away Feb. 10. He taught and coached at Hoehne H.S. and Primero H.S. His special love was coaching track and field. He always regretted being unable to coach the American track team at the Pan Am games when asked. He served in the Army Reserves. He farmed and ranched with his dad for several years. In 1987, he and his family moved to Arizona, where he worked as an advocate for the seriously mentally ill in Phoenix.

Robert Joseph Birt `61, `66, age 77, Sterling, CO, died Dec. 8. A Corporal in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954, he became a counselor at the Sterling Middle School from 1964 until his retirement in 1991.

Lillian C. Stanton `61, `77, age 71, Aguilar, CO, passed away June 28, 2008.

Marjorie Jones `63, age 93, passed away Feb. 14 from complications of pneumonia. From 1959 until 1974, Marjorie and her husband lived in Alamosa, where Marjorie taught first grade at Central Elementary School. They retired in Loveland. In 1995, She moved to Albuquerque, NM, and lived there for nine years to be closer to family. She later returned to Colorado and resided in Denver.

Caroline Ann Rominger `64 died March 24, 2009, at the age of 77. Her teaching career included 28 years of service in the Del Norte and Monte Vista schools. She spent 24 of these years teaching junior and senior English. Her dedication to her students consistently surfaced in the frequent stories and gratitude expressed by former students. Caroline was also very active in many clubs, service organizations, and hobbies. She enjoyed

dr. jodine ryan, age 69, passed away Nov. 15 at her Alamosa home from lung cancer. She retired from ASC in 1997 as an Emeritus Professor of English. She served as the Communications Department Head from 1982-1990. She loved the San Luis Valley, the Zapata, and the Oregon coast. She cherished her time at “The Cabin” and on her mountain lots. She will be dearly missed by her former colleagues and many alumni.

At Dr. Ryan’s memorial, her former colleague Dr. John McDaniel, emeritus professor of history, told fellow mourners: “She brought to teaching an almost missionary zeal. In his Prologue to The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote of the young Oxford clerk: ‘And gladly would he learn, and gladly teach.’ This description clearly applies to Jodine.” bridge clubs, going on cruises, traveling to Hawaii, and hand crafting many family treasurers in ceramics. Caroline also loved flying in small airplanes. She had a great time flying all over the country as copilot to her husband, Vern.

Dr. Gene A. Carpenter `65, age 70, of Lancaster, PA, passed away Dec. 10 surrounded by family. He retired from Millersville University in 2001 after 31 years of teaching, advising, coaching, and serving as the Director of Men's Athletics and head football coach. He was the winningest coach in the program's history. He coached at ASC from 1966-68.

George Roby `66, age 67, passed away Nov. 24 after a 7 ½ year battle with cancer. George built Roby Properties, a successful real estate business in Chicago’s Austin area. He was also a former Chicago teacher and coach. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Tillie Guzman Roby `65.

Helen Wiler Sherman `67, age 99, died Dec. 14 in Salida, CO. Helen and her husband, Everett, joined the Colorado Springs Symphony in 1943, and later the Colorado Springs Municipal Band. They performed with the symphony for 32 years. At their retirement in 1975 they were presented with silver chalices as a special tribute from the symphony. Helen played organ at the First Methodist Church, was active in Bible study, and taught piano for several years. She taught vocal music for the El Paso County School District at Fort Carson for 20 years. After retirement, she pursued oil painting and continued her already accomplished knitting and handiwork skills.

Jack Rogers Ellison `68, age 86 of Pasadena, CA, passed away Dec. 7. He coached football and swimming at ASC, taught courses in driver safety, then earned his doctorate in Safety Education at Texas A&M. Until retirement in 1987, he was the safety coordinator for Mundy Industrial Maintenance. Jack remained a life-long athlete, enjoying swimming, softball, skiing, and horseback riding.

Annie Lide Gilbert Smith `69, age 87, of Bolivia, NC, died June 29. She retired as a teacher from the public school system of Pueblo County, Colorado.

Royal Dell Harshman `70, age 61, died Nov. 4 at his home in Long Beach, CA, after a courageous two-year struggle against colon cancer.

He worked for a chemical distribution company in Denver, then joined the Navy toward the end of the Vietnam War; he was commissioned and received a pilot's gold wings. After 7 years as a Navy pilot and flight instructor, he worked for an oil company and then for Sterns Catalytic, an engineering company. He later became an entrepreneur and ran his own company with his wife, Ginger, in the Denver area. They moved to Gresham, OR, in 1992, when he became financial manager of Ann Sacks in Portland. He was elected to the Gresham City Council. He moved to Long Beach in 2002 and took a position at Shorebank Enterprise Cascadia in Ilwaco. He continued to be active in public service by being elected to the board of directors of the Astoria Warrenton Chamber of Commerce, president of the Long Beach Lions, and a member of the Economic Development Council.

Gary Allen Wolf `72, age 59, of Brighton, CO, died Oct. 30. His career took him to Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Ohio. Gary and his

wife returned to the Denver area 5 years ago and joined St. Ignatius Loyola parish.

Thomas Lee Arellano `77 passed away April 24, 2009, in Denver, CO. He began his career in the San Luis Valley as an educational coordinator with the Colorado Migrant Council. He also worked as an educational consultant for BOCES, a counselor for Crossroads, and owned and managed the Tiny Tots pre-school.

In 2000, Tom and his family moved to Denver, where he worked as a Diversion Counselor for the Adams County District Attorney's office.

He later became a Certified Addictions Counselor for Anchor Counseling.

Dennis Kitterman `90 passed away March 17, 2009.

Sam Avalos, Jr. `94, age 55, passed away April 26, 2009, at his home in Colorado Springs. He was a teacher and counselor in Colorado Springs School District 11. He was best known for founding the Latino Club at Irving Middle School and establishing the Folkloric Ballet program at Palmer High School. He especially enjoyed his ski trips with the Special Ed students from Palmer High School.

Sam suffered a tragic automobile accident in 1973 that left him a quadriplegic. He fought back both physically and emotionally to excel beyond all expectations. He loved traveling, ATVs, mono-skiing, hand cycling, hunting, fishing, and bowling, but his greatest love was his students.

Donald Dean Graf `96, age 73, died in his home in Alamosa. He spent a lifetime in teaching and coaching and will be remembered by his athletes as a friend and caring leader. Never short of words, Don published several books of poetry and received numerous awards. He had four children.

ira s. zuckerman ’66, ’67, age 66, passed away peacefully at home in Napa, CA, on Jan. 17 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was named Adams State Outstanding Alumnus in 1988. He had an illustrious 35-year career in advertising and became a leader in the wine business, as well. A two-time winner of the David Ogilvy award for creative excellence, his contributions helped garner more than 100 national and international awards, including Clio, ADDy, and Grand Prix at Cannes, France.

As a founding partner and senior account services manager of Hal Riney & Partners, he helped create the memorable Bartles and Jaymes wine cooler campaign. His successes led to the creation of his own agency, Zuckerman, Fernandes & Partners.

In the wine country, Ira soon established his business life as general manager of Emilio's Terrace Wines; he also lent his wisdom to the boards of Oakville Growers and the di Rosa Preserve. Track and baseball were his sports, but not to the exclusion of the opera and symphony. Ira is survived by his adoring wife, Sandy, family members near and far, and countless friends and admirers. Men take 1st NCAA II Indoor T&F title

Hosting a national championship event for the first time was the ticket to success for the men’s indoor track and field team, which won its first NCAA Division II National Championship. ASC hosted the 2010 National Championships at the Albuquerque (N.M.) Convention Center.

Senior Aaron Braun, the RMAC and Central Region Track Athlete of the Year, led a 1-2-3-4-5 sweep in the men’s mile and took second behind teammate Brian Medigovich in the 5,000 meters. The Grizzlies took six of the top seven places in that event, capping the team’s first national indoor track and field title since its 1992 NAIA championship. Braun also anchored the Grizzlies’ winning distance medley relay team, finishing his career with 16 All-America honors and 6 individual national championships.

The Grizzly men also won the RMAC title, as Coach Damon Martin earned RMAC, Central Region, and National Coach of the Year honors.

Meanwhile, the Grizzly women won a conference-record ninth consecutive RMAC team title and finished fifth at the national championships. Sophomore Indira Spence set a national championship record to win the 60-meter hurdles in 8.05 seconds. She also set a school record with a second place finish in the 200 meters. She broke three of her own RMAC Championship records a fortnight earlier en-route to RMAC and Central Region Track Athlete of the Year honors.

Adams State will also host next year’s NCAA Division II National Championships on Mar. 11-12, 2011, in Albuquerque.

2009 Men’s Cross-Country National Champ Reuben Mwei

The Grizzlies again swept both men’s and women’s NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships. The men, who earlier defeated eventual Div. I National Champion Oklahoma State, were simply dominant in their 19th overall national championship effort.

Senior Reuben Mwei claimed the individual title, while leading the Grizzlies to six spots in the top 11. Ranked first throughout the year, they scored just 23 points at the national championships, the best team score since ASC’s “perfect score” in 1992. All seven runners earned USTFCCCA All-America honors. The Grizzlies also claimed RMAC and Central Regional Championships.

The Grizzly women were ranked fourth coming into the national championships, but got the job done when it counted, claiming a seventh straight and 18th overall national championship by eight points over top-ranked Grand Valley State (Mich.)

True freshman Alicia Nelson finished ninth individually, leading the Grizzlies to five All-America performances. Junior Kristen McGlynn had earlier won the RMAC individual title and conference Runner of the Year honors. The women won an RMAC-record extending eighth-straight team title, this one coming by a record-matching 49 points.

Women’s b-ball has best NCAA season The Grizzly women’s basketball team reached the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in school history. They won 21 games this season – the first time in 25 years – smashing last year’s NCAA Div. II era record (since 1992-93) of 14 wins. Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Kelly Kruger, the Grizzlies hosted a playoff game for the first time since 1992, as they qualified for the RMAC Shootout for the third straight year. They will lose just one senior, Misti Solmon, from their roster.

Two-time First-Team All-RMAC selection Vera Jo Bustos (right) led the team in scoring with an average of 15.9 points per game. She’s accumulated 1,282 career points in three seasons at ASC and is now in striking distance of becoming the Grizzlies’ all-time leading scorer next year. She also earned all-region and honorable mention All-America honors from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Second Team All-RMAC West forward Kendra Coveal averaged 11.9 points per game and led the RMAC in offensive rebounds.

Senior Arsenia Barksdale (left) became Adams State College’s first wrestler to earn four career All-America honors at the NCAA Division II level. He capped his career with a third place finish in the 125-pound bracket at the 2010 National Championships in Omaha, Neb. Ending his brilliant career with 103 wins, he is the Grizzlies’ first 3-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference/Super Regional Champion in six years. He joined senior teammate Joey Deaguero in winning individual titles in the tournament, hosted by the Grizzlies in Plachy Hall Feb. 27.

Deaguero capped his 3-time All-America career with a sixth place finish in the 157-pound bracket at the national tournament. Sophomore Josh Hensley also earned all-America honors with a seventh place finish at 141 pounds, as the Grizzlies finished 13th as a team at the national tournament after a 7-6 dual-meet season.
