Happy Spring to all our alumni, friends, and supporters of Adams State!

The alumni office just completed visits to alumni and friends in Arizona and New Mexico, where we also hosted President Tandberg and Director of Cross Country and Track and Field, Damon Martin, and Football Head Coach, Levi Gallas. Those trips are always a joy, when we get to interact and hear more about your great stories. We send our thanks to Coaches Martin and Gallas for joining us and helping spread the word to the alumni they have contact with in those areas.

It was surprising when we got back home to Alamosa from those trips and the weather was just about as warm. While it is nice to have sunny and warm weather in the Valley, this unusual pattern was a major topic during the annual Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center State of the Basin Symposium that explored topics about water resources within the Valley.

Dr. Paul Formisano, director of the Center, does a spectacular job hosting this event each year, and we were very pleased to have a Salazar Center founder and former ambassador, Ken Salazar, give a welcome. A symposium speaker, Nathan Coombs, helped alleviate some of our concerns about water resources by comparing this year’s lack of snowpack to the situation in 2002, saying that we got through that tough time and we will get through this tough time coming together just like we always have, and will continue to do.

Times have been difficult over the last year or so, with changes in federal funding for higher education and the tough Colorado state budget environment. We are grateful for all of the private philanthropic support that helped backfill that loss of funding. I have also been enthusiastically celebrating recent fundraising successes with newly created funds, including the Grizzly Summit First Generation Student Endowment, which is about $15,000 away from our $100,000 goal, and the Faculty Excellence Fund, which will help honor and recognize the amazing faculty who make it possible for students to write their great stories each day. We have numerous opportunities for alumni and friends to support the work of Adams State, whether you want to help the faculty that helped you or support those who are the first in their families to attend college. Feel free to reach out to me or a member of the alumni and foundation staff. We are eager to discuss your impact at Adams State.

Dear Adams State Alumni, Donors and Friends, As Foundation Board President, it is a pleasure to share great news with our alumni and friends who continue to support Adams State University.

The best and most often quoted reason for donating to our institution is “the students.” Either remembering the financial relief of receiving a scholarship and paying that forward; or as a retired professor, staff, or coach, who remains dedicated to the mission; or an institution that understands the importance of education – we all can agree, it’s the students – those individuals, teams, clubs, or classes that inspire generous donations.

A student is behind every dollar donated. Financial assistance helps pay tuition, funds travel to conferences, provides opportunities for paid internships or research, and sometimes can assist a student who finds themself with an unexpected personal emergency expense.

Through the generosity of individuals, families, institutions, and corporations, the Adams State University Foundation remained strong in 2025. Financial assistance continued with $1.33 million in scholarships awarded to 243 students. Four new funds to support student travel and clubs were established. And the Foundation received ten new scholarship endowments. Overall, the Foundation’s invested assets increased by $3.5 million, boosting the grand total to $41,969,401.

I appreciate the dedication of our Foundation and Alumni Relations staff, whose professionalism and genuine commitment to Adams State is a large reason the Foundation experiences continued financial growth. Executive Director of the Foundation, Tammy Lopez ’91, ’00, is invaluable. Wes DeVaul ’24 recently accepted a position outside of Adams State but set up a future estate gift before he left, see page 24. Our alumni relations team, Assistant Director, Uriah Cisneros ’10, and Director, Megan Maldonado, are out making connections far and wide.

For those of you who haven’t met Kate Martinez ’17 yet, please make an effort to do so if she reaches out to you. Kate was hired in the fall of 2025 as our Development Officer. Check out page 23 for an introduction to Kate. This entire team, as well as the Public Relations and Marketing team, report to Vice President of Advancement, Jake Rissler, whose positive energy is contagious.

Whether or not your name appears on the following pages, we are grateful for all our engaged alumni and friends. Those who follow Adams State social media, hire current students or seasoned alumni, who attend events on campus and smile at our students when they see them in the community, are an important part of the success of Adams State.

The Development Officer serves as a key fundraising professional responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts in support of the Adams State University Foundation and the University’s strategic priorities.

Kate grew up in the San Luis Valley and, like a lot of Valley kids, thought her future was somewhere else. “I left for the Front Range during high school and started college there, but life took an unexpected turn.” She eventually made her way back home and enrolled at Adams State. “I vividly remember crossing La Veta Pass on that trip and how it felt like I could finally breathe again.”

Scholarships, grants, and financial aid made it possible for Kate to finish her degree. As a low-income, nontraditional student, she would not have graduated without financial support. “I walked across the stage with my daughter in the audience, wearing my mom’s cap and gown from when she graduated from Adams State in the 1970s. That moment carried a lot of meaning—my great-grandmother, Harriet Dalzell Hester, was the first to earn a degree from Adams State, so education at Adams State runs deep in my family.”

Because Adams State played such a pivotal role in her life it felt natural to come back and be part of that story again.

So far, her favorite part of the job is the people. “This is the most supportive team I’ve ever been part of, and I genuinely enjoy connecting with alumni and hearing their stories. Each one adds something different, but familiar themes consistently come up: resilience, risk, success and together they form this incredible tapestry that all started here.”

Vice President of Advancement, Jake Rissler, believes Kate is a great fit for the role of Development Officer. “I am super excited we have welcomed Kate to the team. With strong ties to the Valley, she has deep connections to many alumni, donors, and supporters in the area. I know she is looking forward to meeting with alumni and friends of Adams State and sharing the impact they have on our students with their philanthropy.”

Kate believes supporting Adams State financially is critical, and not just for students, but for the entire San Luis Valley.

“The university is a cornerstone of this region. It creates opportunity, drives the local economy, and ensures students can pursue higher education close to home. At Adams State, students aren’t just numbers—they’re known, supported, and part of something bigger.”

Giving Back Colorado Potato Administrative Committee creates new scholarship The Colorado Potato Administrative Committee recently established a new scholarship for Adams State University students majoring in Agribusiness or STEM fields: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Math, and Mechanical Engineering.

The Committee will award $7,000 a year, which may be split between multiple recipients, according to Jessica Bradshaw, assistant director of the Colorado Potato Administrative Committee. She is a valley native and 2017 graduate of Adams State.

Since 1946, the Committee has funded scholarships for the Adams State Spud Bowl queen and court. That was discontinued due to changes in federal regulations.

“We thought this was a good time to revamp our scholarship. Adams State is very important to the San Luis Valley and the potato industry as a whole. So we designated the scholarship for students in degree areas that can support local agricultural,” Bradshaw explained. “We have a really good working relationship with Adams State and support it as much as we can. We are a sponsor for the Grizzly Club, and we currently have an Adams State student intern.”

To qualify for the scholarship, students must be registered full-time and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. They must be at least a sophomore during the award year (Mechanical Engineering majors must be a sophomore during the award year.)

DeVaul ’23 and Langdon commit to funding two scholarships “I always wanted a way to give back to Adams State and said if I was ever in a position to do so, I would,” said Wes DeVaul ’23. He and his wife, Amanda Langdon, recently established one scholarship and made a commitment to create another.

DeVaul was Manager of Operations and Annual Giving for the Adams State University Foundation for eight years, beginning in 2018. He is now the San Luis Valley Program Coordinator for The Attainment Network, which builds networks that transform education-to-career systems.

Langdon is the Access Services and Distance Learning Librarian at Adams State’s Nielsen Library.

The couple created the Sue & Deke Rushton Performing Arts Scholarship in honor of Amanda’s mother and late stepfather. The scholarship is for full-time students majoring in visual and performing arts.

Sue Rushton explained Deke was “very much the entertainer and musician” who played in bands and worked in radio broadcasting. He majored in theatre arts in college and performed in community theatre.

“When we met, he was playing in The Lazy Alien Blues Band in Salida; definitely the front man. But away from the spotlight, he was introverted,” she said. “Deke was a very generous, kind person – despite his persona as a big, hairy, tattooed biker – and a huge fan of theatre arts.”

In the 1970s, Deke and some college friends from Minnesota had bought ten acres on Slaughterhouse Creek near Bonanza, where they built seven off-grid cabins. He and Sue moved to the San Luis Valley in 2004.

DeVaul and Langdon also signed a letter of intent to create the Langdon DeVaul Family Scholarship to benefit transfer students through their estate plan.

Mary ’80 & Steve ’73 Russell honor their son through a planned gift to Adams State Mary ’80 and Steve ’73 Russell of Alamosa finalized an estate plan to create a scholarship in memory of their late son, Jesse Russell ’09. “We are so happy to support our Alma Mater and to help future students,” said Mary Russell. “Steve’s grandma, Rebecca Houlton, received an A.A. degree from Adams State when she was 89! Phoebe Russell, Steve’s mom, received her degree in 1985 at age 56. Steve was the class of 1973 and I was the class of 1980 and seven months pregnant with my son Nicky. Jesse graduated in 2009.”

Born February 20, 1985, Jesse died unexpectedly Christmas morning, 2017. Although he had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a neuromuscular disease, he did not feel he “suffered;” rather, he always embraced life and saw possibilities, not limitations.

He used a power wheelchair to navigate campus and wrote for the South Coloradan student newspaper and was one of the editors of the Sandhill Review literary book. Jesse graduated from Adams State Cum Laude in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English with a creative writing emphasis and a theatre minor. He was especially proud of his work on the Fahrenheit 451/ First Amendment Theatre project in 2008, for which he directed the play, My Name is Rachel Corrie.

Jesse developed his love of writing and composing early on and wrote poetry, short stories, plays, and music. He said, “Writing allows me to be expressive. It’s so important for a society to have writing. It connects people.”

“Jesse was a very creative and talented young man,” said Dr. John Taylor, Director of the School of Visual and Performing Arts and Chair of the Theatre Department. “I loved his sense of humor and his incredible insights about the world around him.”

Tammy Lopez, executive director of the Adams State University Foundation, explained, “By including Adams State University in your estate plan, you create an enduring impact that extends far beyond your lifetime. These legacy gifts provide vital support for our mission and help secure Adams State University’s future.”

The scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore resident of the San Luis Valley in any major with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Giving Back Dr. Van Pelt’s ’86 estate plan will continue support of two endowments David Van Pelt ’86, M.D., finalized a planned gift to Adams State University that will continue to fund two endowments he previously established. For the last 19 years, he has been in practice with Critical Care & Pulmonary Consultants in Greenwood Village, Colo., which provides ICU services to various urban hospitals.

In 2013, he created the ASU Emeritus Chemistry Professor Scholarship, and in 2019, the Van Pelt Salazar Center-Water Education Endowment.

“I had so many great chemistry professors. The Emeritus Chemistry Professor Scholarship honors multiple people, and it evolves to include future professors. I particularly appreciated chemistry professors Kay Watkins, Neil Rudolph, and Mel Armold, as well as Mary Meuller, who taught environmental science,” said Dr. Van Pelt, who majored in chemistry with a minor in biology. He earned his M.D. from University of Colorado Medical School.

“From the first time I met Dr. Watkins as

a high school student, he was always very supportive. He made a point of making sure I had the financial support I needed, including work study programs and scholarships. Having that special attention and encouragement really helped.”

Dr. Van Pelt said his fellow chemistry alumnus, Dr. David Clemmer, suggested he create the endowment to support the education arm of the Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center.

“As a rule, I always follow David Clemmer’s advice,” he joked. “The Salazar Center is an amazing organization supporting innovative ways to conserve water resources in the valley.”

In 2014 David Van Pelt, M.D., established a scholarship honoring Adams State emeritus professors of chemistry.

Family Bookshelf In 2025, Mary Van Pelt, ’81 released a new short story, Angela: Friendship at the Edge of an Abyss. “Angela was my friend because she understood the trauma of being locked up. She understood how reality cracks and a person falls into the abyss. After that, one’s perception is forever changed.” The story, written in the genre of creative nonfiction, uses literary techniques to craft a story based on actual events and is narrated from the perspective of a psychiatric survivor, a person who has experienced inpatient psychiatric treatment.

The chapbook is available at Nielsen Library, Alamosa Public Library, and Narrow Gauge Book Coop in Alamosa.

Adjunct Professor Eric Seiden ’17 plans for Adams State’s future “You can take the boy out of the state, but you can’t take the Grizzly out of the boy!” said Eric Seiden ’17, who now lives in Florida, when establishing his planned gift to Adams State University. He earned his MBA in 2017 and is now an adjunct professor in the university’s Prison Education Program (PEP).

He said, “As I got older and had a few unpleasant health scares, I realized that I’d like to share with the Grizzly community’s future.” Working with an estate planning attorney, he arranged to leave a portion of his estate to his alma mater, specifically, the Nielsen Library and the PEP. “To be honest, I was dreading getting my MBA, but I enjoyed my MBA experience so much that I decided I wanted to teach,” he said. “PEP works with incarcerated individuals who are trying to turn their life around and investing their own money to make that happen. There is a misconception that tax dollars pay for their education, but this is not true. I respect that effort very much, and I feel great being able to facilitate that growth.”

Seiden also values the assistance he received from the Nielsen Library as a student. “They were miracle workers. I never forgot how they found references and citations I’d have never found. Go Grizzlies!”
