President’s Letter: One of my daily pleasures is to look out the window from my second-floor office at Richardson Hall and see the beauty of the Adams State campus. This time of year, April into May, the views are particularly striking as the grass greens, flowers bloom, and the endless blue skies warm our days. But it’s quiet around here these days. The absence of our students makes it so. As you no doubt are aware, our students and faculty are finishing their spring semester away from campus, with all coursework being completed through our Blackboard online course management system. The absence of students, and the faculty and staff who guide them, is a reminder of these challenging times and how critical our students, faculty, and staff are – and how critical you are – to the life of the University. Adams State has stared down difficult times before, and we will do so again. We know it won’t be long before our students will be back on campus, back in the residence halls, back skateboarding along the walkway from McDaniel to Richardson Hall, back inside the classrooms, inside the labs, inside the music room, and the theatre building, taking care of their daily studies and preparing for the careers they’ve dreamed about. Nursing students, pre-med students, ag majors, and students who will become teachers and counselors will make their way back to Adams State. Our job is to make sure Adams State is there for them, and to provide both the financial and emotional support they will need to complete their studies and to advance their own lives. Your contributions allow us to continue meeting the needs of students and our communities. Even during these difficult times, we’re seeing believers in Adams State step up to create new scholarships to benefit the students of Adams State as you’ll read about in our 2020 Donor Issue. We are grateful to all the generous donors and supporters of Adams State. The contributions you make allow us to prepare solution makers, the people who will tackle the important issues of the day, whether it’s a novel coronavirus or another crisis that engulfs our society. Your contributions allow us to prepare the next wave of professionals who understand resiliency and grit and have overcome the odds because they are Adams State Grizzlies. The work of Adams State continues, less visible perhaps, but true to the spirit that embodies all alumni of this great university. When Feb. 17 rolled around and the Adams State Gives Day Talent show went live inside Richardson Hall, the phone lines lit up and pledges began to roll in. The magic on stage was drawing thousands of Adams State supporters to the internet to watch via a livestream telecast, including a group who gathered for an Adams State Gives Day Watch Party in Denver. By the end of the 90-minute show, Adams State had secured more than $30,000 in pledges from 46 donors. It was the highest single-day total of giving Adams State had ever experienced, and the buzz both during the show and after lifted campus spirits and brought huge momentum to the spring semester. Then suddenly the campus went silent. The novel coronavirus created a global public health crisis that spared no organization. On March 3, Adams State issued its first campus communication on COVID-19 to say it was monitoring developments and that any pending international travel would be cancelled. Then on March 12, following a state of emergency declaration by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, Adams State announced that all courses would shift to Blackboard online instruction following Spring Break. Soon after came the governor’s Stay-At-Home order and Adams State’s decision to keep all coursework on Blackboard for the remainder of the spring semester. It was a jarring transition – from the high of Adams State Gives Day to the somber reality of COVID-19. Through the leadership of President Lovell and the guiding hand of the Adams State Board of Trustees, Adams State will weather the storm. The absence of students from the campus has made this spring different but the spirit of Adams State and the strength of its alumni will carry the University to new beginnings.

Adams State has established a student emergency fund called Grizzly Persistence Aid to help with direct financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students for food, housing, technology, loss of wages and other documented emergency needs. First and foremost, on behalf of myself and the Adams State University Foundation, it is our sincere hope that you are all staying safe and healthy. In the midst of these uncertain times it is good to reflect on all the positive happenings and opportunities from 2019 and also to look forward at a bright path ahead. Over the past year, our donors have provided exceptional support for our students, in both unrestricted, designated and planned giving. Through your generosity, we saw the endowment increase to the highest point in the history of the Foundation. This allowed for the creation of new scholarships, continuation of other well-received new programs, such as the McDaniel Internship program, and increasing the Foundation’s staff. Last year we let you know that the Foundation anticipated increasing its staff with the hiring of a major gifts officer. We are very happy to have worked closely with the University administration to accomplish this goal and welcome Karen Wibrew, to our ASU family. Karen brings impeccable credentials and significant experience to the position and our Foundation team. The Foundation is looking forward with much anticipation at kicking off the Adams100 celebration, marking the 100th anniversary of our institution. President Lovell and the rest of the University administration have been working tirelessly on making this an exceptional series of events to mark such an auspicious milestone and kick off the next century of growth and opportunity at ASU. Once it is again safe to do so, I hope you will make a point of visiting the Adams State University campus to meet the students, take in a sporting event, enjoy a theatrical performance in the San Luis Valley Federal Bank Main Stage and find out about the events planned for Adams100. Come see that great stories do, indeed, begin here, or reconnect with the beginning of your own great story from your days at Adams. or Michael Patritch, Adams State was more than just a college, it was a place that made him feel like he mattered, that helped him flourish as both a student and individual. He hopes that his wife’s and his yearly theatre donations and legacy donation will give other students a chance to flourish. Some of Patritch’s fondest memories include Lynn Weldon, Ph.D., emeritus professor of psychology; and Dale Jeffryes, M.S.E., emeritus professor of speech and theatre. “Dr. Weldon would always greet me by name, which made me feel as though I mattered.” Patritch appreciated Weldon’s candid, unperturbable manner during classes and the fact that Weldon provided a safe space for students to speak their mind. “Mr. Jeffryes was a strict professor who shared his passion for theatre in a way that made the students excited about attending class. The Theatre Department felt like a family.”

The Joe I. Vigil Scholarship at Adams State University

Students benefit from COSI grants Eight counties in southern Colorado have assisted Adams State students through the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative. Adams State University partnered with Alamosa County, Conejos County, Costilla County, Huerfano County, Las Animas County, Mineral County, Rio Grande County (including the Sunflower Bank), and Saguache County, and Trinidad State Junior College Educational Foundation to provide scholarships. “I look forward to a continuing partnership between all the institutions as we move into the future,” Director of Alumni and Donor Relations Lori Laske said.

New scholarships established Daniels Fund Scholarship Adams State University has received a $45,000 grant from the Daniels Fund to provide Boundless Opportunity Scholarships to non-traditional students. The Boundless Opportunity Scholarship (BOS) is designed to benefit motivated non-traditional students who recognize the power of education to create a better life for themselves and their families. Adams State Director of Student Financial Aid Heidi Markey said the funding will be used to assist non-traditional students who have taken a different path to pursue their college education. “This support from the Daniels Fund will help this population of students with their persistence to graduation so they may lead productive and purposeful lives,” Markey said. These need-based scholarships are available to specific student populations including adults entering or returning to college, GED recipients, and veterans entering or returning to college. Manuel and Dolores Medina Memorial Scholarship The legacy of Manuel and Dolores Medina will live on through Adams State University. Barbara Medina, Ph.D., former Teacher Education chair, and her siblings recently established a scholarship endowment to honor their parents who valued education and service to community. “My siblings and I had conversations and decided Adams State would be a great partner and a way to ensure continuity of our parents’ generosity and value of education.” The Manuel and Dolores Medina Memorial Scholarship will assist Adams State University students with their educational expenses. The couple raised nine children on a small farm in Crowley County. “Our parents saw to it that we had opportunity for further study post high school,” Barbara Medina added. “They instilled in us, as young children, both intellectual curiosity and the value of hard work.” Manuel and Dolores Medina had three family members earn degrees from Adams State: daughter Emily Medina Trujillo ’70, and two granddaughters, Veronica Vigil ’06 and Mia Medina-Bohanan ’08. Adams State students from counties of Crowley, Otero, and Bent will receive first preference to receive the Manuel and Dolores Medina Memorial Scholarship. They must major in agribusiness, education, or sociology (social welfare), as well as meet additional criteria. Associate Professor of Music Matthew Valverde, D.M.A., was recognized for his outstanding work in education by the JV Educational Consultants A committee on behalf of the organization receives endorsement about outstanding faculty, staff, and administrators from all over the country and Valverde will be honored with the JV Educational Leadership Award for providing outstanding leadership within the field of higher education. “I was surprised and humbled for this recognition,” Valverde said. He called his father in Texas first after learning of the award. “My father was an attorney in Texas who was involved in equity cases. I was very proud to share with him.” Valverde recognizes each student brings their own unique experiences with them into the classroom and individual vocal lessons. He encourages his students to go beyond just learning the musical notes and words by building a sense of ownership in their assigned music. “I believe in giving them the space and process to work through their own joys and struggles.” He works with a diverse student population and examines everything through the lens of equity. “It helps make me a better teacher to think critically about how I teach.” Valverde also serves as the Inclusive Excellence Liaison and is chair of the President’s Advisory Group on Equity.

Valverde continues to perform nationally. He was recently in the second production of the new chamber opera Tienda by Moya/Vicent in Minneapolis and sang in Detroit with EXIGENCE, a Sphinx Vocal Ensemble highlighting artistry within Black and Latinx communities. JV Educational receives secret nominations that focus on educational and enthusiastic technique, contribution to student retention, dedication to a professor’s discipline through scholarly advancements, and more. “Matthew exemplifies excellence in education,” said Dawn Beckford, JV Educational Consultants. Valverde will receive his honor at the 18th Annual International Males of Color Empowerment and Retention Conference in October, 2020. According to the website jveducational.org, “JVEC offers a variety of consultation services to associations, colleges (schools), communities, foundations, higher educational institutions, nonprofits, nations and international collaborations to successfully implement and sustain strategies that lead to constructive student/faculty development, effective student and teacher leadership in education.” AStater 25

Adams State senior Stephanie Wolfe receives scholarship support No matter what roadblock or obstacle life throws at her, Stephanie Wolfe finds a way to overcome it and to keep working and achieving her goals. That perseverance has helped Wolfe thrive during her time at Adams State University, where this spring she’ll graduate with a degree in business administration and management. In addition to her own grit and determination, Wolfe has succeeded as a Grizzly thanks to a scholarship from the Adams 14 Education Foundation back home in Commerce City and matching funds from the Adams State Foundation. But beyond the financial support, the scholarships have created a dedicated team of cheerleaders rooting for Wolfe since she first arrived in Alamosa. “Everything that would cause someone to say, ‘I’m going to put my head in the sand and be done,’ she’s just bucked the challenge,” said Dale Mingilton (Class ’85), executive director of the Adams 14 Education Foundation, which formed in 1996 to support students in Adams County School District 14. “We just think she’s dynamic. She’s an incredible young lady. I’m very proud of her.” When Wolfe first began thinking about life after high school, she knew that paying for college would be difficult. She comes from a single-parent household and often worked 30 to 40 hours a week as a cook at Pizza Hut during her senior year at Adams City High School. A guidance counselor suggested she look into Adams State, which turned out to be the perfect fit for Wolfe. “The small class sizes made it really easy to integrate into college, which was nice,” said Wolfe. Adams State was also a fitting partner for the Adams 14 Education Foundation, which asks colleges and universities to provide matching funds for students who receive its scholarships. The foundation doesn’t just make financial investments in students. It also encourages them throughout their time in college with regular meetings and events. Mingilton and his wife, Teri, for example, have stayed in close touch with Wolfe over the years and they plan to attend her graduation (Adams State has cancelled its May 9 spring commencement due to COVID-19 public health concerns and is working on a new date for its spring graduates). “We should be watching over and supporting these young people so that if something slips and we have the ability to catch it, we can be there to help,” said Mingilton.

Last year, the Adams 14 Education Foundation awarded more than $220,000 in scholarships. High school students are evaluated based on their financial need, grades, community service or volunteer efforts, and their performance during an in-person interview with the foundation’s board of directors. “We look for students who are driven to be successful,” said Mingilton. Once they’re at college, scholarship recipients must submit their grades and their upcoming class schedule to the foundation, too, which gives Mingilton another opportunity to check in and see how things are going. Asking universities to contribute matching scholarship funds creates an additional layer of support. “It makes sense to have a partner (institution) because now there are two organizations watching out for this student,” Mingilton said. Wolfe has experienced first-hand just how meaningful it can be to know that someone cares. She’s been so inspired by her connection with Mingilton, his wife, and other members of the foundation’s board that she’s now considering a career working with students who are struggling to pay for college or just need a little extra mentoring and general support. During her time at Adams State, Wolfe has worked at Career Services and as a mentor to fellow students through Student Support Services. She’s also president of the ASU Pride Club and a member of the League of the Arts student group. Her advice to high school seniors getting ready for college? Get involved, get to know your professors and always, always trust your gut. “Don’t second-guess yourself,” she said. by Sarah Kuta

Dr. Evangeline Roybal Sena ’57, ’61 portrayed Maria Josefa Jaramillo Carson, the third wife of Kit Carson in a Chautauqua performance presented by the Los Alamos Historical Society on March 10, in Fuller Lodge. Sena grew up on a farm in the San Luis Valley and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Adams State. Approximately two decades later, she earned a Ph.D. in administration and supervision from the University of Colorado in Boulder. She and her husband, Val, were recently awarded the Premio Hilos Culturales Award for their longtime contribution to the traditional arts of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Better known as Vangie, Sena was drawn to Maria’s story because of their shared Hispanic heritage. Her ancestors, like Maria’s, made the long journey in the same caravan with Don Diego de Vargas in 1693.

Hurb Letterly ’60, ’68 accidently barged in on the ASU Alaska Cruise with his traveling buddy. Since then, he hasn’t traveled as much as he would like although he did spend a couple of months in China. “Going solo allowed me to visit places of interest such as the Marco Polo Bridge in Beijing, Macau and Kunming. A lot of history, Burma Road and the Silk Road plus the Yangtze River and all of it had beautiful scenery.” His only recent trips have been to Taos to supply the gallery where he sells his paintings. Painting watercolors keeps him busy after he got out of the ship building business a few years ago. “I have two dogs (children) that occupy my time.” Working on his house also keeps him motivated since his wife passed away. “I was asked by the city of Aurora if I would consider teaching art class, so as you can see, skills acquired at Adams State are put to use in later years.”

Harvey E. Billington ’58, ’65 will always rate Adams State as an outstanding choice, where he received a full-ride. While working on his master’s degree he helped teach band camp to pay for his tuition. He had a very successful career as a teacher, high school principal, and for the last eight years, as a superintendent. He fully supports Adams State. Gary Antisdel ’59, ’63 lives in Cedaredge, Colo., on the golf course. He plays golf four days a week with the Century Club, about 30 to 35 members. Bank ’59 drove out in his 1938 Ford two-door, broken-down sedan with friends Dick Mayur ’53 and Joe Zanski from Niagra Falls, N.Y., in September 1951. A big snow storm hit Colorado Springs on September 25 and they had a hard time getting through to Adams State. Although Richard attended colleges back east for the next eight years, he finished his last year at Adams State in 1959. Richard and his wife, Norma, have two sons. Brian is working for LA County Sheriff’s Canine/SWAT teams and Mark lives in Minnesota.

What have you been up to since graduation?

Bradford Tate ’60 lives in Boca Grande, Fla., for six months of the year and in Lawrence, Kan. for six months. He is a retired educator, after 52 years, with 37 of those years teaching high school. He and his wife, Susan, have four children. Stan Nelson ’61, ’65 retired from farming, ranching, and rodeoing in 1991. He and his wife, Jean, have been married 60 years. “We have hung around close to the house since retiring and all is well.” Carl R. Snow ’61, ’64 and Teddy Snow (Wilson) ’63 celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary November 25. “Retirement has been great!” Elbert Detwiler ’63 and his wife, Anna Mae, are “firmly planted” on the eastern shore of Maryland between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. “Nothing like lofty Colorado.” Altogether he spent 15 years in Colorado and will always remember the features that supported his name. In Colorado there is a county named Elbert, a town named Elbert, and a lake and a creek named Elbert, and the highest mountain peak in Colorado is named Elbert (14433 ft). “I’m 83 now and will always love Colorado and Adams State.”

Eldon R. Leff ’63 and his wife, Elaine, live at 459 Evelyn Dr, Canon City, Colo. “Thanks to Adams State and a great education, I had a successful career in the Navy for 27 years and in a private practice for four years as a dentist.” Eldon retired in 1997 and enjoys fishing, hunting, bowling, and the Gideon Ministry. “Life is good!” He would love to hear from friends 719-276-9458 or Dr. Eldon R. Leff, at the above address. Gerald Spadafore ’64, ’65 was hired as a counselor in the Lincoln Public Schools in Lincoln, Nebraska. He completed his Ed.D. at the University of Nebraska in 1970 in education psychology. “Many thought Adams State was the Harvard of the west.” Upon graduation, he accepted a position as an assistant professor at Idaho State University in school psychology. He retired as professor emeritus in 1999 and moved to Temecula, Calif. “My wife, Sharon, and I are enjoying retirement. We play golf and jog and enjoy the sunshine. There will always be a special place in my heart for Adams State.” Jerry Schloffman ’65, ’70 just celebrated a milestone, turning 80-years-old. His health is very good, and he still plays golf, hunts and fishes and, of course, does yardwork. His family is doing well and his kids and grandkids are successful. He enjoys his involvement with the Alumni Association and serves on the scholarship committee. “2020 makes 55 years since graduation (wow). I am looking forward to homecoming and all the celebrations. If I had to go to school again ASU would be the place!” Robert Valdez ’66 has been retired for 27 years after serving for 33 years as school teacher, counselor, and principal in New Mexico. He and his wife, Ernestine Montoya Valdez, have one son, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Currently, he is “knapping”, working with rocks, making arrowheads and knives using obsidian, agate, jasper, and various other stones. He also is busy with New Mexico Search and Rescue where he volunteers one week of each month. Sharon “Tex” Worsham Barker Walker ’66 remembers quite vividly the day President John F. Kennedy was shot on November 22, 1963. “I had lunch in the campus cafeteria and headed back to the dorm to get ready for my 1 p.m. class.” A fellow student told her about the assassination. Classes and activities were canceled. Flags were lowered. “All of the second-floor gals gathered around the black-andwhite television for the entire weekend.” She retired after 30 years of teaching business and art in Texas Public Secondary Schools.

Aaron Sahr ’68 appreciates all Adams State does in providing a worthwhile and meaningful education for all students. He believes the University did much more for him than academic and career preparedness. “My beliefs were solidified about what positive learning and living values can be gathered for passing onto others without even much expenditure of effort. The only requirement is just being a genuinely good example for others to witness. Thank you, Adams State.” Donald Wolfe ’68 and his wife, Marty, retired in Central North Carolina, after 32 years of teaching and coaching in Colorado, and two years in Ohio. “I still have great memories of Adams State and my track experiences with Coach Joe.” Thomas W. Budd ’69 and Georgette Lee Klein Budd ’69 both graduated from Adams State with degrees in education. Thomas was employed as an educator for 20 years and Jetta for 37 years. Georgette (Jetta) passed away on August 29, 2019 after a brief illness. “I miss her daily.”

•1970s Jerry Crisci ’70 and Patricia (Southland) Crisci ’70 married in 1970, became teachers then restauranteurs in NYC Queens for over 46 years. Their 50-year anniversary is August 16, 2020. “We visit Colorado often and it is like our second home.” They have three children and six grandchildren. “Adams State made all this possible.” Linda Swanson ’70 is doing fine after having an aortic valve transplant on Nov 17, 2018. Unfortunately, her old friend and once Casa Bonita (1966) roommate, Doris O’Leary, lost her third battle with cancer on Nov 3, 2019. “She is greatly missed.” Douglas Hartman ’71 is a retired band director after 41 years of teaching. He met his wife, Karen, at Adams State. They have been married for 48 years and have fond memories of Adams State. Gary Venturi ’71 was a physical education teacher for the Newark Public Schools system from 1971 until retiring at age 60 in 2008. He and his wife, Sadie, have one son, Jason, who lives in Florida and is presently working as a real estate manager. He is also active with a second career in the home improvement business.

Susan Lehmann (Acheson) ’72 and Steve Lehmann sent Adams State a one-time gift, for the time Steve took a few baseballs for practice in the late 1960s. “I am not usually a thief.” Steve wanted to clear his debt and conscience for taking the balls. “I’ve thought of it 20 to 30 times over the years and I wanted to make it right.” David Pennington ’72 has been living in Arlington, Texas, since 1974. He had a 39-year career in the property tax field, retiring in 2013 as the director of Legal Services for Dallas Central Appraisal District. He was president of the Texas Association of Assessing Officers. He and his wife, Linda, have been married 41 years and have two children and five grandchildren. “I have fond memories of Alamosa and FAC (Friday Afternoon Club) at the Goal Post.” Currently, he enjoys exercising, helping with the grandchildren and traveling as much as possible. He also got back into property taxes part-time by serving on the Appraisal Review Board in Tarrant County, Fort Worth. Dwight Proctor ’72 is retired and enjoying it. “God Bless Adams State University.” Gloria Santistevan-Feeback ’72 and Galen Santistevan-Feeback ’64 are retired teachers in Pueblo. Galen works part-time repairing instruments and is a very active musician with the Shriners and also a community band. Gloria serves on a local credit union board of directors and enjoys golf, pickleball, and Mah Jong. “We both love traveling and were in Moscow in 2019.” Linda Shelley ’72 taught art from 1972 until 1974 at Mesa Senior High, in Mesa, Ariz. She worked in marketing in Denver, Colo., in 1975. Linda joined the Army in the summer of 1975 and trained to be a transportation and logistics engineer, and continued in active duty until 1985. From 1985 until 2001 she was in active reserve. In 2001, she volunteered to go back on active duty for four years after 9/11. She retired Dec 2005. While in the reserves, Linda also served as a co-president of a German-American Charity Organization called DeutschAmerikanisches Frauen Gibbets Kreis, to raise money and promote German-American friendship. She also served as director of the Manheim-Healey-Womens USO. “Now as a retiree, I am pursuing my lifelong passion of painting and travel.”

Peggy (Hendricks) Ward ’72 graduated with a business major, with music and accounting minors and received an MBA from Colorado State University in 1979. She worked in wealth management with Paine Webber & UBS Financial Services for 38 years and retired in 2018. Milton J. Place ’74 just finished his 79th season of coaching cross country and track. He is the boys cross country coach at Medina High School in Ohio. He retired from teaching in 2009 after 35 years. He and his wife, Lena, enjoy northeast Ohio living. Their daughter, Annaliesa, is a world-class violinist and recently appeared in Bruce Springsteen’s film documentary “Western Stars.” Their son Anthony is a building contractor and remodeler. Veronica (Zaremba) Hill ’75 believes Adams State truly began her education journey. Her professors and instructors provided her with the educational environment to excel in her studies. “It was through their encouragement and guidance that I continued my educational pursuits.” She received a Master of Science in recreation administration at Cal State, Long Beach in 1989 and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Arkansas in 2012. “Thank you ASU, especially Dr. Joe I. Vigil.” Mark Weeks ’75 is easing into retirement following decades in corporate financial management and hopes to find more time for travel with his wife, Susan. Once an Adams State cross country and track athlete, Mark continues his involvement with running through coaching and competition. Recent competitions have included a win at the USATF Masters Steeplechase in 2017, followed up by a fourteenth-place finish at the World Masters Track and Field Championships in Malaga, Spain in 2018. Barb Motes ’76 is enjoying retirement!

•1980s Peter Zimmerman ’80 suffered a massive stroke in January 2016. He is still in speech and physical therapy and doing much better. He still has issues with aphasia, the ability to write, read, understand, and talk. He was the senior director of Wolf Trap Foundation of Performing Arts from 1999 until 2016.

•1990s Tom Bruscino ’99 became a professor at the US Army War College at Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Pa., in 2017.

• 2000s Tracie Race ’03 became a partner at Moor Messina Webb LLP, the firm she has worked at since 2005. Derrick Martin ’04 recently accepted a position as the principal for Turner Middle School in Berthoud, Colo. He earned a master’s degree in secondary education from Adams State. Chris Carrillo ’06, ’10 was selected as Otero Junior College’s Athletic Director. He has been Rattlers Head Baseball Coach for the past nine years. He completed his bachelor’s degree in sociology at Adams State in 2006 and his master’s degree in physical education in 2010. Chris was Otero’s assistant coach for four years prior to being named head coach and has been at Otero for a total of 13 years as a coach. During his tenure as the head coach at Otero, Chris placed 61 players to four-year institutions including five to Division I schools and one player went on to play for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2015. He has coached two Athletic AllAmericans, 41 Athletic All-Region Players and eight Academic All-American student-athletes. Chris said his philosophy is that excellence is a result of hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and discipline.

•2010s Annette Lambrecht ’10 is in her 15th year of teaching in RE-1 Valley schools, and she is in her fourth year at Sterling High School. She graduated from Adams State with a master’s degree in educational leadership. Lambrecht is currently co-director of the RE-1 Valley Children’s Chorale, and she is in her sixth year of conducting the Windsong Chorus, the local Sweet Adeline chapter. She is a certified Frontline Sweet Adeline Chorus Director. In 2017, at the International Sweet Adelines Competition in Las Vegas, Lambrecht was the sole recipient of the Sweet Adelines International’s Music Educator Award, NAfME, for National Association for Music Education. Vera Jo Bustos ’11, former University of New Mexico women’s basketball director of operations, was recently appointed to the New Mexico Athletic Commission.

Dorothy Fredrick ’12 is the curriculum, instruction and training coordinator for the Community Partnership for Childhood Development, the agency administering Head Start programs in the Colorado Springs region. She oversees curriculum development, professional development and new staff training for 69 classrooms. Daniela (Duran) Mannerberg ’17 a San Luis Valley native, has been a radiology assistant with SLV Health Imaging Department since 2018. Daniela will complete her education to become a sonographer through the online Washburn University program in the spring of 2020. SLV Health senior leadership created financial resources in an educational fund to support “grow your own” endeavors. This resource supports Daniela’s desire and passion for further education in the imaging field. Phong D. Nguyen ’17 created and teaches an eight-week long front-end web development workshop, “Coding your future,” that targets inmates at the Second Chance Center out of Buckeye, Ariz. Students learn skills that enable them to complete high-tech jobs as entry-level front-end web developers. It is their goal to contribute to the reduction of recidivism by providing career opportunities through targeted training. This is the first coding program offered to inmates in the Arizona Department of Corrections. Phong was also accepted into the TARM graduate program at Colorado State University. He plans to continue on to the MAS program at CSU specializing as a data scientist. Paris Duhamel ’18 was named the assistant director of Parks & Recreation Department in Farmington, N.M. She plans to help the director grow the department. “I am excited to play a larger part of the community.” She is also a firefighter on the Farmington Fire Rescue Department. She and her fiancé, Fire Rescue Capt. Scott Baxter are expecting their first child in a couple of months. Duhamel grew up in Colorado and earned her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Adams State. This past year she also coached pole vaulting at Mt. Blue High School.

In Memoriam Their legacies will live on through generations of college graduates

D

uring his 32 years as Adams State Executive Director of TRiO programs, Mike Garcia impacted the lives of thousands of individuals. His commitment to his profession encouraged countless first-generation students to pursue a college education. Following his retirement in 2008, Mike continued his commitment to his alma mater by serving on the Alumni Board. On Feb. 28, Mike passed away at this home in Pueblo. He is survived by his wife, Carla, and children David and Diana. Mike started his career in the Upward Bound program as an undergraduate student, serving as an instructor for a Basic Skills Course. As a graduate assistant, he worked with the College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP) as a tutorial coordinator, supervising 30 academic tutors and the overall scheduling of tutorial services for 100 college students. These experiences helped him step into the position as project director for the Upward Bound Program in 1976, and he became the executive director for the TRiO Programs in 2003. His dedication to the students continued throughout his career. Mike initiated the Math and Science Summer Scholars Programs and the Student Support Services Scholars Program. Both programs continue to support enrollment and retention of college students at Adams State.

dams State University lost a dear friend and constant supporter when Don Stegman, emeritus professor of English, passed away March 15 at his home in Alamosa. Don enjoyed telling of his early history with Adams State. A graduate of Monte Vista, Don planned on moving on “to a bigger town.” However, handing him a fifty-dollar bill, his supervisor at the local Kelloff ’s Market said, “Try college.” The first in his family to earn a college degree, he received the 2011 Billy Adams Award, the highest honor given to an alumnus, and in 2015 was inducted into the Adams State Educators Hall of Fame. “Don represented the ideals of Billy Adams by championing the value of a college in rural southern Colorado,” said Director of Alumni Relations Lori Laske ’91, ’01. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1961, Don taught high school in Kansas. He returned to Adams State to complete his Master of Arts in 1964, and then joined the Adams State English Department and retired in 1993. 34 AStater

Current Adams State TRiO Director Angelica Valdez, ’98, ’08, said Mike stood up for students that others were ready to give up on, only to see that same student thrive and succeed in college. “I cannot convey the number of people Mike has impacted, but I can only imagine that his impact will ripple for years to come.” He served on the faculty of the Pell Institute; was a founder of the ASPIRE Association and the Colorado TRiO alumni association; and served as the site coordinator of Colorado Alliance for minority participation. He was recognized as an exemplary director by the U.S. Department of Education. During his career at Adams State, Mike served on the president’s administrative council, and was chairperson of the retention committee, which successfully conducted a valleywide conference bringing together faculty of SLV schools and Adams State faculty. In the community, Mike served in numerous leadership positions, including eight years as president of San Luis Valley Chapter of the Latin American Foundation, board member of the SLV Comprehensive Mental Health Center, board member of the SLV Coalition of Student Service and the SLV Council of the Arts. Mike earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education in 1973, and his Master of Arts in guidance and counseling in 1977.

Never one to forget friends and colleagues, Don nominated Outstanding Alumni recipient James Biundo, Ph.D. ’59, ’62 and his former mentor the late Don Brooks, emeritus professor of English, to the 2012 Educators Hall of Fame. In 1996, Don published “Mostly Marvelous: An Overview and Oral History of Adams State College from 1966 through 1981.” The book began from where former Adams State associate professor Beryl McAdow had left off in the first two recorded volumes. Don served on the Adams State Alumni Association Board of Directors, attending local reunions and serving as ambassador at out-of-state town gatherings. He also was active with the Adams State Grizzly Club as an athletic booster, and he served as a school board member for Alamosa Public Schools from 1979-1987. He established a scholarship in memory of his late wife, Joyce Stegman ’77, who died in 2005. Don was a member of the Alamosa First United Methodist Church. His family is planning a service in Alamosa at a future date.
