To steal a quote from Mark Twain — the rumors of Adams State University's demise are greatly exaggerated.

In many ways, Adams State is doing better than ever. In spite of the recent recession and resulting state funding cuts, we have achieved record enrollments and an unprecedented transformation of our campus. This past fall we admitted our second largest freshman class ever and broke another record for graduate student enrollment. Next fall David Svaldi we begin our first Ph.D. program.

I am not surprised by this success. It was the result of a careful strategy that addressed Adams State's most pressing needs: enrollment and campus improvement.

Over the last decade, state funds for facility maintenance and capital construction virtually vanished, on top of a 30 percent drop in state general fund support since 2008. Our campus was ugly, run down and unattractive — not exactly an asset in student recruitment. So we decided to invest in our campus ourselves. In 2008, our students approved a capital construction fee that has financed $65 million in campus transformation. The first goal was to expand and improve student housing, followed by extensive renovations to academic buildings.

Simply increasing tuition to offset state cuts was unacceptable, because the majority of Adams State's students are low income and/or minority. We are committed to remaining affordable for the people of rural Southern Colorado. We minimized tuition increases by drawing upon budget reserves and increasing enrollment of out-of-state students and graduate students, who pay higher tuition.

Our plan is working. Over the last six years, we've increased enrollment of Colorado resident undergraduates by 14 percent — 2 percent better than the statewide average. Our graduate enrollment grew a whopping 98 percent, compared to a statewide average of 8 percent. Enrollment of out-of-state undergraduates grew by 23 percent, 5 percent above the statewide average. The number of degrees we awarded increased 42 percent during the same period.

Over the last five years, this enrollment success produced $4.7 million in new revenue from graduate programs and $2 million more in revenue from undergraduate non-residents. Adams State University is poised for more growth.

None of this means financial challenges are lessening, however. Federal financial aid may be reduced again. The Governor's plan to restore higher education funding — which we applaud — will still fall short of 2008 levels. Adams State always has been, and will continue to be, reliant on consistent state support.

Adams State has withstood much adversity over the last 90 years. But are we going out of business? Check back in 2105.

Civil Rights leader takes the struggle to the classroom “Mathematics is the language of the twenty-first century,” said Robert P. Moses, founder of the Algebra Project and nationally recognized Civil Rights activist, during his visit to campus as part of Martin Luther King Jr. Week.

His presentation, “Quality Public School Education as a Constitutional Right,” engaged the audience in activities using “street” language to explain mathematics. That evening, Moses had the audience repeat the US Constitution after him.

“No one can take ‘We the people’ away from us,” he emphasized, noting people have fought for human rights throughout history. Moses asked those present to continue the efforts and move forward, standing up for all who struggle.

In 1982, Moses used his MacArthur Foundation Fellowship to found the Algebra Project, which uses mathematics as an organizing tool to ensure quality public school education for every child in America. Its unique approach to school reform intentionally develops sustainable, student-centered models by building coalitions of stakeholders within local communities, particularly within historically underserved populations.

The Harlem-born Moses earned his B.A. from Hamilton College and an M.A. in philosophy from Harvard University. He was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement as a field secretary for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). In 1961, Moses initiated SNCC’s Mississippi Voter Registration Project and was appointed its director in 1962. He helped to lead the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) into the Mississippi Summer Project (1964 Freedom Summer), which parachuted the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) to the National Democratic Convention in Atlantic City.

Alumni lead trustees to next level Two Adams State alumni, Arnold Salazar ‘76 and Tim Walters ‘73, were elected chair and vice chair, respectively, of the Board of Trustees for Adams State University. Both will serve two-year terms in those posts.

“I’m honored to have been appointed to Adams State’s Board of Trustees. ASU is a critical component to the San Luis Valley’s livelihood. The Trustees, administration, faculty, and staff have done an amazing job moving ASU forward.

I am proud to be part of that continuum,” Rogers said.

Wright is Executive Director of the Alamosa County Economic Development Corporation and Director of the Kathleen Rogers Alamosa County Chamber of Commerce. He previously was general manager of Stop ‘n Shop convenience stores in Alamosa, and later, a sales representative for KSPK radio.

Wright is also secretary of the Forbes Wagon Randy Wright Creek Land Owners Association Board of Directors.

He enjoys photography, hunting, and fishing, and has served on the boards of Ducks Unlimited, Colorado Guides and Outfitters (local chapter), and the Colorado Bowhunter’s Association. He has been a member of the NRA and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

“I’m the second of three generations of Adams State graduates. Adams State has been good to us, as it has to many San Luis Valley families. I’m looking forward to doing my part to make sure that tradition continues for a long time,” Wright said.

The president of Walters and Associates, Walters has served as a trustee since 1997, originally as part of the governing board of the State College System of Colorado, then on Adams State’s independent board. He served as board chair from 2005 to 2010.

San Luis Valley natives Rogers and Wright were confirmed as trustees at a Feb. 13 hearing before the Colorado Senate Education Committee, in Denver. Both will serve three-year terms concluding in 2017.

Latino Studies minor launched As befits a Hispanic Serving Institution, Adams State recently introduced a new minor in Latino Studies. The crossdisciplinary program is housed in the Dept. of History, Anthropology, Philosophy, Political Science, and Spanish.

It includes courses from the fields of language, history, literature, sociology, and political science, taught by faculty with expertise in Latino aspects of these fields.

If those lyrics prove true, then Don Richmond’s legacy will attest to his talent, creativity, and generosity. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Musical Arts at Adams State University’s fall commencement, in recognition and appreciation of his work as “the strongest driving force for live music in this area.”

He was nominated for the honor by Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Kay O. Watkins ‘55, and Dr. David E. Clemmer ‘87, who is the Robert and Marjorie Mann Chair, Professor of Chemistry, and Assoc. Dean for Natural and Mathematical Sciences for the College of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University, Bloomington.

Richmond has been making his living playing and producing music in the Colorado-New Mexico area since 1970. He has played with Tumbleweed, the Rock Bottom Band, Hired Hands, and currently, the Rifters. He has captured the sounds of others and himself on more than 100 albums that have been recorded at his studio, Howlin' Dog Records in Alamosa.

His book, Getting Your Music Past the Fear, deals with the psychology of creativity and performance.

Richmond also has played benefits for and served on the boards of many local non-profit organizations.

“Because of Don, people in the San Luis Valley and Northern New Mexico have access to much more high quality live music than otherwise would be possible,” said Clemmer and Watkins. “What has kept him in the San Luis Valley is his desire to record the music of this area.”

The minor requires students take 19 credit hours. Four credits must be in elementary Spanish I or II, with the remainder selected from among 10 courses. Students must take at least one course each from English, political science, history, and sociology.

Cultural heritage grant aids CASA The student led-organization, C.A.S.A. (Cultural Awareness Student Achievement) was awarded a cultural heritage grant of nearly $5,000 from The Sangre De Cristo National Her-

itage Area for its project, Roots Run Deep: Preserving Heritage by Honoring Identity.

C.A.S.A is matching the grant with $7,235 in cash and in-kind services.

Grant projects include: • Harvest and preparation of traditional chicos with acequia farmers in San Luis • Traditional slaughter of a hog with the seventh-generation Salazar family • Building a traditional horno used by the Pueblo peoples on campus • Creation of a traditional sheepherder’s museum in the form of a 1930s era sheepherder trailer from the valley

Federal grant supports expansion of robotics laboratory A grant from the Department of Defense (DOD) of more than one-quarter million dollars will create a new robotics laboratory that will expand research opportunities for Adams State undergraduates and local K-12 students.

“We are very excited," said Dr. Matt Nehring, chair of the chemistry, mathematics, and computer science department. "Robots capture the imagination of the public and students of all ages – it is difficult to find a more tangible way for sparking interest in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) at any level.”

The project dovetails with Adams State’s five-year Title V STEM grant’s outreach efforts to encourage more students to pursue bachelor's degrees in STEM fields. The lab will substantially increase STEM research opportunities for undergraduate students, expand hands-on student engagement in the

college classroom, and inspire K-12 students to explore STEM activities.

The DOD grant supports equipment that furthers its research interests in artificial intelligence and computer science, such as TETRIX robotics, Clearpath Robotics Husky mobile robot platforms, NAO Next Gen humanoid robots, and infrared camera systems.

“This full-fledged robotics laboratory will transform our research capacity and our potential to engage students in STEM studies,” Nehring said.

Experience with 3D printing and a milling machine will help students learn valuable 21st-century skills with direct application in the working world. In addition, professors and students in computer science, physics, and mathematics will be able to collaborate in exploring topics in artificial intelligence and surveillance, and supporting computer science programming and its mobile applications.

The lab will also support expansion of Adams State's pre-engineering program and restructuring of computer science offerings.

Campus improvement projects benefit local economy "This project will help me rehire employees I laid off in December,” said Mark Hensley '89, president of Valley Electric, which won the bid for all electrical work, including fire alarm and communications systems. Additional area subcontractors include Alcon Construction, Highland Cabinets, and Vendola Plumbing.

Adams State President David Svaldi said: "I am extremely gratified that the remodel of our original campus building, Richardson Hall, can give back to the community, much as community members' donations were instrumental in helping Adams State open its doors in 1925."

"Adams State’s confidence in us means a lot," Hensley said, noting his company has previously done work in nearly every campus building.

The long-awaited renovation of Richardson Hall began in early March. The general contractor, G.H. Phipps Construction, has bid about $3 million worth of work on the $16.9 million project to local firms, according to Bill Mansheim, ASU vice president for finance and governmental relations.

Phipps, which also built Porter Hall, teamed up on the project with OZ Architecture.

grieving mother turned activist brings message to adams state In October 2006, just weeks before her fourteenth birthday,

Megan Meier committed suicide – every parent’s worst nightmare.

But the Missouri teen’s death put the evils of cyberbullying in the nation’s spotlight.

Rather than succumb to helplessness and depression, Megan’s mother, Tina, focused on raising awareness of cyberbullying, establishing the Megan Meier Foundation in December 2007. She now devotes her energy and time to speaking out against the devastation and permanent damage caused by all types of bullying.

At a recent campus lecture sponsored by the Department of Counselor Education, Tina told the over-flow audience of Megan’s short life and struggle with self-esteem. She encouraged the listeners to understand how bullying can crack and even break an individual.

The response to the lecture was “phenomenal,” according to Dr. Cheri Meder ‘08, asst. professor of counselor education, who organized the event.

More than 150 parents, educators, and students made Tina’s talk a standingroom-only event. Five area school districts bussed students to Adam State for the lecture. “The stories I have heard and that were shared with Tina really showed me we made an impact by bringing her here to share Megan's story.”

Tina observed her daughter’s constant struggle to “fit in,” which began at a young age. She did all she could to bolster Megan’s confidence, such as enrolling her in team sports, transferring her to a private school, and arranging therapy. Perhaps the saddest part of Megan’s story is that during her final months she had begun to transform, becoming outgoing, making new friends, enjoying music, shopping, crushing on boys. Her mother remem-

bers her “hysterical” laughter, and her being a “funny, goofy, young teenager.”

Despite Tina’s close supervision of Megan’s MySpace account, including owning the password, Megan’s trusting and open nature led her to “friend” a stranger, 16-year-old Josh Evans. Tina hesitated before allowing Megan to friend Josh, but felt Megan would go behind her back if she said no. Tina had read many articles on fake accounts and the dangers of the Internet, but believed her constant diligence would keep her daughter safe.

Although the online friendship started out positive, it flipped one day when “Josh” sent spiteful, mean, and cruel messages. That evening Megan ended her life. Within a month, Tina discovered Josh wasn’t real; his account had been created by their neighbors, a mother and daughter. What’s more, the neighbors were found to have broken no laws and were, thus, not legally liable for Megan’s death.

beware desensitization Tina cautioned the audience about becoming desensitized about the term “bullying.” Meder agrees: “As Tina mentioned, when ‘bullying’ is mentioned, students roll their eyes and check out. However, the impact of bullying and cyberbullying is a real issue children and young adults are facing.”

Tina worries that the “constant bombardment” of disasters and tragedies across media is causing people to lose empathy for victims. Bullying can literally scar an individual, she said, describing research that shows brain scans of a

constantly bullied child are very similar to those of returning veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

“We are all here for a purpose. Don’t stop trying or be silent. Keep moving forward until you find help,” Tina said.

Meder is hopeful Tina’s presentation made an impact and reached at least one individual dealing with cyberbullying or issues they have remained silent about.

“At the very least, the event has opened the dialogue for very important conversations about issues that might not have otherwise been discussed.

Many people struggle silently, and our goal was to make an impact by breaking that silence. There is still so much work to be done, but it takes one event and one step toward progress, and hopefully this was the first step in many to come,” Meder said.

Tina encouraged parents to monitor their children’s mobile devices and computers, to notice any changes in behavior, and to act immediately in the event of bullying. “Contact teachers and administrators, and document incidents.

Be aware, and have a paper trail.”

Meder said local schools subsequently requested help and information to address the issue of cyberbullying.

The Counselor Education Department’s goal is to work collaboratively with the local community to address their needs.

“It is also important that we are addressing the needs ASU students are facing, and this is one of them.”

Education prof serves the “have nots” From the Philippines, to China, to Alamosa, Dr. Anicia Alvarez spreads inspiration and education across the world.

Chris Medina '12, a special education teacher at Mt. Valley School in Saguache, Colo., said Alvarez was "amazing."

He uses her approach to help his students. As a non-traditional student, Medina had himself struggled with the science requirements.

"Dr. Alvarez has a way of helping you see the whole picture and understanding the subject. She really gets her students engaged and excited. I have been able to pass that along to my current students."

Kurt Cary ‘71, ‘78, teacher education associate chair, also enjoys working with Alvarez. “She is always smiling and positive in nature. She is very strong in her content areas and well respected by students and faculty alike.”

Alvarez grew up on a farm, which contributed to her strong interest in science and the environment. Her family owns a plantation that produces corn and coconut. She played with the children of the workers and has wonderful memories of a childhood surrounded by flowers, fruits, rivers, and multi-ethnic friends.

“If you have a happy childhood, you’ll live a happy life,” Alvarez said. Her childhood influenced her aspirations to further her education and the education of many others around the world. “The value of education has been planted on us.

The assistant professor of teacher education grew up in the Philippines, which showed her “what it is like to have and not to have.” She has spent much of her career in education helping those on the “have not” end of the spectrum.

After obtaining graduate degrees in science education, early childhood education, and development management and a Ph.D., Alvarez returned to her hometown and established the Hansel and Gretel School for Children in 1996.

She developed and designed a curriculum that focused on the multiple potentials of children. She believes school curriculum should harness and develop these multiple intelligences through experiential learning, creative dance and physical movements, local ethnic music, and art. The school has since then expanded to elementary, secondary, and special education, to cater to students with special needs.

Alvarez explained how the Philippine school system differs from that of the United States. In her school, students in grades 11 and 12 complete a curriculum that allows them to earn a certificate of proficiency in vocational education.

“This track is beneficial for students who cannot afford to continue on to higher education degree courses,” Alvarez said. This certificate provides them with vocational training in jobs like food technology, textiles and dressmaking, computer technology, service hospitality, hairdressing, and other entry-level jobs. Unlike students in the United States, Filipino students do not have financial aid available to obtain a higher education.

In 2002, Alvarez expanded her school to nearby islands in southern Philippines to help the children of local ethnic groups. She also opened a school in China, Wisdom Tree International School House, a multiple intelligence school where Chinese children learn English and Mandarin using their MI strengths, coupled with their rich Chinese culture.

With the help of her two daughters, all of Alvarez’s schools are successful.

While she continues to be dedicated to the schools in China and the Philippines, Alvarez enjoys working with preservice students at Adams State. “I am a life-long learner, and I know there is more to learn about teaching and learning from my fellow colleagues, pre-service students, and teachers in the local schools.”

Fellow professor, Dr. Linda Christian, describes Alvarez as competent and skilled, with many talents that benefit students and professors. “Her world-view is valuable for our students. As someone who has started and administered schools around the world, she brings a wealth of knowledge and depth of understanding. Her reflective nature and insights often make us think much more deeply about our work. Dr. Alvarez’s keen intellect, wisdom, sharp wit, and energetic spirit make her a joy to work with.”

what does “green” mean to you?

As an Adams State alumnus, you may immediately think of your alma mater . . . the Long Green Line . . . or spring. Increasingly, “green” has come to signify environmental consciousness, or the quest to achieve sustainability in energy use and impact, thereby reducing humanity’s “carbon footprint.” Near-term, failure to “think green” can cost more of that other green — money.

Adams State University is coordinating a variety of sustainability efforts under a new committee dedicated to the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). In 2008, President David Svaldi signed the commitment, and by virtue of alphabetical order, Adams State tops the list of 679 higher education signatories.

With a shared concern for the “unprecedented scale and speed of global warming and its potential for large-scale, adverse health, social, economic and ecological effects,” the institutions commit to developing comprehensive plans to achieve climate neutrality and to take immediate action to reduce greenhouse gases. Kat Olance, now retired, coordinated ASU’s initial reporting for the ACUPCC, which outlines the university’s goals and tracks progress.

The ACUPCC committee is coordinating efforts and creating momentum for more progress. Headed by Mary Hoffman, executive director of ASU Community Partnerships, the committee includes representatives from Facilities Services, Business Affairs, and ASU EARTH (Environmental Action for Resources, Transportation, Health).

"We have always had support from the administration, but now the buy-in is even more significant, which means our efforts can progress more rapidly,” said Dr. Marty Jones, emeritus professor of chemistry, who remains active with EARTH, which he initiated in 2007 with several other faculty, staff, and students. "We certainly have the capability to reduce our footprint further. We need more education to raise awareness and action among all campus citizens."

Campus sustainability efforts range from trayless dining in the cafeteria (which reduces food and water waste) to meeting LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) standards in new construction.

Obviously, climate consciousness did not just arrive on campus overnight. For some time, the State of Colorado has encouraged green practices regarding transportation and use of recycled paper. Online and electronic communication has enabled the Admissions Office and the Business Office to re10

duce their paper use by 80 percent, which in turn cut postage costs, CO2 emissions, and printing expenses.

The campus print shop began recycling paper many years ago.

More efficient irrigation and heating systems have been installed over the years, and the synthetic turf on playing fields saves millions of gallons of water.

The old grass football field, replaced with turf five years ago, soaked up two million gallons of water per year.

Adams State’s utility bills — for natural gas, elece-commu tricity, water, and waste removal — exceed $1.3 million annually; electricity accounts for almost half the total. But two recent green energy projects are helping ASU make longer strides toward sustainability.

Six percent of the university’s electricity is now generated by a $1.4 million solar photovoltaic system, installed on the rooftops of Plachy Hall four years ago. Since 2008, campus electricity use has remained stable, despite a 35-percent increase in total facility square footage and 40 percent growth in the on-campus student body.

Beginning in 2009, Adams State engaged the energy service company, TRANE, to audit campus facilities and implement energy efficiency measures. Valued at $2.7 million, the energy performance contract entailed installation of more efficient plumbing fixtures, light fixtures and motion sensor switches, energy-efficient HVAC systems and controls, and enhanced building “envelopes,” which include insulation and seals on window and doors. The improvements are calculated to pay for themselves over 20 years; TRANE guarantees to pay the difference if that does not occur.

The campus uses 39 million gallons of water a year, according to Scott Travis, director of Facilities Services, who noted Adams State’s artesian well is being repaired to once again supply non-potable water for irrigation.

Environmental advocacy has been one of ASU Community Partnerships’ priorities since its inception. Their work has included a Solar Expo, assisting the EPA’s pilot study of community sustainability, and green construction workshops. ods It’s now working with SEED Park, International, to plan a green business park that will serve as a national model for clean, rural business development.

Once EARTH became active, Community Partnerships teamed with the group to sell reusable shopping bags, using the theme, “Plastic or Planet.”

EARTH organizes activities for Earth Week, which last year drew 230 participants. It is now creating community garden plots at the East Campus (formerly Evans School).

It was EARTH that initiated organized recycling on campus, partnering with Habitat for Humanity and the City of Alamosa. Habitat provided recycling containers in exchange for the cans. The city picks up, empties, and returns to the campus a trailer they made for ASU’s recycled materials.

EARTH work study students do the leg and arm work of collecting and sorting recyclables around campus, which amount to about fourteen 40-gallon bags of plastics, and six of cans, weekly.

The group raises awareness during America Recycles Day, held each November, and has become active in Recyclemania.

This year, Adams State placed first in Colorado and 12th in the nation for the amount of recyclables collected during the Game Day Recycling Challenge.

adding, “I am really excited about our pilot building recycling project.”

With additional funding from a private donor, the ASU Foundation, and Community Partnerships, staff in Porter Hall and the Nielsen Library are using their department budgets to implement building-wide recycling, coordinated by the ACUPCC committee. Designated bins throughout the buildings will promote recycling and ease sorting.

Two other recent developments should also help cut Adams State’s contributions to the landfill, which now total 2.6 million lbs. a year, at a cost of $60,000. The city and its Rickey Recycling Center donated a large trailer now adjacent to the Student Union Building to facilitate cardboard recycling by Sodexo, the university’s food service.

“We’ve seen a huge increase. Cardboard recycling at the SUB is now 5-7,000 lbs. a week,” Travis said.

In addition, EARTH established a glass recycling location available to campus members, in cooperation with Recycle Creede, which transports the glass.

“More of the pieces are coming together,” said Associate Professor of Earth Science, Dr. Jared Beeton, who now chairs EARTH. “These sustainability efforts are important for the environment and for the future of ASU. College students want this, and over time, it will increase recruitment and retention."

CFRE International is the first globally recognized credential for fundraising professionals, and the credential is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.

CFRE International certifies experienced fundraising professionals aspiring to the highest standards of ethics, competence, and service to the philanthropic sector. Individuals granted the CFRE credential have met a series of standards set by CFRE International, which include tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated fundraising achievement, and a commitment to service to not-for-profit organizations. alumnotes ◗1950s Clifford Britton `57 (Grand Junction, CO) retired from Mesa State University after 31 years as a professor of mathematics.

◗1960s Ruth Spencer Clark `60 (Yuba City, AZ) is retired but does volunteer work for the Christian Assistance Network in Yuba City and her church library.

Albert Leonard King `61, `64 (Alamosa, CO) taught 34 years in the history department at Alamosa High School.

Tano `63, `70 and Loretta `64 Paolucci (La Junta, CO) retired in May of 1992 after teaching in the La Junta Public School System for 30 years. Loretta taught 2nd grade in Cokedale, Colo., for 5 years prior to moving with her husband to La Junta in 1962. During the next 30 years, she taught 4th-5th grades.

Tano began his teaching career in 1962 as a junior high science teacher. In 1975, he became assistant principal/athletic director at La Junta H.S. In 1986, he returned to the junior high as principal until his retirement in 1992. Retirement lasted one day. For the next 4 years, he served as half-time athletic director at La Junta High School. In 2001, he received the Distinguished Service Award from CHSAA for his work with the state wrestling tournament committee, of which he is still a member. This year, Tano will begin his 51st year of service to CHSAA. The couple writes, “Retirement has been very rewarding for both of us. We are the parents of 5 children, who are all college graduates. We are also the grandparents of 13 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren. It has been extremely rewarding for us to be able to attend their school and athletic activities. We are proud to say that Adams State has served us well.”

Ray Kogovsek `64 (Pueblo, CO) was honored as the "Citizen of the Year" at the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting in January. "Ray Kogovsek is receiving this prestigious award for his lifelong career serving the Pueblo community and the Southern Colorado region. Ray was an outstanding public servant in the state legislature and congress and has dedicated his private career to fight for Southern Colorado and the betterment of Pueblo," said Chamber President/ CEO, Rod Slyhoff. Kogovsek began his political career shortly after completing his education as a deputy county clerk. He was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives and to the Colorado State Senate two years later.

He served two terms, including several years as senate minority leader, before being

elected to Colorado's Third Congressional District in 1978. Kogovsek served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He then returned to his home state and established Kogovsek & Associates, Inc. He continues to serve as president of the firm.

Berk Sterling `64, `68 (Lafayette, CO) has taught in Pennsylvania and Ohio, at a community college in Colorado, and for 25 years was a recruiter for the University of Colorado/ Boulder. He was a regional Promise Keepers Trainer for 6 years. He is now a Developmental Disabilities Consultant for the state. He has been married to Sandy for 47 years. They have 2 sons: John (46) and Chris (43). They also have 4 grandkids, ages 4-16. They have lived in the Boulder Valley for the past 44 years. He writes, “God’s blessings abound!”

Janice (Haws) Colwell-Cunningham `66, `70 (Grand Junction, CO) writes, “Seventy rolled around this year! Didn’t bother me one bit— still going strong. I enjoyed a reunion with Don & Gina Duewall in Albuquerque recently.

I’m still camping in Utah. I have a monster dog named ‘Hoss’ and my outdoor livestock to keep me busy. . . i.e. quail, pinion jays, gray rock squirrels, chipmunks, and a few bull snakes. Life is good!”

Sue Yoshitake King `66, `90 (Pukalani, HI) retired from the state of Hawaii after 18 years as an elementary teacher. She is now back in the system teaching Hawaiian Studies to 3rd5th graders at Makawao Elementary School.

She writes, “I am planning to run a halfmarathon in Maui this September 21, 2014!

Ellwood Ervin `67 (Aurora, CO) attended the 36th Starz Denver Film Festival in November.

He saw 49 films or events, which tied his alltime best in 1980. His total for all 36 film festivals is between 1,240-1,250 films watched.

Betty Pearson Young `67 (Leisure World, AZ) loves living in Arizona. Her grandson and his wife are both graduates of the Air Force Academy. Lucas is a tanker pilot, and Bobby just finished a doctorate degree. Her daughter and her husband live in Louisville, CO. Marion Jonte `68 (Fallon, NV) and wife, Patricia, have lived in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, and the last 27 years in Nevada. They have 2 daughters and 9 grandchildren. Marion worked 27 years in a medical laboratory and x-ray, 25 years in multi-line casualty insurance, and is still working after 14 years in the hardware retail business. He

plans to retire in August, 2014. He is proud of Adams State.

Aaron Sahr `68 (Roanoke, VA) writes, “I truly enjoyed returning to ASU for my class reunion and homecoming week activities. The 49-43 football win for ASU within the last minute was a classically exciting game!”

◗1970s Michael Williamson `70 (Northville, MI) writes, “After 44 years engaged in public education, I am working less, skiing more, and being a lot more selective in how I spend my time!”

Steven Cook `71 (Colorado Springs, CO) is still alive at 70 and continues to ski, play rock ‘n’ roll, and work out. He says he is loving life and will never forget Adams State!

Bruce Meller `71 (San Antonio, TX) writes, “I would like to say hello to sweet Dee Betts, Jim Blantnick, Randy Gettman, Dennis Marrion, Dutch & Judy Collins, Harris Spencer, Joe Melendez, and Ric Cline, and thanks to coach Louie Long. Great times at Adams State!”

Bruce is now married to wonderful wife, Mary Meller.

Debbie Elam `72 (Lamar, CO) retired in 2010 after 38 years in education. She was named Adjunct Faculty of the Year at Lamar Community College. Debbie received an Associate of Arts degree from Lamar Community College in 1970, then continued her education at Adams State College. She began her long teaching career in Haswell, Colo., teaching a multigraded classroom, as well as music. After three years she added head teacher and basketball coach to her duties. In 1976 she was hired as a 6th grade teacher at Parkview in the Lamar School District. She transferred to Lamar Middle School as an English teacher in 1981. Debbie earned an M.A. in Gifted Education from Western State College in 1988. She has served as a consultant in gifted education for the Colorado Department of Education.

Judy Moeny `74, `92 (Grand Junction, CO) retired after 36 years in education and is now sewing, quilting, and enjoying the beautiful outdoors in Colorado. Her husband, Don, retired in 2012 from Marmot, Inc. Christine Delaney-Haynes `75 (Placerville, CO) recently retired as director of technology for the Telluride school district. She is teaching online professional development for eNet Colorado. She continues to work with technology part time.

Jo Kissinger `77 (Fruita, CO) writes, “After living close to 30 years in the Denver Metro area, I sold my house this past June and moved over to the Western Slope! It has been a wonderful move, less traffic, a different area to hike and bike. I am just loving it!”

◗1980s Augustine Gonzales Sr. `81 (Del Norte, CO) and his wife, Cathy, have 4 beautiful kids and 12 grandchildren. He had a career in the US Army for 19 years, US Marines for 3 years, and the Army National Guard for 6 years, 9 months. He is a retired Master Sergeant who has lived in Germany, Korea, Greece, Honduras, Panama, and Europe and seen 42 states.

Thomas Motz `82 (Grand Junction, CO) has spent the last 25 years in Grand Junction, working in family medicine. Daughter Gretchen Sand `11 produced grandson Beckett, hopefully a 5th-generation A-Stater! Life couldn’t be better—lots of great memories and friendships!

Sue Patterson `83, `86 (Alamosa, CO) is a retired art teacher. She is now welding scrap metal sculptures and painting. She has shown her work in Salida, Cañon City, Creede, and Alamosa.

Randy Wright ’84 (Alamosa, CO) was confirmed as a trustee for Adams State University at a Feb. 13 hearing before the Colorado Senate Education Committee, in Denver. He will serve a three-year term concluding in 2017.

He is Executive Director of the Alamosa County Economic Development Corporation and Director of the Alamosa County Chamber of Commerce. “I'm the second of three gener-

He has been called an “international star” and the “leading figure” in commercial and academic ion mobility spectrometry in the physical, analytical, and biological chemistry communities.

Clemmer’s research has diverse applications in the life sciences and have been used to probe deeply into the proteome of plasma as a new dimension for imaging of tissues, to understand how post-translational modifications influence conformation, to assess structures of large protein complexes, and to understand the fundamental characteristics of disease, including neurodegenerative diseases.

He has published over 190 widely cited articles and chapters, delivered over 225 presentations and holds over 40 patents, including worldwide filings. A fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Clemmer received the National Fresenius award in 2000, a singular honor given to the nation’s pre-eminent chemist under the age of 35. In 2002 he was named to Popular Science magazine’s “Brilliant 10” list. He has also received the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award from IU, the Teaching Excellence Recognition Award, the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, and the Tracy M. Sonneborn Award. Lori Thrailkill Parker `85, `97 (Lamar, CO) continues to work in Lamar schools. Her husband owns a heating/air conditioning company in Lamar. Both of her children are in college: son Adam is a junior, and daughter Audrey is a sophomore.

Monica Johnson Martinez `88 (Pueblo, CO) works for the Colorado Department of Corrections. Her son, Sean (21), joined the Marines last March. Son Blaze (17) is a junior in high school and aspires to be valedictorian of his class of 2015 and earn an AA degree in general studies at PCC. Daughter Jesse Rose (12) is an aspiring artist/writer and animal lover.

◗1990s Sister Dominique Pisciotta `90 is a retired volunteer at Assisi Heights, a Franciscan retirement home in Rochester, MN. Andrew Valdez `91 (Mosca, CO) is a geologist with the National Park Service at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, where he is part of a resource management team that collects data to help understand the dunes and the area's hydrology.

Porter Scholar tells tales of med school “Attending Adams State is probably the best decision I’ve ever made,” said Amber (Harlan) Price ‘12. “The opportunities I had to do research as a Porter Scholar were key to getting into med school.”

One of Adams State University’s first Porter Scholars, she returned to her alma mater in November to address the current group of Porter Scholars. The Porter Scholars program provides assistance and expanded educational opportunities to outstanding students in science and mathematics.

Price is in her second year at Creighton University Medical School in Omaha, Neb., having earned a B.S. in cellular and molecular biology from Adams State.

At November’s dinner for this year’s Porter Scholars and science & mathematics faculty, Price described the rigors of medical school and talked about her career aspirations.

Medical school is a “completely different world,” she said, noting she averages a 110-hour week, between classes, research, and study. “I have friends in doctoral programs and dental school – it’s all hard, but you can adapt. Have faith that Adams State has prepared you really well. The best advice I could give you is to work your butt off; it pays off.”

With her sights set on becoming an orthopedic surgeon, Price also fulfills her interest in genetics by doing research at Children’s Hospital in Omaha, where she works with children afflicted with osteogenesis imperfecta, or “brittle bone disease.”

The Porter Scholars Program was created in 2007 by the largest gift in the university’s history: 250,000 shares in E*TRADE Financial Corporation worth $5.8 million. William ‘51 and Joan Porter made the donation specifically to help mathematics and science majors “on the basis of their need and their ongoing academic achievement.” Mr. Porter earned a degree in mathematics. He is chairman emeritus and founder of E*TRADE and founder of the International Securities Exchange.

“Band Mom” jacket comes home For three seasons, Selina Landes ’93 followed the Adams State marching band to every home game, pulling a red wagon filled with “everything a mom carries in her purse,” but enough to take care of all the marching band students.

She would sit with the marching band and help with any last minute preparation, including sewing a button on a jacket. Her red wagon held everything from water to safety pins, aspirin, and a tin of buttons. “If someone was missing a button, I would sew it back on before they went out to perform.” In cold weather, she made sure her wagon had coats and gloves for the band members to warm themselves up between numbers.

The marching band students and their director showed their appreciation by presenting her with her own jacket that read “ASC Band Mom” on the front and sported an Indian Head mascot on the back. During Homecoming 2013, Landes donated the jacket to Adams State.

Landes volunteered with the band while completing college herself and tutoring 40 hours a week, even though none of her children were in the marching band.

Landes’ daughter, Deb, graduated from Adams State in ‘95, and her grandson, Joshua Landes ’16 is a current music major. Landes and her husband, Duane, live in Florida.

men’s team places 2nd

Women’s Indoor T&F wins NCAA II Championship The Adams State University Women's Indoor Track and Field team handily won the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship with 67 points. The men's team finished in second place, just a point and a half behind national champion St. Augustine's. The competition was held March 14-15 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Record-setting performances resulted in both teams winning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships (RMAC), held for the first time in Adams State’s new High Altitude Training Center, Feb. 28-March 1. It marked the women’s 13th straight championship, the men’s third.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named ASU athletes and coaches as Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2014.

record. Kayon Robinson won first place in the 400 meters with a time of 53.90 seconds, breaking the JDL Fast Track record time of 54.32. She finished in third place in the 200 meters with a time of 23.98 seconds.

O'Brien finished in second place in the mile with a time of 4:51.34. Sunayna Wahi finished in seventh place in the 60 meters with a time of 7.68 seconds. Roberts finished in sixth place in the 800 meters with her time of 2:11.02. Ackiesha Burnett finished in sixth place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.43 seconds. The 1,600-meter relay team of Serena Canegan, Jessica Scherrer, Roberts, and Robinson finished in fifth place with a time of 3:49.02.

On the men’s side, Kevin Batt finished in first place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:06.24, breaking the JDL Fast Track record time. Jovanny Godinez finished in sixth place with a time of 14:20.04.

Wesley Lavong won first place in the shot put with a distance of 19.50 meters. Carlton Lavong finished in second place in the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.56 meters; he took third place in the triple jump with a distance of 15.69 meters.

Two Grizzlies earned points in the mile: Matt Daniels finished in third place with a time of 4:11.41, and Chandler Reid finished in sixth place with a time of 4:12.99.

Chaz Butler finished seventh in the 60 meters with a time of 6.88 seconds.

Justin Bethea finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 2.13 meters.

Oliver Aitchison finished in fourth place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.83.

regional honors Just prior to the National Championships, three Grizzly athletes and two coaches won regional USTFCCCA awards.

Kevin Batt was named the South Central Regional Men's Track Athlete of the Year, having finished the 5,000 meters in first place at the 2014 RMAC Indoor Track Championships.

Batt was the regular season leader in both the mile and the 3000 meters. Batt won first place in the 3,000 meters at the Husky Classic, hosted by the University of Washington, where the competition was primarily Division I schools.

Kayon Robinson was named the South Central Regional Women's Track Athlete of the Year, taking first place in both the 60 meters and the 200 meters at the 2014 RMAC Indoor Track Championships. She was also part of the first-place winning, 4x400 relay at the RMAC Championships. She totaled 22 ½ points for the Grizzlies.

Carlton Lavong was named the South Central Regional Men's Field Athlete of the Year in recognition of his first place finishes in both the long jump and the triple jump at the 2014 RMAC Indoor Championships. He also placed fourth in the 60 meters to earn 25 points for the Grizzlies, the most points during the RMAC Championships.

Rock Light ’79, ‘80 was named the South Central Regional Women's Head Coach of the Year. He returned to his

alma mater to help the Grizzlies win their 13th straight Women's RMAC Indoor Track Championship. He led the Grizzlies to a number-one ranking during the season.

Damon Martin ’87 was named the South Central Regional Men's Assistant Coach of the Year. He directs the distance and middle distance runners for the Grizzlies.

Men’s Basketball qualified for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout for the fourth time under Head Coach Louis Wilson.

The Grizzlies finished the 2013-14 regular season 17-9 overall and 13-9 in the RMAC. Adams State began the season nearly upsetting the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Las Vegas in exhibition play. At one point during the season, the Grizzlies won seven straight games. The Grizzlies earned the sixth seed against third seed University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in a matchup played on March 4 at Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Bruno Machado earned RMAC All-Academic selection with a 3.50 grade point average in Business Administration. Four Grizzlies made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, while three earned selection to the RMAC All-Conference teams. Juwan Buchanan was named Second Team All-RMAC, finishing the regular season with 255 points. Mike Hemsley earned Third Team All-RMAC selection, finishing with 260 points while leading the Grizzlies with 173 rebounds. Jaree Crawford, who led the Grizzlies with 293 points in the regular season, was selected to the Third Team All-RMAC.

swimming The women’s swim team placed third in the RMAC Swimming Championships with 764 points, while the men’s team finished with 213 points for fourth place.

Melissa Lopez earned RMAC third team selection for her third place finish in the 1,000-yard with a time of 10:51.40 and her time of 1:56.29 in the 200-yard freestyle. Marissa Mantzey earned second team selection in the 50-yard freestyle after finishing in second place with a time of 24.17, beating the NCAA Division II B standard of 24.23. Mantzey finished the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.49 for second place, beating the B standard time of 57.75.

Aspen Hahn earned second team selection in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.08, beating the B standard time of 1:05.34. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Hahn earned a third team selection with her time of 2:23.01. Jennell Higgs placed third and earned a third team selection with her time of 2:08.78 in the 200-yard butterfly. McKenzie Barber earned a second team selection in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 52.97. Erica Norton beat the B standard in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.21 to make the third team.

Four relay teams also earned All-RMAC selections. The 200-yard medley relay of Mantzey, Hahn, Norton, and Briana Trujillo beat the B standard time of 1:47.17 with their time of 1:46.33 for second place. The 200-yard freestyle relay of Mantzey, Trujillo, Lopez, and Barber earned third team selection with a time of 1:37.87. freestyle relay with a time of 3:35.98. In the 400-yard medley relay, Mantzey, Hahn, Norton, and Barber beat the B standard time with their time of 3:52.87 for second team selection.

Benjamin Laxson became the first Adams State men's swimmer to earn first-team selection in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 55.89. He was named to the third team in the 200-yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:04.71. Thirteen members of the swimming team earned selection to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

women’s basketball New Head Women’s Basketball Coach Rebecca Alvidrez began her first season with the Grizzlies with a four-game winning streak, including two wins at November’s Bankers Classic. In the first night of November’s Bankers Classic, the Grizzlies defeated Eastern New Mexico University, 58-46.

Alvidrez and the Grizzlies followed this up with an upset victory of then-No. 10 Midwestern State University. Alvidrez earned her first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory in a win over Western State Colorado University, on Dec. 20.

Student-athletes are one-third of student body The Athletic Department’s introduction four years ago of several new NCAA athletics programs has had campus-wide benefits. With the objective of increasing enrollment, the Grizzlies added men’s golf, soccer, and baseball, along with men’s and women’s teams in lacrosse and swimming/diving, in addition to cheerleading and four JV teams.

This doubled the number of student-athletes on campus, meaning roughly one-third of the university’s undergraduate student body participates in at least one inter-collegiate sport.

“There are 350 students who would not have attended Adams State without the opportunity to join one of our teams,” said Dr. Michael Mumper ’76, senior vice president of Enrollment Management & Program Development. He noted the additional sports programs have helped to balance the gender ratios of the freshman class, some of which previously had been 60-65 percent female.

The increased enrollment brought by this influx of student athletes has more than covered operating costs of the new programs, Mumper added.

“Studies, both internal and external, have shown that student-athletes perform, remain, and graduate at a significantly higher level than their non-athletic peers,” noted Athletic Director Larry Mortensen ’88, ‘93.

Grizzlies walk the talk of service The Grizzlies take seriously the commitment to community engagement promulgated by NCAA Division II, which emphasizes studentathletes’ total personal development.

The ASU Athletic Department won the 2013 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference NCAA Division II Award of Excellence, after being nominated by San Luis Valley Health. The Grizzlies were recognized for their Think Pink Weekends that raised awareness of breast cancer, as well as for their participation in SLV Health’s annual Stephanie Miner 5K Walk and Run, which benefits the Women’s Imaging Center. ASU represented the RMAC in national nominations for the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence.

The wrestling team finished in third place at the RMAC/West Regional Wrestling Championships, with four Grizzlies advancing to the national championship tournament (March 14-15) in their weight class: No. 1 nationally ranked at 141 lbs., Ryan Fillingame, Max Ortega at 149 lbs., Daniel Kelly at 157 lbs., and Mark Mabry, Jr. at 165 lbs.

The RMAC West Regional saw five Grizzlies finish in the top four. Fillingame won his championship match by major decision, 11-2, and was named the RMAC Wrestler of the Year. He headed into the national championships with a record of 30-5 with seven pins.

Mabry won the RMAC championship 10-4 in his class, with second place finishes going to Ortega and Kelly. Martin Ramirez finished in fourth place in the 133 pound weight class.
