president’s letter: asu connects with the san luis valley A true learning community is characterized by respectful debate and the exchange of ideas. For Adams State University, that exchange reaches beyond the campus to include the entire San Luis Valley.

Our statutory mission as a Regional Education Provider emphasizes our role in offering programs “that preserve and promote the unique history and culture of the region.” Our Values Statement amplifies further, stating Adams State will achieve Dr. Beverlee J. McClure “Growth through inclusion of diverse cultures and ideas” and create “A learning and civic community of trust, respect, and civility.” The ASU 2020 Strategic Plan illustrates our commitment to these values through two initiatives falling under Goal 5: Community Relations: • Develop and extend positive community partnerships through the continued offering of campus events drawn from cultures of the San Luis Valley.

• Deepen campus understanding of, connections with, and commitment to the larger San Luis Valley.

This issue of the A-Stater shows how these admirable objectives come to fruition through the written word, music, and the visual arts. An important way Adams State connects with the San Luis Valley is through people. One outstanding example is English Professor Aaron Abeyta, whose roots extend back to the earliest days of settlement. His award-winning poetry and prose are a window into the world of the ordinary people who contribute to the extraordinary place that is the San Luis Valley. (See story page 10.)

Our commitment to diversity and community outreach is epitomized through the Music Department’s new initiative, ETHOS: Exploring Equity through Music.

To support that, the department commissioned seven compositions that reflect the heritage, culture, and geography of the San Luis Valley. This San Luis Valley Cultural Commission Project resulted in works for smaller ensembles, making them well suited for rural schools. The focus is on educational and performance opportunities for underserved populations and music programs. (See story page 12.)

The valley’s unique landscape and varied cultures are also the themes of public artwork commissioned with the renovation of Richardson Hall. (See story page 14.)

All eight of the artists represented are from the San Luis Valley, and half are alumni of Adams State’s Art Department. Visitors to Richardson Hall will have no doubt that we are both of and for the Valley.

world aids day was observed on campus December 1 with a candlelight vigil and display of SLV panels from the historic AIDS Memorial Quilt. The annual event allows people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died.

"This national project expresses the beliefs and values that define the work we do on our campus,” said Dr. John Taylor, professor of theatre. “It is not just the work of a particular moment, but part of an ongoing effort to create a more just and inclusive society." Inspired by the tradition of leaving a "ghost light" on in a darkened theatre, the event included theatre and music performances. marie bennett, cole maze, cindy sue millis, shannon rhodes, melissa romero, and chelsea walljasper. Bennett, Rhodes, and Romero were also installed as chapter president, vice president, and secretary, respectively. The chapter is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its charter. Over the last decade, it has inducted an average of 8 new students per year. Total membership, including graduates, is now 81.

miranda johnson, music composition student, won the pikes peak flute choir composition contest for her flute ensemble piece “Solstice Dances.” It will be premiered in Colorado Springs in May.

dr. cheri meder and doctoral students in counselor education and supervision christina jurekovic, rebeccca meidinger, and johnsa phares received a $300 grant from chi sigma iota to complete a quantitative research study titled “An Investigation of School Counselor Professional Identity and Leadership Practices.” Also, Phares will have a short piece published in the International School Counselors Association newsletter, “Social Justice Advocacy in Schools.” paige rutkowski, second-year master’s student in school counseling, was awarded the carla mulkey memorial scholarship through the Colorado School Counseling Association. vasti holstun, a third-year doctoral student, presented a proposal to the colorado school counseling association’s executive board to begin a statewide mentoring program for novice school counselors. The board approved the proposal, and the program will start this fall.

An associate professor of counselor education at Adams State since 2013, Sanders heads the university’s new Office for Graduate Studies. The office will centralize administrative services and provide support to graduate programs and students in both on-campus and distance programs. Graduate student enrollment has doubled in the last 16 years and now represents one-third of total enrollment. ASU offers eleven graduate programs: ten at the master's level and one at the doctoral level.

The search committee noted Sanders already has a stellar reputation on campus, as well as both the knowledge and passion for this new position. Her first step will be to staff the Office of Graduate Studies and work with the Graduate Council to review policies and procedures.

“We need to maximize our strengths and work with the academic departments to see what works, then to create centralized, consistent systems for admissions and other processes. I want to be a consensus builder and meet the needs of each graduate program to allow them to achieve their individual goals,” Sanders said. “Ultimately, we will work to grow graduate programs and support student recruitment.”

Sanders will also chair the Institutional Research Board.

Sanders earned a Doctorate of Education in counselor education from Texas A&M University-Commerce and has taught in counselor education programs for the last 20 years. She also has been a counselor in private practice and at a community clinic. She holds National Counselor Certification, as well as Licensed Professional Counselor certification in New Mexico and Texas.

dr. rick baker, professor of English, had his article “Outsiders Wanting Back In–Rick Blaine’s conversion to Sartre’s Orestes: Casablanca and Existentialism” published in the fall 2016 issue of the journal cinematic codes review. The article explains the allegorical implications between Casablanca (1942) and Jean-Paul Sartre’s resistance play The Flies (1943), which Baker considers superb existential companion pieces.

Bricker and Brown named to Trustees

pam bricker A resident of Del Norte, Colo., Bricker recently concluded a term as Rio Grande County Commissioner. She and her husband, John, own Three Barrel Brewing Company. Previously, she had a gratifying career as an educator and school administrator. She completed that career Pam Bricker as the Byron Syring DELTA Center Principal and Adult Education Director in the Monte Vista School District.

“It was an honor to be appointed an ASU Trustee, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to once again be involved in my lifelong passion for education,” Bricker said.

“My background in education, government, and community service, working with people from all walks of life, has given me a unique perspective that is compatible with the board’s work.”

Bricker has a diverse resume that includes service on the Action 22 Executive Board (a southern Colorado regional advocacy organization), Upper Rio Grande Economic Development, Colorado Department of Criminal Justice and Safety Sex Offender Management Board, Rio Grande Planning and Zoning Commission, the Colorado Coalition of Alternative Education Campuses Board, Colorado Adult Education Professional Association, and Monte Vista City Council. She has also been involved in numerous other boards and volunteer community organizations over the years.

In 2003, Bricker earned an M.A. in education from Adams State with endorsements in educational leadership and in language, literacy, and culture. She also holds a B.S. in foreign languages (Spanish and Russian), with a secondary education endorsement from the University of Northern Colorado.

reeves brown Brown, a resident of Denver, is an independent public policy consultant and Project Coordinator for the “Building a Better Colorado” project, a non-partisan effort to engage Coloradans in a constructive conversation about how to improve their state and seek consensus on public policy recommendations to that end.

“Two things impress me about Adams State at this point in time. Number one is the leadership of the Board of Trustees. It is a combinaReeves Brown tion of people that have both statewide reach and a local passion for the university. The other strong asset is Dr. McClure. I am more and more impressed with her and with her common sense approach. I am very excited to begin working with this team,” Brown said.

Having grown up on a Montana ranch, he added, “My heart is in rural communities, and I recognize the important role higher education can play in defining the fabric of a community and as an economic driver. There is no greater example of an institution serving that role than Adams State.”

From 2011-2015, Brown served on Governor John Hickenlooper’s cabinet as Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), which provides technical assistance on all aspects of local government administration, housing solutions, and property tax administration.

He previously served as Executive Director of CLUB 20, a non-profit political advocacy organization representing the diverse interests of the 22-county Western Colorado region.

He also served as the Executive Director of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association and oversaw the creation of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Agriculture Land Trust, which led to the protection of over 2 million acres of agriculture land nationwide.

All of those experiences allowed him to become familiar with the San Luis Valley. Reeves earned a B.S. in agriculture business with a minor in economics from Montana State University.

nsf grant supports virtual classrooms

Developing virtual classrooms that expand course choices for students is the goal of a new National Science Foundation (NSF) grant recently awarded to Adams State University, in partnership with three other institutions. The three-year grant of $479,762 will fund the project "Engaged Student Learning: Coalition for Undergraduate Computational Data-enabled Science & Engineering (CDSE) Education."

Adams State Professor of Mathematics Matt Ikle is leading the project, in collaboration with Hong Liu of EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University (ERAU), Michael Wolyniak of Hampden-Sydney College, and Raphael D. Isokpehi of Bethune-Cookman University. This grant expands upon a previous NSF-funded project conducted

by Adams State and ERAU. “This approach gives students at smaller institutions access to upper-level courses that might not be offered otherwise. Students also benefit from expertise beyond their own campuses,” Ikle said. For example, smaller schools may have only one or two students interested in Data Mining and Visualization, which Ikle developed and taught in the first project, or Mathematical Modeling

Seventeen faculty and staff working on the adams state pathways project to develop a new comprehensive curriculum for student success based on the Adams Outcomes (adopted by campus vote, spring 2016) participated in the american association of colleges and universities (AAC&U) Assessment and General Education Annual Conference and pre-conference workshops. The conference focused on examining “how faculty members and all campus educators are being supported and rewarded for innovative work and leadership in designing new approaches to teaching and learning that prepare today’s students to be active participants in our nation’s democracy and to succeed in an ever-changing global society.” The group’s travel was supported by the Title V Conexiones grant, with supplementary support from the Center for Teaching, Innovation, and Research.

dr. kristy duran, assoc. professor of biology, and four colleagues published a guest blog post on the scientific american site titled “We Are Never Just Scientists.” They make the point that gender and racial gaps in scientific professions illustrate the need for greater inclusion at all levels. mary hoffman, executive director of Adams State University Community Partnerships, served as a mentor at The Climate Reality Leadership Corps training, held in Denver in March. Nobel Laureate and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore conducted the training, which was attended by 975 participants from 30 countries.

dr. adam kleinschmit, asst. professor of biology, co-led an interactive educational pedagogy workshop at the american society for cell biology Annual Meeting in San Francisco, December 3-7. The workshop focused on cancer as a storyline to teach students about enzymes, cell communication, and genetics. It modeled how to implement highlighted resources in a way that fosters a collaborative learning community in order to increase students’ understanding of both scientific content and the process and practice of science. He also co-authored the manuscript “The GEP: Crowd-Sourcing Big Data Analysis with Undergraduates,” published in the February 2017 issue of the journal trends in genetics. randall smith, senior systems administrator, wrote a book, Docker Orchestration, that was published by Packt Publishing in February.

and Simulation, developed by Hong Liu of ERAU. But the collaboration will bring students from four schools together, creating a larger, viable class size.

Students at all four institutions will take a class simultaneously, through live, interactive broadcasts that are supplemented with web-based content. Another professor will also participate live at each school in order to answer questions or elaborate on instruction.

Adams State faculty Dr. Comfort Cover will teach in the program, as well. Students will pay tuition and receive credit through their home institutions.

“Students can interact with each other and the professor through the live broadcasts, and the local facilitator will be another resource,” Ikle said. He noted four Adams State students who took courses through the original project presented their work on non-linear phenomena at an international conference.

Ikle explained the project’s vision is to build more coalitions of participating schools, broadening the courses each can offer. Over the course of three years, the project will develop four new courses.

academic pursuits andrea rydgren, director and coordinator for Teacher Education’s STEM and Education Excellence for Diverse Students (SEEDS) grant, recently attended a national conference hosted by the federal office for english language acquisition, a subsidiary of the US Department of Education, as part of that agency’s National Professional Development Grant Program. Project directors from across the United States discussed the importance of teacher training in meeting the needs of linguistically diverse students.

ASU’s fourth annual Women’s Week, in early March, focused on both the accomplishments and continued struggles of women. The week covered a range of issues and media. It opened by screening three films from the Denver Women’s Film Festival. Another film, Gender Chip Project, addressed the disparity of representation of women in STEM fields. “Women in the Dark” was a well-attended Q&A session with a panel of local experts on women's well-being and success.

International Women’s Day, March 8, included a Women’s Solidarity March.

Students taking Introduction to Women’s Studies gave presentations on such topics as “Human Trafficking,” “Three Cultures of Weddings,” “Transgender Treatment: Europe and the Middle East,” and “Check My Machismo.”

The week concluded with a Kindred Spirits luncheon featuring a panel of women at ASU who work in traditionally male professions, such as mathematics, chemistry, and computer science.

dr. matthew steffenson, asst. professor of biology, attended the 2017 national meeting of the society for integrative and comparative biology in New Orleans, LA. He presented a talk on his research, “Leg autotomy and its effects on predatorprey interactions in the wolf spider Pardosa valens.”

dr. nate pipitone, assoc. professor of psychology, and recent graduates brandon gallegos ‘15 and danielle walters ‘15 conducted a study to replicate and expand on research originally published in Psychological Science. Their findings were accepted for publication in personality and individual differences. The original 2013 study investigated the fear of holes, or trypophobia, which affects a minor proportion of the human population. The ASU group replicated that on average, trypophobic images are more uncomfortable to view compared to control images. They then documented that trypophobic images elicit a heightened physiological response among viewers, as measured by galvanic skin response. The heightened response was even found among individuals who did not meet the diagnostic criteria of trypophobia and was unrelated to participants’ general level of anxiety.

His album “This Little Light” has been streamed in 23 countries, was listed as the #2 album on Gaia Prime Radio, and was listed as one of the “Best of 2016” on the Audiosyncracy radio program.

ach place carries a human memory with it,” says Aaron Abeyta. It is from such memories that his stories arise.

For Abeyta, those places and memories stretch back to the mid-1840s, when his forebears settled with their herds of sheep in the southern San Luis Valley, then part of New Mexico Territory. His family’s presence there spans nine generations on his mother’s side, eight on his dad’s. In addition to being an English professor at Adams State and an award-winning author, Abeyta is also mayor of the Town of Antonito. And his family still raises sheep. “I’m from here,” he said. “It’s my heart home.”

Abeyta’s first book of poetry, colcha, won the 2002 American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation, as well as the 2001 Colorado Book Award for Poetry. The title poem won him the 1998 Colorado Council on the Arts Fellowship for Poetry. He next published the poetry collection As Orion Falls and the novel Rise, Do Not Be Afraid, which was a finalist for the Colorado Book Award. Letters from the Headwaters is just that – poems in letter form that reflect on the place he calls home. His work is also featured in Tzimtzum, 5 Contemporary Poets Lend Us Their Hearts.

Abeyta’s most recent honor is a 2017 Governor's Creative Leadership Award from Colorado Creative Industries. He was recognized in the arts and community action category for his “leadership and commitment to improving Antonito and the San Luis Valley through written word, public service, and community involvement.” Those efforts are one and the same for Abeyta, who said,

“We make each place our own by the things we return to it.”

As mayor, he’s working to upgrade Antonito’s infrastructure. As a board member of Conejos Clean Water, he opposed rail transport of nuclear waste through the San Luis Valley.

The valley’s expansive landscape and sometimes harsh environment are as central to Abeyta’s work as the human characters whose lives and deaths he illumines with details of work, love, and faith. Woven through his poetry and prose are Spanish phrases, Hispanic customs, ranching lore, and Catholic traditions. He conjures beauty even when speaking of loss.

In “story,” Abeyta writes, Human emotion is the second most true thing on earth; besides family it is the only thing we can always identify. Emotion is our memory . . . a poem without family or emotion is, to me, nothing more than letters upon letters, the sound of hoofbeats without ever having seen a horse.

“I don’t consider myself the author, but the conduit to tell other people’s stories,” he said. That’s the rationale behind his penchant for lowercase type in his poetry and signature: aaron a. abeyta. “These are lives no one would write about, for people no one considered worthy. These are my own people.”

– People like Serafin, who is also the subject of Abeyta’s latest work, a novel he hopes to complete this summer. The book grew out of his essay “Wilderness in Four Parts or Why We Cannot Mention My Great-Grandfather’s Name.” In that piece, he writes: My great-grandfather was named Serafin; it was also my abuelito’s middle name. My great-grandfather’s name was not a sin, but it was treated as such. . . I know this. He abandoned his family, an abandonment so complete that my grandfather chose erasure, an absolute and collective deletion of his father, as his vengeance.

During his sabbatical last fall, Abeyta uncovered conflicting versions of the man’s life that he worked to reconcile, sifting through both family recollections and archival records. “It became very complex. I had to connect a lot of dots.”

As he absorbed new information, Abeyta restarted the novel twice, first changing the narrator from first person to third person, then finally combining both points of view. That creative process demonstrates, “You never know what you’re going to write until it writes itself.”

As a professor, Abeyta feels education is a form of liberation. “My goal is for students to be able to recognize the trials and obstacles they face. My approach is, let’s study the oppressive forces, where they come from. That way you’re aware of your enemy and might be able to overcome.” In that regard, Abeyta leads by example.

I never saw Dempsey fight Tunney or Willard, but I saw him fight your greatgrandpa. Jack walked across that platform like a storm and Serafin just stood there, his body caked with the dirt of other men’s fields, his hands balled up and at his waist, like he was too tired to lift them, and I will never forget the way Jack shook his head after your great-grandpa hit him the first time, like maybe he knew he had really been hit and maybe it wasn’t going to be so easy. It is not from the cold. They huddle together for warmth, their bodies like pills in a bottle, and the snow falls, and the snow falls, and the snow falls, and the sheep do not move, and the sheep do not move, and in the most basic sense of the word, they suffocate beneath a slow avalanche of accumulated snow. Perhaps it is akin to inanity, that even when the snow is at their eyes, the sheep remain motionless as windows, witness to their own demise but patient, a primal faith that their shepherd will arrive and save them.

When he first learned about Serafin, who died four months before Abeyta’s birth, the story was that he had an affair with his boss’ wife; in retaliation, the boss framed him for embezzlement.

Abeyta later discovered Serafin did spend time in prison, but had previously been a teacher in Trinidad, Colorado. Abeyta heard another story that had become legend on the other side of his family:

The commissions premiered at the January convention of the Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA). The Adams State Winds & Percussion Ensemble performed new works by three well-known composers, as well as by three Adams State students and one alumna. The event drew several hundred music educators from K-12 schools, colleges, and universities across the state.

“These works were commissioned specifically for our ensemble and reflect the heritage, culture, and geography of the San Luis Valley,” noted Dr. Beth Robison, department chair, professor, and director of choral activities. “The nature and construction of these pieces will also provide educational and performance opportunities for underserved populations and music programs.” Smaller, rural schools may not be able to support full orchestration, so the project’s pieces are suitable for smaller ensembles.

Internationally renowned composer Dr. Jack Stamp personally conducted the premier performance of his piece, San Luis Snapshots. “Dr. Stamp was very generous in donating his time and very interested in the project. We were thrilled he was willing to come and work with our students and conduct his piece at the conference,” Robison said. Also performed were works by composers David J. Pierce and Dr. Jennifer K. Bellor.

seasons. He composed the piece for Adams State Director of Bands Dr. Angela Winter on horn with the Winds & Percussion Ensemble.

Bellor’s piece, Querencia, derives from the Spanish verb meaning “to desire” and is used to describe a place where one feels safe and at home. A native of South Texas, Pierce drew on his family’s Hispanic and ranching heritage for the composition El Ranchero, which depicts the life of a rancher.

Alumna Chelsea Oden ’13 was inspired to write A World in this Grain of Sand by the geological processes that formed the San Luis Valley, where she grew up. “The mountains and the dunes are a really big part of my connection with the valley. I thought it would be neat to do a composition on processes that formed the area, which are really incredible,” she said. Her work mimics rifting, the eruption of La Garita Caldera, and sedimentation. The piece concludes with the melody from the hymn, For the Beauty of the Earth, which she

exploring equity through music The San Luis Valley Cultural Commission Project grew out of the Music Department’s initiative, ETHOS: Exploring Equity through Music. It is an overarching, multi-year project promoting equity and diversity issues in the programming of music ensembles and the development of new curricula. “We can use the project both to recruit students and to celebrate and educate about the diversity and culture of the San Luis Valley through music,” Robison said.

She explained ETHOS is a Greek word meaning “character” that is also used to refer to the power of music to influence listeners’ emotions, behaviors, and even morals. “Music has always been a reflection of society and culture, both the positive and negative aspects,” she added.

A clarinetist with a B.A. in music, composition emphasis, Oden is now a graduate teaching fellow and doctoral candidate in music theory at the University of Oregon. “I think the whole project is really incredible. It’s really celebrating the art of collaboration – what else is music about than connecting people?” Oden said.

Graduate student John Brindle, who has taught music for 19 years at Prairie Middle School in the Cherry Creek School District in Colorado, also drew on his valley experiences for his composition, Valle Viejo. He heard his piece performed for the first time at the CMEA convention. “It was very exciting to hear my ideas come to life. It’s very different than hearing it in my head, or on the computer. It was fantastic,” he said.

Brindle’s overture-style piece has five main sections that represent the experiences of the valley’s Native Americans and of Spanish and Mexican settlers. He credits Winter for suggesting he try his hand at composing. “I probably wouldn’t have done it without her encouragement. I may have been bitten by the bug. I’ve had a million other ideas roll through my mind.” To top off the experience of having his work performed live, a music publisher approached him following the concert.

Brindle will complete his M.A. in music education this spring. “I pick up information on a daily basis that I can use immediately in my classroom.”

Mt. Blanca, Colorado’s fifth highest mountain at 14,344 feet, drew undergraduates Brandi Quinn and Ryan Watters to portray the cultures that have thrived in its shadow. Both also performed with the ensemble at the premier – Quinn on trumpet, Watters on saxophone.

“I was a little skeptical about the performance . . . what if no one liked it? But it got a standing ovation,” Quinn said. “I could feel the emotions of the audience, and all these band directors from Colorado heard me.”

Her piece, Sisnaajini, Dawn Mountain, refers to the Diné (Navajo) name for the peak, which marks the eastern border of their homeland. “The legend says that the Holy people traveled to the mountain by rainbow and sunbeams to decorate it,” Quinn explained. “Wherever you are in the valley, you can see Mt. Blanca. It really represents us well.” A sophomore with three majors – music composition, trumpet performance, and music education – Quinn would like to compose movie scores.

Watters, who plays several instruments and has written music previously, was a music major before changing to a double major in geology and chemistry. “I wanted to write relating to my own interests. The Blanca Massif is a huge prominence and is the root of the Native American and Hispanic

“Even as a young child, I was interested in light traveling through color, as it does in stained glass. Although I have worked in several other mediums, I consistently come back to this one, my favorite. The piece in the Adams State board room (top center) remains my favorite, because aspen trees and mountains are a mainstay in my work. The Luther Bean Museum entry panel is my depiction of our mighty Rio Grande and a few of its environs. The little insets represent fish, flora, fauna, and crops of the area. I am deeply honored to have work installed in my beloved alma mater.

Billy Adams, a Colorado legislator who would later become governor (1927-1933), worked for three decades before obtaining the funding appropriation to found Adams State Normal School in 1921. He was passionate about improving the quality of teacher education in the San Luis Valley.

With only a grade school education, Billy Adams came to the San Luis Valley in 1879 at the age of 17 to begin ranching. Within three years, he was mayor of Alamosa. In 1886, he was elected to the state legislature as a representative and became a state senator two years later. He also helped to establish Colorado Agricultural College at Fort Collins, the Colorado State Teachers College at Greeley, and Western State College at Gunnison.

Governor reflects Billy Adams’ love of being in the saddle on his ranch. He always considered Alamosa his home and is buried in the Alamosa Cemetery. His memorial service was held in Richardson Hall Auditorium.

Bob Booth ‘89 “As the artist, I desired to bridge generation gaps to show our shared history at Adams State – Billy Adams, our founder.”

Booth’s vision for Governor was to depict Billy Adams gathering cattle from the mountain range and driving them to his Alamosa ranch. The sculpture can be viewed from 360 degrees.

The bronze shows Billy Adams on his horse, Charly Boy, complete with his SC Gallop saddle and two of his livestock brands. He is depicted in a small brim Stetson hat and suit, which were his trademark attire, whether on the ranch or at the State Capitol.

Huberto Maestas ‘84 Huberto Maestas ‘84 is well known for his life-sized bronze Stations of the Cross in San Luis, Colo., where he lives. First edition maquettes of the sculptures are in the permanent collection of the Vatican Museum, Rome, Italy. His work is also found in many national public and private collections, and is exhibited internationally.

He considers his artwork a reflection of the human spirit. “It is in these intangible events that my art takes an intimate look at the moment: the strength of perseverance, power, struggle, and dignity in sculptural form.

“One’s spiritual journey is sacred. My works of art are meant to reach into your being to evoke emotion, to move you, and to give way to creative thought and meaning. The art of sculpture tells a story, of bridging the past with the present, and of visualizing dreams that come alive by the feel and touch of a sculpture.

“Art can heal, challenge, and stimulate us to define our spiritual voice. It is the viewer who ultimately defines their own experience. There is an endurance that comes with being an artist, a restless search for the right form, or the perfect pose, yet the pleasure it takes to create makes it all worthwhile.”

Evelyn McLean “My work explores the intricacies and structures of natural forms by representing them much larger than life, in order to invite viewers to discover what is often unseen or overlooked.

“The two paintings created for Richardson Hall are micro landscapes from the San Luis Valley, portraying both the dry piñon/juniper forest floor and the watery milieu below Zapata Falls. Exploring these scenes on a grand scale begs an intimacy with some of the common forms, colors, and textures of the valley.”

Rita Roberts Rita Roberts has been living in and painting the San Luis Valley for 17 years. Her work gives the valley national representation through competitions, gallery exhibitions, and collections across the country.

She said of her piece in Richardson Hall, “A subtle grid pattern appears and disappears through layers of clouds above a harvested field in this landscape. It is indicative of the San Luis Valley’s agricultural heritage. The grid is integrated with the clouds as a statement of how closely related farms and crops are to the weather in this high elevation valley. The square format of the piece, plus the squares of the grid, represent the patchwork of farmlands which cover the San Luis Valley like a quilt pattern, as seen from the sky.”

Jeremy Elliott Jeremy Elliott’s work predominantly consists of landscape images, both in color and black and white.

"I like doing landscapes because it gives me an excuse to get out in nature.

Plus, living in an area like the San Luis Valley, there is no shortage of subject matter to shoot. I think that my favorite place to shoot is the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve. It feels like the dunes are alive. They are always changing, and the lighting is always different. Each time I have been there, it has been a different experience. Springtime is my favorite, though. The mountains still have snow on them, and Medano Creek is running through the park."

Jasmine Little ‘15 “Wheeler Geologic Area is so remote, it almost felt like I was staking my claim on that wilderness area by painting it. I think there is something magical about painting; you can bring to life an experience or an idea of an experience without having to hold it accountable for accuracy. The painting is simply meant to convey a feeling of an idea of a place.

Painting allows you to dream and romanticize daily life in a permanent way. And the painting itself can function as a metaphor for accomplishing something somewhat painstaking and exhaustive. I hope the painting inspires more people to either make the trek to Wheeler or make a painting!”

accounting alumni honor impact of gerald corning Having achieved success in his profession, James “Jamie” Harvey ’83 established the Gerald Corning Endowment in honor of his Adams State University mentor and emeritus professor of accounting. The Gerald Corning Endowment will be awarded to a student who is eligible to sit for the CPA exam.

Corning retired from the School of Business in 2010, after teaching accounting courses for 35 years. “I am a little overwhelmed by this honor. I tried to provide my students with the skills they needed to succeed and to push themselves as much as they could,” said Corning, who reGerald Corning presides over the spring 2009 lates to the presCommencement Ceremony as Faculty Marshal. sure his students experience when prepping for the exam. “I went through it myself. A little help makes a lot of difference.”

Now in his fifteenth year as the Chief Financial Officer for USA Swimming in Colorado Springs, Harvey remembers Corning being available after class and willing to provide extra help and offer great advice when preparing students for the CPA exam. “He was confident in your abilities, even if you had doubts.”

One contributor to the scholarship is Karla Willschau ’84, managing partner for the Alamosa Certified Public Accounting firm Wall, Smith, Bateman, Inc. She agreed, “Mr. Corning was always interested in what I was doing, whether it was school or work related. He was committed to preparing students to take the CPA exam, and because of that, Adams State experienced a high pass rate. He kept up with how his students did on the exam.” She added, “My education at Adams State made a huge impact on my professional life. Working in the San Luis Valley, I see Adams State graduates working in various businesses every day, and the level of sophistication is high because of Adams State.”

Both Harvey and Willschau encourage current and future accounting students to study hard and keep to a higher standard. Harvey noted, “My degree was a critical prerequisite for entry into the accounting profession. A liberal arts education prepares a person to thrive and contribute in a complex and diverse world.”

the inaugural teri mccartney faculty award in the creative arts was granted to dr. john taylor, professor of theatre.

The unique endowment was established by Dr. Teri McCartney ’87, ’92, emeritus professor of counselor education.

Taylor used the award to cover production expenses for the student acting company Will Act for Change, which is part of his Theatre and Social Change class. The project included eight short plays and a staged reading of a play based on Sinclair Lewis' classic novel It Can't Happen Here. This is the 80th anniversary of the play’s premier in President Franklin Roosevelt's Federal Theatre Project.

staying in touch Bill `56, `62 and Joyce `56 Matthews (Litchfield Park, AZ) celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on the RMS Queen Mary 2 last September.

Shirley Aragon Sumida `59, `66 (Lakewood, CO) retired from teaching in Denver Public schools. She and her husband, Kanji (who passed away 3 years ago), have a daughter, Jacqueline, who is a therapist in Lakewood, and a granddaughter, Tristan, who is in her 4th year of college in Boulder.

◗1960s Bob Miller `60 (North Las Vegas, NV) retired after teaching English for 38 years—30 years in the same room. He is now married to Sherrie, who was a friend from the 5th grade. They met up at their 49th class reunion. He has visited all 50 states, bicycled 17 European countries and 5 Hawaiian islands, and has owned 12 Corvettes and 9 Harley Davidsons.

Bill Woodward `61 (Las Vegas, NV) is fit as a fiddle at 82. He and his wife, Linda, live in Las Vegas from November to June each year. They return to the San Luis Valley from June to November. Bill says he and his wife are lazy and enjoy every minute of it. Linda enjoys doing genealogy, and Bill enjoys walking the dogs and watching the NFL and the NCAA. Felix Cordova `62, `65 (Manassa, CO) retired from elementary school teaching in 1992 and is now farming. He has a wonderful family.

Most of them are babysitting and homeschooling.

Dave “Och” Ochoa `63 (Henderson, NV) and his wife, Rita, have 4 children: Donna, Dave, Mike, and Lou. They also

have 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Robert Hidalgo `64 (Castro Valley, CA) has been retired for 14 years. He taught for 38 years in the San Leandro School District. He traveled to Spain with his wife, Debbie, and visited family that he had never met. It was a great joy and experience. He loves to go to casinos and raise veggies and avocados.

Donald `65 and Johanna `65 Crawford (Albuquerque, NM) celebrated 53 years of marriage this past August.

Yvonne Moulton `65 (Goodyear, AZ) has been working with 3rd graders as a volunteer tutor in reading and math for the past 3 years. She goes twice a week, all day. Sometimes they really sap her energy, but she loves them, and they love her.

Bernice Martinez `66 (Oakland, CA) continues to enjoy retirement and visiting her 94year-old mother. Her sisters, Ruth and Polly Holoubek `67, recently went on a safari to Africa (Tanzania and Zanzibar). They enjoyed seeing elephants and leopards. In addition, they interacted with the local villagers and participated in the local schools, learning about their educational system. En route to Africa, they also visited Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Ellwood Ervin `67 (Aurora, CO) went to the 39th Denver Film Festival and continued his legacy. He saw 52 films and programs, which is now his all-time best. He has now seen a total of 1,351 for all 39 film festivals. He also went to the 44th Biennial Alpha Phi Omega National Convention, held in Pittsburgh, PA, in December. The 2018 convention will be in Austin, Tex. This was his 23rd national convention.

John Guyer `68 (Wapello, IA) is a retired teacher and is now a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. He has a daughter, Jacqueline, who is a high school Spanish teacher, and a son, Jay, who has been in the US Coast Guard for 17 years and is a Lt. Commander.

Tom McCann `68 (Kearney, NE) retired from Kearney High School as a P.E. teacher and wrestling coach after 42 years and is now in his 5th year as an assistant wrestling coach at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. His wife,

Regina `68, retired from Kearney High School after 34 years and is a part-time adjunct professor at Central Community College, teaching science and adult education.

Frieda Havens `69 (Cuba, NM) began her journey as a public school teacher after leaving Adams State. She taught business education, physical education, and health education and coached girls sports. After some years as a teacher, she became Executive Director of Education for the Jicarilla Apache tribe. She was elected to the Jicarilla Tribal Council in 1980 and 1990, serving 2 terms. She retired in 2002 and moved out to her ranch, where she and her daughter, Gerrie, raise black angus cattle.

◗1970s Sandee Giletti Hay `70, `71 (Chandler, AZ) retired after spending 48 years in education. Her daughter, Quinn Hay-Falkner `94, and her family live in Alaska, where she teaches. Recently, Sandee spent 2 weeks in China. She visited Beijing, Xian (climbed the great wall), and Shanghai, where they attended the world expo.

Emily Trujillo-Vigil `70 (Gallina, NM) received her MA in Reading K-12 from the University of Colorado and received endorsements in bilingual education and school administration from New Mexico Highlands University. She taught high school Spanish and elementary grades at Jemez Mtn. Schools in Gallina, NM, for 17 years and served as an administrator at all levels at Jemez for 18 years. She is currently a member of the district’s school board.

Wendy Hoffman `71 (Los Alamos, NM) is a full-time granny nanny to Cam (5) and Cade (3), the sons of her son, Nick Hoffman `96.

She is also part-time granny nanny to James (6) and Joseph (4), sons of her daughter. She is having great fun!

Jimmy Lovato `71, `73 (Arvada, CO) dedicated his entire career to civil rights. He retired after 31 years with the US Department of Health-Civil Rights Office and the US EEOC. He served as a federal investigator with both agencies. He was promoted by the EEOC to State and Local Coordinator, to whom 6 state agencies, 2 local agencies, and 18 tribal employment rights offices reported. Dennis Karalfa `72 retired after 60 years as a church organist in various churches in central Pennsylvania.

Barbara Motes `72, `76 (La Vista, NE) retired in the spring of 2015 after 43 years of teaching and coaching in Colorado, Alaska, Ohio, Maine, and Iowa. She is enjoying this phase of her life!

Bob Wood `72 (Florence, CO) was chosen as the Grand Marshal of the Florence Pioneer Day Parade.

He and his wife, Sue Nagoda Wood `73, led the parade and participated in other functions of the celebration. Wood, publisher of The Florence Citizen newspaper for 30 years, was selected for his civic contributions to the community.

Rodger `73 and Cathy `74 Bell (Fort Collins, CO) moved closer to Ft. Collins last summer.

They love the area and look forward to their next visit to Alamosa. They toured ASU last summer and walked all over campus and thought it looked great.

Elizabeth Martinez `74 (Albuquerque, NM) retired from Albuquerque Public Schools as a guidance counselor. She then tutored elementary children in reading and math through Youth Development Incorporated.

great stories Dr. Thomas Dodd ‘95, Fort Collins, CO, was named the 2017 National Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The award was announced at a surprise school assembly at Lesher Middle School in the Poudre School District, where he has been principal for twelve years. That followed his selection as the 2016 Colorado Middle Level and Secondary Principal of the Year.

NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti noted, "Tom Dodd believes deeply that student equity is the true path to school-wide success, and he lives that belief in his priorities and decisions.”

Christine Delaney-Haynes `75 (Placerville, CO) has been married for 30 years. She retired in June 2010 from Telluride School District, where she now works part-time as technology consultant and online facilitator for eNetLearning.org, which provides online professional development for educators.

Neysa Dickey `75 (Green Valley, AZ) worked for the National Park Service for 30 years. She began with NPS at the Great Sand Dunes in the summer of 1974 as a desk girl, working for Southwest Parks and Monuments Association. She ended her career with 11 years in Yellowstone and retired in 2006. She now lives 6 months in Green Valley, Ariz., and 6 months in Bozeman, Mont.

She is active in community chorus and local theater. She loves to walk, hike, read, and play with her cat, Boo. Mark Rose `75 (Olney, MD) is semi-retired doing accounting work and temporarily helping out his daughter in San Diego with her organic juice and smoothie business, Juice Wave (www.juicewavesd.com). He has at least 3 kids and 4 grandkids to date, and when not in San Diego, he’s at home in Olney with his lovely wife of 42 years, Karen.

Patrick Hannigan `76 (Tuxedo Park, NY) retired from a 38-year career at the New York Post, where he was the night sports editor. He is continuing part-time, writing insightful and inciteful baseball and football columns. Additionally, he is enjoying life with his wife and endeavoring to lower his golf handicap, which are mutually exclusive pursuits.

Dodd has led the reinvention of the school's climate through the "Anchor Down" initiative. All teachers wear anchor pins to symbolize their firm, stable role as advocates for each child.

Under Dodd's leadership, the school eliminated de facto academic tracking by opening the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP) from a select few to the whole school. Dodd is a regular presenter at state and national conferences. He has led his school to be named a MetLife Foundation-NASSP Breakthrough School in 2012 and a National School to Watch every year since 2014 by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform.

Dodd holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Penn State University and two master’s degrees from Adams State, one in physical education and one in social studies education.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA.

Carey Martinez Sanchez `77 (Superior, CO) writes, “I am happily semi-retired. I have been working with teacher candidates in their student teaching semester from the University of Colorado - Boulder for the past 8 years.

◗1990s Karen Bunce Sheff `92 (Commerce City, CO) is president of the Colorado Business Educators and a teacher at the Adams City High School of Business. On Saturdays from January through March, she runs a free tax site with help from her students. Student volunteers are IRS certified. The service is provided to members of the community who have a household income of less than $54,000. “It is a very rewarding real-world experience for my students,” Sheff said.

Sarah Menapace `93 (Farmington, NM) writes, “Retirement means travel, so we took a Celebrity Cruise through the Baltic Sea this past June. We visited Stockholm, Sweden; Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg, Russia; Tallinn, Estonia; Berlin, Germany; Copenhagen, Denmark; Bruges, Belgium; and Amsterdam, Netherlands. After years of teaching The Diary of Anne Frank to middle schoolers, I finally got to visit the Anne Frank House and see it for myself. I am still enjoying golf, swimming, hiking, scrapbooking, reading, writing, substitute teaching and time for myself. Plus, I turned 60 this March.”

Frank Westcott `93 (Grand Junction, CO) is married to Heidi, and they have 4 children: Lizz Peterson, Tanner Peterson, Bailey Westcott, and Jay Westcott. Simon McLaren `98 recently completed a 20-year career with US Navy Servicing in communication and technology in Florida, California, and Maryland. He is now in the DC area, continuing to provide leadership and technology expertise to further the defense of the nation. His first post was as a communications officer for the Naval Aviation School Command. He was then stationed as communications officer in the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center in Monterey, CA. While in Monterey, he completed his master’s degree in computer science at the Naval Postgraduate School, completing a thesis on the Practical Application and Public Opinion of the use of Biometrics. McLaren was then assigned to the Naval Postgraduate School, serving in three separate roles: first, as the Director of Innovative Enterprises Solutions, then as the Director of Cyber Infrastructure, and finally, as a Cyber Security and Privacy Officer. He was then assigned to the Navy Information Operations Command in Maryland.

◗2000s Jessica Flores `01 (Las Vegas, NV), played basketball overseas for a short period. She then moved to Las Vegas and coached high school basketball and youth soccer. While in Las Vegas, she also did background work in the movies and modeled.

She is now working at a civil engineering firm and still playing as many sports as she can.

Jennifer Ybarra `02 (North Las Vegas, NV) taught music for 1 year in Colorado, then moved to Las Vegas and taught music for 8 years. She earned two master’s degrees at University of NevadaLas Vegas. Her degrees are in education in autism and developmental delay. She has been teaching special needs preschool for the past 5 years.

Veronica Vigil `06 (Gallina, NM) earned her Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from University of New Mexico in 2004. She taught kindergarten for 6 years and was promoted to ESL coordinator in 2015. In 2016, she sold her starter home and purchased another. She enjoys spending time with her family on their ranch in northern New Mexico.

Clinton McDonald `08 (Brush, CO) is the choir teacher at Fort Morgan High School. His wife, Danielle `08, is a family physician and obstetrician. They have two children.

Clinton received a master's degree in music education from Wichita State University in Kansas in 2014. He previously taught music and drama in Deertrail, Colorado, from 2008 to 2012, in Valley Center, Kansas, from 2012 to 2015, and in Otis, Colorado, in 2015-16. At those schools, he was involved in directing the musicals and spring plays. In his free time, he enjoys welding and woodworking.

What’s in a name? Plenty. Several ASU alumni have the fortune, or misfortune, to have celebrity namesakes. One of them is Adams State’s Jennifer Garner `02. She originally moved to Las Vegas, Nev., to be a high school athletic trainer.

Since then, she has worked in the performing arts and now teaches sports medicine at a career and technical academy. She has a 9-year-old and is getting married in the summer of 2018. Her fiancé has a daughter, so her family will be growing. And since her surname will also be changing, so will her “celebrity” status.

Jeni Carter `09, `12 (Alamosa, CO) is the assistant director of Student Life at Adams State. She received the NASPA IVWest Conference Colorado New Professional Rising Star Award at the annual Student Affairs Professional Conference, held in November in St. Louis.

She was also selected for membership in the College Personnel Association of Colorado, a state division of the American College Personnel Association. She is the only representative from a small rural college, which helps put Adams on the map and includes more opportunities for Adams State student affairs professionals to become involved with the profession. She assisted in coordinating the CPAC conference in Denver last year and will be the conference coordinator for next year.

◗2010s John Auxier `10 (Knoxville, TN) completed his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville with Dr. George K. Schweitzer in inorganic chemistry, focusing on material development for thermal neutron detection. He was a postdoc for Dr. Howard Hall in setting up the UT Radiochemistry Center of Excellence, where he has been involved with projects for the development of surrogate nuclear melt glass, advanced chemical separations, and new detection platforms for remote radiation detection applications. As a research associate professor at UTK, with joint appointments at the Y-12 National Security Complex, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and LANL, his current interests involve research in nuclear forensics, nuclear and radiochemical separation, and radiation detection applications. As part of his research, he has published numerous scientific articles on nuclear forensics and radiation detection material development and received patents on rapid separations and surrogate forensics materials.

Matthew Basinger `12 (Sacramento, CA) writes, “After graduating from Adams with my degree in sociology, I went on to graduate school at University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and received my MA in sociology. I worked as an intern at the Department of Corrections while at UCCS, and that really helped me gain some work experience. Now, I work at California State University-Sacramento as a research analyst for the Office of Institutional Research. My time at Adams prepared me for graduate school, and overall my experience was great!”

Tiffany Leggett `13 (Phoenix, AZ) and her boyfriend, Oscar, are enjoying their new house in Phoenix. They spend their summers traveling to Kentucky and Minnesota. This year she checked off a major item from her bucket list: go to the Kentucky Derby!

Camille Quinlin Kral `14 (Sterling, CO) is a kindergarten teacher at Sherman Early Childhood Center in Fort Morgan. A Fort Morgan native, she lives in the city with her husband, Brenton Kral, and their 1-year-old, Addison.

Brenton works with Kral Construction Services. Camille previously taught first grade at Thomson Primary School in Brush during 2014-15. In her free time, she enjoys grilling and gardening. She is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brush.

Tori Martinez `15 (La Jara, CO) was named Executive Director of the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area.

Michelle Vance `15 (Sterling, CO) is choir director at Sterling Middle School. Prior to working for the RE-1 school district, she was a long-term substitute at Alamosa Elementary, where she taught music to kindergarten through second grade. She decided to go into education because her high school choir teacher was basically a second mother to her — supporting her, to this day, through everything.

Renae Aguirre `16 (Fort Morgan, CO) is a third-grade teacher at Pioneer Elementary School in Fort Morgan. A Fort Morgan native, she continues to live in the city with her husband, Doug, and their children, 10-year-old Noah and 4-year-old Aubrie. Doug is a physical therapy assistant at Colorado Plains Medical Center. Ranae was previously a teacher's assistant at Pioneer over the 2014-15 school year. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, as well as bicycle riding and being outdoors.

Art Department alumnus Jesse Crock '04, '10 showed his paintings in Hatfield Gallery and gave an artist’s lecture. Jacob Sorling '11 conducted comedy improv workshops as part of the Department of English, Theatre and Communication Distinguished Guest Series.

Based in Los Angeles, Sorling and Blakely form the comedy improv Buddy Puzzle. "We hope to spread a deeper understanding of improv and show improvisation in a new light," Sorling said. "I went into acting and improvisation because it was the one thing I always craved to do. It is challenging and so expansive."

He said Adams State’s theatre program gave him excellent career preparation. "I learned about all the sides of creating theatre that I would be lost without. Adams State helped me feel fearless in creating my own content and helped me land multiple jobs.

Adams State's Theatre is also run the same way professional theatres are run, so the transition into the world of professional theatre is seamless."

Crock’s exhibit, Painting the Colorado Experience, celebrated the Colorado outdoors. The rich color and sharp contrast of his acrylic paintings capture the vibrant Colorado landscape. He directed a portion of sales from the exhibit to the Sue Patterson Memorial Art Scholarship fund.

Now an elementary art teacher in Golden, Colo., Crock’s creative work stems from his love of climbing, cycling, and the outdoors; he brings the viewer's eye to places that are not often painted. He finds he often connects his work with the playfulness of his students and is inspired by the energy they bring to the classroom.

Crock’s work has been commissioned for the Ouray Ice Climbing Festival, the FIBArk Kayaking Festival in Salida, and for craft beer labels for the Eddyline Brewery in Buena Vista. He was chosen as the 2012 Golden Fine Arts Featured Artist and recently wrote Coloring Colorado. He has created several large outdoor murals in the city of Golden. Tammie Smith `16 (Denton, MT) is the K-12 guidance counselor at Fairfield public school in Choteau, Mont. She is a Texas native and a Baylor graduate who recently completed her master’s degree in school counseling at ASU. “I have been involved with education for the

past 12 years,” Smith said. “Prior to teaching I worked with students along with my husband, Bruce, when he served as a missionary and a youth pastor in Texas and Arkansas.”

women’s indoor track & field

The 2016-17 indoor track & field campaign resulted in an RMAC Championship and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, March 11. At the national meet, the Grizzlies posted a Sydney Gidabuday team score of 41, as Sydney Gidabuday (7:56.88) set the 3000m championship and NCAA DII record for a 200meter track. Oliver Aitchison (4:06.16) finished second in the mile, as Sam Reid (18.48m) had a personal-best shot put throw to earn third place. The Distance Medley Relay (DMR) placed third in 9:40.145, a mere .001 of a second behind Western Oregon. Head Coach Rock Light ’80 earned Coach of the Year honors from the RMAC and South Central Regional. Gidabuday was named RMAC and South Central Region Track Athlete of the Year. The season concluded with 10 First Team All-RMAC nods, 11 Second Team All-RMAC picks, 19 USTFCCCA All-Region selections, and 11 total All-American honors.

The Grizzlies won the program’s fourth indoor national title, March 11, in Birmingham, Alabama, at the NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championships. It was the first indoor national title for the ASU women since 2014. ASU posted a team score of 47, as Dianna Johnson (7.34) won a title in the 60m dash, as did the DMR (11:15.28) which ran to an NCAA DII and school record in the event. Other notable finishes came from Sunayna Wahi’s (23.67) runner-up finish in the 200m dash, and Jenna Thurman’s second in the 3000m (9:23.78) and third in the 5000m (16:37.76). Thurman’s indoor season consisted of four NCAA DII automatic qualifying times and another auto time as a member of the top-ranked DMR. Thurman ranked no lower than fourth nationally in each event in which she owned an auto qualifying time. She also set indoor school records for the mile (4:42.14) and 3000m (9:28.85). After the championship run, Head Coach Rock Light ’80 was named National Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year at the NCAA DII level. Light was also named Coach of the Year by the RMAC and South Central Region. Meanwhile, Thurman was tabbed South Central Track Athlete of the Year. Prior to their national title, the Grizzlies also won an RMAC team title. The season concluded with 23 USTFCCCA All-Region picks, 12 First Team and four Second Team All-RMAC selections, 10 First Team All-American honors, and four Second Team AllAmerican nods.

swimming The season came to a close February 8-11 at the RMAC Championships in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Grizzlies placed 7th overall, with 207 points. Senior Marissa Mantzey led the team at the championships. She swam to a pair of NCAA Division II “B” cuts in the 100 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle. Individually, Mantzey placed 5th in the 100 yard backstroke (56.76), 8th in the 200 yard backstroke (2:08.81), and 8th in the 50 yard freestyle (23.97). Head coach Dan France announced his resignation at the conclusion of the season.

The Grizzlies ended the season with a 2-23 overall record, picking up both wins on the road. The Grizzlies took down Northern New Mexico College, 52-47, and later picked up a narrow 72-70 win at New Mexico Highlands University. Senior guard Cydney McHenry led the team with 9.9 points per game, while redshirt junior forward Lejla Hadzialijagic netted 7.3 points per game.

men’s basketball The Grizzlies advanced into the RMAC Tournament for the third consecutive season under second-year head coach Russ Caton. Season highlights included a thrilling 77-76 home win over Regis University, made possible by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from senior guard Kevin Dorsey. An 8581 road victory against Metropolitan State University of Denver was ASU’s first win at Metro State since 1992.

Junior guard Brandon Sly led the team with 16.8 points per game, finishing his season with a Second Team AllBrandon Sly RMAC nod.

wrestling The Grizzlies wrapped up the 201617 campaign with two national qualifiers: Martin Ramirez and Darek Huff.

Huff advanced to the second day of competition in the 125 weight class at the NCAA DII Championships, but ultimately fell short of the podium with his 2-2 tournament record. In the 133 weight class, Ramirez went 0-2 to conclude his All-American wrestling career.

Earlier in the season, ASU defeated then No. 18 Fort Hays State University, 28-14. Adams State posted a 1-10 dual record on the season.

men’s xc named scholar team of the year After running to the program's 24th overall national championship in November, men's cross country added another title: the 2016 NCAA Division II Men's Cross Country Scholar Team of the Year, named by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). During the 2016 season, the ASU men posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.14.

The Grizzlies have won the award four of the last five seasons, for a total of six since the award's inception in 2006.

Men’s cross country individual academic award winners included Kale Adams, Brian Glassey, Chandler Reid, and Jackson Sayler. Four members of the women's cross country squad also earned individual academic awards: Kaylee Bogina, Eilish Flanagan, Rachel Kresl, and Jenna Thurman. The women’s team earned the Scholar Team of the Year Award five times since 2006.

sportswomen of colorado honors martin Lauren Martin ’14, ’16 received a Sportswomen of Colorado Award in March. The 10-time All-American was one of 54 winners representing the best female athletes, coaches, and teams in numerous sports from the prep, collegiate, and professional ranks. Martin accepted her award from five-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer, Missy Franklin.

"It was a great honor to get an award amongst such great women from all different sports and walks of life," said Martin, the award's recipient for college track.

She was also named the NCAA DII 2016 Scholar Athlete of the Year for track, as well as 2016 RMAC Woman of the Year and a Top 30 Finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year.

Martin’s many athletic achievements include four individual national championships and five RMAC championships.
