president’s letter: asu addresses accreditation concerns As an Adams State graduate, you experienced and appreciate our commitment to student success. Just as that commitment has never wavered, neither has our commitment to meeting accreditation criteria. ASU was recently placed on “probation” by our accrediting agency, the Higher Dr. Beverlee J. McClure Learning Commission (HLC).

We are working to resolve this situation and are requesting the HLC action be changed to a “notice.” I assure you our accreditation remains intact.

This issue had its genesis in a Chronicle of Higher Education article in late 2014.

It recounted “Confessions of a Fixer,” an unidentified person who made a business of cheating for academically ineligible student-athletes at other institutions.

He admitted to falsifying information and posing as the athletes to take exams for correspondence course transfer credit through ASU Extended Studies. No Adams State coaches or student-athletes were involved.

Adams State immediately began addressing this alleged issue and commissioned reports from two external entities, including the Colorado Department of Higher Education. That review, submitted in May, found “no evidence of instances of ignoring guidelines or policies . . . or negligence. In some areas, the institution had already identified procedural changes to address issues related to [student] authentication and academic integrity, and had begun to initiate those changes.” We have been proactive in identifying and addressing concerns in a manner that demonstrates continuous improvement.

Noting Adams State’s service to generations of students and contributions to Colorado’s economic vitality, Colorado Lt. Governor Joe Garcia, executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, said, “The Colorado Commission on Higher Education is optimistic that ASU’s leadership will be able to work with its regional accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission, to ensure the quality and rigor of its online course offerings and that it will demonstrate that it has acted quickly to meet all of the HLC’s quality assurance requirements. The Colorado Department of Higher Education will continue to offer advice and support to ASU as its administration and governing board move forward to resolve the issue.”

Last September, the HLC conducted an advisory visit on campus. We received correspondence regarding the report on January 7. Our response reiterated that Adams State had already addressed all of the concerns raised in the initial Chronicle of Higher Education articles, none of which were identified in the advisory report. We have made significant progress in correcting additional findings, as well.

We are stunned by this action. It appears the HLC had already determined the outcome of this review, completely disregarding our actions to correct the situation. Prior to the HLC action, I made several requests to address the HLC Board directly and to speak with its president. Those requests were ignored.

We have requested HLC review all the information we had submitted, which I believe will lead to a reversal of this onerous decision.

Adams State’s economic impact on SLV estimated at $78 million the economic impact of adams state university on colorado’s san luis valley exceeds $78 million, according to a study conducted by dr. liz thomas hensley ‘05, asst. professor of marketing, and senior marketing student jake heaton. they presented their report to the university’s board of trustees, dec. 18.

Based on data from the 2014-15 academic year, the report concluded the university’s total economic impact on the SLV was $78,078,185. Statewide, that impact was $111,820,411.

“We wanted to illustrate the economic importance of Adams State University to the Valley. This study reflects the economic devastation that could result if the University were no longer here,” said Adams State President Beverlee J. McClure.

The largest spending component was for student living and personal expenses. In addition, the report found that one additional job in the valley is created for every two positions at the university. One of the valley’s largest employers, Adams State employs 808 faculty and staff.

The new report drew upon the 2005 Economic Impact Analysis and Report conducted by John S. Stump of the San Luis Valley Development Resources Group (DRG). Hew Hallock, current director of research at DRG, consulted on the new report. Over the last decade, Adams State’s economic impact on the valley increased more than $8 million. As in 2005, the new report notes the university’s economic impact

The new report uses two multipliers to calculate the impact of various types of spending, according to best practices.

A multiplier of 1.9 was applied to direct purchases and expenditures made by the university; all other spending categories were multiplied by 1.7. The report states: “Multipliers provide a simple measure of the domino effect that occurs when money turnover takes place in a local economy.”

Those figures do not include last year’s $13 million Richardson Hall renovation project, of which roughly 35 percent, or $4.5 million, was spent on local contractors and subcontractors. Hensley noted the impact of campus visitor and events was a conservative estimate: “It doesn’t include all possible events.” Visiting intercollegiate athletic teams and fans contribute nearly a half million dollars alone.

The report also notes many positive, non-quantifiable impacts of the university, such as employee and student participation in the community, schools, churches, etc.

Luther Bean Museum to house Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center a quarter-million-dollar donation has made possible the establishment of the salazar rio grande del norte center at adams state’s luther bean museum, as well as a scholarship.

artifacts, internships and outreach The gift includes $100,000 to fund development of the Salazar Center and $50,000 to support center start-up, internships, and museum operations. The center will be located in the Luther Bean Museum’s second floor mezzanine in Richardson Hall. It will supplement the museum’s existing collection of artifacts that reflect the rich history and archaeology of the Rio Grande in Colorado. That past begins with Native Americans in the Rio Grande gorge, moves to Spanish exploration from Santa Fe into the San Luis Valley in

the 1700s, and continues with the first settlements in Colorado, begun immediately after the Mexican American War in 1848.

Key to the Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center will be creation of internships for students in a range of disciplines. A website and virtual gallery will promote opportunities for study and research by faculty, researchers, students, and the public, not only locally, but also nationally and internationally. Both the physical and virtual center will be available to the public by next January. Plans also call for partnering with area groups that promote the center’s ideals, such as the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area, Hilos Culturales, Regional BOCES, and the ASU Archeology Field School.

The recent $250,000 donation includes a $100,000 contribution to the Emma & Henry Salazar Memorial Scholarship Fund, recently established by the family. Descended from the valley’s earliest settlers, the Salazars continue to farm and ranch.

LeRoy Salazar said, “This scholarship fund is meant to support our parents’ belief in the power of education to help change the world for the better. My mother and father were not able to go to college, but their expectation was for all of us to obtain a college education, and all eight children did.”

Also among Emma and Henry Salazar’s children is former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar. He also served as Colorado’s Attorney General and then as a U.S. Senator for Colorado.

Their son John Salazar, former Commissioner of the Colorado Department of Agriculture and former U.S. representative from Colorado, is a 1982 graduate of Adams State. Other family members are Adams State alumni, as well.

McClure. “The Salazar family have long been staunch, active supporters of Adams State. This extremely generous gift will produce benefits that will extend well beyond the university and help expand the presence of the Luther Bean Museum.”

Adams State Trustee LeRoy Salazar explained the purpose of the center: “Culture and history form a part of the identity of a community. The Rio Grande del Norte Center will help to preserve the rich cultural heritage of our area.”

His family designated the gift following the January death of their matriarch, Emma Salazar. The donation includes a $100,000 contribution to the Emma & Henry Salazar Memorial Scholarship Fund for first-generation ASU students who are at least sophomores.

“It is great to have this legacy in place to recognize those who settled the upper Rio Grande area,” said Arnold Salazar ‘76, chair of the trustees (no relation). “The valley has a lot of proud heritages, and I want to use the Salazar Center as a jumping off point to preserve and share them all. This is what draws a community together.” He added the Salazar family has made a commitment to continue fundraising to build an endowment that will support the center into the future.

According to Tammy Lopez '91, '00, executive director of the ASU Foundation, the total includes $45,000 for ASU undergraduate students, while $66,000 is targeted to those pursuing advanced degrees at any university as nurse practitioner, nurse educator, or physician assistant. "Most of the students receiving this part of the scholarship are our faculty, or live here in the valley and are currently working in the field," Lopez said. "They are all taking classes on-line through other universities."

Dr. Shawn Elliott, director of the Nursing Program, appreciates the support. "This scholarship is a vital resource."

Dr. Tom Gilmore ‘67, ‘68, former Adams State president, and ASU Trustee Kathy Rogers, Rio Grande Savings and Loan Association vice president and director of marketing, are members of the El Pomar regional council. Gilmore said El Pomar is committed to helping improve the quality of life in the San Luis Valley for all of its residents. "Better quality and more access to medical care will be a real benefit to all the people living here."

According to Rogers, the original goal included assisting nursing students, most likely to work in the valley. "We hoped to alleviate some of our primary care access challenges in the SLV. We also achieved other positive outcomes, such as the provision of much needed nursing instructors for both ASU and Trinidad State Junior College.”

the caring for colorado foundation awarded a grant of $91,489 to adams state university’s nursing department to expand and enhance its online rn-to-bsn program.

“Our ultimate goal is to improve quality of healthcare in the San Luis Valley and surrounding region by increasing the number and diversity of BSN-trained nurses,” said Dr. Shawn Elliott, director of Nursing. “This very generous two-year grant will help us expand access to the program across southern Colorado.” She noted the capacity-building project will also help meet the state’s 2020 goal of increasing the number and diversity of nurses holding a BSN. “Our RN-to-BSN online program is both affordable and flexible, to meet the needs of working registered nurses from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds,” Elliott noted. The department recently revised its online RN-to-BSN program, based on feedback from nursing graduates.

The grant project aims to triple the number of students in Adams State’s program over the next two years, from 10 to 33, and to increase the proportion of Hispanic students in the program from ten to thirty percent. Overall minority representation will increase to 40 percent. Toward these goals, the grant will fund a new Nursing Department position of RNto-BSN Program Coordinator who will also teach nine credits in the program. A new recruitment plan with a strong diversity component will focus on rural areas across the San Luis Valley, southeast and southwest Colorado.

The grant project also includes a collaboration with the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence, which presents a community-based nurse mentoring component to connect local Hispanic nurses to Hispanic students in the program.

The new mentoring component will provide vital experiential learning for nursing students. “Students will be able to apply new knowledge and skills in community and work settings. Our curriculum imparts professional nursing standards with a focus on cultural diversity, community service, and rural health care, as established by our accrediting agency, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE),” Elliott said.

In 2011, the Caring for Colorado Foundation awarded a grant of $79,878 to the Nursing Department in support of a clinical placement coordinator/simulation lab facilitator position. “We are very grateful for the continuing support of the Caring for Colorado in building our nursing program and improving local health care.”

The San Luis Valley anticipates increased need for BSNtrained nurses as older nurses retire and more previously uninsured individuals enter the health care system due to health care reform.

Adams State University’s second doctoral degree and three other new academic programs were approved by the Board of Trustees, December 18. “These programs all address workforce needs within Colorado and the San Luis Valley and help prepare our students for growing careers fields,” said Board Chair Arnold Salazar ‘76.

Adams State President Beverlee J. McClure emphasized, “All of these programs are great examples of Adams State’s commitment to rural areas. They use online and off-campus delivery to provide students with schedule flexibility, in keeping with our mission to serve rural areas and underserved students.”

The Ed.D. in Leadership will launch after receiving approval from the Higher Learning Commission, which accredits the university. It is designed for educational leaders at all levels, particularly those educational reformers, policymakers, and teachers who are interested in conducting advanced level research to enhance their professional practice. The 54-credit-hour program will be offered online with a summer residency on campus. This program will link theory to practice, emphasizing such areas as cultural diversity, equity, school law, finance, school safety, community relations, 21st Century workplace skills, and educational globalization.

Beginning this summer, the Department of Teacher Education will offer the Early Childhood Education - Licensure program. It will provide the final 60 credit hours of a bachelor’s degree for those who hold an AA, AS, AGS, or AAS in Early Childhood Education from an approved Colorado community college or four-year institution. The program is designed to meet the needs of professional personnel working in Head Start programs; half of those teachers are federally required to hold a baccalaureate degree. Students working in early childhood education expressed desire for teacher licensure, to qualify them to teach in a public school setting, noted Dr. Ed Crowther, chair of the Teacher Education Department.

Adams State is among the first institutions to offer such a program. It will be offered in a hybrid format, with classes off campus and online, and include a threeweek summer residence component.

masters of arts in humanities - public administration Also beginning this summer is the M.A. - Humanities degree with an emphasis in Public Administration, a 36-credit-hour, online program offered through the Department of History, Anthropology, Philosophy, Political Science, and Spanish (HAPPSS). It will help professionals acquire credentials to serve as county and city administrators, including the job of city manager, and provide credentials to those already performing such duties. The program will put theory into practice by aligning coursework with the candidates’ practica experiences.

master of arts - applied sport psychology The M.A. in Applied Sport Psychology is a 36-credit-hour, online program offered by the Department of Human Performance and Physical Education (HPPE).

Set to begin this fall, it will be the only such online program in Colorado, designed to prepare students for careers as applied sport psychology consultants.

“Applied sport psychology puts the emphasis on mental training. It’s the same as strength building, only it builds mental aspect and teaches coaches and athletes how to perform better,” said Dr. Brian Zuleger, asst. professor of HPPE and a certified consultant for the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. “This is the only program like this in the country. Very few people are trained effectively in this field.

The program will be unique in that it will allow students to fulfill all the requirements for AASP certification.”

Extended Studies offers online 6 associate's degree programs, 18 bachelor's degree programs, and 8 master's degree programs. There are a total of more than 400 distance learning undergraduate and graduate course options, in addition to numerous professional development opportunities.

the summer session 2016 schedule was revamped to allow new high school graduates to enroll in General Education courses during June and July.

These courses are part of Colorado’s gtPathways program, which guarantees they will transfer into all bachelor’s degree programs at Colorado’s public colleges and universities. Summer financial aid and discounted housing rates are available for eligible students. For the summer, non-resident students qualify for in-state tuition. In addition, new students who enroll during Summer Session and continue to the fall semester will qualify for a lower Guaranteed Tuition rate. the new lone star scholarship will automatically award $3,000 to all qualified new and continuing students from Texas, beginning with the fall 2016 semester. In addition, qualified Texas students will also automatically receive Adams State’s Experience Colorado Scholarship of $5,000. Texas is the only state in ASU’s region that doesn’t belong to the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE), in which members reciprocally offer tuition at 150 percent of in-state rates. ASU has a reciprocal tuition agreement with New Mexico.

He performed Michael Udow’s seminal work, Four Movements for Percussion Quartet with the Animas Percussion Quartet. He also presented a snare drum clinic at the convention titled, “Free-Rebounding: The Relaxed, Full Stroke,” which addressed tension in snare drum technique, as well as performance anxiety. He also performed and taught as an artist-in-residence at Northern Arizona University, Oct. 21-23, and at the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific, Oct. 28-30.

dr. melissa l. freeman, project director for the Title V PPOHA grant, was co-editor with Magdalena Martinez of New Directions for Higher Education Special Issue: College Completion for Latino/a Students: Institutional and System Approaches. Also assisting with the volume were lia a. carpio ‘14, director of ASU’s Higher Education Administration and Leadership (HEAL) program, and rita jaime, a student and graduate assistant in the HEAL program. Through original research, literature reviews, and case studies, it highlights best practices and successful initiatives and outcomes for Latino/a students. Topics include Latino/a undergraduate student success, graduate student success, community colleges, four-year institutions, financial aid, and undocumented students. Freeman authored Chapter 1, a case study of ASU’s HEAL program, which focuses on “Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders at the Nation’s Hispanic-Serving Institutions.”

stem faculty put active learning strategies into practice asu professors went to school themselves this semester to learn techniques for creating more student engagement in their classes.

This faculty development program in college STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) teaching and learning was supported by a Title V STEM grant for Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI). The program was conducted by Escala Educational Services, based in Española, New Mex., which specializes in HSIs. STEM grant Project Director Marcella Garcia explained the grant focuses on three components designed to help more Hispanic and low-income students earn a STEM degree: outreach, academic support, and student engagement.

“Faculty in this program are moving from traditional lecture to an active, minds-on/hands-on approach. They are using data to make instructional decisions,” Garcia explained. “There is a difference between learning and engagement. It has to do with the level of relationship. The way students feel in class and on campus is a big deal. Because there are so few Hispanic teachers, especially at four-year institutions, there can be disconnects between the students and teachers.”

The faculty group began their training with a two-day workshop in August at which they considered, among other issues, their responsibilities as faculty at an HSI. Throughout the semester, they videotaped and critiqued their teaching methods and put into practice various techniques for active learning. The group translated their findings into a series of workshops for their colleagues, offered in February and March.

On December 14, nine STEM faculty presented results of their classroom teaching research projects on new active learning strategies and received certifi-

cates for completing the program. He found they retained more after each repetition, and test scores showed improvement over last year.

“These learner-centered strategies show promise,” said Dr. Benson, who introduced daily quizzes and had students sketch geologic processes in his introduction to geology course. He found non-geology majors showed the most improvement in process and spatial cognition.

In videotapes of his class, Dr. Kleinschmit observed students in his cellular biology course appeared more engaged when working in small groups on case studies, as opposed to traditional lecture sessions. Students also enjoyed the case studies and “felt more engaged.”

In her general chemistry labs, Dr. Renee Beeton found it beneficial to write learning objectives on the white board, incorporate mini-lectures, and administer a one-question exit quiz.

Now in its fifth and final year, the $3.6 million Title V grant has funded purchase of STEM equipment and construction of a new observatory and greenhouse on campus, as well as a STEM Center where students can receive tutoring and supplemental instruction, conduct research, and relax with fellow students and faculty. Outreach activities to K-12 students include observatory and planetarium activities, STEM Saturdays, and the Summer STEM Academy.

Adams State University will offer the High School Apprenticeship Research Program in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics this summer, funded by a grant from the Army Research Office.

The grant of $3,716 will allow two high school students to participate with faculty and university students in the Undergraduate Research Internship Program in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Social Robotics, also recently funded by the U.S. Army. Both programs are directed by Dr. Matthew Iklé, professor of mathematics.

Open to high school juniors and seniors, the seven-week apprenticeship program will be held during June and July, 2016. Apprentices will earn $10 per hour for 20 hours per week, as well as one credit hour from ASU. “We are seeking students who have demonstrated interest and taken coursework in computer programming, software development, scientific reasoning,

robotics, or some combination of these,” said Iklé, who will mentor the apprentices. Mathematics/Computer Science faculty Dr. Comfort Cover and George Sellman will also participate in the research and guide students.

The research project will have two tracks: artificial intelligence and robotics, with one apprentice assigned to each track. Researchers will use the OpenCogPrime (OCP) artificial intelligence system, as well as NAO and Robokind humanoid robots in Adams State’s AI Robotics Lab. By working on this ambitious research project, apprentices will gain hands-on experience to strengthen their skills, learning abilities, and scientific reasoning. Iklé noted the apprenticeship program will also create a pipeline from high school to completion of a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) bachelor’s degree.

governor reappoints trustees val vigil ‘71 & leroy salazar Colorado Governor John W. Hickenlooper recently reappointed Valentin Vigil ‘71 and LeRoy Salazar to the Board of Trustees for Adams State University.

“We are very pleased that LeRoy and Val will continue as trustees for Adams State University,” said Adams State President Beverlee J. McClure.

“They both have demonstrated their commitment to education at all levels, particularly Adams State.

This is an important time for us, with new initiatives underway, and continuity of leadership is Trustee Val Vigil ‘71 very valuable.”

Having served as a trustee since 2010, Salazar was reappointed to a one-year term, expiring December 31, 2016. (Read more on page 13.) Vigil was originally appointed to the board in December, 2011, and was reappointed to a three-year term, expiring December 31, 2019.

Now in his seventh year as a city councilman for Thornton, Colo., Vigil has operated Vigil & Company, Financial Consultant, since 1971. Vigil served in the Colorado State Legislature from 1999-2006, including two years as the Assistant Minority Leader.

An advocate for education, Vigil volunteers many hours at the local schools as guest speaker. He is in much demand to speak on immigration issues and is considered an expert in this topic, as he was the first legislator in Colorado to introduce the in-state tuition legislation in 2000.

nearly 100 people attended a reception for state legislators hosted by adams state university at the warwick denver hotel, february 18.

In addition to legislators, Adams State alumni, faculty, and staff participated to share their "great stories" of Adams State.

The following morning, February 19, several Adams State academic departments and student groups showcased their offerings and activities with displays in the capitol. Among the groups were the AS&F student government and the Veterans at Adams State Club. Later that day, President McClure received a standing ovation when she was introduced to the Colorado General Assembly.

Internships give

Music students the

business

“If you are going to be a musician, you’re going to be in business,” said don richmond, an accomplished musician who has performed for many years in the san luis valley and northern new mexico.

“It dawned on me early in my playing career that, gee, I need to be a business person. A degree in business would have been nice. I worked very hard to fill in that blank for myself.”

Now, music majors can fill that knowledge gap with an emphasis in music business, initiated in the Music Department five years ago. Assistant Professor of Music James Doyle oversees the emphasis and teaches “Topics in the Music Business.” The emphasis also requires 18 credits of business courses.

“We teach students to develop multiple revenue streams,” Doyle explained.

“I ask them to think about how they can monetize things they are already doing. I have not worked outside the music business since my sophomore year of college. Musicians wear a lot of hats.”

His class hears from a range experts via Skype, including both musicians and non-performers, such as an accountant with tax advice for musicians and the director of a music conservatory. As a service learning project, the entire class helped to package CDs by Richmond’s band, the Rifters, for distribution to radio stations.

“The topics course rounds it all up,” said junior Kayleen Peretto-Ortega. “I love how you have to take a course in all business disciplines, like accounting.

It’s hard, but you do it for your own business and it saves you money.”

The class also gained experience producing off-campus events, in which the stakes are higher. They assisted with a show at Alamosa’s newest performance venue, Society Hall. “Everybody learned a lot about the process of event production. There are countless details, down to making sure the restrooms are stocked with toilet paper,” Doyle said.

Richmond’s wife, Dr. Teri McCartney ’87, ‘92, ASU emeritus professor of counselor education, enlisted assistance from Doyle’s students for the April concert she is coordinating to benefit the San Luis Valley Cancer Relief Fund. Students are handling ticket sales and marketing and working with musician contracts.

“These projects add the element of community service and working with nonprofit organizations,” Doyle said.

A music performance major from Trinidad, Colo., she plays flute and sings, but has set a goal of becoming a mastering engineer. “Women are underrepresented in that field, and we have better high-frequency hearing.”

“Having interns is really exciting to me,” Richmond said. “Nobody knows what the music business is morphing into. It’s changing so fast, and it’s being driven by people their age. We need their perspectives as a record label.”

One of Richmond’s current interns, David Webb, said, “Your calling lies at the intersection of your strength and music needs. I’m figuring out where I can excel.” A senior from Colorado Springs majoring in vocal performance, piano, and guitar, he first stepped inside a recording studio two years ago. Now he’s in the midst of producing his second CD, as is his fellow intern Skyler Choice, a senior

vocalist and guitarist from Denver. “I think everyone in music should take the topics class,” Choice said. Both are planning careers as singer/songwriters.

After graduation in May, Webb will head to New York City. He also gives vocal lessons and ultimately hopes to operate his own vocal studio. Drawing on what he learned in music business, Choice is organizing a national tour to perform his own work.

“It’s awesome to have this connection to a local record label,” Doyle said. “I try to drive home that the music industry is no longer just on the coasts. You don’t have to go to Nashville to record.

Howlin’ Dog Records shows musicians can be anywhere. Our students can have a face-to-face relationship with producers and a record label, right here in Alamosa. This partnership gives our students the opportunity to learn all aspects of working with a record label: recording and production, merchandising, promotion, and touring. They see every side of the business.”

McCartney said learning flows both ways. “There is so much to learn in the music business. Streaming has changed everything, and these students can help us to learn the ins and out of that world,” she said. “I would love to turn that over to interns to research and develop,” Richmond added. He hopes their internship will continue to grow and “become its own driving force.”

Doyle noted, “Because Teri was a faculty member, it is easy to trust the students are getting an experience that meets Adams State’s mission.” For her part, McCartney said, "I enjoy the collaboration, because I'm basically a teacher at heart. Working with our interns lets me continue to be involved with students.”

Senior Cody Fricke interned with the Santa Fe Opera and with ALMA, the Alamosa Live Music Association, as a live sound engineer. Peretto-Ortega interned at KRZA Community Radio in Alamosa and is now its office manager/ membership director/PSA director. She is also directing a summer internship program at the station for college students interested in mass communications or radio broadcasting. An internship with Richmond’s Howlin’ Dog Records gave her experience in another realm of music and resulted in a paid position with the company, cultivating relationships with DJs for radio promotion.

Richmond has produced recordings at his Howlin’ Dog Studios in Alamosa for many years. A year ago, he launched

The decades have left their marks on Richardson Hall’s staircase murals created by Tom Proctor ‘53, Marilyn Hauser, Lawnee Haywood ‘63, and Herman Robinson ‘62. Randy Pijoan, assisted by ASU graduate student Madeleine "Maddie" Ahlborn, worked on the paintings this past winter. (Photo below right) A nationally recognized artist and Adams State adjunct painting professor, Pijoan said the two south murals were in "epic" disrepair. First, they prepped the surface, including cleaning, scraping, and repairing damaged holes in the plaster.

Pijoan believes one of the murals in the northwest staircase may have been exposed to fire, due to the amount of smoke and soot on the surface. "I turned many clean, white rags black wiping off the mural. By the time I finished, the bucket and my hands smelled of ashes."

Ahlborn agrees, "I have used a lot of muscle with a toothbrush cleaning and prepping the murals."

After cleaning and patching, Pijoan used a polyacrylic product to reseal the images. "In a hundred years, if an improved technique is available for restoration, everything we have done can be examined by our notes on file in the Luther Bean Museum, so any of our products can be removed or repaired properly." The varnish will also hold off possible water damage in the future.

After cleaning, Pijoan began applying paint to areas where chipping removed the original coat. Previously patched areas were also very obvious. He first matched the value of the paint using a grayscale, white to black, a technique he learned when he studied painting in Italy. "Once the value is matched, we go back in with color."

Another challenge was to mimic the quality and type of paint and technique used by the murals’ original artists. "I feel I enter a Zen-like state getting into the head and heart space of the artist. I pay homage to these artists by restoring their art."

He was first appointed to the Adams State College Board of Trustees in 2003, when the State Colleges in Colorado was disbanded and independent boards created for each institution. After a break, he was reappointed in 2010; he will finish a final term this coming December. Salazar uses his connections to help strengthen the university and ensure its long-term viability and stability.

2015 Dear Adams State Alumni & Friends: adams state university isn’t just a great, affordable way to reach my higher education goals, it’s been a part of my family for generations.

Chuck ‘68, John ‘18, and Jeff ‘86 Owsley are part of an Adams State family legacy begun by Chuck’s father, Hartley. In addition, John’s sister Laura is a senior theatre major. Jeff’s sister Kathy Soden ‘89 is also an alumna, and her son Bowen will graduate from ASU this spring.

i am a fourth-generation student at Adams State. Not only did my father and grandfather graduate from Adams, but so did my great-grandfather, Hartley Owsley. Since 1936, the Owsley family has supported this institution through devoted involvement with the Alumni Association, presidential search committees, the Grizzly Club, and much more.

I am very proud to say that because of my family’s involvement, my dedication in high school, and my upbringing here in the Valley, I am able to go to Adams State University for my first year for virtually no cost. ship and the Alumni Foundation Scholarship has blessed me more than I imagined. They allow me to focus on my studies, instead of stressing about how I will pay for my education. I admit filling out the applications was a little stressful, but it was truly worth it.

Last February, during my senior year of high school, I spent almost every night in the Adams State library working on scholarship applications. At first Adams State was only my back-up plan, but after I saw my hard work pay off and began to receive scholarships, I knew that it was the right choice for me.

Another deciding factor in choosing Adams was my ability to easily transfer my 28 concurrent credits from high school.

This has allowed me to focus on my double major in accounting and finance; I plan to complete my associate’s degree by the end of the summer. That means I’ll graduate a year early with the class of 2018 and get a head start on my goals. These include joining the Peace Corps and teaching economic development, getting my CPA certification, and one day starting my own small business in the Valley. All of these goals are more doable when faced with little to no student debt.

I am especially appreciative of these scholarships because I never expected I would be one of those people with enough scholarships to pay for my education. I was never the smartest kid in my class, and my family’s financial need according to FASFA was never too high. I just cannot thank the ASU Foundation enough for recognizing my dedication to improve academically and reach my potential as a student.

special events $15,000 women's week Each spring, Women’s Week offers events such as films, speakers, presentations, and panels that address women’s and gender issues.

$6,000 theatre program holiday show The Theatre Program’s annual holiday show appeals to families of the San Luis Valley. Several matinee performances are attended exclusively by public school children. For many, it might be the only affordable, quality, theatrical performance they will see. The show traditionally has a very large cast, but large casts mean large costume budgets, and productions for children mean large spectacle costs. Thus, continuation of this holiday tradition requires sponsorship.

The “Raging Studios” project is an official research project that examines songs, lyrics, and poetry written with the intention of channeling voluntary/involuntary minority rage, which may be based on inequity of people with different backgrounds, socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. It has cultivated high-quality work in the field of inclusive excellence involving faculty, staff, students, and alumni who would otherwise not have had a chance to record in a professional studio. Funding will continue this project.

$3,000 annual one-day middle & high school english teachers’ conference Beginning in April 2016, this one-day spring conference invites middle and high school English teachers to present on best practices in pedagogy, bring students to present their best papers, and allows current ASU teacher-candidates to network with current practitioners. It will also promote recruitment into the forthcoming MA in Humanities / English emphasis and undergraduate programs.

russ cagle ‘73 joins legacy society Warm memories of his student days at Adams State inspired Russell Cagle ’73 to add the institution to his legacy. “I know the phrase to ‘pay it forward’ is frequently used; it is an appropriate phrase to use now. Financially backing ASU will further its growth and enable others to also be a part of the magic that ASU offers,” he said. “Adams State always provided a nurturing and home-type feeling that gave me the opportunity to blossom and grow and mature.”

In 1992, Cagle earned an M.Ed. from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, Calif., then taught junior high science, later becoming a software publisher in the medical field. He continues this work with such clients as Medicare, Anthem, and various medical clinics.

In his “free time” he is active in the non-profits Coastside Land Trust and Peninsula Open Space. Cagle and his wife, Carol, live in San Mateo, Calif., where they enjoy hiking and travel, as well as attending Alumni Relations events hosted in San Francisco.

“I also enjoy drawing and painting and do want to see each state in the good old United States.” He and Carol have two children and two grandchildren.

larry & janice reed Unrestricted Endowment Every Monday brings a large cache of mail to the Adams State University Foundation that accumulates over the weekend. Many envelopes contain donations, but the January 25 mail delivery brought an extremely generous surprise.

“I almost fell out of my chair, I was so excited,” said Tammy Lopez ’91, ’00, executive director of the Foundation. A substantial, unsolicited gift from an anonymous donor was made in memory of Janice Reed ’64, who passed away December 1, and created the Larry & Janice Reed Unrestricted Endowment. “It was a nice start to the new year,” Lopez added.

Duane Bussey ’82, chair of the ASU Foundation, explained unrestricted gifts are especially important to the Foundation. “We always want to recognize donors publically and express our appreciation. But some people are humble, don’t want to toot their own horn.

The Foundation always respects wishes to remain anonymous.”

A San Luis Valley native and longtime resident of Center, Janice earned a degree in business education and operated a farm with her husband. She enjoyed sewing, baking, bowling and traveling and belonged to the P.E.O. Chapter HQ.

donor report 2015 devon j doyle memorial scholarship Leslie '95, '05 and Brian Doyle created the Devon J Doyle Memorial Scholarship in honor of their son, who died May 16, 2015, shortly after his 21st birthday in Manama, Bahrain. A third class petty officer, he served as a damage controlman in the U.S. Navy, deployed on the U.S.S. Farragut.

“We wanted to create a scholarship in Devon’s name because we know the importance of education. Devon also knew the value of education,” said his mother, a sixth grade English teacher at Ortega Middle School in Alamosa. During his junior and senior years at Alamosa High School, Devon was a concurrent student at Adams State and

planned to complete a degree in wildlife biology after his military service.

“Devon was the kind of person who would do anything for anybody. He was kind, compassionate, caring, and would give the shirt off his back if somebody needed it. We think he would be proud of this scholarship, knowing that he was helping someone achieve their future goals. We wanted his name to be remembered,” Leslie added.

The Devon J Doyle Memorial Scholarship is available to fulltime Adams State students with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75. Preference will be given to applicants majoring in wildlife biology, Alamosa High School graduates, and those who have served in the military.

Brian Doyle is the sales manager at Alamosa Building Supply.

Devon’s oldest sister, Ashley Gonzalez ’12 completed Adams State’s nursing program. Sister Kalin Doyle is an ASU freshman majoring in biology; and sister Ali Jo Doyle is a high school junior who may follow the family tradition at Adams State.

land donation benefits foundation “Depending which story you listen to, sometime between 1912 and 1915, my wife’s grandfather either traded a restaurant for this property or won it in a card game,” said Stephen Glenn of the 40 acres he and his wife, Cheryl, recently donated to the ASU Foundation. Located in the San Luis Valley on Hwy. 17, the property was sold, with proceeds directed to the Foundation’s unrestricted fund.

The Santa Rosa, California, couple no longer has family in the area and have been to Alamosa only three times. Trying to determine the best use of the 40 acres, a year ago they visited campus and were impressed by the students they met. They also bought ASU gear for a good friend who had spent a semester at Adams State. “It’s a small world.”

The Glenns were looking for a non-profit organization in the valley that could make use of the property. “We are very pleased the Adams State Foundation accepted this gift,” Stephen said.

foundation matches grant for student documentary production The ASU Foundation matched a $5,000 grant from the Colorado Office of Film, TV and Media to fund a project by students in “Documentary Film Production,” taught by Paul Echeverria, asst. professor of mass communications. The resulting film, due to be completed by the fall, will air on Rocky Mountain PBS. Connections made through ASU Community Partnerships led to receipt of the grant, which will cover production and travel costs.

The 15 students in Echeverria’s class first identified two subjects, the San Luis Valley and technology, and then each created a treatment relating to one of those narratives. Their final topic is “The Silent Crisis,” which will explore food insecurity in the San Luis Valley. Production will take place during April and May. “They are working from an idea into telling a story in an actual film that will go in-depth with the subject,” Echeverria explained. “This project is exciting, as is the potential for more collaboration with the film office in Denver.”

John McBride `59 (Benson, AZ) is enjoying retirement and living the life of leisure with wife Marilyn. His Adams State education has been good to them. They celebrated their 61st anniversary last June.

Isaac Garcia `62 (Rio Rancho, NM) and wife Sally Longoria Garcia were honored by friends and relatives at a 50th wedding anniversary celebration, hosted by their children and grandchildren at the family retreat in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico.

Gary Holbrook ‘62 (Golden, CO) is the subject of a video on YouTube recently produced by Metro State University of Denver’s Alumni History Committee. He was professor of argumentation at Metro for 31 years, retiring in 1999. The video focuses on Gary’s role in establishing the National Debate Tournament, which brings winners of the Irish Times Debate to debate at colleges and universities across the U.S. The Irish team appeared in 133 debates at 46 schools, including Adams State, in the event’s first 17 years. The tournament was sponsored by Coors’ for its first three years. Gary then helped found and served as president of Friends of the Irish Debate Series at Metro, which continues to sponsor the series. Gary notes he and his wife, Judy, were married by the Hon. Carlos Lucero ’61. Gary wrote: “I am indebted to my professors at Adams State, particularly Budge Threlked and Norma Petersen.”

That turned out to be tutoring at the local elementary school as a volunteer. I never anticipated being given the district Community Partnership Award for 2014-2015. Wow! Then recently I was invited to participate in a new randomized trial from the Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School called COSMOS. It is a study of cocoa extract and multivitamins to determine their role in improving health. It will last for 4 years and be conducted by mail, with some volunteers receiving placebos. I find this a way to still be useful as a senior citizen--volunteering. Why do they ask me? Because I have had and survived cancer four times now. My late husband wasn't so lucky. He was the fourth in his family to die from cancer. Someday I hope a way to stop this epidemic will be found.”

taught business. He coached wrestling, boys and girls soccer, was a counselor, and ended up being assistant principal in charge of discipline (fun job). Now his time is spent with fun activities, hunting, fishing, golf, and anything else that doesn’t involve work. He has 2 successful kids. Travel and cruises are part of the retirement—someone has to do it! Believe it or not, he still goes to the gym to workout, which keeps him out of the doctor’s office. He highly recommends ASU for anyone who needs a quality education.

Ellwood Ervin `67 (Aurora, CO) went to the 38th Denver Film Festival and continued his legacy. He saw 49 films and programs, which tied his all-time best in 1980 and 2013. He has seen a total of 1,299 for all 38 film festivals.

Gary Benson `68, `74 (Alamosa, CO) retired from teaching at Centauri HS in La Jara, Colo., in 2010 after 35 years. He became a full-time artist with wife Sheryl, doing shows mainly in Taos, New Mex. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve 2016.

Meeting the new president and head football coach Rosenbach at our first gathering in Alamosa along with my teammates and their spouses made the reunion all the more special. Gary Venturi `71, `71 (Summit, NJ) taught physical education for 37 years in the Newark Public School system. His wife, Sadie, works at a golf club, and his son, Jason, is in real-estate management in Florida.

Michael Williamson `70 (Northville, MN) is retired. He was formerly chief academic officer of HOSTS Learning. He was also the deputy superintendent of the Michigan Department of Education and the superintendent of Wyandotte City School District.

Dorothy August `73 (Tucson, AZ) and husband Mark are both retired but continue a career as lifelong learners. They attend presentations offered by the VA and various churches. Mark is taking classes in using the computer, and Dorothy is involved in a Bible study. She also continues to volunteer with the adaptive P.E. teachers at the last school at which she taught.

Michael Martinez `75, `87 has lived in Minturn, Colo., for 40 years. He retired after teaching 35 years for the Eagle County School District. Donna Hayward `77 (Calhan, CO), after 32 years teaching and counseling, retired in 2004 to own and operate Gentle Spirits Ranch in Calhan. A graduate of La Veta High School, she maintains contact with friends there. She is involved with Living Word Community Church. She’s married to Ken Hayward.

great stories With a clear recollection of her own struggles as a migrant student trying to learn English and adapt to American culture, Esmeralda (Gonzalez) Martinez ’97, ’01 works to mitigate those challenges for current migrant students. As director of the San Luis Valley BOCES Migrant Education Program, a position she’s held for three years, she says she is in an ideal position to do the most good for others.

“I am only successful if I can make a difference for others,” she said. “I can create better opportunities and improve the systems to support migrant families.”

Her family moved from Mexico to the San Luis Valley when she was in fifth grade. To make ends meet, she and her seven siblings joined their parents in the fields as soon as the school year ended each spring.

“We weeded the long fields of spinach, bending all day under the sun, all summer. My back still reminds me of the pain,” she said. She remembers times during potato harvest when her parents wouldn’t finish work until 1 a.m. “My mother always told us, ‘I want you to be someone, to get an education.’ All those experiences were blessings. I learned to work hard and get an education.”

Erna Acheson Waterman `82 (Littleton, CO) is an engineer and scientist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She has two daughters, ages 20 and 16.

Lisa Drew `83, `07 (Cañon City, CO) is the Western Region Rural Director for Banner Health. She provides clinical performance

language learners in the Alamosa School District for 16 years. In 2001, she completed Adams State’s M.A. in education with an endorsement in culturally and linguistically diverse education; she also holds endorsements for reading and principal licensure. In addition to working full-time, the mother of four also serves on the Sierra Grande High School Foundation board and was recently elected to the district’s school board.

The Migrant Education Program covers 23 southern Colorado school districts through the SLV and San Juan BOCES (Boards of Cooperative Educational Services).

“Migrant education is a bridge to connect families with the school districts and make them aware of other community resources,” she said. The program serves children up to age 22 who must change school districts as a result of their parents’ seasonal or temporary work in agriculture or fishing. Students receive supplemental educational services, tutoring, and leadership activities.

The program operates year long, with the student population reaching up to 640 in the spring, when farms begin planting. Martinez noted that previously, most migrant families were of Mexican background, but the demographics are changing to include more from Central America. “We used to primarily serve Spanish speakers, but now we also have students who speak Quanobal, Diné, and other languages. All of our migrant families believe in and support education. That is common across the board.”

Chris Lopez `84 (Alamosa, CO), a longtime journalist and Alamosa native, now heads the Boys and Girls Club of the San Luis Valley.

Lopez said a desire to come home and return the favors he received growing up made the job an attractive one. “I benefited from really good mentors,” he said. “I believe very strongly in mentoring young people and helping them get on a good path toward success in their own life and careers.” Lopez returns to Alamosa after a three-year stint overseeing marketing and communications at the University of Texas at El Paso. He spent nearly four decades in the newspaper business as a reporter, editor and executive. Lopez reported for The Pueblo Chieftain for nine years, where he worked alongside his brother Larry in the newsroom. He looks forward to the challenges posed by a new field.

Bonita Tooley `85 (Edgewood, NM) and husband, Dean, keep the calendar full with volunteer jobs and a lot of travel in their 22-ft. motorhome. This year they went to Branson; Paducah, KY; Atlantic Island (home of Anne of Green Gables); the West Coast Highway; and Alaska.

Suzanne Pasztor `86 (Eureka, CA) writes, “I’ve been a professor of Latin American history at California State University – Humboldt since 2005. I’ve published 2 books and several volumes of the Handbook of Latin American Studies. Most recently, I’m enjoying both teaching and serving as a University Ombudsperson, and I’m working on creating a study-abroad program in Cuba. Adams State was instrumental in my choice of career, and I’ll be forever grateful for the mentorship of Drs. Dwight Crowder, Shirley Fredricks and Jodine Ryan – fabulous teachers all. My husband, Tim, and I enjoy life on the beautiful northern California coast with our fur-child, Olaf.

Dr. Tom Dodd `95 (Fort Collins, CO) graduated with a Ph.D. in educational leadership from the Pennsylvania State University in August 2015, a few weeks after presenting an Assessment and Reporting at the International Baccalaureate (IB) Conference of the Americas in Chicago. He is in his 11th year as principal of Lesher Middle School, an IB World School in Fort Collins, and is also serving a 3-year term as the Region 2a Director with the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals (CASSP) Board, representing the school districts in the counties of Boulder, Clear Creek, Gilpin, Jefferson, and Larimer.

MaryLuise Schroeder `95 (Woodland Park, CO) obtained her Master’s in Social Work from Colorado State University. She retired in 2012 after working in social service and foster/ adoption agencies. She and husband Larry enjoy camping in Colorado, Nevada, and Ore-

Tamiya Stone '11 was named the Colorado Music Educators Association’s 2016 Outstanding Young Music Educator. "I was stunned when I received this award," Stone said. Since earning her degree in music education, she has taught music and beginning sixth-grade band at Palmer Lake Elementary School in Palmer Lake, Colo.

She was nominated by fellow music educators Butch and Cynthia Eversole. "These are people who know what it takes to teach music, and for them to think I am worthy of this means a great deal to me."

Dr. Tracy Doyle, professor of music said, "Proud does not begin to describe the feeling. It was an honor to have worked with such a special young woman. " "My favorite part of teaching is when students take control of their learning. I love experiencing the lightbulb moment and the excitement that follows." She knows she has accomplished her goal when a student in the hallway hums a melody they worked on in class.

"Adams State is a small school that allows students and professors to work together and individualize learning. I never felt like I was left behind or unable to ask questions." She remembers learning to re-imagine music for every individual, an approach she uses with her students.

Many of her former professors inspired Stone, including Doyle, Dr. Matthew Schildt, professor of music, and Dr. Beth Robison, Music Department chair. "The professors work together to create world-ready educators and musicians," Stone said. Doyle got her excited about teaching elementary music. "She always told me that she became a college professor to inspire new teachers." Robison showed her the impact of music on any age, and Schildt inspired her to look more in-depth at a piece of music.

She also appreciated James Doyle, assistant professor of music, and his style. "Mr. Doyle always made amazing percussive sounds when teaching a piece, and I often find myself using this method with my beginning band percussionists."

Stone plans to attend graduate school for a master's in choral conducting. "My goal is to keep improving, so I can be the most impactful teacher I can be for students."

Matthew Relyea ’04, ’06 and Sarah VanIwaarden Relyea ‘07 (Monte Vista, CO) gave birth to their first child, Phoebe Sunshine Relyea, in November. Matthew is a science teacher at Alamosa High School, after nine years at Sargent High School. He sponsors students in Knowledge Bowl and Science Fair.

Liz Thomas Hensley `05 (Alamosa, CO) completed her Ph.D. in organization and management with a specialization in management education from Capella University. Her dissertation was titled “Adjunct Online Faculty Job Satisfaction: A Phenomenological Study.”

Liz was also recently elected to the Alamosa City Council for Ward 1.

Reuben Lee `05 (Artesia, CA), has been a sales and marketing manager for a real estate advisory company for the last 9 years. Previously, he was a high school football coach. He helped many players earn college scholarships, with a few making it into the NFL and CFL. He returned to ASU for his 10-year reunion at Homecoming.

Jesse Long `12 (Albuquerque, NM) is a personal math/physics tutor and a professional MMA fighter.

Jeri Haley `06 (Dayton, OH) writes, “I'm working and attending school to obtain a second bachelor's degree in accounting! I love being back in school, but miss Adams State, and all the fun times I used to have! I was back to visit over the summer, and it was great to see the new additions, especially the new football stadium, as I was on the Student Government when those plans were initially passed!”

Donna Wehe `12 (Alamosa, CO) is the new director for Public Relations, Marketing and Development at SLV Health. Wehe most recently held the position of patient access manager and hub coordinator for Connect for Health Colorado. She brings her experience with economic development, including her former positions as the director for the Small Business Development Center-SLV and Leading Edge Instructor, to the marketing role at SLV Health.

Scott `07 and Michelle Chavez `08 Moore (Delta, CO) welcomed their second child, Elizabeth Moore, on December 1. Scott also completed his master’s in educational leadership in December.

Brian Pitts `07 (Rio Rancho, NM) was recently inducted into the Rio Rancho High School 2015 Sports Hall of Fame group from the graduating classes of 1999-2004. Brian was Rio Rancho’s first individual male state champion (wrestling 2000). He went on to become a two-time state champ before he graduated.

While attending Adams State, he was a twotime All-American.

Leticia Ingram `11 is Colorado's Teacher of the Year. She will be Colorado’s nominee for National Teacher of the Year, and serves as a teaching ambassador to communities and organizations around the state and nation. Ingram teaches English language development, history, and math at Basalt High School and received a master’s degree in English as a second language from Adams State. She received a $1000 scholarship to ASU for a student of her choice, and a tuition waiver for a three-credit hour professional development course.

Tiffany Leggett `13 (Bandera, TX) is living a young snowbird’s life, without the white hair. She is horsemen’s bookkeeper at Canterbury Park in Minneapolis, Minn, during the summer and an assistant horsemen’s bookkeeper at Keeneland Association during April and October. She spends the winter in Phoenix as an accountant at Zimmer Equine Sports Medicine. She enjoys snowboarding, wakeboarding, and trying to golf.

Tessie Pikula `15 (Westminster, CA) is a physical therapy aide with plans to return to school to become a licensed physical therapy assistant.

Austin Rochford `15 is the new Navajo Prep baseball coach. He served as a graduate assistant for the Grizzlies in 2015. He said, “I really like coaching at Adams, but I wanted to come back and get a little closer to home.”

Rochford said his main focus when the season begins will be teaching the Eagles the fundamentals of the game.

Donald Whiting `15 recently earned a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, focusing on history and human development.

He writes, “I began in the prison program in 2009 and since being released in 2013 finished my classes in 2015. I now plan to pursue my master’s in history at the University of Arizona. I am only 62 years old and plan to study until I die! Don't ever give up.”

The February 24 Grizzly Club luncheon featured a special presentation: a check for $5,060 from an anonymous donor who directed the gift to support athlete travel expenses.

"This donor supports Adams State Athletics and understands the need for financial assistance with the high cost of travel," said Executive Director of Alumni and Donor Relations Lori Laske ‘91, ‘01.

Athletic Director Larry Mortensen ‘88, ‘93 also expressed gratitude. "Travel is a big issue with the expansion of the conference, and these funds are greatly appreciated and sorely needed."

grizzlies remain in rmac An Adams State University task force charged with examining an offer to join the Lone Star Conference (LSC) determined that remaining within the RMAC is the best viable option for Adams State student-athletes, coaches, and administrators. Adams State has been a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) since 1956.

As a member of the RMAC, Adams State has won 58 national championships, highlighted most recently by a 2015 NCAA Division II women's cross country title.

The task force deliberated over the course of several months, recommending Grizzly Athletics focus on four key areas: improving financial support from alumni, addressing increased travel costs and budgetary needs, maintaining a

strong administrative presence in the RMAC and NCAA, and establishing reciprocal tuition in Arizona and Texas.

"I appreciate the efforts by the Task Force and support their decision. We are also honored that the Lone Star would consider us for membership.

Adams State has a long and rich tradition in the RMAC and will continue to be a proud member. I personally value those relationships I've established as a coach and administrator for twenty years," said ASU Athletic Director Larry Mortensen ‘88, ‘93. "We will continue to monitor the ever-changing landscape and do what's best for the success of our student-athletes. I hope the recommendations made by the Task Force will be given serious consideration by all parties. We need their support more than ever."

grizzly greats dr. joe vigil ’53, ’59 and his former runners kathy ’88 and robert ’87 hipwood, presented their training philosophies at the 2016 American Distance Summit, held at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in January. Vigil is recognized as the “godfather” of American distance running and was recently awarded USA Track & Field's Legend Coach Award. The Hipwoods were named National High School Coaches of the Year for their 20 years of success at Los Alamos High School, New Mex., where they have directed more than 20 state cross country titles, including the 2015 NM HS Girls Cross Country title.

roger brunelli ’67, ’74 (La Veta, CO) retired after a 29-year career with the La Veta School District, where he was teacher, principal, superintendent, and coach. Because of his years of service and his efforts to build the high school gym, the facility was bestowed the moniker “Roger Brunelli Gymnasium.”

February 7 has also been proclaimed Roger Brunelli Day in Huerfano County.

scott haebe ’83 was recently honored with the Jeffco Hero Award, which recognizes Jeffco Public Schools students and teachers of extraordinary character, leadership, and strength. He teaches history and coaches basketball at Evergreen H.S. in Jefferson County, Colo. A video (available on You Tube) detailing Scott’s contributions was produced by JPS-TV and the Jeffco Schools Foundation, which are partnering to present this series. damon martin ’87 head coach/director of ASU Cross Country and Track & Field, was named the NCAA Division II South Central Region Cross-Country Men’s Coach of the Year by the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This is the fourth consecutive season Martin has earned this distinct honor. He has received a total of 22 regional coach of the year awards.

sara smith mann ’94 (Floresville, TX) was inducted into the Center, Colorado, High School Hall of Fame, February 16. She competed at Center H.S. from 1987 to 1990 as a 4-sport athlete. She earned her Master of Science in Guidance and Counseling at Texas A & M Kingsville, and is now working on her doctorate degree. She is the director of curriculum and instruction in the Floresville School District. She and her husband matt `94 have 2 beautiful daughters, Kaytlyn and Emily.

grizzlies winter season Women’s Basketball Under second-year head coach Larry Joe Hunt, the Grizzlies went 3-22 during the 2015-16 campaign. Highlights included a season sweep over rival Western State Colorado University to extend ASU’s winning streak over WSCU to four games. Juniors Lena Jaycox and Cydney McHenry led the Grizzlies in scoring with 13.1 and 11.1 points per game, respectively. They were both named All-RMAC Honorable Mention after the conclusion of the regular season. Jaycox recorded a season-high 28 points against WSCU, while McHenry posted a season-best 25 points over Northern New Mexico College.

Men’s Basketball The Grizzlies reached the RMAC Tournament once again under first-year head coach Russ Caton ‘97. Unfortunately, the season ended in the quarterfinals of tournament play against second-seeded Colorado School of Mines. Senior Shakir Smith led the team in several statistical categories during the season, highlighted by 20.8 points per game.

With his play, the prolific scorer was named AllRMAC First Team at the conclusion of the regular season. Fellow senior Kendyl Grover was named All-RMAC Honorable Mention and led the team with five double-doubles on the season. Despite losing four seniors, the Grizzlies return seven players with varsity experience.

Shakir Smith finished his senior year having scored an average of 20.8 points-per-game.

Men’s & Women’s Swimming With fifth-year head coach Dan France at the helm, the Grizzly men’s swim team finished fifth and the women’s team, seventh at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Championships. Both teams finished second in the Citrus Classic. Highlighted by a performance by junior Marissa Mantzey, this was the women’s team’s best finish.

However, Adams State took first as a program after the combined men’s and women’s score toMarissa Mantzey taled 902.

Mantzey was also named the RMAC Swimmer of the Week.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field The Grizzlies wrapped up their indoor campaign with a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II Championships, March 12 in Pittsburg, Kansas, with 47 points. Adams State was led by freshman sensation Sydney Gidabuday, who claimed titles in the 3000 meter run and 5000 meter run.

Along with All-American honors, Gidabuday was also declared the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Track Athlete of the Year. Oliver Aitchison ran to his second consecutive national title in the mile, as a total of eight Grizzlies earned All-American distinction. The duo of Jurgen Themen and Samuel Bilderbeck set school records earlier in the season in the 60 meter dash (6.65) and heptathlon (5,250 points), respectively.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field The Adams State women set two school records at the NCAA Division II Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas, March 12-13. New records were set in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) with a time of 11:28.53 and the 1600 meter relay with a time of 3:46.86. Highlighted by the aforementioned efforts, five Grizzlies were named All-Americans for the indoor track and field season. With 15 points, ASU tied for 16th at the Championships.

A standout this season was Serena Canegan, who claimed a title in the pentathlon at the Grizzly Buffalo Clash, Feb. 14. She shined in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 1.68 meters (5'6").

lauren martin ’14 was recently named Trinidad State Junior College’s new cross country coach. For the first time, TSJC will have athletes on its San Luis Valley Campus, as well as the Trinidad campus. The groups will train separately but compete as a single team.

TSJC Athletic Director Mike Salbato said, "She has a great deal of experience as a top caliber athlete and with running the massive summer camps at Adams State, so we are excited to see her bring that knowledge over to TSJC." Lauren is a two-time individual national champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races and an 8-time All American.

runners in the men’s 10K at the Pan American Cross Country Cup, held March 5 in Caraballeda, Venezuela.

He claimed a spot on the U.S. roster for the Cup by placing 3rd February 6 at the USATF National Cross Country Championships in Bend, Oregon. Known for running Colorado’s fastest mile two years ago, Stevens has a professional contract with Asics. He still trains in Alamosa, prepping for the Olympic trials in July.

Despite an 8th place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships from Martin Ramirez in the 133 weight class, the Grizzlies struggled as a team with a 1-10 dual record. With his championship performance, Ramirez concluded his outstanding season with a 30-9 overall record and All-American honors. This season he claimed titles at the RMAC Championships and Midwest Classic, experienced a 19-match win streak, and was a two-time recipient of both the RMAC Wrestler of the Week and www.d2wrestle.com Super Region 4.
