As someone who grew up here, I can speak from experience that the Toledo area is a wonderful place for children, filled with valuable support and resources for people of all ages. Link Up Program Encourages Music Instruction for Youth

The Toledo Symphony will participate in Carnegie Hall’s “Link Up: The Orchestra Moves” program, offering local students a hands-on music education experience. As part of the curriculum, students will attend a concert on Feb. 26 at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle, where they will sing or play instruments, along with the orchestra, from their seats. Link Up provides a free, year-long curriculum with resources to support music instruction in schools. The Toledo Symphony joins more than 100 orchestras worldwide in this initiative, which will reach over 300,000 students and teachers during the upcoming season.

Toledo Ballet Holds Preschool Enrichment Classes Throughout the school year, Toledo Ballet offers six 6-week sessions of its Preschool Enrichment class. During these comprehensive sessions, students are guided through dance instruction, story time, craft activities and mini demonstrations. Session two begins on Jan. 16 and concludes Feb. 20. Session three begins March 6 and ends April 10. Classes are on Fridays, 11am-noon.

Spring Drama Classes Return with Sylvania Youth Theatre

Sylvania Arts Offers Winter Filmmaking Workshop for Students

Sylvania Youth Theatre is offering spring drama classes for students ages 9–18, with sessions running Feb. 9 through March 18 at Epworth United Methodist Church. Participants can choose between Acting 101, teaching fundamental acting skills and stage confidence, or Advanced Acting, focusing on audition techniques, monologues and cold reads for experienced performers. Classes are taught by Irina Zaurov over five-weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays. Registration is $120. Scholarships available for qualifying students.

Sylvania Arts is accepting youth participants in grades 5–8 for its Shorties U filmmaking workshop this February, held on four consecutive Saturdays from 9am to noon at Epworth Church.

Students will learn video production skills, including idea development, scriptwriting, shooting and editing, while working in small teams to create a short film. The workshop will conclude with a student film screening, Q&A with local media professionals, with films later featured in the Tree City Film Festival. Register online through January 11, 2026. $110 per participant, Scholarships are available. Limited to 25 students.

NEW Kids on the block Sylvania Board of Education Appoints New Superintendent

Sylvania Schools has hired Tim Zieroff as the next Superintendent. Zieroff has been in the district for 15 years, the last 9 in the role of assistant superintendent. In August 2026, Zieroff will take over the position once Superintendent Veronica Motley retires.

ProMedica to Move Obstetrics From Flower Hospital to Toledo Hospital

ProMedica has transitioned obstetrics services from ProMedica Flower Hospital to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, located about eight miles away, as part of a plan to strengthen its inpatient OB program. The shift was completed by the end of 2025, with additional details to come as the transition continues. The consolidation is intended to help attract more providers and to better position the system to meet future needs.

While Flower Hospital will no longer offer inpatient OB care, outpatient services will remain.

Ohio Expands Mobile Crisis Services for Youth in All 88 Counties

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has announced a major statewide expansion of the state’s youth behavioral health crisis system. For the first time, Mobile Response and Stabilization Services (MRSS) are now available in all 88 Ohio counties, delivering fast, in-person help for children and young adults, ages 20 and under, who are experiencing mental, emotional or behavioral distress. I was given the opportunity to participate in the 2026 class of Leadership Toledo. Being able to intimately care for, and get to know, my hometown means everything to me. I love Toledo, and one of my constant goals is to support and improve my community.

What part of your daily work brings you the most fulfillment? Every day, I get up and think about the individuals I’ve worked directly with in the past and how their quality of life was tethered to my ability to care for them. In my current position, I indirectly affect an individual’s quality of life by overseeing the training, resources and job satisfaction of their caregivers. The trickle-down effect is inspiring to me; it proves that caring about others is indeed contagious.

What advice would you give someone hoping to follow a similar career path? Allow yourself to fail upwards. Mistakes teach the most impactful lessons on how to support yourself. Consider every failure an opportunity to start over with experience.

What career accomplishment are you most proud of? I’ve been fortunate to celebrate many accomplishments throughout my career. While visible achievements on stage are rewarding, the most meaningful ones are usually the least obvious: the unexpected notes and letters I receive from current and former students. The profound substance and deep insight contained in those messages often reveal an impact I was unaware of while working with the student. They remind me that we can have our greatest influence on others during moments that feel ordinary and serves as a reminder not to take “regular” moments for granted.

How have your students shaped your approach to leadership? I believe leadership is about being an enthusiastic guide. I try to empower my students by giving them the tools to pursue answers when their interest is highest. The learning process is always mutual; my students teach me new ways of thinking that complement my own experience and make the learning process more personal - which, for me, creates a deeper opportunity for more meaningful learning and greater retention through our shared experience.

What part of your daily work brings you the most fulfillment? The moments where I can see something we have worked on begin to make sense. I see it in a student’s eyes or a facial expression. These “aha” moments happen at different times and can be very subtle - but it’s like looking up at the sky at the right moment and catching a shooting star streak by… it’s always fun to see and you can’t wait to catch a glimpse of the next one.

What motivates you to continue growing in your role? To quote the character Dani Rojas, but with a twist - “Music is Life” - and there is still so much left to learn and experience…

What advice would you give someone hoping to follow a similar career path? Be kind, be flexible, be open to new ideas and other perspectives and listen to everything - not just the music you love or ideas you already agree with. Music can be a fulfilling career path and there are so many directions a career in music can take you, some that may not even be on your radar yet.

Practice now to be prepared later. There aren’t many careers where instead of going to work, you get to say, “I have to go play.” Now go and practice!

What career accomplishment are you most proud of? We learned a lot the hard way this year and we have grown immensely because of it. Our goal in 2026 in consistency and continuity. Our GMs are great leaders and truly care about their staff and our clients!

How have your students shaped your approach to leadership?

Our students 100% shape our approach to leadership by constantly reminding us why we do what we do. I think that leaders get into trouble when they forget “the why” of their organization. And we have hundreds of reminders each week as to why we do what we do!

What part of your daily work brings you the most fulfillment? People are learning our curriculum and progressing. There are so many cool stories of kids and adults overcoming and surprising themselves with what they are capable of. I’m addicted to the growth of others!

What advice would you give someone hoping to follow a similar career path? Buckle up, it’s a wild, but very rewarding, ride!

What career accomplishment are you most proud of? 2025 was full of new opportunities, both personally and professionally; my husband and I bought our first home together in Toledo, I won the Joyce Perrin Teacher of the Year award, and I am teaching a new math workshop elective I designed. The thing I am most proud of would be working under Megan Ahrene for “Night of the Living Dead” as my first theatrical endeavor at TSA. Theater has always been a passion of mine and I learned so much from the experience. I am very grateful to work at a place where I am encouraged to explore my passions creatively.

What part of your daily work brings you the most fulfillment? My favorite part of each day is being able to connect with current and past students in between classes and at events. Nothing can put a smile on my face faster than a student running up to me to share good news!

I am proud of my career and my experiences at Hope that have made me the leader I am today. I began teaching at Hope in 2014.

Throughout my time here, I have been a general education teacher, an intervention specialist, the Assistant School Leader, Director of Special Education and, now, Principal. Over the years, every student and family at Hope has helped me learn and grow as an educator and a school leader. I am very proud to be a part of the Hope family.

Our intervention team collaborates with classroom teachers to ensure that students are getting the individualized support they need to be successful. This includes sensory breaks or calm-down strategies. Our Social Skills Program gives students the tools they need to regulate their emotions and to build healthy, positive relationships with their peers. At HOPE our mission is to help students reach their highest potential.

How have your students shaped your approach to leadership? The students at Hope have helped shape my approach to leadership in many ways over the years. Understanding the individual needs of each student is a large part of being a successful leader. At Hope we strive to meet all of the needs of our students, both academically, mentally and physically. Our small class sizes and academic programs, including a dyslexia support program, social skills classes and sensory integration, allow us to give each student a personalized learning experience.

What part of your daily work brings you the most fulfillment? The most fulfilling part of my school day is seeing the community Hope has built within our building. Hope is the true definition of community. The small class sizes allow everyone to get to know each other, which has helped create a true family and community.

All students have individual learning needs and the Hope community supports them all. Many of the staff at Hope have been here for 5 years or longer. This commitment has helped build community throughout the staff, students and families. Open communication and understanding is a key piece to building a sense of community.

What career accomplishment are you most proud of? At Maumee Valley, curriculum design is an ongoing, reflective process that allows us to respond to student growth and interests. This year, I am most proud of teaching a newly developed course that completes a two-year advanced Spanish sequence. Drawing on my own journey as a bilingual educator originally from Argentina, I designed this course to bridge the gap between linguistic skill and authentic cultural immersion. After engaging students last year in “Advanced Topics in Spanish” with issues of migration, equity, power and representation, this year, “Spanish: Challenges of the 21st Century” deepens their learning by examining global challenges facing Spanish-speaking communities through cultural, social, and justiceoriented lenses. Through this work,

I intentionally challenge students to think critically and reflect on the lived experiences of others, fostering empathy and global awareness alongside advanced language proficiency.

How have your students shaped your approach to leadership?

Over my 14 years at Maumee Valley, I have had the privilege of watching generations of students grow, and they have profoundly shaped my approach to leadership.They have taught me that effective leadership begins with listening. Their setbacks, curiosity, diverse perspectives and willingness to engage with complex and sometimes uncomfortable topics have pushed me to lead with humility, flexibility and intentionality. I see leadership as a collaborative process; one that values student voice, adapts to evolving needs, and prioritizes creating spaces where inquiry, empathy and growth are central.

What part of your daily work brings you the most fulfillment? The most fulfilling part of my daily work is the relationships we are able to build with our students at Maumee Valley.

Those relationships create the trust and support that allow students to take intellectual risks, ask questions, and persevere through challenges. I love to see students experience a breakthrough when a concept clicks or they arrive at an understanding on their own, because those moments reflect both their growth as learners and the strength of the learning community we have built together.

A new year comes with a clean slate and 365 days to achieve new goals. Maybe you’ve tried the same resolutions year after year. Exercise, eat better and lose weight. Sound familiar?

It’s time for a new approach. This year, try incorporating a few family goals along with the usual list of self-improvements.

“Family goals are an important part of what keeps a family together,” says Lindsay Stormer, LSW, OCPS, ECMH, director of prevention and lifespan supports at Harbor of Toledo. “When we can engage in shared traditions and moments of pleasure, we are more likely to trust our family in times of stress. Working towards a goal, like keeping the house clean, can also remind everyone in your family that we all take care of each other and that each person in your family has an important job, no matter how small.”

We spoke with local experts to come up with some unique goals for 2026. If you are looking for ways to improve family life in the new year, here are a few ideas to consider.

GET ORGANIZED If you’ve got kids, you’ve got clutter.

School papers, art supplies, toys and books. How do you keep on top of it all? We asked professional Jen Hill of Jen Hill Organizing for tips.

“For me, it is at night at bedtime. I know I will have 10 minutes and I commit to reading at that time. I try to get through at least a chapter, but I consider the task accomplished even if I only get one page read.”

“My kids are teenagers now and we still enjoy reading together. I appreciate the quiet time with them, as well as the discussions we get to have about the books we are reading.”

Try new genres

“I read a lot of young adult and middle grade titles each year and I have never regretted it. Just because the protagonist is decades younger than me doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the story, the writing or the message, or that I won’t fall in love with the characters.”

FIND TIMES TO CONNECT AS A FAMILY Our calendars fill up so quickly. School, work, sports, activities. How can we find time to sit down and connect with our family members? Lindsay Stormer, LSW, OCPS, ECMH at Harbor of Toledo offered some ideas.

“Reflect on the moments from your own childhood which inspired joy and connectedness. These moments, which may be something as simple as sharing the responsibility of making a meal together over music and conversation, can make all the difference in the life of your child.”

Families can help their children learn good dental habits with a routine of proper brushing and flossing. One way is for children to watch their parents! When they see a good example of keeping their teeth clean, they will be more likely to try themselves. As soon as baby teeth start to erupt, it’s time to start brushing them, and as soon as a baby tooth touches the one next to it, it’s time to start flossing.

Even if regular floss is difficult to use, floss picks and water flossing are great alternatives!

One of these is our Perfect Storm Workshop, a workshop created specifically for parents of children who have received diagnoses such as ASD, ADHD, or Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). This workshop is centered on helping families identify the root causes behind their child’s challenges and symptoms, while offering clarity, hope, and actionable next steps grounded in nervous system health.

We’re also launching our Birth and Beyond Workshop, hopefully in the first quarter, to support families from pregnancy through early childhood, along with several webinars throughout the year to broaden access beyond our office walls.

All of these workshops will be completely free and open to anyone in the community. Our goal is to shift the conversation from managing symptoms to optimizing health by empowering families with education around the nervous system, lifestyle habits, and proactive care. Our team is incredibly excited about what’s ahead, and we’re honored to walk alongside families as they build healthier futures together!

Get to know Krystal Szabo Tell us about yourself! Your family (names, ages, pets) My husband is a farmer. We both come from farm families. We’re fourth generation farmers. Our kids are 7 and 5.

We have three kitties and a Labradoodle named Archer. We love farm life, rural life and camping.

I graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Pittsburgh. I had worked in the food industry since I was thirteen.

Krystal Szabo’s Green Bubble Gorgeous in Perrysburg hosts make and take events for all ages.

Krystal Szabo, owner of Green Bubble Gorgeous in Perrysburg, was a chef working in Pennsylvania when she decided to try something different in the kitchen.

“I got tired of making Christmas cookies one year, and decided I’d make bath bombs and soaps and lip balms for everybody,” Szabo said.

She started making cupcake bath bombs. The body care regional buyer at Whole Foods saw them on her desk one day and asked “Can you get these for

all 46 stores in this region in six weeks before Christmas?”

Back to Ohio That was sixteen years ago. Two years later, she moved back home to Northwest Ohio and began selling her line of aromatherapy products on etsy and at craft shows. As the business grew, she knew that she needed a commercial space where she could sell her aromatherapy line, host events and manufacture products.

“We opened The Creative Hub in Grand Rapids. It was the perfect little store. We turned the back of the store into a commercial kitchen, and we were there for eight years,” she said.

During that time, she appeared on Deals and Steals on The View, and also on Good Morning America.

“We did The View during COVID. It was crazy. I was pregnant at home making bath bombs in my kitchen. All of my employees were at home making bath bombs in their kitchens.”

In December of 2023, Szabo moved the business to Perrysburg and began selling under the new name, Green Bubble Gorgeous. The store now offers private parties, walk-ins, and themed events, along with summer camps.

Any hobbies? Cooking. I love watercolor. I sell a wide range of watercolor workbooks and paintable cards in the store that are very popular.

I love to read, and I love baking and gardening.

You can be counted on to bring _____________ to the potluck! The brisket. My husband is a fabulous smoker.

It’s the best barbecue you will ever have in your life. I’m really good at making the sides, the macaroni and the cole slaw.

Favorite local restaurant?

Benchmark in Perrysburg. I love Zingo’s also.

Favorite hidden or not so hidden gem in the metro Toledo area?

I love Gathering Volumes. Also 7 Little Cupcakes. I love the Gilded Exchange because I’m all about reducing and reusing. It’s a nice little high end resale furniture and decor shop in Perrysburg.

TPS Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

rooklyn Tucker, a senior at Scott High School, discovered the TPS Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program through word of mouth. Last year, while participating in the welding program, she learned of the CDL course and asked her welding instructor about the CDL option. What she learned immediately caught her attention: the CDL requirements can be completed in just one semester and are offered at no cost to students.

“It’s free,” Brooklyn explains. “A lot Brooklyn Tucker, TPS Senior and of people pay $5,000 to $7,000 for this recent recipient of NexGen Trucking training, but here it’s included with student of the month our high school education.” She plans to complete both her CDL and welding certification, hoping that one day she can combine the two skills in the future by working on or welding trucks.

Brooklyn’s interest in trucking started early. She recalls having a cousin who drove a truck and once offered to take her on the road. Over time, her curiosity grew as she watched trucking-related television shows and YouTube videos that highlighted “a day in the life of a truck driver.” After graduation, Brooklyn plans to enter the workforce immediately. While she knows that interstate driving is limited until age 21, she says local companies have already assured her there will be opportunities available. “Mr. Cole has been extremely helpful in putting me in contact with companies that will hire me,” she explains.

For students considering the program, Brooklyn encourages them to give it a try. “It’s a great thing to have a CDL. It’s a great backup plan,” she says. She also describes instructor Mr. Cole as hands-on and supportive. While additional education may be an option someday, Brooklyn says she is focused on working first. “College is always an option,” she adds.

ianni Austin began the CDL course in the fall of 2025 and has already earned his commercial driver’s license (CDL), which requires 40 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of behind-the-wheel training. Through TPS, students receive both components in one comprehensive program—unlike most programs that require students to attend separate institutions for driving practice. Gianni became Gianni Austin, graduating in Spring 2026, has a interested after learning CDL, which resulted in a job waiting for him about the program through his school counselor and was immediately drawn to the idea of traveling, seeing the country and earning a good living.

Set to graduate in spring 2026, Gianni already holds his CDL and plans to begin working immediately. He credits Mr. Cole for his encouragement and jobplacement support. “Mr. Cole is a good trainer and makes sure you understand everything,” Gianni says, noting the assistance he gained in working through the challenges of maneuvering a tractor-trailer.

TPS is one of the few programs in the country offering a comprehensive CDL pathway, with two tractors and trailers available for student training. Interest in the program continues to grow each year as more students see its value and opportunity.
