CITY POLITICS
Violent tendencies Punch ups in City Politics By Johnny Hildo
Surely you know about the historic shootout at the OK Corral. But do you remember the punch up at the Golden Corral? Almost 20 years ago, a brawl erupted at the Toledo buffet chain. What started as a joyous birthday celebration amid smorgasbord gluttony took a dark turn, ending with a fist-flying dust-up. The result was a jail sentence for one perpetrator and lasting physical and mental health trauma for the victims. Just a one off, right? Surely a birthday shindig at a local eatery ending in an all out melee was a once in a lifetime event.
Rat trap
Welp, we guess that depends on how long you’ve been alive. Fast forward to a week or so ago. Picture a festive children’s birthday party at a local Chuck E Cheese. Pizza! Games! Music! A creepy costumed rat mascot! What’s not to love? And what could go wrong? Apparently everything. An argument in the bathroom leads to fisticuffs in the children’s play area. The brawl spills into the parking lot. A car crashes into a parked truck.
outside local bar O’Shea’s. This came hot on the heels of multiple violent incidents at the establishment, including a hit and run. The joint is now threatened with a one-year forced closure if it doesn’t get its stuff together. Then there was the recent car jacking that dragged an elderly man for blocks, ending with the perp crashing the car, wandering into traffic on the expressway, and getting smooshed. None of these incidents were shootings, homicides, or other crimes Wade sez are trending copacetic. But they point to a troubling rise in weird unbridled violence. Give peace a chance
gives? “The culture at large What Prices continue to rise. Folks struggle to make ends meet. Home ownership is out of financial reach glorifies violence for many. Young adults face dwindling job prospects. The culture at as a solution to large glorifies violence as a soluto frustration, amplified by the frustration, amplified tion endless search for clicks on social media. Does any of this, or all of it, help by the endless search explain the unpredictable violence that seems to explode regularly in for clicks on social our swampy environs? Wade touted investment in affordable housing and youth promedia.” grams as contributing to the crime Another dark turn. An arrest for felonious assault. A victim in an induced coma. What the flying flippity flip? These are interesting times, to be sure. Rewind to last year, when Wade crowed about declining crime rates here in ol’ Froggy Bottom. Homicides down twenny one per cent. Shootings down nearly thirty. What about folks getting the crap beaten out of them in a kids’ restaurant, though? More recently a viral video circulated on social media showing a fight
reduction that he described last year. But he cautioned there is no single, or fast or simple solution. We need more. City Director of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement Malcolm Cunningham said at the time what is needed is opportunity, healing and connection. Here, here. But how does that translate into meaningful policy initiatives and budgetary priorities? The pot is starting to boil. We need to lower the temperature. What say you, Wade?

Celebrating inclusion, resilience and access while highlighting diverse voices, local resources and advancing equity in the Toledo community.
Lott Industries Celebrates 70 Years
Empowering people, supporting business and strengthening the community. By Melissa Lee Lott Industries is marking a major milestone: 70 years of service dedicated to enhancing lives, transforming businesses and enriching communities. Founded in 1955, the Toledo-based nonprofit has spent seven decades evolving to meet the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and others facing barriers to employment—while remaining deeply rooted in its original mission. As Lott Industries celebrates its anniversary, the organization reflects on a legacy built on opportunity, adaptability and collaboration, looking ahead to a future shaped by innovation and growth.
A legacy of purpose
For CEO Tim Menke, who has been with Lott Industries since 2013, the anniversary is both meaningful and humbling.
Lott Industries CEO, Tim Menke “I’ve only been a small part of Lott’s long history,” Menke said. “But I feel incredibly blessed to be here. The industry itself—and the work that’s done for people with disabilities—is wonderful. It’s an exciting time, but it can also be scary. We don’t always know what the future holds for people with disabilities and how they’ll spend their days. That’s why organizations like Lott are so necessary.” Since its inception, Lott Industries has remained focused on supporting adults through vocational opportunities and meaningful employment.
Mission in action
Celebrating 70 years of service & impact!
Lott Industries is proud to be recognized as a Top Workplace 2026! Join us in making a difference—where passion meets purpose. 3350 Hill Ave. Toledo, OH 43607 (419) 381-5200 lottserves.org
Lott Industries’ mission—“Enhancing Lives, Transforming Business and Enriching Communities”—is more than a slogan. Through hands-on support and real-world skill-building, Menke explains, “We’re helping people with disabilities learn new skills every single day,” he said. “It’s not just about work. We’re teaching life skills—how to navigate daily life, how to build independence.”
By providing quality, dependable service, we allow them to continue their work—while creating opportunities for the people we serve. Lott’s impact extends beyond employment. Through partnerships with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Lott has helped individuals move toward homeownership. The organization also addresses food insecurity by hosting two monthly food pantries in partnership with Food for Thought, serving both participants and the broader community. In 2025, Lott’s urban farm produced and donated 2,500 pounds of fresh produce to local families—just one example of how the organization connects its mission to community needs.
Supporting business, strengthening community
In addition to its nonprofit services, Lott Industries operates as a manufacturer, providing services such as contract packaging, secure shredding and auto parts manufacturing. These business partnerships not only support the local economy but also create meaningful jobs. “We help businesses accomplish whatever product or service they offer,” Menke said. “By providing quality, dependable service, we also create opportunities for the people we serve.” Lott has also expanded its reach over the last decade to support individuals facing additional barriers to employment, including those who are formerly incarcerated, experiencing homelessness or living in poverty. “This work is part of who we are,” Menke said. “It’s what Lott was founded on.”

The power of partnership
Community involvement is woven into Lott Industries’ mission. Menke emphasizes that collaboration is essential to the organization’s success. “As a nonprofit, we can’t survive on our own,” he said. “Joining forces is always better than doing it alone.” Lott regularly partners with local nonprofits, churches, and organizations—including Mobile Meals, Paws and Whiskers, Lucas County agencies and local utilities. These collaborations strengthen Lott’s programs and the community as a whole.
Leadership with vision
As CEO, Menke sees his role as guiding Lott Industries toward sustainability while fostering strong partnerships locally and statewide. He is active in organizations such as Toledo Rotary and the Toledo Chamber of Commerce, and serves on the board of the Ohio Provider Resource Organization, working alongside legislators and fellow providers to shape the future of services for people with disabilities.

REAL PEOPLE. REAL RECOVERY. I began my journey at the Thomas M. Wernert Center while seeking support for depression. Through recovery, growth, and perseverance, I went from being a member to becoming a peer supporter helping others navigate their mental health path. As Lott Industries looks toward the future, innovation remains a priority. New initiatives—including a planned brewery and taproom, expanded culinary collaborations and continued workforce development programs—aim to create even more opportunities for those Lott serves. “The fear is complacency,” Menke said. “If we just keep doing what we’ve always done, there’s no growth. We’re always pushing ourselves to find new and transforming ways to support people with disabilities.”
Board of Developmental Disabilities’ March 18 Resource Fair
Menke hopes that when people hear the name Lott Industries, they think beyond outdated perceptions. “We’re more than a small hand-assembly operation,” he said. “We’re involved in more than 40 industries and our impact is global. We want people to know how active and innovative we are.”
A message of gratitude
As the organization celebrates 70 years, Menke’s message is simple: thank you. “It takes a community to make this work,” he said. “From our staff and partners to the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the businesses that say ‘yes’ to working with us—where we are today is because of everyone who came before us and those who continue to support us.” Lott Industries will mark the milestone with an open house in August, inviting the community to explore its facility and learn more about its work. After 70 years, Lott Industries remains focused on the same goal it began with—creating opportunity, dignity and belonging—while boldly stepping into the future.
The Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities will hold its annual Inclusion Resource Fair on Wednesday, March 18, at First Tee Golf, 4700 Hill Avenue. The free community event will run from 5-7 pm. The Inclusion Resource Fair connects individuals of all abilities, their families and caregivers with local resources, services and programs focused on support and access with information from a range of organizations that serve people with developmental and physical disabilities. Providing a welcoming, accessible environment where people can learn about support available in Lucas County, exhibitors at the fair include educational programs, summer camps, community organizations, transportation options and funding services. Pre-register online to receive reminders and updates about the event but registration is not required. Free. For more information, visit lucasdd.org.

Burger time
Two recently opened, locally owned burger joints sizzle with flavor and fun By Jason Webber Two burger joints, both alike in dignity, in fair Toledo, where we set our scene. On Secor Road, sandwiched in between Buff City Soap and a Barry Bagels, there’s Burger Hub, one of the few halal burger joints in Toledo; In fact, it may be the only one. A few miles away, located across from the WalMart at Central Ave. and Holland-Sylvania sits Beef N Bunns. Both places offer great burgers in fun, lively atmospheres, and both are operated by dedicated, driven entrepreneurs who bring some sizzle to the Glass City.
Beef N Bunns 5858 Central Ave. (419) 725-0186 beefnbunns.com
Haseed Jaffary was unsatisfied with his career and tired of working for other people — as a general manager for a shipping company after a stint with Amazon. “I got tired of listening to my bosses at work,” said Jaffary. “I got tired of all the corporate politics at work. I was never told ‘Thank you’ for anything. Not once.” Around the same time, Jaffary’s friend Osama Yousaf pitched him the idea of getting into the restaurant business. “And I thought ‘You know what? That sounds perfect.” The result was Beef N Bunns, which opened in 2024, serving delicious burgers, unlike anything else in town.
but our menu is really different.” Beef N Bunns also has a full line of chicken sandwiches, ranging from Nashville Hot to the Stinger, which comes slathered with honey garlic sauce. “Our chicken is all sliced fresh every day. It’s not pre-cut. Everything is fresh,” boasts Jaffary.
Milkshake heaven
And the milkshakes; oh goodness the milkshakes. Beef N Bunns uses an old fashioned milkshake maker that’s located under a neon sign that reads “My Milkshake Brings All the Boys to the Yard,” a nod to the classic 2003 Kelis song. Each milkshake takes several minutes to make but that’s because each one is made with real ice cream and other ingredients such as Twix bars. Served cold and super thick, Beef N Bunns creates milkshake heaven. The interior of the restaurant features a large colorful mural painted by local muralist and artist “Chilly” Rodriguez, who brings his signature color and graffiti-style to Beef N Bunns, which opened in December of 2024. “We’re trying to do something different with this place,” said Jaffary. “You won’t find our menu anyplace else in the city.”
Burger Hub Burger Hub - 3444 Secor Road. | (419) 873-6060 On Facebook and Instagram at burgerhub419.
Owner Haseed Jaffary quit his 9-5 to open Beef N Bunns.
Beast of a burger
Take the Rockstar burger, a monstersized beast featuring a cooked-to-order beef patty topped with mayo, sweet chili sauce, Korean barbecue sauce, jalapenos, grilled pineapple, pepper jack cheese, and slaw. It’s the kind of thing Guy Fieri would order. It makes a mess... but it’s absolutely delicious, a top-tobottom explosion of sweet and savory flavors that work well together. “We have a really unique menu. Most places just have a few kinds of burger,
Burger Hub founder and owner Adam Saie had an inauspicious debut in the restaurant business. At age 10, he was at his father’s restaurant, Yesterday’s Diner, and his dad told him, “You need to get your ass to work. Go fry up some chicken strips and French fries.” The young man dutifully fried the grub...and promptly spilled it all over the floor. “My dad was pretty unimpressed with that,” said Saie, his voice laced with humor as he recalled the event. That was then, and this is now, and Saie has graduated to grilling some of the best damned smashburgers in the city. Growing up in the restaurant business (his family also ran Quarters’s in Bowling Green), Saie brings his family’s hard-nosed work ethic and commitment to Burger Hub, which opened in December 2025.
Restaurant Week Toledo Fresh ingredients and a toasted bun compliment this oversized burger perfectly.
Halal compliant
Everything in Burger Hub is halal appropriate, meaning it’s prepared according to the dietary and religious regulations of Islam, which aligns with Saie’s faith. “Toledo has a big Muslim community, and I wanted to give them a fun option to visit and eat locally,” explains Saie. “Most of the time to get halal food, you have to go up to Detroit.”
Toledo proud
Saie is a big fan of Toledo and knew when he was kicking around ideas for his restaurant he eschewed the idea of moving to a larger community. “Being born and raised in Toledo, this is my home, and I love it,” said Saie. “I could’ve gone anywhere, but I wanted to stay home with my family and friends and give back to the community that has given me so much.”
An industrial-sized burger
Then there are the burgers, which are grilled with love and attention. Take the 419 Burger, featuring your choice of a single or double smashed patty, topped with mozzarella sticks, onion rings, and special Hub Sauce. The result is a flavorful industrial-sized burger that will fill you up until breakfast. Another excellent burger is The Hangover, the perfect antidote after a night of carousing...or anytime, for that matter. Built with a single or double patty, the burger comes topped with hash browns, a fried egg, cheese, and bacon—a real, delicious mouthful. Burger Hub’s colorful interior features several Toledo-centric murals, also, like Beef N Bunns, designed and painted by “Chilly” Rodriguez, who is one of Toledo’s hottest muralist right now. Burger Hub is a fun place to eat, particularly if you enjoy a side of Toledo Pride with your meal. “Toledo has franchises and chains, but I’m homegrown,” said Saie. “This is my way of giving something fun and unique back to the city of Toledo.”
Restaurant Week Toledo is a weeklong spotlight on the Glass City’s dining scene offering special menus with time- limited dishes. A portion of proceeds from participating restaurants benefits Leadership Toledo, helping fund youth leadership and community-building programs. Eating local can have a meaningful impact—one meal at a time. March 2- 8. restaurantweektoledo.com

Toledo Voices Showcases Original Plays by Local Playwrights at Toledo Rep Seven new and original ten-minute plays By Matthew Krasula
Sitting on a beach reading a 800 + page long biography, Lin Manuel Miranda thought “This is my next show.” That little idea exploded into the international mega hit musical, Hamilton. The concept, to others, wasn’t clear how it would work- a hip hop musical about a lesser known founding father initially was a hard sell. However Manuel kept writing, composing, cutting and rewriting. The process of creating new works has creatives endlessly invest in their piece and then it’s time for a test drive, to see the successes, failures and what can be improved. Pieces are tested in friends’ living rooms, basements, comedy clubs and theatrical workshops, which is what the Toledo Rep is currently working on.
Toledo Voices heard
Toledo Voices is a celebration of original theatrical works by local Toledo artists. This annual event produced by the Toledo Rep brings art in its rawest form in front of an audience to provide a truly original experience. This is the chance Toledo audiences will have when they attend Toledo Voices. The event, a series of seven ten minute plays that are original unpublished works by local writers within an hour drive of Toledo, is a rehearsal process, built to reveal the intention and power of the writing, meaning the author of the play cannot direct or act in the piece, but they are encouraged to rewrite their scripts. The directors for the plays were hand selected by The Toledo Rep and the

actors, who turned out in record numbers, were drafted for each production by the directing staff. Rehearsals are underway, a process collaboration between the actors, the writer and the director. Each play will be performed twice to enhance exposure and so that audiences can digest the pieces. Joe Capucini serves on the Toledo Rep committee which chose teh works to be performed and is helping to produce the event. He spoke about the works selected for this year, “There is just as much talent in Toledo, Ohio as there is in New York. The plays are really good this year and the chance to see the starting point of a great piece of work is so rare.” For writers this is a deeply personal experience. Their work is brought to life through this workshop and will be a starting point for revision. Capucini said one of the playwrights was joyously overwhelmed at hearing their words performed and is excited for audiences to see their work. Attendance at the event has steadily grown each year, which is important because the audience not only experiences these new works, but they also have the chance to provide feedback on the plays. Don’t miss out on the chance to see the next Hamilton, before it’s Hamilton. Toledo Voices runs March 19-21 at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre. Toledo Author Deb Weilnau Has Stories That Heal
From community collaboration to children’s literature, a writer’s mission to make stories matter By Melissa Lee Deb Weilnau is a Toledo-area author, speaker and educator whose work demonstrates how resilience can be transformed into meaningful action. Through memoir, children’s literature and community collaboration, Weilnau uses storytelling to foster empathy and to promote mental health awareness, creating healing opportunities for children and families. Rather than focusing on hardship, her work highlights what can be built after adversity—and how shared stories can help others feel less alone.

The COVID-19 pandemic marked a pivotal moment in Weilnau’s creative journey. During a time of widespread uncertainty and loss, a personal tragedy reshaped her understanding of grief and responsibility, inspiring deeper reflection and purpose-driven writing. This experience informed her contribution to Scars to Stars — a series of online gatherings, live events and books where writers vulnerably share authentic stories of overcoming adversity — where she explored the lasting impact of loss, the importance of kindness and the value of human connection during moments of crisis. Weilnau’s voice is grounded in personal experience and growth, allowing her to speak with honesty and empathy. Her SPEAK event presentation, “SelfCentered to Survive,” expands on this perspective, encouraging individuals to view self-care as a necessary foundation for resilience. Through her speaker platform, The Chain Reaction (thechainreaction.me), Weilnau continues to engage audiences in conversations that lead to understanding, healing and action. Weilnau is also deeply committed to children’s literature, writing books designed to nurture empathy, inclusivity and emotional awareness for children
facing physical, emotional or situational challenges.
Community partnerships and charitable work
Weilnau actively collaborates with organizations that align with her mission of compassion and inclusion, including: n Planned Pethood Partnering on the upcoming launch of “Marnie’s Message” n Helping Feline Friends Hosting a special book reading at Adventures, Ink in Milan, MI, featuring cats and kittens with disabilities in need of loving, permanent homes n Triangular Processing
Participating in the Festival of Trees in Wauseon These collaborations reflect Weilnau’s belief that storytelling can extend beyond books and into realworld impact.
Connect, collaborate and learn more
Weilnau welcomes opportunities to collaborate with local groups and institutions with book readings, signings and educational events that are at the heart of her work. What sets her apart is her commitment to using her voice for the greater good. By focusing on what can be created after hardship, her work offers reassurance, understanding and hope, turning experience into impact—one story, one child and one conversation at a time. Lenses + Lines: A collaborative canvas showcase
Nick Amrhein brings photography and tattoo art together By Melissa Lee Nick Amrhein’s creative journey began in his early teens with a skateboard and a camera. What started with capturing images of friends skateboarding became a lifelong passion. Influenced by skate culture’s raw visuals and DIY mindset, Amrhein spent years sketching, observing and developing a visual language rooted in motion and expression.
Shaped by movement, culture and community
After high school, Amrhein moved to Los Angeles and spent three years assisting high-end photographers on professional sets. That experience refined his technique, emphasizing lighting and studio work. When he returned to Toledo, opportunities quickly appeared. “People pay me here. I love the Midwest. I love Toledo,” Amrhein says. Returning home reshaped his perspective, informing the moody, cinematic edge of his work.
Finding inspiration downtown
Now living and working downtown, Nick draws inspiration from Toledo’s streets. Murals, graffiti and public art feed his creativity, reinforcing his belief in the power of local art scenes. “When you follow other artists and watch them push boundaries, it makes all of us better,” he explains. “In the last 8 months, I started drawing again. Photography and drawing together created the foundation for Lenses + Lines.”
Photography meets hand-crafted art
Lenses + Lines: A Collaborative Canvas Showcase features nine blackand-white portrait photographs shot by Amrhein, printed on large-scale canvases. Nine local artists then transform the images, using their own creative techniques, ranging from calligraphy and typography to illustrative line work, tattoo-style art, color and abstract design. Many of the artists have tattooing backgrounds, a medium which Amrhein deeply respects and personally connects with. “I’m covered in tattoos. They represent who I am as an artist,” he says. The collaborative work is both exciting and humbling. “I’m honored

those who have also found themselves at what feels like rock bottom.” Another topic Kyle returns to often as an Army vet is support for the US’ troops. Each album Oblivea has released has one song dedicated to the troops and is meant as a reminder of the role they play in protecting our freedoms. Elaborating, he said “that way you know I support the troops in the military. I love our military-thank you guys for keeping us free.”
What’s next for Ben Kyle?
On top of Oblivea’s 2026 tour Kyle is bringing his unflagging work ethic to several upcoming albums, both set to be released through Empire Records.
Kyle also has irons in a wide range of other fires. In addition to Oblivea, Kyle and his fiancee, Kristen Lindsey, are working on a reality program, entitled The Unseen, as well as a separate music project steeped in the dark wave genre typified by artists like Joy Division and Depeche Mode. An article could span pages and still barely touch on what Kyle’s creative spirit has pointed him towards and how it continues to drive him forward. Benjamin Kyle lives a lot of lives; and every single one to the fullest. Local show: Sat. April 25, 7pm @ Riverside BBQ, 915 N. Sumit St.
Ben Kyle recording Oblivea. Benjamin Kyle has lived a lot of lives. He’s been a musician, a stuntman, an interior designer and decorator and an occult investigator. It’s hard not to be impressed by the sheer force of will it takes to throw oneself so completely into each one of those lives. That indomitable spirit and desire to create is immediately apparent in the music of his band, Oblivea. Kyle said of Oblivea’s 2024 record, Immortal, “I spent about 200 hours on that record, that’s the commitment…sometimes if I start recording, I don’t stop until, like, four in the morning. I’m in that mode and I don’t want to stop.”
location and availability - but Kyle has every confidence in the full outfit he’s put together and is adamant that the Oblivea experience will consistently satisfy audiences regardless of the exact makeup of the band at each show. Kyle is a consummate showman and, in some ways, a little old fashioned. As the world of rock n’ roll leans further toward a simpler, more “DIY” aesthetic, Kyle believes firmly in the importance of stage presence for a compelling rock show. “We’re not a grunge band hitting the stage and playing the guitar,” he said. “We’re going to hit the stage with interesting lighting, fog and projection screens to give it that three-dimensional feel.
Approaching heavy music (and themes) with Hope
Oblivea is on the cusp of a big year. On the heels of their latest single,“Misery,” the band is set to embark on an ambitious tour. “We’re going to be doing about 40 shows coming up this year throughout the country and throughout the world,” said Kyle. Joining him is a coterie of Oblivea’s “Elite Warriors” (per their website), including guitarists Steve Cummings and Zephyr Roads, bassists Phil Witz and Ben Chapman along with drummer Ryche Green. Not everyone will be sharing the stage at the same time - band members will sub in and out based on
Oblivea touches on a wide range of topics, both light and heavy. Kyle sees his role as spreading honesty and positivity through his music. “That’s kind of always been my thought process. I want to be a positive message bringer. I mean, we might talk about some negative things, but at the end of the day, the end of the song, it’s supposed to be a positive.” He was talking specifically about one of the best examples of this juxtaposition - “One More Try.” Inspired by his own struggles, it touches on themes of self-hatred, despair, and self-harm, tempers it with a resolve to keep going and ultimately ends on something approaching hope. The message is clear: the song’s subject may have been through darkness, but they’ve come out the other side with a will to live on - to make the most of their “one more try.” Reinforcing that message of hope to
