Cake in a Cup will wrap up their operations at 6511 Central Ave. at the end of this holiday season, closing its doors after nearly 20 years. With rising ingredient costs and shifting foot traffic, the owners have chosen not to renew their lease.

While the storefront is closing, the team is exploring future possibilities like pop up shops or collaborations. The University of Toledo is extending in-state tuition rates to new undergraduate students who are Michigan residents in Fall 2026. Eligible students will save $4,680 per semester through an automatic scholarship that removes the out-of-state surcharge. Toledo Sail and Power Squadron Education, Safety & Community on the Water

For more than 90 years, the Toledo Sail and Power Squadron has upheld a simple but powerful mission: to promote safe boating through education, community and service. Whether you own a boat or simply love being around the water, this long-standing organization offers a welcoming place to learn, connect and grow.

A tradition of safety

Each spring and summer, the squadron provides free Vessel Safety Checks to help boaters ensure their equipment is compliant, functional and ready for the season. These inspections—performed by trained volunteers—are an essential part of the squadron’s dedication to safe boating practices throughout Northwest Ohio.

This year during Safe Boating Week, May 16-22, squadron volunteers will be on-site at West Marine, 6176 Summit St., providing Vessel Safety Checks specifically for trailered boats.

Boating education for everyone

2026 Toledo Auto Show

The Toledo Auto Show rolls into the Glass City Center, January 30-February 1, featuring the newest vehicles, interactive technologies and displays from major manufacturers. Families can enjoy the Kids Zone with balloon animals and face painting from 11am–3pm on Saturday and Sunday, along with bounce houses and an obstacle course. toledoautoshow.org

Education is at the heart of everything the Toledo Sail and Power Squadron does. While safe boating classes can be found online, TSPS offers in-person safe boating classes exclusively so all students can learn from and interact with experienced boaters. Members and prior students say this is invaluable.

You do not need to own a boat to join or participate. Many members simply enjoy learning about seamanship, navigation and boating safety, or they crew with fellow members during trips.

Community on the water

With 120 active members ranging from teenagers to those in their 90s, the Toledo Sail and Power Squadron is a diverse, multigenerational community. The squadron is also known for its boating adventures. Annual gatherings take members to popular Lake

Lies, damn lies, and affordability New Year’s resolutions in City Politics

Out with the old, in with the new.

The old year is gone. Twenny twenny six is looming over yon horizon. And what a year it appears to be.

In preparation, it’s time to make some City Politics New Year’s resolutions. Buckle up, buttercups. There are rough roads ahead.

Your lying eyes

Resolution número uno.

We hear there’s an affordability crisis in the you ess of ay. But don’t believe your lying bank account. Not here in the froggy bottom.

Nope. We’ve been repeatedly named one of the most affordable places to live in the entire country.

But are we?

That leads us to our first resolution. We think we’ve been spending too much time focusing on ridiculing public figures and not enough opining about the issues that fill your lying eyes. Or your lying checkbook.

Like the affordability crisis. Maybe it can happen here. Or maybe it already has. Maybe the gaslight really is a different brightness night by night.

Hmmm. Lessee.

Utility costs? Electricity, up dramatically. Thanks, data centers. Natural gas prices, up, and a cold winter ahead.

Gasoline prices, stable, for now.

Housing costs? Rents up by a lot, house prices up, and property taxes have ballooned. Likewise house insurance costs.

Grocery prices, up. And don’t get us started about health care. Up, up, up.

Health insurance costs astronomical, with rising premiums, copays, and deductibles.

Looks like the rise in the cost of swampy living is for real.

What else should we resolve to cover?

What other issues are swept under the proverbial froggy rug?

How about education? It looks like Toledo Public Schools is in financial crisis. Stingy state and federal funding cuts coupled with lack of school board planning means an emergency for the schools.

Welp, emergency is an overstatement. Seems like this fiscal cliff has been predictably in sight for months.

Only to be publicly ignored by school leadership.

Now an extreme plan to right the fiscal ship has been passed by the school board. Without public input, and with little public fanfare.

Yeah we gotta cover this shite.

Same for the fiscal cliff facing the City of Toledo. Wade lived fat off the COVID money windfall, and the bill has come due.

Meanwhile neighborhoods around the city continue to deteriorate. Economic development stagnates. Gun violence remains a scourge. Wade fiddles while froggy bottom burns.

Wade and City Council can’t event tax our way out of this.

So we at City Politics resolve to keep speaking truth to power, with emphasis on the critical issues facing us all.

Wouldn’t it be nice

We have one more resolution for the coming year. Being nicer.

We’ll cut the snark, stop the needles and digs, and act with more humility.

Then again, New Year’s resolutions are made to be broken. Ergo, don’t count on it.

Merry New Year.

Batten down the hatches, ye powerful women and men.

It’s gonna be a long year.

Because he is shaping the visual identity of Toledo at a scale few artists attempt.

He cold-called 85% of his clients, producing over 60,000 square feet of public art. He is now expanding into the River Gallery and forming partnerships with nonprofits like Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful organization to make public art more accessible and sustainable.

He is creating the blueprint for Toledo’s creative future—even though, as he says, “There is no playbook for decorating a city.”

Dean Davis believes Toledo is on the frontier of something great—its resilience, character and creative talent deserve to be seen on a grand scale.

His mission is to “decorate the city” in a way that reflects what the community loves and who they truly are. Like other cities known for murals, he wants Toledo to stand out by transforming its walls, silos and overlooked spaces into vibrant landmarks that tell the city’s story.

He sees public art not just as beautification, but as an educational, emotional, and cultural uplift. Murals can teach people about Toledo, attract visitors to admire its museums and parks and help residents—from the unhoused to the everyday 9-to-5 worker—feel inspired during tough seasons like winter.

His mission is not solely personal success—he wants to build an infrastructure that helps future Toledo artists work full-time without leaving the city.

Dean is pushing for a community where young creatives (including middle schoolers he is mentoring this winter) can contribute to real murals and see their ideas reflected in the city around them.

He has a vision that is bold, ambitious and transformative: build Toledo’s first fully professional ballet company—one that can stand alongside arts institutions in major cultural cities.

After four years as Artistic Director at Live Arts, he has been steadily shaping this dream into reality. His goal is to establish a company of eight full-time professional dancers, supported by a thriving ballet school, innovative programming and collaborations with Toledo’s symphony and broader arts community.

Eric believes Toledo is uniquely positioned for this growth. The city has the demographic strength, community enthusiasm and artistic infrastructure to sustain a professional ballet company.

In just three years, Live Arts has already expanded to three full-time dancers, a robust academy of 225 students, and a string of productions that continue to elevate the local arts landscape. With four large ballet studios next to the Stranahan Theater, Eric is developing a space where dance training, creativity and artistic excellence can flourish.

His big idea extends beyond technique and performance. He wants to bring the artistic energy of New York—Broadway talent, renowned choreographers, expert guest teachers—and merge it with Toledo’s hunger for cultural growth. He envisions programs that span ballet, jazz, orchestral collaborations and new works that push boundaries and expand what classical ballet can be in a modern, midwestern city.

For Eric, Toledo is not a stepping stone.

It is a community capable of sustaining true artistic innovation—and he is here to build it.

Executive Director at Toledo Lucas County Homelessness Board

People should know Julie because she is a connector and a problem-solver.

She brings people together, asks hard questions and pushes for new approaches when old systems fail. Her leadership is not about doing what’s easy—it’s about doing what’s necessary for the most vulnerable members of the community. Julie is transforming how Toledo understands, responds to, and supports people experiencing homelessness. Her mission is rooted in one belief: everyone deserves a safe place to live. While she acknowledges that homelessness can never be fully eliminated, her focus is on making the experience as brief, humane and trauma-informed as possible.

Julie challenges the myths surrounding homelessness, emphasizing that many individuals are thrust into complex systems while navigating impossible choices.

For young adults, trafficking survivors, seniors and families facing homelessness for the first time, the current system is often too rigid, too complicated, and too limited. She is committed to changing that.

Her work includes improving access to information, expanding user-friendly services, and finding flexible solutions that reach people who fall through eligibility gaps—especially vulnerable groups like 18–24-year-olds at Park Apartments or seniors who can no longer stay in shelters due to higher medical needs.

With rising housing costs, an aging housing market, and out-of-state buyers driving up prices, Julie is pushing for creative tools, more affordable housing options, and practical short-term supports that prevent homelessness before it happens.

Supported by a strong team and community partners, she has helped build a culture of trust—one where service providers can speak openly about needs, challenges and necessary change. In a time when homelessness has doubled and Toledo recently suffered an unacceptable loss of life, Julie’s work centers on honesty, collaboration and a belief that Toledo’s compassion can drive real solutions.

Founder, Hopson Elite Basketball Club

Dennis Hopson describes himself as a “person of substance,” and his life reflects that. A former professional athlete with a unique life journey, he brings lived experience, discipline and a strong sense of service into everything he does. He is committed to helping others at any cause, giving back and sharing what he’s learned. Most notably, he founded the Hopson Elite Basketball Club, a highly competitive program that: Gives young athletes a chance to play basketball at a high level, provides opportunities to travel and see the world beyond their neighborhood, connects players with mental-health professionals, helps showcase talent to college coaches and teaches life skills that go far beyond the court. For Hopson, it’s not about basketball—it’s about what basketball can do for the kids who love it.

Dennis Hopson’s vision is simple but urgently needed: create more opportunities for kids—real opportunities that support their growth, challenge them, and build their futures. He believes today’s youth don’t have enough positive outlets, structured programs or environments that encourage development beyond school. His dream is to see Toledo become a place where young people have safe spaces to learn, play and explore their potential.

Through his work, Hopson emphasizes that sports—especially basketball—can be far more than a game. When structured with purpose, athletics become a bridge to life skills, travel, mentorship, exposure and new experiences. His big idea isn’t just “keep kids busy”—it’s to equip them to grow into confident, resilient adults. Whether it’s leadership, discipline, teamwork or emotional support, he believes that every young person deserves access to tools that help them see the world differently and see themselves differently.

At the core, Hopson wants to expand what’s possible for kids in Toledo.

It’s about opening doors that many children don’t even realize exist.

Lucas County Commissioner — Board President

People should know Commissioner Sobecki because she is a worker at heart—driven by service, not spotlight. Her public life began in 2008 as a “mom on a mission,” running for school board to protect and strengthen public education. Since then, she has remained a consistent advocate for the people she represents, always striving to offer the best answer regardless of political lines. Her leadership has never been about personal attention; it has always been about how we move our schools, our state and our county forward together.

She never planned to become a county commissioner—she was asked to serve, and she stepped forward because her community believed in her ability to lead. From school board to state representative to county commissioner, she has witnessed and contributed to the evolution of women’s leadership in local government.

Commissioner Lisa A. Sobecki is reshaping how Lucas County plans, collaborates and advocates for its future. Her big idea is the creation of the first-ever strategic plan for Lucas County—a living roadmap that brings residents, leaders and partners together with one voice.

For the past three years, she has helped unite public and private stakeholders through the Toledo Legislative Alliance, coordinating trips to Washington, D.C. to present a shared federal vision for Toledo and Lucas County.

At the core of her mission is stability and modernization: strengthening the county’s financial health, improving internal and external communication, and updating government systems that have lagged behind the pace of community innovation. Under her leadership, the county has maintained a stable bond rating, passed its operating budget early and moved forward on long overdue modernization efforts. She is preparing Lucas County for challenges ahead—including shifting administrative costs to counties. Her work is grounded in collaboration, transparency and empowerment. By engaging residents directly in shaping the new strategic plan, she is creating a county framework that reflects community voices while building a stronger, more resilient future for all.

Founder Farm Labor Organizing Committee — FLOC Baldemar Velasquez is the President of FLOC, a national labor union fighting for farmworkers’ rights for decades. He believes the American people need to hear a more truthful, compassionate and practical message about immigration—one shaped by real workers, real numbers, and real human stories. His leadership connects Toledo to a national and international movement for economic justice and fair labor practices.

Baldemar Velasquez is calling for Americans to think more clearly, rationally and humanely about immigration—starting with the real causes, not just the symptoms that dominate political debates. From Toledo, he and FLOC (the Farm Labor Organizing Committee) have launched a national effort to reframe immigration as an economic and foreign-policy issue, not merely a border issue. He argues that much of the current crisis stems from unsustainable foreign policies, trade deals that have displaced millions of workers abroad and a U.S. economy heavily dependent on undocumented labor.

Velasquez highlights a critical reality: industries like hospitality, construction and especially agriculture rely on undocumented workers to survive. In agriculture alone, an estimated 40–45% of the workforce is undocumented, and these laborers are now facing wage cuts that drop their pay to $4–$5 an hour under recent Department of Labor policy changes. He calls this not only an injustice but a threat to America’s food supply.

What’s one thing people should know about your business?

We are not clinicians. We do not dispense medication. We do not diagnose.

One thing that we do and is the main part of our mission we “improve the quality of life for persons living with mental illness.” We help people to feel better mentally.

What do you wish your clients didn’t do, and what are you proud of them for doing?

I wish that our members would not judge themselves harshly, adopt stigma or allow shame in their lives. I am proud when our members “show up” make it through the night, navigate the day and can be both strong and weak at the same time and still survive.

What is a commonly-held belief that you encounter in your practice that may not be correct?

When people are defined or identify with traits such as narcissist, personality disorder and bipolar we should not treat them as problems or judge them but with compassion because they did not ask to be a certain way. Trauma is something that we all should work to understand.

I start my day by: Smiling, including when I’m in pain. I know it is one thing that I have full control over.

The most unanticipated entrée­­— barbecued ribs, a half-rack of hot and tender, meat-heavy bones slathered with a delicious smoky sauce.

1984 was the year of the Summer Olympics on American soil. The year Orwell predicted we’d be living under the reign of Big Brother. The year Prince, Springsteen, and Madonna were cemented as pop culture icons. And in Toledo, way out on Bancroft St. in a former Prohibition-era, Purple Gang-operated speakeasy, Ventura’s opened under the ownership of Alfred Mundt and his wife Adela.

Forty one years later, Ventura’s is still going strong, under the guidance of Mundt’s daughter Valerie Scott and her business partner Todd Pierson. In the ensuing decades since the opening, not much has really changed. The salsa and guacamole are still freshly made daily and served with crisp tortilla chips, and everything on the diverse menu— offering both Mexican and American cuisine—is cooked to the satisfaction of patrons.

Still, all in the family

Ventura’s remains a family affair after all these years. Valerie’s daughter Kristen and her son-in-law Jacob work there along with two of Todd’s children – Jeremy and Jacy. The name of the game at Ventura’s is family togetherness and hearty, satisfying cuisine that makes you happy.

Ventura’s is almost like Cheers, where everybody knows your name. Many people have been coming to Ventura’s for decades, passing down the tradition to their kids and grandkids. When you are waiting for a table, you’re likely to run into someone you know. It’s a familiar place, one that keeps people coming back again and again.

The menu, an eclectic collection of tried and true Mexican favorites, includes soft taco fajitas or delicious bar-

becue pulled pork enchiladas. Or try the Nachos Sampler, a plate-full of large tortillas chips, each dressed with an abundance of melted cheese and assorted toppings.

Perhaps the most unanticipated entrée is the barbecued ribs, a half-rack of hot and tender, meat-heavy bones slathered with a delicious smoky sauce that’s truly finger-lickin’ good.

“The ribs are the best-kept secret on our menu,” explains Scott. “We have Mexican dishes but lots of American food too. People love the diversity of our menu. We also have great burgers and homemade soups.”

Accompanying the varied menu is the table service—always quick and courteous. The margaritas are also worth a try, particularly the raspberry flavored, which are wonderfully tart and potent.

Ventura’s offers Margarita Tuesday’s with specials on all of their delicious margaritas. They also operate one of the best Happy Hours in Toledo every Tuesday through Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., featuring food and drink specials galore. People come from far and wide to partake in the Ventura’s Happy Hour and with one sip of a margarita or bite of an appetizer, it’s easy to understand why As for Valerie Scott, Ventura’s is her life’s work and she couldn’t be happier serving great food to generations of Toledo families. “We’ve grown significantly in business since ’84, but running the restaurant is still pretty much the same,” said Scott. “It’s a tried and true formula that we’ve been working on perfecting since 1984.”

In the past couple of years, Toledo has hosted 20th Century Studios’ actioncomedy Eenie Meanie (starring Samara Weaving), which filmed scenes at Hollywood Casino Toledo, for what could be the best part of the movie. Also The Office spin-off series, The Paper, is set in a fictional newsroom, the Toledo Truth Teller, right in our city. And Otto, played

by Tom Hanks, wandered Toledo’s sunlit streets, filmed quietly, capturing history, stone, shadows, and everyday life moments.

And props to the growing indie scene here, with filmmakers making honest, thoughtful work. It’s hard not to notice the momentum.

A twist of Fate

At the center of that wave is Toledoarea filmmaker Vanessa Leonard. Her second feature, Unwrapping Fate, premieres January 17 at the Maumee Indoor — a perfect venue for a film like this. Toledoans don’t want flashy. We want intimate, nostalgic, and definitely local. Which tells you everything you need to know: that story belongs here.

The story follows Laura (Victoria Rinker), who retreats to a small town after a painful separation, hoping peace is something she can still obtain by selecting a location on a map. That illusion shatters when her dad has a stroke and

pulls her back to the city— and back into complicated territory with her ex-husband Jeremy (Elliott Kreim).

It’s the kind of situation most of us dread. You know, when life forces an emotional reconciliation before you’ve finished doing your homework. So, their unplanned reunion asks a deceptively simple question: Has time healed anything, or just rearranged the mess?

Props to Leonard for wearing every hat during this production. She’s behind the camera, in the editing room, vetting the story, directing the actors, and even appearing on screen.

That DIY approach has been Leonard’s style since her debut feature, A Story Worth Living, a stripped-down mental health drama that tackled depression, hope and the uphill battle to maintain the belief that your life still means something. Unwrapping Fate continues Leonard’s emotionally grounded storytelling with something to say about the messiness of our relationships colliding.

At 64 minutes, the film’s pace is clearly designed to keep things lean and focused. Thank you for avoiding the 150 minute runtimes that seem to be the norm these days.

Yes, the film was shot in Toledo and Findlay. And if you watch the trailer closely, I’m 99.9% sure Fifth Third Field sneaks in for a cameo. Which, frankly, should be a selling point. Mud Hens baseball belongs in more movies. Leonard brings Laura’s world to life with real, local voices. Toledo authenticity at its finest.

Beyond the kitchen: A story larger than restaurant life

Anneke, the corporate manager of Kengo Sushi & Yakitori, Kato Ramen and Papa Kato’s Karaage in Toledo’s Warehouse District, titled her memoir as a cheeky play on a phrase common in restaurant kitchens: “Heard!”

Ramen and restaurant metaphors aside, Kurt’s memoir is much more than the chaos and adrenaline-fueled sagas often chronicled in restaurant retrospectives. She actually found meditative bliss in the repetitive cycle of kitchen life. “The adrenaline and chaos of the restaurants were — and still are — tame and predictable compared to the disorder and instability I was hiding, that found solace in the hot, rushed, stressful madness that is a bustling restaurant.”

In March 2025, Anneke was reeling from an intense break-up. At 41 years old, the split hit harder than a usual ‘parting of ways,’ and she had to come to terms with the fact that with the closure of this relationship also came the confirmation that she would bear no more children.

Rather than wallow in her pain, she channeled her grief, embarking on an Eat, Pray, Love journey of personal transformation. She got a refund for the ski trip she had arranged with her ex and instead traveled solo to Amsterdam, Lisbon and Greece.

Her goal for that trip was to finish the book she had been working on for years. With a background in the world of legal marketing, and although she has written books and web content before, the words she had written had always been in someone else’s voice, telling someone else’s story.

The chance to tell her own story

“Heard was the first time I was writing for myself,” explains Anneke, “ . . .my story as I experienced it. There was a lot of fear attached to that. Some of these truths I had never ‘spoken’ out loud, let alone memorialized on paper.

That was scary, and extremely emotional.”

Learning to hear the quiet parts of herself

As Anneke wrote, traveled and contemplated her own truth, she began to understand that the story she was telling wasn’t just about heartbreak — it was about finally listening to the parts of herself she had spent years quieting. Away from the noise of obligation and expectation, she found clarity in the simple routines of solo travel: long walks through cobblestone streets, silent mornings with coffee, unhurried hours spent writing in cafés by the water. “Now I seek out the intuition instead of ignoring it for as long as possible,” Anneke explains.

With Heard now out in the world, Anneke is turning toward connection. She hopes the memoir opens conversations about healing, choice and the courage to rewrite one’s own narrative. And she has begun drafting new pieces of writing, exploring themes that surfaced in her travels but didn’t fit neatly into the book.

A Ripple of Inspiration

Toledo native gives back through scholarship

When Nusaiba Rahman steps onto a stage in New York City, she still thinks of Maumee and the first people who clapped for her. Growing up in Maumee and attending Anthony Wayne High School, Rahman discovered a community that supported her music and theater dreams—encouragement that continues to shape her path as a musician and entrepreneur.

At AWHS, she sang and played guitar in talent shows and won the school’s Big Business Idea entrepreneurship contest. Rahman also performed in community theater, playing Jasmine in Aladdin at Bowling Green’s Horizon Theatre, performing in A Christmas Carol with Toledo Repertoire Theatre, and competing at the Maumee Summer Fair, where she placed second. Years of training at Forte School of Music and Perrysburg School of Music gave her both technical skill and confidence.

The support Rahman received growing up in Toledo continues to resonate with her. Performing in New York, she often thinks back to the small-town stages and the people who first believed in her.

Life and Work in New York City

After studying tech and entrepreneurship at UC Berkeley, Rahman moved to New York City to pursue her music career. She writes, sings, and performs original songs that blend her small-town roots with the energy of city life. Her song “Stranger Things” is available on Spotify, and she shares her music online @nusaiba_music and @ nusaibatron.

Launching the Nusaiba Rahman Scholarship

This year, Rahman launched the 2025 Nusaiba Rahman Scholarship for AWHS seniors, inspired by the support she received from her hometown. The essay prompt—“What does the world need more of?”—drew more than 30 submissions. The winner, Grant Smith, wrote about volunteering with the FCCLA, the Ronald McDonald Foundation, and St. Luke’s Soup Kitchen in New York City, embodying the same spirit of giving back Rahman experienced as a student.

The theme of Grant’s essay emphasized not just thinking about yourself, but also holding the door open for the person behind you.

“Reading Grant’s essay reminded me why I started this,” Rahman says. “The same community spirit that helped me chase my dreams is alive in students like him.” The $100 scholarship covers a college application fee, with plans to grow the program in the future.

Why Giving Back Matters

Rahman hopes her scholarship inspires other alumni to create small acts of support for students in their hometowns. “You don’t have to be wealthy to start a scholarship,” she says. “Anyone can spark a tiny moment that helps someone younger. That’s how communities grow.”

Peer support is uniquely valuable because it comes from someone who has recently faced the same challenges, making guidance feel relatable and achievable. Unlike family or older adults, peers can show that growth and success are possible in ways that feel real and attainable.

For Rahman, giving back is closing the loop—returning to the community that first gave her a stage. “If one student feels that spark, it’s all worth it.”

Every small act of generosity—like a single scholarship—can set off a ripple, inspiring others to lift up the next generation and keep the spirit of community alive.

IN THE SPORTS ZONE Inside the Glass City Wranglers’ Community Approach to Basketball

The move Downtown and fan-first culture fuel growing impact.

By Andrew Kersten Toledo is known for its sports culture, from the Mud Hens in the summer to the Walleye in the colder months. While, on the basketball court, the Glass City Wranglers have been steadily carving out their place. The team has grown over the years, shaped by local roots, returning athletes with a focus on player development and community connection.

Joshua Radtkin, the Wranglers’ executive director, runs the organization with his wife, Jes, who serves as vice president. Under their leadership, the Wranglers have competed in The Basketball League (TBL) in the United States and last season played in Canada’s Basketball Super League (BSL), creating visibility, building relationships, and playing in larger arenas.

The team will return to TBL for the 2026 season, with preseason road exhibitions against BSL teams.

“I had a seven-to-ten-year plan to eventually get us downtown,” Radtkin said. “We accomplished that goal sooner than anticipated.” Radtkin explains that the move downtown has helped shape the game-day atmosphere into something more complete. “Our home games are now a full professional entertainment experience,” he said. “Fans can enjoy concessions, adult beverages, our new dance team, mascot involvement and entertainment throughout the game.”

This all helps to create an environment where everyone feels welcome, regardless of whether they consider themselves basketball fans. “Even if someone isn’t a big basketball fan, our home games are a chance for families to get together and enjoy a safe, affordable night out,” Radtkin said. “It brings people downtown, supports local businesses and gives families something fun to be part of together.”

Building a Foundation for Toledo Basketball

In its early seasons, the team played home games at Scott, Bowsher, and Maumee Valley Country Day high schools as well as Owens Community College. “It helped us connect with different communities and show that we were serious about growing something real,” Radtkin said, adding that the focus has always been creating an environment that is affordable, welcoming and enjoyable for families. “From day one, we have promoted family-fun, affordable, professional DeVonte basketball.”

Wranglers’ Players Shape the Team

The Wranglers’ roster has always included a mix of local players along with athletes from across the country. Early teams leaned heavily on Toledo-area athletes returning home after college careers. As the organization grew, it began attracting former Division I athletes, G League players and athletes with international professional experience.

One player who has remained central to the team’s identity is DeVonte Pratt, a Toledo native and former Rogers High School standout who helped lead the Rams to state runner-up finishes in 2010 and 2013. “Playing at Rogers taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to compete with purpose,” Pratt said. “It wasn’t just about winning. It was about learning how to lead, stay humble and push through adversity.

Those experiences built the foundation

for how I approach the game today.”

Those lessons stayed with Pratt well beyond high school and helped shape what it means for him to play in Toledo now. “It gives me a chance to inspire the next generation, to show kids that they can chase their dreams right where they come from,” he said. “It’s bigger than basketball; it’s about giving back to the community that raised me.”

Pratt, with the help of the Wranglers’ coaching staff and culture, has catapulted himself into SlamBall on ESPN. “Playing for the Wranglers helped keep my skills sharp, staying active, and on point for other jobs I’ve had,” he said. “The pace, physicality and teamwork with the Wranglers translated perfectly into that next level of competition.”

People don’t always see the grind behind the scenes,” Pratt said. “The early mornings, late nights, and constant focus it takes to stay sharp. It’s not just

talent; it’s about commitment, mental toughness and a real love for the game.

The brotherhood and support system make the Wranglers special,” he said.

“It’s more than just teammates. It’s family.”

Service to the community remains a core element of the Wranglers’ identity.

Players and staff participate in youth programs, school visits, holiday drives and local nonprofit support efforts.

Even players who take opportunities elsewhere often return to take part in clinics or special events.

The organization has also expanded its reach through broadcasts on BCSN, where viewership has increased each year. “Everyone who comes to a game leaves with a smile on their face,” Radtkin said. “They have fun, and they are fans for life.”

Looking Ahead to the Wranglers 2026 Season

The Wranglers 2026 season includes 10 home games, with preseason exhibitions against Basketball Super League teams. The full schedule will be released early next year.

“Winning games is one thing. What makes all of this worthwhile is getting people to come to your games and to believe in what you are doing,” Radtkin said. “We have done that by being visible, by being real and by making it fun.””
