BEYOND 40 DAYS...

I am now in the phase of the program where I am directed to maintain my new weight. After losing 40 pounds I was intimidated to leave the sanctuary of the limited food plan and to fly "without a safety net." This phase is less restrictive and employs common sense and what I have learned over the last 2 decades of near constant watching what I eat - minimal starches and sugar while counting calories. I am using an app on my phone ( I am not tech savvy and it is not difficult) called My Fitness Pal. Based on the calculations Nick Dumas has done for me, I am now directed to eat 2900 calories per day. This will ensure that my metabolism comes out of a weight loss range and into a mode to continue to burn calories that I eat every day. After the lower calorie counts of the first 40 days ( I again remind you, I was never hungry) the increased freedom in food selection is welcomed but, as I said, somewhat intimidating.

I am doing fine and have maintain the same weight, within a few tenths of a pound for over a week now. Eating in restaurants has posed no problem and when I was transitioning between the weight loss phase ond this new maintenance phase I was on vacation for 10 days. That's right no meals at home, selecting food in restaurants , and I LOST another 8 pounds WHILE ON VACATION. That is incredible.

I have tremendous energy, I am sleeping well ( never my strong suit), and everyone I bump into tells me what a difference they see - several have commented that I look 5 years younger! The only regret I have is that I did not do this sooner. This transformation has provided me with a new outlook and perspective and everything I do seems to be smoother and easier.

UT teams with community colleges to attract international students

UT offers Cosmetic Science program The University of Toledo’s Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design program is the only bachelor’s program of its kind in the United States. The major teaches students how to formulate, produce and test cosmetics and personal care products. In addition to learning how to make these products, students are taught how to design, market and develop them.

“Many students and parents got the program confused with cosmetology – painting nails, doing makeup and cutting hair,” said Dr. Gabriella Baki, UT assistant professor of pharmaceutics, who specializes in cosmetic science. “But this is a science; we teach students how to make products from scratch, how to test them, package them and make sure they’re safe for the consumer.”

Students get to create more than 100 products through the course of a year and take them home when they’re finished, Baki said. She also invites speakers from the professional industries and the Food and Drug Administration to present to her classes.

In May 2014, the first students graduated from the program: Kayla Banks, Sarah Breen and Alison Wery.

“Looking back, it is pretty amazing the wide array of things we were able to learn in such a short time,” Breen said. “Armed with what I learned at UT, I am able to take a new product all the way from the idea stage through marketing, including ingredient selection, formulation, testing, packaging and marketing plans.”

To complement the program, a student organization has been created. The University of Toledo Cosmetic Chemists Society was instituted in October and is the only student cosmetic science organization in Ohio.

“I definitely think my college career has been enhanced by the cosmetic science program. It was a little dull before that. I feel like I finally found what I’m supposed to do,” said Hillary Phillis, the first president of the organization who graduated in December with a degree in pharmaceutics and cosmetic science.

The University of Toledo is changing the way international students study in the United States, with the help of a few community colleges.

A new program called the UT-Community College Internationalization Consortium kicks off this semester. It brings together four community colleges in Ohio and Michigan – Henry Ford College, Jackson College, Schoolcraft College and Columbus State Community College – with either higher vocational colleges in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hebei and Hunan provinces in China.

“I think if you really want to be educated for the work force of the future, you’re going to have to develop your global competence,” said Dr. Ron Opp, executive director of the consortium and UT associate professor of educational leadership. “You’re going to need the ability to communicate interculturally; that’s going to be the nature of work in a global economy.”

Many community colleges want to have more international students, but often don’t have the resources four-year schools have, Opp said. Consortium staff will help these community colleges make connections with partner higher vocational colleges in China, and will assist them in working with their partners in developing joint degree programs.

“America is one of the most technologically advanced countries, and China is among the fastest developing countries,” said Dr. Bin Jiao, vice president at Shanghai Dianji University, who visited UT in December with other delegates from Shanghai Dianji. “I think from this kind of collaboration we can learn from each other.”

The consortium will being by accepting five students from each Chinese college in Fall 2015, 10 students the following fall, 15 the following year, and so on. By 2018, the first 40 students will be enrolling at UT for their bachelor’s degree programs.

Toledo Free School is opening their doors to the Toledo community to learn and teach classes for free.

“The idea is to provide free education in a decentralized and democratic way,” said Lance Crandall, teacher and organizer of Toledo Free School.

Crandall, an education major at Owens Community College, said the idea of Toledo Free School is to actually provide students with skills, and not just abstract notions.

Grace Powers, a teacher and organizer, said other cities across the country have similar organizations, and one common denominator is they are communitybased. “I think one really neat thing about free schools is that it pulls all of the resources in that community. In Toledo, we have so many individuals with so much knowledge and skillsets, it’s unbelievable,” she said.

Christi Meredith will be teaching a Beginner Stained Glass class. “I decided to teach because there are so many people out there like me that want to learn these specialized skills but don’t have access to a classroom setting, or can’t afford to pay for private lessons,” Meredith said.

Kerri DeShetlerer will be teaching the Dendrology class—the study of trees—at the end of February. “I wanted to share my love for the forest and Dendrology with my fellow Toledo residents,” she said.

According to DeShetler, her students can look forward to a short classroom session followed by a hike in Ottawa Park, where they will go over winter identification of common trees in the Toledo area.

Meredith said her students will start out making a 6-8” suncatcher, and in the process, learn how to cut, grind, foil and solder the glass together.

Take a class, teach a class

The main goal of Toledo Free School is keeping everything free. “School debt is out of control especially for adults and even the organization and structure of traditional schools feels top-down and authoritarian,” Crandall said, “and I think opening it up to a horizontal or democratically organized way will give students as much power as other teachers.”

Toledo Free School will have their major public launch on Saturday, March 21 at the Gerber House, the white building at 2413 Collingwood Blvd. in front of the Collingwood Arts Center.

“Teachers who will later be teaching a class will basically be offering that topic as a one-time introductory thing [at this event],” Crandall said.

Registration is recommended but not necessary to join the event.

A wide range of topics is offered through classes at the Toledo Free School. “Anyone can teach a class, and anyone can take a class,” Crandall said.

On the organization’s website, there is a form that potential teachers must fill out. According to both Crandall and Powers, if a potential teacher would like to teach children, precautions are taken and background checks are done.

Sean Nestor has been a teacher at Owens Community College and the University of Toledo for 10 years, and will be teaching a class titled Exposing Truth with Public Data, which will show how to obtain and analyze public information.

“This experience promises to be different,” Nestor said. “I have unprecedented freedom to create a curriculum that highlights my personal skill set while responding directly to the needs of everyday people.”

What a difference a day makes The grim political reality of City Politics

ubiquitous question, what foul machinations had the Finkly stink on them?

Then the unthinkable happened: Mayor Collins passed away in office.

Suddenly, a ho-hum political year has become a hotbed of political blood sport, as the foibles of the Charter of the City of Toledo have been exposed and the wildest succession election in the history of the City is about to unfold.

There are several backstories to the current conundrum. Mayor Collins was elected without the backing of either major party, which means either party would have liked to challenge him at the end of his term in Twenty Seventeen. Rumored to be eyeing a run were current and former elected officials, from Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz to Councilman Rob Ludeman, from Gerken to Councilman Tom Waniewski, from failed Twenty Thirteen candidate and County Auditor Anita Lopez to State Rep Michael Ashford, with a side dish of Toledo’s Finance Director and former Councilman Georgie Sarantou.

On the last day of January, the waters of the Big Muddy were brown with silt and mostly frozen over. But they were relatively calm.

Twenty-four hours later, the waters were riled and turbulent, like a pond filled with carp after you throw in a handful of bait. That noise you hear is the sucking sound of bottom feeders grasping greedily for the newly discovered meal.

If all had gone as anticipated, this year’s election cycle would have been a minor blip on the political radar. Nothing on the ballot but small-time races in the ‘burbs and townships and elections of district reps in T-Town. Five of those six races would feature incumbents. None would be considered particularly vulnerable to electoral challenge. The only open seat would be in District Three, vacated by term-limited Mike Craig. That would likely provide the only political hijinx.

Political junkies would be much more interested in rumors of upcoming electoral comebacks. Was Mikey Bellbottoms considering a run at County Commissioner Pete Gerken in Twenty Sixteen? Which festering political vendetta would Sleepy Walrus Jack Ford pick at next? And the

those votes a dozen ways this year, and who knows who comes out on top?

This fact isn’t lost on the rapacious piscine politicos listed above.

They can all see their chance to unseat newly elevated Mayor Paula Hicks Hudson, who replaces Mayor Collins through the remainder of this year. Nor is it lost on Bell and Carty and the ever lurking and usually dozing J Fo, all of whom could enter the fray. Throw in the nutbags and crank cases like Terry Shankland and Opal Covey and whack jobs to be named later, and we predict a frenzied finish unprecedented in our town.

These potential suitors of the city electorate would have had to face a tough primary race, hoping to squeak through for a final head-to-head between the top two vote-getters. Eliminate the fluff, and then make it through a majority rules election for the leader of Frogopolis. The chosen mayor would have to be selected by over fifty percent of the voting citizenry.

There’s a September primary election this year along with a November general election. It would make sense that a successor to Mayor Collins would have to get through the primary, and the top two would square off in November. This is what would have happened two years from now if the events of November First hadn’t. It’s also what has happened in every mayoral race since the charter change that created the strong mayor form of government in the early 1990s.

But that same charter change now will have it otherwise. The numbskulls who drafted the early 1990s change had the harebrained idea that, if there is a vacancy in the mayor’s office, it should be filled at the next general election. No primary.

One-time run off, winner take all.

In the off-year election of Twenty Eleven, about 61,000 Toledoans voted. Split

Rejection election

Imagine the unthinkable. Votes are split and strewn to the point where no one candidate gets more than six or seven thousand of the total cast. That would mean that the top vote-getter might become mayor with a plurality of 10 or 15 percent of the vote. Put a different way, the next mayor may have been rejected by an overwhelming majority of nearly 90 percent of the voting public.

Thinking about it that way, we have no doubt Carty will get in the race. He can absolutely count on being rejected by an overwhelming majority, just as he can count on an equally rabid base to push him toward the top of a crowded field. Talk about Finkly stink. This town isn’t ready for “Carty IV: This Time It’s, ‘Get Over Here, Fatso.’”

We shudder at the political perils that slink beyond the near horizon. And what dunderheads concocted the charter change that allowed for all this nuttiness of a no-primary race for mayor?

Would you believe it was Carty and J Fo? Nah, we didn’t think you would.

Believe us, folks, you can’t make this stuff up.

If identity thieves were snakes, ...

A Toledo woman reported identity fraud on December 30, after two suspects arrived at her house and told her she had won a free cell phone and said they needed certain information in order for her to qualify. The woman said she only became suspicious after the suspects photographed her social security card and Medicaid card.

An Auburn Ave. Stop-and-Shop employee reported a man for forgery and criminal endangering on December 30. The man attempted to cash a check for $1,950, and the employee informed him that the check was stolen. The suspect began to damage store merchandise and threatened to “come back with a gun and shoot the place up.”

$5 carpool

After dropping off her friend and turning around at an intersection, a Toledo woman said an unknown male suspect got into the rear passenger seat. The suspect pointed the gun at the victim and demanded she give him all of her money. She gave him $5 and he fled the scene.

The little train that couldn’t

The Norfolk Southern RR blocked the crossing at the 800 block of Ford St., Maumee for an “extended period of time” on January 10. The railroad was charged with Blocked Crossing and a summons was issued.

Mary Wolfe

(1931-2014)

One of Toledoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most developed accomplishments is our arts scene, and Mary Wolfe was one of its true champions. As an art lecturer and well-known patron of the arts, she and her husband Fritz helped fund the Wolfe Center for the Arts at Bowling Green State University in 2011. They also gave generously to the Toledo Museum of Art, so the museum could make necessary renovations. Wolfe was a co-founder of the Apollo Society, the entity that aids in art acquisitions. She passed in October 2014, leaving behind a strong legacy and an art community that thrives as a result of her efforts.

Looking at “Pretty Fire,” a one-woman show

by Emily Remaklus The power of theater is an amazing thing—simple words written on a page can come to life and express so much.

Pretty Fire is a great example of the power of words, as the play is a onewoman show with no set. The show relies on the ability of a single actress to take the audience on a journey through the life of a young girl.

A solo story

The Actors Collaborative Toledo and Artists Series will produce the show as a benefit for the Ella P. Stewart Academy for Girls. Directed by Barbara Barkan with Dr. Dafina-Lazarus Stewart in the role of Charlayne, this is sure to be an amazing production.

Written by Charlayne Woodard, Pretty Fire depicts the childhood of a young African American girl in the 1950s as an autobiographical play—the stories come from Charlayne’s life. Dr. Stewart not only takes on the role of Charlayne at various ages, but also portrays everyone else in the story. Using simply her voice and body (no costume changes), she must take on other personas, such as Charlayne’s mother and grandmother.

Since Dr. Stewart is the only actress on a bare stage, she has the tough challenge of bringing these stories to life and creating a setting in the mind of the

audience. Woodard created a beautifully written stage performance, and the way she describes her childhood makes it easy to picture her past.

With sorrow, joy

The play begins with her birth; Charlayne shares how she was born prematurely and astonishingly survived through the night. The audience is taken on a journey of her childhood struggles, as well as some darker issues of racism and violence. These issues, however, are written through the eyes of a child, creating a sense of innocence.

The story from which the play received its name is, in fact, a story about racism.

During one scene, Charlayne and her sister watch the Ku Klux Klan burn a cross and, not realizing what it symbolizes, cry out “pretty fire, pretty fire, pretty fire!” until their grandmother’s fear and anger causes them to stop. Along with sorrow there is joy, and the play contains a great sense of humor with a remarkable take on the bond and strength of family.

The show does contain some adult language and intense themes dealing with sexual and racial violence, and is recommended for adult audiences. $10. 8pm, Saturday, February 28.

Not just for bestsellers

Local journal sets a stage for writers of all kinds

by Catherine McGowan The lack of reading fees, six-month waiting periods, and genre restrictions are what sets The Quill apart from other poetry and nonfiction journals. The independent reading journal is based in Northwest Ohio, with a focus on short fiction and poetry. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to help other writers like me who are just starting out, or are not on the New York Timesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Best Seller List,â&#x20AC;? said Kevin Moore, founder of The Quill, professor of history at Owens Community College, and author of historical fiction novel The Golden Merra.

The journal started in 2009 as a one-man operation, with Moore printing and delivering copies of the journal to various coffee shops and libraries throughout the region. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It grew to be very popular, I was printing 500 copies a month,â&#x20AC;? Moore said.

He explained that managing the journal by himself became time-consuming and expensive, and he took a hiatus from the project in 2010.

In summer 2014, Moore and his colleague Carl Dietrich rekindled the effort.

While Moore is in charge of the short fiction section of the journal, Dietrich handles poetry submissions. With the exception of erotica and fan fiction, â&#x20AC;&#x153;weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re open to really any genre out there,â&#x20AC;? Moore said. The only other requirement for short fiction submissions are that the piece must be under 10,000 words in length, while any style of poetry is accepted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to create something that was a little more open for people,â&#x20AC;? Moore said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of writing journals are very specific . . . 'We only take science fiction,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;We only take mystery,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re outside of that specific genre then theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not interested.â&#x20AC;?

Moore explained there is a greater diversity in Quill submissionsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;both in content and authorshipâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; compared to writing journals based in academia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have writers who have their masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in creative writing, and then writers who just do it as a hobby,â&#x20AC;? he said. The goal for Moore is to create a place where both types of work can exist harmoniously.

Mural conversations bring art to the foreground

The Love Wall at 13th and Adams Sts. was transformed by ACT and local artist Matt Taylor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Art has no choice but to lead to improvement,â&#x20AC;? said Rachael Richardson, creator of Art Corner Toledo with the appropriate alliteration, ACT. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My definition of art is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the deliberate creation.â&#x20AC;?

Following the success of the Toledo Loves Love mural project at Adams and 15th Sts., Richardson went on to propose future public art through a series of murals and is commissioned to run 15 projects throughout the area before October 31, 2015. These murals include the long green wall between Huron & Superior by Erie St. Market, Jack Wilsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Studio at 19 S. St. Clair, Dorr & Smead Sts., Library Village in the parking lot of Schroyer's Auto Repair Shop, and Adams and 13th Sts.â&#x20AC;&#x201D;perpendicular to the Toledo Loves Love Wall.

Richardson says that the murals have an impact that is measurable, and cites that business owners and residents in the area have reported a feeling of safety and pride in their neighborhoods. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People stop and they ask you what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing. It's a conversational piece thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purely positive. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no room for any negativity near it,â&#x20AC;? she said of the projects. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some people say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;That's really coolâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m an artist too.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to giving work to Toledo artists, public art communicates a vibrancy and energy that brings about a sense of community and profits businesses and general outlook. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When people ask about the return on investment, I say the return is a more livable city,â&#x20AC;?

It's no coincidence that places like The Moxie, a self-described arthouse pub, has moved in with the momentum of the art scene. And on a larger scale, ProMedica's Ebeid Center is slated to open at Madison and 18th Sts., along with a grocery store for downtown dwellers.

Richardson said, citing that the most expensive part of mural projects is reaching the scaffolding. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last year the equipment (for that), the bucket lifts alone cost about 20K.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I do get really excited on the day we prime the wall. Artistic diversity

Guitar exhibit is for fans of sound and science

by Zach Gasior As spring approaches, the Imagination Station is ready to provide patrons with another awesome exhibit to learn and explore the life behind a musical icon. It’s not a person, but an instrument, and one that changed music forever: The guitar. Modern music would not be the same without it, and visitors to the Station’s newest exhibit will get a comprehensive look at its evolution and history.

“GUITAR: The Instrument that Rocked the World” presents an inside look at the instrument’s past and present. “The guitar is one of the most popular instruments in the world,” said Paul Morin, public relations and communications coordinator for Imagination Station. “We want to introduce people to science through something they are familiar with, so the guitar was a natural fit.”

The exhibit will trace the history of the guitar from its origins—nearly 5,000 years ago—to its modern-day usage, and provide the chance to experience the science behind the sound. From wood to steel and aluminum, “There have been a lot of innovations that have gone into guitars,” Morin added. Patrons will be able to feel and hear that change for themselves.

Featuring more than 60 sample instruments from around the world, patrons will have the chance to touch their way through the exhibit, learning about the instrument’s design and engineering, as well as the impact

Even some of the eclectic guitars will be on display, like an “air guitar,” the Rock Band/Guitar Hero controller, and the world’s biggest guitar. But don’t expect to see anyone’s personal guitar. “The focus is on the evolution of the guitar,” commented Morin, so that means that patrons won’t be able to see any one performer’s personal guitar—for this exhibit, the science is more important than the names.

Toledo’s newest hip-hop station

by Dorian Slaybod At 11am on September 16, 2014, the song “H-A-M” by Kanye West and Jay-Z played over the air on 94.9 FM, and The Beat, Toledo’s newest hip-hop station, came to life. Since then, The Beat has played thousands of hours of hip-hop and R&B tracks, morning talk shows, and latenight dance mixes.

Toledo is unwavering in its support for hip-hop. It has been a place for up-and-coming Detroit artists to perform, from stars like Big Sean to independent rappers like Black Milk. Toledo has even loved Eminem through the ups and downs of his long career.

Our city has always been ready for more hip-hop and R&B, and now The Beat is banking on that fact.

Toledo’s hip-hop and R&B

The Beat is owned and operated by iHeartMedia, formerly called Clear Channel Communications. They are a massive corporation with over 850 radio stations throughout the country, including over 70 with a focus on hip-hop and R&B. The Beat is a new model that they are trying out in a few markets like Miami, FL. It features rising rap stars playing seamlessly alongside established R&B artists like Usher, and well-picked recent classics from Drake and Notorious B.I.G. “We knew the format would resonate well with [Toledo’s] listeners,” said Kellie Holeman-Szenderski, who oversees marketing for iHeartMedia throughout Ohio.

The Beat’s operations manager, Nathan Reed, moved to Toledo five years ago from Flint, MI. Reed’s view of The Beat—whose slogan is “Toledo’s Real Hip-Hop and R&B”—is a more contemporary source for music. “Hiphop isn’t like it used to be . . . it’s part of everyday culture,”

Reed said. Reed believes hip-hop fans have patience when listening to artists for the first time, which gives the station a chance to earn the trust of listeners who want to hear new music. “Urban audiences will spend a little more time with you,” he said.

The voice

The Beat currently has just one full-time DJ, Chris Proctor, a native Toledoan who attended Start High School and the University of Toledo. On the air, he often shortens his name to “Chris Proc” or just “Proc.” He speaks with youthful authority, like a confident high school sports captain. But he’s also a little goofy. His sentences end with a nasal hinge, like he’s holding back a spot-on Kermit the Frog impression. During intermissions, he talks about everything from Kim Kardashian’s dress choices to upcoming charity events happening in Toledo.

He’s constantly talking to fans on Twitter, Facebook and his daily blog, letting them know what he really thinks about the songs he plays. Even during scripted commercials, Chris Proc sounds like Chris Proc.

Proctor is a devoted hip-hop fan. He told me that he won’t die happily unless he sees the Wu-Tang Clan perform live. He dissects songs and albums, and gets to know them as well as old friends. When I told him that

I was not a huge fan of Kanye’s last album, Yeezus, he instantly responded, “Try listening without the lyrics and to just the beats.”

Proctor is excited about the new music he plays on 94.9 The Beat. “Hip-hop’s entering another golden age,” said Proctor, “It’s becoming more fun.”

In the studio

I sat with Proctor in the studio while he recorded a set for Saturday morning. The Beat’s studio is newly but minimally remodeled, with just a couple speakers, a TV, a station ID poster, a microphone, and a few computer monitors with recording equipment.

“Check—check,” said Proctor, as he took the air. He introduced himself, and then faded into Nikki Minaj’s “Only”—a song where she discards NBA players as nonchalantly as chicken “cutlets.” Proctor loves the song and Minaj’s lyrical confidence. He then let a few more tracks play without interruption. Proctor explained, “It’s more about music than it is about me.”

Red Cross Oscar Night

Disaster can strike anyone at any moment, and The Red Cross keeps us prepared and responds when it does happen. One of the best fundraisers of the year, Red Cross Oscar Night raised money for the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio.

Raven's asymmetrical mane and cute, vintage-inspired style makes her stand out among the crowd. She loves playing with themes when it comes to her clothes, and prefers to keep it feminine by donning skirts with edgier pieces. She's new to the city, but so far is impressed with the style she's seen in the 419.

You're new in town. What do you make of Toledo style?

After coming from a place that was full of cookie-cutter hipsters, it's fascinating to see industrial style and more of a rocker edge.

What are the main go-to items in your closet?

Long and flowing skirts, or black pencil skirts, short and detailed.

Do you have any style icons? Who are they?

The annual casual affair benefits the Jack and Jill Club programs in our community. Northwest Ohio.

What's the craziest thing you've ever worn?

Not really . . . I like to play with themes and characters. Last year, I went from hippie to witchy to warrior.

A child's donkey costume; I had lost a bet.

I rocked it with gold chains and a pair of knee-high black boots.
