Iconic music, yummy food and great eye candy

Born in 1947, Arlo Guthrie followed his father, the iconic Woody Guthrie’s footsteps, and became a renowned folk singer with the release of his song Alice’s Restaurant in 1967. His whimsical and humorous lyrics became a theme that kindled a generations’ social consciousness and activism, and the song continues to resonate and with each subsequent generation.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the guitarist’s 1965 turkey-day meal, WGTE TV station will broadcast Guthrie’s live stage performance of Alice’s Restaurant on Thanksgiving evening at 8pm.

The tradition started long ago on Thanksgiving Day. My brothers and I would help our mother, Alice, prepare thanksgiving dinner and we would burst out in the chorus of “You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant.� The iconic 18 minute musical ditty is a, delightful monologue about true occurrences

which take Guthrie from the local garbage dump, to Thanksgiving dinner, to his subsequent arrest for littering, and eventually to his physiological evaluation for the Vietnam draft.

Along with WGTE TV’s Thanksgiving evening broadcast, two local radio stations also play “the Thanksgiving song.� Eastern Michigan University’s 89.1 FM plays it several times between 8am and Noon along with other fun Blues-style food songs and Toledo’s 94.5 FM plays it around Noon and 4pm. UT receives national recognition for support to military students The University of Toledo has earned recognition from Military Times and G.I. Jobs as a top school for supporting student veterans.

600 colleges took part in this year’s detailed survey, and this is the ďŹ rst year UT earned the designation ranking in the top 100 of four-year schools across the country.

Ottawa Hills passes a controversial hunting proposal Not Cupid’s bow and arrow

A controversial measure to authorize controlled bow hunting to cull the Ottawa Hills deer population passed by voters on November 3. The head of the task force which spearheaded the initiative, Corey Hupp, says there is still much work to be done.

Hupp, an Ottawa Hills Village Councilman, said that the policy will be carefully implemented.

"We're going to err on the side of caution," Hupp said, continuing, "we want this to work, and our first priority is safety. So, we're not going to rush into something.�

Analyzing the problem

Hupp has been hands-on in tackling the issue over the last year, after consistent complaints about the number of deer and their impact on the Village.

The dangers extend beyond mere nuisance or property damage. Too many deer creates a food shortage and the potential for animals to be emaciated, leading to disease risks for humans, as well. "[We decided] we should really look at what it is that the deer, or other wildlife, are doing to our ecosystem. We enlisted experts to tell us what it is we can [and can’t] do about it."

A committee spent three months formulating a long list of options— trapping, relocation, sterilization— were considered. Some solutions were rejected for being too expensive, impractical or legally prohibited.

Public input

Many Ottawa Hills residents of whom expressed misgivings with any plan that involved destroying the animals. Whether bow hunting should be implemented was left to the voters. A previous authorization in 2009 to cull the deer population— approved by the village council without a public vote— was reversed by a referendum in 2010.

At the time, there was resistance to the idea of the animals being destroyed by sharpshooters. Other communities face the same dilemma— officials in Ann Arbor, a city which also faces an overpopulation of deer, voted on November 3 to use professional hunters to cull their deer.

"It just left a bad feeling. People didn't want high powered rifles in the meadow or around their homes, period," Hupp said. "So this time we said, 'Let's control this. Let's control not only the deer but let's control the hunters.'"

Now that the hunting policy vote has passed, Mayor Kevin Gilmore has assigned the implementations to the Committee for Services and Environment in Ottawa Hills, who will coordinate with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to develop the plan.

The Task Force assigned to investigate the problem of deer overpopulation in Ottawa Hills spent three months analyzing multiple courses of action.

Among the solutions discussed: „„ The possibility of trapping and moving the deer to a new location had to be rejected as it is not allowed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. „„ Another proposal would have seen every doe in the area tranquilized and inoculated with birth control. The problem here was practicality and budget -- every doe would have to be tagged, and the process repeated regularly after that for booster shots. „„ The proposed birth control was also prohibited by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources -- in case one of the inoculated deer would leave the area and be killed by a hunter, the deer’s meat might be contaminated by the process. For the same reason, sterilization of the bucks was not feasible. „„ An effort was made to get information to Ottawa Hills residents on the best way to discourage the area’s deer from continuing to reside there -- putting up proper fences, maintaining plants the deer don’t like to eat. But deer can prove persistent in an environment where there is less food.

Oh, deer! How many is too many?

According to a U.S. Forest Service study, the optimal deer density is anywhere between 15 to 28 per square mile. More than that and they become hazardous to themselves and their environment.

The Ottawa Hills task force looked at how other communities attempted to resolve the problem, including the Village of Granville, Ohio, where a bow-hunting program has been successful in reducing the population.

Granville passed similar legislation in 2007 to allow bow (and limited firearm) hunting of deer for four months each year. The program has been successful, removing over 700 deer from the area in seven years.

A representative from Granville attended a meeting of Ottawa Hills' task force, where she outlined their program.

It's a wrap.

After a seemingly interminable election season, it's finally in the books. Election 2015 is finished, and in a convincing fashion no one anticipated. Hoo boy, are we thankful for that. But what does it all mean?

Here's our crack analysis, Thanksgiving style.

Pass the turkey

First, the turkey. Or in this case, turkeys. The so-called "protest" voters. You know the ones. They clamor for a "none of the above" choice on the ballot. No candidate is ever good enough. They'd find a reason not to vote for Gandhi.

Or they think it's all just a colossal joke.

They vote for Mickey Mouse for President.

There are hundreds of them out there in T-town. We know because they voted for something about as viable as a cartoon figure to run the City.

Seriously, who are these chuckleheads who wasted their time going to the polls to vote for a mentally challenged prophetess? We assume they didn't really believe that she would be elected. Or that she had any clue about how to run a half-billion dollar corporation. So why throw away your civic responsibility on an irresponsible vote?

Was the rest of the field not good enough? The choices ranged from a lefty idealist to a pragmatic former chief executive, from a razzle-dazzle cheerleader to a competent administrator. And if that wasn't enough, you had a non-politician with vast political experience. Make a choice, huh?

Take our advice, if these choices still didn't pass muster, don't vote for a cartoon.

Just don't vote at all.

Now for the gravy

The average Toledo voter finally saw fit to go to the polls in a local election.

Most of the electorate was inspired to cast a meaningful ballot. The turnout was unprecedented. What might account for the thousands of voters who usually skip municipal elections finally taking part in the local democratic process?

On to pie for dessert, or more fittingly, the brownies. Pot drove the turnout in September, pot drove it again in November. Whether pro or con, everyone seems to want to weigh in on the wacky terbacky.

Leftovers

Which brings us to the turkey leftovers.

The failure of Issue 3 hurt in more ways than one. That's because too many voters tied it to Issue 2. The lead balloon of a pot monopoly dragged down the future ability to get anything on the ballot as a citizens' initiative. Now the ballot board has the power to split anything into multiple ballot questions, all of which would have to pass to make any change. This turkey will continue to plague the electorate for years to come.

Speaking of leftover turkey, Carty's campaign laid a royal egg. Widely thought to be a real contender for a fourth term as mayor, he instead finished a distant third. The electorate decided to stay the course with Paula HH, no matter how she ascended to the 22nd Floor. Carty, on the other hand, couldn't "get the job done."

The gravy in all this is Carty should learn that his time has past. No more annual rumors that he will rise, to run for this, that, or the other. Give it a rest Carleton.

One last turkey that might be gravy in disguise. Sandy Spang's amateurish inability to work on a team has led to her being disastrously ineffective on Toledo City Council. She wanted to get in and shake up the budget. She couldn't. And it was the budget's fault, not hers, or so she says.

How could she improve? Why, move into a position where she could act unilaterally, of course! Except the electorate saw through her and said, no thanks, Sandy, back to council, where she likely will continue to pout and blame others for her shortcomings. Rumors have her running for County Commissioner next year.

Screw up, move up? Not likely. We have advice for dear Sandyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; grow big enough for the position you hold before running for something else, or get tossed like another year of unwanted fruit cake.

The story: It was 5 or 6 years ago when I drove down Adams St., looked at the very space my store is in now, and said to my friend,”I want to have a shop there!” I loved the area and saw its potential.

In July 2014 I was at Manhattan’s, with the same friend and we met the gentleman who owned the building. We talked about my need for a space to liquidate my inventory at an affordable price with a good location. He said “Well, this is your lucky day!” We walked across the street and came to an agreement. When an opportunity comes along, I jump on it!

I opened Vintage Vibes in October 2014, just in time for the Annual Zombie Crawl.

The shop was teaming with zombie costumes, but offering the zombies a beer or a glass of wine seemed to put me on their good side. Who knew zombies like to shop?

Having a resale shop has always been a dream of mine, on “the hunt” since I was young, with a passion for estate and rummage sales. I was reunited with an old friend, Sara Cox and the idea blossomed! Growing up in the area, we are excited to join the shops on Glendale Avenue. The Cat’s Pajamas will add a little spice to the sweet little corner that is now our home.

The distinction: With a number of “thrift” stores in the area, we need to set our store apart from the rest, striving to be more of a vintage or thrift “boutique” — to provide our clients with a high-end shopping experience, without the buyer’s remorse. We are excited to be a partner with Sara Cox Photography studio, giving us more to offer our local community than your average “thrift” store.

The items: I take the time to hand select each item, inspect and clean them thoroughly to ensure our clients get all the pleasure of instantly enjoying their new “find”. Since we are vintage AND thrift, shoppers will find anything from housewares to clothing for all ages, bags and shoes in a plethora of styles and variety of decades from the 50’s to present day, with a few toys and games for the little ones! We feature local jewelry designers, with future plans to showcase other local artists.

The story: Founded in 2012, Thrifty Trendz is a mother-daughter owned vintage and thrift shop. Bonded by their love of thrifting, the shop expanded when daughter, Jules, opened up her own line of boutique vintage— Thrifty Trendz by Juls, housed within the Thrifty Trendz location.

My store is unique as “Toledo’s Hidden Gem” for fabulous finds! True to our motto “Come find your gem @thriftytrendz”, the store was founded on the LOVE for the “thrill of the hunt”.

With 3,000+ sq ft of indoor curated vintage and thrifty treasures (as well as an online marketplace), you‘ll find a gem, or two... or three. If you don’t find it, we will find it for you!

The items: We specialize in vintage furniture and home decor, along with a large assortment of vintage clothing, accessories, knickknacks, collectibles, jewelry, luggage and electronics, We love to follow vintage trends (while creating some of our own). We hunt for all things old, weathered, worn, unique, chic, retro, modern, fun and absolutely fabulous!

The eras: Currently we are obsessed with anything Mid-Century Modern/Danish Modern/Atomic aka ‘Mad Men Style’ - We just can’t get enough of the 1950s-1970s era of bold, streamlined, minimalist design.

The future: We are excited to have recently expanded our Thrifty Trendz brand by introducing our new line, “Thrifty Trendz by Juls”.

I am inspired by Mid Century Modern(with a hint of Art Deco), with the vibrant color palettes and rich wooden accents. Blending geometric and organic contour in the architecture, furniture, and fashion design really draws me to the era. I just know what I like!

Mid-century fashions were classy yet, sexy with patterns that complimented a woman’s figure but, left a perfect amount to the imagination! Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O are two people of that era who have always inspired me.

I have always had a real passion for the elegance of the 1940â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, fashion-wise, but as a child of the late 80â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and 90â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, I have recently found myself drawn to that era. I also love the romantic drapingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of Madame Gres, the abstract stylingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of Elsa Schiaperilli, the structural designs of Cristobal Balenciaga, Christian Diorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s New Look, self-taught British designer Mary Quant who changed fashion with the mini skirt, Yves St. Laurent particularly the way he integrated Pop-Art into fashion, Vivienne Westwoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s punk approach, and I could go on and on...

Dow has loved vintage her whole life, and her collections show. Her eclectic mix, of wedding gowns, comic books, furniture, and more, illustrates how Dow loves bringing the past into the future.

The story: I started buying vintage jewelry at around 8 to repurpose it and then resell it. I moved on to comic books, vintage clothes, and furniture; it all added into the mix of my collecting habits over the years.

The eras: My favorite era of vintage is probably the 1930s, when everyone still looked so elegant all the time — the long beaded gowns with evening gloves and heavy eye make up always appeal to me, it’s such a classic look. My favorite designers are Ray and Charles Eames, Hans and Florence Knoll, and George Nelson.

The inspiration: I have always had a great love of industrial and furniture design, and my art has always drawn me to repurpose found materials. I always liked building things and I just decided to start making furniture.

The future: My goal is to open my own vintage bridal boutique for brides to come find the perfect vintage gowns and accessories for their weddings. For now, I am selling vintage out of my studio at Handmade Toledo.

Nedleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ice Cream has been in business in Perrysburg for just over eight years, humbly beginning selling Hersheyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ice Cream. The shop has expanded, scoop by scoop, upgrading to Toftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ice Cream and other frozen desserts, including soft serve and creative ice cream cakes. A baristaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s list of coffee favorites also populate the menu.

Working on a sundae

Most recently, owner and manager Ellen Wisniewski, decided it was time to expand again, with pastries and baked goodies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were thinking too small. We wanted something exciting that would get us through the slower winter months,â&#x20AC;?

Ellen said. A sweet, serendipitous moment came in October, when Nedleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paired with Mary Anne Zukowski, pastry chef and graduate from Orlando, Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Notter School of Pastry Arts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was divine intervention,â&#x20AC;? said Ellen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were looking for a pastry chef and she was looking for work. We told her she could make whatever she wants!â&#x20AC;?

Zukowski has worked as a pastry chef in fine restaurants, including Emeril Lagasseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tchoup Chop Restaurant at Universal Orlandoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Royal Pacific Hotel, as well as working as a cake decorator and sugar artist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was trying to find a job as a pastry chef in Toledo, but there werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t many opportunities. When I came to Nedleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s I saw it as a chance to show people new desserts they may not have [tried before].â&#x20AC;&#x153;

And now, something completely different

Zukowskiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dessert case boasts strudels, tarts, macarons (light and crispy baked meringue cookies, not to be confused with the popular coconut cake macaROONS), and ganache covered â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nosh Cakesâ&#x20AC;?. Nedleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also plans to feature savoury optionsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; when Ellen Wisniewskiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s talks about Zukowskiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s caramelized onion, feta, pear and gorgonzola cheese tart, her eyes go dreamy.

I asked Zukowski if the two sides of the cafe will ever join forcesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; whether or not she could see the future of pastries and ice cream coming together. She answered by opening the freezer door to show me a colorful display of ice cream cupcakes.

I tried the Buckeye Bullseye cupcake: a rich chocolate ganache and peanut butter frosting covering chocolate cake with a thick layer of ice cream. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to make ice cream cream puffs next,â&#x20AC;? Zukowski said, beaming.

After working at Rose & Thistle in Perrysburg and attending the Culinary Institute of America in NYC, Bedford native, Andrew Johns, has returned home to open his restaurant, Sage Steak & Seafood, in the former home of The Corral, where he worked his first job, as a dishwasher. Local filmmakers discuss developing projects

by Jon Ruggiero In the March 11, 2015 issue of The City Paper, we took a look at local film makers in a story— Lights, Camera, Local. As the year progressed, so did the projects of the artists profiled.

So where are these movies now?

Kim Sanchez Kim and her organization, Reel Ohio, have worked to help foster local filmmakers. The Toledo Indie Filmmaker’s MeetUp, an event in March, was “to provide a networking opportunity for local filmmakers”, Sanchez noted. Reel Ohio curated over 75 regional film submissions for screening during Artomatic in April.

Reel Ohio will also help promote the CommUNITY Film Festival next February, hosting a Filmmaking 101 workshop at the festival, looking to find local films that “inspire audiences, promote inclusion and celebrate the everyday lives of people with disabilities”. with his “passion project”. “[I] had to put it on hold once (Pi Day Die Day) came up, along with some other setbacks, but I’m determined to get that film finished,” said Cullen. Pi Day Die Day has a few more weeks of production and a planned premier at the Maumee Indoor Theatre in March. Cullen been collaborating: “I also recently finished doing cinematography and co-producing Chad Zuver’s next film New Blood Awakening,” said Cullen.

Chad Zuver New Blood Awakening, the ambitious sequel discussed in the March article is almost done. “We started filming in June and wrapped up in August. Emilio Areas Emilio has had a rollercoaster of a year, film-wise. First, his film Silencio, was mired in electrical problems: “The setting of the film takes place in Chicago.

We were supposed to film for 2 days... there was a winter advisory because of the cold & snow and I had complete equipment failure... the cold disabled the electronics. I actually had to go back in May to re-shoot those scenes which, I’m happy to say, came out amazing.” It also turns out The City Paper helped him get a project off the ground. “Shortly after the article came out, my friend approached me about making a documentary about Nicaragua - the country that he, as well as my parents, are from. So we spent about 6 months filming and editing this full-length documentary, A Better Tomorrow.” To see Emilio’s work, visit his personal YouTube page.

Steve J.P. Rodojev “Shaft: The Akron Chronicles”, which Steve discussed in the March article, might be available for people to see soon.

According to Steve, “I just launched a new YouTube channel ‘Rodojev Films’ which contains trailers of most of the films I’ve made. I’ve actually thought about releasing all three ‘Shaft’ films onto the channel to be viewed publicly so keep an eye out for these movies to be released in the near future.” Steve is working on a film that will bring attention to an important problem in Toledo. “The Wandering” is a fictional account of a girl’s harrowing experience with human trafficking. “I was inspired to write this film based on the times I heard about people going missing in Toledo and learning that Toledo is ranked as one of the top cities in the US for human trafficking— in our own backyard, that is very alarming to me.”

The horrific reasons behind a hate crime and its community impact will be explored in the University of Toledoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production of â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Laramie Project,â&#x20AC;? beginning November 20 at the UT Center for Performing Arts.

The play is a piece of â&#x20AC;&#x153;investigative theaterâ&#x20AC;? by Moises Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theater Project.

The drama is based on the true story of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard, a gay college student whose 1998 murder in Laramie, Colorado drew national attention.

Returning Home The events in Laramie had particular significance for Cross and his husband and co-director, Mark Leasor. The pair had just started dating in 1998, around the time of the crime, and they both followed the coverage of the investigation closely. After years of living in Los Angeles, Cross and Leasorâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; both alums of the University of Toledoâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; moved back to the Glass City in 2015 and are excited by the opportunity to bring â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Laramie Projectâ&#x20AC;? to the UT stage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We met with the ensemble, most of whom had been selected prior to our involvement, and began rehearsals right away,â&#x20AC;? Cross said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is one of the most strongly connected ensembles weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked with.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had never heard of this show prior to being cast in it,â&#x20AC;? said Christina Pin-

ciotti. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The first read through was difficult for me because I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what to expect. When I realized how brutal the crime was, I began to feel sick.â&#x20AC;?

Coming Together Although it can be a challenge for directors to join a production after actors have already been chosen, Cross said that working with this cast has been an enjoyable experience. Cross also noted that the showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rehearsal process has built a strong sense of trust and collaboration among the cast. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re asking our actors and ourselves to take failure out of the equation, so that we all feel free to make choices, take chances, and build the piece together in a way that is uniquely ours,â&#x20AC;? Cross said.

In the end, Cross said he hoped seeing â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Laramie Projectâ&#x20AC;? would inspire viewers to think outside of themselves on the issues discussed. It is easy to become desensitized to tragedy and the experiences of others, Cross noted, but it is important to remember what happened to Matthew Shepard -- and how it affected the people who knew and loved him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We hope audience members see themselves up on the stage and that that connection and empathy encourages them to be an active part of a larger dialogue,â&#x20AC;? Cross said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is through listening to the stories of others, and through telling our own, that we really begin to understand and value each other as human beings.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Laramie Projectâ&#x20AC;? will run November 20-22 and December 4-6 at the UT Center of Performing Arts on the University of Toledo campus.

Delightful Art with Dee, her beautiful art gallery, is supported by a regional community of artists, musicians, comedians, as well as a swarm of adoring supporters, who all attend her non-profit galleryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s multiple, monthly events. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a jumper,â&#x20AC;? said Brown, proudly beaming while sitting in a lounge chair in her Davis Building gallery. Surrounded by art, it is clear her individually-run gallery is a space of both labor and love. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To hang my shows, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m touching over 500 pieces of art a monthâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; twice,â&#x20AC;? she said, laughing.

Opening up Meeting Brown on a sunny and warm November day, I groggily sipped on an afternoon coffee while she projected high-energy. Brownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s excitable demeanor ranges from uttering left-field nonsequiturs to quickly recalling exact dates or specific facts. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like a butterfly â&#x20AC;&#x201D;

hard to catch, but that flutter is part of her charm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like being stuffy. I think people place too much importance on labels and formalities. A lot to celebrate On December 13, Delightful Art will celebrate a one year anniversary and there are many reasons to celebrate.

Brown selected her gallery space after exhibiting her work in the Davis Building Gallery. The gallery features monthly artist shows and offers monthly events that include a large party for every 3rd

Inclusivity and openness is a recurring theme at Delightful Art with Dee. Brown believes in an informal, free-form, group-led rhythmâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; the same that helped her get where she is now. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I studied sculpture at UT with Tom Lingeman as my main instructor. He taught me to get out there and grab [my] goals,â&#x20AC;? Brown said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what you want to doâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; go for it. Innovation’s Vacation Local music scene loses a major player

Still mourning the loss of venues, like, Mickey Finn’s, Bar EDM, Mainstreet, Omni, Woodchucks Bar & Grill, Murphy’s Place and The Black Cherry, a community of talented musicians, the scene is having a hard time staying afloat.

Further instability is evident as Innovation Concerts, the booking agency for Frankie’s and other local venues, announced that they will be taking a long break after their Saturday, November 28 concert at Frankie’s, featuring The Casket Company, Silver Age, Stretch, Unsinkable Molly Brown, Blackeye, Missing In Cincinnati and Affairs.

“We’re just constantly losing money on every show,” said Broc Curry, president and founder of Innovation Concerts.

“I have to take money from my other businesses to keep things going and that’s pretty much how it is has been since the beginning. Right now, we just need a break to take time to look at things… and we’re trying to help find someone to help keep Frankie’s going.”

A tough call Since 2012, Innovation Concerts has nurtured Toledo’s music scene by booking shows for both local and touring bands. While Innovation started up with the help of an investor, they were on their own after six months. A small group of 6-8 people worked hard, used their own money, and dedicated their lives to promoting music in Toledo.

Innovation Concerts has booked concerts at the now closed Bar EDM, the Blind Pig, Frankie’s Underground, Headliners, Howard’s Club H, Iggy’s, Mainstreet, and The Cla-Zel.

“Everyone works 70+ hours a week.

We’re at the point where I am crossing my fingers at every show. My thoughts range from, ‘how many people do I need to break even’ to ‘how big will the loss be?’” said Curry.

The decision to put Innovation’s activity on hiatus was considered in the past, but Curry had a difficult time pulling the trigger because of his support and belief in local talent.

“A few weeks back, we had a show that didn’t do very well. At midnight, I realized it was my birthday, and it hit me that on my last birthday, I was in the same situation and I told myself that if things didn’t change in a year we’d have to close up. Of course, I’d made that kind of promise to myself a few times, but we kept going. But that night, I paced around my house until 6am and couldn’t get it out of my head. For three months straight, any time we opened the doors we lost money. So, the next day I talked to my staff and told them what I was thinking. Everyone agreed that we had to face the reality - there just aren’t enough people supporting what we are trying to do,” said Curry.

A problem nationwide The issue, dwindling local support for live music acts, is exacerbated by Live Nation and Ticketmaster. Live Nation, the entertainment company, which currently enjoys a virtually unregulated monopoly on live music, with exclusive rights to venues, artists, dictating performance venues during a tour. Ticketmaster, which controls the majority of retail ticket sales online, essentially pushes independent promoters out of the industry.

“Live Nation really owns the business,” said Curry. “I started booking shows when I was 14, and when I was a kid, I could get huge bands for $500. But now, we’re dealing with $5K. Even if tickets are $15 and 100 people show up, it’s still pretty obvious what we lose on a consistent basis.”

A local solution While Innovation’s hiatus is deemed temporary — an unspecified break for the team to reconnect and recalibrate - their announcement of a much-needed break is a symptom of a growing problem. A scene isn’t just made up of musicians, but audiences, too.

“There are a lot of bands in Toledo.

Our band list alone has 200+ talented musicians, but it requires people to come out and support them,” said Curry. “We’re definitely not saying there is no support, we have a committed group of people who just love it, but even double the audience wouldn’t be enough. We were only drawing a third of the people we need to break even. The thing that kept us going was people coming from Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Ann Arbor… at least half the crowd is from out of town. We just weren’t seeing enough local people coming out to shows on a regular basis.”

Innovation’s hiatus should serve as a hard learned lesson for Toledo’s music fans: If we want your scene to prosper, we need to participate in it. Go to shows, or talented and creative local musicians will be playing covers and competing with TVs at bars.

Or worse— move on to venues in other towns.

Advocating Opportunity

Toledo non-profit takes on human trafficking

by Dorian Slaybod I sat in Megan Mattimoeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office, waiting for her to finish an interview with a documentary filmmaker. Her office window was open, overlooking Adams Street in Uptown. Her back wall, covered with orange, pink, and blue Post-It notes, included three oversized notes that said â&#x20AC;&#x153;Resources,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Get Involved,â&#x20AC;? and on the far right: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Issue.â&#x20AC;?

For years, Mattimoeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s issue has been human trafficking. There are people in our community who use others for labor without giving them fair pay or an option to leave. And there are people in our community who have been trafficked, who were used and controlled by others. If they are lucky enough to find an exit, many of these people are left without sufficient support.

Mattimoeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s organization, Advocating Opportunity, works to help these victims.

They help remove people from trafficking situations. They work to expunge criminal records for people who were forced to commit crimes that they never wanted to commit, like prostitution. Through litigation, advocacy, and social work, they give human trafficking survivors a chance to start a new life.

Recognizing the problem

Mattimoe wanted to be a human rights lawyer since high school. She went to the University of Toledo for her undergraduate and law degrees, and found a job as a public defender in Lucas Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Juvenile Court. Clients came to her, accused of breaking curfew, or running away. In some of these cases, Mattimoe felt like something more was going on.

Then came a case where a client revealed to her that she was being forced to have sex with strangers. Bound by attorney-client privilege, Mattimoe could only encourage her client to contact the authoritiesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;which she eventually did.

The FBI arrested the traffickers, and Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Services took her client to a safe home.

The Juvenile Court began assigning Mattimoe to cases where trafficking appeared to be involved. Soon, Mattimoe was spending most of her time on trafficking cases. Last year, with just $20,000 in funding, she started a non-profit,

Advocating Opportunity, and worked with over 70 human trafficking victims. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our model is a gap filler,â&#x20AC;? said Mattimoe. Her organization provides support for human trafficking victims that other social service angencies cannot provide. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want them to become completely self-sustaining, on their own terms,â&#x20AC;? said Mattimoe. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m thriving today,â&#x20AC;? said Michelle Moore, one of AOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s board members and a human trafficking survivor. She is working on getting her record expunged. Not only does AO help survivors get out of harmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way, but they also offer survivors â&#x20AC;&#x153;the next step at professionalizing,â&#x20AC;? says Moore, through expungement and their new Health & Wellness program. A criminal record, â&#x20AC;&#x153;always is a shadow hanging overhead,â&#x20AC;? says Moore. Expungement provides survivors with a clean slate to find a career and move on with their lives.

A golden opportunity

The Ohio Attorney Generalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office recently awarded AO a Victims of Crime Fund grant of four hundred thousand dollarsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a program-altering sum of money that will, for at least the near future, give AO stable footing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a force of nature,â&#x20AC;? said Catherine Hoolahan, a parttime staff attorney with AO, referring to Mattimoe. Hoolahan had planned to retire before Mattimoe got her involved with AO. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been doing this for seven or eight years with very little help. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad to help her get it off the ground,â&#x20AC;? said Hoolahan.

AO is finally receiving the support it needs. They will soon have a second, full-time attorney, working in Columbus, and a full-time advocate that will guide victims through the rehabilitation process. Last fall, the Ohio State Bar Foundation awarded AO the Outstanding Organization award, and in March, the American Institute of Public Service awarded Mattimoe the Jefferson Award.

The president of AOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s board of directors, Jeni Belt, spoke at AOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first fundraiser on November 5. Belt thanked everyone for coming to support the organization. She also thanked Mattimoe for all her work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got involved in this because I believe in this woman,â&#x20AC;? said Belt. Everyone in the audience applauded, excited to see whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next for AO, because, they too, believe in Mattimoe.

Rebecca Paden Age: 33 Occupation: Homemaker/current leader of Super Fitness’ Extreme Weight Loss Challenge As the previous winner and new leader of this year’s Super Fitness Extreme Weight Loss Challenge, Rebecca Paden is accustomed to wearing workout gear.

However, when she’s not motivating the Challengers, she opts for a Paris-inspired style that softly highlights her new body.

How would you describe your style?

Romantic. I like to think of Marie Antoinette in the future. I love her sense of style and what she’d probably wear now.

Did your weight loss play a big part?

Definitely try the things you were afraid to when you were overweight. For me it was exposing my legs, so shorts and skirts were a huge ‘no’ for me. Even after I lost the weight I was afraid to go for it. But once I tried it, I decided to embrace my legs!

What style/shopping tips would you give to someone who’s also lost weight?

Go for what makes you feel beautiful! Be daring in your newfound adventure of finding your new style. You’ll be amazed at what might look awesome on you.

What is a recent purchase or find that you really enjoy?

When I was in Paris, I found these really cool lilac, lace shorts at a vintage store. I got a really cute top to match.

Do you make a lot of vintage or thrift store purchases locally?

Not typically. I like to shop online a lot at Modcloth. They have a lot of vintage flair stuff.

Your current outfit: where did you get it?

[The sweater] I got from Zulily and the top is from Kohl’s. [The shoes] are from Irregular Choice.

What are 3 must-haves in your wardrobe?

A pair of skinny jeans that make you feel good, a pea coat or blazer, and a good pair of shoes, like a cute pair of flats.

If you could have one style superpower, what would it be?

To be able to blink my eye and automatically be dressed.
