A Long Story
Storyteller Tedd Long Publishes a New Book
Bringing Toledo’s past to life—one story, tour and menu at a time.
By Brian Trauring
If you call Tedd Long a historian, he will gently correct you. “I’m not a historian. I know real historians… that actually went to school and got their PhD. I’m a storyteller.”
For more than twenty years, Long has shared Toledo and Northwest Ohio history through his website, group tours, books and GPStriggered audio tours. “I love the backstory. It’s the backstories that have personalities that I really enjoy.”
Long is now completing his latest book which features Toledo restaurants, including nostalgic photos and menus from past establishments. His professional consulting office is decorated with historical photographs, and the acclaimed storyteller smiles as he reflects on how it all began. “When I was at Bowling Green (BGSU), in my undergraduate studies, I took every history class I could.” As part of a Leadership Toledo class, he took part in a regional tour led by Ted Ligibel. “Ted announced it was his last year (leading the tour) and I took up the challenge.” He calls his historical storytelling a “hobby,” but those who know him understand it’s much more.
These excerpts are from an interview with Long for MLiving:
MLiving: Why is it important that people in and around Toledo know about this area's history?
Ted Long: “I came here 35 years ago from the Chicago area. I grew up in Mansfield, but my wife and I lived in Chicago for about five years. When we arrived here, we thought, ‘this is just ideal’, we just fell in love with the area right away. And yet, every time we talked to someone who was local, they seemed to hold a negative opinion of the area and complain that there's nothing to do. And we would laugh and say, ‘we were just at the symphony last night, had a nice dinner’, and yet people would say there's nothing to do. I think the more you know about the history, the more you appreciate the city you live in.”
Toledo during prohibition, seems to be a specialty area that you like to focus on.
“Yeah, and people love their gangster stories. When you tell locals about Toledo's wide-open days, they're kind of proud. They’re reaction is often, ‘wow, we were a wideopen town. That's pretty cool!’”
did not take place because the State of Ohio did not provide financial support for the project.
What's ahead for you? What projects are you working on? What's in the works?
“This one I’m pretty stoked about. I started working with a guy that I've always known, Mark Schneider, who is a Toledo collector. He collects everything. Toledo related. And I knew that he had a big collection of restaurant menus and napkins and swizzle sticks, anything to do with restaurants from Toledo. So, I am finishing up a
new book, and… Lost Restaurants of Toledo, Lost Eateries. I've got the old pictures, I've got old advertisements, but what's really cool is I also have the menus. I tell the story of the Boody House restaurant, and then, boom, here's an 1800s menu from the Boody House.

Looking good and feeling good is an inside job
The way we care for our inside health (body, mind, and spirit) shapes, designs and reflects on our outside both in how we look and how we feeling about the world.
I often ask folks to reflect on how we feel and perceive the world and life and how it drives what we eat: bad day usually brings about bad eating and a good day brings about good eating. That’s just one example that many can relate to. But, also, what dictates if a day is bad or good? Sometimes the bad things are actually just lessons and guides as to what to do or not. How we perceive such things is driven by our internal health and, in return, we carry our posture, facial expressions and much more accordingly.
When we can shift our gut health to balanced, our mental health to optimistic, and our deep connection to all clear, our looks and feelings are significantly adjusted and we send out vibrations and frequencies that attract all that serves our highest self and wellbeing. Struggling with Shoulder or Hip Pain?
Don’t Ignore the Signs.
Joint pain is common as we age, but it doesn’t have to limit your life. At Wood County Hospital, orthopedic specialists like Dr. Osama Elattar and Dr. Carlos Gomez offer expert care to help seniors stay active and independent.
For shoulders, early signs of trouble include pain when reaching overhead, difficulty sleeping on your side, or weakness when lifting objects. These may point to rotator cuff tears, arthritis, or bursitis—conditions that often respond well to physical therapy, medication, or minimally invasive procedures.
If you’re experiencing hip pain when walking, getting in and out of the car, or climbing stairs, it may be more than wear and tear. Anterior hip replacement is a modern option that speeds recovery and minimizes pain.
Don’t wait until the damage is harder to fix. If joint pain is affecting your daily life, talk to a specialist—there are more treatment options than ever before.

Hormone Replacement Therapy A Powerful Tool for Aging Vibrantly
Restore strength, clarity, and vitality at any age.
By Bob Baker
Hormone Replacement Therapy, (HRT) refers the administration of dosages of testosterone in men and estrogen in women. Men and women are both born with organs that produce hormones, men have testes while women have ovaries. Men and women reach peak hormone levels during ages best suited for child bearing age. Men gradually lose a percentage of their testosterone each year as they age. Women lose nearly all of their testosterone and estrogen production during menopause, often creating a traumatic period in life. Accompanying this diminished hormone production, neither men nor women, as they age, are able to naturally build and maintain a sufficient amount of bone and muscle mass to stay vibrant and strong. Without HRT the body deteriorates as we age.
Doctors frequently rely on a “testosterone reference range” published by medical authorities, with a “reference range” from a low testosterone reading for men of 250 to a high of 1400.
Addressomg the underlying issue
If a doctor finds a low testosterone level, or in the case of post-menopausal women, a physician may refer to low hormone level readings as “normal for someone at an advanced age.” In these situations, a doctor may recommend taking an SSRI, (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) or antidepressant to allay concerns. But treatments such as SSRIs do not address the problem.
The feelings of emptiness and loss a person experiences, along with the
loss of strength and agility during the aging process, can be caused by the continuing decrease of hormones produced by the body. Medications to treat depression can help the patient forget or ignore the underlying problem while also abandoning pursuit of the true causes of unhappiness. The person is left in a blissful state of brain fog, yet not really dealing with the challenges of life. SSRIs are a quick and easy way of dealing with a problem that would otherwise take weeks of testing and years of ongoing treatment. Most doctors don’t have the time or background knowledge to properly treat hormone deficiencies, nor are they inclined to do so.
In our current more enlightened time hormone replacement therapy has become accepted as a treatment plan for dealing with aging. It is a lifestyle choice made by many men and women dealing with the effects of aging, keeping qualified doctors busy. Hormone replacement clinics can be found locally while others are able to deal remotely through “telemedicine”. It may be worth the time and effort to explore the possibilities of hormone replacement therapy, especially if growing old isn’t what you had hoped it would be.
Diagnosis And Treatment
The first phase of treatment is a comprehensive blood test which your doctor will review before setting up a treatment protocol designed specifically for your personal needs based on your blood test results. About a month after you begin your treatment another blood test will be administered along with a discussion with your doctor. While the doctor will be interested in the second blood test results, the doctor will also want to know how you feel. Between the results of your second blood test and your general feeling of well being the doctor may or may not need to adjust your treatment plan.
What To Expect
Individuals participating in hormone replacement therapy can expect, depending on the individual, to lose fat, gain muscle and regain strength, improve sleep quality, improve libido, build stronger bones, lose “brain fog”, improve your mood and experience a renewed outlook on life. The feeling of dreading bad days subsides because an adjustment of attitude takes place, turning back time, making you feel years younger.
I started my hormone replacement therapy pretty late in life, when I was 75 years old. In hindsight, because of the advantages the therapy afforded me, I believe I should have started ten years before. I’m a barbell weight training coach, training three times a week. As I became older, I was having a hard time recovering from my workouts. I tried all of the customary remedies, none of which worked.
I found that my testosterone level was falling off the low end of the chart. I agreed to a hormone therapy plan, which raised my testosterone level by more than a thousand points, and I have never looked back.
Replacement of substances lacking in the body
Hormone replacement therapy is the replacement of something that’s lacking in the body and needs to be replenished. The primary hormones, testosterone and estrogen, which you will receive are bio-identical to that produced by our bodies and work within the body just as those produced by the testes and ovaries. A sufficient amount of estrogen in the female body is as important as a sufficient amount of testosterone in the male body. They are the cornerstones of good health, vitality and longevity.
Once you begin your HRT program you will find that you have more energy and drive. A good use of that energy is to begin weight training to build lost bone and muscle mass ---The best exercises are the deadlift, squat, overhead press and bench press.
For those wishing to spend more time at the gym choose any of the following ancillary exercises; barbell row, chin-up/ pull-up, bicep curl, triceps extension or dips.
To build the muscle and stamina you’re looking for, a proper diet in addition to lifting weights is a must. Shoot for a daily intake of one gram of protein for every pound of your bodyweight and three times that amount of carbohydrates, daily. Divide these numbers by the number of meals per day. For men over 40 years old and women those numbers should be decreased by 25%.
For me, hormone replacement therapy is one of the best things I’ve done in my life. It has given me a renewed purpose in life and a deep curiosity and excitement for what tomorrow will bring.

Dining out
Borderline has personality Sylvania bistro delivers all-American dining experience
By Steve Meringue
One might expect a restaurant called Borderline Grill to be a Mexican cantina; "borderline" harkens to the Taco Bell ads from the early '90s. But Borderline Grill, at Mayberry Square, near Centennial Terrace, is an all-American bistro with a wonderfully eclectic menu, brought to Sylvania by chef and owner Kristopher Parker and his personal and professional partner, Nikki Falk. Cincinnati native Parker was formerly the head chef of Barr's Public House in Maumee.
American dream
“(Borderline Grill) was an opportunity to build something of our own,” said Parker. “We’re just trying to bring something nice to the community. We have a lot of standard American fare, but we leave it open-ended to do a variety of different things, ranging from poutine to gumbo. There’s always something new to try here.”
The deep red hue of the brick walls that line the interior of the restaurant sets a comforting tone on this hot summer night. Behind the bar, Chris Ryan deftly pours, shakes, and mixes a wide variety of cocktails and libations, including the delicious Tangerine Dream, which I order based on the name alone, since it made me think of the famed German electronic band that did the score for the classic Tom Cruise movie "Risky Business."
The drink consists of orange juice, triple sec, vanilla vodka, and Sprite and tastes like a melted Creamsicle-cool, tart, and refreshing. While I sipped on my drink, our server, a delightful woman named Nina, visited our high-top table with a bright and fresh attitude and a commanding knowledge of the entire menu. After perusing the eclectic offerings, we ordered the Sweet & Savory Fried Pickles, hand breaded chips, fried then served with a deli-
cious tangy house-made ranch dress ing. The pickles taste like bread and butter pickles -- they're sweeter than your typical dill chips that one usually finds around these parts, but they're most assuredly not sweet pickles. It's an unusual twist on a classic dish, which is Borderline's trademark.
Culinary art
Take the smash burger, which was ordered by one of my dinner companions. You can get a smash burger anywhere, but at Borderline, its a work of culinary art. Even Tony Geftos, the local newscaster and foodie about town, a regular reviewer on social media, gave the Borderline smash burger his seal of approval. It's perfectly grilled--not too pink, not too burnt--with delightfully crispy edges, served with thick cut bacon and gooey melted cheese on a soft brioche bun. Add a side salad and you have a perfect meal.
Of course, walleye filets are a Toledo area favorite, and Borderline's take on the local iconic dish stands out from most of their competition. My dinner companion chose to have the fish fried (grilled is also an option) and a large portion of walleye filet is served on a bed of mashed red potatoes. What makes the fish special is the creamy pepperoncini lemon butter sauce that comes with the dish. It's the perfect accent to the tender flaky pieces of walleye ( the serving was so large that a to-go box was deployed).
‘A bona fide masterpiece’
Then there was my dish, which I ordered from the list of specials-wild mushroom risotto with grilled
chicken. This meal was a bona fide masterpiece, with the risotto cooked into a creamy, mouth-melting blend of mushrooms and parmesan, with tender pieces of well-seasoned chicken placed atop.
Our dining party was pretty well sated by the time we came around to thinking about dessert but we had to conclude our excellent meal with a bang. All of Borderline's desserts come courtesy of Ukrainiansweets (yes, it's one word), a local company that specializes in delicious, delicate cheesecakes that are true works of art. We ordered the pistachio cheesecake, which was rich and sweet without being overpowering, baked in a graham cracker crust.
There's also a series of after dinner cocktails, such as the Mike Jones, made with chocolate syrup, vodka, Irish cream, coffee, and hazelnut liqueur. Being pleasantly full from the risotto and cheesecake, I opted against dancing with Mr. Jones this visit. But there will be other opportunities, because I intend to visit Borderline Grill again. Welcome to the neighborhood, Borderline.
