INTRODUCTION Adam Partridge Auctioneers’ summer auction of 2022 is devoted to the collection of the late Jack Blackburn. Jack had a passion for British and French studio ceramics and was well known as the founder of ‘Pots from France’.

For more than twenty-five years Jack, with his partner Margot Bartlett, curated biannual selling exhibitions of pots made by many of the leading French ceramists. The work was varied, with an emphasis on functional ware balanced by a choice of fine individual pieces, and displayed in the informal and unconventional setting of Jack’s house and garden. Jack lived at Bankside Cottage in Youlgreave, Derbyshire, which one newspaper critic dubbed ‘The English home of French pottery’.

Jack and Margot had both been collectors for many years but since becoming semi-retired from their jobs in theatre education, the couple decided to invest in ‘a few pots’, as Margot put it, ‘instead of a new frock or a CD player.’ Their forays to France at least twice a year clocked up thousands of miles (and wrote off several estate cars) returning each time fully laden with some 300 pots made by up to 20 potters. At the Bankside exhibitions, and other pottery fairs in the UK, the pots were sold at little more than the potters would charge themselves, sufficient to cover the purchase cost and their travelling expenses only.

As well as works by highly regarded French potters like Claude Champy, Jean-Francois Fouilhoux, Christine Fabre, Caroline Barbet, Pascal Geoffroy, Jean-Nicolas Gerard, Jerome Galvin, Camille Virot, Jean-Pierre Viot and Jack’s personal favourite Brigitte Penicaud, Jack’s collection also features several hundred pots by British, European, Japanese and Korean ceramists like Takeshi Yasuda, John Maltby, Janet Leach, William Marshall, Colin Pearson, Ewen Henderson, Patrick Sargent, Philip Eglin, Richard Batterham, Geoffrey Fuller, Robin Welch, Claudi Casanovas, Ken Matsuzaki, Nobuo Okawa, Shiro Tsujimura and Ree Soo-Jong.

The auction concludes with a selection of Jack’s books, pictures, furniture (including Japanese Tansu and Edward Teasdale chests) and a collection of Bhutanese textiles.

Jason Wood, the auction’s curator, writes: Jack first approached me about selling his collection through auction some years ago. He was battling various cancers but still determined to get to France whenever the opportunity arose. We talked about how useful it would be for me if he could find the time to start an inventory of his collection, especially the French pots.

But it was always going to be at ‘un moment futur indéterminé’.

He wrote: ‘I’ll consider my archive logging when I am back on the chemotherapy. In the meantime the plan is to get to Provence – I meet the haematology team at the weekend and will leave immediately. It’s a, what the hell! Live while you can situation.’

When he began collecting in August 1985, Jack did start an inventory of sorts. Among the many files and boxes of archives was a little black book listing every pot bought or gifted in the ten years to 1995, along with snippets of information and asides, some of which are reproduced in this catalogue. In his first six years of collecting Jack recorded 85 pots by 31 different potters (18 through personal contact) and an average monthly expenditure of £30. In the next four years the collection grew by 129 pots by 53 potters (of which 28 were new) while the average monthly expenditure increased to over £150. So the total, by August 1995, stood at 214 pots by 59 potters. The works were mostly British with some French, Japanese and American.

Over the course of the last couple of years of his life, Jack had started to compile a photographic inventory of what was now a collection of over 600 pots. But sadly his illness meant he couldn’t complete it. I found a note which read: ‘STOPPED photographing when life became too hectic. September 2021. Adieu!’ He died in November.

Preparing for this auction, therefore, has involved a considerable amount of research in order to identify as many of Jack’s pots as possible. This has not been easy and there will inevitably be things that have been missed – hence the section of the sale we’re calling ‘Pot Luck’. The first task was to separate the collection proper from his stock of ‘Pots from France’. Then it was a case of trawling through Jack’s archives to help pin down the attributions and provenance of hundreds of mainly French ceramics. (The British and Asian pots were more straightforward, though there were a few new names among these too.) There was also the task of tracing the wherabouts of several pieces that had made it to Jack’s inventory but could no longer be found. Some losses were recorded: a Geoff Fuller bowl, ‘Broken when I knocked it off a table’; a John Maltby cup bought in 1992: ‘Gone walkabout? Who knows why and when?’ In the garden there were frost-damaged pieces: a Charles Bound chawan cracked in two and the remnants of a large shallow Jean-Pierre Chollet bowl smashed when Jack lost his balance and stepped back on it. In the kitchen, the cupboards and shelves were full of chipped teabowls and teapots with cracked lids, all bearing witness to constant usage. At the Blackburn home there was always a good excuse for another cup of tea. So as well as the catalogue descriptions, much time has been spent on condition reports.

Remembering Jack Jack’s daughters, Cathy and Susie, write about the many ways their Dad enriched their and others people’s lives: Dad was born in Leeds during the war to Sid and Amy Blackburn.

His father was a prisoner of war so Jack didn’t meet him properly until the war had finished. Dad has a younger brother, Dennis, who was born after Sid’s return, and the four of them lived in a fairly remote spot on Otley Chevin near Leeds. Dad always spoke fondly of this time.

As a child, Dad was studious and read a lot. He was very proud to get a place at grammar school and went on to train as a teacher, which is where he met his future wife, our mother, June.

Dad got a place at Cambridge University to study English.

Again, he was incredibly proud of this achievement, as he was the first person in his family to go to university. Dad always said that he wanted other people from a similar background to him to get the same opportunities as him. With that in mind, he has generously left his house in France to Fitzwilliam College – the college that he went to – to provide scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Dad also leaves a legacy through all the people that he introduced to the two passions of his life – drama and pots. He was so enthusiastic about both these areas when he spoke about them, that he inspired others to share that passion. His legacy is all the potters that he supported and the beautiful pots that sit in so many people’s homes. It is also the many people that he introduced to theatre and performance. He was always able to get the best out of people – even if his methods were sometimes unconventional.

He has a lasting legacy in the books that he wrote.

He always wrote. We found countless notebooks and scrappy bits of paper in every corner of the house, with his many musings and snippets of poetry written on them.

In his latter years he was determined to finally publish his books and working on them certainly kept him going.

There are two yet to be published so watch this space!

Dad loved drama, film, art, poetry, beautifully crafted items.

Even when he gardened, it wasn’t just gardening – he was inspired by feng shui and the ancient art of Japanese gardening. Typical Dad! Countless books would be bought on any new creative interest and he would study them in detail.

But the thing we will remember the most about our Dad is his positive attitude to life.

When Margot, his much loved partner of many years, was diagnosed with cancer, his determination to make every day a positive and inspiring one was a delight to see.

Every week he would take a different piece of art or an object to her hospital room to enrich her day, give her something new to look at and take her mind off her illness.

Throughout the many years of his own illness, Dad showed the same fortitude and never let it stop him from doing anything. He still travelled to France – a country that he saw as a second home – driving many hundreds of miles to his house in Provence. We would cross our fingers and pray that he would make it back without the need for hospitalisation or a car accident – he was a terrible driver.

Dad had years of regular trips to various hospitals for treatment for his cancers, but remained upbeat and positive. He saw every medical trip as a new, interesting experience that, in some strange way as he described it, enriched his life. He constantly praised the NHS and the care that they gave him. He never complained and he made every extra day that their treatment gave him count.

We will remember Dad as someone whose positive attitude to life and the adversity that it can sometimes throw your way, should be a blueprint for our own lives. We remember him as someone who has taught us and others to value creativity and to take pleasure in the small things in life.

Finally we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have encouraged and supported Dad in his various endeavours, and through the many years of his illness.

In traditional Japanese aesthetics, “wabi-sabi is a strong reaction against

the dominant sensibilities of both the past and our modernist times. It is an ancient concept that looks for idiosyncratic solutions, recognising that all things are impermanent, all things are imperfect. Wabi-sabi encourages one to stop preoccupation with success in terms of wealth, status, power and luxury. It suggests, rather, that we should enjoy the unencumbered life – get rid of everything that is unnecessary. Me? – Me? Help!

I have thousands of books, hundreds of pots, a smart phone, an Apple i-pad, a Philips razor, a Newhome cooker, a Dyson vacuum cleaner, a Bosch central heating unit and a certain amount of modular Ikea furniture. All branded goods and state of the art. I also have crumbling plaster, faded paintwork, an ageing bathtub, a cracked window pane and damp-rotted window frames and dusty surfaces. I wear torn shirts, usually two sometimes three at a time, and I cut my own hair. Wabi-sabi is comfortable with contradiction and ambiguity. And so am I.

On the fourth trip in 1991 Margot accompanied me and she was prepared to boldly go where I had failed before.

I was in no way expecting the knockout blow which the sansai glazed functional ware of this Japanese potter gave me...

Pots From France

paid for trips to France by selling “We Pots from France ” hand-made pots had become “Buying important to me, it fitted my life-style,

and fascinated my curiosity about individual creativity. Perhaps we could sell them. At Margot’s suggestion we began a series of exhibitions of French ceramics at Bankside. They proved successful. Pots! – exhibited in the house, the garden, the pavilion, the terrace – living, lived-in contexts, to which visitors responded with the most positive enthusiasm. We began to make money and established a business partnership.

However, it was the contacts, both potters and purchasers, who truly enriched our lives. The learning – what makes a good pot – a pot that is exceptional. The learning – the sheer size and variety of France which I had felt I knew already.

The learning – of a whole new vocabulary appropriate to the techniques and aesthetic of ceramics. The learning – the courage of those people who devote their lives to hand-making pots, their instinct for a personal, individual, investment in their work, that goes beyond mere technical skill.

Jack Blackburn: Not far from the Cote d’Azur, Pierre, together with his wife Claude, runs a picturesque workshop full of convivial friendship and a congenial working atmosphere shared with the two or three students who always become part of the family. His home plays open house to friends and visiting potters from the entire world. Pierre works in stoneware. But the really special thing about his work is the painting. And his chosen motifs are unusual: Pierre paints flowers because, as he says, he loves flowers. Jack Blackburn: Born in Japan, Yoshimi moved to France in 1986 where she has established a studio in Paris. The aesthetic she works in remains profoundly Japanese. The clay, rich in its mineral content, remains the basis of her practice which produces pieces of rugged material presence. In recent years Yoshimi has shown pieces at the ceramic market in Paris, which are the product of a different sensibility, including beautifully delicate, small teabowls, vases and platters.

Jack Blackburn: At the age of sixteen, Jerome left school to train in the art of traditional faience. Meticulous perfection is not his game. Likewise his decoration is searching, often a bit scary, sexually explicit and political, yet settled, within a context of patterns, design motifs and sequences that honour the tradition of faience.

Jack Blackburn: My favourite French potter. Brigitte left school at sixteen to work in a small production pottery where she mastered the skills of perfect throwing, turning and firing to order. However, by her mid-twenties, she wanted never again to produce another perfect pot. Renowned today for the natural free flowing spontaneity of her throwing, and the instinctive approach to decoration which distinguishes her practice, she now produces an exciting unique body of work.

Jack Blackburn: I am installing the international ceramic exhibition of Le Printemps de Potiers at Bandol a matter of a few weeks after the horrendous Fukushima nuclear disaster. There is a rumour of a guest visitor – a traditional potter from that devastated region. The man’s home, studio and livelihood are all destroyed. The elderly, renowned potter and his young assistant arrive with a selection of work and we contrive a space in the entrance hall which makes an adequate display area. The work is not essentially my taste, but it is undeniably masterly. I red spot a small teapot and appropriately tiny teabowl.

I cannot recall the potter’s name.

DROPPING THE POT For Jack Blackburn ‘See’, he says, ‘the way the heat has swept up the pot, the dusting of ash low down, the discrete application of salt, the trick of not letting the glaze run all the way down, this salmon pink that comes only from the firing.’ He finds the French potter’s words: ‘Raku yields so as to gain tension.’

Thumb in a Virot bowl, he lifts it casually, like an old friend, swirls his other hand around it, saying, ‘see the glaze is like a woman’s diaphanous dress, whereas the black raku is masculine, built up, layer upon layer on white clay.’

‘But what’, I ask, ‘if you drop one?’

‘In June’, he says, ‘I dropped the coffee pot of a potter who’d died in February.

I was rushing and it broke to smithereens.

It was expensive, but they are for using.

I grieved for that pot, but at least dropping the pot meant something.’

Jack Blackburn: I am drawn to the combination of a simple handmade aesthetic allied to the ecological principles of the maker’s practice. The outstanding design feature of this particular box, which so enhances its strong, simply stated presence, is its wave form: that of a stretched, elongated S. It is a hefty piece to carry down Bankside and then on arrival we find the box is too long to manipulate up and around the narrow staircase. The only solution is to remove the study window. This done I call up the heavy gang and we haul the box up to the second storey with ropes, manhandle it through the window space, and then up the six stairs into the top room, but only after having to remove the banister.

Jack Blackburn: I contacted Edward Teasdale to discuss the possibility of commissioning a second wave chest of the same length, but half the size of the first one, a size and scale about which Ed expressed some doubts. He was more persuaded when I explained my intention to use this box for the storage of some of the more special examples of my collection of chawan, the bowls used in the Japanese tea ceremony, which traditionally must be quiet, unassuming, have a natural grace, be lacking in any sophisticated artifice. My Tansu provided me with “ innumerable storage options. Because Japanese traditionally lived at floor level everything is designed to be used and aesthetically right from a low fixed perspective. Tansu have neither legs nor stands or any form of extraneous support; they live foursquare on the ground in harmony with the wood frame structure of the traditional Japanese house. The back, sides and top are left unadorned, all the aesthetic effect depends on the design, ironware of the front, the quality and finish of the wood.

Larger pieces have carrying handles, a legal requirement in case of fire or earthquake.

I negotiated hard and managed a reduction of 75% on the book price. Jack Blackburn: The red kera was specially woven for one the King’s sisters, a princess, by one of the most renowned weavers in Bhutan, the wife of the Dzongda (chief administrator) of Lhuntse, the remote eastern region where the most accomplished weaving is created. The Dzongda himself was a cousin of the King. I suggested I would like to buy the red kera. But that would not be possible. Later, when I took out my Swiss Army knife to cut ... I don’t remember what, the wife was wide-eyed curious. She wanted the knife. And I wanted the kera. She spoke to her husband. He nodded and said I could take the kera, but must give her the knife plus 100 ngultrums. She passed it to me, making sure that I understood the princess would be very disappointed, and realised that it would take a long time to weave another of that quality.

the 1980s Bhutan was a “ Inlargely closed country. I was there

as a guest, with freedom to travel more or less anywhere, for no other reason than that my wife June was there as one of a group of nine teachers from England located in primary schools throughout the country to develop a more useful and nationally appropriate programme of child education. An incredibly proud, never conquered, people, determined to preserve their independence and particular Buddhist based culture, it was an astonishing privilege for me to be in the country. There was so much to learn and experience from their everyday lives, their beliefs and customs, their art and architecture, all set against the high Himalayas. On my second visit I had grown accustomed to and informed about the importance and quality of Bhutanese weaving. I began to buy examples of their craft.
